I'm in drama slump aside from Rebel (and secretly, My Secret Romance). I'm thinking about continuing with Chicago Typewriter (seen ep 2) but the male lead has a horrible personality and it's not redeemed by good looks because his haircut is the ugliest! Does he get more likeable soon, Beanies?

I'm stuck at episode 2 as well. The 1930s hair is great, but not the current one. I've heard it gets better, so I will try to soldier on.

I'm also watching My Secret Romance. It's a bit inane, but Sung Hoon fills out a suit so nicely.

but Sung Hoon fills out a suit so nicely.

Just a suit?

For some reason this post made me wiki Sung Hoon only to find out that he was a national team swimmer for 14 years and was also a DJ for sometime. When I was watching him swim, I was like, he really can swim, much better than most people who play swimmers, so why doesn't he try out for a role like that!? It really annoys me when someone who is playing the role of an avid swimmer can't swim well; I'm looking at you Ku Hye-sun (Geum Jan-Di, BOF).

Haha, well... I didn't specify what kind of suit ;)

I also looked up his wiki profile. I have a soft spot for swimmers so after learning he was one, my appreciation went up a notch. It'd be interesting if he does play an athlete, though I do wonder about that spinal injury.

lol, true enough.

Maybe the spinal injury prevented him from swimming at a competitive level and he would be ok at a casual level. He seemed to have no problem doing fly and flip turns--provided that was indeed him and not a double. If WFKBJ and BOF are anything to go by, you don't need to do an amazing job, but for me, I appreciate when I can see good technique/form. Are you a swimmer as well by chance?

@hades
Nope, not a swimmer. I just watch and follow sports, generally. During the Olympics, swimming is one of my favourite sports to watch. How about you? Are you an athlete?

Sung Hoon does seem to be able to swim okay at a casual level, and I guess you're right that acting-wise, he probably won't need to do anything too strenuous. I had a good giggle when his character in My Secret Romance had to double up as an underwear model. I mean, why waste that hot physique, eh? ;)

I'm definitely no athlete, but I used to swim a good bit back in the day for fun/exercise. I should get back in the pool though.

Is it me, or does he look bigger here compared to how he looked on Oh My Venus? I went looking to see and then I saw So Ji Sub and Henry. I actually liked that show.

I feel like we hijacked this post. lol. Sry Barbrey.

@hades
He looks bigger? Hmm, maybe he worked out. I didn't watch Oh My Venus, but did see bits of Five Kids, and he probably looked about the same from there. He's come quite a ways since New Tales of Gisaeng (he was stiff as heck there).

Sorry for the hijack, Barbrey. Anyway, I ended up dropping Chicago Typewriter, it had a cat abuser character and I dislike GKP.

Yes, in the most adorkable way! Apparently the cure was to attach an 100 year old ghost to him for cohabiting hijinks. I didn't watch the first 7 episodes - I just dove right in from episode 8 after reading the recaps, getting to the episode 7 recap and being REALLY impatient to find out what happened next... Maybe give it a try from episode 7?
The hair cut I 'gree with, but the 1930s version is cuter. And we have to distinguish between them somehow. I think the current cut is like a part of his character: "Down with excessive, mainstream expressions of male beauty! Also, I hate hair gel."

Of all the kdramas airing right now, The Liar and His Lover got me emotionally invested the most. I can feel the pain of the characters, their dilemmas, their confusion. It's not something usual for me. I usually just enjoy watching kdramas and if I can connect with the character's emotions, then it's a true gem for me. It's not most perfect kdrama out there, the actors are green, some scenes get really cheesy.. but this is what "growing up" is all about, isn't it?

And Chan-Young, let me give you a big hug.

Probably because it's the new format, but I haven't seen very many k-dramas get as many comments as this show has--Goblin comes to mind. If your description is anything to go by, these last few numbers are blowing WFKBJ out the water. That being said, the negatives you pointed out about the show are probably what made me stop after the first episode. That and the male lead's character annoyed me a lot. I recently adopted a no torture myself rule, and others have highlighted that the show is not for everyone and does have its issues, so highly doubt I'll come back to this show.

Do u think it could be because of the new format? that kinda makes sense. Even so, it doesn't really explain the numbers, because other dramas aren't getting as many (justice for radiant office!) or regular posts like open thread or ratings or what the team is watching are getting about the same numbers as pre-makeover. it's not pulling Goblin numbers, but it's above average numbers for sure.
I wasn't going to watch it fully after taking a look at the trailers but the rating and popularity, and honestly, just mainly JB vouching for it, had me change my mind. But after reading what you thought, I'm changing my mind again. I don't know. Oh well. I'll figure it out. I swear I take more time deciding what to watch than I spend watching dramas. lmao

With the new layout, I was referencing notifications and ease of tracking comments. Although notifications don't quite work as well at this point, the fact that you're able to see all your comments in one central location and jump to the threads they are in with ease makes it easier to reply to comments. You bring up a good point with the open thread. I would have thought there would have been more activity there now. Probably Liar is one of those drama anomalies, ratings be damned.

Radiant Office, fighting!

I've never really been into K-pop, but it's starting to get more interesting.

A couple of questions about the site. I know you guys have been faced with bugs and issues here and there, but I still wanted to ask just in case. Would we get the option to change the layout from blog to the other one I can't remember the name of. When the initial update/refresh hit, I saw the option then, but not longer see it now. Also, I think there might be a problem with notifications, because sometimes I see the notification for when someone has responded and other times I don't see the notification. I more see notifications for my wall though. Fighting!

I'm curious. Among beanies here, if you choose between working or advanced studying (e.g postgraduate), what will you choose? Because now I'm torn between them. In one side I want to continue my study (by applying for a scholarship (but I have to wait to be accepted to that scholarship)), but on the other side I would like to work (because almost all of my friends already have a job) and I want to help my parents earning money. It's really stressed me out.

I think that's a tricky one. I wanted to continue on to a postgraduate but I didn't have the money, so I didn't look too hard into an area of interest.
I have the money now (kinda....) but I still don't know what I would do. I'm the opposite to you in that I worked while all my friends continued on with a Masters and even some PhDs.

Some postgraduate courses do allow you to work at the uni too, so you could do the best of both worlds. The earning potential of some jobs is increased after advanced studying and some aren't affected at all, so maybe you want to take that into consideration too? I know it's hard to choose and (annoying as it sounds) at the end of the day the choice is yours (though, clearly you'll be taking other people into consideration too).

When I was at university, I went on a course where we wrote our current age on one line and then the numbers from that until the age of retirement. Then we had to fill in each line with something we wanted to do. It felt impossible - so much time! So please don't feel too rushed - take your time to look over all your options in the best way for you. :)

1day national holiday which falls on Monday here. So I got 3 days off this week (Perfect! I'm not in the mood to work these days)
Had a thought of watching What Happens To My Family. 53 episodes. Solely because of Park Hyung Shik.
I even marathoned Second to Last Love because of Kim Seul Gi.
(I just watched Splash Splah Love and Doo Joon and Kim Seul Gi are too adorable!)
This fangirl behavior of mine, really *shakinghead

DARN IT! Every week I am nagged by a couple of questions about dramas that aren't being recapped on DB. Every week I think "I'm going to ask it in the first few comments on next week's open thread."

Every week I can't remember the questions on Friday. :(

Oo! I remembered two questions:
Anybody here watching Saindang? If so, and if you know, please explain 2 things to me:

1) The king wrote a poem to his loyal supporters, then had one of his insane paranoid freakouts that his anti-fans might find out about it and killed everyone he sent the poem to. I get that. But why did that mean Saim dang and Lee Gyeom could not get married?

2) Most of the characters are reincarnated, but how is Lee Gyeom in the present as both his younger self - Saim dang's assistant and as his older self - the photographer from RADE at the same time?

I'll probably ask this next week because everyone's probably done reading this thread by now.

I only watched the first 3 (or4?) episodes of Siamdang, but I do think I understand why they couldn't get married. It was because the "leak" of the poem occurred by Siamdang herself (through her father) and since her father was executed by the king, essentially, that Siamdang would eventually be killed as well and anyone she would have associated with, and more so if she were to marry within the royal family. So, to save her life and Lee Gyeom, they couldn't marry. It know, convoluted, but I've come to realize that the monarchies in Korean times were really paranoid about loosing power, so killed anyone that looked like they had a hand in subverting that delicate power base.

Oh, I think I remember that the king made a deal with her dad (which the assassin then relayed to her dad) that if he got her married quietly and her husband and her moved from there, that only the father would die and no one else in the family.

Same thing happens to me over and over again. You could try following DB on twitter, that way you will be notified the moment a new thread is posted. You could also write down your questions as they pop in your head on an app on your phone or a format you're familiar with and just copy paste it when the thread comes up. This also decreases the amount of time you take to post your question which in turn hopefully decreases the likelihood of someone posting the same question right before you, maybe. Sigh, if only I took my own advice.

I don't watch Saindang, so can't help you with that, sry.
