Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: Episode 12

It has now gotten to the point where I need a packet of throat lozenges next to me when I watch this show, as I’m about to lose my voice from either happy squeals or terrified shrieks. As usual, Strong Woman has us waffling from one end of the spectrum to the other, with no breaks for a little grey area downtime. Between our swoon-worthy main couple and the psychotic kidnapper, I never know what this show is going to throw at us. All I can say is: Hang on to your emotions, kids, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride…

Episode 12: “Help Me”

Backtracking a bit, we pick up earlier that night when Bong-soon and Min-hyuk are having dinner together. Min-hyuk adorably switches noodle bowls with Bong-soon, giving her his untouched food and taking her nearly empty bowl. Bong-soon immediately switches it back though, wondering just how many women he’s switched bowls with before. This of course leads to bickering over the existence of any previous girlfriends. Oh, you two.

Min-hyuk changes the subject, grumping about how she still calls him CEO Ahn. He cutely says that they should call one another something else when they’re alone together, but Bong-soon casually asks, “Why do we need a name for each other? Are we in some special relationship or something?”

Hahaha, Min-hyuk’s face immediately falls and he starts ranting (loudly) that they’ve already “done” everything together and there isn’t much left to do. “If this isn’t dating, then what is?” The mortified Bong-soon tries to shush him, but Min-hyuk scandalously gasps at her wicked views on dating and modestly crosses his arms over his chest like he’s afraid she’ll jump him at any moment.

Bong-soon’s dad closes up shop while Mom counts her precious money. She still feels uneasy even though the police (claim to) have caught the culprit, so Dad suggests she call Bong-soon to make sure she’s alright. Mom dismisses the idea that they have to worry about for their daughter, and Dad immediately takes issue, calling Bong-soon his precious girl. Awww, such a great dad.

Oh no. Kyung-shim gets off a bus with her red suitcase and starts wheeling her way, unaware that the kidnapper, Jang-hyun, is right across the street. She continues to walk through the alleys, oblivious to the danger until Jang-hyun pops out in front of her. He gives her a chilling smirk before grabbing her.

With Kyung-shim’s screams echoing in our ears, we return to Gook-doo and his men as they close in on Hee-ji. At the last minute, the hooded man following her takes a different turn — just an innocent bystander after all. Hee-ji instead turns a corner and screams… but it’s just Gook-doo rushing to an unnecessary rescue. The rest of his team converge, and they yell in frustration to realize that the kidnapper isn’t here.

Bong-soon and Min-hyuk walk home, and Bong-soon pauses when a police car races by with its siren wailing. At the same time, the kidnapper drops Kyung-shim’s tracking bracelet on the ground and stalks off with Bong-soon’s unconscious bestie over his shoulder.

Min-hyuk stops Bong-soon outside her house, worried about hearing police sirens in her neighborhood. Taking her hands, he tells her, “No matter how strong and unique you are, you are still someone I want to protect.” Bong-soon smiles and counters that it’s her job to protect him, then the two engage in a cute round of, “You go in first,” “No, you go first.”

In the alley where Kyung-shim was taken, a homeless man happens across her belongings. He grabs both her suitcase and police tracker, sneaking off with the evidence and conveniently cleaning the scene for our villain.

Gook-doo’s team returns, agitated over missing the bad guy. They make the connection that Jang-hyun was targeting Hee-ji due to her relation to Gook-doo, and the team captain instructs his men to quickly wrap up any other cases that they’re working on so they can focus on catching this guy. Heh, Cap gives Gook-doo an assignment as well: “Calm down.”

Gook-doo overhears his sunbaes saying that it feels like they’re being watched, since the culprit is always one step ahead. He remembers seeing the bugging tech in Jang-hyun’s office and looks around the station house, suddenly suspicious. Finally!

Cap and another detective stake out the junkyard. Jang-hyun’s single employee is hard at work, and Cap wonders if the man really has nothing to do with his boss’ crimes. He asks the detective about a tracker they put on Jang-hyun’s phone, but it looks like he’s either turned off his phone or is using one they don’t know about.

As the two swear at the kidnapper’s cleverness, Jang-hyun drives in through a secret entrance and carries Kyung-shim down into the Dungeon of Doom. He unties her legs and she immediately tries to crawl away, but stops when he yells, “Do. Bong. Soon!”

Jang-hyun slowly backs Kyung-shim into a corner, asking if she thinks her friend will protect her now. He finishes untying her hands and she scrambles away, but he snaps that he didn’t untie her so she could escape, shouting, “Kneel down. Kneel down and beg for forgiveness!”

The terrified Kyung-shim sobs heartbreakingly as she kneels before him. She raises her hands and whimpers through her gag, begging desperately. Jang-hyun just grabs her hair and yells at her to beg harder. You sick, evil bastard.

In stark contrast to that horror, Bong-soon happily gets ready for bed. She eagerly texts Kyung-shim to tell her about Min-hyuk’s confession, and oh crap, Jang-hyun texts back using Kyung-shim’s phone, pretending to be the very girl he just traumatized.

Fishing for info on the super strong heroine, Jang-hyun uses Kyung-shim’s “voice” to text that “she’s” always been jealous of her strength. Bong-soon buys it hook, line, and sinker, and completely reveals her weakness to the psycho, reminding “Kyung-shim” that she loses her strength if she hurts an innocent person. (Argh!)

Jang-hyun smiles ever so slightly to find a weakness. Thankfully, his response to Bong-soon’s text doesn’t sound very Kyung-shim-ish, and Bong-soon notes that something is off. In a nearby subway tunnel, the homeless guy rifles through Kyung-shim’s suitcase and puts her tracking bracelet on his own wrist.

Gook-doo finally puts on his smarty pants and asks his teammates why Jang-hyun would have come into the station to report himself. Answer: to place a hidden camera. The whole team scrambles to search the office while Gook-doo slowly walks over to the TV monitor, realizing it’s the most likely place. In his lair, Jang-hyun smiles as he watches Gook-doo find his hidden camera, smirking, “You just found it? Idiot cops.”

Oh double crap. Jang-hyun’s employee comes into the secret lair, and the kidnapper hands him an envelope of money for the man’s mother’s hospital bills as well as a handful of loaded syringes. He is in on it.

Jang-hyun instructs his minion to start starving the women tomorrow: “Since they aren’t exercising, their bodies are becoming uglier.” He gives special instruction to starve “the new girl” for a week, as she’s too fat. (That is just sick.) Minion is apparently a junkie and starts shooting up with one of the syringes while his monstrous master grins at the monitors, “The police know I’m the criminal. Now the game begins.”

Min-hyuk is hard at work designing an upgraded character for Bong-soon’s game. Heading to bed, he sends Bong-soon an adorable snapshot video of himself (complete with pink hearts) saying, “Good night, Bong Bong.” Bong-soon scoffs a bit, but she does send one back, “Good night, Min Min.”

“Min Min” loses his mind at her cuteness and ends up rolling around on his bed and giggling into his pillow. Heh, he replays the video over and over, then tries to smack himself out of it since he has to go to sleep, “So that I can dream about my Bong Bong.” He lasts about five seconds before pulling out his phone to play it again, beaming.

Sadly, when Min-hyuk does fall asleep, he has a nightmare of Bong-soon getting attacked in her bed. He calls out to her to use her strength, but Bong-soon can only choke, “My strength has disappeared!” Please don’t be a premonition of things to come.

At work the next morning, Bong-soon is thrilled at the new character design for her video game mini-me. She delicately suggests that the character’s eyes are slightly too big, but Min-hyuk doesn’t see it, “Your eyes are big. They are bigger and prettier than this anyway.” Secretary Gong rolls his own eyes at the pair of them.

Bong-soon grins that the character does look just like her, but suggests they shorten the legs a little bit. Heh, Secretary Gong mutters that they’d need to erase more than just a little bit, then Bong-soon glares daggers at the guy and he literally slaps himself in penance.

Boss Tak continues on his poop-inspired journey of self-discovery. He gets a message from his subordinate, Jaws, warning about Bong-soon’s kiddos who are out for revenge in honor of their noonim. Apparently Jaws gave the kids his Boss’s phone number, and they choose that moment to call him to yell with all their adolescent fury.

Boss Tak hangs up on the teenagers as his bus comes to a stop, but — as luck would have it — all the other passengers disembark to reveal that the irate youngsters are on that same bus with him. Thankfully, the kids don’t immediately recognize the white-robed Boss Tak, but when they call him back, his ringing phone raises suspicions. He quickly calls out for the driver to stop and makes a getaway before the kiddos can connect the dots.

The office doppelgänger, Dong-pyung, gets a bit of revenge on Bong-soon by jumping out from behind her desk to startle her. He picks on her “lame” game, saying that no one would ever play it, then he starts muttering that he can’t understand why Min-hyuk chose her over him.

Dong-pyung orders her to get him coffee, but Bong-soon sweetly threatens, “If you really need me to make your coffee again, shall we have the same talk from back then, that day, in the conference room?” He rages ineffectively at her nerve, but Secretary Gong comes in just then and he leaves in a huff, but not before slapping the secretary’s butt on the way out.

Gook-doo’s police chief fumes over the hidden video camera, but the team has no proof that it was placed there by Jang-hyun. Cap tries to reason that they have the wrong criminal locked up, but Chief orders him to just let this go.

Boss Tak’s journey ends at a backwoods temple. He respectfully bows to a tree, and we pan up to see a monk perched waaaay up in the branches. The Boss’ loyal underlings have followed their leader to the temple and try to convince him to come back, but to no avail. He’s decided to start a new life under the teachings of his new master, the tree monk: Nizamutiniz. He reverently states that the man is an immigrant from India, but Jaws and his buddy stare at the very Korean-looking monk, “Indian?”

Just then, the kiddos – who have also tracked Boss Tak to the temple – arrive, spouting swears and toting the near empty jug of poop alcohol.

The kiddos and injured gangsters face off in the temple yard as Wild West music plays in the background. The two sides posture dramatically, until Boss Tak instructs Jaws to use his “dangerous” martial arts.

The boys back up nervously, and the two men unleash their… skills? Pffft. In their condition it’s more like Crouching Crutches, Hidden Bandages. The kids jump in to fight back, and it is one big mess of flailing high schoolers and limping gangsters.

Before anyone can get (more) injured, Monk Nizamutiniz comes running out, yelling at them to Shtawp it and banging his mystical gourd for emphasis

Bong-soon goes hunting around the office for Min-hyuk. He pops out from an auditorium and tugs her back inside with him. Bong-soon looks around at the empty room, and Min-hyuk slyly points out, “Nobody will come in here today.” She laughs, asking what he’s going to do if they’re alone, but he teases right back that it looks like she’s expecting something.

Min-hyuk slowly walks towards her, and Bong-soon backpedals up against a wall. The two are still joking with one another until Min-hyuk puts his hands on either side of her, bringing their faces close together. Hubba, hubba.

His arms caged around her, Min-hyuk softly promises to protect her, just like this, so the rest of the world can’t hurt her.

Min-hyuk reminds her that she said she needed time to sort out her feelings, then hesitantly asks her to answer him now. Bong-soon replies, “Ah, about that…” then she smiles happily up at him, her answer clear. Min-hyuk’s nerves melt away, and he gives this beautiful smile as he says, “No, you don’t have to say it. I can see everything.”

So happy he that can’t contain himself, Min-hyuk jumps away, all jittery and giddy as he alternates between clutching his heart and making grabby motions towards her. He eventually settles on petting her head. You cutie. Bong-soon chuckles at him and Min-hyuk bursts out, “Don’t laugh like that! I’m getting flustered!” Rawr!

Bong-soon tries to tug him out of the room, but he pulls her back, suddenly serious. Min-hyuk starts to slowly lean down as though to kiss her, and Bong-soon timidly closes her eyes, but he seems to sense her hesitation and pulls back at the last moment, kissing her forehead instead. They both smile adorably and head out together.

Back at the temple, Boss Tak and the kiddos line up and kneel before Monk Nizamutiniz as Boss Tak gets, uh, baptized? Nizamutiniz gives him the most passive aggressive baptism ever, splashing water at the man while instructing him let all the trash flow out of his heart and let go of his awful deeds, previous convictions, and rude behavior.

Heh, the leader of the kiddos wags his finger at Boss Tak as all his misdeeds are listed, until Nizamutiniz moves down the line and starts throwing water and insults blessings at the rest of them. He “cleanses” them all, admonishing Jaws for his previous jail time and yelling at the kiddos for cussing, ditching class, and disappointing their parents.

Boss Tak rises up to give a dramatic speech about being reborn, but Nizamutiniz offhandedly interrupts to tell them that it’s lunchtime. Oh, the reverence.

As Boss Tak, his men, and the kiddos are introduced to Naan bread (a traditional Indian food), Min-hyuk steals Bong-soon away for a team building workshop. He gives a complicated spiel about how a change in location is great for idea generation, but clearly the boy is hankering for some alone time with his lady love.

When they arrive, Min-hyuk opens the curtains for Bong-soon (with some Michael Jackson flair), and smiles when she squeals at the ocean view, but the smirk quickly falls when Bong-soon wants to get right to work on her game presentation.

The “workshop” commences, and as Bong-soon moons over her character, Min-hyuk moons over her. He has to be snapped back to reality (twice!) and gets adorably flustered, asking if it’s hot in the room as he flaps his jacket to cool off. Hee!

Claiming that it’s too warm, Min-hyuk wants to go outside. Bong-soon points out that they’re supposed to be working, and he stares disbelievingly at her. He asks if she’s really thinking about work right now, but she completely misses his point and reminds him that he brought them there to get new ideas. The frustrated CEO saccharinely orders her to come out with him, then walks away muttering “’Ideas,’ my butt.”

The two go exploring in the small seaside town, and soon they’re laughing and joking as they wander around. They take a few super-cute selfies together and end up on the beach, playing in the waves.

After splishing and splashing, Min-hyuk grows serious. He picks up a stick, and Bong-soon watches as he draws half of a giant heart in the sand. Standing at the base of the heart, he calls out:

“Bong-soon-ah! I’m going to stand here. Will you come to me?”

(Oh. My. Gawd. This is it. Shush! Everyone be quiet!)

With his heart in his eyes, Min-hyuk stares almost pleadingly at Bong-soon, waiting for her answer. She waits barely a moment before smiling slightly and grabbing another stick. She walks over to the top of the giant heart and draws in the other half, completing the heart and meeting Min-hyuk at its base.

The two gaze at one another and simultaneously take one tiny step towards the other. Min-hyuk finally bridges the gap, reaching out to gently cradle Bong-soon’s face before slowly leaning down. Bong-soon’s eyes flutter closed, and the two kiss. It’s a sweet and perfect moment, and as the waves crash, they kiss again, standing where their two hearts meet.

As Min-hyuk and Bong-soon share their lovely smooches, Mom crows to her ladies-in-waiting that she believes her daughter and son-in-law are officially dating. She’s decided to start one hundred days of prayer, since she still thinks the best route is for the two of them to sleep together immediately. (Ugh).

Min-hyuk drives Bong-soon home after their “workshop,” opening the car door with some more MJ flair. They engage in another round of who will leave first, when he suddenly calls her back. Bending down, he stares into her eyes and tells her that he always misses her when she leaves. He asks to just look at her for a moment so he can remember this when she’s away.

Bong-soon smiles back at him, and he softly adds, “Thank you for coming into my life.” Then he gently cups her face before sending her inside. Once she’s out of sight, Min-hyuk sighs that he misses her already. Oh my heart.

Bong-soon can barely hold in her smiles as she boots up her computer. Bong-ki comes into her room, and she mildly freaks him out with her lovey-dovey good mood. He asks if his sister has heard form Kyung-shim about when she’s coming to visit again, and Bong-soon remembers that she hasn’t spoken to her friend in a while.

She texts Kyung-shim a “What’s up?” and “Kyung-shim” (aka creepy, evil bastard Jang-hyun) texts back, “Hi Bong-soon-ah.” Something about that reply triggers Bong-soon’s spidey senses, so she calls Kyung-shim. Of course, no one picks up.

Bong-soon starts to panic and calls Gook-doo to ask if he can locate Kyung-shim’s tracking bracelet. She worries that something seems off since she had left for Busan a while ago, but she’s not sure if she made it there. Gook-doo immediately calls in for the location of Kyung-shim’s tracker.

Jang-hyun reads through Kyung-shim’s previous texts and we see that Kyung-shim had always responded to Bong-soon with “Hey yo, Bong Bong!” Bong-soon texts her friends to please call, but “Kyung-shim” answers she’s busy right now. Bong-soon sends a final message, asking if “Dol Kong” is doing alright. She nervously waits, barely breathing, until the response comes that Dol Kong is doing fine. Bong-soon gasps and runs out the door.

Meanwhile, Gook-doo traces Kyung-shims tracker, finding it adorning the wrist of our evidence snatching homeless man. He brings the guy in for questioning, but all he can give them is a rough estimate of when he found the suitcase. Cap has had enough and yells that they’ll go catch the bastard themselves.

At that moment, the police chief comes in and warns everybody to leave this case alone, or they’re fired. Gook-doo doesn’t even hesitate for a moment, charging out with Cap and his entire team following right past the sputtering police chief.

Min-hyuk gazes up at the game room’s starry ceiling, missing his Bong-soon. His calls and texts go unanswered, and he wonders if she’s still working on her game presentation for tomorrow.

Cap and the guys go to the junkyard and comb through the place. Bong-soon also runs to the junkyard, and Gook-doo rushes forward to stop her. Bong-soon frantically yells that she sent a message to Kyung-shim’s phone asking about her dog, Dol Kong. Apparently her dog died last year – she and Bong-soon had even held a funeral for him – but Kyung-shim’s message had responded that he was just fine.

Bong-soon swears that if the bastard has touched one hair on Kyung-shim’s head, she won’t stay still, then she races past Gook-doo into the junkyard.

The cops question evil minion, showing him Kyung-shim’s picture, but the man plays dumb. Running out of options, the cops figure that Jang-hyun probably wouldn’t have hidden the women here at the junkyard since it’s too obvious.

Bong-soon dashes past them, but pauses when she catches a whiff of the odor she smelled on Jang-hyun. She peers into the corner and sees a storage container (the one we know contains the secret entrance to the Dungeon of Doom). Before she can investigate further, Gook-doo manages to drag her away. No! Go check it out! Argh!

Bong-soon returns home a shaking, nervous wreck. She gets Min-hyuk’s texts, but she’s too worried to respond.

Min-hyuk gets pouty about his unanswered messages and worries that she might have gone out on her own again. He takes out a special key necklace (presumably for Bong-soon) and replaces the center jewel with what looks like a tracking device. Normally, I’d say that’s creepy, but this is Min-hyuk, so let’s call it endearing.

Oh god, no. Bong-soon gets another message from Kyung-shim, but this time it’s a prerecorded video, and Bong-soon’s hands shake so badly she can barely hit play. Immediately on the screen is a crying and terrified Kyung-shim in the Dungeon of Doom.

Bong-soon screams, and Kyung-shim desperately calls out through the camera that she’s fine as she begs Bong-soon not to come here. In response, a masked Jang-hyun kicks Kyung-shim in the face, knocking her down, then settles himself in front of the camera.

Jang-hyun taunts Bong-soon, “You want to save your friend, right? Then don’t report it to the police.” He warns that the moment she reports this, he’ll kill Kyung-shim. Kyung-shim continues to whimper out for Bong-soon not to come here, so Jang-hyun jerks her up and slings an arm around her. Smiling at Bong-soon, he goads her, “Try and come here. Or else your friend will die.”

Jang-hyun pulls up his shirt to reveal the bruise that Bong-soon gave him, then he leans into the camera, “You have to come here and apologize to me.” He laughs like the psychotic freak he is as Bong-soon sobs in terror for her friend.

As the video ends, Bong-soon grips her phone, calming her trembling hands. Slowly, her fearful expression grows angry and determined. She runs out of her room, and the next thing we see is her standing in front of Min-hyuk with tears streaming down her face as she pleads, “Help me.”

COMMENTS

Oh man, I need a hug. Gah! What more can this show do to me!? So many times during this episode I felt my heart drop as we repeatedly see-sawed from cute and cuddly to oh-god-I-want-my-mommy, and it seems like it’s intentional. I can’t deny that there’s a definite sucker punch aspect that comes from the rapidly switching extremes. However, my emotions are nearly shot, and if the show is doing this on purpose, then I honestly can’t tell if it’s genius, or sadistic. I didn’t sign up to be a guinea pig!

Ok, let’s back away from the terrifying and rewind to what was possibly the best romantic moment I’ve ever seen. I simply cannot say how much I loved that beach kiss, and how relieved I am not to be disappointed by it. I never doubted the chemistry between these two, so I knew the eventual kiss itself would be great (which, ermahgawd, it was!), but I was concerned that the story wouldn’t give the moment justice by forcing it on us instead of letting it flow naturally. It seems I worried for nothing.

This was such a great scene in so many ways. Min-hyuk stayed true to his nature in pushing Bong-soon just slightly into the next level, but then respectfully waiting for her answer. Bong-soon was also true to character, making her decision and standing by it, never wavering as she walked to his side. And then the heart in the sand, such a simple yet perfect way to show how they’re treating one another as equals in this relationship. Each is one half of the heart, neither compromising to complete the other. Finally, there was the simultaneous single step that they took toward each other. It was a lovely callback to Min-hyuk’s comment about how it takes just one step to change from friends to lovers, and they took that one step together. It was beautiful, and touching, and I’m so happy to be able to recap it — if for no other reason than it provided a convenient excuse to re-watch that scene over and over. (But I HAVE to watch him kiss her again, you know, for recap integrity, and all that…)

Unfortunately, the other side of the coin is that I then have to watch the creepy kidnapper parts over and over as well. There are definitely a few nightmares in my future after this. I’m now terrified about Jang-hyun learning Bong-soon’s secret — is there a way he could trick her into harming an innocent? I had assumed that Bong-soon would lose her powers at some point, since the show was heavily hinting at it from the beginning, but I thought it would happen earlier so she’d have time to then gain them back at a crucial moment (ala Disney’s Hercules). But with only four episodes left, that’s a lot of plot to try and cover, and I’m worried that she’ll lose her powers without time to earn them back. Then she’ll have to accept her life without them — like her Mom. I’m not saying that she has to have her gifts to be special, but so much of this show has been about her accepting and learning to love her own strength that it’d be tragic for her to lose her power forever.

I used to be really curious about Jang-hyun and his backstory, but after this episode, I straight-up just don’t care. There is no redemption, no “Mommy didn’t love me” or “Daddy beat me” story that can justify what he’s done to these women. And now he’s forced our wonderful and spunky Kyung-shim onto her knees, terrorizing her into begging him. Nope, that’s it. I don’t need the psychoanalysis. Just give Bong-soon a real life version of that giant walnut hammer and let her have at him.

The one thing I’m still interested in learning is who his seventh bride will be. In the scene where Jang-hyun pays off Minion, the seven bride picture frames are in the background, and he’s pinned Bong-soon’s picture into the sixth frame. If she is number six, then who the heck is seven? Did he have a final, special girl in mind all along? Also, Hee-ji’s picture is still up there, so will he try for her again? So many questions, and the only thing I know for sure is we still have a long way to go. The one comforting factor is our main couple. It’s almost like dealing with the criminally insane Jang-hyun is payment for getting the insanely lovable duo of Bong-soon and Min-hyuk. I suppose that as long as they make it through to the end, then I can hyperventilate my way through the darker scenes. Though I really could still use a hug…

How does anyone not fall in love with MH? With the low "nobody's using this room today" and the backing up against the wall (Must admit I LOVE this drama cliche)... and promising to protect her? Those geeky reactions to her smiles and the way he smiled right before kissing her on her forehead? My heart...

He looks like he wants to eat her up. Though BS's only interested in thinking about upgrades for her walnut hammer, sadly LOL. And BS, bless her soul, I love her smiles - she looks as though she can't help it when she's with him, and this makes their scenes together golden.

The beach scene: The fact that he gave her time to think, and reminded her that he was waiting there. And when he finally asked if she would come to him, she came knowing that she definitely, really liked him. You could see it in her eyes. And the way he was so careful and tender with the kiss... these 2 do funny things to my heart. (And ok now that this first-kiss thing is out of the way, can they kiss like every 10 minutes or something?)

AND THEN he thanks her for coming into his life. Like he's so grateful she decided to come to him and he can't believe how lucky he was. He didn't feel self-entitled to her feelings/assume that she would have to like him back. This way, you just know that she's somebody he will definitely cherish and love. And this is very important to me.

Also I must have replayed the first few minutes more times than I should have. "What do you mean not dating? You've done almost everything with me!". Ragey MH is the cutest thing ever.

- The police officer in the blue uniform.. just... ugh. Letting go of the case quietly just for a promotion? Ignoring the fact that there are still a bunch of missing women? That's just sickening.

- Just when I thought the whole Baek Tak + highschoolers was over... there's more. I get that it's supposed to be funny but...it's getting old. It's a subplot that doesn't seem to serve any purpose any more. To me it's just a lazy filler scene and isn't really needed. Or, do they have any future purpose? Will they team up to catch the criminal like we'd predicted in the first few episodes? I don't know.

- MH's large drawing tablet makes me so jealous because I'm currently drawing on my small basic tablet (a picture of him + BS together). I want something like that too!

The way the story is going, I'm hoping that the story with the creepy kidnapper will be resolved by episode 14 or 15 (maximum), and then we'll get the last episode or the last two episodes just for the H/h and their moments. I want more kisses, sweet and also passionate. I mean this is a cable channel, so I expect them to be more generous. The first kiss was very sweetly done, but I want more!

Also I agree with you that the story with the inept gangsters and delinquent high-schoolers has gone on too long, and the inept gangsters have literally spent most of this drama in the hospital. However the actor who is playing the dual role is doing a good job. I think that the gangsters and the delinquent high-schoolers will have a role to play in saving Bong Soon. Maybe they will help MH in saving Bong Soon, or help in some key way.

The way I see it, this story is headed to Bong Soon losing her powers, and then MH will save her, and I think that the gangsters and high-schoolers will play some key role during that time. But we'll see if my interpretation of the events is correct or not.

On a side note: Can I just say that when the last scene happened, and Bong Soon barged into Min Hyuk's apartment, and tearfully looked up at him and told him to help her, she took the number 1 spot from Yoo Inna (Queen In Hyun's Man) in the cuteness/adorableness department. Now Yoo Inna is number 2 in that department IMO. She is just super super cute! Also the way Min Hyuk looks at her is just heart melting, and the height difference adds to that heart melting feeling. I agree with you, it is like he wants to eat her.

I also hope that the kidnapper subplot will be wrapped up quickly, so that we get a good episode of BS accepting her strength, embracing it, and learning to live with it (and with MH). I want some good, cute scenes because they've been the saving grace of this show!

The thing is, I would like for the high schoolers/gangsters to actually play a part in the rescue. BUT the way they've been written portrays them as mostly inept and... without a purpose. So far, all the high schoolers have done is get into trouble, get rescued by BS, worship their noonim, and then beat more people up. Aka they've really done nothing to endear themselves to me. I thought they were cute the first two times, but now they're just... annoying? Same with the gangsters - they just spend all their time bandaged and in hospital and adding no real purpose to the plot.

Oh my - Yoo Inna has a bias in my heart from Goblin, but I have to agree that PBY is just adorable. (Sidenote: From the BTS I realize that height difference is difficult to film because Hyungsik always has to stand with his legs spread open, LOL.)

I agree I am getting bored with the gangsters and high-schoolers.
They are used as a tool to show her strength and for comic relief but is getting over done.
I also agree the dual role gangster was pretty fun.

My big problem is her friend was kidnapped and saved by her and in the night when she is leaving to go home no one (police or friends -BS or her parents) went with her to keep an eye on her.
She was a victim and the culprit is still out there.
Than she gets kidnapped. That part I find stupid since BS is always telling her don't go anywhere alone.

Didn't the wrong guy get caught by the other police team and detained for these crimes? I just assumed that it was because of this that everybody reverted back to pre-serial killer/ kidnapper behaviour.

BS has warned KS that the real perp has not been caught yet, so she shouldn't be wandering about at night. KS is the one who ignores the warnings and persists in doing so.

I like the kidnapper, he's the only one with agency and purpose left. In fact he's the guy who's saving the show from falling into 'plot-what-plot' category

I just wish the police had been quicker on the game! It's already Ep 12, and the "game has only just begun"? I think part of my frustration lies in the fact that the kidnapper was just too good. You always see the police at least 5 steps behind him, bumbling around the police station and doing absolutely nothing while the criminal was running loose. This made the plot move so slowly that by this point, I'm already tired of the kidnapping plot.

It just underlines how much the police needs BS's help to resolve the kidnapper issue. The police are not smart enough to capture him because he keeps all his tracks covered. They can't even find the girls, for goodness sake, despite searching the junkyard so many times. BS, with her strength, might be more successful in finding the girls and beating the kidnapper at his own game.

0

yeah i like the kidnapper as well, in terms of him being a really good bad guy and everything you basically said. he could be a good addition to one of the criminal minds ep. i wish we got more insight into him, whilst i like the cute romance, im not to heavily into it since im not very into cute/sweet fluffy types of romance in the first place. i kinda wish the show did a better job at blending all the plot lines together in a more cohesive way. so far it feels like bong soon has been pretty distant from the kidnapper story line, which i wasnt expecting after her friend nearly got kidnapped.

When before, BT's scenes are necessary to tie up the gangster issue BS has to resolve, now they are just fillers and for the laughs. Except it's no longer as funny anymore. I can't stand the fillers anymore. They are taking away time from our OTP and kidnapper. I want BS to deal with the kidnapper fast!

Yeah! I don't think the laughs (or rather, lack thereof, since they aren't funny anymore...) are necessary at this point, not when there are serious things on hand to deal with, aka criminal and saving the girls. What was the POINT of the whole temple and enlightenment/baptism thing?

(Besides the fact that it could potentially anger a lot of people due to cultural and religious portrayals... I didn't talk about it because it's not my culture/religion and not my place to be angry, but I expected there to be some sort of backlash about it. And seeing the comments below...)

That beach scene was the sweetest confession I've watch in a while. Now it rivaled the snowman family scene from Jealousy Incarnate. Min-hyuk is so tender, but at the same time also bold. He never felt pushy because he always match his timing with Bong-soon's slower pace, and I love that.

That being said, it was extra cute when in bts those two were busy bickering about the lopsided heart they made on the sand right before they shoot the kissing scene. I'm glad though, that they decided to use that lopsided drawing since it added a touch of reality. After all, it's hard to draw a big perfect heart with only a branch. ?

Yes, the BTS was extra cute! Both bickering over how the other couldn't draw a heart properly, haha!

It might be the hopeless romantic in me speaking, but I liked that a lopsided heart shows that no love and no couple will ever be "perfect", but the two lopsided halves still come together to form a whole heart. And that describes BS and MH - they both have their own flaws but they're willing to accept each other complement each other's shortcomings.

1

@zenith The only issue is that there is no concept of a monk in Islam...

0

I do know there is no monk concept in islam I just wished the writer would know that too..

0

I think the production was aiming for a comically exaggerated imitation of something. Sort of a parody.

The monk is playing a character out of this world, just like Dong Bong Soon (a petite girl with enormous strength).

So, instead of a traditional image of a Korean Buddhist bald-headed monk, he represents different cultures and religions that do not condone violence. And his purpose in the show was to enact discipline on these bunch of unruly gangsters as well as to reconcile these two opposing teams.

0

How did they come to think Nizamuddin was a Buddhist monk? I have to agree with both of your points. ;-)

I think the point was to show that the guy wasn't a legitimate monk, but a random quack that the gang boss stupidly believes in. The gang leader's whole "revelation/spiritual awakening" is portrayed as a huge joke and his underlings think he's acting crazy. When they first find him at the temple, one of them even points out to their boss that the supposedly Indian monk does not look Indian at all, but Korean. The boss insists that they're wrong and he's a real monk, but everything the monk does is sketchy, like swearing at them while hitting them with water, mispronouncing religious terms, and offering them curry and naan which isn't even real curry and naan.

My take on this scene wasn't that it was trying to be racist through ignorance of other cultures, but that it was trying to show that BT is an idiot who can't recognize an obvious sham.

@ Salma

I felt the same way
I don't think anything in the show was meant to be taken seriously..but it does attempt to stretch your beliefs and imaginations, like,
- a super strong cutie pie
- poop wine (and why not since there's "poop" coffee in Bali, Indonesia)

And it deals with some issues like bullies. And I thought it's very interesting coz it highlights what exists in the society:

- domestic bullies
- sibling bullies
- school bullies
- work bullies
- street/gang bullies

And while it takes away some OTP moments, it's trying to highlight what persists in the society and workplace. And how we should address them because many times these bulllies are not dealt with and they cause misery for others.

Hi,

I am a Pakistani residing in Punjab, and I have a serious bone to pick with Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. The drama was amazing in the beginning with the basic premise of challenging gender stereotypes. I was so glad that a drama was going all out and challenging it...

BUT!
Episode 12 had serious racial insensitivity and cultural misrepresentation. Firstly the use of Punjabi bhangra music was a huge no-no. Bhangra music is not spiritual and hence I did not appreciate the use of Daler Mehdi to convey a kind of spiritual enlightenment for Baek Tak. Also, showing the Brahmin priest as a sort of effeminate character did not establish a good premise for South Asian spirituality... Reminded me of the 'sulky darky' label I read in The Grass is Singing by Doris Lessing. I absolutely hate it when people say 'all Asian look alike', but I would appreciate this scriptwriter to have at least put in the effort to know a little about our culture and the importance we lay in names. Our names often represent our religions in this part of the world and Nizamuddin, is well... a) a Muslim name b) the name of a sufi saint revered by many. The moment I googled Nizamuddin, the first result was Nizamuddin Aulia, who I am referring to over here. They made sure to use a name of spiritual value but I did not appreciate the feeling I got as if me and my fellow South Asians were being mocked... I wish I could communicate my frustration to the makers of a show that was supposed to challenge stereotypes and ended up reinforcing them so severely.

Same Nizamuddin I'm referring to as well. Like bluegrass, I try not to take it seriously, but it was certainly reflective of a complete and utter lack of knowledge. And, as you say, of laziness - 10 mins on Google will tell you all this, including the cultural emphasis on appropriate names. Punjabi bhangra might take a little longer.

But what made me sad was the realisation that it truly is a one sided love.

Asiya, Thank you so much for your explanation of what is wrong with those scenes. Although I did cringe because it felt off and this is dramaland so I knew they were getting it wrong, I'm just a white SoCal chick without the background to know what all was going on. That is one thing I appreciate about dramabeans...the coherent non-ranty explanations of how dramas misappropriate or wrongly stereotype. Your post and many others have helped teach me specific points of cultural awareness and sensitivity. Thank you!

It does seem like this show has picked one stereotype (female gender roles) to explore and talk about while completely ignoring or grossly over-exaggerating other stereotypes. While I would be tentatively willing to forgive ignoring because one show can't address all of society's ills, I cannot overlook the reinforcement of the other stereotypes that over-exaggerating creates.

But I wonder. Is this on purpose? To balance out the female gender role topic of Bong Soon's character? We can't talk about the wrongs of one ill without saying other stereotypes are ok (which is really what is happening)? That is just too much cultural change at one time for people to take? Or is it on accident? A somewhat subconscious, misguided attempt at lightening the serious mood of showing a girl with strength without realizing how damaging it is to those other stereotypes? I'm frustrated to the point of only recommending this show by scenes not whole episodes, but I still want to know why.

JC,

I'm going to go ahead and make a broad generalization which may be hard for some Asians to digest... when people say 'it's an Asian thing', I like to believe it covers South Asia and East Asia... we have a lot in common than what meets the eye, though maybe some basic physical differences may say otherwise. Culturally, we are all made of the similar stuff. The idea of a female lead who is super powerful is hard to fathom in Asia. Being mocked, told not to pick a fight with a boy, and being told you are weak is something we experience 24/7. Had Bong Soon just had her strength just like that, the public would have had great qualms with it. But showing things that can make it kosher for her to have these superpowers is the reason why the scriptwriters probably did what they did.

I understand that you are upset and you have every right to be but are you really surprised that this show has done another offensive being like this. Maybe rather than complaining on the internet about how South Koreans view you (which I think is rather ridiculous considering the inclusion of Christian baptism in the scene) your time would be better spent trying to eliminate the caste system and address the horrific violence against women in India. Worrying about stereotypes other people hold about you while gross social injustice is so widely accepted seems a bit like cursing at the neighborhood kids for walking through your garden while your house is burning down behind you.

Required fields are marked *

whoa first of all, everyone has the right express their anger and disappointment in the show? second of all, what you're referring to as a Christian baptism is actually a common Hindu practice where the priest blesses you with holy water after the prayer is over, while chanting. this is certainly not the type of response I would expect from anyone on DB.

1
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

So what you're trying to say is that it is pretty much exactly the same as a Christian baptism from an outsider's perspective, complete with cleansing of some sort of sin. Or trash, as the case may be. Which is kind of the whole point of the scene. The specific religion doesn't matter, the only thing that matters is the gangsters are supposedly having some kind of spiritual epiphany. It's a spoof of the gangster conversion cliche. I Is he Hindu? Is he Muslim? Is he Christian? Who cares! Let's poke fun at all of them for good measure.

As a Native American there's nothing that irritates me, personally, more than people who live in glass houses trying to stone their neighbors. Just like how the reservations need to clean up their act before pointing fingers, the outrage here is laughable. By all means, keep throwing stones at Korean producers for not being properly reverent towards your specific culture. It's not going to hurt the broadcasters anyway. But meanwhile the lower castes and the female victims of abuse aren't getting the justice that they deserve.

0

Completely agree with @shalu here.

1. You'll notice people are expressing a variety of opinions. Dramaninja and Rie below found it quite funny, for instance.

2. Are you saying that we are not allowed to express our views unless our country is perfect? Why is that? Because your country/culture is perfect so you alone are allowed to express your views?

3. Nobody is spewing hate at Korean producers 'on the internet'. This is a recap page for the episode of the show that referred to a particular culture. I don't see how you can tell the people of that culture that they cannot comment on how it was handled. That's like telling gay people they cannot comment on how homosexuality has been handled by the show.

I don't mean to sound aggressive, but this is a strand of the 'if you don't like it, leave' - school of thought, that gets me very worked up. >_<

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Nope. My country was far from perfect, which is why this irritates me so. It is so ridiculously common for people to throw around buzzwords like "cultural appropriation" to make themselves feel good while ignoring the very real, systematic abuse and corruption in their backyard.

Want an example from my own culture? I have seen people pitch fits over the popularization of dream catchers and headdresses. It's all a show to make them feel like they're a good person. These same people will willfully ignore widespread addiction, domestic abuse, corruption, and subpar education on native reservations. But hey, they made a big stink about some celebrity wearing a headdress! Clearly they are a upstanding, contributing member of the community.

Another good example would be a dysfunctional family dynamic. Focusing on perceived stereotypes outside of India is like a mother going after another kid for picking on her child after the child was beaten by his father, but not bothering to do anything about the abuse going on in the home.

0

@crazycatlandy

I could tell you exactly what you've said to us: Instead of complaining on the internet about how South Asians feel about how their culture was portrayed on South Korean TV, your time would be better spent trying to resolve the problems of "widespread addiction, domestic abuse, corruption, and subpar education on native reservations" prevalent in your country.

Again, I am not trying to sound aggressive. Just making a point. Will not comment on this topic anymore.

1

Yikes. Sorry for the typo - 'crazycatlady'

0

I have. And I also have the good sense not to try to make an issue out of every stereotype I see, because I know we have bigger fish to fry. Not to mention it makes us, as a demographic, look like petulant children who would rather sit around calling other people mean for using red skins as a team name than address the problems in our community.

0

And no worries about the typo or the aggressiveness. I tend towards the aggressive style of communication, too.

It's been my experience that this whole culture of white knighting and perpetual victimhood has done nothing but hurt the people who actually need help the most. It redirects attention and resources towards petty, inane nonsense. And the privilege it shows in the face of real poverty and desperation, while presenting itself as a savior, is maddening. I can pretty much guarantee that an acid attack survivor or a Dalit who has been lynched and relegated to his terrible social position cares that a South Korean romcom poked fun at spiritualism about as much as a Native American boy who is beaten by his abusive father every night cares about the name of a sports team. Which is to say not one iota.

0

None of these examples mean that a person should not try to reclaim their identity. Understood that a starving poor person might not care about this, but it does not mean that we do not try to make people writing about us know who we really are. Every society has a darker underbelly, but while we shouldn't ignore it, we shouldn't even focus on the darkness so much that we completely forget other aspects of the society. One thing I love about kdramas is how they communicate concepts like financial corruption in chabeol groups and show us the violent machinations that lie under the surface of some of the most hilarious scripts. But while they see themselves through various tinted glasses, the reason for all the anger is feeling that we were being viewed from a single tinted glass, which is not a true representation of a people...

0

Adiya- I spend a lot of time with abused women and children so maybe I'm just jaded. But this is an honest question: Why should it matter? Why would anyone allow their identity to hinge on another country's media? Why would your identity not hinge on yourself and your community instead? Mine does, which is why I make a point to address those before I even consider trying to control what other people think about me. Instead of complaining about drunken native stereotypes I try to help with efforts to reduce the rate of alcoholism. Instead of looking for reasons to feel indignant and offended when someone misunderstands or misuses a cultural artifact I focus on improving the quality of life for the people around me. Speaking out on behalf of your people and making this your big issue seems insanely disrespectful to the people who are truly desperate. If anything should be considered a blight on your identity it should be unchecked violence in your community, not a minor character in a television show produced in a different country and targeted towards a completely different dynamic.

The producers of this show aren't trying to create a representation of India. They made a ridiculous character of questionable heritage and religion to create a caricature of the reformed criminal trope.

0

@crazycatlady
I understand what you are trying to say. Had they be making fun of poverty in the subcontinent, or maybe terrorism or something, I might have reacted differently. The issue I'm having with all of this has more to do with the fact that the spiritual leaders of this region have been misrepresented, when theis is not what they would behave like. This idea has nothing to do with the numerous social evils that may persist in our societies. It has nothing to do with domestic abuse, but it is simply the way spirituality is viewed in our region. Misrepresentation of thisis not fair...

0

Not to sound like a really typical jaded old lady, but life isn't fair. No religion is ever truly represented in any drama because people are not going to tune in for a weekly theology lecture. It happens to every religion. Imagine how ridiculous it would sound had Catholics started having fits over the inaccuracies of a character that was actually supposed to be a postulate in You're Beautiful. She didn't go to mass or have a confessor because it's a drama, not because Korea secretly has it out for Catholics.

As it stands this character is very obviously a joke. The writers and producers aren't asserting that all religious leaders are phonies, they're mocking the well established trope of "bad guy finds religion and suddenly becomes a decent human being." And I honestly don't know how they could have been any more equal opportunity about it, unless they had hyphenated the name to include Jesus and Moses and maybe a few minor Norse and Shinto gods, and then created an acronym. Which would have been hilarious.

For all intents and purposes, your practical suggestion makes complete sense, which is why I referred to an Asian outlook. We do, as a people have an interest in creating mean labels and making fun of people, on their appearances and basic mannerisms. I have always found it offensive, and considering that South Korea has developed, I expect some element of sensitivity for them. Suggesting how they can improve their writing has not negative consequences for anyone. Just like we can't resolve all the social issues plaguing us in one day, I don't expect the Korean scriptwriters to magically stop reflecting what they see around them. I just want them to be aware of the negative repurcussions, since there's a huge fan base in South Asian. Pakistanis and Indians alike are unhappy with this episode

An Indian here too. I unlike you guys found the scene surprisingly funny. They had a Korean guy, wear a bindi , and act like a bhuddist monk, with a muslim name, giving a Christian style baptism and serve naan. There was nothing accurate about the entire sequence, which was hilarious to me. I don't think the intention was to offend or stereotype, but rather they played at India's rich cultural diversity. But the bit about Indian govt. exiling him, that was totally Tibet/China conflict and in no way linked to India! Still the scene though unneccessary, it was hilarious to me as an Indian viewer.

If you didnt get the naan joke... 난 (nan) = I
basically, what the monk said was
"do you know me / do you know naan?"
"in India, i eat / In India, we eat naan"
"i just eat / (we) just eat naan"

@Sobriety Thank You for the Naan explanation ! It's actually pretty sad that I didn't get it, as Korean language borrows a lot from a South Indian language(Tamil), of which I'm a native speaker, due to the influence of some settlers way back in time. The way they use nan in korean is the exact way they use it in Tamil too, yet I failed to get the joke.

Good to see a Tamil speaker here.. I am basically from Kerala but brought up in TN so quite fluent. And one of my friend told me that Korean and Tamil has many similar words. Like "appa", not exactly Amma but "omma" and many more maybe..

0

@FellowTamilSpeaker Hey Chingu! Glad to meet you here too. I believe that I'm also quite well versed in Malayalm if I say so myself ;).
There are many similarities between both the language which came as quite a surprise to me when I first started watching Korean shows! It adds that extra element of familiarity with the culture.

Other examples of the similarities are:
Sister In Law -Anni/Eonni
Snake- pambu/paem
Grandfather - Appuchi(old usage)/Abeoji
Surprised Expression - Aiyo/Aigu
Little Bit - Konjam Konjam/ Jogum Jogum
Day - Naal/ Nal
This - Ithu/ Igo
Happy Wathching! :D

The Viki subs I read said "do you know naan?" Which I took to be a reference to the famous Korean movie (or was it a commercial?) quote, "Do you know xxxx?" ... which I can neither recall specifically nor identify at this moment, auuugh! So this is a fairly useless comment unless someone can fill in what that real quote is and if it makes the reference any funnier.
At any rate, the whole gangster thing is beyond tired out for me and I wish they'd all get religion, go straight into a monastery and never be heard from again.

Yea. I'm a Muslim and i didn't find those scenes to be offensive. There's nothing in a name really; in my place there's a Catholic with the name Noor, and a Muslim that maintains his/her family name e.g. Lee.

I also found the naan pun funny. Haha. and I reallly loove naan especially cheese naan.

Please guys don't take those jokes seriously.

Thanks for the recap, @CandidClown!

Bong Soon's Strength

I am also curious to know how this will play out. While the Show hints that Jang-hyun now knows Bong Soon's "Achilles' Heel", I have to wonder "Does he really?" She said it was if she harmed an innocent. But, that isn't entirely true.

The different examples we've had is when the women in her lineage have MISUSED their powers for personal gain. I wonder if Jang-hyun will attempt to make her harm someone innocent, but realize her strength doesn't leave with just accidental touches. If that were the case, she would have lost her strength already from the different Ainsoft employees she has hurt, including the CEO.

Also, as @CandidClown said, the show is about Bong Soon EMBRACING her strength as her destiny. I think this is where my Second Lead Syndrome comes in, because I think Good Du and Bong Soon are similar in the fact that they are champions for justice, but in their respective capacities/jobs.

I would be curious to see the following:

[1] If Bong Soon does lose her powers, how. And if so, will she get it back, and how.

[2] I would really like resolution with the Mom abusing Dad issue. While I won't join everyone else who thinks the abuse was "done for laughs", given the premise of the Show "might FOR right" not "might MAKES right", this issue needs to be addressed.

I think the accidents with the employees are different as she did not want to hurt them and she was still holding back. Maybe the kidnapper will do something crazy and put someone else in his place (someone unrelated, not the other guy who is an accomplice anyway) and Bong Soon will mistake the person for the kidnapper and attack?

But that would mean it's a mistake, and not intentional? From what I understand, the powers will only be lost if one intentionally hurts an innocent.

I doubt there will be any resolution for Mom abusing Dad. That scene is just played out for laughs. Even the track played in the scene tells us so. Frankly, I don't see Dad asking for a divorce any soon. Maybe we will see him standing up for himself more often, but nothing more than that.

Agree with you! The way the scenes are played out seems to me that they're purely for comedy. Mum is just portrayed as the typical bully mom and Dad as the typical henpecked husband cliche that is often used for comedy. I'm honestly not extremely offended by their scenes (though I drew the the line at legit physical abuse) to the point that I need a proper resolution (aka divorce) because I think that would take up time from our main couple. I don't think they'll get a real proper resolution except for Dad standing up for himself.

AWw, really? I thought the scene with moms friends where the one lady told her her treatment of dad was unfair was a hint that the show would address her abuse. I was actually glad that her friends brought it up to her about how badly she treats her husband... but seeing the way she shut them down about it by saying that "he should have expected it when he married me" kind of shows to me that she really doesn't care. She feels self-entitled to his "devotion" to her and doesn't think twice about what her friends said. We'll hold out hope that she might repent, but I doubt there might be time/space to write it in!

I like the parallel you drew between GD and BS. GD has always been portrayed as the charcter is always inclined to do the right thing. He does not care for his job security/relationships, etc. His sense of Duty and Justice is what powers him and makes him act like a bulldozer at times. Maybe that is the point of having a character like GD in this Show. Maybe it was GD who has inspired BS to defend the weak just like he has inspired all those unmotived cops around him to also 'do the right thing'.
Also, those 2 points you highlighted, what if they both are integrated? I would love it, if the Show depicts BS loosing her power accidentally but then regaining them again because of her sense of Justice. What a metaphorical slap it would be to Mom when she realises that since she has bullied people around her all the while, she could never get the second chance with her strength that BS would get.
Am I thinking too ahead ? Yes. Do I think that the bullying is played out for joke? No way.
The show has emphasised that bullying is wrong and addressed it again and again.
•One with mom being the bully but loosing her powers because of it.
•With MH being bullied by his brothers, but poetic justice in the form of the victim coming out of it stronger
•BS saving a kid in the alleyway which eventually lead to the Gang becoming better and reformed(atleast with the neighbourhood clean-up drive).
•Also BS does not take office bullying by the TL and puts him in his place. Senior or not, qualified or not, employees 'should not' be bullied. Atleast that is the moral standards that we aspire to reach, as an evolving progressive society. Hence, ODP rather deserved the treatment he got from BS.
In that vein, i sure hope that Mom's bullying is not overlooked and justice of some form or even repentance from her side is depicted.

I can't remember the last time I liked an actor as much as Park Hyung-shik. He has a kaleidoscope of facial expressions that are like riding a roller coaster.

It's also nice to see the behind the scenes videos that show that Park Hyung-shik and Park Bo-young have a great chemistry off screen too. He just stares and stares at her like Min-hyuk would stare at Bing-Soon.

I remember him from Heirs, where he didn't necessarily stand out (Kim Woo-bin took the spotlight in that shit show). But I was instantly interested when I saw him in the train wreck called High Society. He was the best thing about that show. And I am plodding through Hwarang, only to see him.

I did not watch Heirs either. But i skimmed through most of recaps and thought park shin-ye was very stupid, wanting to fit in such a stupid and superficial society...

LMH was not even smart.

And i hated Woo-bin to the bits. Didnt believe in the bully reformation. LOL

sorry for those that might have liked that show.

WHTMF is What Happened to My Family. It's the only 50s episodes drama that I watched untill the end.

Maybe, when I am free again, i will want to watch WHTMF only because our lovely Min Min is there...

Oh, and by the way... I don´t know who commented that Park Hyung-sik was the best High Society had... She was right.
But the Girl they gave him and the Story they had... i feel it did not make him justice. That Girl was not even pretty and she was also easy...

At least PBY is very pretty and her Character is not easy. She may be not that smart, and she lacks ethic at work, but she is not easy...

Now I have to Keep on working on my Thesis!!!

ok, I'm going to be Debbie Downer and say that this episode wasn't great for me.

Let me qualify that by saying The Kiss was awesome, and everything that candidclown said and more... and the moment where i truly let it all go and SQUEEED because it was a wonderful original, gosh darn PERFECT way to declare his love. (I wish my husband had proposed this way! but i digress)

But

I felt this episode our OTP had too many forcedly cute moments. like they were trying TOO HARD to show they were cute. Like the exaggerated smsing of cute nicknames and Min Hyuk's mooning over Bong Soon with glowing light and sound effects. I don't need them to rub the cute in my face, i like to bask in it and squee from afar.

Also, the workplace shenanigans plus skiving from work just because he's the boss and he can? not cool. Plus not focusing on work with Bong Soon even when she is? Did not like his lack of respect for her as an employee and not just his current object of infatuation.

And lastly, I found it very very hard to squee properly when they had the kidnapping of Bong Soon's best friend hanging over our heads the whole episode . I kept wondering when Bong Soon would find out and the other shoe would drop so I just couldn't get into the moment much... thankfully the kiss scene was great enough to solve this bit but still I wish it had be done differently.

Oh and Writer Nim? Please less pointless (stupid) gangster scenes ok? I can't decide why you are trying to mix rom com with thriller and then shove in zany slapstick as well. Not working out very well at the moment. we only have a few episodes left!

Some angst should be good to inject fresh emotions to a very stale moving storyline right now

Yes. The writer is the problem now- I feel like the writing has gotten shoddy- she is just making her characters do things for plot points-

How to let evil guy known bong soon's weakness? Let's have Bong Soon randomly text about it!

How to let Min Hyuk find Bong Soon if she runs off due to a disagreement and runs into trouble- lets bug her necklace! (Plus this makes Min Hyuk into a invasive semi stalker which I dislike cuz I like Min Hyuk so much!)

How to force some slap stick humor in? Let make the kid gangsters chase the older gangsters and then randomly have some religious leader do silly things with them!

How to end the episode on a cliffhanger again? Why let's drag the reveal of the kidnapping to Bong Soon till the very end even though it happened as the last episode's cliffhanger.

I hope the writing improves next week really. I need a good ending!

0

You are spot on. The writer is getting lazier and lazier with her writing. It wasn't that obvious in the initial few episodes, but as the drama goes on, it becomes more and more obvious. The chemistry between the OTP is the only saving grace of this drama.

0

Required fields are marked *

The writing has been shoddy for a good chunk of the drama, which is really coasting only on the chemistry of the leads.

And I agree on your points. That bit of invasion of privacy isn't good. And I've not particularly liked how Min-hyuk is ditching work just for some lovin' time. I mean, I totally understand - he's in a new relationship and he wants couple time. But there's a place and time for that. Previously, I could accept that even if he wasn't working physically in the office 9-5, when he did work he gave it his best shot and that's why he could build up Ainsoft to be what it is today. Now it's just like work is an afterthought many distant moons away, like how the typical K-drama female lead loses her personality and the kitchen sink when she falls in love (or is this another role reversal that didn't quite work?). I'd have expected him to show a bit more commitment since it's his own company, his girlfriend is there, he's making games about her, etc etc. If Bong-soon is already a terrible employee, Min-hyuk should as her boss and now her boyfriend set a good example for her. Or am I just expecting too much of him?

As for Boss Tak and his minions... why can't the Bride Collector just kidnap them instead? He'd get all seven in one fell swoop!

I never liked the a-girl-gets-a-job-because-her-boss-likes-her-and-they-date-at-work idea but now I am ok with that because without this we probably wouldn't get any screen time of MH and BS. The writer is quite incompetent and she has not been innovative at all. There are quite a few cliche moments in this show, for example, the seat belt fastening scene. And every time the writer wants to move the plot forward she just injects some emotional moments no matter how illogical it will be. As an example, BS beat up about 30 gangsters alone without getting a punch but we need some catalyst for our OTP here so let MH get stabbed. Our heroine is not feeling for the hero yet so let her see the lonely side of him by giving an out-of-nowhere family fight at the hospital. Therefore, I don't want to blame the characters for nepotism too much. I think it happens because the writer needs an excuse to have the main characters spend some time together just like she let Mom beat Dad so that Mom would disappear shortly and BS could fall into the trap. I doubt the show will later address the domestic abuse issue because I am not sure if the writer is even aware of the underlying meaning of those violent actions unless the audience point it out. Even BS is abusing her powers sometimes but we have never seen her getting punished for that.

0

@giantess,
That last point about Bong-soon abusing her powers... yeah, it seems the rules are just bendy for her and I haven't particularly liked her doing that in the office context. She isn't abusing it like Mom did, but something about how she goes about it while at work doesn't sit well with me.

I have no issue with cliche moments and some fan service if they're done well and integrated properly into the story and characterisation. But that doesn't seem to be the case in the recent episodes.

0

LOL Junny yes the kidnapper should just take the Gangsters and be done with it! haha.

I am so frustrated that the magic that is Bong Soon and Min Hyuk's chemistry is being undermined by the crappy writing, which is making us start to dislike the characters. URGH.

Like you, I had mixed emotions about this episode too. I dont feel the OTP moments are forced, but I did find myself being a bit put off by the workplace shenanigans. Min-hyuk is very sweet and OMG yes, if I was Bong-soon, I won't be able to keep my eyes (and hands) off him, but I think he needs to be a bit more professional in public places at work. There were several times I felt uncomfortable for Bong-soon. Of course I am projecting my own sensibilities into this scenario and others might have a very different reaction to it.

The second issues was because we knew Kyung-shim was kidnapped, it kept us in a place of edge and took the punch out of the romance. Would have been better if we found out with Bong-soon that Kyung-shim had been taken by creepo.

Third, I was a bit miffed at the cultural insensitivity with the fake monk. Not to mention, it wasn't even something that was really needed in the story. It didnt add much to the episode and ended up upsetting folks. I understand the issues with homogenous societies and their exposure to other cultures, but hopefully discussing these issues is what brings more awareness. We still can't even get stuff like this right in highly mixed / immigrant rich countries like the USA, so I guess I tend to give Korea a bit of a pass.

I was originally a little miffed that MH was using work time to bring BS on a seaside date and all (she was so seriously discussing her walnut bat, and MH was just there mooning over her)... but after all my rants on how BS isn't exactly a great employee, and all the discussions on how MH is keeping her around as a pet...

I've given up and decided to just think that this is dramaland and most times, logic doesn't make sense in this world, especially not when their work relationship is far from conventional, LOL. I mean, they're too cute for me to get annoyed with them. Annoyed with the scriptwriter, maybe, but I'll take the cute scenes whenever I can.

*delurks*

This is the worst episode of the series for me, for the following reasons:

1. The sheer stupidity of the Gyeong-shim's kidnapping. Why on earth would she be out and about alone at night after what happened to her? But hey, it moved the plot forward!

2. The clunky weakness reveal. Like, wtf why is Bong-soon oversharing on the phone? I get that she had no reason to suspect she wasn't talking to her best friend, but it was just so shoddily written.

3. The nepotism. I wish I could get over it, but it's hampering my enjoyment of the OTP. I wish I could enjoy the kiss scene more, but all I could think of at that moment was that Bong-soon could frolic in the beach during work hours because her boss is her boyfriend. It just seems so unprofessional and irresponsible to me. I really hope he didn't place a tracker in that necklace, or he'll tell Bong-soon about it and not trick her into accepting it.

I'm especially annoyed because the iffy writing is negating my love for the OTP. I was excited when I saw the kiss scene stills last week. I still think the OTP scenes are cute and adorable, but only when viewed out of context. It doesn't help that both leads haven't had much character development over the course of 12 episodes.

4. The gangster subplot. It's so jarring and disconnected from the rest of the show right now.

5. The pacing is just over the place this episode. It took the kidnapper most of the episode before making a threat. The gangster subplot took away time that could have been spent developing the leads.

I blame the writer. I'm so annoyed that Park Bo-young and Park Hyung-shik's likability and chemistry is being sapped away by problematic writing. I will never watch any of this writer's shows again.

I didn't think the romantic moments were forced, I do think the actors are amazing because they are definitely working with no plot, or almost, but still manage to do something good out of it... The writer is counting a bit too much on their leads' talents and chemistry. Some scenes felt like an advertisement more than a drama. Also I agree with you for the gangsters, their use screams laziness to me! If he told her about it I doubt she would refuse it, but I think there needs to be that transparency in their relationship.

I think the necklace is more useful to MH because it can help to track her down, given her propensity for reckless behavior. After all, MH is worried that BS will run off to track down the kidnapper by herself, so the tracker in the necklace will inform him of her whereabouts at all times, and if need be, he can rescue her in some way or another.

Agree because i think MH already accepted it that no matter what he does be it hiring her in his company or bring her somewhere in the end BS will still do what she wants.

I'd feel better if it's a tracking device. The kidnapper supplied drugs to his accomplice. Who knows he might incapacitate DBS with drugs or something...

Required fields are marked *

I was thinking the same. He seems to go to the pharmacy quite often anyway lol.
That would be one of the only ways to get his hands on DBS.
I think MH will tell DBS about the necklace tracking device. Why would he not do so. She is ok to have the police one. Plus the kidnapper told her not to call the police but I assume MH will share the info with GD and use the necklace to keep track on DBS during her rescue mission.

One thing though...I think MH will have to save her somehow. It will be like payback for her saving him countless times (bus accident, loneliness, etc)

The perp mentions once that his head always hurts? I can't remember what problems he has that warrants the pharmacy, but it's no longer alluded to in the later episodes.

I hope it's a tracking device but one in a necklace can so easily be lost, if I were MH (frankly, if I were BS herself) I'd prefer having a microchip inserted! I'm serious. The kidnapper has already drugged victims and has supplies of syringes and meds so we know that's coming. BS is irrational and impulsive - btw, what was she doing in the junk yard, anyway, I thought GD specifically did NOT tell her where the kidnapper was? That seemed pretty random.

By the way, yes. How on earth did she arrive there? She didnt know that place.

Sloppy writing. Very bad writing. :(

I really hope the rescue mission will at least make sense.

0

Yes, how did BS know where to search for the perp? The writing and directing is so bad we don't even know whether KS is going to Busan or returning to BS's home.

0

I'm 99% sure that that IS a tracking device, and I don't blame Min Hyuk for doing that. I am glad that he is protective of her knowing how dangerous the situation is and how impulsive and emotional she can be.

+1 I'm surprised at the reaction to this simple thing, given the context. It is a drama about a girl with a propensity to get into difficult and dangerous situations being targeted by a serial kidnapper and the guy who loves her takes a measure to protect her. Nothing nefarious here.

Perhaps he will. We haven't seen him give it to her yet, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he told her when he gave it to her. He tends to be pretty open and honest.

0

I don't have a problem with a tracking device as much as I have a problem with her not knowing about it. A necklace is supposed to be a gift to another person to show how much you care about them, and I just don't think "hiding" a tracking device in a necklace is right. Although I'm pretty sure its for the right reasons, if I were in DBS's situation, I honestly wouldn't be pleased at having a tracking device on me everywhere I go.

As long as he openly tells her, I'm fine.

YEESH. This show gives me emotional whiplash. I barely have enough time to enjoy the romance before gasping over what the killer is doing. All the while Min Hyuk and Bong Soon were being cute, I was like yes, very cute and all, but Kyung-Shim-ah!! RESCUE HER. My heart was a mess by the end of the episode when Bong Soon realized that something was not right. And seeing her breakdown over that horrible video just about drove a stake through my heart. The worst thing in the world is to see a dearly beloved friend in trouble. :(

A flustered Min Hyuk is the best. I love that he and Bong Soon don't need so many words to understand each other. Communication through the eyes is the best! Their beach kiss was as romantic as all get out!

When Boss Taek's ringtone began playing Tunak Tunak Tun, I was so delighted! But when our monk Nizamuddin came on the scene, I was completely befuddled! Sure I laughed and all, but I was a little puzzled as well. A fellow named Nizamuddin wouldn't be wearing saffron robes in a Buddhist temple under most circumstances, just saying. I loved the way he sprinkled 'holy water' on everyone though. This monk obviously has a lot of shade to throw! :D

I know Gook Do hasn't been having the best time lately, what with missed timings all over the place and knowing that his former girl is dating one of his friends and all, but he is very lucky in that he has a supportive team and a supportive captain. And how cool was it that they all defied the main chief's orders and left the building.

On a final note, I am really worried for Kyung-shim. I do not want her to die! She's the sassy, comforting, best friend that Bong Soon needs and I need her to be alive, PLEASE.

The killer is a whole another level of sick. Starving the ladies and wanting to marry them. Blergh. He kind of reminds me of Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs in a way, with the starving and all! The actor is doing a great job of making the killer absolutely loathsome. Something about his face is just so unnerving!

Poor Gyeon-shim, she went missing for two whole days without anyone noticing. She went through a lot of grief because of that rotten individual. FIGHTING hon.
And I can't even begin to describe the incompetence of those police men. How many times have they been to that junk yard and overlooked the entrance of the liar that is right there?! UGH

It's a sure thing that this show doesn't know how to balance things up. Either the heart stops beating at the sight of BS&MH acting deadly cute or from the scares of the psycho.

Wow. Just wow! These 2 are killing me with so much cuteness!!!!

Bong Soon could be the 6th bride but only if she looses her strength, otherwise she would be the enemy of the kidnapper. He knows her secret so I am wondering if he will try to plan something so that she accidentally hurts someone.

Min Min's dream could be a premonition about that?
I was also wondering about the preview bit where we see him hugging Bong Soon in desperation (hope she will be fine and that is just another nightmare caused by his anguish and desperation to protect her).

I think Hee Ji is still in line to be a bride...but Bong Soon sidetracked him from it.

- I don't find the gangsters scenes funny at all, so I wish either we didn't need that many anymore, or the Show could have made them help BS rescue the missing women/protect the neighborhood instead.
- the Michael Jackson move was funny the first time but overused in this episode.
- despite how much in love he is, MH needs to let BS work outside of his own office (even if it's not within the actual gaming development team), let her work on her project ( why is he upgrading her character himself?), and not let her skip work just because he wants some alone time with her.
- what's up with MH missing BS and his sad face when dropping BS off? Looks like we are going to enter the angsty cycle of the show. I am NOT looking forward to it. Hope it will be a short one.

0

Haha laughing at YY almost losing her hair!
So, they've opened this investigation to the entire PD, right? And no one has thought to do a property history that shows that a multi-level underground jail has existed on the site? Or are we supposed to believe that the kidnapper casually constructed that beneath his junkyard? Because it looks so spanking new. The case is not technically in their hands, so they can't do much. They risk suspension if they do.

0

@s9313071e
Yeah I just find it pretty ironic that it just took GD to pull a ragefest and quit to make all of them realize that they should be doing something. I mean, the writer did make them spend almost 10 episodes just being unable to solve a single thing and then now with only a few episodes left they're scrambling around doing things even if they risk suspension? Meh. I just feel like the writing hasn't been the best regarding the police!

0

Actually what I felt most frustrating was the how inept the police were portrayed to be. None of their strategies worked and if GD were smarter, wouldn't it be great to keep the camera in the police station to feed the villain some false info to mislead him while they swoop onto him?? But then again... these are the same guys who has been grunting and eyeballing the villain since ep 8 ?

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Sigh, the police...

Though honestly what in the world was GS doing walking around at night with headphones, alone? Is it even logical given that BS kept reminding her the criminal was still at large? Or was it just a way to move the plot forward and get the kidnapper to grab her? I might have been more impressed if he had gone all the way to Busan to do it, but I guess that might have been too much effort for him, huh?

0

Required fields are marked *

I see it as a case of lazy writing. The writer wants a showdown between BS and the kidnapper, but can't find another way to do it unless KS gets kidnapped. I hate the manner in which KS gets kidnapped. It is mighty foolish and illogical for a previously attacked person to ignore multiple warnings and the fact that the perp has not been caught.

Just like others, I like the build up that lead to the kiss in the beach. But as the camera spanned out then zoomed in close and of different angle I kept telling him; 'Come PHS, I know you can kiss better.'

I still recall how he kissed NJH in WHWMF few years ago. And both played innocent, pure, first timer in romance too that time. And he kissed so well there, so satisfying. *sigh*

I do hope the second, third and so on kiss would be way better. More like the way adult kiss. Like PBS did with JJS in OMG.

I didn't watch High Society but recall from Beanie OT and other comments that PHS's hair appeared to take on equal importance with the lead characters. That seemed perfectly logical to me.

0

Apparently PD-nim wanted another take at the kissing scene but because it was freezing (and they already did another round of sand drawing on the dry part of the beach which totally didn't work), PHS and PBY called it quits!

Dear Show,

I don't want to lose you, but unlike Min Hyuk and Bong Soon, you're not taking those steps forward towards me, and my grip is slowly and painfully slipping away from you.

I wanted to be happy being with you, for your cute scenes and longing stares, but I don't quite feel the emotional attachments to you, not when you kept on giving me whiplash moments of alternating feelings of being in romantic comedy, slapstic (but oh-not-funny) comedy and horror movie. I could not fully enjoy the romantic scenes without the back of my head worrying on the sadistic/ horror parts, especially so in this episode. It leaves me.. SO confused, and dear Show, being confused is not good in any relationship. And stop shoving me with unnecessary over-the-top culture-sensitive scenes that did not contribute to the plot at all. And as much as I love Min Hyuk and Bong Soon together, I'm frustrated that I can't get fully on board with their relationship. Because you don't let me, Show!

I'm tired, Show, as I kept on skipping parts, and roll my eyes on some others, and I don't like that. I want to be fully committed in this relationship. To be fully in love when the characters are in love. What holds me now is only Min Hyuk's longing stares but I don't think it will last long.

Maybe it's just me, But maybe, it's both of us. We just lost that sizzles. I'm still staying as we've been together this far, but I don't know what's left of this relationship. I just hope when we had our last kiss and break up later, you won't leave any bitter taste in my mouth.

Regards,
Your soon-to-be ex.

I must admit that this is the first episode where I skipped scenes (though I did livestream it, as with every other episode) while watching the subbed version. And for any other drama, if I skip scenes, I know that I'll drop it sooner or later. The show can't continue leveraging on the chemistry between the main leads to keep viewers interested! A good pairing does not make a good show. The last thing you would want would be for the audience to only tune into the cute couple moments and completely loss interest in the other subplots that are supposed to add depth to the show and shape the characters. (And that's what's happening to me now).

I love Episode 12 but the thugs scene didn't really work for me here except for the "cleansing" part because gaaah I laugh out loud on that one.
Hyung Sik's acting is getting better and better. No wonder during one interview, PBY said he is An Min Hyuk. She only see him as An Min Hyuk.
I love the kisses. So gentle - fitting for a first kiss. Love the forehead kiss as well. Did he see hesitation from her? Is that why he kissed her on the forehead instead? I didn't think that, but yeah, maybe :)
I hope BS will not lose her power though. I hope her mom will get her powers back instead. I also hope she will read those books (yeah, you know Grimm just ended..) and that the power of their family will help her save the girls.

Man.. I've been waiting for this recap to come out so I can put something down in writing so I can move on.

Let me confess that I haven't even finished all of Episode 12... I couldn't finish it. I think I'll wait for all the episodes to come out, and skip around.

For the past few episodes, I've noticed the editing/story telling has been a bit screwy. I love the sweet/cute moments between Bong Soon and Min Hyuk, but felt there were way too many filler scenes that felt random and oddly placed. Like ... do we really need to check in constantly on the gangsters who have been stuck in the hospital since episode 1? Do we need the office doppleganger? Do we need to check back in on the HS students so often? Is the neighborhood development actually going to play a part in the storyline? Just feels like we spend so many precious time on these side stories, but they're not really going anywhere. All those storylines have been static since their introduction. I can only hope that all that extra info and scenes will come back at the end with a ribbon and a bow.

THEN, the beginning of Episode 12 reaaaaally made it apparent to me that actor chemistry can only take me so far.

How can you even start off an episode with this gruesome kidnap of Gyung Shim, and then expect the viewers to file that in the back of our heads and be happy about all the cuteness, and react favorably to the slapstick humor of the gangsters? I was screaming at the screen "I DON'T CARE!!! TELL ME WHEN BONG SOON IS GOING TO FIND OUT ABOUT HER FRIEND!!!" And then what's more, Bong Soon have this weird conversation with her friend revealing her weakness. They're best friends, I'm sure this conversation had been had millions of times. I was tolerating the cop dumbness, but this made me snap. Maybe it was the writing? Maybe it was the wording of her text? It just felt so convenient and gratuitous. How many times does it take for the kidnapper to confront the cops RIGHT OUTSIDE his junkyard for the cops to realize "oh, he must have surveillance somewhere, if not at the station, he probably has surveillance RIGHT OUTSIDE HIS PROPERTY. So maybe, don't do the stake out here."

And then the whole work place situation, nepotism, etc. I read through the comments from Ep 11, so, ditto those "really? she's not even qualified! Need to suspend all belief." comments.

Alright, got my 2 cents out. I feel better. I still enjoyed the show, and will definitely be finishing it.

+100!!

I like to think that the doppelganger MIGHT be used to show that in the end, he grudgingly accepts and respects BS's capabilities (their relationship seems to be getting "better"), but then again, he might have just been included in for comedy and laughs.

Let's not mention how the cops stake him out in full view, broad daylight, in a big car right outside his junkyard. And also how KS somehow thinks it's safe to walk around at night alone with earphones (how is it that she's not been traumatized the slightest bit by her attack?). How could BS not have noticed something was weird from the moment "KS" told her she was jealous of her strength?

Oh man, E10/11 was a huge rampage of comments about how her work-attitude sucks and favouritism, etc, that I'm glad there's at least some work being done now? Clearly she's not going to be the star player of the strategy team, but at least she's showing some work. (Though tsk MH and his distractions that are taking her away from her work, lol!)

I am losing interest in the drama. To say the truth I fast forwarded and only watched the scenes that had Park Hyung Sik in it, haha!! But there were also a couple of moments where the forced cutesy made me cringe. Min Hyuk was lovely from the start, why do they force him to be that exaggerated? Feels unnatural. I preferred him at the beginning, when he was excited by the sexiness of an aggressive Bong Soon, I was expecting that they would make fun and create romantic tension from this situation where she is stronger than him (they did so well with the training scenes...), but now he taps her head and squees?? I liked him more being a combination of cheeky and cute, but now the balance is broken. If they ruin Min Hyuk for me, I will not forgive this writer. They are not doing Park Bo Young any favors either. And I will not enter to discuss the rest of the plot and the not so funny jokes. So sad because they are great actors and it is such a waste.
And to end with a positive note, the kiss was lovely. I would like to find love with a man that is so sincere with his feelings and so respectful :)

I totally get what you mean. I really like Min-hyuk, so I'm sad at the recent "developments" in his character. I don't begrudge cute couple time, but I don't want him to lose that x-factor that made him Min-hyuk.

This is exactly how I felt after ep 12! The only reason I am still watching this show is our cute OTP. I don't find DBS very likable as a character because she could be very reckless and thoughtless sometimes and PBY herself is the saving grace of this badly written character thanks to her cuteness. I like BS simply because MH likes her but after ep 11 and ep 12 MH becomes a little childish. The last thing I want from this show is an irrational and silly MH so please please writer-nim, don't drop his intelligence level just to be on a par with the rest of the group (almost everyone in this drama is brainless except the culprit).

AMH falling so hard and fast for DBS may be partly because he grew up being so emotionally-deprived so DBS staying with and cooking for him means so much to him, conveniently overlooking that she did it as part of her job and being guilt-tripped at times.

I'd still likely stay on to the end particularly during this verrrryyy dry spell in kdrama land.

Looking forward to the April and May lineups!

Agree, I felt he was overacting some scenes and cringed.. they are relying too much on the main couples chemistry bc the other subplots are just a mess and at least in this episode, except for the kiss (which was beautiful) they over did it.
The actress is doing a very good job at saving BS character right now. Please let MH continue to be awesome, dont ruin his character!

Yes! I swear I felt his discomfort, not always but just a couple of moments, when he was tapping her head for example. He could have just caressed her hair, something more subtle and delicate...in my view, that scene was too much. But whatever, I just want Min Hyuk back to her natural self. :)

As much as I enjoy the romance(without the context of GS being kidnapped and most of it happened at the office/during working hours) in this episode, I do agree with you and feel that Min Hyuk is going back and forth between being exaggerated and his swoony self. Lets just hope that it's just his raging hormones making him childish and irrational. And once he gets some from Bong Soon the exaggeration will die down. But he is super extra and a drama queen at all times so....

I need to count how many hopes and prayers that I had made for this drama because its so disappointing but strangely addicting at the same time. Blame it on the leads, their cute romance, and some witty one liners from the writer.

All the OTP scenes were lovelyas usual. But this was really the first time, that all scenes with the gangster annoyed me and I didn't see the point. Is there anything left that's connected to the main story? Even if not, there is nothing interesting about it.

And what really bugged me, they tracked her smart watch. But what about her smartphone? The kidnapper still had it and was using it, why not track the phone?

BS asked to track the smart watch. I suppose if nobody tells them to track the smartphone, no one will track it. Funny, how GD manages to get someone to track BS's smartphone when she goes for her showdown with the gangsters, but they forget all about it when it comes to KS.

Only reading the recaps as of now , i do know tibeto-indian Buddhist monks based in Korea ( my friend's uncle), who have Mongoloid features ( similar looking to Korean physiognomy but Very similar food style to mainstream Indians, talking about uttrakhand based Tibeto-indians who have Indian citizen ship) so maybe the writers have used a tibetan name, i can't say about the male monk putting on a bindi and also can't say much about how the Buddhist's practises.
Mongoloid Hindu-indian at this end ( culturally brought up as a Hindu but with a Christian name ).

I am disappointed with the recent episodes of this drama and i am losing interest in watching this show.

To put it simply its a MESS! So many unnecessary things going on as subplots just to drag this drama. I am such a huge fan of PHS and PBY and i love their chemistry so much, but this drama;s romance does not make me feel that much connected as i expected i would. Its a bit bland.

I started watching this drama for some fluffy romantic comedy like WFKBJ , but i ended up getting a low quality version of 'THE VOICE'. I dont mind the crime thriller injected in to this show, but the editing and the story telling is so off, one part of the show feels like i am watching a total crime thriller and the next one is like a totally different show. Where is the connection?

I am really disliking and fed up with that high school gang and the hospital gang , plus the incompetency of the police team, The once comedic relief provided by these gangs are pure torture now. I am asking this question, is it really necessary? Does it add any kind of value to the story, to the development of the characters? All i see as of now a hindrance to a show which has so much potential.

My thoughts exactly! They were not that funny to begin with and I didn't really understand the inclusion of the characters (especially the high schoolers, since Baek Tak's gang was used for her warehouse-showdown-MH-gets-injured plotline). Why was any of it still necessary this episode, when we have KS's kidnap hanging over our heads?

I keep seeing folks complaining about the "nepotism" in the show. you do know that nepotism is when a person gives their family members jobs only because they are related. Do Bong Soon is in no way related to Ahn Min Hyuk no matter how attracted to her he might be. I don't think the fact that he was attracted was the only reason he hired her in the first place, and I don't believe it is the only reason he has kept her on.

I think favouritism might be a better word, which ironically was something Min-hyuk tried to prevent by not parachuting her into the Strategy Department. And I can understand how it will look bad to employees who don't know the situation behind his arrangement with Bong-soon (Dong-pyung's reaction, for example). More than that, I think folks are just not too pleased with the lack of professionalism on display, especially coming from the CEO. Regardless of the reasons he kept her on, and no matter how casual the company's working environment is, he should rein her in instead of indulging her (and by extension, himself).

I, too, have a few bones to pick with the writer, but I wasn't upset by the scene with the monk-- I think they intentionally used a mishmash of elements from different traditions to emphasize that the monk is a phony. IMO, they were trying to make it obvious that he's a fraud by making everything about him inauthentic... to the point of being ridiculous. I felt that rather than mocking monks, Show was mocking charlatans who pretend to be holy/enlightened/etc.-- and the people who fall for their bull (including gangsters and some would say, ex-Presidents). The monk didn't so much baptize as chastise-- the fact that he called each of the gangsters "sekki" (akin to "bastard") is further evidence that we weren't supposed to take him seriously as a monk. (However, I suspect that Fake Monk will have a positive influence on the bad boys nonetheless.)

It might just be me - but I'm not getting a full feeling from Bong Soo's investment into loving Minhyuk yet. There's something still held back in her and I'm thinking of all the drama-land tropes when a heroine always returns to her first love. I can't imagine the drama is going that way - NOT with basically the entire fandom loving Park Min Suk in this role and their totally adorable BTS segments that really show true affection between the two of them....it's just that...it feels like a good chunk of her heart is still with Guk Do and can get yanked back to him in a moment. I also didn't like the tracking device Minhyuk put into her necklace. Something felt off about it. *sigh* It's just probably me!

I initially loved how the drama combined so many genres together, especially with the idea of horror and romcom which I thought was incredibly unique. The problem now is that there are lots of weird transitions in the drama [in my opinion, the most problematic is the slapstick humour - although it might also be the fact that we're seeing it from an international perspective, because this type of comedy may be extremely popular amongst the Korean audience.] I'm finding that some of the cuts between scenes are quite jarring and don't transition smoothly, and thus end up taking away the enjoyment of the drama as well as the suspense and tension of the actual horror plotline itself. I am going to admit, however, that even though there's filler I'm glad that it happened during these episodes - I'd rather the filler be now than for the drama to conclude in filler, which is more often than not what tends to happen when dramas begin to get "stale" during the latter stretch.

My main problem as well is that the strength of our kidnapper[s] is waning in terms of characterization and purpose. I still genuinely feel that our kidnapper is incredibly creepy and scary, but he really could have been so much more memorable if he'd had an actual backstory or some relation to Minhyuk or Bong Soon himself. I'm thinking of something like I Can Hear Your Voice, where the killer actually sought revenge against our leads, making the grudge not only purposeful but also so that we were directly pulled into the kidnapper's story and could see him grow as a villain in tandem with our main leads. It would have been much more interesting then, except now we have one serial killer and his submissive - and because we know nothing about them and only see them as "the killers that Bong Soon needs to take down," it makes them much less interesting and more like a plot device than an actual character in itself.

And lastly, about the [seemingly arbitrary] gangsters scene - I thought that it was meant to show how now that the [high school] gangsters and [always in hospitals] gangsters have met, it gives them a reason to cooperate together so that they will serve some kind of purpose in the event that Bong Soon gets into trouble in the future.

Ugh like everybody else, I feel the same. The funny Baek Tak gang and high school kids inserts are not working anymore for me as it feels so jarring and pointless especially in this heavier episode setting. It also cut the romance time between the leads like why they have so many screen time? Why does the leads look like they're secondary characters? Why put the seaside date in a montage while needlessly dragging the whole temple scenes? Why not use the time for character development? I know that this drama is half pre-produced but I think it's not too late for the editing team to edit out the filler scenes for the next episodes as they don't bring anything to the drama if removed. Episode 12 is the first time that I read negative comments from the Korean audience/K-netz, all pointing out to the unnecessary Baek Tak gang shenanigans.
