On the Way to the Airport: Episode 14
by SailorJumun
Oh man, this one’s a nail-biter for sure. More and more people are starting to find out about Su-ah and Do-woo’s relationship, and it’s not long before all the consequences they’d been fearing start catching up to them. Luckily, they both have some amazing friends on their side who are always there to give them a good hug or a much-needed push in the right direction.
EPISODE 14 RECAP
We rewind a bit to Jin-suk unwinding at home after work. He finds the framed ornament Grandma had gifted to Su-ah and tosses it aside, not thinking much of it.
After getting a call from Grandma Young-sook, he goes over to her house for dinner. He eats in a hurry so he can get out of there, but Young-sook wants to announce something: She’s planning her retirement and will be flying to New Zealand to live with Jin-suk’s sister.
Young-sook tells Jin-suk he can take her house along with Su-ah and Hyo-eun, but Jin-suk would rather keep things as they are and live separately. She can see that convincing her son is hopeless, so Young-sook finally breaks it to Jin-suk that Hyo-eun’s been attending a neighborhood school rather than an international one.
Jin-suk comes back home, thinking back to Su-ah’s words about moving to Jeju Island, and then Mi-jin’s words about Su-ah knowing about them. He scoffs at the fact that Su-ah would even use Mi-jin as an excuse to pull Hyo-eun out of school.
Hye-won hides away in her car in Jin-suk’s parking lot, watching Do-woo head into the apartment building. She calls Jin-suk, introducing herself as Annie’s mom. She tells him she wants to give him her thanks since Su-ah was with Grandma before her death, but that her husband will be coming in her place. She instructs him to open the door and hangs up.
By the time Do-woo figures out what Hye-won has done, he’s already on Jin-suk’s floor, and Jin-suk is already opening the door.
Jin-suk welcomes Do-woo inside, a friendly smile pasted on his face. Do-woo, on the other hand, doesn’t even bother to smile. Instead, his eyes land on the framed ornament resting on the couch. Jin-suk catches him staring at it and tosses it onto the table, saying it’s just something his wife had out.
This clearly bothers Do-woo, but he politely thanks Jin-suk for Su-ah’s kind actions. After getting a rather lackluster response from Jin-suk, Do-woo thinks back to Su-ah’s heated conversation with Mi-jin. The thought makes him pick up the ornament and gently place it on a shelf, on full display.
“Isn’t it a bit strange?” Jin-suk says behind him. Do-woo turns around to face him.
However, Jin-suk merely chuckles, referring to Do-woo coming here like Hye-won asked. He advises Do-woo not to do everything his wife says, otherwise there’s no end to it. Do-woo’s gaze is practically shooting daggers, but he somehow keeps it together to see himself out.
As soon as he exits the building, Do-woo gets a call from Hye-won. She says she can see him, and his eyes search the area until he spots her across the parking lot.
He marches straight to her, though he seems more hurt than angry. Hye-won asks if Do-woo feels like he might go crazy from having to hold his feelings in while in front of Jin-suk. “Why should you be like this?” Hye-won cries, “Why should the mighty Seo Do-woo live like this?” She tells him that she went to Jeju Island to give him the divorce he wanted, but…
We cut back to Jin-suk, witnessing the argument from his balcony. He’s amused with the sight until Hye-won’s face finally registers. Until the name “Do-woo” finally registers.
Jin-suk suddenly remembers meeting Hye-won in Australia and all the little hints she’d been sending him, as well as all the hints everyone around him, including Su-ah, has been sending him. “This doesn’t make sense,” he tries to tell himself.
Do-woo and Hye-won continue their conversation in the car. Hye-won can barely hold her tears back as she tells Do-woo that he’s still her husband, and she can’t understand why he’s willing to be sneered and pointed at, all for Su-ah. “Why must you do that? You think I’m giving you the divorce so you can do that?”
Even now, Hye-won knows that Do-woo is sitting here worrying about Su-ah, and how she must be suffering after coming across Hye-won. Hye-won isn’t bothered by that, but she hates thinking that Do-woo has to deal with the same thing. She begs him to come to his senses before she breaks down crying. Still unable to say anything, Do-woo puts a comforting hand on her shoulder.
Once Hye-won is calmer, she sits Do-woo down at the house so she can tell him the whole story – how she fled to Jeju in a state of panic, how she ran into Su-ah, and how she lashed out at her. And then Hye-won goes into the story of Annie’s birth, and how Annie truly was born out of love. But once Annie came into the world, Hye-won had been scared: “People say that when you have a baby, you forget about reality and only care about your baby. But I wasn’t like that. I thought it was the end.”
She couldn’t tell her mother about the baby, and she ended up getting severe depression. Annie’s father had known Hye-won wasn’t happy, so he’d said he would raise Annie and that Hye-won could forget all about them and live her life. So Hye-won jumped at the opportunity.
Hye-won dedicated her life to work and she soon erased Annie and the father out of her mind. So when Annie’s father was diagnosed with cancer and ultimately sent Annie to live with her, she claims, she was resentful.
That is, until Annie’s arrival got Do-woo to finally talk to Hye-won. And when Do-woo had asked who Annie was, Hye-won had uttered the words she’d buried for all those years: “She’s my daughter.”
Hye-won tells Do-woo that she regretted saying that all this time, and that she wished she’d just introduced Annie as some kid she knew. But now, she thinks calling Annie her daughter that day was the best thing she ever did.
We flash back to Hye-won storming into Grandma’s gallery after she’d slapped Su-ah, where she’d noticed the framed pictures of Annie and Grandma. With trembling hands, she’d hugged the frames to her chest and sobbed her heart out, the loss of her family hitting her all at once.
Like Do-woo said, Hye-won has been living full of fear and anxiety, and she’s tired of desperately clinging on. “That’s why I won’t hold onto you,” she says. And she means it. The next thing we know, Hye-won is handing Suk documents concerning the house and the exhibition. Lastly, she takes out the divorce papers, surprising Suk. Though she knows it may not mean much now, Hye-won thanks him for cherishing Annie.
As Do-woo walks Hye-won out, the mood is somewhat lighter. He tells her to call if she ever has any trouble, and she smiles. He also gives her a bag, saying the contents were found in Annie’s treasure chest and he remembered the item initially belonging to Hye-won. He watches her drive off and then looks up at the night sky. “I’m sorry,” he says to Annie, “that your mom and dad ended up this way.”
Hye-won opens the bag as soon as she returns to her office, finding the embroidered handkerchief she’d had out when she’d been in the café with Annie discussing their backstory. She then gets a text from Do-woo explaining that Annie had been trying to protect someone, and he found out who it was: Hye-won. Clutching onto the handkerchief, Hye-won is once again overcome with grief as she cries.
Do-woo wanders over to Hyun-woo’s bar in a daze. His buddy tries to cheer him up with some beer, but Do-woo can only think of how splitting up with Hye-won was supposed to make him happy and make everything all better. He figured it would also be sad, but he never expected to feel like this. He wonders how he’ll ever tell Su-ah about this feeling.
Back in Jeju, Su-ah and Mi-jin discuss Jin-suk after Hyo-eun’s in bed. Mi-jin explains that she’d been young and hopelessly in love, so she couldn’t let go of Jin-suk. It wasn’t until Su-ah came along that she came to her senses, and she was grateful for that. But then she’d noticed that Su-ah soon went through the same thing.
Su-ah admits that she did go through a similar process. There was even a time when she’d seen a picture of Jin-suk with another flight attendant, but she never brought it up because she was afraid he would leave. “Your song became mine,” Su-ah says, making them both smile.
Cut to: Su-ah and Mi-jin having a grand ole time singing karaoke. After some good laughs, Mi-jin asks if Do-woo’s going to divorce his wife. Su-ah assumes that Hye-won would never even consider it after running into her. But Su-ah does plan on splitting up with Jin-suk. She happily yells into her microphone that she’s going to live happily on the island with Hyo-eun. She and Mi-jin adorably celebrate her newfound independence with cheers and hugs. Aw, yay for girlfriends!
Su-ah sends Mi-jin off, though not before attempting to set her up with Kevin, hee. Soon afterward, she answers a call from Do-woo, who mentions he’s at Hyun-woo’s bar. He asks if she remembers the time he’d comforted her at the bar, back when Su-ah was stressing over Hyo-eun’s stay in Malaysia. Su-ah smiles at the memory and tells him that that was the first time he’d ever consoled her.
Do-woo notes that the weather in Seoul is different and that it’s entered a season of indecisiveness, so he tells Su-ah not to come. Su-ah guesses correctly that it must be chaotic over there, and she admits that she saw Hye-won. Do-woo takes a breath before saying he knows, and that he also saw Jin-suk, though he urges her not to worry about it.
He wishes that Su-ah could avoid all the pain and chaos he’s been experiencing. “I don’t know if this will comfort you,” he says, “but during this nasty November in Seoul, that’s all I can think about.” He promises they can discuss this further as soon as he returns to Jeju.
Jin-suk calls Young-sook and tells her to go ahead and fly to New Zealand as quickly as possible. He intends to follow her, along with Su-ah and Hyo-eun. Young-sook looks uncertain, but she agrees to do so anyway.
Hyo-eun watches from afar as her mom works hard in the clementine orchard. During Su-ah’s break, Hyo-eun voices sadly how exhausting it must be for Su-ah, but Su-ah insists she’s dealt with much more as a flight attendant. Either way, Hyo-eun thinks they should reconsider living here, which Su-ah quickly shuts down by saying she’s perfectly fine.
Later, Su-ah bids farewell to Mi-jin before she leaves the island. But Mi-jin stops and turns back to reveal that Do-woo is, in fact, getting a divorce. Since it was due to Hye-won’s lies, Mi-jin states that the couple was doomed to end even without Su-ah.
Mi-jin didn’t mention it earlier because she wanted to make sure Su-ah wanted a divorce for herself, and not just so that she could see Do-woo. Now that she knows where Su-ah stands, Mi-jin is on her side: “Choi Su-ah, it starts now. Don’t be affected by anything else. Just think of yourself.”
As Mi-jin walks away, her words remind Su-ah of when she’d asked Do-woo if he came to Jeju alone, and he’d said he would tell her later. Now she understands what he’s been going through all this time.
Kevin treats Mi-jin to a meal before she flies back, though he’s disappointed to hear she may not return since she used up all her vacation time on this one trip. Mi-jin sees where he’s going with this and tells him that he’s a nice guy, so he should find a nice girl. Kevin agrees – he likes nice girls who believe they’re nice. He tells Mi-jin to call him when she feels this way. Gah, you’re killing me with the sweetness, Kev.
Do-woo visits Annie to post a picture of the beautiful view from Grandma’s gallery. He promises Annie that he’ll always be there for Hye-won, and he hopes that Annie keeps watch over her.
Do-woo’s phone beeps and he sees that it’s a picture from Su-ah – the exact same view from the gallery – along with a message telling him to stay strong. He smiles and replies that he’ll tell her everything tomorrow. Su-ah reads the text and lets out a deep breath, bringing her gaze back to the view.
Jin-suk lets himself into Mi-jin’s apartment, but she’s not there. He tries to call her, and when she doesn’t answer, he gets this look on his face that kind of scares me.
Mi-jin is ignoring Jin-suk’s calls since she’s out eating with Je-ah. He asks what the occasion is, and she happily reports that she’s made up with Su-ah. Suspicious, Je-ah says that he’s often chased by noonas (lol) and wonders if Mi-jin is another case, but she insists that she likes someone else.
Mi-jin comes home to find an annoyed Jin-suk, who’s wondering if Su-ah is angry after finding out about them. Jin-suk figures that she must be, since Mi-jin was her best friend and this was more of a betrayal on Mi-jin’s part. Mi-jin angrily says that she is Su-ah’s best friend, and that Jin-suk is merely an ex-lover she couldn’t care less about now. She tells him to leave.
But Jin-suk’s not finished. He casually mentions that Do-woo came over to his apartment, confirming his suspicion with Mi-jin’s shocked reaction. “What I’ve been imagining these days is actually right?” he asks, his voice furious. He screams Do-woo’s name, wondering why he has to keep hearing the name of a guy he doesn’t even know. He demands that Mi-jin tell him everything, and Mi-jin retorts that Jin-suk doesn’t even care about Su-ah.
Just like that, Jin-suk’s anger subsides, though his voice is still shaking as he adds that as far he knows, his wife and daughter are living happily on Jeju Island. Nothing is certain until he sees it for himself.
Mi-jin can’t believe that they’re actually arguing about this. She cries that she’s tired of fussing over a jerk like him, and that she’ll never make the same mistake again. “You’re making a mistake now,” Jin-suk seethes. “Everything you do is a mistake.” He storms out, and as soon as the door slams shut, Mi-jin lets her tears fall.
We see Jin-suk arrive in Jeju and call the international school Su-ah supposedly enrolled Hyo-eun in, confirming that Hyo-eun is not on the roster.
He goes to Hyo-eun’s real school and confronts her about this, and she hilariously greets him in English as a final attempt to keep up the pretense. But he reveals that he already knows the truth. Hyo-eun tries to defend her mom, and it only seems to make Jin-suk angrier. He tells Hyo-eun to pack up and fly back to Seoul tomorrow.
Hyo-eun warns Su-ah of Jin-suk’s orders, and they tell each other to stay strong. Panicking, Su-ah then tries to call Jin-suk, but he’s ignoring her calls now. He has Kevin pick him up and drive him to where Su-ah is so he can see how she’s truly living.
They drive all the way to the orchard, where Jin-suk watches Su-ah from a distance as she works. He almost looks sad watching her, which Kevin takes note of. After a while, Kevin drives them back to the airport, and Jin-suk sighs that although Su-ah may be acting strong, she’s actually very fragile and weak. Hm.
That night, Jin-suk returns Su-ah’s call and listens to her apologize for lying about Hyo-eun’s school. He cuts her off, saying he knows she found out about him and Mi-jin. He decides to call it even – his past with Mi-jin against her lie about Hyo-eun. Um, dude? So not the same thing.
Jin-suk tells her that he’s being nice, and that he won’t tolerate any other mistakes. He then tells her to leave for Seoul tomorrow and hangs up before she can reply. He tells himself that for now, he just needs to get Su-ah and Hyo-eun back home.
Su-ah and Hyo-eun try to figure out what to do, and while Su-ah is adamant about staying, Hyo-eun admits that she wants to go back – Jin-suk knows now, and she hates seeing her mom suffer. She calls Jin-suk to ask for a few more days to pack.
Jin-suk begins to say he wants them back by tomorrow, until he spots Do-woo leaving the airport. Jin-suk gives Hyo-eun the answer she wants absently and hangs up so he can run after Do-woo.
He barely catches sight of Do-woo leaving in his truck and quickly gets in a taxi to follow him.
Do-woo arrives back at the gallery and calls Su-ah, asking if they can meet up. Su-ah tells him that her husband stopped by and ordered them to return to Seoul, so she thinks it’s best to stay at home tonight. They agree to talk again later after Su-ah insists she plans to stay in Jeju. Do-woo: “Don’t go.” Su-ah: “I won’t.”
Do-woo enters the gallery, only to hear a car screech to a halt outside… Oh phew, it’s just someone dropping off Do-woo’s car from Seoul.
Meanwhile, Hyo-eun finishes her homework and rests, also urging her mom to do the same. Su-ah stares out the window, repeating Hyo-eun’s words to herself. Deciding to go after the “rest” she wants, she rushes out the door.
It turns out that Jin-suk followed the wrong car all the way to a different house. When he discovers that the driver isn’t Do-woo, he screams at the top of lungs in frustration. “Seo Do-woo, why are you on Jeju Island? Why?!” he shouts.
Do-woo sees Su-ah running towards him, and he’s surprised to see her here. Once she’s in front of him, she asks if he’s okay, and then immediately feels flustered. “No matter what… No matter how hard I try…” she struggles to find the words.
Do-woo finishes for her, saying that no matter how hard they try, they always end up here. That’s how it turns out for them. He leans in to hug her and she melts into his embrace. “I’m back,” he says. “Now it feels like I’m back home.”
COMMENTS
I feel it – I can actually feel that we’re right on the cusp of shit hitting the fan. We’ve had our big declarations and our inevitable confrontations, and now the show’s gearing up for what it’s been building up to all this time. Jin-suk has always felt like the ticking time bomb in this drama, even when he was just floating in the background, and his outbursts in this episode already have me nervous for what we have in store.
But before we dive into that, let’s back up a little bit. First off, woohoo! The friendship is back! I was so happy when Mi-jin apologized in the last episode. Admitting she was wrong to Su-ah and then to herself was exactly what I needed from her character. It was what I was waiting to hear from her ever since we learned of her past with Jin-suk, and I think everyone was able to let go of a little anger after that. And I was happy that once they settled that, Mi-jin was able to be Su-ah’s friend again. I think their reconciliation showed just how much the two care for each other – like true friends, even after their brutal fight, they still found some way to fall back into normalcy. After all, there’s nothing like a little karaoke to bring two broken people back together.
Su-ah is gradually getting more people on her side, and I think it’s great that the people rooting for her are actually rooting for her to find independence and happiness rather than rooting for her to get with Do-woo. I loved that Mi-jin waited to tell Su-ah about Do-woo and Hye-won until she heard that Su-ah wanted a divorce strictly for herself. And I love that she reassured Su-ah that Do-woo and Hye-won’s relationship was bound to fall apart even without Su-ah in the picture. Though Su-ah and Do-woo happened to fall in love while still married to other people, I think this series of events were meant to open their eyes and make them realize that their marriages weren’t healthy. Yes, Su-ah did find new love, but the important thing is that she dug herself out of a toxic relationship, and now she can start thinking about herself, just as Mi-jin said.
But for the love of God, Mi-jin, you need to change your freaking passcode. Seriously, why haven’t you changed it yet? I already knew Jin-suk was lounging around Mi-jin’s apartment, and it still made me jump when Mi-jin came home in the dark to hear Jin-suk’s voice come out of nowhere. Or maybe that’s just the effect Shin Sung-rok’s deep voice has on me – honestly, I’m still somewhat traumatized from his chilling performance in You From Another Star.
Jin-suk’s reaction to the affair was perplexing, to say the least. I expected him to be angry, but I didn’t expect him to look so hurt. I don’t know if it’s because of the show’s writing, but I just can’t figure this guy out. He’s been trying so hard to convince everyone that he doesn’t love Su-ah, but then why is he so torn up over the idea of her cheating on him? To me, it doesn’t seem like it’s simply because he wants “control” over her. I keep thinking back to when he called Su-ah weak and fragile and it makes me wonder if in some weird, twisted way, he does care about her. Does he feel the need to protect her? Is that why he’s so desperate to stay married to her? Or does he have something else on his agenda?
After learning about Hye-won’s deceitful past, I’m ready to switch over to Jin-suk and learn more about why exactly – after all the girls he fooled around with – he decided to settle down with Su-ah. I really hope his excuse for being a total jerk is a good one, because I’m not willing to pity him that easily. The show did a good job of gradually revealing Hye-won’s true colors and of making me feel sorry for her (it took a while, but the show convinced me). I even cried with her as she held onto the handkerchief Do-woo had retrieved from Annie’s treasure chest. However, the show hasn’t spent much time justifying Jin-suk’s actions, and I’m getting a little worried as we get closer to the end. I’m not asking the show to write up a quick redemption for him – I just want to know what the hell is going on in his head.

Thank you so much for the recap.
I have been thinking about this lately as I have watched this show. We are at episode 14, and it amazes me how strongly attached SA and DW are to each other...when they actually still do not know much about each other's lives. Last episode SA showed DW the phone messages she had sent to herself in his name and he got to learn a bit about what she was going through in the other parts of her life. And then the eavesdropping at the airport when SA was talking to MJ. And it seems SA also finds out about DW's life peripherally, through others or by watching him interact with his family. That is mind-blowing to me, that they are still connected so deeply to each other (and I as an audience am so deeply invested in their relationship) without them actually communicating verbally to each other about their lives but instead communicating via emotions. I am remembering that scene when they were at the Han River and DW was spreading Annie's ashes and he turned around to look at SA. The look in both their eyes and that instant slow connection without words. And all the other silent communications. Just...how deep, that they have fallen in love with each other mostly by their silent emotional communications and their metaphorical verbal conversations. They seek refuge in each other without having to divulge all their personal struggles or seek advice from the other about how to handle their issues, which is a bit unusual for a couple. The show has done this so subtly though that when I realized this during the last episode, I was really blown away.
I watched Gong Yoo's movie "A Man and a Woman" lately, which also has themes of adultery. OTWTTA has done something to me with how it has slowly and deeply brought the leads together because when I was watching AMAAW, I felt nothing between Gong Yoo and Jeon Do Yeon. And I kept comparing their (what I viewed to be) "rushed" bond to the emotional, melancholic vibe that exists between SA and DW and just could not connect. Whenever they were together in a scene, I was not convinced they loved each other as much as each said they did. And in OTWTTA, neither has even said the word "love" to the other, and yet I already feel it. Basically this show has spoiled me, is really the takeaway.

But AMAAW was only a two hour movie, and they were extremely lonely. That's why they needed each other. This is a slow developing 16 hour drama.

Hyewon isn't redeemed in my book--she's still a crazy, scary b****--but at least she isn't a total monster now. I still disagree with EVERYTHING she did, but at least there's some reason (albeit mostly madwoman's reason) to her actions.
This focus on Jinseok seems to come in a little too late though. How is this shadowy puzzle of a man going to be adequately explained and his inevitable explosion be handled with enough time for a satisfying resolution in two episodes? Unless the show cops out and he just bows out gracefully when everything we've ever been shown on him points to a man that needs to get his way all the time?

Jin-suk married and settled down with So-Ah because she got pregnant. I think I remember that from somewhere in the first couple of episodes.

You think so? I was wondering if Su-Ah helped him to recover from his phobia and so that's why he kind of cares and he is so adamant to keep her with him even if he doesn't love her the way you may expect it...

i fell like its a combination of both the pregnancy and the phobia, because both Mijin and his mother reminded him of the effect Su ah had on him, and how she is the reason he is a great pilot. ex. Mijin not wanting to tell him anything because he was about to go fly a plane.
in a weird way i think he feels comfort in knowing he is with someone that (until this affair) would stay with him and clean cook and take care of him like a mother, and he has a daughter that will give him unconditional love, because he is the father figure.
also in episode 13 his mother tells him his father was not the best of parents and that Su ah is a great person and will stick with him if he treats her a bit better, his mom is sensing it too.

That makes sense, indeed. But I still don't get why he is acting like a deaf and stubborn man in front of his family's sufferings. He didn't react like I was expecting to when Hyo-eun didn't speak his name when she was sick. If he needs them, why is he acting like he doesn't care? He is such a mystery...

I feel like this epidemic is one you definitely have to watch and not rely on recps*no offense! It's just his performance as Jinsuk is so subtle but yet explosive. When he was at miJins house and she started to tell him it doesn't matter anyway because you don't love her, he grips his fist together so tight they turn red. That's when he stops her. He didn't want her to confirm it. That's why he said it's not true until see it. Also the way he looked at her while she worked. It was a mix of shock and sadness. He even says she's willing to do this hard labour to stay away from me. It really hit him that she would rather do this then be with him. And when he says she's not physically strong she's actually very delicate it wasn't said as an insult. He for some reason is desperate to keep his family together. Which is shown when he's at the airport. He's literally shaking as he says the first thing is to bring them to Seoul. He's trying to convince himself if he just brings her back he can stop it. Ahhh I really don't understand him.

Total agree with your comment. It's the realization that SA can stand on her own without him.

Agree. It has been repeated many times in the previous episodes how Jin-seok seems to find meaning and stability in having women throw themselves at him. Su-ah was different in that she was in-love with JS but wasn't aggressive, proof in her remaining quiet despite seeing a photo of Jin-seok with another woman. MJ is aggressive, and despite her love for JS, she probably was a nagger during her relationship with him. Hence, JS settled for SA. All throughout their married life, JS probably never imagined that SA would grow a backbone and slowly be able to stand on her own. And perhaps what's more agonizing for JS (if he could ever feel that) is that SA did all her stuff without nagging or fighting JS over it. Isn't silence a more potent weapon sometimes, rather than harsh words and screaming?

So agree with your last sentence. Be aware of the man who does not talk, and a dog that does not bark.
SA has been holding up too long. Now, the bomb begins to explode.

I'm totally agree with you.
I think Jinsuk do love and care for Su Ah in his own way. But he's too 'self centred', egoism- make him do not want to show his true feeling.
12 years marriage make him feel too comfortable. With Su Ah always 'obey' his every single word.. he will never expect her to have any flaws.

When HyeWon met SuAh, it's so chilling that I even wondered if watch a melodrama or horror movies, and when Jin Suk found out about SuAh and DooWoo, felt like I was watching thriller ㅡmoreover, im still can't get over his character in You Who Came From The Star and Liar Gameㅡ. Of course it felt scary, HW and JS were two of a kind, the way they went berserk, openly screaming their lungs out kept me wondering if they are psychologically stable and of sound mind? More so with JS, we may end up watching Fatal Attraction in reverse, i.e., the husband haunting the adulterous pair. Are we ready for the rough bumpy ride of a psychological thriller yet? Will there be threats, blackmailing, violent scuffle and boiling rabbit on stove? I wonder.

Perhaps JS and HW would pair up to stalk their respective spouses and gather evidence. And while staring unblinkingly from inside a heavily tinted sedan, they suddenly become aware of their close proximity, in an icy, stony kinda way. Before we know it, they start making out, their faces remaining stoic with nary a hair strand out of place (akin to Random Hearts). That's episodes 17-20 right there, thankfully shelved by the PD and writers.
Okay, gotta slap myself awake now. Bye. Lol.

I haven't watched eps 13 and 14 yet but I feel I don't understand SA very well, I think maybe it is cultural. The husband tells her he doesn't like living with her, she does know he's had a relationship with her bf and never told her about it, he also spent a night in a hotel with her bf recently. She knows she doesn't love him anymore. Instead of getting a divorce she moves to Jeju Island. I know it's something from the earlier episodes but can someone explain her?

Mijin did say that's how Soo Ah is like. She's not the confrontational type. She'd rather avoid the problem she's facing. That's why Soo Ah told Mijin that she stopped looking at her husband's phone when she saw his picture with another stewardess instead of confronting him

I felt there was more to it, I guess I don't know why she would be afraid of talking to him about it. It's like the show hasn't really shown me her as afraid of confront, it was just told. More like she was afraid of any change. I wish they had explained that better about her.

hey Lixie!
I think it's because they have Hyoeun that will ultimately always bind them together (even if JS appears not to care XD) and I feel like SA puts her kid first in every situation. she chose to move to Jejudo primarily for her girl to be in a much happier environment, as well as to be free from JS's management lmao by lying to him, rather than opting for the ultimate divorce path. also culturally in Korea divorce is largely frowned upon. Her character also plays a large part. Before episodes 13 and 14 she probably never considered the possibility of divorce, simply because she was used to and resigned to JS's tendencies, it's her character. she accepts rather than questions, as shown from her interactions with JS in the beginning. this already reveals their relationship dynamics, where JS is the "dictator" and she just listens to him.

Yes, it could be the daughter, the social prejudice I don't really get, so that's why I thought of the cultural difference. I think I felt she was too independent on a rational level and that doesn't match with a character that feels so passive and resigned which is I question her behavior. Thanks!

Kevin is too much of a nice guy, I think. And you shouldn't belittle the power of the word "sunbae" haha. Kevin seems to share with Su-Ah the same personality. He looked so shy in front of Min-Ji!
That said, who is the nice guy that Min-Ji likes?
I find Kevin nice but somehow I'd like Min-Ji to end up with the little bro. They are too funny while bickering.

FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS FTW! I cant even articulate how much I treasure Mi Jin and Su Ah's friendship. I'm so happy that Su Ah has someone like Mi Jin to rely on for strength, honestly their relationship is one of my favorites. Also, Mi Jin is the coolest aunt ever.
I find myself well enough content with what Airport has done with Hye Won. She's by no means redeemed herself, but she's no longer the inhuman machine she was at the beginning. That she's showed remorse, and grieved, and is ready to move on feels like a huge step in character development, and not one usually seen in kdramas. So, I'm happy about that.
Jin Suk is another kettle of fish entirely, but I trust that the show will at least give us an insight into his mind before the finale.
I love how the characters in Airport don't need to be good people (Doh Woo and Su Ah kinda fill that required Goodness Quota). They're so very flawed and real. Even the one's you can't quite empathize with still feel like people you could come across in the real world, and I love it.

Jin Suk is a cypher for sure. He is a man on the edge, but also one who seems to exert extreme control over himself at all times. Which is what makes him scary. He seems to skirt the edge with these women...it doesn't SEEM like he is sleeping with them (it's not been really clear), but he likes to play with them in these all-night 'talks' of his. It's twisted and kinda sick, but at the same time I wonder what happened to him that he feels like he needs to play these games. I remember the time he took his daughter out to play soccer and I initially thought...how nice, bonding time. And he seemed to start out giving her some good advice and then suddenly it turned into something cold and slightly ugly. I remember feeling very uncomfortable after that scene was over. Like he had played with and manipulated her feelings and then seemed pleased at having done so.
The dynamic with his wife is still a bit of an unknown also. If this guy is a manipulator, a person who likes to 'play' with his women like they are toys or mice, what kind of damage has he inflicted on Soo-ah over the years that has turned her into this self-effacing, unassertive woman? She is fearful and avoids too much. Slowly she seems to be coming out of this. Do Woo's comment to her some time ago, telling her to remember this moment and use it for her strength and support (I think that was it??) may have been because he detected that she is a woman who is too timid and who internalizes too much for a reason. He is a born rescuer and instinctively is drawn to damaged women it seems. He sensed it with his wife, his daughter, and now with Soo-Ah.
I wonder, now that things are coming to a head, if the reaction we are seeing from Jin Suk is just fear of losing control over the tightly regulated life he has. I think he felt he had SO much control over it, he could put a couple of his toys away for later and go play with some new ones for a while and his old toys would be there waiting for him. He didn't plan on someone else coming along to steal his toys!!! Is a man like him capable of love? Or is possession of all the toys he has been accumulating his only object in life?

This is exactly what I'm thinking! I was talking with my mom (who's watching this with me) and saying that Jin Seok seems to treat Soo Ah and Hyo Eun as his possessions, and that Jeju was supposed be like his secret safe. But he got angry after he found out that SDW was there because it's like somebody is cracking into that safe.
My mom brought up another interesting point that he yells "Why is SDW here?" around the end, rather than focusing on his own wife.
PJS has always the been the most intriguing character to me. He's a really complex personality that I'd love to break apart and examine sometime. I need more info on him ASAP haha.

JS has been taking SA for granted for too long, the reason why he married her in the first place is because she is a “low maintenance” clumsy and slow-witted wife who could be easily manipulated and treated like a piece of furniture. He needs SA to be functional, like an arm chair, but not requiring him to acknowledge her presence.
Remember in an earlier episode, when MJ raised the possibility of SA having an affair, he scoffed in contempt and said something like, “Choi Soo-Ah? Impossible” and added, “If she dares, I would humiliate and destroy her publicly.” Never in his wildest imagination would he envisage SA straying, but when the name Suh Doh-Woo repeatedly cropped up around him, his premonition ominously warned him that something was amiss. He went into denial and wanted to dismiss it so badly as he just couldn’t believe something as absurd as Choi Su-Ah having an affair could happen. It is at this point that his subconscious kicked in, he instinctively knew that the possibly of him losing SA is quite real, so he started to view her in a different light. This probably explains why he looked at SA with mixed feelings at the orchard and commented about her being weak and fragile.
This is like, you don’t normally care much about the arm chair in your living room which is comfy for snuggling in, but you hardly use it as you are seldom at home. One day, when someone asks you for it, you’ll start to feel some sentimental attachment to it. But do you love it? Obviously not, it is just a possession.
Of course, depending on how possessive the person is, some will gracefully give it away hoping to have it put to good use by someone who cherishes it, while others will act petty and insist on hoarding it even though he hardly uses that arm chair. He rather have it gather dust than generously give it away to others who would make better use of it. In a way, JS is hoarding SA as shown in how he insisted that SA and HE leave Jeju immediately, and then have them scurried away on a plane to Auckland. But if SA puts up a resistance, then he will not hesitate to have her "humiliated and destroyed" rather than to let her go to DW.

Yes, that 's pretty much what I got from him too. Let me just say he is not the easiest character to play and I think SSR did a great job portraying all the different nuances of him. Showing this level of coldness and sometimes even contempt without becoming a cardboard villain is not easy.
I don't think he is hard to understand because the show hasn't explained him, which I love, but has given us more than enough clues to figure him out. His mom talked a few times about some kind of fobia he has overcome thanks to his wife and his reactions to the girls he seduces also make clear he needs this control. He needs people that give him reassurance, feed his vanity and that in turn works for him as a source of emotional stability.

SA - We are in the final week so I need SA to stop abusing herself by staying in a bad marriage. She needs to get rid of JS - the narcissitic asap. Is it just me or does the actor playing Je Ah look like Yoo Ah In (I miss SFD)?
HW - I mean her marriage broke up because of her but she took out all her anger on SA. SA simply took it and even wanted to beg for forgiveness because of guilt. At least, she gave DW the divorce...
MJ - Yippie, so happy their friendship was restored. I told you guys that she didn't sleep with him. She has finally realized he was just using her like he uses everyone else. Time for a wake up call and Kevin is the perfect guy for that. I really hope she opens up to Kevin even after she told him to meet a good woman.
DW - Waiting, waiting...for SA to get of her marriage (we all are.) Okay, I maybe greedy but can we have more kisses? I mean what type of affair is this? (Only in dramaland can you get pissed off about an affair being too chaste esp when you have an OTP with incredible chemistry, lmao).

Jin Suk certainly is a big question mark and with SailorJumun confirming this will end with 16episodes I wonder how they will cram it all within the next 2episodes.
Jin suk may actually really do not want go lose Su Ah having his ego at work will lead to some confrontation.I stil recall seeing a preview of 2weeks ago which I saw Jinsuk flipping the dining table Do Woo made for Su ah outside her hse. Maybe it will air this week or ended up on the cutting floor.
But he also looked hurt if it was true Su Ah cheated on him. But he also earlier said he will publicly humiliate her if such thing happens.

Ah, this show...well written and executed. How I wish more dramas could be this way.
This week's episodes concentrated on realisation and growth. The fallout is taking place and as expected, everyone is hurting including the collateral damage to friends and family. Hyo Eun is still unaware and hopefully they will take care of her as well as they have so far.
Hye Won coming to terms with her loss and realising that work is not all there is to life was a great revelation for this character and to arrive at it without turning into a psycho is true to her cool, controlled personality. Some argued that the slap she gave SA was uncalled for but I think any woman in her situation might have reacted the same in a moment of anger. Those who thought she did it blindly should note that she confirmed that SA was Hyo Eun's mom beforehand. Oftentimes, you always assume your partner was seduced by the third party but sometimes it is your partner who deviated. Deep down she knows that it is too little-too late between her and DW, and SA has nothing to do with it. Like MJ said, they would have separated regardless.
DW's realisation that he still feels numb from his divorce drives home the fact that his marriage was not entirely meaningless but has become too untenable to stay on. It was clearly the best option to separate and the closure it brought felt like a huge sigh of relief for both of them. It also seems like HW gained some solicitude and will move to a new beginning free of deceit.
As I said before, why can't we just trust MJ? She really came through for SA and I love that her main concern is for SA to think for only herself and not DW or JS. What a great friend! Now, if only MJ can get her own happily ever after...that Kevin is mighty sweet, no? She did hint at liking someone nice, so there's hope yet for Kevin.
JS is still an enigma and SSR really does play these roles well and perhaps is the reason he was cast. A control freak that's losing control. Let's see if SA is able to do what she needs to do when it comes to JS.
The writer's consistency in character development is commendable. So far, other than JS's slightly under-developed character, there has been no sudden personality transplants and the characters have grown in a natural, realistic manner. Once again, I hope the conclusion will be as satisfying as the whole show has been so far.
I can't resist but add in:- The adultery theme here is in contrast to the more in-your-face treatment over in My Wife's having an Affair This Week but it is equally (morbidly) fascinating to watch the characters in pain and confusion. Check it out if you're not tired of this theme by now.

It's interesting to watch the two side by side (kind of) because here you see the perspective of the two unfaithful partners falling for each other and somewhat understanding how and why. Over at MWIHAATW (so tiring just to type the abbreviated version!), you're cast to the other side and see only from the perspective of the person being betrayed. It just goes to show that humans, relationships, marriages are all so complex and multi-faceted that it's really hard to judge from an outsider's POV. It's really made me question where I stand on the whole issue - I think a big part of me screams that if you're at the stage in your relationship where you have a desire to cheat and are on the path to act on it, you should probably talk to your partner and potentially end things. However, it's complicated when children are in the mix... Not to mention, there's the whole "working on your marriage" and fulfilling your commitment rather than looking for the easy way out.
Anyways, I appreciate both these dramas and their explorations of the issues (though admittedly, I am waiting for both to finish before I watch it because personally they're not the type of dramas I feel the need to watch live to keep the suspense alive).

Agreed, the different point of view is interesting but unfortunately just as painful. There is no black and white when it comes to human emotions and their relationships. Most definitely end things properly before moving on. Children are the biggest casualty every time but I think just as many choose to stay as much as those who choose to separate for the sake of the children.
I think with the abolishing of adultery as a crime in S.Korea, there may be more such themes cropping up in the future. There is no delicate way to portray this topic but I'm glad to see that at least they are trying something different.

Jin-suk's, in his own dysfunctional way, is starting to feel hurt because he can't fathom that he wouldn't figure in anyone's world. It's almost like he assumes it would be automatic because you've met him. ...... Recall several episodes ago when daughter Hyo-eun was falling asleep and she was naming family members. She didn't name him and he wistfully asked something along the line of, "Aren't I on the list?" ....... When it comes to Su-ah, it's the same thing. I think it never occurred to him that she could contemplate leaving him, let alone actually do it.
Looking forward to what happens in the remaining episodes. So unfortunate that only 2 are left.

In Ep. 7 after the scenes of Su Ah doing emergency drills, there is a scene with JS and his mom in the hospital.
JS--Why are you bringing up such an old story?
Mom--It's a good thing you overcame that ordeal. You caused such an uproar, saying you couldn't fly, right after you got hired. It doesn't happen to you mid-flight any more, does it?
JS--Aigoo. I had a hard time briefly in my 20's. Not anymore. Please stop.
Mom--You know that's thanks to the good wife you have. When you meet the right spouse, dealing with the complex only you know...
JS--Complex? What complex?
Mom--If you don't meet the right person you get conditions you didn't even have before.
JS--You live a few days with her and now you are her champion.
Mom--She has a very easy going personality.
JS has some problem that at one point greatly affected his flying career. Settling down with Su Ah stabilized him. Unfortunately, JS is unable and unwilling to show any gratitude or love. He takes it all for granted and revels in his little domestic arrangement with one sided benefits. Well its coming to an end and I suspect it may derail his confidence and ability to function as a pilot.

Yes, this show just kind of lingers in your mind. I've seen the first 1-2 eps and I didn't want to follow it live, but randomly read this recap and there's a part of me that just wants to see how everything unfolds for this couple. It's such a morally challenging show in a way that you know that infidelity is wrong but sometimes you can't ignore how right some people are together. Here, I feel like DW and SA's connection and bond is so subtle and understated, it's deep in the way that they are so emotionally in tune with each other. Another thing I really liked about the exploration of infidelity here is that it's very toned down and with a slice-of-life feel; as opposed to a flashier/glamourised version of a passionate affair.

Sigh...2 more eps to go and I'm gonna miss all these characters.
I've always wondered how HW could rein in her emotions so strongly in the face of her daughter's death and as the show goes on, it reveals that beneath her steely facade, is a fragile woman. She has escaped all her life. Her only anchor is her pride in her profession. It gave her the identity yet at the same time, a false facade of confidence as a person.
SW gave her a shelter that she was subconsciously seeking, Annie, she has loved I believe. Her crazed unfathomable actions at her death, is a deep set guilt. A series of chains she cuffed on herself.
Her breakdown at the last ep, is so deliberating. Finally!
JS is very similar to HW, at the core of his confident jerk attitude, is an insecure child. Defensive, careless, arrogant...all just facade. Does he love Su Ah? I don't think he knows he loves her. In his twisted way, his affection is not tender. He's also escaping. He's flawed. And he knows it. His out burst is desperate. He is losing his only anchor he thought would always be there - S.A...
Last 2 eps...ah! Such a torture to wait!

2 episodes left! Not ready!
To me, the best scenes were Mijin and SuAh reconciling. Mijin's words, reminding Su Ah to not lose control and to think of herself only, resonate a deep feeling within me, letting out my demons and emotional blackhole. True friends who stick by you and say wisest things are much needed, especially by lonely married souls and even more so contemplating and going through divorce. I truly wish Su Ah happiness. She may be called naive and less of a firecracker like Mijin, but she is strong. Strong enough to get out of a toxic marriage, to seek what is important to her and her daughter. Strong enough to realise that she made the choice to marry a heartless man. Strong enough to realise that her marriage did mean something many years before and one of the meaningful things that resulted from the marriage was her daughter. She will face all the backlash. She will be called an adulterer. But even without Do Woo, she is getting out of a narrow, claustrophobic tunnel.

One of the clearest scenes I remember of something that happened on the way to the airport was when Su-ah was rushing to get there, but stopped when she saw a woman by the window who was hanging her laundry to dry. It was a turning point for Su-ah, and on the way to the airport she decided to choose her daughter over her profession.
Also, on the way to the airport, JS and MJ had their car confrontation where JS forced MJ out of the car. MJ then chose to call in sick, flew to Jeju island, and mde up with SA.

I agree with you @Klurker, and I also want to add my 2 cents.
Have you ever thought of going back when you're on the taxi/bus to the airport? Thinking of what's holding your heart at home? The way to airport might be very long, or lonely if you're flying away from home like Su Ah (or MiJin or her Sunbae)... There are chances that you might get off midway and return... like Su Ah did. It makes me think that "the way to airport" is a symbol of Su Ah's journey in this drama.
At first, I also hope that it's her journey to Do Woo's arms. Recently Mi Jin makes me realize that more than everything, I route for her own happiness and confidence, and her freedom from a loveless marriage with Jin Seok. With or without Do Woo is ok, as long as Su Ah finds her contentment.
Airport used to be the only place where Su Ah shines confidently at her best state, and it in return gives her great personal experiences, her best memories that keep her going. I personally think that's why she names Do Woo as "airport".
So to me, the title is the process of Su Ah rediscovers herself, her own feelings (that she has been suppressed for so long), her pathway of future and who is her companion... Be it by being with Do Woo is a plus!
* P/s: sorry for my broken English, trying to put my thoughts of this drama into words is much harder than an English essay!

@Bogoshipda, your 2 cents gave a lot of sense. After so many years watching Kdrama I still struggle to understand Korean parables. Guess I have to watch more.. *sigh*
