Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: Episode 12
by LollyPip
Even the promise of romance can sometimes feel awkward, especially when it’s not clear whether you’re friends, or dating, or something else entirely. Joon-hyung is desperate to prove himself to Bok-ju, but he’s got to be careful if he doesn’t want to scare her off. And when push comes to shove, caring for someone isn’t about things like flowers and fireworks — it’s about being the support that person needs in the most difficult times.
EPISODE 12: “Her bucket list”
Bok-ju follows the strange noise to the dorm kitchen, where she sees a girl in a nightgown, mindlessly eating everything in the fridge. The girl turns and Bok-ju sees that it’s Shi-ho, looking dazed and very ill.
Startled, Bok-ju asks what she’s doing, and Shi-ho seems to come back to herself. She looks at the pile of half-eaten food in her lap as if seeing it for the first time, and nervously heads back to their dorm room. She jumps in bed and hides under the covers, ignoring Bok-ju when she asks if she’s okay.
Bok-ju goes back to their room in the morning, and Shi-ho acts as if nothing happened. Bok-ju asks if she remembers last night, and Shi-ho says breezily that she’s been sleepwalking lately. But when she turns away her face drops, as if she’s not exactly telling the truth.
When Bok-ju asks if she’s okay and mentions the ghost rumors, Shi-ho’s voice goes hard. She tells Bok-ju to worry about herself, then leaves. She goes to the bathroom and thinks about the times she’s sleepwalked, and looks up the side effects of sleeping pills. Oh no, that’s not good.
Bok-ju runs into Joon-hyung and Tae-kwon on her way out of the dorm, and Tae-kwon gets all excited to see her, grabbing her hand tightly. Joon-hyung is adorably focused on the fact that Tae-kwon is touching Bok-ju, and he smacks Tae-kwon’s hand. Bok-ju starts to say something to Joon-hyung, and he has to shoo the oblivious Tae-kwon away.
Once alone, Bok-ju asks if Joon-hyung has seen Shi-ho lately. She starts to tell him what happened last night, but remembers Shi-ho telling her not to be so nosy, and changes her mind.
Joon-hyung suddenly starts hollering, and distracts Bok-ju long enough to slip her wallet back into her bag. Then he just acts like nothing happened, hee. He reminds Bok-ju that she agreed to try dating him for a month before she decides whether or not to return him, and asks if she wants to hang out later. He grabs her face, making her worry that he’s going to kiss her again, but he’s just teasing her and he says he’ll call her later.
The college gets a three-day break, and Coach Yoon tells his team to spend the break stuffing their faces and eating whatever they want. The gymnasts’ coach informs the girls that they’re all on a diet. The swim team is instructed to rest, and Joon-hyung has to leave his shorts behind to escape Tae-kwon’s clutches.
Bok-ju acts annoyed when Joon-hyung texts that he’s coming to pick her up, but she spends a long time primping at the mirror. Her dad comes in looking for Uncle Dae-ho, who’s been gone a lot lately, and Dad seems as if he’s not feeling well. Bok-ju is worried his dialysis isn’t working as well as it used to, but Dad says he’s fine.
Bok-ju finds Joon-hyung outside and complains, and he flusters her by saying that there’s nothing strange about meeting his girlfriend in front of her house. She counters that they’re just friends, though when Dad steps outside she grabs Joon-hyung in a headlock and drags him off. LOL.
Joon-hyung says he’s free all day, and asks what Bok-ju wants to do. He remembers her wish to go to an amusement park on a weekday, but she’s feeling cranky and grouches that it’s a childish idea. He pesters Bok-ju until she agrees, but then she remembers that she’s supposed to hang out with Seon-ok and Nan-hee later.
In order to get Bok-ju to the amusement park, Joon-hyung has to allow her to invite her friends, and the poor guy looks like he wants to cry at losing his chance to be alone with her. It gets even worse when he finds out that Nan-hee invited Tae-kwon, and aww, Tae-kwon looks happy to see Seon-ok.
The group crowds into a store selling cute headbands, and Joon-hyung swats off the one with devil horns that Tae-kwon puts on him. Then Bok-ju finds one with a fluffy white halo, and Tae-kwon puts on the devil horns and says they look like a couple. Joon-hyung nearly snatches his head off grabbing the devil horns back, desperately insisting that they belong to him and him only.
The viking ship ride makes Joon-hyung turn more than a little green, though the rest of the group have a great time. The next ride Bok-ju chooses goes upside down and spins (urk), but nobody else wants to ride it, so Joon-hyung valiantly agrees to go just to be alone with her.
Tae-kwon points out that Joon-hyung is afraid of heights, but Joon-hyung claims that he came to ride that ride, and must go on it immediately. They split up, and Joon-hyung is excited to have Bok-ju to himself, but he looks scared again when the ride starts. He screams like a giant baby through the whole thing, but he makes it out alive.
He goes to get some snacks, and remembers Bok-ju’s wish to share a drink with two straws with a boyfriend. He brings one back to the table, and the moment Bok-ju leans down to take a drink he ducks down too, and they come face to face.
Bok-ju’s heart thumps to see Joon-hyung so close, and he smiles at her and asks if her heart is fluttering. She mutters that he’s crazy, saying she was just startled, but the look on her face proves her lie.
Back at the dorm, Shi-ho is unable to fall asleep, and she reaches for her bottle of sleeping pills. She remembers a call she made to a doctor, who recommended she stop taking the pills and come in for a checkup, and she tosses the pills in the garbage.
Nan-hee calls Bok-ju to meet up with the group for the fireworks show. It starts before they find their friends, and Joon-hyung take advantage of the moment to fulfill another of Bok-ju’s wishes. He takes her hand in his, and tucks it into his jacket.
Bok-ju stares at him, stunned, and he asks if her heart is fluttering again. His teasing is a little too overwhelming and she snaps at him, and yanks her hand back. She calls him annoying, and goes off to look for their friends. Joon-hyung berates himself for pushing too hard when Bok-ju was already feeling uncomfortable.
They rejoin the group, and everyone takes out their phones to take pictures of the fireworks. Joon-hyung snaps a picture of Bok-ju’s face when she’s not paying attention. So cute. He decides to take a chance, and slips his hand into Bok-ju’s coat pocket with her hand.
Bok-ju’s heart thumps again, and this time she doesn’t pull her hand away. She looks up to see Joon-hyung staring at her in that utterly smitten way of his, and she can’t tear her eyes away.
Bok-ju goes to her piano lessons the next day, and her instructor says she’s too aggressive with the instrument. Bok-ju gets frustrated, wondering why she can’t manage to play correctly. She grumbles that Joon-hyung hasn’t called her all day.
Nan-hee calls Bok-ju, and says that Seon-ok hasn’t come back from their short vacation. She thinks Seon-ok isn’t able to leave home for some reason, so Bok-ju decides to go see her. Dad mentions that he’s going to dialysis later, but that Dae-ho is out again.
Bok-ju finds Seon-ok’s parents’ motel, and goes inside to find Seon-ok practicing her weightlifting lifts. Seon-ok goes to help some customers, and tells Bok-ju to wait for her in the office.
When she returns, Seon-ok tells Bok-ju that her parents want her to drop out of school, since there’s not much money in weightlifting as a profession. She says she doesn’t know what to do, but that she thinks she doesn’t have any real weightlifting talent.
She tells Bok-ju that her nickname in high school was Weightlifting Ghost, because she never left the gym. But she admits that it wasn’t that she loved weightlifting so much; she just didn’t want to go home, but ended up falling in love with the sport. Seon-ok adds that she envies Bok-ju, who has talent and a father who supports her.
Bok-ju’s father doesn’t look well during his dialysis, and afterward, he’s sweating and his nose begins to bleed. He staggers out to the hallway, where he sinks to the floor, unconscious.
Joon-hyung is busy working on another of Bok-ju’s wishes — to receive a bouquet of one hundred roses from a boyfriend. He buys a massive bouquet of red roses and calls Bok-ju, who says she’s about to take the bus home. He finds out which bus she’s on, and goes to the station to surprise her.
Uncle Dae-ho has made himself comfortable at the salon where Coach Choi is working, and by the look on her face, he’s driving her bonkers. After work he takes her by the arm and starts planning their evening, but Coach Choi pries her arm away. She starts to say she can’t date him, but Coach Yoon calls her to meet with him and she doesn’t finish her thought.
Coach Yoon says that he’s still talking to the school about getting Coach Choi’s job back, and she asks about Bok-ju’s break. Ha, Dae-ho’s tagged along, and Coach Yoon asks when they got so close. Dae-ho starts to say they’re dating, but Coach Choi interrupts and says they’re drinking buddies. Whoa, ouch. Dae-ho notices how attentive Coach Choi is to Coach Yoon, and that’s a second blow.
On the bus ride home, Bok-ju thinks about how Seon-ok said that she came to love weightlifting, and how much she envies Bok-ju. Bok-ju thinks back to a year ago, when she’d first mastered the clean-and-jerk, and how good she’d felt.
She takes a call from the hospital, and when she finally arrives at the station where Joon-hyung is waiting with his ridiculously huge bouquet, she’s frantic to get to the hospital to see her father. Joon-hyung tries to keep her calm and says that the doctors are probably helping him, and takes her to see him.
Bok-ju is frantic, running from room to room checking the names on the doors, and it’s Joon-hyung who calmly asks a nurse where to find Dad. He leads Bok-ju to the right room, and she runs inside without giving Joon-hyung another thought. He opens the door for the equally panicked Dae-ho, and stands in the hall, looking sadly at the roses.
Thank goodness that despite Bok-ju’s and Dae-ho’s hysterics, Dad looks weak and tired but he says he’s going to be fine. The doctor says he’s not critical, but that it’s time to start thinking about getting him a kidney transplant.
Jae-yi and Dr. Go have dinner with some old school friends, who tease that they should just get married already. Jae-yi says that friends don’t get married, and Dr. Go pouts that she got rejected.
Another pair of classmates joins them, and Jae-yi goes stiff when he sees the woman, Hwan-hee (cameo by Seohyun). When he goes to the restroom later, he comes out to find Hwan-hee waiting for him, and she says nervously that he looks exactly as she remembers.
Hwan-hee suddenly leaves when the man Hwan-hee came with, Sang-gu, joins them. Sang-gu doesn’t say a word to Jae-yi, but he glares at him and gives him a shoulder-check as he passes.
Sang-gu gets mouthy after a few drinks, and when Jae-yi refuses to have any more drinks himself, Sang-gu says he was always nice, and popular with women. He turns to Hwan-hee to ask if Jae-yi is still her type, which makes her look incredibly uncomfortable.
Sang-gu slings an arm around her shoulders and says that he never can tell if Hwan-hee hates him, or just can’t get over Jae-yi. Jae-yi tries to leave but Sang-gu grabs his wrist and says that Hwan-hee will be upset if he goes so soon.
Jae-yi pries Sang-gu’s hand off his arm, and says softly that he’ll regret doing this tomorrow. Sang-gu says he’s just being honest, and asks Hwan-hee if she didn’t come all the way to Seoul to see Jae-yi. She tries to get him to leave, but Sang-gu grabs her roughly. It pushes Jae-yi too far, and he punches Sang-gu’s lights out.
Dr. Go follows Jae-yi out of the restaurant and patches up his hand. She says Jae-yi should have avoided Sang-gu, and wonders what got him so upset that he lost his temper. She asks if Jae-yi still has feelings for Hwan-hee, and sees through his weak lie that he doesn’t.
Dr. Go says that she’s tired of seeing Jae-yi so hung up on his first love, that he still can’t date anyone else. Jae-yi doesn’t respond, and Dr. Go asks if he’ll ever consider her. Jae-yi looks surprised, and Dr. Go says that she hasn’t stayed so close to him for ten years just because of friendship.
Jae-yi is genuinely surprised to hear of Dr. Go’s interest, and she knows that means he’s never once thought about dating her. She says that she’s tired of liking him on her own, and decides it’s time to stop.
Dae-ho decides to stay the night with Dad, and they both urge Bok-ju to go home. She doesn’t want to leave, and decides to head downstairs to get Dad some things he’ll need, like tissues. She steps out of the room, and in the hallway she finds Joon-hyung gone, and a bag with the exact items she was planning on getting for her dad.
She goes home, and sees that Joon-hyung has been here too. He left a sign in front of the restaurant saying that they’re closed for the afternoon, and Bok-ju amends it to say that they’ll be closed for a few days.
She goes to Dad’s room to get him some clothes, and in his drawer she finds a bunch of insurance policies, with Bok-ju as the beneficiary of all of them. She starts to cry, especially when she sees the holes in his clothes, wondering why he spent all his money on the insurance policies instead of on himself.
Bok-ju calls Dad, who’s still awake despite the late hour. She says in a wobbly voice that she’s sorry for everything — for making him worry, and being rude to him. Dad says he’s more sorry, for making her do weightlifting, and for turning their home into a chicken restaurant.
But mostly, Dad says he’s sorry that she grew up without a mother. Bok-ju cries that that’s not his fault, but he apologizes anyway. He wishes Bok-ju goodnight, and hangs up. He and Bok-ju are sobbing, and even Uncle Dae-ho wipes away tears, having heard Dad’s side of the conversation.
A disheveled Coach Yoon arrives at the gym in the morning to find Bok-ju there, mopping the floor. She brightly tells him she’s back for winter training, and he looks thrilled to see her smiling again.
The rest of the team show up for practice, and they’re clearly just as happy to see Bok-ju. Nan-hee grabs onto Bok-ju and wails that she’s been lonely without Bok-ju and Seon-ok. Bok-ju says that Seon-ok probably won’t be back for a while, and they cry together.
Shi-ho isn’t performing well in practice, barely able to stay awake, and her coach warns her that if she doesn’t stop making rookie mistakes, she may not be sent to the next round of competition.
Jae-yi thinks about Dr. Go and how she asked if he’s ever thought of her romantically. Hwan-hee calls him to apologize for Sang-gu’s behavior and says that she’s never apologized to him properly for what happened between them. Jae-yi accepts her apologies, and wishes her well.
That night, Shi-ho takes out her sleeping pills again, and starts to take one. She thinks about her coach’s warning, and takes another. Oh no, that seems like a very bad idea.
Bok-ju calls Dad to tell him that she’s going back to weightlifting. He hollers down the phone that she always does the opposite of what he says, but he can’t hide his big happy grin when he hangs up.
Bok-ju sits in the empty gym, looking around like she did when she decided to leave. But this time she’s reminded of everything she loves about weightlifting, and she’s happy and energized.
She calls Joon-hyung to ask him to meet with her to talk, and he runs to see her. Before she goes, she slips into her dorm room, and puts up her hair in her red bow clip. You go, girl! It’s snowing by the time Joon-hyung finds Bok-ju, and the first thing he asks about is her father. Bok-ju says he’s okay, and thanks Joon-hyung for helping her get to her father at the hospital.
Bok-ju excitedly tells Joon-hyung that she came back to school, and he’s thrilled. She says that when she got back to the school today, he was the first thing she thought of. With a big grin, she says, “Joon-hyung-ah. I’ve decided not to return you. I’ll keep you.” Eep!
Joon-hyung is struck uncharacteristically silent, and Bok-ju adds, “I think I like you, too. No. I like you.” She says that she’s still not sure exactly what her feelings mean, but decides, “Whether as a friend or as a man, I want you by my side.” She adds that she wants him to continue calling her name, and that he can call her Bok-ju or Chubs, and Joon-hyung stops her with a quick kiss.
Bok-ju smiles, then grabs Joon-hyung’s face. Oh, he’s in for it now. She plants a big ol’ kiss on him, then decides she likes it and does it again. She lets go, but Joon-hyung isn’t about to let her back away, and he wraps his arms around her tightly.
Joon-hyung leans down and gives Bok-ju a real kiss, full of promise. She melts into him and hugs him back, and they stand in the falling snow, smiling at each other.
COMMENTS
Well that’s it, I’m toast. I’m actually crying with happiness right now. This show, and this couple, are now officially my favorites of the year, hands-down, maybe even my favorites of all time. They make me feel joy just watching them fall in love. I thought Joon-hyung’s confession was the sweetest thing ever, until Bok-ju confessed right back, and now I’m just a puddle of mush. And those kisses, I just have no words for how wonderful they were. I loved that Bok-ju and Joon-hyung were smiling through it all, just happy and enjoying their moment. I even loved that Bok-ju was wearing her red hairpin, signifying that her feelings for Jae-yi are finished and that now it’s Joon-hyung who makes her feel glad to be a woman.
But this show is about many kinds of love, and I also enjoyed the focus on the love between Bok-ju and her family, small and unusual though they may be. Bok-ju’s father is everything to her, since her mother has been gone a very long time, and we’ve seen over and over how much they love each other. Even when Dad gets angry with Bok-ju, he always has her best interests at heart, and when he makes mistakes he’s not afraid to admit them and apologize, and try to make it right. I loved how he supported Bok-ju’s need to take some time and discover what she really wanted, and this episode really highlighted how Dad sacrifices himself for his daughter’s sake. Those insurance policies really got me in the gut — Dad would rather wear clothes with holes in them, and make sure that his little girl is provided for in case his illness takes him from her.
I just can’t get over how much Joon-hyung is focused on Bok-ju, and how much he seems to revolve around her like her own personal moon whenever they’re together. The way he looks at her, takes care of her, thinks about her before himself is just wonderful. I feel like I’ve said this so many times, but he just keeps upping his game, and he really pulled out all the stops to show Bok-ju that he’s sincere about liking her. I may not love the way he obtained her bucket list, but it was so cute how determined he was to make all those things happen for her. And the way he looked at her during the fireworks, oh my goodness, I’m sure Bok-ju felt like the fireworks were going off in her own heart. How could she not like a boy who obviously adores her so much?
But the real turning point for Bok-ju was when Joon-hyung threw away the list and did exactly what she needed when her father became sick. Ticking down a list is sweet, but supporting her when her whole world feels like it’s crashing down is what real love is made of. It’s easy to be there for someone when things are going well, but how a person behaves during the bad times truly shows who they are. Joon-hyung was willing to step back and let Bok-ju have the space she needed in that time, so that she could focus on her father, and he didn’t get upset that she forgot about him for a little while. Instead, he went that one step further to bring her father some little necessities, even when he was the last thing on Bok-ju’s mind. I thought the moment when he was alone in the hospital hallway, looking at the giant bouquet of roses and realizing that those things don’t signify real commitment, was a huge moment for Joon-hyung. If there were any part of me that worried that Joon-hyung’s feelings for Bok-ju aren’t a true, mature love, they disappeared in that instant.

How kickass would it be to have Seo Kang-joon cameo as Bok-joo's piano tutor? Baek In-ha could surely use some help, and Baek In-ho is a talented pianist...

It would be awesome - but only of he kept coming up with reasons to unseat BJ and played the piano himself, over and over and over...so much piano playing...

Bahahahahaha! Or, the piano can get rid of him too and start playing automatically! Over and over again, until the Truck of Doom shows up and finishes the show! Oh wait, this is not CITT! Forget what I've said

This show is Amortentia...I can't stop feeling contented! I had a silly grin on my face long after the show was over.???
They smiled while kissing! Now THAT is one happy couple in love! These kids do romance better than all the adults in kdramas.
Dad and his torn clothes...poor uncle silently crying...Seon-ok... first I cried like a baby then squeed like a bat on drugs. This show will make me bipolar.
Jaeyi you poor thing. Did your unfulfilled first love break you inside? Is that why you're always too nice but distant? Someone or something should happen to make him feel again...not just happiness but all emotions.

LMAO!!!!
That's the one thing I worry about in dramas now. I reflect on my poor life out of too much coat envy!! Like how can they own so many coats. I think the first thing that made me fall in love with Park Hae Jin's character in MLFAS before anything else, was his coats.
My, if I could raid his coats collection! And he looks mightily good in them that I'd return them back to him so that I could look at him in his glorious coated self.

It's ridiculous how good this week's episodes were. By the end of this one I was making noises that were probably only audible to animals. Cosigning all of your comments, Lollypip!
I love how natural and poignant the symbolism is in this show - the coffee cups between Jae-yi and Bok-ju were my favourite example last week, and this week it was the flowers. The 100 roses are the last of the "tips" from Bok-ju's ill-gotten bucket list, none of which worked out for Joon-hyung the way he wanted them to (and I'm glad they didn't, since he came by them dishonestly). The bouquet was kind of his last ditch effort and the one he hoped would really seal the deal and convince her, but that cliched gesture was completely set aside in the seriousness of rushing to Bok-ju's father in the hospital.
And yet the bag of necessities he left at the hospital room door was so much more moving to Bok-ju than the forgotten bouquet of roses would have been - truly breaking down the last of Bok-ju's resistance to the idea of them together, or perhaps her embarrassment about admitting her feelings. I've always felt that one of the obstacles between them was Joon-hyung's tendency to obfuscate his sincerity by teasing her, often going too far and hurting her feelings, in a self-protective mechanism that didn't allow her to take his attentions seriously. But this was a small yet powerful way of letting her know that he's there for her no matter what, and I think she finally realized how important he's been in her life this whole time, and completely opened her heart to him at last. And you know once Kim Bok-ju lets you into your heart, she's all in and yours for good. <3
The silent exchange of cliched grand gesture for sincere care is such a great metaphor for their relationship, which eschews the grand but empty gestures we often think we want (even Bok-ju, as evidenced by her list) for the real stuff of understanding, trust, intimacy and sacrifice. I also adore that it' was done in such an understated, quiet way, like every other little moment between our OTP that, put together, add up to real true love and not the kind we are normally told to swoon over.
I love it, I love it, I love it. Squeeing forever.

Loved what you said about the little moments adding up to true love. Can't agree enough. This is the very thing I find impressive about this drama, that the issues they show us are simple enough, yet not every drama can grab audiences' hearts and make them fall in love along with the characters. There's also cohesiveness in the storytelling that i haven't seen in other currently airing dramas as well.

My crazy cheeks, why you keep blushing when they stared each other under the fireworks.
And then I cried along with her when she found all that insurance policies in her father room.
And then my heart flutter again when they meet under the snow.
Ooh and that 'mmmmhh' sound when she kiss him the second time really crack me up. It's like emphasizing Bok Joo amateurism in the romantic field. Hahahaha
Show.. I love you..
Credit to Lee Sung Kyung, I've completely forgot all of her roles before.

Bokjoo’s dad. You are awesome. I thk part of bokjoo’s wonderful personality come from dad and her dad’s tireless effort to give her the best environment to grow up. She might not have a mother and they arent rich but her dad’s love is just so encompassing and selfless. That phone call when they both took time to apologize, gem n rare esp since bokjoo’s dad is gruff most of the time. Putting her dad in side byside comparison with seon ok’s mum and shi ho’s mum and you cant help feeling sorry for them. Its true we shouldnt compare. Evyone else family background and situation isnt the same. But if only their parents took the time to understand their children’s difficulty and stress and be that more suportive, the outcome for their child’s happiness and success would be different

The problem is parents are human too and sometimes give in to the bitterness and hurt and get swallowed up in it.
I love Bok Joo's dad for being such a stoic and uncompromisingly loving father but I don't think any less of Seon-ok's parents or Shi-ho's parents because again, some people lose sight of what the end goal is. Like Seon-ok's parents wanting her to move back and help the business. I feel like they've lost sight of the goal of raising kids, to raise their station from their origin instead of dragging them back into working a for money without the emotional payoff.
Shi-ho's parents are much the same, they put these expectations on their children that because I'm doing so much to keep you in this school, you need to be the next celebrity sports star.
It's not realistic that everyone will perform at the same level even if they put in the same amount of work but for parents that give up a chunk of their lives for their kids can't always see that when they see others succeeding while they're still stuck waiting for the payoff. It's so realistic but so sad to see.
Interestingly, it definitely helps that Bok Joo is so good at weightlifting and so consistently successful in her sport so her father get that payoff in seeing her shine. That's not to say that he would be disappointed in her were she struggling to win competitions but like with Shi ho, she came from a place of having seen success but with it came higher and higher expectations that she struggled to meet. In that, she got burdened with more grief from her family that sees her struggle as a failing on her part and can't/won't support her emotionally when she needs it. What results is an extremely bitter and isolated girl that lashes out in ridiculous fashion and can't/won't let herself be vulnerable to anyone.
Sorry for writing an essay lol.

I can't HELP but think less of Seon Ok's mother.
That lady was flat rude and you can see how much it hurts Seon Ok.
I get that everyone has their own troubles, but she does not seem like a good person who is just under stress and ground down by her troubles - she seems awful.
And the 'weightlifting ghost' story makes it pretty clear that it's been that way for a long time, if not forever.

Migrate to Joonhyung. Haha this guy is bringing his A game to woo Bokjoo and im so happy for bokjoo. She deserves to be pursued and pursue he did. Hes so cute trying to turn on the charm and electrify our poor girl. But hes still such a tease. I thk if he didnt tease her she wouldnt have pulled away her hand the first time. For me the most romantic scenes are the hand scene. 10 fingers interlocked is so sweet. So cute that aft she pulled away he mumbles to himself if he was too forward. Then the next second he puts his hand into her pocket. I can wax poetry on and on that scene they stare at each other in their own world though their friends are right beside them. And its as bokjoo says before, joon hyung’s eyes twinkle twinkle as he gazed at her.
And the scene where he rode the viking ride at amusement park, nam joo hyuk is only half acting, hes really scared.. saw that in celebrity bros a reality show he partook with jisoo.
Lastly thankyou mbc and WF production team, what a wonderful christmas gift for viewers and also the swaag fairies who prayed fervently for kiss scenes. Those who bet on ep 11 and those who bet on ep 12, both are winners!

I forgot to mention how joonhyung won me over for being so thoughtful.
When bokjoo delivered chicken he notice she was tired but when his idea to give her time to rest backfire, he hunt down Bok chicken to pay for it to appa anonymously.
When she was upset he remembered her love for sausage and bought it for her.
When she was word bullied by men he defended her honor with his fist even though at the time they werent close yet
When she was unsure he gave her a confidence boost and cheer for her
When she needed a ear hes there to listen and not judge
When she belittles herself and her achievement he upright calls her out on it n tells her hes disappointed as a fellow sportstudent
When her dad was admitted and she was scared hes the calm presence reassuring her, getting her to the hospital room and bought all the necessities required. Even though it wasnt the day he imagined as he had over a big bouquet of roses to give her, he gav her space n quietly left.
And while she needed time for her family and sort herself out hes there patiently waiting
Joonhyung ar, no wonder Bokjoo wants to keep you

Awwww I absolutely loved this episode. Seriously the phone call between Bok Joo and her father made me tear up so much!!
This is the drama I look forward to all week long even though I'm following and enjoying TLOTBS and Goblin. Like I honestly wish it was a Mon-Tues drama because I think it wouldn't have been crushed in ratings but either way even before I watch any other show I watch this one first raw and again with subs.
I love JH's approach to Bok Joo, how much he cares for her above all. It's not a "I want to date you, pay attention to me!" feeling. It's truly a "F--- the gorgeous roses I bought for you, right now you need to be with your dad and I'm just going to do what I can without demanding your attention"
Seriously, it's so great to watch.
Let's not forget Bok Joo being such a sweetheart, going to visit Seon-ok to check up on her, never taking for granted her friends or family, giving her all in everything and just being an honest lovely girl that's true to herself.
I may be one of the few but I enjoy JY and Dr. Go. I mean as far as them being a couple, I hope it's done organically but I don't see what's so wrong about her. Yeah, she may not have pushed JY one way or another but their friendship isn't a mirror of JH and BJ. I like her. I think the only reason she protested the punch was because of her fixation on his feeling for his ex particularly when she (albeit jokingly) gets "rejected" by JY yet again. It's not like she's condoning the abuse particularly, it's just that she's feeling the weariness of liking a guy who's probably not dealt with his own feelings for his ex or put closure on it because he's too busy being nice and cheerful all the time and putting on a strong front. I love JY for it but it definitely puts an emotional distance between him and everyone else.
Anywho, can't wait till next week :)

It's been forever since the last k-drama (scratch that, show) made me feel this way. This show is easily becoming my all time fav in k-drama land ever.
The chemistry between the leads is off the charts. Love her, love him, love them together. This episode specifically sends me off straight into another world, where everything is good and everything is hopeful.
Santa is sure getting lots of "a Jung Joon Hyung boyfie please" wishes this year. No surprise there though, kid is sure going down as one of best written male character in kdrama imo. Hats off to NJH tho', I would have never expected this level of acting skill judging from his previous works. LSK too is killing it as the awkward, adorable, endearing KBJ.
Both of their confession has got to be one of the loveliest thing ever. Love that BJ never took JH's caring gestures for granted and has repeatedly acknowledged and expressed how grateful she is to him. They are just pure relationship goals. For once in k-drama land, the right guy got the right girl.
We still have 4 eps to go, I hope the show delivers exactly what it is delivering right now. And even if it doesn't, I won't be agonizing too much either. Show has been so good and I'll just take this episode right here as that perfect alternative ending and will always be over the moon with the image of JH and BJ lovingly smiling at each other into the future.
This show deserves so much more love and exposure in its hoem country. A shame tbh, SK is sleeping on such an overall feel good feel hopeful drama.

So much cute today!! Jealous Joon Hyung is cuter than Hwashin. Lol
I have a complaint though.. I was hoping they weren't going for the transplant route.
"Dialysis doesn't work like it used too" This statement isn't true. A better way to put it is if Bok Joo's dad has been skipping dialysis treatment. Kidney Transplant is also an option...which can be considered even before he started dialysis.
Even the dr diagnosis made me rolled eyes..if the translation was correct.
My mom undergoes dialysis 3 times a week for 3 years now. I'm writing this beside her bedside now waiting for the 4 hours to go by....

Omoooo I was waiting very patiently last night till I got asleep and... tadaaaa!! I woke up in the morning and you are partying! It is already 167+ comments!! Daebak, suuuwaaaeeeeggg mates! hahaha
I love everyting in this episode! The most memorable ones:
1. JH - BJ reactions after the first kiss. hahaha they were being awkward and BJ got no idea what to do and got angry to HJ instead.
2. Overall scenes in the amusement park! Omooo it was hilarious when they were on the rides. BJ and JH's reactions are gold and priceless!!! Then my heart got flustered on firework and one-cup-two-straws scene. As you have pointed out, JH's gaze is killing!!
3. Is anyone wondering how the mad swing scene was taken? wooaaah it must be very hard. Just look at the extreme ride and I've already felt butterflies on my tummy.
4. BJ's convo with Dad. I was crying along BJ. Everytime she cries, I cry along her. LSK is sooooo goooooood.
5. BJ's confession in the end. They are soo sweeeeeet I could get diabetes.
Looking forward to the next episodes! :D

Now I'm mad at WFKBJ for potentially ruining other dramas that i watch with their amazing, well written romance. Now everytime i see male leads do something cliche or act like a man child without consideration to their female's feelings i will always think "why can't you be more like joonhyung?". And everytime time a female lead cries because of her hardship or because someone insulted her, BUT SHE'S NOT DOING ANYTHING TO RESOLVE HER OWN PROBLEM! I will always say "why can't you be more like bokjoo?" and sigh..

I probably the only one who feels that the drama is going nowhere,
like something that warm and fuzzy but not lasting experience, it just there and good they are having the time of their life,
but that just it,
I thought everyone rave because it's magical,
it's an ordinary story of highschool which is probably why Kdrama viewers rave since they hardly have it,
but then it just okay,
no substance

I understand that everyone has different taste, and I respect that you have yours, but I'd hardly call this an ordinary story of high school, considering, for starters, they're in college. If anything, I think the way it's so "ordinary" is what makes it "extraordinary". It's so refreshingly when drama writers write realistic characters you can relate to, understand and grow with. I think that's a big factor why the Reply series is popular as well, because you either know someone like that or you are someone like that, also its the universiality of first love and how earnest and simple it is that I think really speaks to viewers. However, I'd still like to say that the story actually has a lot of substance, they deal with a lot of mundane but important issues, in a healthy manner that is often not dealt with or done poorly in kdramas. I mean, not every kdrama has to have some killer on the loose, or some evil politician plotting against you, or sci-fi elements to be entertaining. Sometimes, people just want to watch something light and fluffy, something with heart, that will make you laugh and cry with the characters, and make you feel all the feels. Especially when it's so well written, and so rarely done so, it truly is nothing less than magical.

To add on: I think this drama tackles on the different forms of parental support and mental health issues (that are still a stigma in lots of countries), which I think is super important and crucial, especially for the younger viewers. The drama actually explores it as just something that people have to deal with in life not some crazy, dramatic change, problem, or turn of event as some other dramas have portrayed mental illness to be.
These reasons alone make me feel that this drama is extraordinary and in no way substance-less.

It's a slice of life drama that people can relate to. It has plenty of substance. Might not be your taste, but it's obviously going somewhere. We are there to follow BJ and friends as they grow, pursue their dream, deal with hardships and fall in love. It tackles everything from mental health to parental love. I love it. It's refreshing.

Substance is subjective from one person to another. And for me, the substance of this show is that it shows us that no man is an island, people around us affects us in many more ways than we can imagine. The difference between Shi Ho and Bok Joo stems from the people they surround themselves with, chosen or not.
Bok Joo has the full support of her Dad, she loves weightlifting and when she felt a lose of motivation, Dad and coach encouraged her find herself. Shi Ho's family has gotten real unfunctional because one parent supports her and the other doesn't and when she hit the same brickwall the Bok Joo did, she could not tell anybody because her Coach is awful and her parents already have so much on their plate.
In real life, some of us are Bok Joo, and some of us are Shi Ho.
This show gives as a glimpse of real life, real relationships, real challenges and growth, it doesn't sideline issues and tells us that we can never run away from them, aside from the romance (which doesn't really hurt and is really done with realism), that is this shows substance.

The drama is about having dreams and pursuing them, how being with true friends can make every ordeal bearable, but that ultimately we all make our own choices and decisions that will affect our future; also the importance of family as one's main support system. I don't know about you, but I for one thinks these are pretty good measure of substance. Also, the show IS a romcom youth drama so no one is expecting some complicated-conspiracy-of-the-cross-country-variety-i-dunno out of it.

The moment in the last scene when KBJ looks at JH with so much joy and happiness in her eyes- that's right there is what makes a drama ! or in that fireworks scene, when JH looks at KBJ with so much adoration in his eyes- my 32 year old heart fluttered, too! NJK, are you in love with LSK?!! where did you learn to look at someone with so much love in your eyes? Arrghhhh OTP in every sense this two!
The confession and kiss scene was so pure and innocent and full of love that it took my breath away. I have watched many K-dramas but this one made me fall in love with young love<3
I agree that I wasn't a biggest fan of peeking through wallet but at the same time I know He is still so young and had this boyish mischevious side ,too - so I kinda understood. But then his being ever so supportive during the time of need- dude ,you're not boyfriend goal; You're someone to spend the whole life with <3 I can go on and on about how much I love this drama. I did't quite know how can I thank this amazing cast and team for such wonderful work- I just tweeted NJK saying how amazing he is as JH ( and I don't even follow celebs) lol didn't know what else to do.

The entire drama has been a delight but this episode was my favorite. I laughed at their amusement park antics (how cute is Nam Joo Hyuk with those devil horns, though?!), shed tears for Bok Joo and her father, and felt elation during the romantic interactions.
And honestly, I'm glad Jae Yi decked the guy, he was a jerk and though I don't condone to physical violence, this out of character behavior will hopefully help him grow as a person. Being kind is so important, but disagreements and the communication that results from it are just as crucial.
Seohyun is gorgeous! Anyways I adore this drama.

Talk about Seohyun...I confessed I thought she was terrible in Moon Lovers. Didn't help that I couldn't understand or stand her character in that drama.
Yet, I thought she looked beautiful and played this cameo very nicely.
I didn't like Ji Soo in Moon Lovers too. I've always like Ji Soo but that drama was the only one which made me think less of his acting. I was back to liking him in Fantastic but really, Weightlifting Fairy seems to make everyone shine :D
NJH was actually the best out of the princes besides KHN and LJK. His story wasn't well written but I thought he made it worked better than it should. Now, he is da bomb in this show!

This show restored my love for kdramas.
Over the last couple of years, I got increasingly dissatisfied with kdramas. Sure, there were a couple of gems but it felt like sitting for hours and hours just to derive a little enjoyment.
It didn't help that my taste often ran contrary to the majority. Shows which people were crazy over and/or highly rated didn't impress me. Neither did any of the massively popular actors. I started to think that kdramas and actors including were all style and hype but no substance.
This year started well with Signal, one of the very few shows I loved which rated well and enjoyed recognition. The other one I enjoyed was MDBC. The rest like Beautiful Mind, Pied Piper, Age of Youth, Drinking Solo and 1% of Anything were all single digits and never rose far above 5%. Just when I was happy with what I thought was a fairly good year, Weightlifting Fairy came and sign off the the year with a huge bang!

Please. i want them married at the end, because strangely whenever their scenes come up, i think about them being wife and hubby and how much they will bicker ,but would have loads of love for each other.
That would be the best ending for me, but anyways, most of the time, i get disappointments when it comes to endings, so my heart, please lower your expectations.
That is the most sweetest kiss i have seen in high school or college dramas. I kept replaying the ending over and over again.

Hoping to see more coupling up like Seon Ok and JH's roommate , uncle and coach Choi ) ! For some reason I don't fancy the coupling up of Jae Yi and Ah Young. He really doesn't really seemed keen on her after so many years of knowing each other so it might seemed a bit forced n too rushed if he really consider her from now on ....

Omo, I'm late joining the party. Everything about this episode is ❤. I'm still having a sugar rush even after two days after it was aired. I still giggle and being giddy when I remember this episode.
I can't believe we only have 4 eps left. ???.

I cried too. That last scene, so earnest, so heartfelt... I have been loving this show consistently from week 1, and it has been hitting all my sweet spots. Nam Joo Hyuk and Lee Sung-Kyung are killing it. I don't think I have ever felt a drama so intensly as I do this one (and I've pretty much seen it all). They get to me in ways I didn't think a mere drama could get to me.

Ikr. When you've watched so many romcoms, you get to recognize a gem when you see one. Because you already know that it doesn't always work, but when it does like in this drama, you're left speechless at the utter simplicity of it all.

Couldn't agree more.
This drama is hitting all the right spots for me in a way its hard to explain. Its not just sweet and cute that attracts me, its so many things.
For instance the parallels between
1. Bokju's dad and Shiho's mom
2. The weightlifting coaches and the rhythmic gymnast coach
3. Joon hyung's approach to Bok ju and Ah Young's approach to Jae Yi
And our main characters are written so well and I can't find any fault in their acting.
Oh not to forget the writer's quirky twists on K-Drama tropes. Love them. ?

I loved that while the big grand gestures did make Bok Joo's heart flutter, it was the small acts out of pure love that made Bok Joo fall completely for Joon Hyung.
This show gets better each week.. I can't believe it's almost over.. T^T

This is the first time I have ever cried tears of joy watching two other people kiss HAHAH The ending scene was absolutely heartfelt, and it was so endearing to see a love so pure and innocent :) Was worried that Joonhyung is still very young and childish and immature but his small and thoughtful gestures when Bokjoo's dad collapsed proved me otherwise!! Makes me so happy to see how sincere and loving he is towards Bokjoo but also makes me wonder if I will ever find anyone who loves me that much :( It is so true that most of the times it is not a grand romantic gesture that scores a point in someone's heart: small but thoughtful actions which show how much you care touch the other person much more?

I think this is the first time EVER that I was clapping my hands and stood up after the show, it's as if I just watched a wonderful concerto. And the last time I felt that "this show is going to stay with me forever" is when I watched Hogu's Love. Hurray to dramas like these :)

Thanks LollyPip for the thoughtful recaps!
I just couldn't agree more on how Nam Joo Hyuk effortlessly nailed his Joon Hyung character! I only know him since Three meals a day: Gochang village as well as Moon Lovers, but I never thought I'd be head over heals watching him in WLFKBJ!!! To me he is irresistable as I keep repeating scenes to see his detailed gestures and reactions, which comes out very natural as if he's not acting at all!!!
I wanna see more on how Bok Joo will help Joon Hyung to overcome his trauma and at least show us that he can eventually win and selected for the national team! ( hahahah I know I'm being ridiculous!)

While looking up the cast, BJ's friend, Nan-hee was the second female lead in Cinderella and the Four Knights. Props to the actress as she made Nan-hee her own as a character, complete will all the little mannerisms.
Love, love, love this show. Kilig pa more.

She was also the lead in Imaginary Cat with Yoo Seung Ho, but that was a pretty short web drama.
Actually, maybe 2nd lead, really...after the cat LOL.

Thanks for the recap, LP!
How much do I love this show, this ep, and this couple!!
I'm really happy to see that JH really cares so much about BJ and is just a super duper awesome and amazing friend and now bf!! He always places BJ first, is sensitive to her feelings and condition, and BJ's priority is his priority!! I agree that even though it wasn't quite right the way he obtained her bucket list, it was so sweet of him to try to make those things happen for her. And I loved how her heart was starting to flutter from these things and his proximity.
I love that this ep focused on family and friendship--BJ is there to be for Dad and for SO. And the best thing was that JH understood and let BJ do what she needed to do. He could've gotten upset at her for visiting SO instead of seeing him, or how his roses got wasted cuz BJ's mind was completely elsewhere. But he didn't and I loved how he tried to calm BJ down and even bought those necessities!! That really showed how thoughtful he is and how much consideration he has for BJ!! That's real love!!
So, when the ep was reaching its end and I could see BJ wearing her bow clip for JH, my heart was just full of joy since I knew that she has made up her mind about her feelings. When she told JH that she intends to keep him, I squealed!! Awww these two cuties are finally together!! I loved that she even changed her wording while telling him how she feels since she is now certain that she likes him and definitely wants to have him by her side. Having someone always next to you to be by your side in your time of need is so important. Roses are nice, but you don't really need those things cuz being there for you is so much better. I'm so glad BJ realizes this as did JH. Those kisses are super sweet and like the icing on a cake. I love how he kissed her quickly and she responded with not one, but TWO kisses in succession. JH was thrilled and finally went in for the real thing!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ My heart is exploding for the sweetest and most natural couple in kdrama this year!! And yes, the way JH looked at BJ during the fireworks is such love!! ????? May I add that I totally LOLed during the Viking ride cuz memories of Jisoo with Joohyuk on Bromance are too strong, especially when Joohyuk linked his arm with LSK's, reminding me of how he held onto Jisoo's arm for dear life!! ?????
Dad is truly so sacrificial and loves BJ so much. I'm glad BJ had a chance to see that through those insurance policies and so happy to have her back on the weightlifting team!!
I hope SH gets the real help that she needs. Sleeping pills and binge eating just spell trouble.

i used to watch 4 dramas a week, but now that i started watching WFKBJ i've legit dropped all of them, i just can't bring myself to watch them because none of them compare the awesomeness that is WFKBJ. even my standards for the OTP in a drama has flown up so high since watching bok-joo and joon hyung

I love your comment on this episode. I will have to agree on most of the things and thoughts you mentioned. Exactly whats in my head. I like it how the PDnim pay attention to the small details and twisted a bit on the characters. I love all the character in the drama. They are all unique and each of them are strong as individual. They live up the character so well to the point where it's believable; the character is real, the emotion is real, the friendship is real, even the father-daughter-uncle r/ship seems real.
And I like it that viewer like us able to pinpoint and relates on whatever the PDnim and the actors try to convey even without having to explain it directly (or press conference ?) on the drama. I hope this drama will garner more viewer and loved by everyone ☺️

I came back from the dead to leave this comment. I mean, who didn't die after watching that ending scene?!
I had this big smile while reading the first part of the comment section but that turned to tears as I read your thoughts about the relationship between Bokjoo and her dad.
WFKBJ has it all, I tell you. Even the second leads weren't just there for the heck of it. The show touches on topics like depression and sleeping and eating disorders with Shiho. I didn't like her character at first when she was blinded by her "love" for Joonhyung but now, I just wish for her to get support and overcome whatever she's going through.
It seems like Jaeyi had lingering feelings for his ex but with the phone call scene, it looks like he got his closure. I hope it ends well for him too.
Thanks for the recap and Merry Christmas!

When Bok Joo first tried to kiss Jooh Hyung, her expression was like.. I want to kiss him, but how should I do that? doesn't matter, I want to kiss him now.. (^^)
2nd kiss expression.. Oh it felt good, I want to kiss him again!
