Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: Episode 2

Love is in the air, though I doubt either of our young lovers knows it yet, and perhaps not in the configurations we were expecting. Old entanglements return while new infatuations blossom, and everyone is looking in a different direction. It’s no wonder these kids are confused, with all the pressure they have to face — it’s hard enough being an elite athlete without adding unexpected romantic feelings into the mix!

EPISODE 2: “If you come into my heart”

It’s 2005, and it’s Field Day at Bok-ju’s elementary school. Joon-hyung attends the same school, and his relay team warns him that he’d better run fast so they don’t lose. But when it’s his turn, not only does Joon-hyung drop the baton, but he proceeds to run in the wrong direction. Whoops.

The boys gripe at him as he cleans the classroom windows later, while down below, little Bok-ju bets her friend that she can eat a whole piece of bread in one bite. She shoves the entire thing in her mouth, just as Joon-hyung’s classmate startles him and he tumbles out the window.

He falls right on top of Bok-ju, who catches him, and the two tumble to the ground in a heap. They sit up and Bok-ju spits the entire piece of bread at Joon-hyung’s face, then they both laugh.

In the present, it’s Joon-hyung’s turn to save Bok-ju from drowning in the college pool. They stare at each other for a long moment before he dryly asks if she’s going to let go, and when she does and starts to sink again, he tells her to stop flailing and stand up. PFFT.

Joon-hyung hops out, but the sodden Bok-ju flings herself at the edge of the pool several times with no luck. Joon-hyung jumps back in to give her a shove, then tosses her a towel to dry off.

He smirks while Bok-ju apologizes again for accusing him of being the pervert and washing his handkerchief. He startles her by calling her by name, having figured out where he knows her from, then calls her by her old nickname, “Chubs.”

She remembers him, though she’s decidedly less excited about it, and calls him that skinny kid who ran in the wrong direction. She nervously thumps him on the arm, and he thumps her right back, and she makes her escape. He accepts her apology, and gets in one last dig: “See you again, Chubs!”

Bok-ju’s friends are way more excited that she went to elementary school with the handsome swimmer than she is, and she whines that he’s much too tall and cool now. Nan-hee angles for an introduction and Seon-ok tells her to give it up, but Bok-ju shushes them both and says she’s got a bad feeling about this.

She’s got excellent instinct, because soon “Hey Chubs!” rings out across the quad. She puts her head down and tries to scoot away, but he stands in front of her so that she head-butts his chest. He compliments her wide shoulders before moving off with a cheerful grin.

The girls tuck into lunch in the cafeteria with gusto, while the rhythmic gymnasts look on in horror. Bok-ju hears, “Hey Chubs!” again, and there’s Joon-hyung, who teases her for eating so much then gives her his yogurt drink and his roommate’s.

He continues to needle her on the track while their teams jog, running backwards and refusing to leave until she gives him a high-five. Good grief, he’s like a big bouncy annoying bunny.

Later, Bok-ju makes a wish at the fountain, and of course Joon-hyung wanders past and hollers, “Oi, Chubs!” And then he actually pants like an excited puppy, anticipating her reaction. Bok-ju tells him to stop calling her that, and he nods agreeably, “Sorry Chubs.”

Bok-ju motions Joon-hyung to come over, and he cheerily refuses several times before finally moving towards her curiously. She beckons him close, closer, and he leans down… and she headbutts him hard. Buddy, you’re the cutest, but you deserved that.

Apparently he doesn’t learn his lesson, because he calls her Chubs again as she’s leaving. His roommate bows to Bok-ju respectfully, and reminds Joon-hyung that she’s a weightlifter. Joon-hyung just grins, crowing that teasing her is fun.

Nan-hee tells Bok-ju that he’s only teasing her to get a rise out of her, and Seon-ok reminds her that she started it by accusing him of being a pervert. Nan-hee is jealous that such a good-looking guy hangs around Bok-ju, but Bok-ju says he’s too infuriating to even be eye candy. Beg to differ?

The chicken restaurant is bustling so Bok-ju arrives to help out, but Dad tells her to go back to school. Bok-ju demands to be paid for working, but Dad snaps that he pays her in chicken.

A voice calls out for more popcorn, and Bok-ju runs to the window to see a handsome customer smiling at her (cameo by Lee Jong-seok). Uncle Dae-ho grumbles that that cheap guy doesn’t even buy any chicken, but Bok-ju tells him to hush, because that guy is Jong-seok, pride of Haneul Sport University and member of the national shooting team. HAHA.

Joon-hyung’s hoobaes bring his laundry to him, and his roommate suggests they all go out to eat. He objects until he sees their poor starving faces, so they all head out together.

Bok-ju brings the cute Jong-seok a bag of popcorn as big as he is, and a strange look comes over Jong-seok’s face. He grabs Uncle Dae-ho’s wrist and asks if they’ve met before, but he just recognizes him from one of the weekend dramas he’s been on.

Dae-ho is excited to be recognized, and Jong-seok sighs that he’s never met a real live celebrity before. Dae-ho tells him that celebrities are people too, and that Jong-seok even looks like he could be a manhwa character. OMG this is so great.

Bok-ju finds a vanity table in the house, and she asks Dad if he got it off the street. He stammers that he didn’t, swearing that he bought it off the internet. He claims that he got it because she’s been wanting a big mirror, and Bok-ju teases him for pretending not to be thoughtful.

Joon-hyung and his friends wait for their delivery food, whining that it’s been too long since they ordered. It finally arrives, delivered by Bok-ju, and Joon-hyung looks shocked to see her working. He looks closely and notices that she seems tired, and decides not to taunt her this time.

He tells her to sit and he’ll taste the chicken before deciding whether to pay. He’s trying to be nice and give her a rest, but he comes across sounding like a jerk. Bok-ju says that it’s her treat since she owes him a favor anyway, just so she can leave.

Joon-hyung rightly feels like an ass and runs after her, but he’s too late. So he walks all the way to her chicken place, complaining that he should have just paid her. He finally finds it, and he stops when he sees her outside talking to her dad.

Dad tells Bok-ju to go on back to school, and she gives Dad some money, lying that the students paid with cash. Now Joon-hyung feels even more like a heel, but he smiles after her, thinking that she’s a good daughter.

The weightlifters sigh at the tiny bus they’ve been given to ride to the training center. They pile onto the bus, whining loudly, but Coach Yoon decides that this won’t do. He gets off and secures them a larger, more comfortable bus from the school, but he has to agree to reduce the team’s operating cost by thirty percent to get it.

Coach Choi is upset by the deal, and Coach Yoon tells her that they’re to cut back on their food expenses. The kids need to eat well to build muscle, but Coach Yoon tries to stay positive and says that eating less will motivate them.

Joon-hyung leads another group of friends to Bok-ju’s dad’s chicken place, and he spots the wall of pictures and trophies of Bok-ju’s many wins. He smiles at them, and you can practically see the hearts in his eyes. He pays afterward, and gives Dad extra money, vaguely mumbling that he owes him from before. Okay, I forgive you, you sweet thing.

After training, the weightlifters remind the coaches that they promised to feed them dinner after practice. They’re disappointed when they get one measly hamburger each, having been promised barbecue.

Coach Choi feels bad when she sees big boy Hyung-chul eat his burger in one bite. She gives him hers, claiming to be full from lunch. Coach Yoon loses his temper again, and says they’re going to eat barbecue.

Joon-hyung sees ex-girlfriend Shi-ho as he’s walking across campus, and his face goes still when she approaches him. He manages a smile and says she looks well. She says she came back because she missed him, and that makes him tense and tell her not to feel him out.

Shi-ho backs off and says she was kidding, but admits that she’s glad to see him. They agree that they won’t ignore each other when they meet on campus, and Joon-hyung leaves.

Shi-ho practices alone, repeating her moves over and over and flubbing them every time. Finally she loses her temper and shoves an entire chocopie in her mouth, fuming.

Over dinner, Bok-ju explains to the hoobaes that there’s a proper way to eat barbecue. They have the proper order down to a science, so they don’t get too full and lose out on any part of the meal. It’s pretty impressive how much food these girls can pack away.

Joon-hyung goes to his parents’ pharmacy and begs for food, then at home he opens his top dresser drawer and takes out the lace handkerchief. He replaces it carefully and takes out a stack of postcards, all signed, “From Mom.”

He goes swimming with his cousin Jae-yi, and complains when Jae-yi almost beats him. Jae-yi splashes him and says that he knows Joon-hyung went easy on him, though Joon-hyung gives him credit for being in great shape.

Joon-hyung gets touchy when Jae-yi compliments him on being a great swimmer, so after their workout, he brings Joon-hyung a drink and sits to talk. Joon-hyung admits that race starts make him nervous, and asks if he would just be an average college student if he weren’t a swimmer.

He says that he’s feeling restless since swimming isn’t going well lately, and Jae-yi asks if he misses his mother. Joon-hyung’s eyes grow sad, and she says that of course he does, but that he loves “our mom.” Ah, so the people he calls Mom and Dad must be Jae-yi’s parents, and are actually Joon-hyung’s aunt and uncle.

Coach Choi finds Coach Yoon sleeping in their office in the morning, and fusses at him to go home. He’s divorcing his wife for signing as a guarantor for a friend without talking to him, but Coach Choi thinks he should reconcile with her. But she’s really upset about him spending his own money to buy the team barbecue, and says she’ll figure out how to make their new budget work.

Bok-ju stops at the fountain to make another wish, and Joon-hyung shows up again. He asks what she’s wishing for, and when she refuses to tell him, he backs off this time. Instead of teasing her, he just wishes her good luck with training, leaving her confused by the change in his behavior.

Coach Choi brings snacks to practice, and passes out kimbap to the entire team. Coach Yoon declines one, and the kids complain that the kimbap tastes funny. Coach Choi tells them that she just bought it from a different shop, and barks at them to eat.

After practice, contentious sunbae Ki-seok confronts Joon-hyung about his turning down the offer to become his rival’s private training partner. He tells Joon-hyung that he should have taken the offer because it would have brought him money and the opportunity to travel, but figures Joon-hyung is too arrogant to know better.

Joon-hyung doesn’t respond, but he quivers with emotion at Ki-seok’s words. After Ki-seok leaves, Joon-hyung’s ears ring like when he’s having an attack on the starting block, and he just barely manages to tamp it down.

Jae-yi talks to Joon-hyung’s physical therapist Dr. Go, who says that she thinks Joon-hyung could benefit from psychotherapy. But athletes tend to resist that idea, so she suggests that Jae-yi talk to him about it, since he has a way of getting people to take his advice.

She puts a medicated patch on her foot and wrinkles it badly, so Jae-yi removes it and puts a fresh one on. Dr. Go seems a bit flustered by his attention, understandably.

Joon-hyung is surprised to see his cousin here, and they go out to talk. Jae-yi brings up Doctor Go’s idea of therapy, and though Joon-hyung doesn’t seem keen on the idea, he eventually agrees. It’s raining when they leave the building, and Joon-hyung gives Jae-yi his umbrella.

Walking down the street, Bok-ju passes by a handwritten sign, asking for the return of their missing vanity table. HAHA, Dad did take it! He pouts that he really thought it was abandoned, and Bok-ju grouchily heads back out in the rain to return the heavy desk.

As she waits at a crosswalk, a hand reaches out to shelter her under an umbrella, and she turns to see Jae-yi offering to help. She declines, but he carefully keeps the umbrella over her head all the way across the street. Bok-ju shoots him nervous glances, which he seems not to notice.

He insists on escorting her wherever she’s going, saying that otherwise he’ll look bad for letting a woman carry heavy furniture alone. From Bok-ju’s nervous reaction, it’s the first time anyone has ever called her a woman that way, and she suddenly notices his handsome face and nice voice.

Just as Bok-ju lifts the dresser again, a car comes by and splashes a wave of water at them. Jae-yi quickly moves to get between Bok-ju and the water, and Bok-ju’s heart starts pounding so hard she worries that Jae-yi will hear it.

He carries the dresser the rest of the way, and leaves it near the sign. It’s cute how he hands Bok-ju the umbrella, and she carefully follows his tiniest move with it to keep him covered. He finishes and tells her to keep the umbrella, and she’s so flustered that she goes the wrong way, hee.

Bok-ju’s happy bubble bursts when Seon-ok calls to tell her that the entire weightlifting team is in the hospital. She rushes over to find them all moaning and green, sick from food poisoning from the kimbap they ate. Luckily it’s mild, but Coach Choi is wracked with guilt — she bought the ingredients on clearance and made the kimbap herself, and everyone got sick.

Later Bok-ju helps her friends back to their dorm, and they wonder why Coach Choi would make food for them rather than buying as usual. Bok-ju is curious too, and makes a call to their team sunbae, Woon-ki.

Back at the gym, Coach Choi admits to Coach Yoon that she bought the expired ingredients trying to save money. But Coach Yoon blames himself for not fighting harder for their budget. Suddenly the entire team enters, and they line up to talk to the coaches.

Woon-ki says that Bok-ju told them about the budget cut, and Seon-ok steps forward to the team’s new plan. They’ve decided to only have a snack every three days, and to keep it simple and cheap, and otherwise to provide their own food. They’ll also use things like toilet paper at their dorms, and eat at Bok-ju’s restaurant at a discount. Aww, they’re so sweet.

Coach Yoon nearly cries, but Coach Choi snaps that they had no right to have a secret meeting. She’s more embarrassed than angry, and when the kids all say they’ll be more thoughtful, Coach Yoon tells them to use this as motivation to work even harder.

Bok-ju arrives back at her room to find roommate Shi-ho already asleep, and she quietly lies on her bed to swoon over her encounter with Jae-yi. She gets up and opens the umbrella, trying not to make noise and failing when it opens with a loud snap, ha. She adorably (and silently) re-enacts their conversation, then makes even more noise closing the umbrella again.

Joon-hyung meets with his new counselor (cameo by Park Won-sang) and fills out a long form before they get started. The therapist teases that he feels burdened by counseling such a promising swimmer, then tells him he has to finish the forms in an hour. Yeep!

At a call from Uncle Dae-ho, Bok-ju runs home in a blind panic, worried about her father. But it was just a ploy to get her there to see the brand-new vanity that they bought, fair and square. She only angry for a second, then admires her new vanity.

On her way back to school, Bok-ju sees Jae-yi jog through the same crosswalk where they met. On impulse she follows him all the way to his office, and learns that he’s a doctor. She shuffles back to school, dejected, thinking that Jae-yi is too far above her.

Her friends greet her, ready to go have lunch. Bok-ju tells herself that Jae-yi is in a different class, and chides herself for even hoping for anything. But something comes over her and she turns around, and she marches all the way back to his office with a new fire in her eyes.

She makes an appointment, and as soon as she walks into his office, Jae-yi recognizes her. He seems genuinely glad to see her, and invites her to sit.

Bok-ju takes the bull by the horns, and tests out Nan-hee’s tip about piquing a guy’s interest, asking, “Do you like [soccer star] Messi?”

COMMENTS

Oh, she’s just so terribly young and awkward, I want to cringe and look away, and hug her at the same time! This crush will go nowhere good, even if it didn’t involve the cousin of the guy who’s already crushing on Bok-ju. Still, I can’t help but want to see more hapless-in-love Bok-ju, because she’s just the cutest thing ever.

Speaking of Joon-hyung, I just love it when the guy falls in love first, and Joon-hyung is sooo falling for Bok-ju. He was having way too much fun pulling Bok-ju’s pigtails for it to be anything but infatuation, and that’s before he went all mooshy looking at her shelf of trophies at the restaurant, or started following her all over town. But he seems like the sort of guy who doesn’t have much trouble with the ladies, so I’m actually glad that Bok-ju didn’t just fall into his arms and is developing a crush on someone else. Things come way too easily to Joon-hyung, and he could stand to be forced to work for something he wants, for once. And I have to admire him for being mature enough to stop teasing Bok-ju once he saw how hard she works, and treating her better after that.

I’m very interested to find out more about Joon-hyung’s backstory, and what his convoluted home life is all about. We don’t have many clues about his mother other than the lace handkerchief, the postcards, and his periodic dizzy spells. Which, by the way, seem to be getting worse — at first we were told that they only happen occasionally during competitions, but now he’s had one after being confronted by Ki-seok. What caused it, and why does it only happen at certain times and not others? And I wonder if his nervous reaction to the idea of traveling has something to do with the postcards his mother sends him.

I’m really curious about Shi-ho, too — she’s still very much a mystery at this point. What we know is that she left school to train for the national rhythmic gymnast team, but failed to make the cut, and that’s why she’s now sharing a room with Bok-ju. Based on their few interactions, Shi-ho and Bok-ju look like an awkward match, with Bok-ju being boisterous and open and Shi-ho so closed-off and delicate. We know that she and Joon-hyung used to date, and that their breakup left behind some pretty hurt feelings, at least on his part. But it also seems that she still has feelings for him, so I’m interested to see if she’ll decide to pursue him just as he’s developing an interest in Bok-ju, or if he’ll get confused between the two girls all on his own.

But Bok-ju continues to be my favorite part of this show — she’s just so awkwardly relatable as she starts to learn about life beyond weightlifting. Her instant crush on Jae-yi was just so charmingly awkward, and who can blame her? He came out of nowhere like a hero, flashing that dimpled smile, and she didn’t have a chance. I thought her reaction to her feelings was perfectly on point, so much so that it reminded me of my own youthful infatuations, and even her little re-enactment of their walk through the rain made me cringe in empathy. I hope that, however Bok-ju’s love life turns out, that she never loses that girlish wonder at her own feelings.

This episode wasn’t quite as cute and fluffy as the first, but we got a lot more meaty information, and I found it didn’t interest me any less to begin delving into the more serious aspects of the story. As I said before, Episode 1 got me pretty invested in these characters and their struggles, so I still enjoyed this follow-up and learning more about all of our players. I find Joon-hyung’s schoolboy crush on Bok-ju adorable, his lingering attachment to Shi-ho interesting, and Bok-ju’s explosive reaction to Jae-yi painfully delicious. I can’t wait to see how these kids start to untangle all of their already complicated romantic knots.

This is shaping up to be a really cute, heartwarming drama. Even the coaches are hitting that sweet spot for me. Thanks so much for the recaps!!

It is delightful, I'm already waiting for next week.

I actually burst out laughing at Bok Joo's 'Do you like Messi?' and her facial expression. So funny.

Super cute Joon Hyung obviously has as crush already and like a tiny boy child is teasing her for attention. I have a feeling his adorable child self was probably nicer and more mature than he is at the moment.

I quit Episode 1 when the mean-girlery began in earnest, then skipped to Episode 2. I enjoyed this a lot because of Joon-hyung. I haven't quite fallen in love (the way I did with, say, Go Nan-gil in "The Man Living in Our House"), but he's adorable. Whenever he smiles, my insides melt. And I love that he's into Bok-ju already. (I said this in the comments for Episode 1, but I'll say it again: he reminds me of my all-time favorite Japanese actor, Sakaguchi Kentaro.)

I first watched Lee Sung-kyung in "Cheese in the Trap," and I liked her there. There was one moment where I saw a flash of Baek In-ha in this character, but I think Lee Sung-kyung is doing a great job of inhabiting Bok-ju. I wish this drama all the best and hope they stay strong and keep doing well in the face of the juggernaut that is "Legend of the Blue Sea."

OH MY GOD Lee Sung-kyung was the actress who played Baek In-ha?!?!?!?!? Everything makes so much sense now - I had a niggling feeling that the actress looked familiar when I first saw her, and I felt like I'd seen some of her facial expressions before, but I just couldn't place her so I just shrugged it off.....but OH MY GOD SHE WAS BAEK IN-HA. She's a completely different person here!! I feel stupid for not recognising her now, LOL.

Me too. I didnt plan watching this, but here i am.. With my full expectation for thr next episodes.

Actuallu, i've expected the rating would be low when i heard that their competitor is blue sea. I totally skipped the other one since it's a melodrama ught.. I watched both blue sea and this one but this one got all my interest more than blue sea. I have to admit that JJH is such a great actress. She's one of the best but then lee sung kyung makes me forget her bitchy annoying character as inha in citt. Wow.. Her acting is totally on point as kim bokjoo.

For me, handsome guys are never wrong, so i wont comment on the boys hahaha but boys fall in love first, hmm.. Totally my cup of tea.

Agree! I'm finding this to be such a delightful and refreshing drama. All the characters are well developed and I find myself caring about each character and their story.

Love how the coaches and weightlifting team support each other. Especially hilarious the way Coach Choi is no-nonsense and gets to the point when Professor Yoon rambles :)

Wow my first ever DB comment, I find the characters so lovable and cute; plus it's great to see a lead LSK who gives a great sense of warmth for her character. Let's see how this unfolds!!

I swear Joon-hyung's crush is so evident, complete with neon signboard screaming OMG KIM BOK-JU IS THE CUTEST PERSON ON EARTH I LOVE HER SO MUCH, so it's a matter of time before someone notices. I'm hoping it's Seon-ok and Nan-hee first because of all the face-palming to follow. He really is having so much fun pulling at Bok-ju's pigtails eh? But I did go awww at the part where Joon-hyung virtually melts at all of Bok-ju's awards and medals--falling in love with an athlete who is just as accomplished (maybe even more so) as he is? SUPER CUTE.

Hahaha at the W references during Lee Jong-seok's cameo. Aspiring Actor Uncle is the funniest side character ever, I swear.

I'm also really interested in Joon-hyung's mum mystery, as well as his and Shi-ho's past relationship. Their romance seemed to have ended rather badly, given how they're both trying to be ~mature~ about it but sort of failing at the same time. I don't think Shi-ho is serious competition for Bok-ju at this point, but I'd like a window into Joon-hyung's past all the same.

Do I sense a crush on Coach Yoon's side as well? As well as the in-house doctor on Jae-yi? All cute though haha. Anyway I think the weightlifting coaches are a gift for the team and vice versa--the scene where the team decides to help shoulder the burden of dwindling budgets is really touching. Work together and you can rule the world, weightlifting team!!!

Sidenote: I really like how Nan-hee's actress Cho Hye-jung is slowly building up her portfolio after being torn down super badly by netizens for her debut role opposite Yoo Seung-ho. I do appreciate that she's taking on small but suitable roles that actually help hone her skills, instead of going down the, y'know, pulling-the-strings path and squandering away meatier lead roles that could have gone to better actresses. And she's really adorable as Nan-hee too! I'll keep an eye out for her from now on.

Call me dramatic but well... my heart aches seeing the ratings. This is Come Back Mister all over again. Being crushed by a giant powerhouse of a drama (am I exaggerating???). My concern is that I don't want the actors, especially LSK to feel disheartened as this is her first leading role and she's the titular character. She's giving off such heartwarming characterization to BokJu, that I'm just rooting for her all the way. I just hope that even if the ratings would never get to double digits, that the cast won't think their drama is a failure (though that remains to be seen, since there are only two episodes).

I KNOW RIGHT?! IM SO ROOTING FOR THESE TWO. Not only is it their first drama but also you can feel it that they're giving this their all. If it weren't against Legends this would so be like Moonlight!! It could still rise in ratings though but depth and story wise I dunno. I love highschool dramas like Sassy Go Go so I know I'm gonna fall in love with this show too (who am I kidding, I love this already lol) <3 I HOPE THEY KNOW THAT even if the ratings wouldn't reach record breaking there are fans all over the world rooting for them and for this show :)

While I do hope that the ratings will go up in the upcoming episodes, I'm honestly more concerned if the drama got cut down on its show time. I'm not affected by the ratings because I'm an international viewer after all, but just imagine shows I enjoy like Hello Monster being cut makes me bitter. I'm glad Hello Monster finishes its run without suffering from any meddling from the broadcasting station, and I pray for the same happy ending for Fairy too.

My heart aches too! I don't think its realistic to expect the ratings to be above 10% but I'm really digging for this drama because it is just too cute! It's like an adorable baby that brings me giggles and at the same time, I will want to protect it from 'criticims' (or the lack of it = out of public's eyes). I really want to let the leads/PDs/scriptwriter/MBC's head know that even if the ratings are low, they have international audience (and MBC can milk us to earn their profits). I'm just worried that the drama might be cut short because of the low ratings. And the actors and actresses may be disheartened from the ratings because it's a live shoot.

SAME. I know that all three channels airing new shows at the same day is a factor to it, but this show definitely deserves more attention. Even though I've only seen two episodes I can easily say that this is my favorite character for LSK so I hope she doesn't feel down about taking the role.

It's a shame about the ratings but we all knew that whatever MBC put in the slot against LOTBS was basically going to be cannon fodder against that drama the way Miss Korea (also a fantastic drama and possibly MBC's best of 2013) was against YFAS.

But I do hope Lee Sung-kyung gets more shots at lead after this. She's promising, and has the potential to be a star for more than just her looks.

I think she would take it more positively.. She dont hope for much either

anyway there's a lot more show out there in 2015 not doing well in terms of rating too.. had seen some shows which is pretty good, yet it only peak/average out at 5% with no major competitor..

at least this is some major competition.. so not that bad..

I personally think it's a smart career move on both LSK and NJH's part actually. They don't have much to lose, mainly because it's going against LOBS.

1) LSK is getting her break as a lead. That's the hardest transition really, as you can see from so many talented actors/actresses that get stuck as the second lead. Now that she's had her first lead role, she's likely to be considered for more lead roles in the future as opposed to just second leads. Similarly, NJH's returning to male lead after his stints as supporting characters due to his acting criticisms. I think they're both doing a good job of this so far.

2) Not to mention, it's a good change in character and chance for her to prove her critics wrong. She can experiment with a more "likeable" character and avoid getting typecasted as the mean, b*tchy characters (though she is so fun in those roles too!). I mean, I can't be the only one who finds it amazing when comparing her Baek In Ha vs Kim Bok Joo right?

3) It's obvious their drama is the underdog in the time slot. So far it's received a lot of praise so as long as they carve out a niche, that's already a win and it'll just be seen as Come Back Ahjusshi - a good drama swallowed by a more popular drama. If they can pull a Moonlight and actually take the lead, that's an even bigger win. They're rising stars vs the likes of LMH and JJH and OJH - no one is going to blame them if they don't live up to the veterans.

Indeed, LSK is great. She was hilarious as Baek In-Ha and at the same time she managed to be poignant at some moments and made me care for the character. I thought she was really talented and never understood all the criticism. It's good that she took a role so different this time.

I also thought that NJH was decent in Scarlet Heart and he has this cute charm that makes me want to cuddle him. Together they are as cute as a basket of kitties :D and the story seems perfect for us to enjoy the romance and the laughs. Two bad there are only two episodes per week!

Personal opinion,

One reason i felt DOTS did well as it did ( as in ratings kept increasing even though it became clear after ep 8 that there wasn't much of 'soldier' or'doctor' drama...) in the later run was because there was zero competition..

Come back ajushi had the starpower but content wise was very very weak..atleast one half of that storyline wasn't even funny..while the other half was trying to hold it..

Same with Moonlight, Moonlight had the starpower (PBG is big enough and he did bring in the initial numbers before the other drama messed up and other cast members turned on their appeal in clouds) ... had the starpower and the other drama royally screwed itself..

HOWEVER, here honestly the starpower is zilch.. both compared to LOTBS and compared to other dramas that were a hit or a miss (DOTS/CMA, CLouds/Scarlet)... AND YET content wise this is much more robust (characters, wrting, direction etC)..

If LOTBS continues the same way, and word of mouth spread.. hopefully this drama can improve in ratings..

I have heard the third drama is good too..and hopefully will appeal to older generation..

I hate seeing good stuff losed out in ratings to starpower.. (be it scarlet - i loved it but was very happy that ratings did not come through.. the editing team and director need that lesson!)

Loving this cute drama!! Joon-hyung and Bok-ju are super adorable. Both actors are doing good work. I grin at their interactions especially the ones after he realizes who she is.

Who wouldn't want Jae-yi as a brother or boyfriend? Totes understand the ladies crushing on him.

I've been refreshing the page like a hopeless obsessed fan girl to see this recap.

Am I the only person who enjoys the second ep more than the first? Now that we're getting more into the story and with two crushes unfolding the game has been upped to another notch. I really really enjoy the interactions among the members of the weightlifting club too. They're like a big family to one another and I love how the kids respect their professors. It really is very heartwarming. I also enjoy the youthful humour a lot, kind of reminds me of my college days.

LSK is so relatable as Bok-Joo. I still am not 100% convinced by NJH's acting but if he does anything well it's the look of someone freshly in love. I find his crush on BJ believable.

Show, please keep up the good job. I'm enjoying this very much.

Forgot to add "How's your shoulder?"

[spoilers]
For those who haven't seen School 2015, Nam Joo-Hyuk was the male lead, playing a high school swim champ, so his character there pretty much leads straight into his character here. At various times he was linked to both the twins played by Kim So-Hyun. He had shoulder problems instead of psychological issues.

Jo Soo-Hyang was stunning as the villain -- one of the best baddies ever. But she had to transfer schools when some of her evil deeds came to light. I started this show mostly to see if she would recapture that magic -- so far she hasn't. In ep 1 she just seemed like the kind of annoying obnoxious-just-to-be-obnoxious painful-to-watch baddy than normally makes me drop a series.

i've been watching both this and Legend of the Blue Sea (LOBS). i really must say weightlifting fairy kim bok ju (WFKBJ) has won me over these last two episodes. while LOBS has been somewhat entertaining--i've summed up episode 1 as the ocean is pretty and episode 2 as spain is pretty--it hasn't quite pulled me in. i think it was to be expected that LOBS would be pulling in the ratings, but this drama has a little more heart: the relationships between friends, the first love crushes, and the proud but somewhat frugal papa. the first two eps of this week will be WFKBJ FTW! i'm excited for next week's episodes already. (i thought i might go into jealousy incarnate withdrawal but my week has been filling out just fine...hehehe)

Weightlifting Fairy draws me in more. If you look at the overall coherence (I'm not sure if this is even the word I'm looking for), WF is more solid. Also, WF has this nostalgic vibe which tugs at my heartstrings. I'm not saying that LotBS isn't good, because it is but then, I think a huge part of this can be attributed to its actors.

Thanks for the recap, Lollypip! You always seem to recap the shows I like :)

This show is just bursting with adorableness, and I'm really hoping it doesn't get too overly-angsty with the twisted lovelines. It has so much heart already with the coaches and teams, and so much potential. A great cast of side characters with interesting developments and stories of their own are almost always what sell me on a drama, so fingers crossed this show keeps it up!

LSK is really killing it. I've only ever seen her as In Ha from Cheese in the Trap, and this role is a complete 180 from that. She is selling the cute awkwardness.

NJH is a total cutie, and he's also doing a good job. Keep up the school boy antics - but maybe stop calling her Chubs!

God, I love Bok Ju's family. They have that tough love kind of relationship and it's super adorable. Plus the moment that her father trolled her just to show her the new vanity they got (did they steal it this time? Oh god, the possibilities!) was HILARIOUS.

Still loving the interactions with the squad, as usual. The BFN technique sounds really effective (and delicious!), so I should try that next time I get some Korean BBQ!

And I originally thought that the Weightlifting team having a low budget would be sort of a secondary storyline to the show. I'm a little surprised that it was resolved quickly, but at the same time it's perfect. The weightlifting team needs more happiness~

If it happens in real life, I don't seen why the drama needs to omit those elements... This isn't Disney channel. I think it makes it more real to have that kind of teasing, because that's what happens irl...

I know it's definitely not great for people struggling with weight issues. But I think this show hasn't crossed any line that should provoke an outrage.

a lot of people are called chubs while growing up. I totally relate to that kind of situation that bok joo experiences. The teasing name stays even when puberty slims you down. i think the drama makes it playful instead of harmful.

hmm i didnt feel outraged at it- this coming from me who struggled with weight issues and was chubby in her teens.
Joon Hyung uses it goodnaturedly- akthough yes hes teasing her- but really as a name that he's familiar with from their childhood. I dont thk he thinks of her as fat right now.
Chubs is way better than fatty or fatso for sure.
If later on, bok joo calls him out that the nickname hurts her feeling (esp if he uses it in front of her crush); im sure he would apologize and not do it again

Required fields are marked *

Yes, I agree..and there's that cultural element that isn't exactly translatable. I live in America and have since I was 16, but my whole other families live in South East Asia region. In there, it's absolutely acceptable and not seen as being rude to make comments about people's weight as soon as you see them, if they're friends or related to you. So if I just come back to visit, the first thing I often would hear is "Hi, nomad. Wow, you've gained weight! (or you've lost weight, depending on what ever is the case)". I suspect this might be the case in SK too.

0

Maybe because it definitely perpetuates horrible attitudes about weight (especially since she isn't even fat???) for girls and young women who are watching this show?

I like how in Oh My Venus they adressed the issue a little bit, and then So Ji-sub character who was more concerned about Shi Min-a's health than everything else.

In the end of the drama, when she is fat again, and he just loves her either way, it's the cutest.

0

Required fields are marked *

actually I don't think he was referring to the current Kim bok joo as chubs; it's just because the nickname stays. If you look at young Bok Joo, she isn't fat yes, but she's chubby. Joon Hyung also mentioned in some part that he thought she would've grown sideways or something but I just think it's supposed to just be fun and not meant to be harmful. XP besides he stopped already :) don't know if he'll continue though

0

Required fields are marked *

Just because it's "not meant to be harmful" doesn't mean it's not harmful.

but I personally feel that him calling her 'Chubs' isn't as bad as those gymnasts looking down on how they look or just rolling their eyes at how much they eat, I mean it's evident that joon hyung is just calling her that for the fun of it (because he definitely doesn't think she's fat now), with no bad intention but those gymnasts do, so isn't that worse? :/ Also, I think this adds a realistic element to the show because this really does happen in real life ( I get called that many times too) where kids just don't know better; and this makes me like bok joo even more because she's strong about it which leaves a positive impact.

0

He did stop when asked. No need to stretch it unnecessarily. I had several nick names growing up chubby, they stayed and no, I know myself better to not be affected by it. Do some people take it to their heart?? Surely, but in the context of the drama here, it was a light teasing which has stopped so we can all relax I think.

I personally feel that dramas like this, where the heroine is chubby/fat but is still, you know, the "heroine" of her own story, makes people feel less upset or ashamed about being chubby. It shows that you don't have to be thin or conform to mainstream beauty standards to be loved, or to have friends, or to have a successful life/career.

I agree, I think the way KBJ is portrayed and her attitude to it is very realistic. She's annoyed at the nickname, but she has no desire to stick-thin or tiny like the rhythmic gymnasts either. She even endorses that they're more curvy as it's a good thing.

I think the fat-shaming is not ignored, but it's showing that KBJ's got a good head on her shoulders and is not bothered purely by her looks. She knows her worth. What's wrong with being chubs? I prefer that the drama includes it and deals with it because it shows that there are different attitudes than just being hurt over it. I know it's not pleasant being called names, but that's how kids really are, and JJH's character is doing it to annoy her and not maliciously.

I was really craving for something uplifting and heartwarming in this gloomy weather, and finally here it is! Lee Sung-kyung's Kim Bok-joo is so adorable, and everyone in the cast is doing a wonderful job! (Even the jerky boyfriend from Age of Youth, he's still a coward as a friend but I've started to warm up to his new funny role now.)

I actually liked this episode more than the first, most probably because I didn't feel so anxious like walking on thin ice with the gymnastic side. This had more heart, put smiles on my face, and touched my heart. Even Shi-ho, I might even up disliking her later on, but for now I think she's somehow achingly beautiful. She reminded me of Min Hyo-rin in Goong - my most favorite role from Song Ji-hyo.

The gentleman was so nice to share his umbrella. Then he went and call her a lady- making her notice her own female self- then she notices his good looks, dimple and mannerism. Poor gal din hav a chance.
Then theres Joon Hyung and his self-unidentified interest and affection to Bokjoo. I wouldnt go and say theres love at this point. But theres hearts in his eyes when he looks at her, her medals/trophies and her good relationship with her dad.
Then theres the weightlifting team. I love the coaches. I love the show took the time to highlight the team's struggle with budget cuts, how the coach tries to cope and the eventual very sweet decision by all members of the team to pitch in and help out during this tight difficult period.
The show's giving me so many love handles. Safe to say im hooked and buckled in for more.

Loved all the w references as well. I think lee jon seok told bok ju's uncle that he had seen him somewhere he was referring to the part where the same actor played a doctor in w but the drama nicely connected it to the character's wannabe actor status, lol.

This drama is really making me appreciate Lee Sung-kyung. I always have immense respect for pretty actresses who are unafraid to "unpretty" themselves for a role. She's still pretty as Bok-ju, of course, but I love how she has changed her whole demeanor to fit the role. You go, girl!

And Nan-hee is also SOOO CUTE. I love her. Honestly, I can't believe she hasn't found a guy to fall for her yet! C'mon, any guy would be lucky to have her. She's so cute and sweet!

Thanks for the recap, LP!

I'm invested in these characters as well. Each one seems to have his/her own story and growing up to do. I really wanna know the cause of JH's trauma that leads to the ear-ringing that seems to totally arrest him, heavy breathing, faster heartbeating, and all. I suppose his mom is in Canada, and for whatever reason, only sends postcards instead of visiting him. At least, his cousin's parents treat him well. I didn't realize they were cousins at first since he just calls him hyung. So, I got confused by the Mom thing. Good to have this cleared up through the recaps. =)

I'm also curious what happened between SH and JH, wondering if it's one of those I gotta pursue my dreams situations, so I need to break up with you and leave you behind... Anyway, I'm glad to see that after recognizing BJ, JH is teasing her and following her like a puppy. He really seems very fond of her and I like that he's just a sweet boy with a crush though his actions come across like a jerk at times.

It's great to see BJ crushing on the cousin JY first. I agree with you that the romance shouldn't come so easy for JH. I think any girl in BJ's situation would've fallen hard for JY, who's like a knight in shining armour.

LJS's cameo make me laugh so hard, especially when he actually remembers DH from a weekend drama extra role... ROFL at all the meta. XD

Thank you so much for recapping this show! And been enjoying reading everyone's comments.

So far I'm impressed with Lee Sung-Kyung, such a spirited and natural performance. I previously saw her in Queen's Flower and got irritated with her amateur acting so I hesitated watching this drama, but she has shown she's developed a lot!

And Nam Joo-Hyuk is such a sweetie, love the way he teases Bok Ju the way boys tease the girls they secretly crush on. At first I was confused if Lee Jae-Yoon was his brother or cousin but now it's clarified, can't wait to find out what happened to his birth parents and what's causing him to have those panic episodes??

And does anyone else find that they get really hungry while watching this drama? All the bbq, fried chicken, kimbap (well at first until I saw what happened to the team later lol) is making want to go to the nearest Korean place and order food to eat while I watch the show :P

Argh I remember watching Queen's Flower too, it was one of LSK early roles and painful to watch at times. Agree she is doing better here.

Sidenote: Now I realize where I seen the actress who plays Coach Choi the assistant coach. The actress, Jang Young-Nam was in Queen's Flower with LSK. She is almost unrecognizable here looking 10 years younger. She played the villain who tormented and beat up LSK. Nice to see they have a fun and friendly relationship here.

Can't wait for Wednesday to come soon...

Thanks for the recap Lollypip! :)

I was psyched for this drama when I saw the teasers on Dramabeans and I was not disappointed after watching the first 2 episodes.

(Although I did "cheat" by reading your recap for ep 1 first to suss out the drama)

This is my first time watching something with Lee Sung Kyung in it and I'm loving her. She's aceing the role of a carefree, tomboyish sporty gal. - swag-

I have decided that this drama would be my year end indulgence after 1% of Anything ends next week.

Here's to WFKBJ to continue with its potrayal of heartwarming school life replete with the ups and downs of close friendships, first loves/crushes and of course studies (or in their case, sports trainings).

Thanks for the recap! I am always excited to read your recaps because it makes me anticipate the actual show and if there's anything bad happen, I don't feel too bad about it. (Not to mention that you are recapping all of my fav ongoing drama right now)

I love /love/ this show. I thought this would be another cheesy drama with little to no plot other than love (love at first sight or sth) but I was wrong.

I love Lee Sung Kyung's acting and Nam Joo Jyuk's. It's refreshing to see them on screen. I love their potrayal of the characters, it feels relatable and light.

A lot of dramas this year is following a trend where the male and female lead fell in love / become interested in each other on the first ep and constantly bickers with each other throughout the story with some sexual tensions going on, but no plot is going on much (or they're trying to build it but it ended up being, who cares, let's just show the viewers these 2 together and some occasional secondary characters teasing or fueling their feelings or having mini backstory that can be resolved in 1-2 eps. and some rival. yes. ok back to the plot. love saves all. all is resolved in the last 1-2 eps.)

But this story is new. I love how honest Bok-Ju is, she doesn't mind to apologize when she's wrong, she doesn't have that pride-before-everything traits that main characters usually have. And her growing crush on Jae Yi is super cute (although I am rooting for Joon Hyung). I can't wait for the next episode, I want to see the backstory behind Joon Hyung's problem. I also love the other things going on in this drama, I enjoy her quirky friends, and the coaches. Especially the coaches.

I feel bad for Lee Jae Yoon because this is the third drama I watched with him being the 2nd male lead (Another Miss Oh, Heart to Heart, this drama), I think he deserves a spotlight too.

Also, Nam Joo Hyuk, I feel like he's growing into a fine actor. He's got a big potential and pretty face and I'm looking forward to see him in more dramas in the future (preferably with Ji Soo pls). He probably should not play a swimmer anymore because he's always suffering in one way or another lmao then again, the role might be his lucky charm to success.

This show made me stalk LSK & NJH! Only knew about NJH because of Moon Lovers (which I didn't actually watch - only followed the bits with KHN, haha). Was so glad to know they (LSK-NJH) are friends since before the show and have worked together in another drama.

(Read: wishing-they-become-a-real-couple-soon path)

When I learned that this show will be competing against LOTBS, I knew I would be sticking to Fairy. I have learned not to trust overly hyped Kdramas anymore. LOL. They give this feeling of being contrived just to prove that they are big budgeted dramas.

Alright, gotta stop saying bad about other dramas and back to my little lovely show.
