Lee Hyun-woo, Red Velvet’s Joy confirmed to play The Liar and His Lover

New tvN drama The Liar and His Lover, an adaptation of the popular Japanese manga Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru, has been confirmed for the network’s spring Monday-Tuesday slot, and the two leads have been cast: Lee Hyun-woo (Moorim School) and Red Velvet’s Joy are confirmed to headline. From my initial understanding of the manga, I thought this romance would have an age gap, but with these casting choices, it looks like tvN is going for more of a youth-drama feel.

The Liar and His Lover is a love story about a depressed genius sound producer who finds inspiration in voices and the girl who lifts him out of his deep pain with her addictive voice. He initially meets her when he’s living under a hidden identity, but her courageous honesty and beautiful singing draws him back to her again and again. The drama is supposed to capture how this prodigy, who is so confident in his world of music, becomes awkward and unsure when it comes to love.

Lee Hyun-woo will be playing the musician-composer, and Joy will be the high school student who falls in love with him at first sight. To be honest, I prefer Lee Hyun-woo in bright, happy roles (Master of Study, To the Beautiful You), just because his infectious smile is so sweet. But I know he’s definitely capable of pulling off more nuanced, serious characters (Kye Baek, Equator Man). It’s just that the last time I saw him as a moody musician (Moorim School), it didn’t go down well. However, I’m glad to see that one failed drama hasn’t gotten him down, and that he’s coming back to show us his full potential.

As for Joy, I’m hoping for the best — it is her official acting debut, and there are mostly question marks all around as to how she’ll do. She did have a stint on variety show We Got Married with Yook Sung-jae, and they had cute chemistry, so I was left with an overall positive impression. But of course, dramas are a completely different ballgame, so I don’t know what to expect.

tvN’s new drama The Liar and His Lover, produced by PD Kim Jin-min (Marriage Contract, Time Between Dog and Wolf), will start airing in March after Introverted Boss ends.

I enjoyed the JMovie a lot so hopefully this is somewhat good. I see that SM is back at it again giving lead roles out......I like Joy she's super sweet so here's hoping she can act.

Fortunately she actually won an audition for this. Let's tone down the SM-shade a bit since it's conjecture, while the open audition did in fact happen :) some people said there were 200 actresses and like 20 idols in the audition and they were looking for someone who could sing so that was her resume advantage

I don't want to be skeptical but an audition with 200 actresses and 20 idols and she get casted, it's either she's really good or someone pulled the strings. After all, this is show business and auditions can be staged. However, if the audition is as legit as they say then I have high expectations of her.

Talent alone won't win you an audition. You have to fit the character well. That they've casted Joy, I believe the producers are going after a certain energy that she has (plus all the checks in their grocery list). She also did pretty well in impromptu stuff during guestings in JTBC's Knowing Brother (아는 형님) and MBC's My Little Television. There's reason to believe she'll do fine.

And we're talking about tVN, so I doubt SM could actually put heavy influence in casting. tVN is CJ E&M. It's an even bigger conglomerate. They can probably make mistakes but they certainly ain't bowing down to SM for casting.

(And please, as if SM folks can't act. Key, Onew, BoA, Baekhyun, and Minho are doing pretty solid these days too. And Kyungsoo! Just naming a few. I mean, you gotta give it to these guys somehow. They didn't even train to become actors but they are doing so well. They don't try new things for no reason... anymore, at least.)

Actually it's 300 actresses and idols in their 20's and they're looking for someone who can sing, play guitar and act. Joy seems to be a pretty legit candidate. Here's the source http://www.redvelvetupdates.com/post/155803693416/staff-account-170113-the-staff-said-shehe-works#notes

Lee Hyun Woo oh Lee Hyun Woo, such talent you have but such drama you pick.

But even without knowing the casting, i have been anticipating the drama because of the PD and the japanese movie itself.

Joy? Red Velvet Joy right? She has such a nice tone. I love her from what i have been seeing. I won't comment about acting because i have never saw her act. For some reason i have a good feeling about this so i am tuning in. Before anyone jumping on their guns, she went through auditions with 300 actresses and idols. They wanted to do musical kind of drama. The description in a way remind me of Monstar. Suddenly, this become a drama that i personally cannot wait to watch

Thanks for the info about the auditions. I was initially highly skeptical based on the fact that they cast an idol with no real acting experience for the female lead, but when I found out that the PD was Kim Jin-min, I started to feel less skeptical about it because he is really gifted at bringing out the best in actors. And now that I know that he and his team auditioned 300 women for this role, I'm feeling cautiously optimistic.

Not that I'm completely questioning the legitimacy of the casting; but with the audition-debacle that happened for My Sassy Girl, I just can't put genuine trust in audition process in kdramas unless they actually show it (through clips of auditions, for e.g.).

[For example: There was a Filipino drama from way back when (a Spanish telenovela remake), and the network released videos of the auditions for the titular character. And as a viewer, I saw how justified the decision of the casting staff.]

With that being said, I'm excited for another Lee Hyun Woo. Moorim School, for many, was a bad one, but I thought that the cast did whatever they were handed with good acting and delivery. And no matter how many badly-written drama LHW stars in, it won't change my mind how good of an actor he is, thanks to his previous strong roles.

Like all of you, i have always been skeptical on idol casting. However, i am particularly annoyed when i know they cannot act. I don't want to say names but i avoid a certain expected 'hit' that should be like DOTS because of the actress.

Now, in this case, i have always been quite adverse to idols but not as much when it comes to new idols who i have never seen them act. Since, they are a blank sheet, there is a possibility for a good acting.

Ignore the background and everything. Whatever shady thing happen at the back, you would not know about it because you are not from that side or either can do anything about it. The show need someone that can sing, from what i know, Joy can sing. I dont know about her acting and so lets see the drama and then comment about it.

I can see why SM would push Joy into acting, but please don't start her off with a lead role. She needs experience and time to get over the awkwardness that normally comes when someone first starts acting.

Lee Hyun Woo is unlucky with dramas these days. #KdramaHitForLHW2017

Lets keep our fingers crossed. I still believed there are still great actresses even among idols (for example, we have Eun Ji... we have Eun Ji.. oopps I think Eun Ji is the only one! Lols)

Oh I love Jung Eun ji and she's got the voice too. When it comes to idol actresses who can act, they're Eun ji, Min ah and Nana for me. Also BOA and Uee for the more experienced ones.
Seo hyun jin, Jung ryeo won and Eugene were once idols too and I hope some of the newer idol actresses could rise to these seniors' level.

There are tons of different proven actress they could've picked. But it's done deal so nothing left to do but hope it turns out well. Youth dramas are often either decent or super terrible. Somehow most are the latter where neither the writing or acting ever comes through as genuine or convincing. The only youth dramas I really really loved and which stood out as an exception are Answer Me franchise, Dream High and WLFKBJ. Everything else (including School 2015/2013, Sassy Go, Go, etc) were enjoyable but forgettable IMO.

I adore Lee Hyun-woo - so much that I went through all of Moorim School for him. But I don't want to have to do that again. Please be good drama, and please be a good actress Joy!

I don't know about Joy and her acting but she's my favorite Red Velvet member. I also love her voice; I like it better than Wendy's and Seulgi's. Here's to hoping she'll be good like her label mate Key!

Well now that they're officially cast, I just hope they'll both do well. I was picturing a more mature looking guy for Aki but I trust Lee Hyun Woo's acting and I'm looking forward to how he'll portray him!

As for Joy, I like her well enough but i wish SM would start inexperienced people in supporting roles first! Oh well, she has a nice voice though so no worries about the singing part of this drama.

Kinda hoped she would first do a supporting role first. I mean if she does bad she will get so much hate and she's such a young sweet girl. Anyways since she auditioned and beat other 300 actresses she must have some talent atleast.

Hope this drama has a more rom com feel to it and doesn't lean towards the melo side. It would be fun to see LHW play someone awkward and cute in love :D

Hope Joy does well and can do a drama in the future with Sungjae :) I mean Solim and GongLee couples from WGM also are doing the same so hopefully Sungjoy some day too ;)

Not just the company but the idol too is very greedy for taking a lead role as her first. I've seen a short stint of her acting (a clip where she and someone else acts out Moon Embracing the Sun) and....well I hope she's improved. People like Han Ga In and Suzy get dragged for their lack of acting even with their high presence in the industry and visuals. As an SM idol for whom company power gave her this chance, if she's not good she'll be torn apart and I will have no sympathy for her. Same with Kai only in that case I know for sure he's terrible.

I'm suspecting this has to do with the partnership between SM and Key East where they will partner to create content and borrow each other's actors/idols.

I know SM has wanted to have tons more power in the drama world (like they have in the Kpop world) and it burns them that they have never been able to do so. Out of all the idols they throw acting roles too, Yoona is the only one semi-taken seriously but even then I'm not 100% sure if she really is held in high regard. No one cares about Siwon anymore and D.O has only just started to come up but has a real shot. I know SM has been trying to expand their brand name and actors are considered on a higher wrung than idols, but all of SM's attempts to make their brand and idols feel more public friendly will keep falling on their faces if they're unable to just take things slow.

Nobody said idols shouldn't act but start them off on the appropriate path. EXO's Kai and Red Velvet's Joy do not need a leading role right away, what a joke.

Not true. He's in the military that's why he's been off-radar these days. Give the guy a break! He has perfect comedic timing and reactions, but not really suited for emotional scenes.

I get that you're his fangirl but let's be honest, Siwon is not a big talked about name in the drama world among the actors. He's not a nugu, but Im Siwan probably is more loved by the public in terms of idol actors.

Required fields are marked *

I think Siwon is serving in the military right now so he has no projects? But I really do hope he comes back in a drama. I really like him in She Was Pretty. D.O. is pretty much an actor now, he exudes that kind of aura now.

I hope SM doesn't push their actors too much on acting. There's just a few of them that really does well.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Can't speak for anyone else, but Siwon was definitely a highlight in She Was Pretty and I've enjoyed D.O. in everything I've seen him in (and that was before knowing he was an idol). If this girl participated in a fair audition and won the role, I don't see any reason for complaint until we see what she can do. Not every actor has to work their way up from supporting. The issue with idols moving to lead roles too quickly has more to do with them being handed roles because of backing or name recognition despite having little to no talent.

0

Required fields are marked *

The reason why intelligent actors start from the bottom is because a) they know they won't get hate when they do eventually start snagging lead roles and b) it gives them experience where the pressure is off.

If you're some kind of acting genius then by all means shoot to the leading role but more often then not the lack of experience and patience ends up working against them especially if it's clear they only got their lead role because of their big Kpop company.

Look, I hope Joy does a good job for her sake but I also am upset for other actors and actresses who are GOOD but stuck playing bit parts because PDs want the Hallyu fans watching. Like Kpop fans don't have enough content to binge on.

and kai was getting so much hate for getting a lead role even though he's "kinda" acted before lol

honestly for me, the idol-actor stand out has gotta be D.O and lee sung kyung (i mean her insane psycho bitch scenes in cheese in the trap?? not everyone can pull that off..)

Required fields are marked *

Lee Sung Kyung was never an idol. Only a model. And Cheese in the trap was not her first drama. She actually debuted with a smaller role in It's Okay It's Love, and followed it up in another drama called "Queens Flower".

So yes, she did start small and work her way up to Leading Lady Status which gave the public time to warm up to her and for her to hone her skills.

I don't mind idols working their way up when they do have talent - some idols can act better than trained actors and actresses, - maybe the only way they could break into the industry was with being an idol first.

But idols with little to no acting talent who jump into lead roles give their counterparts a bad name. Truth be told, I personally think that even some experienced idol turned actors/actresses who the public raves about have little onscreen presence like, Choi Minho, Yoona and Suzy. But that's my personal opinion.

For this drama. I think Joy is ok. One of the main reason, it is directed at TvN, the birthplace of idol-actress like Hyeri,Eun Ji, etc. Second, Joy actually passed the audition that consist of 20 actress and 300 idol. Lastly,Sakurako Ohara(movie lead) first role is a lead one, this movie none the lest. It's Lee Hyun Woo i am worried. He does not emit Aki aura.

Even some of Joy's fans don't believe the 'passed the audition' story.

Joy is a popular SM idol, Hyungwoo is from Key East, SM and Key EAst just entered a partnership a few months ago and this news comes fast on the heels of EXO's Kai getting a lead from nothing. Nobody can convince me that she got the role on just her own skills alone when she was nothing to scream at in the few clips I've seen of her, but was apparently so good she beat out 20 actresses and 300 idols? 300 idols really showed up to audition for this role?

I don't know...

Holy sh*t I loved the Japanese movie of this. It has mainstream charm that could get a lot of people hooked.

Joy is perfect for this role. She has a girl next door, upbeat and determined persona that fits Riko, and I watched her on A Hyung I Know where they improvised a whole story, she steals the show. She also has a very special voice judging from her song " The Korean article said she was picked out of 300 females, so I don't know for sure but I have great feeling she will do well.

As for the male lead role of Aki I genuinely don't see Lee Hyun-woo has the same masculine mysteriousness as Takeru Satoh :/ Their images are so different. LHW is a great actor but his baby face has stuck him in teen genre for a lot of his projects since it fits him, but lets see. I'm actually excited. tvN delivers.

eh, this reaction should be expected when idols get cast in lead roles in their first dramas. not saying she can't do it and i do like joy and red velvet, but it makes sense that people would be miffed when these idols are able to get roles over actresses with more experience or established skill mainly because they have better connections. k-netizens and international fans aren't being unfair when they criticize the system of connections beating talent, imo.

LHW is not exactly who I had in mind for this role but I'm not upset about his casting at all. Joy's casting, on the other hand, confuses me to no end because not only is she physically the opposite of what Riko is supposed to look (Joy is tallish, rather full figured, obviously pretty and girlish while Riko is short, super petite, with no curves to speak of, and described as not all that pretty and a tomboy), but she also has the stereotypical high pitch singing voice that most female idols are trained to have, again, completely opposite of what Riko is supposed to sound. I guess not looking exactly like a character is no deal breaker (definitely not for me!) but in this instance I think at least how she is perceived is important. OF COURSE the most off thing is gonna be her voice tho, with her being an idol there's no way they're using someone else to sing her parts and it will leave the audience (me) confused as to how exactly is her voice all that different from the other 10000 idols' voices out there (it ain't). I think other idols fitted the role better, IU is quite an obvious choice but she could have pulled it off, and while Eunji doesn't exactly have Riko's looks she has the deeper-than-normal-idol-singing-voice going for her, but both take only premium works now I guess. They could have also just hired a talented up and coming actress and have someone like Lee Hi dub her singing or something.

I agree that Joy is perhaps not the best choice if ppl use "they want an actress who can also sing". there are better options as you mentioned.

But I guess the reason they did not cast those you mentioned, is because those two idols already have experiences with kind of similar characters in their past dramas (IU with Cindy in Producers; and Eunji in Trot Lover). So, from the drama standpoint, it's not looking very good. And for dramas like this, tvn is known for looking for an actress with little to no experience, as it will do them good in terms of "painting on a blank page".

I was actually thinking of Solar from Mamamoo although I have yet to see her acting. So I cannot give a good judgement. I was also thinking about Kim Go Eun, but that might be too much; she's older (although she played a high schooler in Goblin) and she's too high profile for this drama.

Joy doesnt have a stereotypical high pitch voice. She has a very specific vocal tone.

When she goes deep it's really shocking. It shows in her duet with 2AM Seulong https://youtu.be/0VHX2ovsx6E

Also, her predebut video of her singing Cherry Filters Flying Duck... It reminds me of a Japanese female rock soloist. Idk I just think her voice is fit, but then again I'm an RV fan (Irene is my bias tho).

I know I am probably being unfair here as I did not really take Kai's casting news very well. But since it's tvn show here, like some commenters here, I should just wait and see. Tvn made Answer Me 1997 and 1988 - both had an idol as the female lead. And they did a good job. One of the reasons they did well was it was examples of good casting. They gave out the vibe of the characters they played very well. And there are many similarities between Eunji-Hyeri and Siwon-Deoksun. So, that's probably why they were cast in the first place.

Winning a role after an audition of a few hundred actresses might be a media play of SM avoiding the negative reaction as already happened with Kai's casting news. But it could also be true. Joy probably fit the character the best because she gives the same vibe, or even have a similar personality. If she can work it out like Eunji and Hyeri did, this would be another hit story of tvn finding good idol-actor. If not, well we know what will happen.

I may put too much trust in tvn. lol. but I think, I do it for good reasons.

But it's another age gap relationship with people at different stages in life? A high-school student and if I'm not mistaken, a sound producer who must be in the working world? This is so dispiriting.

Also I love Hyun Woo, but those of you saying all his main co-stars of Moorim were bad actors and he was the sole jewel, are baffling to me. I watched most of the show and Jung Eugene and the woman playing his love interest were actually better than him at acting, even if it was marginal.
