Sooyoung confirms MBC weekend drama Man Who Sets the Table

The upcoming MBC weekender Man Who Sets the Table will be headlined by singer-idol-actress Sooyoung (Police Unit 38). I thought that her schedule would be full because of SNSD promotions and Polyclinic Doctor, but it looks like the latter is still having trouble finding a broadcasting station. Sooyoung initially was confirmed to star in the youth medical drama, but production and filming doesn’t seem to have started, and no other casting announcements have been made. So maybe that’ll be put on hold for the future while she films Man Who Sets the Table.

This new weekend drama will be created by a team that has had extensive long-format drama experience. The writer, Park Hyun-joo, created the script for Hooray for Love, Wonderful Mama, and Queen’s Flower, while PD Joo Sung-woo directed Hundred Year Inheritance, Monster, and Legendary Witch. It’s a testament to my love for weekenders that I actually have seen all the aforementioned makjang-style dramas, but only Wonderful Mama managed to keep my interest until the end.

No plot details regarding Man Who Sets the Table have been released, but judging from just the title, I’m guessing it’ll be something about a house-husband or a domestically inclined man, which does set us up for some interesting issues on gender role reversals. Most of Sooyoung’s characters in the past have been plucky earnest heroines (Police Unit 38, Cyrano Agency) and she naturally gives off such a feminine air that I’m curious if we’ll be seeing her in a less traditional or career woman-type role.

Man Who Sets the Table is slated to air after You’re Too Much starting in September.

Still waiting for her to get a real breakthrough role. She's by far the most talented actress in her group and she deserves more!

I like her, she's an idol-actor who can actually act, hope this does well for her.

Ooooh, hopefully she can have more of a chance to show off her acting chops. I see other SNSD girls, who are far less talented actors, get roles and I'm always thinking, "But what about Sooyoung!?"

I like Sooyoung so congratulations to her! I just find it sad when I come across knetz' less gracious comments about her and her acting skills. I think she's pretty and a decent actress. Fighting!

MBC really want to ruin weekend timeslots when casting idol with poor acting as lead.
Sooyoung not so bad but her acting really boring.

Hopefully it'll be a interesting drama, by far i actually like her act in 38 Squad the most, but i see that she didn't get character development after ep 8. Anyway, i'll looking forward it

Love Sooyoung - I hope she gets to work with a meaty material this time! I also hope she shines in acting this year. If it is a weekend drama, it means there will be a lot of other cast members, right? Let's hope this will be one of those that has well-balanced plot and not those that just uses their idol-actors for publicity and nothing much else.

I am so freakin' happy right know ! She is also casted for a 2 episodes special drama on JTBC so I really hope 2017 is gonna be the year for her acting career ?.
Seriously, after her disappointing role in 38 Police Squad and the unknown fate of Polyclinic Doctor, I was really worried but damn, I don't even care anymore XD. I still want to see Sooyoung as a doctor tho so fingers crossed for PD not being cancelled ...
Anyway, I gotta say that it is upsetting that every time she is casted for a role, she gets hate. For her looks, for being a SM idol ... etc
I know she is going to rock so I seriously can't wait ?.
