Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

Has the week already gone by? Ever since we launched the redesigned site, I have no concept of time anymore. I suppose that could be a problem, but then again, it’s not like awareness of time ever helped a drama addict anyway, right? Maybe this is my chance to watch ALL OF THE DRAMAS. Who wants to race me? –girlfriday

javabeans

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: Aw, it’s over. This drama was a constant pick-me-up for the past two months, and I’ll miss this awesome couple lighting up the screen and putting a silly smile on my face. I loved the romance so much that when I see interviews with the actors where they both laugh off their chemistry and talk about the romance as fictional, I want to clap my hands over my ears and go, “La la la la la, let me have my fantasy! Take your reality out of here!”

Father, I’ll Take Care of You: We’re in the final stretch, and things are happening, finally. I find Sung-joon’s place in the Great Chaebol Escape plotline pretty shoehorned in, but as it brings him back to the focus of the story and puts him in contact with Dong-hee, I’m not complaining. I have a feeling the Hyun-woo reconciliation will be weak and soppy for my tastes, but I suppose I would prefer to end the drama with him at a peaceful resolution, so okay. I did at least appreciate when Grandma told her family essentially, I hate that guy but you have to admit he has a point, and when you compare him to our trainwreck kids, he’s accomplished a lot. I just wanted somebody to acknowledge that!

Father Is Strange: Aw, Lee Joon, the idol-turned-robot-actor who doesn’t understand human emotions! I can’t imagine him actually moving in with the cozy Byun family, but I’ll enjoy watching all the shenanigans that ensue, because how could they not? And while I don’t yet get romancey vibes between him and Jung So-min, I loved watching them bond and become buddies, since he could really use a friend (and I mean a real one that isn’t a turtle). The only sibling’s storyline I really don’t care for is Ryu Hwa-young’s; I like her when she’s the bratty maknae in the family, but her workplace romance makes me yawn.

The Liar and His Lover: Yay, the mood took an upswing this week! Basically, when So-rim is happy, the drama is happy, and this week gave me a lot of feel-good moments to appreciate. Plus, I much prefer when Han-gyul is getting along with his Crude Play boys rather than fighting with them, even though I like that their conflict is layered and interesting and genuine. Just, you know, they can work that out gradually while still going on beachside MTs and drinking parties, right?

girlfriday

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: It would’ve been really nice to see Bong-soon take on her role as a superhero earlier in the series, but I’m satisfied that she embraced her strength, found her purpose, rescued her prince, and got her happily ever after and then some. I really needed that triple-sugarcoated ending to help ease the pain of letting this drama go. I’ll do it… I’ll let go… someday…

Chicago Typewriter: The hero is so bipolar that I feel like I can never trust a nice moment, because he’s sure to follow it up with something assy, making me wonder why we never advance past this cycle where he puts his foot in his mouth and then reluctantly apologizes to the heroine. I still see promise in the overarching mystery with the past lives, but come on, can we go there faster?

Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: I was SO confused this week, because Gil-dong was suddenly not imprisoned anymore, and I was convinced I had accidentally skipped an episode. Did the editor fall asleep on the job? Seriously, why would you make the hero’s big jailbreak happen offscreen, only to spend the rest of the week in limbo just waiting for the big fight to start? You have until Monday to make it up to me.

Whisper: On the one hand, I’m happy for the good guys finally gaining a little ground and not always being so badly beaten by sneakier bastards. Go team! On the other hand, the merry-go-round of one-upmanship is starting to get predictable, so I would like something—anything—else to happen right about now to really shake up the whole game.

Mystery Queen: I finally had some time to check this show out, and I ended up liking how breezy and watchable it is. It’s a very pleasant, lighthearted procedural reminiscent of Castle, full of just enough murder mystery to keep it technically in the genre, but mostly driven by likable characters with a lot of quirks. The banter is fun, and the non-romantic chemistry between Choi Kang-hee and Kwon Sang-woo is refreshing.

Crime Scene 3: Woohoo, Crime Scene is back! I just love the gamified Clue-as-variety-show concept of this program, and have been waiting impatiently for JTBC to bring it back. The episode they aired was only a prequel to the new season—introducing new fixed members like Jung Eun-ji and Kim Ji-hoon and first guest Song Jae-rim—but it got me all excited for a whole new batch of murder mysteries to solve. I get so nerdy when I watch this show. *finger pointed to the sky* And the culprit is…!

Whisper: Man, I love this writer. Each word carries a gravitas that stirs my soul and makes me question the whole idea of morality. I love how each twist and turn is revealed with such precision and grace, and keeps me on my toes. Oh, and Lee Bo-young is the epitome of all badass girls.

My Secret Romance: This series is a fluff-fest, but I’m enjoying the bright colors and cheesiness. Sung Hoon is a nice tall glass of water to look at, but the man himself has great comedic timing. (If you don’t believe me, you should check out some of his interviews. He’s hilarious.)

Currently recapping: Whisper

Super Family 2017: I feel like a broken record, constantly expressing my love for this little family. But as long as this drama remains my weekly dose of comfort and joy, then a broken record I shall be.

Radiant Office: I love Ho-won and the Suicide Squad to bits and wish them all the best as they continue to figure out their various situations, but right now I’m living for those teeny-tiny moments between Kang-ho and Suk-kyung. Between this and Super Family 2017, I’m beginning to realize that I’m probably a little too invested in Hoya’s noona romances. Just a little. Maybe. (But everyone’s gonna live happily ever after, right? RIGHT?)

Chicago Typewriter: The only thing that’s got me hooked is the mystery surrounding Go Kyung-pyo’s character, which means I’ll probably keep watching for at least another week but I don’t know if it’s enough for me to stick with the show until the end.

chickachunga

Radiant Office: Hyun, I — against my better judgment — trusted you!!!! But no matter because I believe in the Suicide Squad, and they will prevail no matter what life throws at them. Show, just please promise that Ki-taek won’t end up with a terminal illness; that’ll be too much for my heart. Still loving this underrated gem!

Whisper: Do Bong-soon didn’t end up being the feminist super heroine that blew me away, but that’s okay, because I have Shin Young-joo. She is just 100% pure badassery. She referred to a bunch of thugs as “babies” and they still carried out her command. Ooh baby! I’m just amazed at how much gets jam-packed in each episode; it usually takes other dramas sixteen episodes to cover as much ground as Whisper does in just one.

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: I guess Bong-soon kinda redeemed herself at the end, but still it makes me sad to think about the hours I spent drooling over all the promo posters and teasers, and dreaming about Ji-soo’s third painful-but-delicious noona romance (that never actually came to fruition). Gah, I spent so much time in front of my laptop, fast-forwarding through all the boring bits, rewinding once I got to the end in order to comb through it again to find something redeemable, only to realize there were no interesting parts.

This list is embarrassingly long, but I think that's what happens when I get to finals and get stressed (or maybe I just have no social life^^):

Tunnel: I love this show more and more each week, I'm totally looking forward to understanding how everything about our serial killer plays out. Is he originally from the future, did he jump to the future in the middle? Did he time travel at all with Kwang Ho? Or are there two serial killers, like I'd thought at the beginning?

Liar and His Lover: This is shaping up to be one of my favorite shows of 2017. Nothing groundbreaking, but oh so cute (and I love the characters!)

General and I: (Chinese) You know how we all like LaHL for being super cute and quick to resolve angst? Well this is opposite of that. I think I just ffd through 15 episodes to even get my OTP on the same screen together, and with only 10 left in the show I'm hoping they stay together this time.

SWDBS: I have sloooowly been losing my investment in this show for weeks now, so I wasn't super upset when the ending wasn't all I'd wanted. And then again it was, with my lowered expectations: cute, fluffy, revisited all the right characters and made me smile.

Mystery Queen: I haven't caught episode 6 yet, and I absolutely love the quirky setup and characters. However, that can only hold me out so long and I hope there's an arching story that picks up soon. I want to see my team in serious action!

I guess 5 isn't too super bad, right? Lol I also watched the first ten minutes of Surgeons, a Chinese drama that I liked the trailers for... initial thoughts are that it reminds me of a soap, but we'll see. And I want to catch the premier of Man to Man, and I've heard so many things about Chicago Typewriter I really want to check it out (plus I want to finally read @michykdrama 's recap of the first 2 episodes!) Thank goodness it's the weekend, I guess!

Basically, when So-rim is happy, the drama is happy

Now isn't that a devious way to make viewers care for Sorim. kkkkk Just for that, we now want her to be happy.

Yay, the mood took an upswing this week!

It was half and half for me. Episode 9 was mostly angst (in a good way) and Episode 10 was when the mood came up.

So, I made this comment sometime back, but I don't know why its not showing up here. Maybe I didn't click the send button properly. So, just posting it again.

Mystery queen is like castle? I had no idea. And I am super happy thst girlfriday has watched castle! Even though I have not watched the last two seasons, It's the only american series that I have been able to fully embrace and enjoy watching. It's like reading agatha christie books for me but with the central loveline and a bromance. But, people in my locality mostly watch american shows like game of thrones, breaking bad or something along those lines that I basically think nobody else has watched castle. And there is this sitcom that I like too called the middle which is also not popular. So, I have just accepted that with respect to american series, my taste is just weird, lol. I recently also watched stranger things (after my brother's constant nagging to watch it) and that's really good too. The kids were awesome! On kdrama front, I am watching liar and misaeng (only two more episodes to go :( ). Also, I want to thank you guys for the view in context update regarding the comments section. It makes it easier to locate comments!

- Chicago Typewriter: the story is keeping me glued to the screen every time. I really love it.

Need to find a replacement show since SWDBS ended...was thinking about Let's fight ghost!

Yesterday I watched the movie Twenty...haven't seen anything this funny in a while.

I liked Man to Man too. Sure, the story jumped a whole lot but they needed to establish his background in less then 30 minutes of time frame which they did well. I liked the overall James Bond meets reverse Bodyguard. Also how is Park Hae Jin so charming. I swear I almost died everytime he said 'You are pretty' looking into the camera.

Tunnel: Love it. Started watching it for Choi Jin Hyunk, but its so great in itself. The past two episodes have been especially intriguing now that we're edging closer to piecing together the time-travel-serial-killings mystery. So much emotional impact too. I couldn't watch Kwang Ho's tears when learnt about Yeon Sook's fate. But that bromance with Seo Joon, every week it gets better. It doesn't veer into melodrama either, the balance is well-done.

Mystery Queen: Ive enjoyed it till Episode 5, Ep6 was a bit of a letdowner, I want more ajumma-detective crime solving shenanigans, not emotional backstory and family drama!

Tried out My Secret Romance, couldn't make it past the first episode, its cheesy but in an awful way, and the heroine is incredibly unendearing. Even Sang Hoon's hotness is not worth this. Really is nothing like 1%, which was cheesy but in a delicious, heartwarming way.

Now I'm holding out for Suspicious Partner, the teasers look so fun!

Currently watching:

- The Liar and His Lover ---> Now that Han-gyul finally(!) manned up and confessed to So-rim it became ultimate fluff fest, and I love it. Their silly, smitten smiles are everything.

- My Secret Romance --> Not sure if I'll stick around; I watched first week's episodes and well... It's cliché af and I feel like plot is dated and dull, compared to stories that are written these days. I know it's a standard rom-com, so I shouldn't expect miracles, but these days even rom-coms are trying to get out of the box and be interesting, so why wouldn't this one? Still, I want to give it a chance. Why? Probably because I'm a masochist. Or my inner pervert is out. After all, they did start off with a bang (pun totally intended).

- Radiant Office --> Ho-won and Woo-jin are too cute for words, and I don't even mind that we still haven't gotten big romantic developments. This comfortable relationship they currently have is great in my opinion.
P.S. How awesome Ki-taek is? Seriously, I love this man.

- Chicago Typewriter --> This is big one, guys. I love everything about this show, and I'm afraid of how fast it became my favourite. I love directing, the vibe it has (those instances of melancholy, sadness even, remind me a little bit of Goblin). I love the music, the OST is amazing. The plot is fascinating and feels really imaginative; I love smart and gripping writing like this. I'm glued to the screen the entire time and find myself disappointed when it ends, wanting to see more. And acting... I'm not gonna elaborate on that, because it would get way too long (it already is, though...); I'm just goint to say this: Yoo Ah-in. Don't get me wrong, I love the entire cast and I think they are doing a great job (in process of developing a huge girl crush on Im Soo-jung), but he is 'the one' for me. First, Se-joo is a petty and rude asshole. In the next moment he's witty and cool. Then he's entertaining as hell with his diva fits and random jealousy. And then, out of nowhere, he hits me in the face with his desperation, vulnerability, doubts, anger and stubborn, yet admirable pride. I love his bipolar self to bits and I love Yoo Ah-in for doing such a marvelous job portaying this character. My crush from Sungkyunkwan Scandal days came back in full force.

Rebel: First half was good, second half is starting to flag a bit.
My Secret Romance: Guilty pleasure, will we see more intimacy from our OTP?
Mystery Queen: Favorite of current shows.

My Friday night was missing something, and I realized there's no longer min min and bong bong to follow :( Thanks SWDBS for introducing me to the world of PHS <3 and looking forward to the continuing growth of PHS and PBY's career.

How is Man to man? It's first episode ratings apparently surpassed SWDBS's first episode, making it JTBC's highest ranked 1st episode to date.

I'm currently only following Tunnel. It's some intense storyline! Love it!

I was watching Whisper but dropped it a few episodes ago, because Ji Sung's Defendant captivated me more. I don't know why I didn't follow it when aired back in January.... will come back to Whisper once I'm done marathoning Defendant.

Also tineybeanie, I'm glad I'm not the only one who just did not get the hype around do bong soon. your thoughts match mine when it comes to that show!

SWDBS: I was sad to see the last episode of Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. I will miss seeing Bong Bong and Min Min every week.
TLAHL: Better episodes this week. Baby steps as they progress to a stronger relationship. All the cuteness made up for the previous week's heavier episode. HanGyul and SoRim are just cute together.
Have yet to check out the new shows Man to Man and My Secret Romance. May just marathon both now..who needs sleep?!

Currently Watching
Tunnel - Daebak and I love Choi Jin Hyuk's acting and his bromance with Yoon Hyung MIn and the Chief

The Liar and his lover - I like Lee Hyun Woo as an actor and at first I didn't want to watch the drama even for him because of the bad comments that I read in episode 1 but did since I like him and there's not a lot of drama to watch for I decided to give it a try. And i kinda like it maybe because I like watching drama with Music and drama that focus on how to become a real star (singer/actor). It's one of the drama that make you feel good and wants to go back to your high school life :D

Queen of Mystery
Whisper

Chicago Typewriter - Yoo Ah In
Man to man - the story and the whole cast :D

Netflix bought the rights to Man to Man. It's being broadcast the day after its broadcast in Korea (or an hour delay, I can't remember) on Netflix in all countries except the USA. In the US, they're releasing it in two 8 episode blocks, although it's not clear exactly when. Their are articles about it in the news section here on Drama Beans.

Tineybeanie, thank you! I loved the concept, and Park Bo Young, and the teasers ad JISOO I thought this time he could finally have a *fraction* of a romance. I even enjoyed it's...all over the place-ness, and thought "you know I can just enjoy it for what it is" but when the main couple didn't spark for me, the B-plots only kind of held my attention, and the writing kept sagging....when my 2nd-lead didn't get the time of day, it couldn't keep me. I loved it's potential but so happy to read that someone else felt a little disappointed too.
