Kim Yoo-jung offered leading role in School 2017

Yay, I couldn’t be happier about this news! Casting has finally commenced on School 2017, the seventh installment of KBS’s high school drama franchise, and an offer has been made to Kim Yoo-jung (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) to headline. It seems like a no-brainer that she’d be their first choice, given that she’s one of dramaland’s biggest youth stars, and her last series Moonlight Drawn By Clouds was a huge hit for the network.
School is a franchise of standalone seasons that tells stories set in high school and focuses on teen issues of the day like bullying and academic pressure. It began in 1999 and launched several early Hallyu stars’ careers (Jang Hyuk, Bae Doo-na, Gong Yoo, Lee Dong-wook, Im Soo-jung and more), and then was revived after a long hiatus in 2013 with Lee Jong-seok and Kim Woo-bin in the teen bromance to end all bromances. Who Are You–School 2015 starred Kim So-hyun in a season with a melodrama-mystery bent, which was more addictive but had less of the realism that the franchise built its name on.
The newest season will be helmed by PD Park Jin-seok of Naked Fireman and written by Im Soo-mi of the Let’s Eat franchise, long-running office comedy Rude Miss Young-ae, and old sitcoms like Three Men, Three Women and Nonstop 4. They haven’t revealed any story details yet, but the new season plans to stick to the original core of the series, to show real high school students’ lives and struggles. I’m especially happy about the addition of writer Im Soo-mi, because I would call both seasons of Let’s Eat relatable, funny, and poignant. School tends to be more dramatic than most of the dramas on her resume, but I feel like I can trust that she’ll give it heart.
This may be familiar ground for Kim Yoo-jung, who’s played her fair share of students both bullied (Angry Mom) and bullying (Thread of Lies/Elegant Lie), but I’d love to see her take a role like this where she’s front and center as the high school student and tackling some good ol’ teen angst. Hm, I wonder if any of her Moonlight co-stars are free. Kwak Dong-yeon is the right age for this, right?

Im torn between NO (I dont want another unnecessary comparison) and YES (Yoojung really wanted to act as a high schooler with her next drama).

yup..i feel u..immediately i saw the news ..i knew very soon there will be fan wars about who acted better in the school series. if kim yoo jung accepts..she will be compared with kim so hyun...to be honest...i wish these fan wars are unnecessary...and while i personally prefer kim soo hyun since i have watched more of her works and just like her more...i still think kim yoo jung is a great young actress...we can all love them together..no need for fan wars...haha..life is too short to spend it on causing unnecessary problems...

I agree with this. I think Sidus sucks in handling both girls and giving them similar projects (right down to the endorsements). one of my wishes for Yoo-jung is for her to leave that agency when her contract expires.
But for now, I'm happy to see her considering another project. I want to see her back on my screen, and she did say a few times that she wants to act in a high school drama when she's still the right age for it.

Not the same, but similar. Like Pocari Sweat vs. Chojung Water, Pelicana Chicken vs Yogiyo (one is a restaurant and the other a food delivery service, but both feature fried chickens in promos), etc.
And then, for dramas, Moonlight vs Ruler, Angry Mom vs School 2015, and now School 2015 vs. School 2017. But casting both girls in high school roles can't be helped since they're the right age.

Umm no. Sohyun herself said she gave up studying and school already to focus on her career right after she graduated middle school 3 years ago. So I doubt she have any exams to take. There is nothing wrong with that. She wanted to focus on her career and she wants to be on top like she said herself. Atleast she knows what she wants and focus on her goal.
Yoojung on the otherhand really go to school. Like she attend class, she studies with her classmate, she take exam like normal students. She even participate in school festivals, in school plays etc. There are even videos and photos with her and her classmate doing P.E. and listening to lectures in classroom etc. She go to school like normal high school student because that is what she wanted. She said she wanted to still have a normal school life. She said she doesn't wanna have regrets and live her teen years fully and like a normal student outside taping. And lucky for she said her schoolmate all treated her like like a normal student and not as a celebrity. That is why she take breaks and mostly only do 1 drama per year.
I think this was the difference between the two.

KSH didnt go to school but she is home schooled. So she will take national exam like normal, but the year end exam to evaluate her performance is up to the teacher/s

I am not a big fan of either of them, and between these two I prefer Kim So Hyun over Kim Yoo Jung. But this immature fanwar, *smh* i have seen a lot of comparison - who is prettier, who is better. They are too young to face this thing. What would happen in the next 10 years if this continue. I wish either one or both of them will be active in chungmuro more later. Kdramaland is too much drama by the fans, at times.

I hope they are! I don't think they constant comparisons make it easy for them to interact with each other. I like what SHK said about her own comparisons with her contemporaries. 'In the end it was all really pointless' or something to that effect.
I would love to see the 3 Kim's in a travel variety series. Something like Youth Over Flowers! I bet it would be an awesome watch and would kill some of the fan wars.

@Solo but Sohyun is not that close to Yoojung and Saeron. While Yoojung and Saeron is really close friends and are on same circle. They always meet up and interact in SNS. Won't it be too awkward is she is with both Yoojung and Saeron who are real life bestfriends?!

Competition will exist in any industry. And even if they don't take on the same role, people will still compare them.
I remember seeing an article where people mentioned Sidus was bias to Kim Yoojung just because Kim Sohyun is going to be making a CAMEO in Lee Jong-suk's upcoming drama.
Besides, the girls are still young. There are limited roles that they could take when it comes to dramaland. I wonder why they don't turn to films too, like Kim Saeron.

Let's stop with this line of thinking. I am very much aware that Sidus isn't promoting Yoo-jung properly, but it's not just So-hyun getting more SNS promotions. They promote literally every other artist they have more than Yoo-jung. It just so happens that So-hyun has a drama right now so she's getting more exposure.
So, speaking as a fellow Yoo-jung fan, let's leave So-hyun out of this and just agree that both of them need to get out of that agency stat.

Regardless of whether she accepts this or not, I wish everyone would stop bringing So-hyun's name into this because this is what draws the fan wars and comparisons. School series is undeniably career launching, and Yoo-jung may not need this, but the publicity itself is helping the show. They can have rookies as the rest of the casts, but it helps to have a big name to draw in audiences too. Tralalalalaal

I wanted her to leave so bad too. That angency don't promote her well at all. They are lucky Korean public love Yoojung so her drama always does well but they have to make effort and promote her too. Even at the height of MDBC fame they never promoted her that much. Seriously?! They suck at handling scandals too. So after her contract ends with them she should leave and sign to a better agency!!

I'm actually surprised at all the hand-wringing about the So-hyun comparisons. School 2017 will have its main cast, and at least one of them will be a girl. Why is it such a bad thing that it's Yoo-jung?
I get that fans of both actresses will always compare, but I haven't seen them go on a full-on fanwar. This negativity is only fueling the fire.
P.S. I've been reading Korean netizen responses to her potential casting and they're very positive. So there.

I don't get this so called fan wars and nor do I freaking care. I don't think the two girls care either. They are probably good friends but that's not dramatic enough for the internet trolls.
I can appreciate them both. I discovered Yoo-jung first through the many sageuks I've seen and have been following her career ever since. She totally won me over in the movie "The Chaser" acting beside some of Chungmuro's heavy weight actors.
I'm still trying to keep up with So-hyun's dramas since Moon-Sun.I just hope she is not going to be wasted in her current drama because she can do SO MUCH more if she is given more to work with.

If they cast all idols, drama is gonna be flop. They at least need one actor or actress who have strenght to carry a drama or draw attention to the drama from fans. So i am not disliking Yoo Jung to take it. I mean this drama only could further her career with young audience and more fans. It is not gonna hurt i hope.

I heard the production team did audition for casting . So, I was hoping for new face.
But probably the production team has other considerations. KYJ has more experience, still a high school student and can attract more viewers. Because School 2017 will face a tough competition with NGM Falsify and Yoona Kings Love.
If she accepts it, good luck cutie! And hopefully the plot is much better than School 2015... (still bitter...)

Maybe they will get new faces for other casts but need a big name like Kim Yoo Jung to be the main lead since the competition will be strong. Although I didn't watch TLAHL but I heard Lee Seo Won received many positive reviews, so maybe can include him among the main casts.

Fresh face female lead is a bit worrying for me - because it has the tendency to cast a real fresh face without acting chop for eg idol. Kim Yoo Jung's curent status probably too big for this series but they need her for more promotions and buzz and it is good to see her in this drama, probably this is her last high school drama.

Ah my first thought was NOOOOO... I would rather they take some low- profile actors or entirely new faces.. We need new blood! Plus, I thought the School series was famous for taking rookies and turning them into household names anyway...
I know School 2015 was a little different in that regard with KSH but look what they did to that show! Where was all the teenage angst expected from a School series?? I love romance like the next girl but they butchered it! Doesn't mean I didn't like it, but I didn't love it like I loved School 2013..
And yes on the comparison front... If KYJ takes this, then there would be just 1 more show where she would be compared with KSH.
But, well, whoever is cast, would still watch the show with high expectations!

I'm worried about these issues too. I'd like to know if 2017 will follow a male or female protagonist. 2015 followed Lee Jong Seok's perspective. 2016 was from KSH's perspective.

I'm less than thrilled with this casting since Kim So Hyun was in this role TWO YEARS earlier, which makes it feel like Kim Yoo Jung is second best. I never even considered Kim Yoo Jung to be a possibility as she's way too big for School. Kwak Dong Yeon, on the other hand, should be the lead, and hopefully, this can be his big break.

I feel like this drama only make her bigger than she is now. obviously Yoojung is too young for adult roles so her kiss scene with Bo Gum was awkward with fully closed lips. So i want her to enjoy youth dramas as much as she can.

When I first saw the headline I thought that KYJ is too big dor school franchise. If I do recall that school series usually a step for new/ rookie actors. But School 2015 has KSH which she already famous back then.
The other thing is I hate to see the Kim sister being compared to each other. KYJ saying yes to school is like fuelling the fan wars.
In another note, I agree that even that the drama is for rookie actors they need a big name for publicity. And yes I am torn between wanting her to say yes and wanting her to steer from the franchise. ??

Honestly, the way I see it, most of the people who are constantly comparing Kim Yoojung to Kim Sohyun are Kim Yoojung fans themselves. Don't even get me started on some of her fans who are out to attack KSH whenever she lands a new drama. Some beanies can attest to that.
Anyway, I hope she takes this. It would be nice to see how she fares with a drama that focuses on her. Also, I hope she takes a badass role. You know, for a change. And yes, Kwak Dongyeon for male lead please!

I thought the School series was a springboard to bring talented lesser known actors and actresses to the public eye. I read that it was a launching pad for the careers of Ha Ji Won, Jang Hyun and many other established actors today. I may be in the minority, but I was really hoping that the cast of School 2017 would strongly resemble the cast of Solomon Perjury (talented rookie cast) or School 2013 at the time. I've nothing against Kim Yoo Jung, she's a sweet, talented actress, but by all accounts, she's already established, and well known. I think that if she accepts, then this drama will have more elements in common with School 2015, Who Are You? which to my mind, was more of a high school romance drama than a drama dealing with high school issues. I don't know if I'm being clear, it's not that the drama didn't touch on high school issues, it's more like the romance aspect and shipping wars took it over.

From your list, the only realistic choice is Lee Seo Won. Even if Yeo Jin Goo didn't have Circle, he's too big for School, while Lee Hyun Woo is too old for School.

I like it! Hope she accepts -- I do get she is an established actress already but they can always get rookies or fresh-faced actors for the rest of the cast. It will make the drama more well-rounded if they have at least one experienced lead to anchor the show. I wish there's more female friendships (like WLFKBJ or AOY) this time around or maybe even exploring one's talents instead of romance.
I'd like to see Lee Seowon, Kim Min Jae, or Ji hoon (from Solomon's Perjury) to be a part of this drama!

Shin Ae was Yoojung's bestfriend so I am all for her being casted. What if they casted Yoojung's real life girlfriends?! Kim Yoo Jung, Seo Shin Ae, Kim Sae Ron, Lee Soo Hyun etc. and they can cast her real life male bestfriends too and just make this drama like a bestfriends drama.
She said she's close to Jisoo, Kwak Do Yeon and Yeo Jin Goo too so maybe they should all gather together and do their last high school drama before really moving forward to mature roles for good. She friends to Yoo Seung Ho too but he's not available.
I know they are all well known already but hey why not?! Atleast all of they are close friends in real life already. Their chemistry will be so natural.

The strength of School 2013 imho was not the charisma of the main actors or even the bromance to end all bromances... it was because every character was a leading character in their own story. School 2015 had a strong female character at the heart of the show but the romance angle didn't work for me (plus we all know how weak NJH's acting was there). Therefore, I'm happy that KYJ got this offer but I don't want her to dominate the story or be the one carrying the show. The rest of the cast will be vital, as well as the writing.
And seriously, do people compare KYJ and KSH like that? They have very different styles and give off different vibes. Overall I think KSH is more well-rounded as an actress, but I love the way KYJ makes the screen brighter with her presence.

Seriously, is there a rule in Korea where there can only be 1 top actress? In the 30s age group, there is Jun Jihyun, Song Hyekyo, Son Yejin, Kim Tae-hee, Gong Hyojin etc and you honestly can't say any one of them eclipses the other in popularity. This goes for the Kims and other upcoming child actresses. I'm getting kinda frustrated seeing fan wars each time any of them got cast for a drama.
Also, quantity is not equal to quality. I'm not saying Love in the Moonlight is a superior drama to Let's Fight Ghost, but it was more popular and KYJ won several awards and gave her a huge popularity boost. But fans act like she was being victimized while Sidus gives every opportunity to KSH.
And this may offend alot of people, but I wish people would stop saying how KYJ is too "big" for School and want the opportunity to go to a less popular actress. It sounds like people are scared she will become too popular.

Honestly though Yoojung wasn't being promoted well by Sidus. People aren't blaming KSH since she had nothing to do with this. People are blaming Sidus. Even at the height of MDBC fame they never push or promoted KYJ that much. We see Blossom really push PBG with all the guestings, interviews and article releases. Even FNC really media played for KDY and same for Jinyoung. But you rarely see Sidus do that for Yoojung when she is the freaking female lead of the most popular drama at that time and have her name in #2 actor brand power just behind PBG. She stayed there for a few months and even after MDBC ends she manage to be on Top 5 and Top 10 for a long time. They should have taken this opportunity and pushes for her more but they didn't. So you can't blame fans if they are mad at Sidus and wanted Yoojung out of that agency. They never promoted her well even before.
The thing with Yoojung is that she is popular now because her dramas did well (nothing to do with Sidus!!) not because she was media played. And because the Korean public really do love her because she have been well known as a child actor since she was 3 years old. She is a household name already and have been in numerous nation drama with like 40% ratings!!

YESSS. I feel like her role in Angry Mom was interesting, but had to lay low in favor of having the storyline focus on her mom (which is understandable). Like, I understood her motives and feelings, but I didn't really get to fully grasp her psyche. She was just so good in portraying an angsty teen with so much tensions and frustration that she tried to keep at bay. AND PLEASE YES TO KWAK DONG-YEON. He was so irresistible as the mysterious and stone-faced (but loyal and bromantic) Byung-Yeon, whose rare but adorable moments of joy and light-heartedness were so precious. Plus, he has great comedic timing. He can definitelly pull of the fun but heart-warming moments in School 2017. Also... I seem to recall Park Bo-Gum wishing to try out being a high school student in a drama (but I think this would be too much if I hope for all of the three musketeers).
