Song Seung-heon courted for Saimdang PD’s next drama

I guess the director of Saimdang, Light’s Diary must be really happy with Song Seung-heon’s work in that drama, because he’s already courting the actor for a reunion on his next project. PD Yoon Sang-ho, also of Bride of the Century, Bichunmoo, and Tamra the Island, has announced that his next drama will be an adaptation of the novel Wind, Clouds, and Rain, about the political rivalry between Empress Myeongseong and Heungseon Daewongun in late Joseon.

The novel of the same name by Lee Byung-joo was originally published as a serial in 1977-78, and was already adapted into a drama once before in 1989-90. Song Seung-heon is considering an offer to play Heungseon Daewongun, father of King Gojong. Gojong was made king at a young age as an indirect heir, and so until he became of age, his father was made regent and allowed to rule in his place. Daewongun wielded so much power that he was effectively king for ten years. His greatest political rival would prove to be his son’s wife, Empress Myeongseong (also known as Queen Min), who controlled the court once Gojong assumed power.

Empress Myeongseong is probably the better known drama about these historical figures, which aired in 2001-02 and starred Moon Geun-young, Lee Mi-yeon, and Choi Myung-il in the title role and Yoo Dong-geun as Daewongun. I can’t imagine Song Seung-heon and Yoo Dong-geun being cast to play the same character, but obviously this will be an entirely different drama.

Saimdang, Light’s Diary has only just begun airing on SBS last week, though filming wrapped all the way back in June of last year. So it’s actually not so crazy for the director to be planning his next drama. I haven’t seen it yet, so you guys will have to tell me—is Song Seung-heon any better? Or is asking if Saimdang is an improvement on Dr. Jin a moot question?

Wind, Clouds, and Rain has yet to find a broadcaster or set an air date.

Really?!
Why does that make me inordinately happy?

It is difficult to tell yet. He's only been in a few scenes. There was some BIG eyes in the very first episode, but he is so freaking beautiful in the second, and gets to be flirty, I don't know if I noticed how he acted. It seems like he was using the very lowest part of his register to sound serious.

Can anyone say how his sageuk accent is?

Did I mention how beautiful he is?

Well, I've only watched the first few minutes of episode 1, so here goes:

He had this surprised expression on his face as he was bent over, painting frenziedly. I'm not sure whether he was supposed to look surprised. But he was looking surprised. I was surprised why he was looking surprised.

His eyes are soooo BIGGGGGG.

His wisps of hair looked really pretty in the light.

His shoulders looked broader than ever.

I can't tell you about his chest because he hasn't taken off his clothes. Yet.

He was doing the deep, heavy breathing part really, really well. He went huh huh huh huh. He was exerting himself, bent over, painting a fetus...nah, just kidding.

My most favorite part - he leaned over the stairway and hollered really, really loud. It was a really good, long and LOUD holler. AHHHHHHHH. Like that.

I haven't seen episode 2, but if you say he's beautiful and flirty, jomo, I am so going to watch it. Nobody does beautiful and flirty as good as SSH.

OMG! Our Hand Towel is back! And it seems that the whole crowd on that Handtowel tread so long ago is coming back too.

Proof No.1 Jomo is first.
Proof No. 2 YY is second.

Who could resist SSH? I haven't seen Saimdang yet. But Jomo and YY descriptions are so mouth watering that I have to swallow my saliva. And kind of sad that GF did not provide equally mouthwatering pictures of uri Hand Towel.

Jomo's word of BIG eyes and YY's stressing at BIGGGGG are extremely convincing. SSH is BIG. Period.

I didn't watch Jin but I watched his movie which I couldn't even remember the title now except for how beautiful he was as a cheating husband. And there was no hand towel to obstruct our view. I guess he finally had enough of the Hand Towel endearment. Thanks God!

His kissing scenes , his taking his clothes off scenes all were perfectly done. His dreamy expression when he taught about their cheating acts resonated really well with me. I dreamyly look at my screen and dream about his next drama where I could enjoy him taking his clothes off for hours.

I don't care about the gendre or role that he would take as long as he strive really HARD to keep throwing his worn Hand Towel away.

He himself is enough to burn the screen. No wind no cloud no rain would be enough to scare me away from watching this perfection.

Yes, yes and yes. Who cares about plot and acting and all that unimportant stuff, right? Because when Hand Towel appears, we just stare at him, RIVETED. That beauty is mind-numbing.

I'm just wondering how he's going to squeeze in a shower scene here. But knowing our Hand Towel, he'll find a way.

Because showering is in his blood.

I had a strange dream last night; Hand Towel was in it. In my dream, he was showering (what else is new?) and he turned to me, very, very slowly, soap suds, steam and all, and he said, his voice pitched, in jomo's words: "the very lowest part of his register to sound serious", and wait for it, IN SAGEUK! (seriously, wow), eyebrows drawn up in a frown, big eyes dark and um, BIG:

"You can take me out of the shower, but you can never take the shower out of me."

Dramaland is not lacking in talents and sageuk actors. Is it too much to ask for one of them to headline a sageuk?

Maybe the PD loves him. Don't know. But surely there are many better actors out there. I think he should just act in romcom and plays as handsome chaebol (like My Princess), provided the female lead is much better actress and can carry the show on her own. Maybe the PDnim should cast him in a romcom rather than sageuk.

By the way, have you started Saimdang Kiara?

I think 4 episodes is a measurement whether we want to continue or stop the drama. About his acting, I admit i am more drawn with his handsomw face and hot body lol, not his acting. I have watched so many of his drama before, i can be pretty sure how his acting. But maybe yes maybe he will surprise us with his acting this time.

*Sigh* He is so out of his element when it comes to sageuk. But then I don't remember him being in his element when it comes to acting. Yes he is beautiful but his acting is not.

We are talking about a historical figure like Heungseon Daewongun who was previously portrayed by some of the best historical actors ever to grace K-tv. How do we go from the charismatic Yoo Dong-geun to this?

I've never seen him before so watching Saimdang is my only way of judging him - no opinion yet after two episodes. I actually liked him in Dr. Jin (at first.) I didn't think it was his fault the drama was so ridiculous. It was the writing. I enjoyed the acting in it and the bromance between Song Seung-heon and Lee Beom-soo. I actually was following and into the story until it just went nuts.

yeah, he's only been in a few scenes so far. but i did have to try really hard not to crack up laughing at the opening scenes of the drama. just the madman crazed expression on his face.

i don't know, since when did watching song seung-hun act become something of a comedy? maybe dr. jin was just too much for me to handle. he should have stuck with rom coms like my princess (same goes for kim tae-hee).

that said, i really do want him to do well. he'll always have a a soft spot in my heart because of autumn fairytale. i'm hoping this is a sign that his performance in saimdang was nothing to criticize for once.

I actually love her a lot, not only as an actress but as a real person as well. I think I can understand why Koreans love her.She does the villain / badass role very well. She was quite a boring to watch in Love Story in Harvard and Iris.

Required fields are marked *

i've seen pretty much everything kim tae-hee has done in dramas. i actually thought she was best in her early roles like stairway to heaven and love story in harvard. the latter is one of my favourite nostalgia dramas.

she was definitely a little weak in iris, though it didn't matter too much since it was really lee byung-hun's show, and all the flashy action/her beauty/charm almost made up for her acting deficiencies. but in jang ok-jung, a show she was burdened with carrying solo for the first time if i'm not mistaken, she gave her worst performance.

i did watch yong pal, but truthfully i couldn't see any marked improvement from her earlier (pre-iris) roles. she wasn't bad, but i didn't find her as improved as people kept saying she was. but of course, that's just my opinion. i think i just don't find her that interesting to watch as an actress. i do like her and she's fascinating enough that i'll tune in for anything she does... but i find i get bored quickly.

there's one thing kim does really outstandingly well though, and that's crying scenes. it's always surprising to me how well and convincingly she cries—huge tears just rolling down her face. good criers are rare!

Ok so I beg to differ with your opinion, I think Love Story in Harvard was among her weakest role together with her role in Iris. But I do love the drama generally because it feels nostalgic.

Her performance in Jang Ok Jung definitely not the worst although of course not the best especially if we compare with sageuk actors. But I never bored with her honestly, I think her choice of roles kinda interesting. Yong Pal marked her best performance imo and for me she deserved the award.

Wouldn't dismiss KTH's acting in MP simply b/c it's a romcom.

Unlike for SSH (who had it easier playing the "straight-man" and basically just had to be smooth and charming), KTH had to carry the emotional weight of the series (pretty much had all the emotional scenes) and provide the comedy (doing comedy well is difficult, many an accomplished actor/actress can't pull off a comedic scene).

Would say one of the better acting jobs in a romcom (another much maligned actress in Lee Yeon-hee gave a good performance in "Miss Korea," altho her role didn't have quite as much of the comedic element).

I wish the daily series was available with English subs. It has amazing cast, with Yoo Dong-Geun in the lead.
http://asianwiki.com/Empress_Myseongseong
And then we had the movie "A Sword with no name" with Jo Seung-Woo and Soo Ae in the lead. The story of Empress Myseongseong is so tragic. I am glad to hear there is an upcoming drama about her. I only wish there was a better cast then this proposed SSH. (He should not have been in Saimdang either... They should have brought Ji Jin-Hee)

Well, it's hard to tell if SSH has improved in his acting so far. I just watched the first 2 episodes and I kinda had a bias going in because I had read a lot of comments saying it was boring or whatever. So I wasn't really expecting to be at all engaged despite it being LYA's comeback drama after 13 yrs!

But it seems like a really interesting story and a lot of things happening. I can't say that about some of the other dramas on air currently.

SSH looks as dashing as ever and I certainly like a man in Joseon garb. Again, I'll have to see if there is any improvement what so ever in his acting. I imagine there wont really be but I hope at least he has some good ole fashion chemi with LYA.

SSH mentioned in an interview that he deliberately deviated from orthodox Sageuk accent as he found it boring and stilted. The role in Saimdang may actually fit that unconventional mode as he is supposed to be the pariah son of a high-born but debauched aristocrat and a prostitute, who is raised up at the age of seven by a strict-laced aunt. Obviously he rebels against the aunt and keeps secret company with the bandits and beggars, later to be of immense use to help Samdang as the story develops. Or so I guess. The so-called Gatsby of the Joseun era.
