Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: Episode 3

I wouldn’t have thought this show could get any more adorable after its strong start, but then it went and did exactly that. But it also adds some more serious moments into the mix, allowing us to see deeper into our characters and their conflicts. Emotions run high when you’re young, making every little thing seem like life or death, and Bok-ju in particular is about to learn just how painful and beautiful first love can be.

EPISODE 3: “Let it go”

Bok-ju gathers every bit of her courage and makes an appointment with handsome doctor Jae-yi, who recognizes her right away from that rainy day. Out of nowhere and without preamble, Bok-ju asks, “Do you like Messi?” She’s taking a cue from her friend Nan-hee, who asserts that guys like girls who like sports, and this line suggests a shared love of soccer.

Unfortunately Bok-ju’s question only confuses Jae-yi, and his confusion causes her to stammer, and things just get a thousand times more awkward. But Jae-yi is a sweet guy, and he discusses the soccer player with Bok-ju for a minute, though he’s not sure why. The awkwardness doesn’t diminish Bok-ju’s growing crush on him, and after her checkup, she remembers him in a pretty haze of light, like an angel.

He’d discussed the possibility of helping her lose weight, and it’s not until after the appointment that Bok-ju realizes his program costs nearly five hundred dollars. Yikes. She imagines his photo on his flyer asking her sweetly to sign up, and pouts sadly.

She heads to the ATM, but she’s a couple hundred short. She tries to think of a way to earn money, and decides to tell her dad that she needs new shoes for weightlifting. Excited, she runs for home and blazes right past Joon-hyung, who watches her with a big goofy grin.

Bok-ju arrives home to find her father patching up the delivery scooter again, while Uncle Dae-ho complains that they should just get a new one. Bok-ju feels guilty, and decides not to ask for the money now.

Rhythmic gymnast Shi-ho struggles during practice, and grows jealous when she overhears up-and-coming teammate Soo-bin being praised by their coach. The coach pulls Shi-ho aside to ask why she’s not improving, and suggests that she go to Russia for extra training during school vacation.

Weightlifting buddies Seon-ok and Nan-hee head to the student lounge, but they spot Soo-bin and one of her lackeys on the way. The four race like their lives depend on gaining control of the television remote, ha. Just as it looks like Soo-bin will get there first, Nan-hee throws her slipper and knocks the remote off the table, where Seon-ok snaps it out of the air in a perfect display of teamwork.

Of course Soo-bin whines, and Nan-hee teases that all she does is watch food shows because she can’t actually eat anything. Soo-bin fires back that Nan-hee reads fashion magazines even though she can’t wear the clothes, but Seon-ok just deadpans, “We don’t read fashion magazines.” Win.

Bok-ju arrives looking depressed, and asks her friends if they have any money. But they don’t have much, and Bok-ju mopes off sadly.

Shi-ho goes home to talk to her parents about training in Russia, but before she even gets in the door, she overhears them arguing about how expensive her gymnastics has become. Her mother wants to continue to support her, but her father is afraid of ending up completely penniless. Shi-ho leaves without going inside.

Jae-yi goes to lunch with Dr. Go, who notices that he’s acting strange. Jae-yi is just thinking about how Bok-ju asked him if he likes Messi, amused that a patient asked him a question for once. Dr. Go asks if the patient was pretty, and Jae-yi says that he thinks so.

Meanwhile, Bok-ju is seeing Jae-yi everywhere — lifting weights, holding an umbrella and waving in the practice room. She tries so hard to shake herself back to her senses that she squishes Nan-hee while stretching, until Nan-hee screams for mercy. Her friends note that Bok-ju is acting weird lately, and accuse her of trying to get out of the school’s upcoming mountain climbing race.

Bok-ju steps out for some air, and jumps out of her skin to see Jae-yi standing next to her, holding an umbrella. She knows he’s a hallucination, even when he cheerily asks why she hasn’t signed up for his program yet.

She tells Imaginary Jae-yi that she’s broke, but he just smiles and asks again why she hasn’t signed up. Bok-ju decides she’s losing her mind and tries to run from him, which just makes her look like a loon to everyone on campus.

Joon-hyung gets a text message from Shi-ho, who’s been drinking alone and is pretty sloshed by now. She praises him for coming out for an ex-girlfriend, but he counters that she said she’d wait all night, so he had to come.

Shi-ho tells Joon-hyung that in her next life, she wants to be born into a rich family. Then she can live in a big house, and whether she decides to pursue gymnastics or just be lazy, her parents will support her. Joon-hyung tells her not to go around talking like that because it makes her look bad, but Shi-ho replies that she really is feeling desperate.

He tells her that she’s just unhappy because there’s a gap between what she wants and reality. He tells her to be less greedy, and starts to head back to the dorm. Shi-ho stumbles and he grabs her hand, then pulls away. But she grabs him back, and says that his hands are still warm. Joon-hyung isn’t swayed and walks away, pulling his fingers from hers.

The girls aren’t looking forward to the mountain climbing race tomorrow, and they discuss different ways to try to get out of it. But there’s no way out without a serious injury, so they resign themselves to their fate. Bok-ju perks up to hear that there’s enough prize money for the first up the mountain to enable her to sign up for Jae-yi’s program.

The kids psych themselves up on the bus the next morning by singing and cheering, so they’re all pumped up by the time the teams all arrive at the mountain. Bok-ju imagines Jae-yi rising over the mountain like a shining god, beckoning for her to come to him, ha. They start, and Bok-ju pushes past the other athletic teams and even leaves her friends behind.

Further up the mountain, Joon-hyung tries to claim an ankle injury to get out of finishing the race. But his sunbae Ki-seok just kicks his other ankle and tells him to get a move on, heh. He threatens to punish the entire swimming team if Joon-hyung doesn’t make it to the top of the mountain.

Joon-hyung drags his butt up the mountain wearily, until he spots Bok-ju up again. Suddenly he has all kinds of energy, and bounces over to tease her about getting this far. She does her best to ignore the pest, but he stays right on her heels, cheering her on enthusiastically.

Joon-hyung needles Bok-ju harder, laughing when she flails at him to leave her alone. He gets behind her to give her a not-at-all helpful push, and accidentally knocks her down. Suddenly he’s apologizing all over the place, genuinely sorry to have hurt her.

He follows her like a sad little puppy, apologizing over and over, until she finally gives him her best death glare. He tries to help her, or even piggyback her the rest of the way, so she finally just shoves him away. He pretends he hurt his knee and wails loudly, trying to get her to turn back, then jumps up when she doesn’t.

Bo-ju finally makes it to the top, but she’s nowhere near the first to get there. Joon-hyung suggests they ice her ankle, and she finally speaks to tell him to get lost. She yells that they aren’t friends, and gripes at him for hovering around her all the time. She limps off, leaving Joon-hyung looking hurt.

That evening, Nan-hee and Seon-ok take Bok-ju out for food and beer to cheer her up. Bok-ju sees Jae-yi in the ads on the table, and does her best to shake it off. Nan-hee drinks so much that she gets hyper and starts flinging her pigtails, hitting the guy behind her several times.

Jae-yi’s parents are relieved to hear that Joon-hyung will be trying therapy to find out why he’s having the spells that keep disqualifying him. Joon-hyung calls and tells them that he’ll be home to visit soon, and his roommate Tae-kwon calls him a mama’s boy.

Nan-hee continues to drink, and this time she spills her beer all over the guy behind her. Bok-ju tries to apologize but he and his friends pick a fight, so she gets frustrated and kicks a bench into his leg.

Joon-hyung and Tae-kwon stop in for a drink, where they see the fight brewing between the girls and the jerk. At first it look as though Joon-hyung may go over to help, but he’s still smarting from Bok-ju’s harsh words earlier, and he and Tae-kwon head upstairs.

The jerk gets physical, pushing Bok-ju and daring her to hit him. He says that she doesn’t even look like a woman, and that hits home — Bok-ju explodes. She grabs the jerk and shakes him, and their friends struggle to pull them off each other.

Seon-ok pushes her friends away, and they sit outside to cool down. Bok-ju apologizes for losing her temper, and Seon-ok reminds her that even if they’re weightlifters, they could still get hurt in a fight with a group of men.

Joon-hyung watches from the balcony as the jerk proceeds to badmouth the girls with his friends. They start to get inappropriate, saying that even “women like them” can be attractive in a rough sort of way. Talk gets pretty vulgar and Joon-hyung finally loses his temper, and runs down to punch the jerk right in the face.

He and Tae-kwon make a run for it, grabbing the girls on their way out. Joon-hyung takes Bok-ju’s hand while they flee the jerks, and they split up from the others to draw the jerks away.

The guys stop when they lose sight of Joon-hyung and Bok-ju, who are hiding under the counter of a nearby convenience store. They stay hidden until the guys leave, and once the coast is clear, Joon-hyung decides they can get up.

He bonks his head on the counter on the way up, and Bok-ju reaches up to rub the sore spot. They both realize how close they are and that her fingers are in his hair, and they freeze for just a moment. But Bok-ju jerks her hand back and blinks nervously, and the spell is broken (then she whacks her head too, hee).

They walk to a nearby overlook to enjoy the view of the city. Bok-ju finally wonders why they ran away, and Joon-hyung wonders why he ran away with her. Bok-ju asks if he saw what happened in the restaurant, and if Joon-hyung got into a fight because of her.

Joon-hyung denies it, saying that he’s not that loyal, but Bok-ju just asks cheekily what he was running from. He fibs that all the women were looking at his handsome face so he had to run, and Bok-ju complains that he can’t ever be serious.

Still, she thanks him for making her run and getting her mind off some things, and Joon-hyung asks what kind of things. Bok-ju says they aren’t close enough for a serious conversation, but she does ask him why he seems so different than she remembers from school.

Joon-hyung says that he couldn’t survive, being so shy. He leans in close and asks softly if he’s not much more attractive now, and Bok-ju threatens to smack him, complaining that his chin is too pointy. She turns to appreciate the view, but Joon-hyung seems much more interested in the view of Bok-ju.

He tells her that whatever is on her mind, not to force herself to come to a conclusion. He says she should give it time, and she answers with a wise “Whatever.”

Bok-ju is woken from a sound sleep the next morning to find Uncle Dae-ho polishing up a brand-new scooter. Dad is impressed when Dae-ho says that he bought it with money he earned working as an extra.

Shi-ho stops in front of a shoe store, remembering that when she and Joon-hyung were together, she’d once brought him here. She’d wanted to buy matching shoes, but he’d said he hates that sort of thing and wrestled her out of the store.

Dad gives Bok-ju a ride to school on the new bike, then hands her a wad of money. He tells her not to just train all the time but to spend the money on something fun, and refuses to take it back no matter how hard Bok-ju tries. He also tells her that Dae-ho will go to the hospital with him from now on, so she can be a normal college student. Aww, Dad.

Joon-hyung and Tae-kwon go to pick up their mail, roughhousing like the children they are. There’s a package for Joon-hyung containing a new pair of sneakers, and he knows immediately who they came from.

He texts Shi-ho to meet with him, and gives her back the shoes. She asks why he can’t keep them, and he admits that he thought about it, but he didn’t feel comfortable accepting them from her. Shi-ho apologizes, saying that she didn’t realize he would feel that way.

Bok-ju stares at the money from her father, but she argues with herself over whether to use it to sign up for Jae-yi’s weight loss program. She thinks that it would be disloyal to Dad to use his hard-earned money for this, and though it looks like it kills her, she puts the money away.

Bok-ju re-dedicates herself to her training, and tells her friends that although she’s been lazy lately, from now on she plans to focus. She yells off the dorm roof, ”I’m Kim Bok-ju! The rising star of weightlifting, Kim Bok-ju!!”

Then the neighbors yell and her friends have to pull her back inside, ha. She thinks to herself that she’s liked guys before, and she’s sure this crush is just a passing thing. If she just waits, time will fly by.

She makes good on her promise, training hard and earning praise from the coaches. She’s cheerful with her friends again, too, and Joon-hyung smiles as he sees them playing from across campus.

Shi-ho walks into a meeting between the coach and Soo-bin, and overhears them talking about Soo-bin joining the national team when she gets back from training in Russia. Shi-ho tells the coach that she can’t go to Russia to train, and the coach asks if it’s about the cost. Shi-ho’s disappointed expression is answer enough.

The coach apparently calls Shi-ho’s mother, who then calls to fuss at Shi-ho for not even asking about going to Russia. Shi-ho finally loses her temper, and says that they couldn’t afford it anyway. She yells that her mother keeps pretending everything is fine so that she forgets that they’re poor, and throws her phone across the room.

Then she grabs the shoes she bought for Joon-hyung and takes them to the boys’ dorm. She walks in like she belongs there and finds Joon-hyung, and shoves the shoes at him angrily. She snaps that she was wrong and she understands his position, but that he shouldn’t reject her gift: “Wear them or throw them away, but I already gave them to you.”

Bok-ju loses the rock-paper-scissors throw to clean the workout room, and Nan-hee and Seon-ok head out to lunch while Bok-ju checks her messages. There’s a text from Jae-yi saying that now that he’s thought about it, he likes Ronaldo more than Messi.

Bok-ju stares at the message as if he just confessed his undying love, and thinks to herself that sometimes, passionate emotions surpass all time and reason. She runs out, heading towards Jae-yi’s clinic, thinking about the fable of the moth and the flame: That even though the moth knows the flame is a trap set by humans, and that it will kill him, the flame is too beautiful for the moth not to throw himself into.

Bok-ju narrates that she’s scared that this road may lead her into a fire pit, but she’s going to go down it anyway.

As she reaches the intersection where she first met Jae-yi, she blinks in surprise to see him standing right across the street. The light turns green, and as they approach one another, Jae-yi sees Bok-ju and waves.

They stop in the middle of the street, and Bok-ju stares at Jae-yi as if unsure he’s really there. She reaches out to poke his shoulder, and he smiles and asks if she’s okay. She still can’t quite believe he’s really here, and this time she touches his cheek. Jae-yi looks at Bok-ju curiously, but he doesn’t back away.

COMMENTS

Aww, the crushes in this show are just so raw and real, I love them. Joon-hyung’s crush on Bok-ju is so cute it almost hurts to watch, and I don’t think he even knows he likes her yet. But it’s Bok-ju’s crush on Jae-yi that really hits me in the gut, because haven’t we all been there? Having feelings for someone that you know you can never be with, but you can’t help but want anyway, is such a human thing to go through. It’s painful and wonderful all at the same time, and I love watching Bok-ju experience it even as I dread her inevitable broken heart.

I had expected the show to focus more heavily on the sports competition angle than it is, but I don’t actually mind. I’m pleasantly surprised that it seems to be more focused on the realities of being a competitive athlete than the sports themselves. When we watch sports on television or go to a game or match, it’s easy to forget that many of the athletes are very young, often still students, and that they aren’t always experienced adults in charge of their own lives. So I’m intrigued by the backstage pass that this drama is giving us into the harsh realities of sports — the hard training, the expense, and the physical and emotional toll it takes on the athletes themselves.

I feel bad for Shi-ho in particular, because as Joon-hyung said, there’s a large gap between what she wants and what’s possible, and it’s the source of her current unhappiness with her life. She’s hit a plateau in her skills, and she can’t improve without further training. Yet her family has already sold their house to fund her dreams, and there’s just not much left, so she’s stuck in place. It must be a terrible feeling, to have a passion for something and even the talent, but not to be able to afford the training to really excel and make it all worth it. It’s no wonder she got so upset about the shoes — they were an expense she couldn’t really afford, and for Joon-hyung to refuse them was like a slap in the face on multiple levels. But I don’t think Shi-ho really wants Joon-hyung back, I think that she’s just longing for a time when she was still on that upward trajectory, both personal and professional, and seeing him again brings back memories of a better time for her. Shi-ho seems like a nice enough girl, and I hope that rather than chase Joon-hyung around campus, she focuses her energies on finding a way to afford to pursue her dreams.

Speaking of Joon-hyung and Shi-ho, it’s interesting to me how Joon-hyung is almost like two different people — with Bok-ju he’s bouncy and happy, but with Shi-ho he seems older and weary (and credit to Nam Joo-hyuk for playing both sides equally well). It’s a clear indication of which girl is better for him right now, because he seems most like the young carefree man he should be when he’s with Bok-ju. Unfortunately he’s so silly with her that she doesn’t take him seriously, because he’s still behaving like a little kid poking the girl he likes, and just making her angry in the process. But it’s clear that Bok-ju isn’t unaffected by him, and if he can just slow his roll with her and let her see his serious side, I think he’d quickly overcome her crush on his cousin.

Having said that, Joon-hyung definitely went too far with his teasing and shoving of Bok-ju on the mountain, and I’m glad she cut him down to size. I was so proud of him last week for calming down with the jokes after seeing her struggling, but then he ramped it back up to eleven and ended up hurting her, both physically and emotionally. Gentle teasing of the girl you like is one thing, but Joon-hyung was bordering on bullying, so it was good to see him feel real remorse for his behavior. I have hopes that he’s just a good boy who doesn’t realize yet that he likes Bok-ju because she’s not the sort of girl he normally goes for.

I really liked the fable at the end of the moth and the flame, it perfectly describes that feeling of first love. Even though you know it’s doomed, even when you can see it will never go anywhere, the feelings are so beautiful that you can’t help but suffer through them, knowing the end is coming. Bok-ju even said that her liking Jae-yi will probably end in disaster, but it’s something she just feels she has to go through. I only hope that she comes out the other side with her heart intact.

thankyou so much for the recap LollyPip! ^_^ I am absolutely loving this drama and actually wait until 3am in the morning to watch the raw release and then watch later and about 12pm for the subs to be added! HAHAHAAA T T this is a sad but true fact!

Anyway I loved the scene when Bok-Ju decided that she was going to train hard and then she got that text message when she was cleaning the gym! Oh my, my heart literally exploded because I could relate 100% HAHAHAA! I really enjoy the chemistry between Nam Joo-hyuk and Lee Sung-kyung and cannot wait to see more of their friendship develop before anything romantic happens!

I love coming of Age drama's and especially ones that relate to first loves and all that jazz! Also love the 3 girls friendship and of course their trade mark remark "swag"!

I loved that gym scene too!! So painfully relateable omg - when you've just gathered enough determination to promise yourself you'll get over a crush, and then the very next minute they send you a message and you're back to square one all over again.

Ha ha.. so true! When you are determined to get over it and move on and build your resolve and focus on other things. Then When you walk across him or something, you will keep thinking "ignore him, ignore him" and of all the times he could have smiled or talked to you, he will choose that particular time to do so and all your resolve will just vaporize into thin air, lol.

It was funny at first but then it went really ugly like it is supposed to and the conversation that followed by the group of men as nasty as it was is what some of the woman athletes face and I've read about them on articles. It was funny and then it went real and back to heartwarming and funny. The show does balance its funny to re transition rather well. I know it can't compete on the same level with LOBS but I hope this does well and more people tune in.

Drunk Nan Hee was hilarious but I couldn't help but in real life she would be incredibly annoying. Getting whacked, having beer spilled all over you because some drunk couldn't manage themselves is not cute. No excuses for the guys behaviour though, but all I could think was - why not move her over to the other side next to the other friend? Of course that doesn't make for good TV.

This show has made my cold, cynical heart all squishy again. The writing is on point. The leads are doing a great job. Plus the world of competitive sports is no joke. The scene where the gymnastics coach tells some of the girls that weigh more than they should to stay and work out harder broke my heart. My daughter has a friend in rhythmic gymnastics who is battling anorexia. Her former coach used to tell her she was fat all the time (she wasn't!). She used to be such a beautiful, confident child. Her mother figured out what was going on and wanted to take her out of gymnastics, but the girl wanted to stay. So they switched coaches and now goes to therapy too. She told her friends in school what was going on through an English presentation about her life. Luckily he classmates are gold and support her 100%. So you can see why I'm so invested on this show.

It was actually a slow process. She just started eating less. Since everybody knew that she was a gymnast it was accepted. But eventually you realize there is something wrong. Looking back I remember a slumber party at my daughter's best friend's house where she was not eating at all. I had stayed behind to help out before the girls went to sleep and I kept thinking that this child had not eaten at all. I thought the typical pizza/cake birthday food was the turn off, so I just got in the car I went and got her a roast chicken breast and salad from a nearby place. She really didn't want to eat, but she was polite and ate half of it. However, even though she was skinny then, she still looked relatively normal. Now she is too skinny. Her face reminds me of pictures of starving children. Hopefully with therapy and the support of everyone around her she'll pull though this.

This drama is such a lovely contrast to the Legend of the Blue Sea, it's really a joy to watch both of them together on Thursdays and Fridays (I tried Oh My Geum-Bi but stopped because I was afraid of the tears that will come)

Really love how the side characters stand out on their own, Ji il-joo is really doing great as Joon-Hyung's roommate they are cute going around together as a set.

Really found it funny when he was holding Nan-Hee's hand and the three of them including Seon-Ok running together when they got split up during the chase :D (honestly I don't mind shipping him with either girl it'd be cute to have a cute side romance and I think it'd be cute with either girl hehe)

Really like Seon-ok and Nan-hee too they are doing well in being their own character and they are really fun to watch (oh the remote control scene)

main leads are cute together though I'm glad that Nam Joo-Hyuk has been able to show such improvement from School 2015, he's really doing his character well and I can't wait for the next episode!

So much cute! Lee Sung Kyung is doing a great job. It's nice to see her developing into such a good actress. I also have to confess, I had never thought of her as especially beautiful until this role. She really is gorgeous and you can see it more easily without the glamour makeup.

Argh how do I express my love for this show?? I just really, really appreciate the fact that all of the characters that we've met are living, breathing people with a distinct personality of their own. Sometimes in these trendy youth dramas we get a lot of caricatures, but in WF everybody is living a life with their own set of triumphs and troubles. Which is seriously the most relatable aspect of this show ever.

I love that Shi-ho isn't the typical second lead out for the female lead's blood just because--she has her own problems to deal with, her own merits and her own flaws (which Joon-hyung so astutely pointed out in this episode). I really liked seeing her burst out in anger and force the shoes on Joon-hyung, because she and Joon-hyung were trying so hard to be the ~mature adults~ before about the break-up, but watching her be angry was great in terms of character development, because she isn't just a nice, almost-genius rhythmic gymnast anymore. Shi-ho has a temper problem, which is exacerbated by her family situation and her desperation to break through that plateau she's stranded on, and it's a nice, realistic touch because it's the only thing she knows she's good at and can't afford to lose. I agree that her unwillingness to let go of Joon-hyung is also because of how he makes her feel like the good old days again. It's kind of sad, but also real, and what I appreciate the most about WF.

Bok-ju and the jerk calling her and her friends "non-women" made me really sad. Because who gets to decide that? Does being a weightlifter make any of them lesser of a woman? Society can be very unkind at times, which is why I cheered when Joon-hyung punched him! You go, make up for your mistakes boy! Joon-hyung crossed that line on the mountain hiking excursion, and I'm also glad that Bok-ju put him in his place. He honestly does seem like he's incredibly happy to just see Bok-ju every time she appears around him, and that doesn't translate very well into his actions I feel. Joon-hyung's overenthusiastic but with no ill intentions, and I hope he keeps her words to mind! Gotta respect the girl before she falls back in love with you, yeah.

Bok-ju's crush on Jae-yi: what can I say, been there, done that. Complete with all the angelic background lighting and sometimes hallucinations. It's ok Bok-ju, love freely when you're young!

I can't wait to see what happens when Joon-hyung finds out that Bok-ju is nursing a massive crush on Jae-yi. HIJINKS AHEAD!!

Ok, first... I really really love this show, because its ADORABLE. YOUTH. FIRST LOVE. <3 Just, CUTE.

However, I was really really really hoping she would NEVER get enough money for the weight loss program. I don't know what Doc Hyung's program is... but Im very suspicious if it will be suited for her. I hope she doesn't have to take pills or go into some "body contouring" session stuff. I hope he doesnt make her go into some intense weird cleansing dieting. If this happens, I will RIOT. She's a weightlifter, she NEEDS the muscle mass.

I'm currently training with my PT coach because I have an old injury in my right calf muscle, that I've been meaning to improve. I tore my right calf muscle during dance class a couple of years ago, stopped dancing, gained a lot of weight, which lead to significant pressure and early arthritis on my right knee. :( Please bear in mind, I'm supposed to be a doctor and I should be like this "beacon" of health. But I confess I am not. I am a work in progress.

At first, it felt really weird because I was eating MORE, but I was LOSING weight. But my weight loss isnt just the usual, oh i lost 5 kg after two months, yayyy....no. I gained a lot of muscle mass and I lost some body fat. My metabolism was changing because my activities are changing. My coach doesnt make me dead lift (YET), because of my knee.. but he does give me 50 kg weights during squats. I have a sort of gym classmate who's shorter than me, but lifts. Everytime she does it, I give my coach a really scared look. LOL.

Also, disclaimer: Part of my weight loss is NOT healthy. I was sick for two weeks (one week admitted, then one week more on antibiotics at home), thankfully I didn't lose any muscle mass, Im still able to do some of the exercises today. DONT get sick. Its not fun. >_<

god, this drama makes me feel good. it's such a light, easy watch with so much heart and charm. i could watch joon-hyung trail after bok-ju like a lost, overly affectionate puppy for many more episodes, so i do hope bok-ju takes her time in developing feelings for him HAHA.

i just love this show to pieces so far. it might not have the bells and whistles but it got so much heart you just can't help but get charmed. kudos to LSK for doing the heavy lifting (pun intended) of youth emotions. bok joo is SO adorable, i just squee everytime she comes on screen. it's rare that i'm fangirling over the heroine more than the hero in a kdrama lol. the writing is spot on with the teen crushes and puppy loves and angst and funny moments <3

thank you so much for the recap!! I love your writing haha. I'm really loving this drama so much, it's like the characters are so real and relatable, they don't feel.. far away. I', really interested in shi ho, I actually think she's really sweet just that ahh, my heart aches for her that she can't go for the training in Russia; and when she returns the shoes to joon hyung, is it that she feels that by him returning her the shoes, he doesn't need to remind her that she's not very well off? Ah that girl, she's really like a delicate flower and somehow I really like her hahaha.

"Bok-ju stares at the message as if he just confessed his undying love..."

This line cracked me up lol. The whole time I watched the episode and see Bok Joo react whenever Jae-Yi gets in her mind just makes me cringe and laugh at the same time. But that makes me really like Bok Joo's character. BBut even though, Jae-Yi is such a gentleman, I agree that Joon-Hyun would be the best with Bok Joo and vice versa. I can't wait for the moment when they realize they like each other!

Like you said, we've all been there. Oh the awkwardness and hilarity. When she was running away from imaginary Jae Yi, it was gold.

My heart broke for Shi Ho. Lemme hug you girl! She seems so alone. I hope she finds a friend in Bok Joo. Please don't let them be just love rivals.

This show is so heart warming and I look toward to everybody episode. I love how everyone even the mean girls are loveable and how relatable Bok Joo is. I've been that girl with the crush who decides to look forward into her hobbies or career when she hits a romantic stalemate. I'm so invested into the two leads it makes me antsy, I want more scenes of them together. More cuteness!!

I know! I could see a little of that improvement peeking out while he was on-screen during Moon Lovers (that story, though, gah). I glad to see him carrying his weight (hur) with this role well.

despite the drama is soo MBC-like (comical and light for national broadcast compared to SBS and KBS),

I just looovvveee the casting, they're all familiar faces and doing such a great job! Lee Sungkyung is so pretty, cool, and adorable in here. She's officially one of my girl-crush! (geez YG got so much cool ladies)

The pace is good, I'm surely anticipated this more than any drama I'm watching rn...

Loved your comments, lollypip! So on point!

Oh my god! This episode had so much heart! I enjoyed it more than the first two episodes. The messi scene was adorable. I could totally relate to bok ju having a crush on the doctor. I had a huge crush on my senior when I was in first year. When all the guys in my class seemed silly, he looked self assured and confident. There is just something about older guys when you are young, that you can't help but feel attracted to. I still remember the first time I talked to him trying to be cool but failing miserably exactly like bok ju! But, that crush lead to nothing, lol. Turned out he was really popular and talked to more girls than guys (like what you said, lollypip, 'someone that you know you can never be with'), but I will never forget him for the things he made me feel just by his presence and I will never regret it either.

Also, another thing that I like about college/high school settings is the underlying friendships. The friendship between nan hee, seon ok and bok ju is just A+.
When you are young, no matter whatever complicated emotions you feel towards a person, you will never give up on them because they are your friend before everything else. Which we got to see when joon hyung went to see shi ho despite breaking up with her and when he punched those guys even when he decided not to get involved initially. Sadly, we stop doing that when we become adults because we stop starting relationships as friends, but I guess that's impossible to change and that's how the world just is. This is why we should experience as much as we can when we are in college or school as long its legal. So, you go, Bok ju!

You are definitely lifting my spirits, weightlifting fairy! Keep them coming!

As someone that used to be a competitive rhythmic gymnast, I can totally understand where Shi-ho is coming from. It's a pretty expensive sport (leotards, equipment, competitions, outside training).

I feel like the reason she might be hitting a brick wall on her training is because she lost focus on how much she loves this sport, and keeps focusing on just winning in order to show her parents that the money they threw into her training was worth it. You can never truly improve or become great at a sport if you don't enjoy it (speaking from experience!).

That's why Bok-joo seems to be on the rise - even though her family is poor, they are honest with each other in terms of being OK with sacrificing some aspects of their lives to help her succeed. Her wonderful dad always makes sure that she does not feel like a burden in those cases. Parental support really makes up a giant part of an athletes emotional well being. Just remember that if you even have a child who does sports!

Oh.. glad to hear from a professional athlete. I am loving reading the comments in this thread because everybody is sharing their real life experiences and that just shows how much close the drama is in depicting real life.

It actually makes me interested in seeing her go through her journey because I've never had a first love. And I've been cynical and really conscious of myself since I was 13 so I could never really have something that innocent with anyone, so being able to at least empathize with her feelings will be rewarding.

This show is so perfect. I'm loving how it is fun, light and at the same time it adds all these realistic issues that most of us can relate to, like not having money for what you desire the most, be it Bok Ju trying to meet her doctor or the more serious case of Shi Ho.
I also love all the puppy love and crushes around and it reminds me a bit of myself when I was a teenager, haha!! It's a delight to watch Bok Ju's crush and even more to watch Joon Hyung falling for her. :D

I hope the show keeps being this good. They are doing a great job. :)

Thanks for the recap! I haven't really followed along with the work of Lee Sung-kyung and Nam Joo-hyuk, but I gotta say I'm super impressed with their acting abilities so far. Both of them can do the bright fluff, but then convey so much emotion with a look - very impressed and looking forward to the show, which is a delight so far. It's so sweet and so heartfelt.

I just so love the little details in the show as much as the puppy romance. "Staph it" just cracked me up bad, even when i wanted to punch that Jerk guy's face.I just love NanHee and her antics. Each and every character is so enjoyable to watch.
The voices from the dorms listening to them on the terrace are so funny too.
Oh and that remote snatching scene was sooo Relatable from my own college days! What wouldn't girls do to get hold of it..haha

Keep giving us our weekly dose of heart show!

I am really impressed with Lee Sung Kyung. I can tell she's giving it her all, and I could totally believe she's an athlete, not a model. the way she walks, her small actions, and facial expressions were so different from her attack on characters from Cheese and Doctors. She just makes me cheer so much for Bok-Joo and wanting all the best for Bok-Joo.

and shout out to Bok-Joo's two friends; they're amazing and hilarious as side characters. if the show focused more on their relationship, I wouldn't mind. I actually snort-laughed at that drunken scene of her friend, her twin-tails hitting the guy behind her!

Love this show to bits. Just finished the 4th episode and it keeps getting better. I really like that it is not just a sports story but it has included bits of other elements - how people view female athletes, money issues, falling in love, best pickup line of the year, mental health issues...

I like Bok-Joo and Joon-hyung together but Doc-hyung is so damn cute and mature. Her hallucinations and re-enactments were so hilarious. Poor baby never had a chance after receiving the text - she completely lost it at that point. Too much cuteness...I am only watching this drama in the current lineup, waiting for the next episode is going to feel like eternity.

I didn't realize how much I would love this show! Definitely my feel good show for the week. It's a pretty good replacement for Shopping King Louie!

Bok How's crush on Jae-yi is absolutely adorable! I loved her face when she was asking him if he liked Messi in the beginning.

Joon-hyung is so freaking childish when it comes to Bok Joo. I get why she gets frustrated with him. He is being an ass! But he clearly likes her just doesn't know it yet. Dork. Lol

Stangely I love this more more than Lotbs. Its so cute and fun. Not to be a spoiler but whem I see shi ho I just don't like her and as I watch ep 4 I know why. When ep 4 recap comes out will talk bout it. I like this drama makes bok joo don't like the lead man first instead the sencond lead and it so refreshing. So much to like about this drama. Hope will continue to be like this until the end of episode 16.

thank you for the recap!! :)
Bok Joo and Joon Hyung's crushes are SO lovely and cute!! I love how Joon Hung is all smiles and fun around Bok Joo, though he's not giving himself any favor by pushing his luck with her!! I was laughing and yelling at the same time for him to keep his childish acts with her in control, his redeeming quality is that he starts acting on making up for his unintentional mistakes the second he realise it but it would be better if he stops making them to begin with and he'll learn that with time for sure!! bad thing is he's not allowing her to see his sweet and caring side and I hope she'll start to see it soon!! I actually love his both childish and mature sides!! :D and the scene where he hitt his head and Bok Joo was rubbing the sore spot, I LOVE that moment!! they both were effected!! :D
Bok Joo is just like us, even if we will end up with painful ending acting in our emotions is still worth it!! her reaction to reading the message from Joon Hyung's hyung was spot on!! :D
I felt for Shi Ho too and she surely is in a sad position but I still believe that she needs to start trying to gain Joon Hyung's forgiveness before acting all friendly with him as if they didn't break up because of her!!

This show is like a little ray of sunshine. Innocent and naive kids with big dreams and the realities of adulthood looming ahead of them. You want to root for them to keep their bubble of happy as long as they can.
I'm pleasantly surprised at Shi-ho's backstory in that she's not a typical well-off second female lead. She's struggling just like everyone else. Makes me sad that she's so isolated from her own support system. Bok-joo has her awesome Dad and uncle and her two best friends. Joon hyung has an amazing hyung and parents plus his roommate/bff. Shi-ho can't really turn to her parents because they're already giving her all they've got in terms of monetary support and she'd feel guilty piling her emotional struggles onto them. Having personally been there (not in sports tho), I relate to her the most situationally. It can't be easy having to deal with a block in the one thing you held so much promise in. On top of that, the constant guilt of burdening her parents when you're not performing up to the high standards you're expected to must really have been tough. It makes sense that she's fixating on Joon hyung as if being with him will erase her problems.
On the other hand, I'm thoroughly entertained by the crushes in this drama. It's so cute!

I know shi ho looks like nice second lead but her obsession for easy life will become hardship for Bok ju as after few episodes she will do everything possible to get Joon hyung, it is why I never liked second lead .

What a delightful show so far. Thanks for the recap!

I am actually a little annoyed by shi-ho, even though I understand she's having a hard time. I just feel like they'll turn her into something evil by the end to play up the drama in the romance part. She will definitely be mean to get him back and it'll hurt Bokjoo. I am hoping they don't take that road.

The female friendships and crushes are so wonderful though. I hope this show keeps doing a good job on those!

This show is such a ball of sunshine--just what I need in this hectic college app season. I love the characters and the way they interact with each other. LSK is KILLING it. Every little action--her smile, her walking, her climbing--shows the awkward weightlifter her character is; I see no model LSK, and I love it.

Also, JH's crush on BJ is the cutest thing ever. His smile every time he sees her is to die for, and as most people pointed out, he did go a bit far this episode and did act a little too childish, but I am so excited for their future interactions.

Cuteness galore.

The part where they bumped their heads was my favorite.

I feel like BJ bumping her head was supposed to be NG (?) or probably not. But it was so candidly cute because NJH was smiling or laughing at LSK when he was trying to lift her up. Hehe. SO CUTE.

Thanks for the recap, LP!

Love the real feels of this show since we've all gone through these crushes. ^^ BJ is adorable in her crush on JY, and I like that the doctor is responding quite favourably in the sense that he finds her pretty and even ponders her questions.

I agree that JH's teasing needs to be toned down if he really wants to get BJ's proper attention. I also don't think he realizes his crush on her yet; he just finds it comfy to be around his childhood friend right now. The convenience store counter scene was so cute!! I love that BJ is instinctively kind and reached out to pat JH's head right away. And they both got shy cuz he was also patting his own head and his hand over BJ's hand. Keke~

SH is going through a lot, but I hope she will get over her bump and be able to improve in her craft. It sucks that her coach is so insensitive. You should never discuss a student's financial situation in the presence of another student!! What a contrast with the coaches on the weightlifting team.

Love the friendship between the trio of friends and it's good to see that they can always count on each other. This is a show that is a breezy watch and makes me happy.

I've seen the whole show, more than once and i'm still rooting for this couple until now. This show made me feel my college days that this is the part i missed. After this drama, I became a Lee sung Kyung solid fan. When I've seen Cheese in the Trap, she amazed me more. I've seen Doctors and It's Okay that's Love, she's really good for a new comer. I'm looking to watch new projects of her.
