Mystery Queen producers explain ending, hopes for Season 2

(This whole post is a bit of a spoiler alert, so for those of you who haven’t caught the ending episode, proceed at your own risk.)

I’m sure that all of you who watched the Mystery Queen finale this past Thursday were with me as I started to panic counting down the minutes and the show STILL hadn’t resolved the main mystery connecting our two leads, Choi Kang-hee and Kwon Sang-woo. And then they go ahead and bring back Kwon Sang-woo’s not-so-dead girlfriend with 3 minutes to spare. When it ended, I stared at my screen, thinking, That’s it? That’s your ending? It felt like an American mid-season finale, except there wasn’t going to be another half season to, you know, solve the mystery.

Thankfully, the producers behind Mystery Queen released a statement the day after the finale aired, explaining that they had planned this ending with a second season in mind. That’s a step up from my conjectures, which ranged from thinking the director/writer had run out of episodes to tell their story or that they were giving a big middle finger to its viewers and the station. At this point, though, the key takeaway is that the producers want a second season, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll get it.

Mystery Queen pulled in decent ratings for KBS, but they weren’t in “smash hit” territory: The ratings ranged from 8-11% in its run, which isn’t terrible, but there was definitely a slight downward trend throughout the series. The producers said themselves that if Mystery Queen had pulled in better numbers, they could have given a firmer answer on whether the second season is a go, but as of now, they’re still in talks with KBS about it. If all the stars do align, we could see Mystery Queen 2 on the airwaves as early as next year.

I have to admit, I feel torn about this whole situation in general. I grew pretty attached to our ragtag Scooby gang, and it’s a format that could easily work as a multi-season show, with its semi-procedural elements and one overarching mystery. And there were promising developments revealed in the finale that I would be happy to see play out onscreen, like Choi Kang-hee gaining her autonomy (sort of) and studying for the police exam, the secret HQ paid for by Kwon Sang-woo’s watches, and the tiny, fleeting moments of the ajumma and gruff detective maybe developing romantic feelings for each other. The show was such a tease with that last one.

However, there’s also a part of me that kind of feels cheated by the producers, because I got invested in these storylines and characters over these 16 episodes, and I didn’t get the closure I was expecting in the finale. If they were planning for a second season, they really should have announced that beforehand, instead of blindsiding the viewers like this. It almost seems like the producers planned that unresolved ending to arm-wrestle a second season out of the station, which leaves me with a vaguely uncomfortable feeling.

At the end of the day, I’m glad that there’s a possibility we might get a whole second season’s worth of episodes to continue the adventures of the ajumma detective and the grumpy teddy bear that is Kwon Sang-woo. On my wishlist for the new season is Choi Kang-hee as a divorcee rookie detective getting into a love triangle with Kwon Sang-woo and puppy Lee Won-geun. Anyone else have any wishes for the new season? Let us begin a prayer circle to the drama gods!

Given the new season only remains a possibility as of now, I just hope this doesn’t end like Vampire Prosecutor, with that cliffhanger ending at the close of its second season, and no new season in sight even though it’s going on five years now. I need closure, people!

I thoroughly enjoyed this drama and its ending.....and though a second season would be nice, I don't consider it to be necessary. For me, Mystery Queen was more about character development/relationships than a textbook whodunit.

I would love to see a second season

Also, the original Sherlock stories have Moriarty as the elusive bad guy who never gets caught, so they're being true to the source material.

Good point! I was disappointed with the ending at first, but at least the ending has all our favorite characters alive, healthy, and doing well. Even if they didn't catch the ultimate bad guy (makes sense - demoted cop+housewife), they're still out there catching other bad guys. And one day, when Seol becomes a detective in her own right, they could possibly catch the big fish. Or not. But at least they'll be keeping their neighborhood safe.

I would love a second season, but I would also be at peace with not having a second season.

Man.... I don't know. The producers don't even have confirmation for a second season yet!!! (ノ `Д´)ノ ︵ ┻━┻

They should have made a good, clear finale wrapping up the first main story while leaving behind a hint of mystery. I needed some closure. I was ready to move on from HS's story.

I do love Seol Ok and Wan Seung though and how they were still working together. I would love to see Seol Ok as a divorcee rookie detective too, @tipsymocha!

The characterization was done pretty well in this show. Seol Ok and the rest of the Scooby gang were likable Wouldn't mind seeing more of Kyung Mi & Captain Bae too. ^^ The pacing/writing could be improved for sure. I guess I would be drawn to the second season if it does happen.

Ahhh I didn't know that Vampire Prosecutor left on a big cliffhanger. Eek. D:

I know right.... though i love alot of American shows, the reason i always come back to korean dramas is because they end, they give u closure within a month and a half or longer (depending). And i really liked Mystery Queen as i feel Kdramas have started evolving from simple genre of romcom ( i was MIA from kdramas for at least 3 years) to more entrailing genres to keep me hooked, but then u do this! Y producers Y??

If they'd explained this up front then maybe the numbers wouldn't have gone down as well? Bit of a vicious circle going on there I think. Some people might understandably have checked out thinking something was going odd with the writing and the central mystery must be being wrapped up in about 10 minutes flat.

Damn at least there is a 'news'. Thank god that they didn't go MIA on us, at least. Now there has been second season for shows like mrs. cop, though it has been only up to 13% rating wise, so mystery queen hasn't fared that bad compared to that. Just a little recommendation from my side, perhaps if there was a better progression or hint in the almost absent romance arc, which we only got to witness at ep 14-15, may be the rating would have increased. Like the first couple of episodes had double digits, which kept going downhill, but still a solid 8-9% of people have been steadily watching the show, so kbs can't say completely that it has been a miss. Considering there have been so many mediocre show with poor rating this year. Though I don't have any high hopes, since kbs can be quite cruel at times, like how they cut off the last two episodes of beautiful mind lol. Just keeping the prayer circle on so that season two happens for real. Just to think about the possibilities of a romance finally happening and more banter and bickering between ahjumma and won seung will make my day. Please don't disappoint like last time kbs! Also have to say, I absolutely love the writer more now that I know they always intended for a second season! I love the quirkiness in the characters, and how the writer don't forget the details in the story line which keeps the character true to their identity. Like on the finale, sul ok's friend kept telling her to stir the vegetable well , and mix them up, but then sul ok left the kitchen and then in the midst of her run, she remembers about the dish lol. These small details bring life to the drama, which gives the show an uniqueness, and we can see the difference from conventional mystery dramas. To add on, I won't mind inspector woo in the run for winning sul ok's heart too hahah. Though it would be interesting to see the smart and witty sul ok fall for the detective, whom she has loved to hate till now lol. Argh this makes me remember how many topics I wanted closure on. Regardless, #prayerforseason2!

The open-ended ending didn't bother me as much as that normally does (the unresolved ending of the Sarah Connor Chronicles still drives me crazy). It was better than a slapped-on contrived resolution (a little bit of that in Radiant office which also had a hurry-and-wrap-it-up feel at the end). Maybe because the characters and situation are set up so well that I can imagine what future seasons would be like (it could easily span multiple seasons. Fan fiction, anyone?).

The nature of their battle actually reminds me of Angel, where they spend five seasons fighting against an evil (supernaturally evil) law firm, and there's still not a resolution at the end, just the knowledge that they'll always continue to fight the good fight, even though the odds are always against them.

they can't give a firm answer because of the decent ratings means, that they're pretending to think of season 2 because of viewers complains about the ending they're covering up the ending failure with this.

Although I'm OKAY with the ending, I'm happy they're planning for second season (hope this happens). Unlike "Radiant Office" with a rush ending, this one is still acceptable though left me with so many questions in the end; like the motive SO's parents should be killed and how they killed; who is Hyun-soo actually (we didn't get much information of her other than Wan-seung first love and an theather actress) and why she's supposed to be killed; who is Mr. Kim and the relation with WS' dad, etc. I'm also curious if HS is really alive.

I think I might have been a bit disappointed if I hadn't gotten a heads up on the open ending. Since I knew going in, I kind of ended up being okay with the ending knowing the two were together investigating once again. Since this wasn't a romance really, I was also okay with knowing that ajumma was making it on her own and figuring it out.

Having said that, I just don't think they should have thrown in the alleged dead girl friend back into the mix...that was a bridge too far. I think this was a solid drama and am open to season 2 but certainly the producers know how rare this is so a flag on the play. I think the ratings going down was specifically due to change of competition or that's my recall anyway.

If it does come back though, I want the dead girl to stay dead (the detective said he buried her so unless she has a twin....) and for that to be resolved quickly and go on to solve other mysteries. No love triangle please please please.

Anyway, I guess I can't complain too much. Anyone remember a US tv show called The Glades. Apparently the reason for the way the last episode turned out was the production team trying to strong arm the tv station for another season. The tv station said no and the fans got totally screwed. I put that 100% on the production team for playing games and the fans deserved better.

I think his girlfriend stays dead. The ring gave him (and us) closure. And the OTP are he and ajumma. They're professional soulmates, if nothing else.

There are plenty of meta plot lines to carry over and weave in for continuity:
Who was behind the murders and why
The adultery and comeuppance
The many budding love lines
Does she pass her test
Etc.
They're like the warp for the weekly mystery woof.

I couldn't agree more with all the thoughts you shared especially about the return of the dead girlfriend.

I did not mind the last 2 episodes because I had been warned about the unresolved ending. I also did not expect the writers to finish up all the storylines in such a short amount of time. I would have been happier if the girlfriend had not shown up at the end though.

For any future seasons, I do not want a love triangle at all. I don't want the dead girlfriend or Officer Hong becoming part of the romance. I like the cheerful Lee Won Geun and it would be hard to watch him be the second lead.

All in all, I would be happy for a second season but I am ok with this ending as well. It was a good watch.

I want to see Wan-seung pursuing his Ajumma with all the love and doggedness we know he's capable of. Let's just hope this doesn't spark a trend. One of the things I like about kdramas is that you know going in you will get a full story told in a certain amount of episodes. So this open ending thing Mystery Queen pulled really blind sided me, and definitely not in a good way. Future seasons, that may or may not happen, would work without dragging this mystery over into them. There are always new cases to solve, so they should have given this one closure. While I did really like the show, the ending left a bad taste in my mouth.

I didn't like how the show seemed to get bogged down with a sudden reintroduction of the overarching mystery towards the end. But now it makes sense why they did it. But even if they weren't aiming for a season 2, I really liked leaving it open-ended at the last episode. It let me imagine the Scooby gang continuing happily on after the final credits rolled. As far as a season 2 is concerned...great! This show's format reminded me a lot of those great old TV classics Ironsides, Barnaby Jones and Murder She Wrote. They're much more lighthearted than modern procedurals. And due to their cross-generational appeal, easy to extend to multiple seasons. If I'd add anything to season 2, oddly enough it'd be an idol cast member.

Alright, I'm still mad, but it reassures me that there might be a second season.

Frankly speaking, I don't want a love triangle between Wan Seung, Seol Ok and Joon Oh. It was refreshing that there was no love triangle and the usual meddling and arguing.

It made the occasional flirting between Wan Seung and Seol Ok much more special. I'd love to know how their relationship will develop in a second season.

btw: I hope Seol Ok's sister-in-law will join the Scooby gang in the second season. That episode when they worked together is probably my favorite.

I actually really liked the open ending, as to me they did it in such a way that I could see how the characters would continue on, and it was a nice send-off. Except the apparently living Hyun-soo, but whatever. A second season would be best though! I want to see our ahjumma detective as a real detective. It's high time!

Agree with you on everything else. I love Officer Hong's dynamic with Seol-ok and Wan-seung as is, and I definitely wouldn't want things to change. Besides, if Ho-soon joins the team, which, I'm with you, I really hope she will, I think they'd be really cute together. But that's just me hehe. I was bummed when I realised she was only helping Seol-ok the once. I'd thought she'd have been invited onto the team for sure ?

lol.. well this is better..

I was actually thinking throughout the second phase of the show if scriptwriters are geniuses.. because every or most of these dramas run into predictable and not so mind blowing reveals when a corporation/govt/organization is behind all the "problems"

I thought they were smart to take the goods of this genre..create that overarching mystery... and then well not resolve it..and get the viewer to feel deflated with the sense of mystery not being much of a mystery.... the USP lies in the fact that even with this ending, as a viewer I am not grossly dissatisfied.. as i would have been had any other drama tried to pull that (create a mystery and then not solve it)...

They wouldn't need a second season if they had used their time wisely. I feel like they realized that they didn't have enough time to complete solving the main mystery and is using this to justify not being able to finish. Now it's oh we meant to do that so we can wrap up with a second season. But they would know better than us that it's a numbers game with broadcasters and another season isn't guaranteed. Especially with the numbers they pulled. I don't see it happening. If it does I'll be surprised as hell.

I don't know what to think, both of your reasonings make sense. But k-dramas are almost always about the ratings, that's why most stations usually try to add (sometimes totally unnecessary) episodes extension for the shows that unexpectedly gained high ratings, milking the cow for all its worth, you know. I kinda feel that the writer and producer of this show took a daring gamble by putting such an open ending story without so much of a guarantee from the broadcaster that they will definitely sign on for a second season, and basically we, the viewers, are the ones in the dupe if they ultimately decide not to air season 2 ('though I'm personally okay with the ending).

0

Required fields are marked *

Aha! So the producers did know that the viewing audience would have one or two, or three, lingering questions regarding the show! I'm glad to hear they quickly issued a statement of a possible second season.

I will gladly welcome a second season with this exact, same cast. But I'm also ok if it doesn't come to fruition. I don't feel upset or cheated with how things ended and I understand how they might want to leave things as they are. Enough info was provided to obviously, serve as a set-up for another season, but there were also enough details to stop the show where it did ---- we just have to finish the story on our own, in our own mind.

So if the second season happens, and I hope it does, may we once again see Seol-ok, Wan-seung and the rest of the gang back together, meeting in the lunchbox restaurant, ready to solve more mysteries! But if it doesn't, I'll be ok with that too.

I couldn't help feeling that they took us as hostage. I hate it but at the same time it rises my hope to see more SeolOk&WanSeung, I'm so torn.

I'm not cool wit this. Just... It was so not cool to end like that. There's an unspoken contract between the showmaker and viewer that, especially with mysteries, you DELIVER an ending. This is like reading a romance novel where instead of getting a Happily Ever After, the hero suffers a stroke and dies and the heroine gets blindsided by his secret debts and has to work to pay them off for the rest of her life.

IF they'd told us it would be multi-season. IF this was a western TV show. I would've expected it and therefore been kind of ok with it. However, IT IS NOT. So therefore NO. I've lost so much of my good will for this show that I don't even know if I'll watch the second season EVEN THO I loved the characters.

It's not the acting of the lead cast, I think it's the script that couldn't made me stay with it .....

I was burned by Three Musketeers-which I liked better, and which ended abruptly without a resolution. So I feel betrayed by Mystery Queen. For pete's sake, people--ratings are such a risk, just give the show and end and THEN if you've got killer numbers, you can make a second season.

Totally agree. Three Musketeers ending wasn't that bad though.

You're right BUT they promised us 3 seasons and didn't even complete the first. (Seriously, I loved that drama and was looking forward to more.)

I love the ending, it was warped up beautifully in terms of characterization. There would always be so many unsolved cases/mysteries to be solved, c'est la vie. Looking at the ending, it seemed that I looked into a microscopic life of all of us. People moved on, people healed, people faced new problems, and the world would still revolving. But, the characters evolved, for a better I hope, too. Seol Ok chose to live solo, pursued her long lost dream (I wonder if she ever took the test, then...), as well as Wan Seung stayed as bad ass with a huge heart detective. I am glad her mother in law still loved & cared for her, as well as her husband still tried to mend the broken relationship and pursued his career in better way I think (he moved to Jeju).

Kyung Mi has closer relationship with Gwang Tae, and I don't really care about the different age when both were adult and be responsible with their relationship. She found someone she could trust, rely on, respect her and didn't mind working with her literary, the same with him, he found someone he could share his life with, so?

I would love 2nd season, but NO love/romance, please, big NO-NO to love-triangle. Why working close together thus concern about the wellness of each other have to be end with romance or marriage? If that, why Holmes didn't just marry Watson? They were perfect in every single way, they completed each other, they needed each other.

And throw profiler Woo every now and then to this Scooby gang. He was the perfect catalyst to both Seol Ok and Wang Seung. He has the same brain wavelength with Seol Ok and as hard headed as Wang Seung, but he was reliable. And he needed Wang Seung to fire the gun.

I was smiling from the beginning to the end of the final episode.
It was, beautifully wrapped up, kudos.

I feel the same way overall. I assumed the husband was transferred to Jeju by Ha and Jung for not keeping a lid on Seol Ok's parents case (and so far he's gotten away lightly with being one of the corrupt pawns) but I agree he's feeling remorse for being a crappy husband (especially with her being shot as a wakeup call), and I figure the in-laws realize that too, hence their understanding. I think the seeds are planted for a slow-burn romance between Seol Ok and Wan Seung that could actually take a few seasons (like Bones), but I concur no love triangle is necessary. (actually, Elementary is a male-female Sherlock-Watson show with no romance). Great point about the last scene, I was also thinking it was a really nice slice of life shot.

I don't see any parallels here with sherlock and watson honestly. This is a completely different drama, and when we could say that here we also see a duo, but are they like sherlock and watson? Most definitely not. Sul Ok and Wan Seung are more like complementing each other, where as watson was always assisting sherlock. Unlike watson, wan seung is a direct accomplice to sul ok, heck he's a detective himself, and can't say that he's not doing his part right. We have seen since day 1, how much fixated he was on finding out the killer of hyun soo, and how dedicated he has been in all of the cases. While Sul Ok solves the cases based on the clues left by the suspects, wan seung has his own hunch, which tells him where to look for cues..and he mostly observes the convicts and makes decisions based on their body language and the vibes they tend to exhibit. They are two people from two opposite poles, yet have the same kind of quench for solving mysteries in mind. Like I loved how they were fascinated about how killers will dump the deadbodies in remote islands, and this couple were staring at them with raised eyebrows lol. So for me, it's more than sherlock and watson, no, rather they are a totally new pair, and a stand alone version, rather than a revamped sherlock-watson one, I would say. Also mystery queen is not just a mystery thriller, the genre is more like drama, with mystery in its core. So I don't mind the romance, since it tells us more about the characters and what moves them, individually.

I do see a little bit of a sherlock-watson parallel, where Seol OK is the brains and Wan Seung catches up to her deductions, but I agree it's not a close match and the show doesn't really need it. She actually reminds me of Adrian Monk somehow (wouldn't mind seeing a good American version of this show, not a lot of female sleuths over the age of 30 on American TV since Murder She Wrote)

I feel in a way the show has already settled any question of a romance. After her friends tsk tsk her on her newly single status, she goes down to her office to find Wan Seung waiting for her like she's coming home from work and she just plops down next to him like they're an old married couple (and then covers her ears and says "don't seduce me!" when he brings up his current case). It would just be fun to see another year (or more) of that.

Oh you had me there on your second passage! Heheh, I also love how the show leaves these subtle hints, but never been vocal on it. Also yeah, it goes well with the quirky of the show.
I agree with you that like sherlock and watson, sul ok is the brain and wan seung is more fixated on deduction, but yeah they revamped the whole equation. Also sherlock is so satirical and emotionless, should I dare say? While sul ok is empathetic, and always trying to care for people even if they don't [ cough sil and mil]. I would also take this opportunity to say that,I felt the mil's earnestness was a bit fake on the last episode? All these time she kept nitpicking on her cooking or laundry or like made her do all the menial jobs, when she promised in the first place that she will take care of her friend's kid. It's so visible how much she cares for her son, but not so much for sul? She's obviously more partial to her son, so it would be interesting to see too how the show develops this situation, once the extramarital is out in the daylight.
But coming back to the topic, yeah this is more like a modern take on sherlock but in a less day to day life, so may be it's more miss murple?
And yeah, can't wait to see more possibilities on season 2! KBS please be good and don't disappoint us.

Ah, nice Agathie Christie reference! Completely agree on all your points. And I've been meaning to mention it's nice to go 16 episodes with no wrist grabs (just a lot of playground shoving). And the twist on the usual exile-to-America and couple separation was good (and a relief-that stuff often ruins the final episode for me, so I'll take a good season-ender-but-not-series-ender any day)

The two last episodes left a bit of a sour note, but I still feel good about the drama overall.

For the 2nd season, I wish to see all of the Scooby Squad working together solving crimes. These moments are the drama's best, aside from the leads interactions.

No love triangle, please. But, yes, to more (reluctant) bromance between KSW and Lee Won-geun.

Although the case hasnt been solved yet I found the ending and episode 16 quite well sone. I was a mature, adult take.
Ok, Hyun Soo appears suddenly but I think she is the woman WS met in US to hire hire to bring down Kim and gang. I eel like this because WS mentions that sectrectary Pyo pulled out all of call logs to Hyun Soo when he was in the US. So he has to be speaking to some one right else how can there be call logs? Nevertheless this needed clarity and the baddies are still out there uncaught.
In a way WS and SO did get their closures, hmmm, moreover even if it was partial in that they knew that theor loved ones were pawns of a bigger scheme they moved on from their respective obsesssion of finding the culprits and the missing ones. I still didnt completely get how SO parents were murdered and was it Ha and Jung at the helm of that crime? YEs or no, SO has proven that they were murdered and she in that sense gets her closure.
HEnce that dialogue at the end, when she and WS concur that the crime and the messes are huge but those involved have to pay. Legally. And off they go to solve them.
What I loved:
The manner in which it was revealed SO has separated and is considering divorce and is on her own, in a small place, yet happy and free. Living for herself for the first time.
WS's loves her and his arc suddencly doesnt get all romancy , it stays true to who they are.
I only wish she takes that test and gets less cuious about cases till her exam is done. WS shouldnt exploit that weakness of hers. Shes new at this and feels such a high to work at her passion. Hope season 2 takes this into.
Jung Ji Won, man, is she badass. I want to know what she is upto and how she lands.

WS and SO have such good physical chemistry esp from WS i.e. the actor Kwon Sang Woo's side, itll be a shame if this isnt given full form as they get close. Kissed and making out welcome, in the same quirky different, diffident tone please.

Im not sure why the producers had to issue this statement, as though they have lost confidence or need to justify something. This show is unique and broke many tropes esp in terms of how female lead is portrayed. And how a male lead is as well. Ah well, rather than a second season, Id prefer 2 / 4 episodes more to get this story all done well.

Yay! Ajumma detective and her pretty boy cop return for a second season! Or at least, I hope so. The show was so fun, and I wouldn't mind seeing the crew tackle more mysteries, with further additions to the team of course, like Ho-soon and Inspector Woo. I want more female cops too! Although it's funny that until now we still don't know what happened to Dong-ki! Lol, did he become a secret baddie and so had to go in hiding? Everyone else has been reinstated after all ?

I was happy to leave most of the mystery unsolved, because then the ending could come with the knowledge that these people but never stop trying to solve it.
But seriously - I was happy when they confirmed Hyun-soo was dead and caught who killed her; and then Hyun-soo came back to life and the so-called-killer revealed he had absolutely nothing to do with her. What? A second season isn't likely, but I would love it (assuming the entire same cast stayed).
