53rd Baeksang Arts Awards

It was a good day to be a goblin. The 53rd annual Baeksang Arts Awards were held on May 3, 2017, and the stars were out in full force to collect trophies for the best films and dramas of the past year. There are lots of awards ceremonies throughout the year for the film industry and station awards for dramas at the end of each year, but the Baeksangs award both film and television and consider any drama regardless of broadcaster, which makes the pool of entries more interesting and diverse.

The Daesang (Grand Prize) went to Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden in the film section and Kim Eun-sook’s The Lonely Shining Goblin in the TV section, making this writer Kim Eun-sook’s second Baeksang Daesang in a row after last year’s win with Descended From the Sun. Best Drama was then awarded to Dear My Friends (other nominees for best drama were W–Two Worlds, Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, and Moonlight Drawn By Clouds).

In film, veteran Song Kang-ho picked up a top acting award for his Occupation-era thriller Age of Shadows, and Sohn Ye-jin continued her trophy-sweeping tour across the land for The Last Princess. In TV, Goblin Gong Yoo took home the best actor award (other nominees were Han Seok-kyu for Romantic Doctor, Jo Jung-seok for Jealousy Incarnate, Namgoong Min for Chief Kim, and Park Bo-gum for Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, which sort of makes me wish they could’ve had a five-way tie).

But I was the most ecstatic for Seo Hyun-jin, who won the best actress award for her performance in Oh Hae-young Again, because she was just AMAZING in that role (other nominees in her category were Kim Haneul for On the Way to the Airport, Park Shin-hye for Doctors, Kim Go-eun for Goblin, and Park Bo-young for Strong Woman Do Bong-soon).

Gong Yoo (The Lonely Shining Goblin) in a tux never disappoints. It’s a law of the universe, and probably has something to do with that pesky immortal life he’s saddled with.

 
Seo Hyun-jin (Oh Hae-young Again) looks flawless on her big day. These types of necklines always make me nervous (I would just be hiking up my dress every five seconds), but she seems pretty confident that it’s perfectly fitted, so I’m good with it.

 
Kim Yoo-jung (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) wears my favorite look of the night. She’s glowing, her hair is perfect, her dress flutters like it’s made of something magical, and it looks comfortable to wear. Dying of envy.

 
Her Moonlight Drawn By Clouds co-star Park Bo-gum, in a classic tux. I could not get enough of the two of them sitting together and chatting, and just generally being adorable little puppies.

 
Sohn Ye-jin, here to pick up yet another trophy for The Last Princess. I don’t love the sleeves and the gauzy cape attached to the dress, but the overall shimmer-and-glow effect is pretty (but honestly I think that’s just her, not the dress).

 
Chungmuro mainstay Song Kang-ho with a win for The Age of Shadows.

 
Suzy (Uncontrollably Fond) was an MC for the event and arrived on the red carpet in a navy ballgown. It was a little simpler than I would’ve liked, but I think the more interesting part of her look is her freshly chopped short hair (for her new drama While You Were Sleeping) and bright red lipstick, which is a nice change of pace for the starlet.

 
Jo Jung-seok, who was nominated for his hilarious and moving performance in Jealousy Incarnate. I love the three-piece suit.

 
Yay, Park Bo-young! I miss your face! It’s only been a few weeks since Strong Woman Do Bong-soon ended, but I miss it already. She picked up a nomination for her super-powered performance, and wore the cutest little prim-and-proper dress on the red carpet. I don’t know that it would look good on anybody else, but she looks adorable in it.

Lee Yeon-hee (Hwajeong), who will be in the upcoming JTBC drama The Package. There were a LOT of embellished champagne-colored dresses on the red carpet, but Lee Yeon-hee’s looked the best (and the least bridal).

 
Park Shin-hye (Doctors) ventured outside of her comfort zone with a black floral gown, but there’s something off about the collar, or the poof in the sleeves, or the hair color… maybe there’s just too much going on, even though I’m happy she’s not wearing white or pink.

His The K2 co-star Yoon-ah picked up a popularity award in the film section for Confidential Assignment, and wears a beautiful splash of color. I have no idea why the bib on the neckline has to go down to her waist, which keeps me from loving the dress, but the color is so pretty, and she looks lovely.

 
Gong Seung-yeon (Introverted Boss), in another of the champagne dresses. I like the sleeves on this one. I kind of want someone to make me a T-shirt with that neckline.

 
D.O. (My Annoying Brother) picked up his second popularity award in the film section two years in a row. The blue tux is my favorite.

 
Kim Tae-ri has been Chungmuro’s new It Girl all year long, and was nominated in the new actress category for her performance in the Daesang-winning film The Handmaiden. I’ve seen her in better dresses though; this one looks strangely casual, even though it’s beaded and sparkly.

 
Lee Se-young, who picked up a new actress award for Laurel Tree Tailors (even though she debuted at the age of four). I love the neckline and the navy blue color.

 
Kim Haneul (On the Way to the Airport) somehow finds a way to wear a slightly different version of the same wedding dress to every red carpet, which I suppose is a feat in and of itself?

 
Kim Go-eun (The Lonely Shining Goblin) wore the most confusing suit-dress-coat hybrid thing (there are full-length shots in the gallery). I like her simple ponytail, which was clearly a trend of the night, but I wish she’d just worn a sleek white pantsuit—at least that’s a look I could get behind.
