Lee Sang-yoon up to reunite with Lee Bo-young in SBS’s Whisper

Ooh, drama reunion! I never saw Lee Bo-young (God’s Gift–14 Days) and Lee Sang-yoon (On the Way to the Airport) together in their hit weekend drama My Daughter Seo-young, but I love each of them separately, and based on the cute couple stills and the ratings (it was a huge hit that reached 47.6%), I may have to marathon their first drama before they sign on to their second. The two actors are up for the leading roles in Punch writer Park Kyung-soo’s next drama, a police-legal thriller called Whisper headed to SBS this spring. Supporting players Kwon Yul (Bring It On, Ghost) and Park Se-young (Beautiful Mind) are also considering offers.

Park Kyung-soo is known for his hard-hitting dramas that deal with power and corruption (The Chaser, Empire of Gold, Punch) and he’ll be reuniting with PD Lee Myung-woo (Punch, You’re All Surrounded) for this new suspense melodrama about the massive corruption dealt out of the biggest law firm in Korea. Our protagonists will be the good guys out to uncover a scandal of greed and power.

Lee Bo-young has been cast as a detective who only sees half of her paycheck because she has to repay her family’s debt. She’s a section chief who spends all of her time with petty criminals and speaks harshly, but she’s also a young girl at heart who still blushes when she’s around her crush. Lee Sang-yoon has been offered the role of an elite judge with a brilliant mind and a warm heart, who listens to those who are weak. He’s a character who looks just as comfortable in sweats as he does in a judge’s robes, and he hates nepotism more than anything. He wants to show his father that he can climb the (metaphorical) rock cliff with nothing but his bare hands and stand at the summit.

Kwon Yul, Park Se-young

Kwon Yul has been offered the role of an attorney at Taebaek, the law firm at the center of the story. He’s a sharp character born with a golden spoon in his mouth, who despite being wealthy and elite, knows how to blend and get along with the regular folk. He handles large corporations and uses the law to increase their profit margins—something he has exceptional skill in—and all the associates who want hefty incentives are clamoring to work under him. Kwon Yul seems pretty perfect for that kind of character.

Park Se-young is up to play a spoiled, entitled heiress who’s decked out in designer goods from head to toe and makes her privilege known. She’s lived her whole life treating others however she pleased, while no one dares to treat her badly. She suffers from severe mood swings, and in one instant her emotions can suddenly flip from joy to sorrow. Yikes, she sounds like a terror.

It’s nice to know that our leads are a cop and a judge who aren’t corrupt (I’m hoping… you never know with this writer!), because with a giant firm filled with shady lawyers backed by chaebols, we need all the good guys we can get. I’m just happy because I’ve been dying for Lee Bo-young to be badass again since God’s Gift, and I’ve been dying for Lee Sang-yoon to do something dark since Liar Game, so I feel like the winner here.

Whisper will be a Monday-Tuesday drama on SBS, following Defendant in March.

Yay! I love these two! :)
There seems to be a trend between Ji Sung and Lee Bo young in reuniting with their co-stars. :)

Eeeeeeeh! It's not Liar Game Season 2, but I'll take any Lee Sang-yoon character that is closest to Ha Woo-jin! Wished they also added grumpypants to that brilliant-mind-warm-hearted character of his. Plus! This has badass Lee Bo-young in it! So excite!

I like both leads but another police-legal thriller straight after Defendant ??

Yes, I also think about it. The timing is a bit off. Why SBS put Whisper after Defendant? Both legal thriller drama. And watching one after another for some people might sound boring. They should give an interlude drama between them. Just like they put Moon Lovers between Doctors and Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim. But, its okay for me. Jisung then Lee Bo Young and Park Kyung-soo. Haaaa....

Yeah, I noticed that too.

I would love to see these two in a drama together.
Their roles also sound pretty good.

But I don't usually like to watch too many similar genres at the same time. I hope each show can stand out from each other.

It is indeed long drama, 50 episodes, but really worth watching. I watched it last year as a filler while waiting for next episodes of Cheese in the Trap (which sadly, I dropped later). I thought it would be mostly boring and dull as any other weekend drama. But I was wrong. It's actually a gem. I don't say this because I am a fan of Park Hae Jin (ok, I am a fan but will not be blindly love every drama he plays), but because this drama gives each character their time of development. I was amazed at how neat the plot was. Basically no evil character, they are just bunch of good people who are trapped in situation where they unintentionally looked bad in other people's point of view.
If you haven't watched it, you can try watching random episodes. I tried it at first and ended up watching the whole episodes from the start. :)

Please writer-nim, do a Saeguk next.

I wouldn't consider myself much of a fan of Saeguks, I am not opposed to them( especially fusion Saeguks) but I'm not scrambling to watch them either.
But with this writer, I'm actively hoping he writes one. I'd love to see him play the Kingdom politics like A Game Of Thrones, in fact he'd be capable of an adaptation ( not that I want one).

I felt while watching Punch that it was a Saeguk set in modern times. The way some shots and angles were set, with the lined up, bowing prosecutors, the table setting, the way the assistants often flanked the sitting boss while standing straight and who can forget that elevator climb? It was like watching a king ascend the throne while all his subjects bowed below. I've been craving a Saeguk ever since the thought entered my head.

Yay for the Lee's!! I've heard of the Lee Sang Yoon dimples, having only seen him in Liar Game where they were no where in sight. This is the first time I'm seeing it in pictures. Lovely! He reminds me of Lee Seo Jin.

I love Lee Bo Young. The end!

I didn't like her in MDSY at first because she was such dark and heavy character, but loved LSY for his love for her. Funny that she took the role because another actress turned down but the show was Daebak and she got the top acting award.

Maybe it wouldn't be so much fun if it wasn't Lee Bo Young. I once accidentally read old article about MDS that it was offered to different actor and actress (Kim Jihoon and the actress who played his partner in Wish upon a star) before it landed to Lee Bo Young and Park Hae Jin. And I'm glad the previous actors turned it down.

Omg, perfect! I just sooo like their chemistry in My Daughter Seo Young, i've rewatched its last ten eps (the fully angst ones) a dozen times already haha.. it feels like reuniting with ex, considering they're married in MDSY, and this new drama will run straight after jisung's (LBY's IRL hubby) drama.. oh the fanfic ekeke

First Ji Sung then Lee Bo Young? Color me pleased! Hope there won't be a ratings comparison between the two dramas, but being an old seasoned couple, they'd probably laugh it off and get over it.

Bring it on!
