Legend of the Blue Sea: Episode 5
by girlfriday
Okay, now this I want more of. Our hero turns into a hilarious bundle of contradictions today, as the romance progresses to the denial phase and he starts doing the very things he once called idiotic. Luckily for us, he doesn’t seem to have the self-awareness to know why he’s doing any of this, which means that hopefully his antics will just go on and on and on.
EPISODE 5 RECAP
Joseon. Mermaid Se-hwa has come to land, and in no time Lord Yang sends henchmen to attack and capture her. She’s about to be fileted when mayor Dam-ryung swoops in like an action hero, wielding his sword and backlit by a halo of sunlight.
The henchmen try to get through him to Se-hwa, but he blocks them with swift, high-flying moves. The men go down one by one, and Dam-ryung takes Se-hwa by the hand to run to safety.
More henchmen arrive to give chase, but Dam-ryung hides them in the field, still holding Se-hwa’s hand tightly in his. Once the coast is clear, he asks if she isn’t hurt, and then adds, “I missed you.” *flutter*
Snowflakes shower down on them as they walk through the field, and Se-hwa stops to gaze at a little flower. He picks it for her and says that all flowers mean something, and this one stands for “something you have, and something I don’t—memories.”
They travel a distance on horseback, and then finally arrive at Dam-ryung’s home by nightfall, where a man watches them arrive. Out in the ocean, three mermaids swim to the surface, and Se-hwa seems to sense them and stops in her tracks. Does she hear them singing, or calling to her, all the way out here?
Lord Yang gets the report that Dam-ryung brought the mermaid to the mayor’s residence, and his gisaeng companion Hong-ran (Joon-jae’s stepmother’s doppelganger in Joseon) is pleased to hear that she walked right into their hands.
They’re interrupted when a shipping merchant comes to complain that Lord Yang is holding the crew at his inn against their will so that they can’t work. Lord Yang says he still hasn’t received their promise to deal exclusively with him, and the merchant flips the table in front of Lord Yang, and spits that he already blocks their shipping routes and steals their livelihood, but they won’t work that hard just to fill his belly. He vows to make Lord Yang’s crimes known publicly.
But the very next morning, fishermen arrive at the shore and find the merchant’s dead body on the beach. At the crime scene, officials tell mayor Dam-ryung that there are no clear indicators of how the man died, and rumors abound that the mermaid coming to land is the cause of this curse.
Dam-ryung notes Lord Yang smiling at him from the crowd, and declares that no funeral will be held until they investigate and find out whether this man was really cursed or murdered.
At the same time, gisaeng Hong-ran storms into the mayor’s compound with a shaman in tow, who supposedly saw that the mermaid was here. She demands to search the place, and the threat of Lord Yang’s power is enough to get her past the guards. One of the minion officers runs to alert Dam-ryung (ha, is that Chun Song-yi’s manager?), and Dam-ryung hurries back.
Meanwhile, Se-hwa sits in a room staring at a vase—it’s the one with a painting of a mermaid kissing a man who’s wearing modern-day clothes, which we’ve seen Shi-ah uncover in the future. Dam-ryung had explained to Se-hwa that he has dreams, and in those dreams he’s living in a strange world, and she’s there too. The drawing on the vase is something he saw in one of his dreams.
Dam-ryung doesn’t know if they’re visions, or just dreams, or premonitions of another world, but he does know one thing: “The things that are happening now will undoubtedly happen then… strangely, like fate is repeating itself.”
As he says the words in voiceover, someone busts into the room where Se-hwa is hiding…
And in the future, hit man Dae-young walks up to a door on a rainy night dressed as a cop, and mermaid Chung opens the door to let him in.
In Joseon, Dam-ryung races down the shore on horseback to return to Se-hwa, and in the present, Joon-jae zooms forward in his car to speed past the police checkpoint and get to Chung.
Seoul, present day. Dae-young is seconds away from gaining entry into the house when Joon-jae screeches to a halt outside, sending traffic cones flying everywhere. He rushes to Chung’s side and immediately notes how suspicious Dae-young looks, with no walkie-talkie and no partner.
Joon-jae asks if he’s really a cop, and Dae-young breaks into a creepy smile before running off, just as the real police arrive (one of them is the doppelganger of the mayor’s minion in Joseon).
Joon-jae tells them to go after the suspicious cop, but they’re more concerned with him blazing past their checkpoint and demand to know why he did it. Joon-jae says that he heard about the murder in the neighborhood and ran home to his girlfriend, who was home all alone.
He holds up their clasped hands and says that he was worried because she’s so easily frightened, which Chung immediately contradicts, heh. He laughs and repeats through gritted teeth that she’s afraid, and she chirps, “I am? I am.”
Joon-jae smoothly hands over a fake ID and waits as they call in to check that he isn’t a criminal, but then he notices Detective Hong, the man who’s been after him for years, coming towards them. Detective Hong catches a glimpse of the back of his head and gets this niggling feeling that he’s seen that man before. He starts to come down the steps…
But just before he comes face to face with Joon-jae, another cop comes by saying that there’s been a sighting of the killer, and the detectives rush off. The tipoff came from Joon-jae’s partner Nam-doo, who’s hiding out across the street and cursing himself for breaking all of his rules for Joon-jae.
The check on Joon-jae’s fake ID comes back clean, of course, though the officer gives him a hairy eyeball and settles for giving him a traffic ticket. Joon-jae makes another show of cooing over Chung and her rattled nerves, and she smiles shyly, loving the attention. The officer wonders why Joon-jae looks so familiar, and why he just doesn’t like the look of the guy. A past life of minionhood will do that to you.
Inside, Chung looks happily down at Joon-jae’s hand still holding hers, but sees blood on his hand and asks if it hurts. He looks startled at her concern but then he remembers to yell at her for opening the door to just anyone. She doesn’t see what the big deal is, saying that he was just a person, not even a shark.
Joon-jae doesn’t see why a shark would ring the doorbell, but he goes with it and argues that people are way scarier than sharks—fewer than five sharks kill humans in a year, while humans kill tens of thousands of sharks.
Chung just interrupts to ask if his hand doesn’t hurt, and again he deflects, arguing that she should worry about herself first before anyone else, frustrated that she put herself in danger. He wonders out loud what he’s doing, and deflates on the couch.
Chung shuffles over and says she’s really curious about something, and asks where all the little people living inside the television went, pointing to the screen and looking behind it. She asks if he can’t get the little people to come back out, because earlier one of them ended their conversation on “Your father is really…!” and then told her to meet back here “next time” to find out the answer.
Joon-jae gets a kick out of messing with her, and says that he knows the little people inside the TV very well because they live in his house. He offers to call them up and ask who the father is. So he calls Nam-doo, and Chung runs over and curls around his shoulders like a cat to listen in on the call.
Nam-doo is naturally confused when Joon-jae calls him and addresses him as if he’s talking to the little people in the TV. Joon-jae chides “them” for not finishing the conversation, and asks who the father is. Nam-doo complains that the question hits a nerve, because he’s an orphan, and Joon-jae acts like he’s just heard the juiciest bit of gossip and hangs up.
Chung is practically drooling for the answer, but Joon-jae tells her that in this world everything is give and take, pointing at her for “give” and himself for “take,” and he refuses to tell her about the birth secret until she fesses up about how they met in Spain and why he can’t remember her. But to his frustration, Chung just says she’ll wait here until “next time” to hear the answer for herself then. She says she’s good at waiting.
Joon-jae grumps and gets up close to say something threatening, except that the proximity just makes Chung bashful. He says that she might be good at waiting, but he isn’t, and gives her until tomorrow to tell him the truth or get out of this house.
Meanwhile, Joon-jae’s stepmom calls hit man Dae-young and yells at him to stick to his orders. He insists that the last killing wasn’t his doing, but she doesn’t believe him, and just asks if he’s found Joon-jae yet.
Joon-jae’s stepbrother Chi-hyun overhears his mother’s conversation and purposely interrupts to ask for a sandwich, and then intercepts a text message from Dae-young giving her Joon-jae’s address.
Chi-hyun memorizes the message and brings the phone to his mother, and drops it into a bowl of water while handing it to her. She tries to contain her frustration, while he plays dumb and offers to buy her a new phone.
Joon-jae is startled awake that night when Chung slooooowly sticks her head out of her loft door and lets her hair hang down like a creepy ghost. She tells him not to mind her: “I just want to look at your face,” she says. She’s overjoyed to learn that they’re home alone for the night, and when he tells her to quit hanging up there like that, she starts to climb down the ladder to be next to him instead of hanging over him.
He threatens to throw her out of the house now instead of tomorrow, so she quickly climbs back up. She tries to keep one eyeball peeking out at him, ha, but he orders her to shut the door. Chung lies awake in bed that night, unable to sleep. She looks over at the clock on her nightstand and stops the second hand from ticking away, wishing that tomorrow wouldn’t come.
In the morning, Chung is reluctant to open the door for Shi-ah, and says that Joon-jae instructed her not to let strangers in. Chung physically holds the gate shut, finally releasing it so that Shi-ah falls to the ground on her way in. Shi-ah fumes, while Chung tells her to stop sitting there and invites her in.
Shi-ah’s blood pressure rises even more when she learns that Chung and Joon-jae were here alone all night, and Shi-ah declares that she and Joon-jae are going to be married. Chung asks what marriage is, and Shi-ah says it’s living together and loving and caring for each other. Chung: “Ah, you mean what Joon-jae and I are doing right now?”
Shi-ah corrects her and says that Chung is mooching off of Joon-jae, sticking onto him like a bedbug and sucking his blood. Chung takes that literally, of course, and cries, “I never sucked his blood!” Shi-ah cuts to the chase and tells her to get out, so Chung starts to growl angrily like an attack dog and chomps down on Shi-ah’s finger.
There’s screaming and flailing and biting, and then we cut to Shi-ah with a bandaged finger and Chung with her head down, as Joon-jae chastises her for biting someone like a dog. Joon-jae tells Chung to get ready to talk or get out, and walks Shi-ah out to the street to catch a cab.
He ignores Shi-ah’s questions about Chung and her chitchat about work, and doesn’t even stop to say goodbye as he catches her a cab and then crosses the street. In her hand is a picture of the vase with a man kissing a mermaid, which Joon-jae never got to see.
Chung watches TV and learns from a drama character that if you confess your love on the first day of snow, your love will come true. She watches the kiss scene gleefully, but her fun is cut short when she hears Joon-jae come home.
She scuttles upstairs to her loft to avoid being thrown out. He scoffs to see that she’s been watching romantic dramas and shuts the TV off, only to have her turn it back on from upstairs repeatedly.
Joon-jae eventually lures her out with the smell of food, and tells her to eat up. But once she’s fed, he hands her a cell phone and a transit card and tells her to get out. He shows her that she can dial “1” on her phone and hear his voice (he’s programmed his number into her phone as “Guy I don’t know that well”), but tells her only to call him when she’s ready to tell him the truth.
Chung asks if now is their “next time,” and he says yes, because he made a promise yesterday. He asks why promises are made, and she remembers from when he taught her the first time and answers, “Promises are made to be kept.”
She agrees to leave if he makes her a promise too, citing his give-and-take rule, and asks for their “next time” to be on the first day of snow. She points up to Namsan Tower and asks to meet there that day, because she has something important to tell him. He wants to hear it now, but she says it has to be that day.
He agrees and steps out of the way for her to go, and she reluctantly heads out. From the terrace, Joon-jae watches her linger outside the gate before walking away, and then he scrambles to his phone to open his tracking app and see where she’s going. Lol, she only just walked out of sight!
He’s determined to watch her every move to find out for himself what her deal is. He expects her to go somewhere revealing, but her first stop is a seafood restaurant, where she pauses to talk to the fish in the tank outside.
She doesn’t have much sympathy for them, saying that she came all this way for one man, and it’s not like she wants something huge. “I just want to live together in a house and love and care for each other,” she says, using Shi-ah’s words to describe marriage.
Back at the house, Nam-doo calls Joon-jae cold-hearted for kicking Chung out in this freezing weather, confused as to why he ran to her like a crazy person one day and then kicked her to the curb the next. Tae-oh just silently holds up articles about how it’s going to be the coldest, snowiest winter and how violent crime is up this holiday season. HA.
Joon-jae smacks Tae-oh on the head for giving him a death-glare, and though he tells the boys that he’s not Chung’s guardian, he goes straight back to his phone to watch where she goes. He sees her heading to Gangnam, and decides to track her down.
Joon-jae walks out in the middle of Nam-doo’s introduction to their new target, which happens to be Shi-ah’s wealthy sister-in-law Jin-joo. Nam-doo says that she’s looking to invest her husband’s slush fund money at the moment, which means that even if she were to get conned out of the entire amount, she couldn’t report it stolen.
As Nam-doo lays this out, we see Jin-joo arrive at the vet with her dog and her housekeeper (Joon-jae’s mom). Twice, the attendants greet the housekeeper as the madam instead of Jin-joo, making her huffy. (I love that Jin-joo swaps dog for purse after it happens the first time, only to have it happen again anyway.)
Jin-joo is so mad about it that she makes snide comments about the housekeeper’s clothes and the way she looks at her, and ends up yelling at her to get out in a fit of anger. Mom trudges to the clothing donation bin to throw out Jin-joo’s clothes as ordered, and huddles there for a while trying not to cry over being fired.
What she doesn’t notice is that Joon-jae’s stepmom drives right past her. Stepmom stops by to thank Jin-joo for the food she sent over the other day, which the chairman particularly liked. Stepmom says that the chairman hasn’t been eating very well lately, but loved the food, and none of them realize that this is because it was made by his first wife. Jin-joo promises to send more any time.
But since it was the housekeeper who cooked all that food, Jin-joo eats her words and puts on a sugary act the minute the housekeeper returns to say dejectedly that she’ll pack her things. Jin-joo insists that when she said “Get out,” she meant for Mom to go outside to throw out the trash, not leave for good.
Gangnam’s homeless fashionista is first on the scene to go through Jin-joo’s clothes, and Chung is right there with her, changing up her look. (I love the show’s excuses for putting the mermaid in new clothes all the time.)
Chung watches all the regular people going home after work and wishes she had a home too, but her friend points out that the bank owns all those houses and they’re technically richer than those people because they have no debt. Chung guesses that this is why Joon-jae is always after money.
Chung asks how you make money, so her friend introduces her to a job handing out flyers in the street. She shows Chung how it’s done and warns her that the manager is watching, and Chung happily begins work, excited to make money and give it all to Joon-jae.
Joon-jae, meanwhile, has been tracking her and is surprised to arrive and see Chung passing out flyers in the street. He sighs and calls her dumb, but then when he hears the manager yell at her for doing a bad job and threaten not to pay her, he gets mad and reports the manager’s illegally parked car to get it towed.
Suddenly Chung hits the jackpot when a group of schoolboys walk up and ask her for some of her flyers. Around the corner, the boys hand the flyers to Joon-jae, who pays them 1,000 won per sheet. That’s so adorable!
After a few hours in the cold, Chung starts to shiver and looks longingly at the people who eat pastries (fish-shaped, natch) as they pass by. All of a sudden, a nice ajumma comes up to her and hands her a bag of pastries and puts a scarf around her neck, and Chung waves at her gratefully.
Around the corner, the ajumma waits for Joon-jae to pay her, and she asks if he’s going to marry that girl, and finds his one-sided love cute. He scoffs and says it’s not like that, not that the ajumma believes him.
Next, a man walks up to Chung and asks for her number, saying that she’s just his type. She starts to take out her cell phone, when Joon-jae calls and tells her never to give out her phone number to anyone. LOL. She asks innocently why, and he says that anyone who asks for her number is a bad man: “You’re good at biting, right? If anyone like that comes on to you, just bite him!”
On cue, Chung goes into attack-dog mode and growls at the man, who scampers away. Chung asks where Joon-jae is, and he answers, “Faaaaaar away from you!”…just as the cart he was crouching behind rolls away, revealing him. Pwahaha, smooooth.
She spots him instantly and bounds over to him, and Joon-jae swears that he was just passing by, and that Seoul is small enough that you can run into anyone coincidentally. Well, you can in this drama. Chung asks if they can run into each other by chance again.
He starts to go and tells her not to call out his name so loudly in the street, so Chung whispers his name into his ear, and adds that she’s working hard to earn money so she can give it all to him. She skips back to work, and he pauses to watch her.
Joon-jae’s stepbrother Chi-hyun seems to have a good relationship with Chairman Dad, who trusts him with work and dotes on him as a son. Chi-hyun asks if Dad doesn’t miss Joon-jae, and offers to look for him.
Dad is grateful for the gesture and says he’s already got people looking for Joon-jae, and Chi-hyun suggests that they keep the search for Joon-jae a secret from his mother. Chairman Dad looks surprised and asks why, and Chi-hyun only answers, “Just because.”
Chung is still handing out flyers as it gets dark, and she stops short when a man in black approaches her and holds out a hand for a flyer. It’s hit man Dae-young, and she seems to recognize him. “You’re wearing a hat again,” she says, and his smile fades. But before he can answer, it starts to rain and Chung runs for cover. Dae-young wonders if she recognized his face.
Meanwhile Chi-hyun is parked outside Joon-jae’s house, contemplating what to do as the rain falls.
Inside, Joon-jae looks out his window at the rain, and sees it turn to snow. The radio announces the first snowfall of the year, and out in the street Chung sticks her hand out as the snow comes down.
Yoo-na, the little girl who bought her a meal the other day, sees Chung standing outside her tutoring academy, and Chung proudly reports that she’s making money now. Chung asks if this is the first snow, and says she has to get to Namsan. Yoo-na somehow reads her thoughts, and asks if she’s going there to meet Joon-jae.
That startles Chung, and she asks, “You heard that? Most people can’t hear my real voice.” The little girl doesn’t know what she’s talking about, but tells her to take a taxi if she has money, or the bus if she doesn’t. Chung thanks her and takes off running.
Joon-jae grumbles at the snow that there are so many things to be annoyed about ever since Chung showed up. He sees on his tracking app that Chung is headed to Namsan as promised, and he whines as he gets dressed, complaining out loud but grinning from ear to ear the whole time. As he drives out, Chi-hyun follows behind him.
Chung gets off the bus just as Joon-jae’s car passes her, and she runs excitedly toward the entrance at the thought of seeing him. Chung stops to look up at the tower, heart filled with excitement, when suddenly a car comes to a screeching halt and she goes down, her flyers fluttering down around her. Ack.
Up ahead, Joon-jae misses the accident entirely and drives in. Chung lies in the road in a heap, and the driver gets out of his car—it’s Chi-hyun, and he looks shaken up.
Joon-jae waits up at Namsan Tower and checks his phone again, wondering where Chung is. He smiles in anticipation and holds out his hand to catch the snow.
Down in the street, Chung’s vision of the tower starts to blur and a tear falls down her face as her eyes close.
Epilogue. Joseon. While initially held captive by Lord Yang, mermaid Se-hwa becomes a target for neighborhood children who throw rocks at her. Se-hwa calls out desperately in her mind, “Help me,” and one little girl—Yoo-na’s doppelganger—stops at the sound of the mermaid’s voice.
The little girl says she heard the mermaid ask for help, but her brother insists that he heard nothing, and drags her away.
Seoul. Little Yoo-na looks out her window at Namsan Tower, far off in the distance. She tells her mom, “Unni asked for help,” and points to the tower, but Mom thinks she’s making things up not to study, and pulls her inside.
COMMENTS
Well, I guess that answers the question about how far mermaid telepathy travels. I wonder what makes that little girl so special. The existence of all these doppelgangers and the fact that history is repeating itself so closely in the two timelines is becoming an increasingly interesting part of this world’s mythology. This is especially true now that we’ve learned that the vase is Dam-ryung’s and he’s seeing visions of things that Joon-jae is experiencing centuries in the future—they seem to be visions of his own reincarnated life to come. And if so, why is the past version having visions of the future one, and not the reverse? It’s the backwards time that’s tripping me up, but I’m starting to wonder if they’ll all be stuck in an endless loop until the mermaid changes her fate somehow.
I like this idea that a person’s true nature remains consistent over various incarnations, because it can be played for comedy like in the case of Mom and Jin-joo or the mayor’s minion officer, or used to drive our curiosity like with our villain duo or the little girl who can magically hear mermaids. What we’re starting to see from all of these repeated appearances is that history repeats itself because the souls are fundamentally the same, and they’re drawn to the same people and will make the same choices over and over again. Now I’m waiting to discover more of our present-day cast in Joseon—people like Shi-ah and Nam-doo—because it will ultimately reveal what kind of person we’re dealing with in the future.
I don’t necessarily want to chalk the whole romance up to fate—agency is important and I like that clearly, Joon-jae can choose to walk away at any time—but I don’t mind the notion that it’s in his nature to always choose to go back for the mermaid. Dam-ryung returned to Se-hwa when he didn’t remember her, and it’s the same way that Joon-jae is returning to Chung now—consistent within one character before and after amnesia, and consistent across both characters. I do wish that Chung’s love for Joon-jae carried the same weight as Se-hwa’s, who received the love she wanted and sacrificed it for Dam-ryung’s happiness, but I expect that to develop slowly over the course of the show, because we have history to back us up.
I find Joon-jae’s growing care for Chung to be really heartwarming at this stage, because he’s in denial about it but unable to actually let her go. It makes for some endearing rom-com antics with him trying to look cool and uncaring while being a daddy long legs in the background, and it cracks me up how many times he’s seen her ON THE DAY that he kicked her out. I don’t think this stage with them apart will last very long, especially with that car accident, but if we can get more of Joon-jae coming up with schemes to help Chung without her knowing and the boys giving him a hard time about her, I wouldn’t mind it one bit.

This is my favourite episode so far.
I love this show keeps on getting better and better with each passing episode.
I also noticed the complaints have reduced since all the people who have been hating on the show have finally dropped it.

I'm selfish like that, but I wished all the viewers who don't enjoy or are out of patience with this drama could just drop it. I would rather be one of the few who watch it and enjoy that experience, than have to have my enjoyment spoiled every recap because of viewers who can't let go of the drama they don't like. I know it's selfish of me not to want to share the drama but I just don't like to have my experienced lessened and spoiled every time by the same kind of comments. Can't I just enjoy this in peace?
Legend is not even my crack drama (waiting for Goblin to take that spot) but that doesn't mean I don't want to savor the experience.

Drama has been getting worse and more boring each episode. Ratings are down too so Korea agrees with me. Final scene of the episode saved it from me dropping it next episode, but that was close.

I think we (international audience) and people of Korea have different tastes.
There have been many instances where I still don't understand why dramas like Heirs or even Moon Embracing Sun were liked so much in Korea (as compared to international audience). Maybe it's their demand or their demography that differs.
Although DOTS had a great storyline and casting, but it becoming a Hallyu is still incomprehensible, when I can understand the same for You From Stars.
Similarly, I don't know how ratings of dramas like Healer, You're Beautiful and many such dramas are down/mediocre in Korea, but loved internationally (which should also include Playful Kiss as well).
However, I can agree with Korea when it comes to dramas like You From Stars, Secret Garden, BOF, Coffee Prince, etc.
So, for us, Korean ratings don't matter much, quality does.

Agree 100%!
Everything you said...
Ditto every single drama you listed...
And I'm gonna make a point about an intense audience that can just turn against a drama for the minutest reason... It's like adjusting their expectations is too excruciating an experience for them...lol.
It had to be this way and it's not...so drama meet shaft...
It's just limiting possibilities
I think I'm astute enough and sufficiently aware to understand why some dramas do better than others and whether some will admit it or not many of the reasons are super frivolous because its just entertainment.

I can't believe how Koreans liked Heirs at all. It was so bad! Park Shin Hye was a disaster. The whole thing was a disaster.

the ratings in korea are iffy because the ones who are actually tuning in live with their TVs are usually the older demographic and ahjummas. thats why morning dramas have such high ratings.
and whenever im in korea ive noticed that the older generation tend to stay away from the more complicated dramas (aka beautiful mind, W) and just watch a simpler one that they can watch absentmindedly.
of course, what ive said is quite overgeneralizing and theres a lot of exceptions (good wife, signal, etc).

Good observation. That really explain why W didn't rate higher coz I thought it was groundbreaking in terms of concept ...

I agree (well, except for You from the Stars). As for the ratings, it's about the same as in the US. It's the tweens or the older folks who sit around and watch tv when it's airing (hence the ratings) but most people in their 20's and early 30's are not sitting at home watching when it airs or watching tv dramas at all. Only a few select shows in the US get that kind of viewership (ex: GOT).
The international fans have the privilege of streaming sites so we can watch them whenever we want and/or all at once. I'm sure the 20's and 30's in Korea also watch online but I'm just speaking to the demographic in terms of ratings.
As for taste, international fans and Koreans clearly have different cultural background which affect their sense of comedy, drama, romance etc. The tastes are just different so that's probably why some dramas that just seem really generic, cliched and seemingly boring to us are big hits in Korea. It's prob not for them. It's the same with movies, some of the best Bollywood movies I've seen just tanked in India. And some of the best films from the US didn't even hit the box office in Korea.
I'm just glad that we have forums like dramabeans and other streaming sites so like-minded drama fans can talk about the dramas and share their likes and dislikes. I'm ok with people expressing annoyance or dislike for a drama. All opinions should be welcomed as long as it's not mean and hateful. I'm sure people who are watching but don't like the drama are saying so bc they are disappointed - they either expected more from the writer or the actors and would have liked to seen the drama take a different road, that's all.

@Affie: Is that so? I didn't knew. Lol! Thanks.

Ever since I discovered that Yong Pal was a Korean ratings hit (and I'll Remember You a dud) I've decided Korea and I are not going to agree on what counts as quality TV. I'd be spooked if Korea and I agreed at this point.
I'm liking this show. Slow start, but this episode showed a lot of the tracks are being laid for a strong second-half narrative, which all too often doesn't happen. I prefer a slow build to a lingering drama death.

@miranda: Popularity =/= quality. Even if a show has high ratings, it doesn't mean it's receiving high praise. DOTs, Yong Pal, and other popular dramas were heavily criticized.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's boring me, but I do feel disappointed that it lacks the same tension that You From Another Star did. Also, I don't completely buy into the present day romance yet.
While I like how Joon-Jae is helping the mermaid, I just don't feel that he and Chung have a strong enough bond to have such a deep pull towards each other. For example, in You From Another Star, the two protagonists were both lonely individuals who helped each other in times of need and had deep, meaningful chemistry from the start. In Legend of the Blue Sea, I'm getting that heart-tugging pull from the Joseon storyline(most likely because of the touching backstory) but not from the present one, and the fact that the story establishes that the past and the present are different only makes it harder for me to buy why Joon-Jae is so warm towards the mermaid. Chung's characterization may also be a factor, because it's like dealing with a child, and romance doesn't seem to fit in at times.
One thing I miss that I thoroughly enjoyed in You From Another Star was the suspicion. Why does no one question the mermaid's home and background and just let practically a stranger into the house? Her supernatural strength(in episodes 1 and 2)? Why did Joon-Jae believe Chung when she said she absorbed information from a laptop overnight(or at least, he didn't show any major skepticism and brushed it aside in episode 2)?. These small things also make it hard to buy into the main plot in general.
And then there's the lack of tension. That ending scene in this episode, for example, made me curious to know what happens in the next episode, but it would be so much more thrilling if the director hadn't spent a bunch of minutes on Joon-Jae and Chung taking transportation to the tower(duh moments) and brought the car crash to a climax. It would have been especially nice if the director had tied in what Joon-Jae had said about protecting yourself first. Right now, the only thing holding this show together is the chemistry between the leads and Jun Ji-Hyun's acting, with the plot having no agency, and many parts seem to be dragged out(conversations going on longer than necessary, etc.).
I am disappointed that this was not the quality that You From Another Star had been, because I think better directing and music selection would have made this show a masterpiece. Some parts just seem to drag out, and I come back to this show without an immense amount of anticipation(I am more inclined to watch Weightlifting Fairy sometimes because it does a good job of making me yell for more). Although this is still much better than your average drama, I wish it would give me that heart-tugging feeling that makes me ache for more.

lol, i do agree that they drowned and lay on the ground after car crashes very peacefully. also, the past and the present are more linked than i thought. that sucks because it begans to seem like an agent of fate. since your nature doesn't change, your actions wont either, which is very much like fate.
i don't like all the coincidences that are happening between the past and the present either. it makes it seem more like fate too. even if they have the same natures, must they all be one time period and must they go through almost the exact same counterparts?
such actions would be criticized in other dramas but not this one. sigh.

I kinda understand why Joon-jae is attracted to Chung. He is this cynical man who always sees the worst in everything... and then he met the innocence Chung who sees the best in him. She lays down her guard, drops her defenses, and trusts him completely and falls in love with him without any hesitation. This woman, slowly but surely, makes Joon-jae less and less cynical.
However, just like you, I don't really understand what makes Chung falls in love with Joon-jae to the point she's willing to leave everything behind for him.

I agree with you Emaneul...
This one is definitely not as intense as YFAS... but I think suspicion is largely missing because Chung just appears to be a headcase...maybe a retarded person... In YFAS...Do MIN J dropped many hints in plain sight of others that he was otherworldly. Chung some times does...but they are not so far out as to make one suspect her of being not human...
My personal whim is that the villain here isn't scary enough . Shin Rok was really scary in YFAS to me.
The bgm here could also be spoken of... but the thing is that it's not any different than that of other hyped dramas...if anything this soundtrack to me...is subtler than those of Heirs and DOTS.
The cliffhanger could have been more suspenseful but I think the director deliberately made it more heart breaking.. . More like instead of yelling ottoke at the end scene...i cooed a calm aigoooo...
Y'know? Heartfelt...

I like this show for a number of reasons:
- I always appreciate any fantasy in shows cuz it takes a little bit more effort in terms of CGI and other creative visuals etc
- Both actors are charming and especially for LMH, I like him in this role more than his other roles (city hunter is close)...
- i dunno what ppl expect from the romance department but for now I am fine with that now...

Problem is, there are people like me who can't drop it though we are somewhat bored coz we're waiting for things to get better, hoping for somethin, anything that'll make us get excited about it and watch the next ep - raw. It's JJH and LMH so you know, I was expecting fireworks but there's not much chemistry, not even a spark except for the Joseon backstory which is much more interesting, really.
Now, is she the same mermaid from the Joseon era? Why is she so far away from Korea when they first met in the modern time, spain, was it? Is it a need to migrate coz the water is cold in Korea thing? But Europe is way over there, just saying. ok, whatever, the view was stunning, I am thankful, so forget reasons and logic. This cannot replicate the success of You who came from the stars.

I guess few drops is negligible. It is not same as getting your legs fully wet. In Spain when it rained, her scale/fish tail din't make an appearance.
On second thoughts, the camera focused a little too much on her legs when she took shelter from rain under a building, before the little girl's visit.

Maybe only salt water turns her legs to a tail?? So, when it rains, she just gets wet, like the rest of us. No, that is not correct, we mortals get rained on and take on the appearance of a drowned cat, a Mermaid get rained on and she just looks naturally beautiful. Geeez, sucks when even Fantasy ain't fair:(

I'm pretty sure water changes her legs into fishtail; that was why one of the men trying to catch her in Joseon time was carrying a bucket of water, to splash over her legs, and today, there's a close-up of her sneakers that cover her feet up and she's making an effort to stand as far in under the awning as possible when it started to rain.

That drama she is watching was likely made for the show since the tv showed it was being broadcast by SBC...a fictional station.
Could it be a real drama though? Seemed very cheesy. Lol. Or maybe too fluffy...wont it have been raked over the coals here on DB? hehe...

I admit the pace is a bit slow and ones may need the patience to pick up the subtle clues thrown here and there along each episodes. The Joseon backstory continue to be endearing and LMH as Joon Jae with his involuntary kindness towards the mermaid is so cute, I find myself smiling watching his action.
The ending of this episode was kinda sad. Giving me the vibe of "Love Affair"where Annette Benning got hit by car otw to meet Warren Beatty. I wonder if this would have any effect on her legs since in Josoen, Lord Yang was told the weakness of the mermaid who come to land is the legs.

At the same time, I'm admittedly a fan of fluff so I can't complain because I could watch their antics all day.
Still, it's only episode 5 and I can already tell this writer's style is to drop subtle hints to bring the story together. Plus I do think it has interesting dynamics it explores sometimes with humor and sometimes with seriousness.
Kdramas are chock full of clichés so that's nothing to be upset about if it's used well.

I think that has been explained pretty well already.. She does not deliberately erase his memories. It happens when she kisses because that is what it is. When a mermaid kisses a human, human loses his memories.
The two kisses they showed, both times she did it to save him underwater. That also is a typical mermaid legend that I have seen in all mermaid fiction - that to save someone underwater, mermaid simply has to kiss. (I am sure Disney made that up!! ha ha)

I think that kissing thing hasn't been explained clearly, or did I miss something? The only rule that has been explained clearly is that mermaids can take human's soul and memories when mermaids "touch" human, however they can control this ability. That grandpa who worked for Dae-young in Jeoson era said that mermaids only erase the memories they want to erase.
Now the question is does erasing memory through a kiss work differently than erasing memory through a touch? I hope they're not different though since it sounds ridiculous to me.

@Kate... It is entirely possible that Chung erased Joon Jaes memory because she doesn't want him to know she's a mermaid YET.
Since they met...i have noticed she seems to want to begin their entire relationship on a fresh slate...
Though find it a bit unfair she wants to keep the entire chunk of their dalliance from Joon Jae...if she tells him everything how will she explain them surviving that jump into the ocean without saying she's a mermaid?
I think she can be allowed to keep that little nugget of life-altering info to herself until she is good and ready to tell JJ.

Yes, her mermaid identity is her greatest vulnerability and it is understandable that she wants to keep it hidden. In the past it becoming known made her a target for suffering (beaten for her pearl tears) and death (oil from her tail). Anyone trying to protect a mermaid is also thrown into danger.

I like this theory! I mean can you just imagine the danger mermaids would be in if the world knew about their existence?
@Kate, there are a few plausible reasons that one can think of as to why Shim Chung would erase Joon Jae's memory. I think it's the not knowing why that keeps people coming back for more. Were these questions all answered by episode 5, the show would lose a huge chunk of it's intrigue.

Agreed. It is a fantasy rom-com and without these little mysteries, I don't think people would watch this drama. Some people are finding this drama boring and to keep narrating it in a single direction would definitely turn off the curiosity.

Thanks for the recap, GF!
I really like the Joseon time period scenes and it's so interesting to see the parallels in present time. The epilogue is always a great add-on for a more complete storytelling. It's really enjoyable to see the layers of the two timelines played out, which keeps us engaged while waiting for what has occurred in the past to be repeated in the present. I'm really curious how DR dreams about this future and how all the doppelgängers are connected. It's quite funny to see the present time counterparts, like Mom and Jinjoo, knowing their relationship in the past.
The little girl with the special hearing ability of mermaids really intrigues me right now. I can't wait to find out why she has this ability and I hope to see more of her interactions with Chung.
JJ is already falling for Chung and he's totally denying it. XD It's so funny watching him being unaware of his feelings and claiming he doesn't care and just kicks her out, yet installing the tracking app and hunting her down. LOL I also love how Chung always surprises him. She's not just some dummy; she's different in his eyes and stands out--from showing concern for his injured hand to earning money and giving it all to him. It bewilders him and catches him off-guard, which is why he can't help but be curious about her, amused by her, worried for her, and just drawn to her. Hope this continues since the advice he gives to her about protecting oneself first and being worried for oneself first doesn't really seem to be the philosophy that's he's following when it comes to Chung. =P
The ending was sorta expected since it couldn't be that easy for them to just meet at Namsan, confess, and get together. I'm sure they have hurtles to overcome before we get to that point. But CH being the driver that hit her did surprise me. Did he just follow JJ out of curiosity of meeting him? Was he going so fast that he didn't spot Chung standing there? In any case, now I'm wondering if it's gonna be a hit-and-run. I'm also worried for Chung since the car probably hit her legs? And legs are a weak spot for mermaids according to what we learned from Joseon times, which makes me wonder whether it means they can never turn back into mermaids without their legs, and if it somehow means they won't be able to survive on land, or what the consequence may be...
Anticipating ep. 6!!

To be honest, I'm not crazy over this drama, but I find it more and more interesting, entertaining, light and plain fresh. The Joseon period is captivating, and the modern era story keeps me giggling like a crazy person everytime I recall it.
One thing about this ep though...it makes me wonder about whether CH is a good person or a bad person like his mom. I agree that it was an accident. But I wonder if this accident (and how furious JJ will be if he found out!) will change his relations with JJ.
Since I watched too many dramas, my first thought would be that he will save her, and eventually fall for her. And btw, the mermaid will have amnesia in addition to her inability to turn to mermaid because of the accident. Cue CH to enter her life as the third wheel, and JJ to find her afterwards, being completely jealous and all, but still in denial. Lame scenario, I know. But we still have 15 more ep to go. :p
My second thought....the mermaid will have amnesia, and will be unable to turn to mermaid, and CH will take a good care of her, but learning that she is special for JJ, he will make use of her to get JJ do anything that he wants.
I dunno what kind if guy CH is. But it makes me nervous thinking what ifs already. (Ok, perhaps I am crazy about this drama, but only a bit)

Oohhh you're right!
Can CH be good or are we gonna get another brothers war over the girl? I think we might! Ye olde Love Triangle just entered the building... And here I was thinking Shi-Ah was the only contender...
Alas...that would mean employing the amnesia trope though ...hehe
Next thing is will he be smitten for real or to get at JJ?

It will break my heart a little though, if the brother is evil. He might be. If that is correct, our otp really is surrounded by evil people. Stepmom, stepbro, killer on the loose....and with fellow conman hitting on his bracelet, we really cant say he has sturdy ground to stand on.

Hi Bunny! I'm holding out hope that CH will be a good guy. He seems quite aware that his mom is up to no good--enough to purposely drop her cell and conceal JJ's address plus tell Dad about not letting his mom know that Dad is looking for JJ... He seems curious about his stepbro and wants to get to know him. Whether or not he has any ulterior motives is too early to tell at this point. And he did look quite stricken after hitting Chung. Let's just wait and see... It could go the love triangle route though I hope it doesn't. I kinda wish this mermaid can be the two brothers' secret and they both help her navigate this world.
Don't know if you saw Cinderella and Four Knights. But I kinda wish CH is like Bodyguard Lee, who only pretended to appease his mom to fight for the inheritance and the chairman's company. In the end, he pulled a fast one on his mom and remained loyal to the chairman and the cousins.

Is the gisaeng really the stepmother’s historical counterpart? They have such different faces...I'm pretty sure it's two different actresses. (While we're on the topic...is the actress playing the gisaeng the same one that played the evil nurse in Signal? She looks so familiar...)
I got a kick outta watching Joon Jae bribing everyone to take Chung's flyers, and the lady laughing at him thinking he was mooning over her ?
I keep waiting for Joon Jae to notice that Chung is still wearing his "magic-trick" necklace. She's had it on for the past few episodes. He won't remember giving it to her of course, but it would surely start to turn some wheels in head...right? I'm sure it has to come into play somehow.

This episode definitely went to Joon-jae! I loved his Daddy Long Legs antics and I had a feeling he wasn't going to completely cut her off even though he acted like that towards Chung.
And after that ending, I need this next episode like now. I was thinking what if they give the mermaid amnesia?! Isn't that like mandatory in dramas after a car of doom hits our heroine in the street? lol

I'm trying to remember the last drama I've watched where a vehicle of doom struck a major character and said character either didn't have amnesia from it, or didn't fake having amnesia either.
Related, I heard a rumor that Truck of Doom is inconsolable because it was informed it was the wrong fit for that scene, given the chaebol driver.
ToD was overheard admitting that it has never had the experience of hitting a mermaid before, and would have liked to have the opportunity to grow as a vehicle of doom character in a modern mythical fantasy fusion drama since it rarely gets casting calls for the historic mythical fantasy fusions.
ToD was reportedly last seen in a poorly lit alley. One witness said it appeared ToD had copious amounts of wiper fluid running down its grill, with the occasional sound of its horn honking in between windshield wiper swishing, making for a sorry sight.

Like from what we've seen she could probably throw that car, so the fact that it could hurt her...idk, I don't know how mermaid powers work ?
I just hope she's not out of commission for most of the next episode, that'll be boring...

Imho, all superpowers should come with invincibility/indestructiblity.
Whenever I care for children and they say it's not automatic I get annoyed. I mean Superman and Wonder Woman aside, what about Spiderman, Captain America, Flash, Martian Manhunter, Miss Martian? They get minor wounds or injuries when they should die.
Not to mention, Venom whose suit protects him, Beast Boy whose shape-shifting helps, Super boy who has half-kyptonian dna. Even villians, Green Goblin at times is nearly indestructible. Poison Ivy, Catwoman can survive and have super healing.
Anyway, having some superpower means survival.

Depending on how deep she swims, most of her life she has had to maneuver in water, which is harder to do than air. It's not near the same difference between gravity on earth and the moon, but I think it's worth considering. Such a difference wouldn't make her unbreakable, it's just that she's used to living in an environment that is denser than air, hence where her strength comes from.
So the way I see it, her legs are really strong (notice they have her kick over punching) because somehow the muscles when she transforms are the same ones she uses to propel herself through water all the time. As to her hand/arm strength, I'm falling back to the depth issue. I'm actually trying to recall the fight with the gangsters now as to how often she did hit them with fists or elbows. I remember even on the bike, she was kicking.

A person isn't usually thought of as a vehicle, so I guess humans don't count even if person of doom sounds cool in its own evil/cursed way.

I told him that truck isn't as big as the usual ToDs, so he wondered if maybe it attended tryouts to join the Vehicles of Doom union, and was told it was too small, hence why it's sad.

Musical scoring could b better. The music used for the fighting scene at the start of the episode seemed not apt. It could have been suspenseful and gripping but sadly it didn't have that effect.
I have watched YFAS and BOF, Heirs and I am convinced that JJH and LMH can have great chemistry with the ones paired with them. I have watched LOTBS from episode 1 but I still have to experience a heart-thumping feeling when the two are together. I said "I still have" because I am open to the possibility of going through it in the succeeding episodes but so far the romance is not emotionally resonating with me.

@Klurker... I've rarely watched a drama and been utterly blown away by the chemistry with the rare exceptions of Marriage Contract, Rooftop Prince, everything Lee Jong Suk has been in, Kim Soo Hyun in Producers, YFAS and even in Moon Embracing the Sun; though Han Ga In's acting was a little iffy... Song Joong Ki in almost all his works...etc.
That said...i like to categorize chemistry between leads into three groups: hot sexy chemistry, cute sweet chemistry and goofy zany chemistry ...
I also think leads can transition through these types like phases...
Present Joon Jae won t click with Chung's hyper borderline stalkerish love for him now cos he is a cynic (and a bit annoyed that he can't remember her) at a hot/sexy chemi level... but there are shades of cute/sweet and goofy/zany chemistry to my eyes...
Past Dam-ryung and Se Hwa are a more hot/sexy chemi level cos they have already acknowledged their feelings but we can't see depth since they are surrounded by danger and there is no room to explore...
On a critical level...LMH really has work to bring about chemistry with his co-stars...i haven't dug the chemistry with any of his co-stars except with Son Ye Jin in Personal Taste... and that was at that level
...as in, a LMH drama level...lol
Dunno maybe he has a specific style he gets giddy over...as opposed to Lee Jong Suk who seems to like all women, hehe...
Maybe he is shy... he does seems introverted IRL...
Any way he is doing well so far...so here's to hoping he can up the ante to a hot/sexy/sweet/zany melting snowball of chemistry.

I'm happy to stay at the goofy/zany chemistry for the time being, precisely because Joon-Jae is annoyed with this weird girl who doesn't answer his questions. And he's cynical/uninterested about love in general. Perrffect. I love to see a character fall slowly and without realising it (lol, hiding behind that cart was golden).
LMH had amazing chemistry with the leading actress in Faith, by the way.

I don't remember the ages of all his female co-stars, but I have noticed he seems to have the best chemistry with those that are older than him. It might be that those actresses simply have more experience with love lines, so it flows more naturally and is less stilted.
I think for this show so far, they've had her modern self play the inexperienced type who is discovering what's beyond the innocence gate. I think of similar reactions from younger school girls in the youth shows when she has her "He likes me!" sorts of moments. She doesn't quite squeal, but she definitely seems a bit beside herself in glee.

My favorite thing about this show is the role reversal -- how she is the one always making his heart flutter by casually saying "I love you," invading his personal space, and whispering in his ear. That is something usually reserved for leading men in an effort to make female viewers swoon. Not to say Joon Jae isn't swoon-worthy; he is such a marshmallow paying kids off so she can finish her job faster. I get a kick out of how Chung calls him by his full name every time. The storyline seemed one-note and not very straightforward when it started so some found it plotless... I also think people had some extremely high expectations from the writer and were kinda writing the drama themselves in their minds lol... So when it didn't happen their way...it became a 'no-plot' accusation.
I definitely like the show as it is though. And I am happy to say its currently my crack!

Totally agree with you on the super high expectations. This show had some YFAS-sized shoes to fill. Plus the pacing is pretty slow, added to which, it kind of feels like we reset to the beginning after the kiss, which also makes it feel like not a lot has happened.

i think personally the no plot accusation is more to do with the execution and pacing and its less about people wanting everything handed to them, i suppose when you have 20 eps your gonna take all your time. idk whether that's good or bad cause while i think the show isnt bad its more like its on cruise control that sometime i think if it would have benefited from 16 eps, it gives that feeling off no plot. personally for me i watch it as a pass time not because im crazy hooked . i think a lot of people enjoyed 1% because everyone knew it was a full on rom com with all the cliche's but they made those cliche work along with the leads crackling chemistry and dimensional characters. it was all about their love story plus it had shorter eps then normal prime time drama's. sometimes it is hard to come by a rom com where you are genuinely hooked and the chemistry is good. one thing i would comment on is the supporting characters in this drama, it just feels like they are there, like window dressing.

I do agree with you.
The pacing ...etc..etc for sure makes it look like nothing much is happening... the question here then becomes how 'much' stuff does one want to see happen in an ep.? More so.. in this very rom-com genre we are placing it in... I just see the a lot of people wanted YFAS 2.0 and didn't get that. But I know some still enjoy it nonetheless, like myself...
It could go a bit faster I agree....but its still telling its story...i do wonder who the slacker in production is, who is dragging things out...lol (sarcasm) No but really...the supporting cast do seem not to have much to do...but i wouldn't say it's as bad as those on the drama Hyde,Jekyll and Me.... now that was proper window dressing...
I feel like the supporting cast will each get their time to shine in keeping with the draggy* lol, pace. For instance...i love that little girl who seems like a little guardian Angel for our mermaid and the homeless lady who helps her navigate and know the city's ways better...and its nice that they seems to be random people... not those who already seem tied to our mermaid... who knows what else could be in store?

Curious aso if the stepbrother will be good or bad. I hope he's good please. Worried also for Chung, i hope her legs are ok. Felt emotional to see her tears fell before she closes her eyes. This show is such a breezy watch. I love it. I have a feeling things could get tenser soon though...
1. The stepbrother is getting in on the action
2. Shi-Ah's true intent will be revealed sooner than later with Chung looking like a threat to her
3. Con group next target being close to Joon Jae's real omma
Cant wait!
Things I enjoyed on this ep! Seeing that the homeless fashionista and little girl Yoona are recurring cast! Yay! Love them both.
Funniest scene out of the many for me was Chung watching the first snow drama...lol. What a hoot!
Favorite mystery....those three mermaids in Joseon who called out to Se Hwa...what was that about? Ooooh I got chills...
And just how long can a mermaid survive out of water...aka. Their natural habitat?

And now the accident?! What could be its overall effect? Bad seems likely!

Oh nooo. Please don't go 'An Affair to Remember' on us, show! That was so heartbreaking, gah! --And this is after all the cuteness...
Yes, this could be about reincarnation of sorts in an unending loop. That they are bound to always meet and be together briefly but they always end up badly. The present might be different in that they may end up being really together for good after maybe doing it differently or you know breaking some rules or probably actually following them, if there are indeed rules or you know, variables? The little girl might really help her this time.
I can't wait for the next episode! Thank you so much for this recap, GF!

Poor Jin-joo... She got her wish to be born again as a rich madam... but the thing is money can't buy you class... LOL
Jun-jae is so adorable in this episode. He keeps saying one thing, but doing another. LOL. I hope he won't let our cinnamon roll, Chung, being outside for way too long. Seeing her being homeless in cold weather is really heartbreaking.
And I just knew Chung was not gonna make it. It's just Kdrama thing. When everything seems going so smooth, it's time for truck/car of doom to strike back. I hope he won't misunderstand the situation as him being stood up again though. I hope he'll find out Chung's whereabouts from his tracking apps and realize that there's something wrong with her.

It's actually quite fun to match who's who in both timelines and I can't wait until we see Namdoo, Taeoh and Siah as well.
Joonjae behind the cart was so funny. My cheekbones hurt so bad. I like how there's sad parts and funny parts instead of just dealing with one.
Lee Jihoon's character reminds me of Park Haejin's character in Stars, the vibe it gives off. I hope this will be a good platform for him to be more known by people. He's a really good actor.
Anyway, why do I feel like the writer is doing this to Shin on purpose? Is this a sort of a running joke? "Give him a few lines, don't make him speak. At least he's not in a coma." OTL

okay, this was the best episode so far. it feels like it's starting to find its groove, although it is a bit late. finally it feels like a plot and conflict is forming, though again, it's really late, and it's not even fully formed! i think the fact that sung dong-il's menacing present day presence has been amped up helps a lot—brings some much needed excitement and life into the show.
i still don't understand why se-hwa is chasing after joon-jae, though. she erased his memories, but she still followed him halfway around the world... i don't understand her motives.
i remember what javabeans said about wanting to stay in the joseon timeline because that story felt more compelling. i didn't necessarily agree until after this episode. while the modern day stuff is MUCH improved with this installment, i really liked the joseon stuff today. i think if they had just told the sageuk story, it would have been amazing. maybe even more so—i think the joseon part looks so much more beautiufl. the back and forth between joseon and present day feels a bit old hat, though it's still fun.
i'm still going to complain, though, that some of the gags feel forced. i don't find most of them particularly funny. i don't understand why se-hwa hanging her head over the ladder looking like a water gwishin is supposed to be laugh inducing? you who came from another star had a lot of hilarious elements that felt natural, but here a lot of them have felt forced.
but—i do like hong jin-kyung a lot here. didn't like her so well in you who came from another star, but she's a riot here and i absolutely love her. the fashion-obsessed homeless lady made me laugh out for real for the first time.
it's regrettable that the first four episodes seemed to lack plot (at least for me), and that we only just now seem to be getting to the meat... i hope.

I can't speak for everyone, but when Shim Chung hung her head out of the door, and all you could see was her long hair spilling over her face and with the sound effects, it gave me Ju-on vibes that was somewhat creepy. And Joon Jae's reflection of how I was feeling in that moment made it funny.
Other things over the various episodes that particularly stand out as being funny to me was the part where she misunderstood and thought the students ate their friends, Joon Jae's cluelessness over how the thugs were dealt with in episode 2 (?) as well as the way Shim Chung grabbed his birthday cake with her bare hands.
On that note, I don't find that some of the other stuff feels forced; they just aren't that funny to me. And that's okay, because everyone's sense of humour is different.

there were some sparkling moments... but when compared to man from another star (ugh, i've got to stop comparing!), the comic moments don't feel quite as natural or as sophisticated.
the instances you mentioned: chung/se-hwa thinking the students ate their friends (well, doesn't she eat fish? haha), and the birthday cake scene—were examples of stuff i thought felt forced. the thug stuff i did find amusing.
i get that the eating friends stuff was wordplay, but it felt like it was just put there to try and get some laughs out of viewers. not necessarily sophisticated comedy. same for the eating cake with hands thing.
but i agree, humor is subjective and it also really depends on the mood you're in while watching. god knows i've lost my soul many times over laughing over things in movies that appealed/made sense to me.
the only thing i can remember finding genuinely funny is hong jin-kyung's appearances. her first appearance had me cracking up. i read somewhere in the comments though that she's only making cameos, which is disappointing!

So far this is my favourite episode ?
From reading the recap and previous comments, I gather that people are starting to like the current timeline. I'm also happy people are appreciating LMH's role (Even I criticised his acting in previous dramas, but here he is proving himself.)
I think the little girl can hear the mermaid because she is pure of heart (innocent). A few episodes back we saw a little guy cruising with his parents recognise Chung as a mermaid, but his mom brushed it off as his imagination.

And I would like to ask people ignore comments that state the drama is boring. Everyone has their own taste and let them express it. People loving this drama do not need validation (from those that differ) to keep supporting this drama. Let's not ruin the experience for people who enjoy this drama and visit DB to share the goodness. It really dampens the mood when the first thing you see on logging in is people arguing.

I'm still watching because there are some fun and poignant moments sprinkled throughout the episode, and I want to see what happens in the Joseon era. That being said, I'm not rushing to see it every week nor am I all that invested in the characters. Hmm, not saying I'm too disappointed in the show - it's still way better directed and written than a lot of other dramas out there - but maybe I was expecting to be fully immersed in the story and relationships between characters. It hasn't happened yet, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
What makes me kind of sad, though, is that it's the first time I'm not staring starry-eyed at Lee Minho. Maybe I've matured beyond simply liking an actor for their looks and screen presence (lol doubt it). Maybe his current character isn't my cup of tea, yet. Or, maybe I've seen some great actors this year who are both handsome as heck and can seriously make you fall in love with a character because they fully embody their character on screen (Park Bo Gum, anyone?), and it's becoming apparent that LMH can do well in some roles but has trouble emoting with his eyes and voice in others. Does anyone else feel that way?

"That being said, I’m not rushing to see it every week nor am I all that invested in the characters."
THIS.
This is pretty much what - for me - defines a "good" drama from an "excellent" drama. Unfortunately, my expectations from LOTBS was a lot higher considering how much you can play with story when you're dealing with the fantasy genre - you can literally take it anywhere. While it's not bad - there's something coherently missing from the show - it's like I can't buy JJH and LMH's inexplicable fated love story.
Anyway, I'm going to continue watching because I want to give it the benefit of doubt that this whole story will tie in together at some point…or maybe the later 50% of the show will because more engaging.

i feel exactly the same way. while i look forward to the drama, i'm just not sucked in. the story has been slow to develop—the conflict should have been present last week at the latest. and we still have no idea why this mermaid erased joon-jae's memories but is still persisting to stay in joon-jae's life.
despite this episode being much stronger than the first four, and perhaps will signal that the rest of the drama will be strong, i'll still always be quite disappointed that it didn't have a stronger start.
i thought if anything, it was the acting we might have to worry about. jeon ji-hyun might have been only good as cheon song-yi, and lee min-ho i was always concerned about. but i never thought it was the actual story that would end up failing me, given the writer's track record.

I didn't have high expectations for this drama cause it was hyped so much and hype usually ends in something mediocre, I can't say I love it much, but it is enjoyable watch, especially when you ignore things like the only man Mermaid met in Spain turned out to be Korean and that she who could speak perfect Korean 400 years ago suddenly forgot it but did learn it in one night and that mermaid eats ramen and likes it, I mean it is weird she adjusted to new menu so fast, this and some other things that feel so unrealistic turn me off, but well, never expect too much from a drama

Your complaints are easy to answer.
1. Maybe all the mermaids are/or look Korean, cause every mermaid we have seen have had east Asian facial features.
Instead of over thinking it maybe she just swam there.
2. The mermaid from 400 years ago and this mermaid are not the same. Hence different tail/language

This episode was fun !
They don't deter me from enjoying the show, but there are some very minor details I've been wondering about:
- does Chung's legs go back to a fishtail if she takes a shower or a bath ? I'd assume so (since it happened at the aquarium + she's been careful when it rains). Has she taken any at JJ's house?
- does she not miss swimming, specially when there's a swimming pool at JJ's place ?
- will JJ make sure to have salt water in his swimming pool when Chung will permanently live with him?
- for someone who got legs for the first time in her life (I assume), the mermaid is walking fine (even in Spain) and doesn't seem tired.
- does Chung know Spanish ?
- in earlier episodes, I was wondering if JJ was a descendant of Dam-ryung and Se-Hwa, and if he has thus inherited some skills to intrude in people's mind. But it seems he's not a descendant and is a reincarnation of Dam-ryung instead.
- did JJ give Chung a phone battery charger too or did he think she would be back to him within 24 hrs ?
I guess I'm not too curious about the storyline, as I'm just going with the flow...

(Hi! I'm new to these boards :) Waving hello to everyone!)
Loving this series so far. I am a huge fantasy/supernatural genre fan and am delighted to see these kinds of stories played out in dramas.
I would like to say something about the comments regarding illogical plot points or lack of this/lack of that...
Enjoying fantasy stories requires a suspension of disbelief. Let the story play out in your imagination where it is meant to.

I'm not a LMH's fan but I do like his acting here. Maybe because his character is sort of tsundere? He's more alive here than he was in Heirs. I know I shouldn't compared but as actors, you kind are guaranteed to be compared from previous works, right?
JJH as usual, dazzles and shines well. She's particularly the reason why I'm still watching this show. I think all the actors are doing a good job in their portrayal. I love how it is filmed but my only problem here really lies in the writing. I don't know why but it just feels toooooo eerily similar to YFAS. I'm sorry, that's just me though? Because the whole similar antics and the whole villain. Like as much Shin Sung Rok's portrayal was daunting and creepy, I NEVER STILL, even if it's my 3rd time watching the series why he is evil. I don't even get the villain here as well. Like this writer likes to add fluff and random villain for the plot to move forward?
Also, the chemistry is okay...the only electrifying chemistry he ever had was with PMY.

Finally caved in an started watching Lobster. I have to say it's better than what I expected. The plot seems simple (mermaid meets boy in past and present), but the double story poses many questions that drive the drama:
- What is the significance of the green jade bracelet? How come Joon-Jae seemed to recognise the name Dam-Ryung when he heard it was scribbled onto the bracelet?
- How come Dam-Ryung can see his future self on that jar? Did he draw it?
- Are we talking about the same mermaid? (I think the show is establishing that no, they are two different mermaids).
If I had to summarise this show so far, it's giving me the feels of the first two episodes of Gu Family Book (especially that OST), and it is exploring the idea of reincarnation in a satisfying way, kind of how Rooftop Prince might have been had we seen more of the Joseon-era story.

This was such a great episode. I love where the story is going and I love how the writers, actors, and directors are taking us there. I love every touch of it, and it's incredibly rare that I notice myself appreciating every choice the dramamakers made. SC's conversation with the fish at the market, and the little girl's presence in the story...these little things add so much to it. I'm enjoying it even more than You From the Stars.
JJH is probably my favorite kdrama actress at this point. She's too special!
Of course I laughed a lot throughout the ep, but I also felt strong emotions when SC had to leave HJJ's house.
I since episode 2 that our modern day heroes are the reincarnated versions of those from the past, but after this episode I am also thinking that the greatness of the sea that JJ's mom was talking about could possibly just be his chaebol dad, and not a mermaid connection? Mom was a fancy lady in the past life it seems, and not a merperson either. Just thinking it out. It would be really cool if he were part merman though.

i really liked the scene where he was helping her with the flyers behind the scenes...
BUT
for some reason i just cant buy the romance??? like...dude he just randomly picked up this girl he met at the aquarium and let her live with him...WITH NO QUESTIONS ASKED? and to anyone, she's a friggen nut job and a crazy crazy...like the first time he met her, he at least called her "dong dong" and thought she hit her head and forgot everything and was crazy, but in this 2nd encounter, he never even acknowledged her craziness!
like the whole scene with the people coming out of the tv...if anyone ever said that to me, i'd think they were crazy, or joking, or at least say "are you serious..?" but this entire time no matter how crazy the mermaid's been acting, joon jae has just been acting like its no big deal!
