Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching
by DB Staff
More new shows! Did any of this week’s premieres grab anyone’s attention and take over a coveted spot on the watch list? There’s still another week of premieres left to go, after which I’ll probably have to drop a few shows just to keep sane. But… how to choose? Stress! –girlfriday
javabeans
Father, I’ll Take Care of You: I’m in a bit of a drama-watching funk these days—or should I say a drama-starting funk, to be more accurate—and can’t quite muster the energy to engage in all the new premieres, even though there are a couple shows in there I think I’ll end up enjoying. I actually find it a relief to have a show like this available at the moment, because it’s familiar, comfortable, and easy. The cute romance feels like it’s taking a mid-show breather, so right now it’s the Kim Jae-won storyline that’s got more of my interest—I still think it’s overly dramatic and wrought, but I totally felt for him when he wrestled with his rage over hating his enemies and feeling so pained to watch them being so loving to each other. Thanks to the flashbacks I want him to get his revenge, although in the current storyline I just want him to make up with his little brother and be happy.
Hwarang: I like this show, but it’s a little too light to get its claws into me, and I often take days to finish an episode because it’s so very pausable. I checked back in with my old-sageuk-loving dad about it, and it was funny-sad to hear how disappointed he was with the show, now that he’d seen it and realized it wasn’t the awesome historical epic he was hoping for in his mind. (“But it’s such a great story! It’s all true! Hwarang was so awesome and cool! This story… what did they do it?”)
Introverted Boss: Yeon Woo-jin is so perfect for this, and I’m right there with him, rooting for him. Unfortunately, I don’t love the heroine so much even though I really wished I did, though I think the concept works. I think they were trying so hard to contrast them and make their symbolic differences extra-stark that they went overboard in making her pushy in an off-putting way. I’ll still watch this, though, and hope I warm to her.
girlfriday
Legend of the Blue Sea: I was happy with the ending to the show, though I wished more had happened in the finale, which felt more like an extended epilogue than a full episode. Overall I wanted the mythology to be twistier, and for the past to influence the future more intricately (and vice versa), so I was disappointed that the show followed such a straight path all the way to the finish line. It wasn’t an epic romance despite the legend, but it was a sweet, satisfying rom-com that gave me warm fuzzy feelings and made me laugh out loud quite a lot.
Defendant: Oh, this one’s going to be good. It’s got a rock-solid premise, good execution that makes the thriller actually thrilling, and a great cast headlining. Ji Sung is dependably good as the prosecutor who wakes up in prison with no memory of the murder he supposedly committed, and Eom Ki-joon sends chills down my spine as the chaebol twins. Of all the new shows so far, this is the one I’m most interested in following. Someone has to bring that villain down!
Introverted Boss: This show still seems wobbly on its feet, even though there are elements that interest me enough to keep watching. The directorial style is so similar to Oh Hae-young Again that I like the show most when it deviates in any way and does something new—my favorite parts are the horror fakeouts every time someone suspects the hero of being a serial killer, or his stream of consciousness what-if interludes. The whole coffee fiasco where he couldn’t figure out how to alter his triple-shot espresso without hurting his secretary’s feelings was priceless. I guess I like the secretary more than the heroine, because all of my favorite scenes are with her.
Hwarang: But… the bromance can’t be broken already! It just started! On the upside, I really like that the focus is turning to the main bromance, which is by far the most interesting relationship in this show.
Chief Kim: I didn’t think Namgoong Min could top the weirdness and hilarity of his character in Beautiful Gong Shim, but he just might do it as Chief Kim. What a fun character and a funny drama, full of clever cuts and cheeky writing, and a totally zany sense of humor. I burst out laughing when he came to a brawl armed with helium gas and turned the mobsters into Alvin and the Chipmunks. What a nut!
Solomon’s Perjury: I’m super excited to watch the final two episodes this weekend. I hope I’m not getting my expectations too high for the resolution to all the mysteries on this show, but you can’t call a whodunit good unless it goes out with a bang, right?

Naked Fireman: The title is a trap — the promised scenes of six-pack abs and shirtless hotties were few and far between. That being said, I actually enjoyed this short four-episode drama, although it definitely could have used more episodes to flesh out the main plot arcs, which had numerous interesting twists that could have been more fully exploited in a longer show. I was initially curious because it starred the girl who had been in the running to be SBS’s My Sassy Girl’s leading lady, Jung In-sun, and I thought that she did a pretty admirable job for her first main role. But the entire time, I was a little distracted because I thought that Jung In-sun with long hair looked exactly like Choi Jung-won… but maybe that’s just me. Overall, it was a good tide-over drama until I find my next TV addiction.

Currently recapping: Solomon’s Perjury
Legend of the Blue Sea: You know, Blue Sea was good. It was the first thing I watched every Wednesday and Thursday, and I was always content with the characters and where the story was going. But it was never the kind of show that I would find myself thinking about hours after an episode ended. I’d actually forget about it until the next week, which is pretty unusual for me. Though the show contained plenty of goodness — a cute romance, a gripping backstory, etc. — it felt like that’s all it was trying to be: good. Not great. And it makes me sad to say that, since the drama was so hyped up. I’ll miss you for a little while, Joon-jae and Chung, but I don’t see your legend sticking with me for too long.
Hwarang: My new crack. Because there are so many colorful characters, there’s not a moment where I feel too bored. It’s just a lot of good ol’ fun, which was exactly what I asked for. I do have one complaint though and, unfortunately, it’s the romance. I’m totally Park Seo-joon biased, so I shipped Ah Ro with Sun-woo since the very beginning. The connection they had with Mak Mun was simultaneously sad and sweet, and I loved the idea that they could bond from that terrible loss. But now that they’re actually together, they seem a bit… awkward? And not the cute kind of awkward. I don’t know, is it just me?
Introverted Boss: I’m on the fence with this one. All the cute, vibrant promos got me excited for the Marriage Not Dating team’s latest rom-com, but I surprised myself by being completely turned off by our extroverted heroine. I can’t figure out if it’s because of the character or the actress. Or maybe even both. It could be that Park Hye-soo is still quiet little Eun-jae from Age of Youth in my eyes and it’s messing with my head. I want to keep watching since I love Yeon Woo-jin as the title introvert (he’s just wonderful), but I might need to step away for now and marathon later.

Thanks for the heads up. I will hold off Introverted Boss and Defendent. I am only watching Hwarang on weekdays. Then Laurel House Tailor and Father I'll take care of you.
Can't even summon up interest in anything new until more episodes airs. I am very disappointed IB hasn't been living up to its promise.
I watched ep 18-20 of Legend of the blue sea. It's not enough or interesting enough to bother starting from episode 1.
Does that mean I am literally left with Voice as an only choice?

I am not even touching that with a 10 foot pole. I don't like Survivor much less a Kdrama with co ordinated clothes and immaculately messy hair. If there is such a thing. And everyone else except the female lead dies?

I believe that there is a big twist later. Spoilers: So far we know that there is ONE more survivor other than the amnesia lead gal (don't know who yet) at the Chinese hospital that is keeping under wraps for now.

Is there a genuine mystery in solomon perjury? then i will watch
jap version is super boring and by ep 3/4 one knows that thsi is not a whodunnit but just a comment on society... as to how one attaches stereotypes, bullying, role of teacher, revenge of the bullied, so called brave folks and coward inner selves.

Live-watched and completed ROMANTIC DOCTOR, GOBLIN, and BLUE SEA, after starting out in late August with MOON LOVERS, MOONLIGHT DRAWN BY CLOUDS, and MAN LIVING IN OUR HOUSE. It's been a long haul, and the first time I've watched so many (4) currently airing shows simultaneously. Plus I viewed a whole bunch of older dramas, films, TV movies, and drama specials while live-watching.
To get over the post-parting letdown after GOBLIN and BLUE SEA, I turned to CAN YOU HEAR MY HEART?, and it did the trick. About a month ago I had rewatched SOUL MATE and DISCOVERY OF ROMANCE, and loved them even more than the first time around, especially for their OSTs and background music. (FYI, javabeans has posted general comments for SOUL MATE under Recaps, plus the song list. Daebak!)
BAD FAMILY and STARS FALLING FROM THE SKY / PICK UP THE STARS are two dramas I enjoyed this fall for their examination of families of choice versus blood ties.
AMORE MIO is a 4-part drama special (2012, KBS2) that I watched just after New Year's. My take on it:

JUST ORDINARY LOVE STORY (4 episodes) was anything but ordinary. It might be a good watch for Yeon Woo-jin fans having issues with INTROVERTED BOSS.
As a warm-up to REBEL which debuts this coming week, I've taken the plunge and am marathoning HONG GIL-DONG. I just finished episode 7/24, and find it entertaining, with touching flashes of heart. At times I have flashbacks to Mel Brooks's ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS.
Currently live-watching VOICE and SAIMDANG, both of which I'm enjoying. Am looking forward to TOMORROW WITH YOU.
To alleviate my HIGH ANXIETY from watching VOICE, I took in some scenes from LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. ;-)

oh so there are some beanies who are also in a drama slump..i wonder if its because we were too spoiled during 2016 with lots of awesome dramas.
Current:
Hwarang - still rooting for JiDwi, can't wait for his rise to power.
Hiatus:
Father I'll Take Care of You - 8 more episodes before I pick it up again. Hopefully by that time more SungJoon&DongHui happy moments & switched cousins storyline is still good.
Introverted Boss - I know it's still fairly a new drama, but no matter how much I like Yeon Woojin, I can't seem to warm up to his leading lady. I got even more interested with his secretary (Jeon Hyosung). Hopefully, I'll enjoy it by the time I binge watch it.
Rewatching:
1% of Anything (2016) - current go-to drama
Anticipating:
Strong Woman - PBY & PHS & Jisoo, I can't ask for anything more.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo: only on the first episode, but the vibrant youthfulness and spunky, cheery vibes I get from this show is already making me a happy lil chipmunk, just munching away on its K-drama acorn. i love Bok-joo standing up for her teammates against those snobby, haughty gymnasts (Jo Soo-hyang plays bitchy girls SO well) and Nam Joo-hyuk is surprisingly upping his ante in this role. looking forward to more!
Descendants of the Sun: one...more...episode...left. *dragging myself by the tips of my fingernails to the finish line* something about this show is making me slow and sluggish, and i don't know what puts me off: the 'meh' romance, the laughable (and predictable) war plot, the perfectly unattainable characters...yeah, it's probably just the fact that i don't really give a damn about anything or anyone in this show (except for the bromance. ANYTHING for the bromance).
Goblin: one of this show's charms and assets is the ever-wonderful Grim Reaper x Goblin bromance (as i said, i LIVE for bromance). the romance lost me when the whole pull-or-notso while the beautiful melancholy angst is starting to take center stage - and i DO enjoy seeing the backstory, mythology, etc take place (my theories WERE right!) - i'll be over here in the corner replaying the Slow Motion Walk From the Grocery Store scene again and again.
City Hunter: i picked this out in a whim during my winter holidays and got engrossed in the revenge plot and Lee Jun-hyuk (god, he's great). although the revenge plot is taking FOREVER, i am loving the whole cloaked-hero-saves-the-day theme going on. there are no morally grey or justification for the enemies going on in this shebang, but that's forgiveable, and it makes it THAT much easier to root for our resident hottie Lee Min-ho. the romance is great, too, but honestly? i am so far gone on the Second Lead ship i can almost feel the iceberg coming.
When A Snail Falls in Love - this is a crime-thriller-romance T-drama, and so far i'm immensely enjoying it. the cases are zippy and the cinematography expansively beautiful - not to mention, Wang Kai isn't exactly an eyesore to look at. however, i'm still confused as to why the romance is so scarce (there's too many gangster and fight scenes here, guys. i want my Snail-Lion moments!) even though the original book from which this drama is adapted from has a LOT of romance material to work on. i'm on the 19th episode, with 3 more to go though, so let's hope for at least a biiit more romantic scenes. throw me a breadcrumb here, Show! stop being such a Tease with a capital T.

Wow, this is like written by a kindred spirit!
WFKBJ - I marathoned it last week. You'll be a happy lil' chipmunk all the way.
DOTS - I feel your pain. I don't know how I even dragged myself to the end. I think it was for the love of Song Joong-Ki and the second leads romance.
Goblin - 100% agree with you on losing interest in the romance. Grocery Store Tunnel Walk is my new thing (with that OST). I just need a tunnel and long coat to strut along with my shopping.
City Hunter - I never ever have Second Lead Syndrome but prosecutor nearly had me (if you like him try Naked Fireman, 4 episode mini-drama). The revenge story is gripping and there are interesting twists.
When a Snail Falls in Love - aaah Wang Kai! I've been profiling people into animals now thanks to this show LOL. There will be breadcrumbs.

The Awesome Queen of Swag that is Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo has seriously crippled me from being able to enjoy much of the new batch of kdramas for now.
From an expected lightweight rom-com, it turned into a heavyweight champion almost from the get-go and knocked off a number of old time favourites from my (what i thought was permanent place) top 10 Kdramas list.
The only other time this has happened thus far was when i watched Marriage, Not Dating after a 6 month hiatus from watching all Kdramas. Though i enjoyed it as much as WFKBJ, i cannot yet bring myself to watch the MND team's new show, Introverted Boss. Which is sad...sobs....
For now, all i can do now is turn to the familiar comfort of Running Man (my safety blanket) and oddly enough, 2 ongoing 'makjang' dramas (i hope i have categorised them in the correct genre) that I never thought i would ever watch but am now hooked on when i struggled to look for something to fill the void left by WFKBJ.
Still Loving You and Love is Drop by Drop leading couples have drawn me in when i least expected it and I'm quite tickled by the fact that i am actually enjoying watching two 100+ episode shows when i have vowed never to do so. The longest running drama that i have ever watched before was Smile, You (45 episodes and Queen Seon Deok (62 episodes)
Who would've thunk it?!?!?!
Oh well, right now, i'm enjoying the soft smooth rides after being energetically hyper with WFKBJ.
Lets hope that my 'slump' with the new shows will disappear soon so i can get back to enjoying new shows especially when Lee Soon Kyung and Nam Joo Hyuk appear in new shows. I can't wait to catch up with them again!

i'm finally caught up with father i'll take care of you! the nice thing about a good weekend drama is that if you pick the right one, they can be so nice. they're comfortable, sweet, light, and simply easy to watch. i like that i can turn off my brain. i did think this one was a bit of a slow start; quite honestly i wouldn't have stuck with it if it hadn't been for my liking for lee tae-hwan. now, i'm much more interested in kim jae-won's storyline/romance.
i thought it would have been nice if they had introduced the revenge motive a bit earlier—it was hinted at, but i gotta say i became much more interested in the show once it became clear that kim jae-won was out for revenge. and i'm glad it's not in a makjang-ish type way. it's mostly sweet and fun to watch. i agree it's a bit melodramatic at times, and i don't think the writing is the absolute best or the most subtle, especially with kim jae-won's decidedly more pronounced mood fluctuations in recent episodes, but it's still something i'm glad i picked up. and there are other mysteries being hinted at left to unravel!
other shows i'm watching are defendant and saimdang. defendant is probably my top pick. i was thirsty for something like this after an extended period of light fluffy trendy stuff, which i completely and totally loved. but you don't want to eat only your favorite flavour of ice cream for the rest of your life, do you?
also, did anyone watch the daniel henney episodes of i live alone that aired last month? after literally years of never quite understanding why people found him so attractive to the extent that they did, i finally got it after watching those episodes. why am i always so late to everything?! hahaha

Going through this thread I've come to the conclusion that there is a collective sense of drama slump. Instead of the stress we should feel juggling dramas, many of us are cautiously waiting for new shows to begin.
Bad timing? Bad shows? January blues? Or just lack of tree oppas?
