The Man Living in Our House’s farmer stepdad and tipsy heroine
by girlfriday
Here’s our first peek at KBS’s new Monday-Tuesday drama The Man Living in Our House, the romantic comedy based on a webtoon with a very bizarre premise: A woman goes back to her hometown sometime after the death of her mother, and discovers a strange younger man living in her house claiming to be her stepfather. Lead actors Su Ae (Mask) and Kim Young-kwang (D-Day) began filming for the drama, and here’s a glimpse of them in character as a young farmer with a dark past and a flight attendant who’s had one too many drinks.
The “twisted family tree rom-com” stars Su Ae as a flight attendant who’s leading a double life. She has anger management issues and keeps everything under wraps at work, and then blows off steam by herself, which explains the drinking in the scene below. She’s engaged to investment manager Kim Ji-hoon (Jang Bori Is Here) and waiting for him to propose for going on nine years now. That can’t possibly end well.
The heroine makes her way back to her hometown, but when she gets there, she finds Kim Young-kwang living in her mother’s house, insisting that he married her mother before she died. He’s a reformed gangster who’s experienced hardship beyond his years, and now lives a quiet life as a farmer. He wants to protect his family, while the heroine wants to prove that he’s a fraud.
Lee Soo-hyuk (Lucky Romance) co-stars as a wealthy man with a complicated family tree of his own, and the only thing he believes in is money. He’ll be Kim Young-kwang’s rival, while Jo Boa (Monster) will be Su Ae’s rival and co-worker. She lies in an effort to keep her poverty a secret and knows how to use her looks to her advantage. PD Kim Jung-min (Princess’s Man) and writer Kim Eun-jung (Flower Boy Next Door) are at the helm.
I have really fond memories of Su Ae’s last rom-com, Bottom of the 9th With 2 Outs, and her drunken stills are already pretty adorable. The premise still sounds wacky to me, but really, if there’s a good romance at the heart of it, I’m sure I’ll be pulling for them to un-twist their family tree in no time.
The Man Living in Our House follows Moonlight Drawn By Clouds and premieres October 24.

If only all farmers could afford that luxury garb- he must be a very rich famer indeed. And sponsored by the ever present, all wonderful Subway. In fact there might just be a birth secret, throw in a few more chaebols, some family feud and here we have a recipe for ratings.

And the bike looks even more expensive. Maybe he took a few bundles of cash from his gangster boss' safe before reforming? :P

Farmers are rich. Don't underestimate them. I was working in plantation area years ago and that was the time I saw how rich the farmers could be. Their richness with those huge lands are similar with the city chaebols.

KDramas should take a cue from the Japanese ones on how to maintain a shabby look. They literally wear the same clothes over and over in the dramas. For instance look at all about the siblings lol.

I think Korean actors and actresses have magic hair that grows as long as they want, whenever they want,

I have seen the comments on older posts about this drama, and I'm curious, why does most people seem to be against Kim Young-Kwang as an actor? He was quite good in Plus Nine Boys. I believe most of the comments were saying that they don't like his personality, but is that the only reason?

All I remember is that he made some remarks about hating thick calves(on girls) and basically putting down a person based on appearances. I have no idea why that interview stuck on him and the long going hate with it.
I enjoyed him in Plus Nine Boys too. I think he'll do rom coms very well.

I really enjoyed him and his storyline in Plus Nine Boys too, and I think he has potential. And Su Ae is the GREATEST, so excited for her to return to this rom com.
But yes, many people, especially internationally, are quite disgusted with him due to the comments he made in a 2013 interview about disliking people (both male and female) for their bad physical appearance.
Someone like Sung Joon is forgivable for not showering before he appears in public, but if someone that doesn't look good doesn't shower, he doesn't even want to look at them apparently. I think people were more incredulous that he'd be so cruelly honest in a public interview, tbh. Just seems a bit thoughtless.
There are those who can separate the actor from the role, and some who can't. I'm not going to lie, I do have a bitter taste in my mouth, and honestly - 2016 has really gone for a lot of my fave actors (for good reason of course, I'm glad victims have spoken out, even if justice has probably not been served in many of the cases).

"(for good reason of course, I’m glad victims have spoken out, even if justice has probably not been served in many of the cases)."
South Korea is known for creating and/or releasing tons of celebrity scandals when the high and mighty want to cover up big issues - and recently there's been several issues that would "need" covering. For the general public there's just no way of knowing whether or not any of the celebrities or victims involved were telling the truth.
And with so many cases coming up at once and several of them sounding really dubious, I'd say chances are that at least some of the celebs were just being targeted. Which is awful both for them and for all real victims of such cases. A lot of people are suspicious at the amount of similar cases at once.
I wouldn't judge any of the involved based on things we have no real knowledge of.
---
Anyways, back on track, if KYK really said those things he does sound rather douchy. But for me it's more a matter of not being drawn to him as an actor. I think he did a fair job in Hot Young Bloods, but was annoyed with him in Pinocchio. So I'm pretty meh on the fact that he's going to star in this. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Your comment is the heart of the matter with regards to Korean cover up!!!
I hope the reading public will have the discernment for truth and falsehood of information.

yeah, i heard about this and it was a huge turn off too. i couldn't bring myself to like him much after that. not that i'd really liked him or anything before. but it was mostly all i could think about whenever he was onscreen in pinocchio.
i'm one of those that generally can't forgive/separate the acting from the personal life. it really depends on the transgression, and/or the number of them. also, how aware i was of the "scandal" when it happened. there are several variables that decide whether or not i get turned off by that actor, but i really don't want to watch or support actors that i think are jerks, assholes, or human trash. lee byung-hun, for one, is human trash in my book. the cheating incident i could give a pass, since that's his private life and the only person he wronged was his wife and family.
but the case with the canadian gymnast/kang byung-kyu forever marked him as human trash in my book. that was pretty close to a crime if anything. i can't like or support him knowing that.
kim young-kwang didn't certainly didn't commit a crime—the worst of what he did was running his mouth. but he was shockingly frank and he offended and hurt a lot of people with his words. it showed how deeply immature he was; that he was capable of such thoughts, and even worse, that he could say them aloud in public.

I hope Young-Kwang delivers. He's usually good, but I hope he'll be better, because I really want Lee Soo-hyuk to be the lead this time. But since he didn't get the part, I hope Young-Kwang gets to prove his worth. Fighting drama!!!

Me too. I have seen Kim Young-kwang is D-Day and Pinocchio and he is ok. I am ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ about him!
But I do love me some Lee Soo-hyuk voice. Sweep his hair off his face and make him speak... I am easy to please!

I really don't understand with all these negative comments though the drama not even started yet. If you don't like just stay away then.
Soo Ae always choose fresh storyline projects. So, I'm positive about this one since she insist to play even though the male lead not that popular. SO, the story must be interesting. Soo Ae fighting!!!

Lol, a red plaid shirt and a straw hat=instant farmer! I wonder what he's looking at in the stills. Will it be revealed in the drama or is he just waiting for his queue to act.
Soo Ae looks so cute with her glow. For some reason, I was wondering what her hair would look like in this drama and I love the full bodied wavy look she has rockin'.

I am so excited, it's sad. The countdown isn't that far away anymore. Don't want MDBC to end but really want these boys back on my screen. And a strange KYK is amazing!
Question: how can one be engaged but waiting for a proposal? Is that like they promised years ago but he hasn't fulfilled it?

I would be into this if KYK weren't the lead (or in it at all). In every bts, interview, and variety how I have seen him in, he comes off as such a douche he thinks mighty highly of himself and has some real backward views on women and looks. I loathed his appearance on WGM as Jung Hyun's friend (I know the White Christmas gang of models all still are really close). He was such an a-hole towards Yura and his personality was the worst.
I like Su Ae but another drama I am going to have to skip.
