Ji Chang-wook is playing no games to clear his name in Fabricated City

If you already miss seeing Ji Chang-wook (The K2) kicking proverbial butts on your screens, then you’re in luck because his upcoming action flick Fabricated City appears to be jampacked with action, drama, and humor, all of which he’s fully capable of delivering.

Fabricated City is writer/director Park Kwang-hyun’s first feature film in eleven years since his debut award-winning film Welcome to Dongmakgol, which was set during the Korean War and centered around the residents of a remote village who were unaware of the war raging in their country. Fabricated City couldn’t be more dissimilar from Dongmakgol, but I’m all for directors trying their hand at different genres.

In the movie, Ji Chang-wook plays an unemployed, avid gamer named Kwon Yoo, who in just three minutes and sixteen seconds, gets wrongly framed for a murder he didn’t commit. In order to clear his name, he enlists the help of his friends and fellow game enthusiasts to find out the truth that will set him free. His tech-savvy friends are played by Shim Eun-kyung (King of Walking) and Ahn Jae-hong (Answer Me 1988). Although he’s an adept commander and leader in the games he plays, in reality, he’s just an unremarkable, jobless guy, but adopting his fierce game persona in the real world may give him a new sense of power.

Ji Chang-wook reportedly trained for months at an action school in preparation for all the various risky stunts: grand scale car chases, wire action sequences, and various hand-to-hand combat scenes. Director Park Kwang-hyun praised the actor’s impressive emotional range as an actor and action star with excellent adaptability who fully digested his character.

The teaser opens with a city under siege. Military jets swarm the sky, and Ji Chang-wook in army gear gives out orders and fends off enemy attackers. And then we cut to reality: the guy’s at a PC bang and the intense war scene was part of the game he just leveled-up in. He’s asked to return a phone back to its owner, and even though he protests, the owner says she’ll pay him and he reluctantly does as he’s asked. But it seems he’s fallen into a trap and now he’s all over the news, accused of rape and murder and thrown into prison for a lifetime sentence.

We meet Shim Eun-kyung facing numerous computer monitors, analyzing the similarities of all violent crimes. Car chases, explosions, and illuminating screens follow, and we end with Ahn Jae-hong bumbling a crucial move and complicating matters for Ji Chang-wook who’s getting tailed. The copy reads: “A perfect leader in the game world. Became a murderer in 3 minutes and 16 seconds. Someone else is controlling everything. The world they have weaved. We will overturn it! A new world of crime action.”

Fabricated City will premiere in February.

I'm positive it will definitely play at the Vallco AMC Theatre. We get about 98% of the CJ Entertainment productions (of which this is one) screened here in Cupertino. Time for a road trip, ne? :D

I know! But I love it! <3 I saw Ji Chang-wook first and was so surprised when I saw Shim Eun-kyung's name in the tags, that I looked harder at the poster and omg, she looks so badass and cool! I love the look on her and can't wait to see her in this role. I always love it when my favorite actresses play badass, sassy and cool girl roles.

While we love seeing Ji Chang-wook in all his action glory, because, hey, when has that ever been a bad thing ..... I'm starting to get a bit concerned that perhaps he now finds himself in the dreaded "typecasting" zone which may or may not be difficult to get out of.

Of course I'm just speculating and this may not be the situation at all. Whatever the case may be, it's always great to see Ji Chang-wook onscreen in any project of his!

That's why he wants to try other genres and not accept any action roles for the time being. He said in the interviews before & after The K2 he wants to stop doing action (temporarily) and look at other genres, such as romcoms since he never try pure romcom drama.

CW has even complained about doing action roles etc. and being offered those type of roles, as recent as the conference for Seven First Kisses. So I'm hoping whatever he chooses next will be nothing like what he's done before. But he's due for the military this year too, isn't he?

Chang-wook is great and all but why did Shim Eun-kyung get such little screentime in the trailer? I could barely spot her lol. From the screencap, she looks damn good tho

I think because SEK is more like supporting actor, than leading lady. I don't remember there will be loveline between JCW and her and this is pretty much JCW-centric movie.

Omg, this looks and sounds like a hoot! I'm loving the posters already and the cast! Even the funny SNL guy with the big, bulging eyes is in this! Ahaha, love him. This trio looks so much fun! Love love love Shim Eun-kyung's badass and cool girl look in the posters! She's gonna own the role, I can already tell. I never finished Healer and the K2, but I did see Ji Chang-wook's episode in the 7 Kisses "drama," so while I'm now used to seeing him in this type of action-packed genre, this looks like it'll be funny and silly, considering they're all just gamers irl. I'm all for this, but I could really do without the whole "blamed for murder" part because that's so overused.

I can't believe I've waited 11 years for Park Kwang-hyun's second full-length feature. That is actually one year longer than Jang Joon-hwan's hiatus between Save the Green Planet and Hwayi, and Save the Green Planet wasn't anywhere as successful as Welcome to Dongmakgol. Hope Fabricated City won't disappoint us Dongmakgol fans.

I know JCW fans want him to do something different to avoid being type-cast as an action-hero...but it's not too bad being type-cast as an action-hero, given that there aren't that many other Korean actors who can do what he does as well as he does. It's also a much interesting type-case than say...playing a chaebol. Anyways, wishing him all the best with this film. Hope it slays the box office and leaves a lasting impression on the public's mind before his upcoming military service.

guys. this was filmed before the k2. i dont know why people say he is again doing action. he said he wont do action for the time being and he hasnt. by the way based on wht i see in the trailer it seems his role has different angles so while he is doing action he is also an underdog which shows his role has different layers

The trailer looks really interesting ! The visual effects look very good . JCW can do action well and is also talented at portraying various emotions. Shim Eun Kyung looks very different from her usual images. I can't wait to watch this movie.

YASS It's finally here! Not really for us waiting for the subs, but I'm glad the movie looks so good with an amazing cast to boot. This is a mashup of Healer and K2. No complaints though.
I hope Ji Chang-wook does a drama before he enlists!
