The K2: Episode 5

Ruling the political sphere takes an iron fist, but when all the world is made of trust funds and unfaithful relationships, Yoo-jin begins to realize just how fragile her life could be. As her enemies encroach on her lifelong goals, protecting what’s hers will only become more important to secure her future. And while gaining someone’s trust is never easy, she at least has one bodyguard she can depend on, even if his presence makes her both safe and scared for what may come next.

EPISODE 5 RECAP

Upon noticing a shadow on the rooftop, Je-ha tries calling Mi-ran. There’s no answer, so he hops across and peers over the roof… to see Anna nibbling on uncooked ramyun. She isn’t alone either, as the kitten eating by her feet paws at her for more food.

But Anna denies the petite feline of the noodles, replying that it’s too dry—the same words Je-ha told his stray kitten in Episode 1. She eventually gives in and offers up some chewed-up noodles, to the kitten’s delight.

Je-ha watches on with a warm smile as Anna sends the kitten off to its mother. But then Anna immediately breaks down sobbing, recalling her mother’s final moments, and Je-ha sits and waits where he is.

He follows Anna back inside as the latter checks the camera before collecting the thermal blanket acting as a heat mass. She carefully slips back into bed, leaving Je-ha struggling to crawl into the attic.

He first checks on Anna, and upon seeing the thermal blanket, he quietly chuckles at the brilliantly simple switcharoo tactic. Among the piles of books in the room, he picks up an old photo of a young Anna in happier times with both of her parents.

The following morning, Mi-ran kicks herself when she realizes that she’s missed Je-ha’s call last night. She wonders what hurry he could’ve been in on his very first night, then rushes into the kitchen to fix him a homemade meal.

Unfortunately for her, Je-ha is long gone when she drops by the security room all dolled up. Which means she has to watch the other bodyguard (the Special Forces hoobae) K1 wolf down that food instead.

Mi-ran worries that Je-ha will be tired after his night shift, which prompts K1 to ask if she’s still feeling hot from last night because he saw her on the computer monitors. Oh no, dude—that makes you sound like a perv.

And that’s exactly how Mi-ran takes it, reeling in disgust before storming out.

Following a post-soccer game lunch, Representative Park sends each assemblyman off with a box of vitamins which are filled with wads of cash. His secretary informs him about the recent death of Yoo-jin’s aunt, Choi Sun-ja, whose husband runs an international finance conglomerate.

Representative Park believes attending the funeral will be a wonderful opportunity, and his departure is witnessed by Je-ha, who watches from above.

As Secretary Kim does Yoo-jin’s makeup for the funeral, the latter wonders if her aunt’s death sets a precedent for those who die childless. Despite her great wealth, her aunt died alone in a sanatorium, and Yoo-jin claims she only looked after the old woman in her final years in order to acquire her JB Group shares.

Secretary Kim disagrees, believing that both Yoo-jin and her aunt cared for one another. Yoo-jin sees their relationship as a “misery loves company” situation, chuckling to herself that she has no niece of her own. Her deceased aunt will look so pale today, she notes, though that will be of use to Yoo-jin today.

Je-ha is pulled back onto the road by Chief Joo when he arrives at the office. In the car, Chief Joo remarks how Je-ha’s revenge against Representative Park will be a slow play. Right now, they’re headed to pay their respects to their employer and the death in her family.

All the JSS agents are barred entry per the family’s request, though Representative Park drives on in. Yoo-jin and Se-joon are on their way as well, as the latter comments on how happy she must be to acquire her late aunt’s shares.

Yoo-jin isn’t so sure since her aunt leaves behind a husband and son whom she knows won’t easily hand over that stock. It doesn’t matter to her if that son isn’t related to her aunt by blood, since she thinks all sons tend to be pathetic. Oof, burn.

Chief Joo fills them in once they arrive and expresses his concern that the stringent security doesn’t allow the JSS to protect them during the funeral. Yoo-jin doubts that anyone would dare to attack them while Se-joon is with her, but since she is allowed two employees, Chief Joo sends in Je-ha and Team Leader Seo.

After Yoo-jin and her husband pay their respects, Je-ha grabs a moment with Yoo-jin alone to slip an item into her purse. He instructs her to press it once if she thinks something is off so he can listen in, twice if she’s in danger. When she asks, “And if I press it?” Je-ha replies “Who knows?”

We learn that the aforementioned item is a specialized pen with a limited range in reach. Inside, Yoo-jin sits in a locked room with the bereaved family along with her half-brother Sung-won, his mother, and his father-in-law. The attorney presents a briefcase containing Choi Sun-ja’s will, though confesses that someone present here has the key.

Everyone in the room turns to Yoo-jin, who realizes that the entire family was aware the key was in her possession. While the attorney reads the will aloud, Yoo-jin takes out the pen Je-ha had given her.

After the attorney is sent away, Yoo-jin presses the button once so Je-ha can listen in. It turns out Choi Sun-ja left her entire fortune to Yoo-jin’s non-profit organization, and Sung-won’s mother remarks how Yoo-jin can’t have everything, notably the presidency and JB Group.

It’s an open secret that Yoo-jin is using the JSS to monitor JB Group, though Sung-won jumps to his noona’s defense saying that she’s just looking out for him.

But we know that Sung-won would want those funds to circle back to the troubled JB Group, and his father-in-law is prepared to see that happen. How about Yoo-jin sell both the JB Group stock she’ll acquire from her aunt and the shares her scholarship foundation already holds to him? If she does, he’ll give those shares to his son-in-law.

He’s offering double the stock’s current value, believing that should be more than enough to pave the way into the Blue House.

Yoo-jin can hardly believe her ears as Sung-won’s father-in-law ups his offer to triple the stock’s worth. Se-joon thinks it’s a good offer, but it takes all of Yoo-jin’s willpower to reply in a level voice that she has no right in selling off a non-profit organization’s shares.

Her smile drops as she’s threatened how her scholarship foundation will soon call for an urgent board of directors meeting where they will appoint a new CEO. Yoo-jin angrily rises from her seat, accidentally sending the pen into Sung-won’s hand.

Sung-won clicks the button, which cuts off the feed to Je-ha’s radio. Back inside, Yoo-jin says any decisions made during a board of directors meeting without the CEO present is null and void. To that, Sung-won’s father-in-law replies that they plan on dismissing her from her position first, then seek to reinstate her after they sell the JB Group shares tucked within the scholarship foundation.

Furthermore, Sung-won’s father-in-law will financially support Se-joon’s presidential campaign. Yoo-jin grabs her phone, only to be told it wouldn’t work in this room. As the situation sinks in around her, Yoo-jin bursts laughing, dumbfounded by the absurd trap she’s stepped into.

She declares that her father worked to the bone to build up what JB Group is today, and outright argues against Sung-won’s mother whom she feels is no better than a former secretary her father took in as his mistress.

Outside, Je-ha worries that something might be going awry, though Team Leader Seo believes it’s your run-of-the-mill chaebols fighting over an inheritance. But Je-ha can tell that Yoo-jin is too proud to let her ambitions be bought, so he climbs out of the car with an umbrella in hand. Tell me he’s about to stir some shit up in here.

While Je-ha pretends to be on his phone while assessing the security detail outside the locked room, Yoo-jin is hit with more pointed barbs: “Do you know why your father didn’t choose you as his successor?”

“Because you’re a woman?” Sung-won’s mother continues. “No… because he didn’t love you.” She claims her father found out just how horrible a person Yoo-jin actually is, and knew what would happen to the company and Sung-won if he’d left JB Group in her hands.

Her father knew that Yoo-jin was trying to instate her husband as the President so that she could eventually have JB Group for herself. Sung-won’s mother can own up to her identity as a mistress, but that’s nowhere near as awful a person Yoo-jin has become. “Are you even happy?” she asks.

Sung-won finally intervenes, but the emotional spikes have already lodged into Yoo-jin, who fights to hold back angry tears.

Je-ha walks back to the hallway looking like a man on a mission. So when he’s stopped by the first bodyguard, he responds with a hard punch. He uses the umbrella to bring the next guard to his knees and sends him to the floor with a kick to the end.

He moves on by kicking down two more guards before plunging the pointy end of the umbrella into another bodyguard’s sternum. He whacks down another, then uses the umbrella to strangle a guard and then put him down with a few punches.

Lastly when Je-ha is kicked away, he responds with a final flip, dusts himself off, and picks up the umbrella.

Next thing we know, the fire alarm is going off, thanks to a bin on fire. The automatic sprinklers turn off before the guards can unlock the doors, though when they do, Je-ha is waiting with the umbrella. Aha, how convenient.

Everyone but Yoo-jin and Je-ha rush out of the building, and Je-ha opens the umbrella over her head. She looks up at him with wide eyes as he tells her that he’s called off the board of directors meeting. His lip curls up slightly as he tells her that they should get going, and Yoo-jin returns the smile.

He hands her a handkerchief, a thoughtful gesture that isn’t lost on her. With that, they step out together, and Yoo-jin thinks to herself how Je-ha had come to her aid even though she didn’t press the button twice.

“He knew that I needed him anyway,” Yoo-jin says to herself. “No one has ever made a move without my command before. But he… didn’t need an order from me nor my permission. That’s right, he wasn’t a hunting dog. He was a wolf. How dangerous. I’m sure I won’t be able to tame him.”

She stops abruptly when Je-ha places a hand at the small of her back. He tells her to straighten her posture and keep her chin up because her enemies are still watching her.

Yoo-jin walks past the family with her head held high, and her uncle finally speaks by calling off his security guards so she can pass. Se-joon makes some belated complaints, but Yoo-jin will have none of it today, telling him to take a separate car and make nice with Sung-won’s father-in-law.

Not too far away, Representative Park tsks over how some people are too greedy for their own good.

Yoo-jin sheds silent tears in the car before gruffly telling Je-ha to never act without orders again. He gives an apathetic yes, and they head back to the JSS headquarters.

Upon her arrival, the head of JSS proudly explains how he put an end to the board of directors meeting. He leans back when she draws near, and she gives him an uncharacteristically enthusiastic compliment. She’s here to check in on Cloud Nine, a secret Je-ha isn’t privy to.

Master Song walks out of the doctor’s office looking resigned after having to listen to the blow-by-blow account of Je-ha’s fight and rescue earlier today. He takes Je-ha out for a meal, feeding him handmade wraps.

The JSS doctor who couldn’t stop gabbing about Je-ha earlier is Doctor KIM MI-KYUNG, who counts down the last seconds of her shift. As soon as the cllock strikes six, she heads downstairs just in time to witness Master Song and Je-ha awkwardly act out a fake argument. Ha, is this an effort to try and impress the doc?

Je-ha worries how flat the floor is before Master Song flips him over. But then Doctor Kim rushes over to Je-ha’s rescue, hitting Master Song repeatedly with her purse. Although Je-ha is perfectly fine, Master Song gasps at the bloody tear on his bald head.

Turns out Doctor Kim’s purse is full of self-defense metallic objects, and she berates them both for putting on the act. When Je-ha stammers that he was just trying to be Cupid’s helper, she says a woman doesn’t fall for a man just because he’s a good fighter.

She softens when Master Song apologizes to her and Je-ha, and then runs after him, leaving Je-ha utterly bewildered. Ha. Next thing we know, Je-ha is celebrating with Master Song for successfully winning over the doctor. He jokes that the martial arts master owes him another round of meat, and smiles at the man’s concern for Doctor Kim.

When Anna emerges from her room to take a shower that night, Mi-ran and the housekeeper sneak into her room for their daily inspection. They don’t think much of the thermal blanket, and the housekeeper is concerned about how Anna hasn’t been eating much lately.

She sets a spread for Anna as usual, and a moment later, we see Je-ha entering the dining room and rolling up his sleeves. Are you going to make ramyun for her?

He runs back to the security room in time to watch Anna head downstairs. He waits with excitement as she makes her way to the dining room… and he proudly tells the monitors: “Ta-da!”

Sure enough, there’s a pot of boiling water on the stove, and both of them pump their fists. Je-ha kicks his feet up and watches with pride as Anna happily cooks her own ramyun. Both of their feet tap with giddy excitement.

And then, Anna suddenly stops dancing and looks up toward the security camera. She grabs a chair and climbs up on the counter and peers into the camera before covering it with a tissue.

Alarmed, Je-ha switches over to a different camera and spots her from a different angle. He jumps up excitedly as Anna continues cooking and starts dancing as if no one is watching. Her reaction has Je-ha utterly ecstatic and he’s beyond proud of himself for making Anna smile.

He keeps watching as Anna prays over her meal before joyfully digging in. His smile stays on his face as Anna bounces in her chair. He’s still in a good mood when he takes a smoke break—that is, until Mi-ran comes running in her not-so-athletic skirt and heels.

What follows is an awkward conversation with Mi-ran apologizing for not picking up his call last night. She lies that she was torn, and she blushes when Je-ha sighs that his number should’ve been a priority.

She takes every opportunity to cop a feel, and shares how it was so hard watching over Anna in Barcelona, especially when the girl was pining over her dad. That’s why Anna took every opportunity to escape and go find her father, which reminds Je-ha of his first encounter with Anna in Spain.

He smoothly slides away from Mi-ran when she shuffles toward him, asking why Anna’s father hasn’t come to see her then. She believes Anna’s father had no interest in seeing his daughter, especially since her relayed requests went unanswered time and time again.

She thought there might’ve been a slim opportunity when Se-joon had a business trip in Madrid, but he didn’t come see Anna then either. Anna ran away that time too, and her team had the unpleasant task of collecting her.

Je-ha comments on how sad that is, and Mi-ran misunderstands his words, thinking that he’s showing her sympathy. A moment later, Mi-ran takes a call and tells Je-ha that he’s off-duty tonight.

That’s followed by a call from Chief Joo, and Mi-ran gasps when she learns that Je-ha has been called to the ninth floor of the JSS headquarters. “You’ve been summoned to Cloud Nine!” she exclaims.

He has no idea where her astonishment is coming from, and when he climbs into the front of the car that picks him up, the bodyguard instructs him to sit in the backseat. But Je-ha insists on staying put, and he is suddenly met with respect by the other JSS agents.

He climbs into the elevator and presses the button for the ninth floor. He presses it again when the number indicating the floor doesn’t change, then the speakers asks him for an access card.

So he places his ID badge over the sensor which now grants him access. His eyes grow wide as the numbers tick upwards but the elevator descends underground and the doors open to an empty hallway.

COMMENTS

No matter how stellar the newest recruit may be, I think we can all agree that letting him in on the company secrets on the second day of the job probably isn’t the wisest decision. So while I’m torn over how his access to the secretive project keeps the plot moving and yet no rookie would ever be allowed to see behind the veil even on his best day, I’m willing to accept that in this world, Je-ha is being rewarded for going above and beyond in protecting Yoo-jin.

And despite Mi-ran’s excitement, we don’t know what Cloud Nine actually entails. At the very least, I’ll be happy if his entry comes with an increased emphasis on more serious narrative territory since I didn’t care too much for the comedic antics in the JSS headquarters. It’s hard to say whether joining this project will put Je-ha further from his personal revenge or get him a step closer to it, though Chief Joo’s remark that revenge is a slow burn makes me think we won’t revisit that plot point right away.

I’m more than willing to wait as long as the writing doesn’t spend too much time away from Je-ha’s personal aims and goals, or drama gods forbid, drop it altogether. If there’s anything these cliffhangers have taught me thus far is that they can build suspense, only to cut it down moments later. Even with the odd choices in writing so far, I still enjoy watching some of the minute details weave themselves back into the story, such as Se-joon’s previous lover as Yoo-jin’s new staffer (thanks to everyone who pointed that out!) as well as Anna’s claims about her father being in Madrid were in fact backed up with the truth.

That brings us to Yoo-jin, who continues to be a wonderfully compelling villain. Everything about her aunt’s death and inheritance made for an amazing watch—her inner fear that her aunt’s passing may say something about her own future or how her half-brother’s father-in-law threatened to cut her down in one fell swoop. Having her ambition exposed by the people she despises the most left her incredibly vulnerable, and we could see the mix of emotions washing over her as her tactics were spelled out before her.

And that makes her growing to Je-ha that much more important. Even in these handful of episodes, Yoo-jin and Je-ha have moved leagues beyond their initial stand-off at the estate. Her opinion of him began to change once he saved her from the burning car, and now Je-ha has given her another reason to ponder who he is to her. I loved her inner monologue of how he simply knew he needed to come to her aid and yet recognizes that the young buck will likely never be tamed.

She likely has no idea that Je-ha has now become Anna’s personal cheerleader at home, helping her cook ramyun and watching her from his monitor. Speaking of whom, we haven’t made much headway with Anna either, aside from learning that she continues to escape for a literal breath of fresh air. She may have won part of Je-ha’s heart, but I think we all know who has really won over ours: the hungry hungry kittens.

It's not a perfect show but the main leads are worth the time to give this show some love.

If you like watching a kickass, swoony, sweaty, abs defined person like JCW, then go watch this show! You won't be disappointed with so much JCW goodness.

There's also an adorable kitten to look out for.

Main leaders are rocks. Here i mean JCW and SY, but not include Y. I find her not quite manage to deliver a character with social problem very well. I'm afraid she hasn't succeed to be all out about her characters. I don't sense her fear, her panic disoder, or her awkwarness around crowds. I just sense her as a mere upset daughter.

Funnily i also think JCW character is a little bit inconsistent. So maybe not all Y's failure but mostly because the writing failure. I don't know about Yoo Jin, but maybe because of SYa's acting is really excellent i almost see no flaws on Yoo Jin. The act makes up it all i guess..

To be fair, though, she hasn't actually been around crowds all that much that we've seen. When she ran into traffic in Spain, they explained that away by her reaction to sudden flashes of light.
And, in any case, I'm beginning to suspect that Anna's anxiety disorder is just an excuse to keep her away from the public eye and behind lock and key and not an actual condition.

Agreed. She's been brain-washed to 1) believe she was responsible for her mother taking the pills (rather than discovering her mother on the floor, with pills around her and a man waiting behind the door). Plus, the intentional use by a staffer of a camera's flash to keep her in line (2nd episode?) makes me think they did a psychological number on her to keep her cowed. She's started to figure it out (she said as much from the wheelchair when they first wheeled her into the house in Korea -- [SPOILER]).

Okay so this episode was kind of a filler episode. That said I still enjoyed it!

Today's theme: Je-ha makes waves in the development of his relationships with his two new girl pals.

Let's go over the highlights:

First, the memorial service and will reading. I'll admit, I didn't quite understand everything about the scene at the reading of the will. They seem to have been trying to play the scene like Yoo-jin was under some potential physical threat, but all I got was that she was under emotional (and political) threat. Anyway, the scene did work in that it resulted in Yoo-jin realizing two important things regarding Je-ha. Je-ha taking matters into his own hands without prompt from her demonstrated his inability to be controlled. At the same time, it positions Je-ha in Yoo-jin's mind as a potential romantic partner, at least in her eyes. His anticipation of her needing him in the will room and his decision to act in her interest without command really moved Yoo-jin. Je-ha's subsequent behavior towards her during their exit from the memorial grounds also emphasized the fact that Je-ha is not some servile underling, but a man standing as her equal. Notice her pause and momentary confusion when Je-ha placed his hand at the small of her back. It suggests genuine concern and dare I say affection on his part, and I think really sealed the deal in Yoo-jin's mind in how she views him. Even if Je-ha's actions are not motivated by any romantic interest, they are being interpreted by Yoo-jin as at least showing Je-ha to her in that light.

Second, the interaction between Anna and Je-ha at the house. I thought the roof scene was touching in that it successfully baited Je-ha's protective instinct. Anna's innocence and kind nature was showcased through her feeding and playing with the kitten. The scene also effectively showed Je-ha (and us) Anna's vulnerability. Her statement to herself when the kitty was meowing for food, "I'm hungry too." seemed to mean much more than those stated words. It seemed to speak to her deep desire for more, more than the life of captivity she's been forced to live. Her subsequent breakdown into crying evidence of her longing and despair.

Finally, the ramen scene. I'm sure Anna's ramen scenes are becoming a highlight for all you beanies lol. As indicated by many of past comments I've read, it seems the common assessment of these scenes is that they're more "ramen CF" than any real scene. Many take issue with Yoona's acting, characterizing it as overdone and fake (I even heard suggestions of lunacy). I'll respectfully disagree. My interpretation is that Anna's character is kind of an odd duck anyway. Hell, she's been held in captivity her entire life. During that captivity, she's had to be alone without emotional or intellectual interaction with basically anyone. Small inconsequential things, like being able to make ramen, would take on huge importance in someone's life under those conditions. Such an event would also function much like a proxy for the things Anna is unable to do given her situation. Faced with the despair of being unable to live her life, being unable to do the things normal individuals do, Anna focuses on some simple pleasure within her ability and means. Thus ramen becomes a manifestation of her longing for more.

Well, that's all I've got for now. I hope everyone is enjoying the show as much as I am (probably doubtful judging by past comments lol). In any event, I'm excited for what comes next!

Take care!

(P.S. The usual fanboy aside. The previews of Yoona singing Amazing Grace in the church in Episode 4 and this episode... Wow... So beautiful. So heartachingly beautiful. Never was there a more beautiful woman in a habit. And to think before this I never had a thing for nuns lol.)

the drama has so many flaw but I think it because lot of the scene happen for too long,
I really like the story of this drama anyway.

RE ANNA x YOO JIN X JEHA
I think Je ha fascination by Anna is because he already saw her depressed life and everything around it but she is just a simple girl, she can take the small happiness to smile while Je ha and Yoo jin hardly can.
Anna has nothing to be proud of or power but she seems to always try her best and just do what she liked, she never harmed anybody, and just like the ramen scene, when she can't cook it, eating dry ramen is okay for her.

Then Jeha also resonated with Yoo jin cause he understands what he feels, like comrades and he knew that she'll try to fight and she needs his help. But in her point of view, it's something that really leaves deep impact, she obviously impress by him and fall for each time when he seems to did cause that's the right way.

I think many scenes happens for too long to leave a good impact, the thrilling scene happens long but left many people impressed by it, the ramen scene is cute but too much cuteness can be cheesy

I think ep 6 is good,

Thank you Emanresu! You said most of what I wanted to, but was to lazy to type!

Seriously though, I totally agree with the points you made. Yoo Jin may interpret Je Ha's actions as romantic, but I think he sees them as doing a good job and protecting the person who will enable his revenge.

Regarding Anna and the ramen, she has almost nothing in her life to be happy about. She has very little control over anything, even what we eats. So to be enabled to not only eat what she wants but also to be shown how she can make it for her self in the future would be a tremendous boon. Even that though does not come without some element of resentment however. She is well aware that it is because Je Ha saw her on the camera, hence her need to cover the camera.

Last week, I know that some people were complaining that Je Ha seems to have fallen for Anna way too quickly. At this point, I don't see his interest as being at all romantic. I think that it is a mixture of pity, sympathy, and guilt for not helping her in Spain. We have been shown that Je Ha has a strong drive to help those in need. He also has the insight to see what the person really needs or wants despite what may be said. Witness his care for the Orchard rather than destruction that the old man said but didn't really want. Also, Je Ha seems to get not just satisfaction but some measure of happiness by making someone else happy. I think that if life hadn't dumped so much cap on him, Je Ha would have be a happily married husband and father who spent time helping others.

I think you missed the point of ramyan noodles completely. She has been living in a nunnery in Spain. In Asia, kids consume noodles all the times, especially when their parents work a lot, and they don't have time to cook, or when money for food is scarce. Anyway, I am betting that she has not have any noodle since living in Korea as a child.

Okay....let's talk about the ramen. She gave up the night before because she couldn't get the gas stove to work, but here we are the second time around only to find her cooking on a flat-top electric stove 3 feet behind the defunct gas stove! A total breach in logic (not to mention intellect) there.

My heart broke for poor Anna in that rooftop scene. I think it was able to capture her loneliness at losing both her mom (to an apparent suicide) and her dad (who she believes is being held captive against his will by Yoo Jin) and the current "imprisonment" that she is in. She has no family and friends around, no close aide that she can trust, probably has no belongings that she can call her own and unable to cook a proper ramyun for herself . She even considers the kitten luckier than she is for having a mother to go home to.

I guess Je Ha's fascination with Anna stems from the fact that their previous encounters have been under very strange circumstances, with Anna running around barefoot, disheveled and in a white night gown in Spain, and the other one where she was ordering him to go ahead and kill Yoo Jin. I agree with @BossyPixie also in that what Je Ha probably feels for Anna is a mixture of pity, sympathy and guilt. As he has not had a proper interaction with her yet, Je Ha is obviously intrigued and curious about her, too.

+1 I don't think it's romantic attraction yet. Anna seems like another lost kitty at this point. If I were Je-ha I'd probably cook ramyun for her too.

All of this.

I also think Jeha is intrigued by the two sides of Anna: her "pure innocence" (seriously, director, the frilly gowns and choral music and nunnery background and kittens...) and the darkness we saw when she was trying to run away and when she was screaming for Jeha to shoot Yoojin.

It's kind of like he sees himself in her - he is unable to kill anyone and has a strong sense of justice, but when he's in the thick of things you get a glimpse of this deep rage, which he covers with a cold expression.

Good point Jora16. I hadn't thought that Je Ha might see some of himself in Anna. There is a side to both of them that is hard and angry. Then there is the more hidden side that is part hurt and part what they would have been without the terrible events that have happened to them.

I honestly think, or maybe hope, that this drama is going to explore the struggle to be the person you want rather than the person circumstances or other people try to force you to be. It would be nice if it would also explore if a person can come back from "the dark side", so to speak, after being forced/choosing to go there because of the events of their life. I think that there is a great setup for this.

Exactly! Now that you mention it, this is a good setup for a sort of redemption arc, and also a good way to bring the two of them together, beyond the initial interest Jeha has shown.

Obviously you can never change the past, so that dark side won't go away, but I think it would be possible for them to fill in the gaps - "make each other whole", if we want to be cheesy. Jeha could be the stable, caring presence Anna craves, and Anna could be Jeha's anchor, a reminder that the entire world isn't against him.

The whole Ramyun Interludes thing is completely bizarre to me. It's tonally off, Je Ha is a completely different person, and I'm actually weirded out by the apparent crush he has on a woman whose actions so far are on par with a clever 11 year old.

It's bizarre to think that he spends his days with a woman who could give Machiavelli and Caesar a run for their money, then moons over footage of a woman who can't get ALL of her hair in a towel turban after a shower and doesn't notice the induction cooker RIGHT BEHIND the gas stove. AUGH.

I don't want to ruffle any feathers here, but many men are on some level attracted to women who behave in a "helpless" or child-like manner. Not to say they aren't attracted to strong, independent women as well. But there is definitely some base level attraction to women who display what are traditionally seen as feminine characteristics. Being vulnerable. Being somewhat ineffectual. Acting in a child-like manner. Being or at least appearing submissive in some respects. Giving the appearance of being innocent and/or naive. Women displaying these attributes can trigger in many men a protective instinct (and also predatory) that is very much intertwined with their sense and conception of their own masculinity.

I'm just curious - does this actually happen in real life or is this a trope in dramaland only??

Because I remember in my undergrad college most of the guys hovered around strong, confident, speak your mind, type of girls of the batch. I was this shy introvert kind and i used to wish that i could be as kickass as the popular girls

Honestly, I don't have the exact answer,
strong persona attracts people attention faster so it easier to see that the people fawn over them because people saw them, people hear about them and they are active,
shy persona or introverted girl also has their fair share of fan imo, but tbvh you need to also consider the appearance and their involvement on anything, if the shy girl didn't go anywhere or involve in many activities, no one really knew her so no one will like her either,
I think it's like the confident persona is more open so people can form their opinion on them while shy but passive just make people don't have any impression

in my experience,
the normal girl, the one who is not so overly confident or too shy actually got the most love letter they saw something unique and they like every interaction they had,

in this drama, not everyone attracted to Anna, her other bodyguard doesn't so I think jeha attraction to her is based on their interaction and his personal "feeling"

Tl;DR I think people attracted to others they can relate and most people with strong persona have spoken or displayed their thought and looked more easy to approach than people who usually not in the spotlight,
and this is just my opinion at this exact moment,
I may changed ..haha

0

I'd say it differs geographically. Like I grew up in the Bay area and true to your observation, guys flock like seagulls to girls that are confidently beautiful as opposed to the cute but meek introverted ones. However, some of my co-asian guy friends are often attracted to the feminine shyness of some girls. So my conclusion is that, yes it does happen not in kdrama land but it really depends on where you're at.

0

As I alluded to in my comment, the attraction to girls of this type is not at the exclusion of attraction to more aggressive, confident females.

However I will qualify that there are a whole slew of other possible factors that would come in to play. The most important of which is physical attractiveness. Personality takes a higher importance at a later stage.

0

"I was this shy introvert"

---

You will also notice that neither being shy nor being introverted were characteristics I mentioned in my original comment as being attractive in that particular sense.

Avoidance is not an attractor in the way those behaviors I listed are.

0

I second that. I know a lot of guys who get drawn to soft-spoken, innocent girls by virtue of how pure they seem. Trust me, these are the same guys who would love a girl to go down on them in public, but also have sweet fantasies about a gentle, motherly woman waking them up for breakfast every morning.
And personally, I have experimented socially with this as well (as twisted as it sounds lol). I'm normally very extroverted and outgoing, loud even, and guys treat me like a bro with no holds barred when it comes to dirty jokes and the like. But I trip over my own feet, can't lift a heavy bag or pop open a can, and all of a sudden all of them treat me like a whole other species and I can tell it makes them see me in a different light when I'm helpless. There's just this inner protective instinct that probably comes from being wanted or needed, and a lot of guys I know have it. It's weird, but it's true.

As someone who has a knowledge of psychology and has serve the army, oh and iam a guy too all I can is this, 1 of the reasons why armies don't let women serve in the front lines is this, men instincts to protect women becomes more apparent in dangerous situations in when we see a battle bro fall/hurt we can still retain a cool but revengefull manner, but when we see a battle sis fall/hurt our instincts kick in and prioritised on protecting that female and that's not good in a battle..now iam not degrading females here but males and females evolve differently, studies on this although it's still controversial shows its an instinct from our ancestors, men go hunt and fight to protect or conquer (it's litterally imbended in our psych, even males of different species shows this trait)while women tend for the kids and other chores..

Now I know this a romantic drama but I don't see Jeha falling for Anna yet, it's more on the sympathetic side and instinct to protect Anna and maybe even feeling guilt from their previous encounter, the whole ramune thing although sweet, is not necessarily on the romantic live side of things yet..

A little spoiler: in episode 6 you can see how Jeha's psych on this while talking about Renova to Yoojin..

Anna at her best is still teenager in mind and actions.. I think Je Ha is interested/infatuated with Anna because he never knew someone like that.. Someone so pure and innocent.
Well y'know in dramaland pure and innocent woman is a must for every heroine to get Oppa's love, while smart, cunning woman will be portrayed as evil and therefore not suitable for Oppa. P.S: may not applicaple for some dramas.

tbh I don't see Anna as "a woman whose actions so far are on par with a clever 11 year old"

well YoonA does look young and has the features of the child-like or soft feature, not the sharp one but I think Anna is quite clever,
she didn't raise any suspicion, she eats well, she can disguise her sleep state with electric blanket and realised the CCTV, she can climb to the roof and she runs away a lot in Spain,

I think the way it film and the length make it looked childish but she is quite normal imo, I don't get that she is displaying an 11 years old child,
she seems to knew what she wants and we have no scene about it, so I think she is okay,

and about a crush, I don't think it can calculate because all we see is Jeha one side crush on a girl and it wasn't that weird when a lot of people can have a crush on 1-minute appearance of a celebrity, especially if it make them laugh or feel happy so they anticipated the celebrity appearance in other show too

While her actions are on par with an 11 year old, she could just grown into a cunningly, devious, self-serving brat because its in her blood and if she does become one, that would make this show perfect as she could butt heads with Yoo-jin and we'll see who ends up being the better evil.

Most second female leads are often the cunning ones, so its not far fetched for Anna to reinvent herself and start acting like she really wants to make something out of her life and put a stop to her need to go find her dad because that's a wild goose chase and it gets tiring to keep watching her fail at it.

>>While her actions are on par with an 11 year old, she could just grown into a cunningly, devious, self-serving brat because its in her blood and if she does become one,<<

I am sorry but I honestly don't get this,
I don't think Anna act like 11 years old,
she just lived there and we have no screen time of her to know better, she acted perfectly fine, even when we consider her mental state and her locked away life,
then become cunningly, devious, self-sacrificing is not the sign of someone mature either,

ofc anna needs to step us his game but I don't think she needs to change her "real personality" cause we don't even sure what is her view on the situation right now,
what if she is right and she just powerless

0

Would I prefer Anna as a cunningly devious self-serving brat than a one dimensional Anna whose's purpose in life remains to be seen? I would definitely pick the former than the latter.

When you talk about character development, you want to see how the character emerges from his/her own identified opportunities. In Anna's case, she's been imprisoned from the world for so long which makes it challenging for someone like her to suddenly become socially interactive. It makes more sense that she grows into someone fueled by revenge than one that merrily dreams away that life is ramyun and carnival rides.

It would be intersting and unconventional if the show takes us on Anna's darker side because the psychological impacts of her imprisonment shows more versatility for her character. The ramifications of Yoo-jin's actions, her mother's death, her emotinal scars and distress really work up a bowl of hot revenge goodness. Rather than we get Anna to be just another damsel that needs to be saved, can we not get a vengeful Anna that can face her nemesis, get over her past, heal her emotional wounds and live the life she wants with minimal muscle support from Je-ha? That's a fair trade if you ask me.

Exactly-
You know, THAT is the biggest mystery to me.

Whatever deal was made about Anna, alienating her makes no sense. And I don't believe that a vulnerable 10 year old girl would be able to hold onto hate against a person if the person showed any warmth and affection towards her.
Stockholm syndrome and all.
OK, I do understand keeping her out of the public eye, but why not visit with her? Teach her the way you want her to be, make her a friend. Use her loyalty later to your own end?

I know this is a K drama with nuns in it, and not a story about nuns, but nowadays, a convent school wouldn't be like a prison. They would not agree to locking her up against her will. I do wonder if the only reason they dropped the religious aspect into the story was an OST choice.

Anna's actions and behavior seem to be characteristic of someone who didn't have exposure to the outside world. Her emotional growth still remains that of a little girl's. Her only interaction for the past decade was with the nuns; and it was not a normal environment either because she didn't want to stay with them. I feel sympathy for her and don't have the heart to pick on her for not being unable to light the stove.

Anna reminds me of Louie in Shopping King Louie. His maids and butler took care of everything for him since he was a child. He doesn't even know how to wash a plate. It's frustrating to watch as a viewer but thinking from their viewpoint, it's understandable. If you don't do something ever, how are you gonna know how to do it?
And honestly, Anna is much better than Louie in that she can at least try to cook ramen by herself.

But....she hasn't had to be saved so far at all. She IS independent. Well, as independent as a prisoner can be. She has made countless efforts to escape ALL ON HER OWN. She has half succeeded but when you have bloody trained security after you, how long do you think you can last? She is not military trained, unlike alot of the JSS people but she still manages to out smart them and at least make an effort to escape. She has been living in isolation. An 8-year old that was taken prisoner. She never had a normal childhood so the fact that she doesn't know a lot about how the world operates is VERY believable. It makes sense that she is naive in her belief that her dad wants to look for her but can't. Seriously, I don't understand the critque here.

0

and at the same time, the confident girl looked like a bluffed praise since yoo jin get help by jeha almost every ep too,
he saved her by not spreading the rumour,
he saved her from the bike killer,
he saves her from the car crash,
saved her from the building on fire (with umbrella)
work as his personal bodyguard,
and that's from 5 ep, how long that she needs to be saved?
he helped her a lot and we can't call her helpless cause she has a fire glares and can fire people since she his father is so rich,
god forbid getting attracted to someone who is nice and makes her a ramen

ps: if you can see how is this bothering you, then you'll know how your comment bothering people too

0

Nah, @dena and @Curious I actually speaks for majority of kdramas not The K2 in particular.. I'm sorry if my comment offended you, but I actually recalled and noticed how so many Kdramas have portrayed the heroine as pure, angelic, innocent virgin who needs help from the hero, in almost every situation. Anna is portrayed as such (she's fragile, sensitive and has social phobia), and oh a cutie that steals hero's heart.
He still helps her in some way, in Barcelona when she's running away, boiling water and preparing ramyun for her and even checking her every 5 seconds as her bodyguard. And if you see ep 6 you'll see he saves her once again.
My point is, I don't actually criticize Anna as the heroine of this show, I criticize how Korean dramas usually paint heroine as innocent, sweet, and sometimes dumb person. Most of the time the heroine is painted as someone strong and independent but as the show goes on it becomes too easy for them to fall over and needs help from the hero, sometimes becomes meek and weak.

0

@Curious +1

You said what I'd planned on rebutting with rather nicely.

0

@kanz oh thank you for the clarification,
but if the heroine usually gets more help after they met the hero,
it seems like yoo jin's path cause Anna kind of starts as a weak character,

0

Idk...but i think writers tend to start with characters such as anna's so there can be a chance char growth and dev't. A char who struggles from the beginning and rises to the top by the end of the series

0

You do realise that she has been locked up in a convent for...years, right? So no ramyun or fancy kitchens to practice her cooking skills in. Like she has been forced into isolation and pretty sure she didn't have access to tv while at the convent. Yes, she has been watching informercials since she moved to Korea but they don't exactly have tutorials on how to turn gas on. Plus didn't you see that blanket scene? She is not dumb. Just doesn't know her way around a kitchen because thus far in her life she hasn't had to.
But I do agree that Je- Ha's character goes through this complete change but from what we have seen so far, he is a simple man who would have much rather preferred to be left alone until he was dragged into this fight. So her simple pleasures giving him a moment of humanity, at least for me, is very believable.

OMG, so much yes. Thank you so much for typing this.
I haven't been able to understand all the people critiquing Anna's inability to function like someone brought up in a normal home either. She's been shut away for a large part of her life and kept under constant watch, obviously she wouldn't know her way around a modern kitchen. Not to mention, she was in Spain, where ramyeon isn't a staple at all.
There was also one comment that mentioned Anna running worse than Forrest Gump when she was running away from her bodyguards in Spain and I just wanted to say, she ran away from an apparently isolated nunnery because she had to hitch a ride after already running quite a bit down a mountain in her bare feet trying to evade capture. Since she is not a trained marathon runner, I thought the way she ran was quite believable.
Sorry, this kinda turned into a rant, but I couldn't help but get it off my chest. Sorry :)

"Yes, she has been watching informercials since she moved to Korea but they don’t exactly have tutorials on how to turn gas on."

You would be amazed how much you learn from TV. Just based on your drama watching, if you were dropped in Korea right now you'd be shocked at how much you've picked up. And she's not showing any hints of being observationally clever either - she's not watching or processing, in Spain she's running through streets in a nightie and not talking to people when she knows the language!

The character is not written as clever, and the actress is not adding anything to elevate the role.

Required fields are marked *

Sure...if she was watching educational shows or dramas. But she watches informercials. You know, ovee acted ads.
Now i am just wondering where you expect any character growth if she is already able to do everything? What would be the point of having lived isolated in a nunnery if she already knows about modern tech? How would they portray a childhood truama of she isnt trumatised at all by people or flashing lights? She did ask for help remember. Je-Ha tried. And then we found out that her chasers are cops. So she is clever because she knows people cant help her, her only escape is to get as far away as possible. I guess we have different empathies for this chacter and may have to settle on: agree to disagree.

0

There would be a great amount of character growth in watching Anna practically apply things she only knew from observation.

My favorite example of this is Queen In Hyun's Man where Kim Boong Do is an observational badass. You see how he interprets things and then applies them.

Running through the middle of the street in a white nightgown is not smart, it's attention-grabbing, and if she gathered a crowd and asked for help that would make sense but that's not what she does. She doesn't seem to PLAN. It's frustrating.

As for infomercials, they're surprisingly informative, especially about functioning kitchens. We can disagree, that's fine - but the root of my frustration with this writer and character is that things have not been realistically thought through. So the character we end up with is representative, not real.

Yoo-Jin is the BEST kdrama villian ever. Like ever. I really shouldn't like her especially after what we learn about her past deeds in episode 6 but GAAASH she is so awesome. Now it makes sense why she has so many loyal employees despite her tendency to be...ah evil. Yoo-Jin's secretary is totally in awe of her and now I understand why. I am not saying I have a crush on Yoo-Jin but I have a crush on Yoo-Jin. Cold, ruthless, manipulative, resentful with a pinch of vulnerability.

It seems so uncharacteristic of him to jump around after finding her on the cctv. That's pretty juvenile for a brooding hero.

To claim tt Anna is independent as some of the beanies have suggested, one must also take into account the circumstances Anna and Yoo Jin is dealing with.

IMO, just bec he is a mercenary soldier does not mean he cant have a crush on "docile, fragile, submissive women" it's a matter of personal preference.

0

This is true, you can't really judge other people's preferences. Although after watching episode 6, his love interest does seem to have the mental capacity and behaviour of a child which is...somewhat concerning.

0

This is really weird reasoning. I mean, what does military training have to do with preference? Are you really implying that preference changes based on occupation? How head-strong was Rania? She was a sweet and pure woman, although given she worked in a men-dominated job, but Je-Ha was in love with her as well. Anna has been out-smarting and escaping largely trained MEN on her own. (At this point I am refusing to ackowlege Mi-Ran. It just doesn't make sense she is still employed given her incompetency despite the importance of her task). So how is Anna not strong? Seriously, she is constantly trying to out-do her captors without a soul on her side. She has been alone with no friend for so many years and she still manages to hold onto her strength. I am genuinely struggling to grasp this critque of her. I mean I was actually expecting her to struggle more when speaking with people given her social-phobia but she seems to have been portrayed stronger than expected. The only conclusion I come up with is that may be you just haven't seen episode 6 yet.

Let me chime in...

First of all, Anna isn't physically strong but her will is. She's both mentally and emotionally unstable so her actions are dictated by her own circumstances. Take the several attempts she's made escaping the convent, its always been driven by her belief that her dad can save her and that Yoo-jin is the devil herself. Her failed attempts to escape is proof that she's not entirely capable of releasing herself from her captors but her will to see her father makes it possible. Then we also see Anna as an obedient prisoner who patiently waits for her day of freedom. We see both sides of the coin and its just apparent that her character is often stripped and watered down by her own fears. However, if something triggers her senses, she acts upon it and ends up doing something really reckless and spontaneous. That's why she's unstable and bringing Je-ha into the picture doesn't really resolve everything but it paves the way on how he can help her get past her own fears.

Secondly, Je-ha's drawn to Anna because of 3 things. 1. His military training which is ingrained to his core triggers his "hero" instincts. You know, saving a life and all that. 2. Her innocence and her captivity. I would say its more of sympathy than empathy given the circumstances. 3. The loneliness and emptiness they both feel might just be in the same level of sadness.
So there's this urge for Je-ha to help Anna because it still bugs the life out of him that he never did get help her back in Spain.

Lastly, when we talk about the Je-ha/Yoo-jin and Je-ha/Anna pairing, I think its Apples and Oranges. While I have to admit that I prefer any romanticisms involving Je-ha with Yoo-jin because it breaks the cute pattern, there's an obvious lineup that Je-ha ends up with Anna. I can't deny that Anna pales in comparison to how Yoo-jin's character has been strongly set up. It would be hard for Anna's character to achieve the level of maturity and fierceness that Yoo-jin portrays. But I'm just as excited to see how the pieces will fall and who gets the last move and wins the game.

0

I am sorry @Yoyo but you are actually contradicting yourself. Is she "waiting patiently for her days of freedom" or is she "reckless and spontaneous" in her "several attempts" for freedom?

Sure, maybe its his saviour-complex that is drawing him to Anna but its the same saviour-complex that is making him help Yoo-jin as well...so? He has saved Yoo-jin multiple times so far and saved Anna once in Barcelona (well tried his best to). I am just curious as to why people keep expecting Anna's character whose fear of people and triggering effect brought on by flashing lights (which by the way is integral to her character development) to be this strong willed woman despite her never having had the chance to learn that yet. Nobody is denying the badassery of Yoo-jin but her role isn't as a lover to Je-Ha but rather a worthy adversary.
Honestly, I think I am so serious about championing for Anna at this point because I just feel the critique to be baseless and unfair. Comparing her character to Yoo-Jin really is like comparing apples to cars rather than apples to oranges. They have different experiences, different roles, different pain, different motivations, different levels of understanding of the world, different expectations from their father/husband. Comparison makes zero sense.

0

@Curious, I feel like Yoyo just made a good case for why Anna is an interesting character in her own right and is strong in other aspects so I'm *scratching my head* why you seem to disagree with her. O_o

She says that Anna is weak in some aspects and severely crippled by circumstances against her (grew up isolated in a foreign country and guarded almost 24/7 by her enemies.) But the fact that she never lost hope and keeps escaping despite having zero support shows there's an iron will inside that scared clueless girl.

In fact, her will overpowers Yoo-jin's (supposedly) highly organized/systemized attempts to imprison her. She's fighting an army with almost nothing but the fact that she still manages to escape occasionally speaks volumes about how strong her will is.

And the part where Yoyo explains Je-ha's connection to Anna isn't to disparage Anna. She's actually trying to point out why the connection is organic and not just a "OMG why does he even like that girl???"

I hope this clears some stuff up. :| I feel sad when beanies are actually saying the same thing but miss each others points.

0

@curious

You question was: is she waiting patiently for her freedom or is she reckless and spontaneous in her several attempts for freedom?

My answer: As I've mentioned previously, Anna's actions are dictated by her circumstances. If she chances upon an opportunity to escape, she will and that's where she becomes recklessly spontaneous. On the flip side, she stays trapped in her confinement with that sliver of hope that her dad will come and rescue her. So its not being contradicting but rather noting that Anna is an opportunist patiently waiting for a chance at freedom. It's really how she manages to achieve it and when she gets it will probably be a testament on how her character evolves.

The same savior complex you mentioned applies to Yoo-jin. Well in fact, he has saved her more times than he did Anna. And because of those interactions, it created more depth and texture to their relationship. So while Yoo-jin seems to be favoured by many, it is also hinges the acceptance that the likelihood of Yoo-jin finding a romantic interest in Je-ha is close to nil. I just find their relationship having more substance than I do now with Anna since they have yet to fully establish that storyline.

I also want this show to take a different route and break the cute pattern. It would be nice to see Anna go the darker vengeful path and extract revenge at Yoo-jin while Yoo-jin exploits her vulnerability with Je-ha. This show has the potential to explore that side and be a little more different than the usual dramatic flare we've all been used to.

I understand where you're coming from in terms of the critiques but I also hope you see things in this perspective. We all know that Je-ha and Anna ending up together is set in stone, I'm just another hopeful entity wanting something new.

Ah! My bad. We were kind of saying the same thing about Anna. I messed up. I am so sorry @Yoyo.
Still I would much rather nothing romantic happens between Yoo-Jin and Je-ha. She is too badass and too ambitious and I want her to remain that way and not become all reliant on Je-Ha to come save her all the time. She survived in that croc infested pond before he came along and i just feel it would be a disservice to her to have her become someone who needs him.
Again my apologies, i just kept reading so many negative things about Anna (that really dont make sense) and my girl-power instincts kicked in lol i promise usually I can read and comprehend. I just feel that often females are critqued much hasher here than their male counterparts.

And agree, the show has a chance to take Anna to a much darker place so hopefully the cute (but cringy) scenes at the moment are building her up as innocent to make her turn to the dark side more dramatic. Hopefully.

Maybe it's just me, but it feels like watching two shows:
-- the first half of the episode is like an action thriller, "The Bodyguard", with K2 and Madam as the OTP
-- and the second half is like a rom-com kdrama, "Ramyun Secret Lovers", with Bong-Soo... no, I meant Je-Ha, and Anna as the OTP , waiting to adopt a little kitty soon.

Can't wait for the storyline involving Anna...

Yes, this. The tone switches wildly for all these shows packed into one... it's a hot mess, but our villain is just too compelling, and I think our girl in the attic is going to become more interesting. (I hope so, though I'm enjoying Dances with Ramen despite my better judgment. ) I was trying to explain to my spouse why I keep watching and it does boil down to Song Yoona. Though that hallway at the end gave me real Bond vibes. Is Yoo Jin really Goldfinger?

I'm torn between two OTPs because the two set of pairs give different vibes and feelings.
Je Ha and Yoo Jin is like in their own revenge melodrama & bodyguard action thriller.. The looks Yoo Jin gives to Je Ha.. oh gosh!! She's falling deeper for him. And I don't know how I'm gonna rooting for them.. I'd love to see Se Joon's reactions if he knows his wife has some feelings for her bodyguard.

Je Ha and Anna.. probably they're shooting "Secret Ramyun Affair" or "Flower Boy Ramyun Lovers"... They're so so cuteeee.. even with minimal interactions between them and so far only via CCTV and first meeting in Barcelona.

If it was an american show they would have torn each other's clothes by now. We would have him supporting her against all the odds and by the time the half-way mark rolled in, his blinders would be off. He would realise that not only she is a control freak but has done beyond terrible things and then they would turn into worthy foes trying to outwit each other ....

except this is a kdrama and we are stuck with ramen dance for romance .. urghhh ...

ME. The massive amount of chemistry in just ONE look shared between them is insane. This episode was going so well in the first half. The trap Yoojin falls into and the "wolf" who knew her well enough to know, implicitly, when she needed him. The scene when he opened the umbrella for her and they just stared at each other, holy crap, that's how you do chemistry folks! It was raining down on them but that room was ON FIRE ya feel. Her inner monologue as they walked down that hall was superbly acted by Song Yoona. Her expression was blank, but the emotion in her "voice"/thoughts and in her eyes, ugh just wipe the floor with me already. Her delivery of the "How dangerous" line, just wow. My heart soared and broke at the same time. And then, as if I wasn't already an ugly mess on the floor..."Straighten your back." THE WAY SHE COMPLETELY FROZE. And the way he GETS IT, he gets HER, he understands the position she is, how she's constantly targeted, constantly watched by her enemies for any sign of weakness, any opening for attack. He knows and he's taken it upon himself to watch her back. How can anyone not ship this after these scenes??

Anyway, then the second half of the drama happened and I went from drama heaven in which the writers and actors were giving me everything I wanted and more, to drama WTF land in which I had to actually force myself to watch unfunny filler material/characters that I couldn't care less for. And, to top it all off, another ramen scene that was, incredibly, ten times more cringe than the first one. Not only that, but Jeha's enthusiasm was so over the top and just not believable at all. Are these really the same writers of the first half the episode?? It didn't even feel like the same character/drama, and it was all just so frustratingly inconsistent, both characterization-wise and tone-wise. I'm upset, frankly. I love love love love everything Yoojin-related and Yoojin-Jeha is giving me so much life. But apparently I can't trust the writing/characterization.

@El +10000

My thoughts exactly! It felt really disconnected.. and those attempts at comedy were rather annoying! I did not like one bit those scenes of the JSS personnel, Mi Ran (I cannot describe how annoyed I am at her character), I mean all of them. It was believed that JSS was a serious company with competent personnel, but it really does not seem so at all. I really do not understand what the writers were aiming for. with those attempts at "comedic relief" I feel like K2 would be an awesome action-thriller-romance if the writers would just stick to the first part as you explained it. Anna and JeHa: not believable at all so far.

That water dousing scene was awesome. The best scene of all 5 episodes and 2nd best scene is another monologue of Yoo-Jin after the Car Fight.

Je-Ha's reactions in 2nd half were exaggerated but still made some sense.

3rd People are missing that Yoo Jin has done many terrible things too.

The most interesting people are Yoo Jin and Je Ha and Mr. Park from opposition. That husband is despicable. Whenever he shows up i want to punch him.

I also feel That Chief of JSS and That Lesbian female secretary can betray or go against Yoo Jin in future.

I for one realise that YJ has and will do terrible things, but that in noway negates the very real chemistry she shares with JH, it is palpable. I agree with another poster it is like they have two simultaneous stories going on, one very intense the second lighter but grating because it seems to take the lead down the rabbit hole. He's cool and in control the first part then he's hyper excited about watching s/o cook ramen... not working. Anyway I'll enjoy the scenes I like and skip the other ones, back to the rain scene spot on it rocked.

One more ramyun scene and I will drop this drama like a hot potato.....

.... that I don't think I can do it because I love Yoo Jin so much. I love to see what her story is and where it is going. I love to see the sizzling chemistry between her and Jeha.

Just please cut down the whole "Anna is so pure an innocent, we all need to root for her" things. It's not cute, not heart fluttering, definitely did not add up anything to the story. If anything those scenes completely left me wandered about Jeha's character. He's so uncharacteristically become a fool who exaggerate her acting everytime Anna is around. A silent and small smile would be enough.

K2 is like two drama forced to be combined. One is a mature badass scene and the other is fluffy cringey antics.

My dilemma as well! I'm a sucker for noona romances too... Well you know I Hear Your Voice and 49 Days (Scheduler's camp) are two of my favorite dramas so I won't mind seeing a full on noona romance here.
It also proves Ji Chang Wook has better chemistry with older women/noona than otherwise. Ha Ji Won, Wang Ji Hye, Oh Ji Eun & Park Jung Ah (Smile Donghae), and Park Min Young, not to mention the actresses who play his mothers like Chae Si Ra and Do Ji Won, he's on fire with every one of them!

It's crazy, but I ship him with Song Yoona, eventhough I feel JCW and Yoona is cute together. With Song Yoona it's all SPARKS AND FIRE!!!! And I want them to have more time together!

That's a good point. I already loved JCW's chemistry with Ha Ji Won to pieces. He does it so well, maybe it is because he looks so vulnerable, and liking an awesome noona is like desiring something that might be out of your reach, she will not be easy to impress...
yep, definitely I want to see him in more noona romances. :D

Talking about the K2, I am feeling the frustration. I want the show to focus in the awesome pair Yoo Jin - Je Ha. I would love to see some tormented romance even knowing that it will not end well, but damn, that would make an awesome watch. Anyway, even without romance, the relation between these two is the best part of the show by far, so I would not mind to focus on more thrills and machinations, as long as these two are bound together.
Regarding Anna, as much as I like Yoona, her character disappearing could be a good thing for the show. It's not bringing anything good so far, except for playing an empty love interest (and we already have a better alternative). Moreover, all her scenes are simply over the top and cringy. It's not her fault but the writers I guess, but it's going to ruin the show's potential.

And here I am, I hate noona romances, still shipping JCW with SYA. Really, noona romances are not my thing, and I especially avoid them. But I watch K2 just for their chemistry. Their chemistry is off the charts.

The lack of interaction between Anna and JCW is not really helping either. Could've ship for them if they could at least speak with each other. So far, their only interaction is this weird ramyun scenes, which make me cringe only.

0

Required fields are marked *

I totally ship JCW & SYA, too! They really have amazing chemistry!

I'm just jumping right in here, haven't read all the K2 posts, so forgive me if I'm repeating what others have already said...

[1] I LOVE how SYA and IY are two sides of the same coin. Both of them have deep, unmet longings for protection and love - and interestingly, both betrayed by the same man (although, one as a wife, the other as a daughter). The only real difference between SYA and IY is that SYA has a lot of power, and has played Game of Thrones for longer than IY.

[2] I am seriously in awe of how well SYA acts her all-powerful fearsome side, but then lets the "mask" crack and shows us just how wounded, alone, lonely, and powerless she really feels. If she were as heartless as people around her things she is, she wouldn't cry at her father's mistress' words; she wouldn't be stiff when the photographers asked for a lovey-dovey shot of her and her husband. She would have just stoically done the shot. But, it touched her deepest longing to be loved by her husband - it hit too close to home.

[3] I think it's suffice to say that SYA and JCW's characters are being written with a certain amount of ambiguity. We don't expect them to be romantic. She is his employer, he is a reluctant, but terribly effective bodyguard. But, there's already so many layers to their relationship.

ENEMIES: When they turn on each other, that spells danger; but when they are in-sync with each other: that spells danger (but for their enemies)!

LOVERS?: If this were a powerful chaebol woman JCW's age, we would already be calling out the wedding bans. He offers the protection that SYA longs for from her husband. The umbrella, the hand on the back (notice the position, not high: between the shoulder blades, but low, by the small of her back): it's a lover's touch.

MASTER/SLAVE: It's obvious that SYA would feel more comfortable having control over everyone in her employ. And she tries to do this with JCW, like she does everyone. Yet, I think we would all agree that there's a certain amount peace and relief (however uncomfortable) she feels when she realizes her "hunter dog" is actually a "wolf." Dangerous, true - but oddly reliable to get the job done. I always feel like SYA is holding up the entire sky with her bare heads, and JCW gives her a moment's reprieve.

COMRADES: But, JCW isn't portrayed consistently as a lover, a father, a son, not even a subordinate.....but an equal, just in a different guise. They are in some ways: soulmates. They understand each other, which is the revelation SYA comes to after the will-reading scene.

I like watching them interact the most. :)

Thoughts:

1. The female bodyguard, aka J4, is still annoying. Can't stand her character.

2. They need to bring Anna's character to life more. I am not emotionally invested in her at all. They had me a bit during the first episode, but they left that momentum in the dust. At this point she is just a depressed damsel in distress who craves ramen.

3. Je-ha was REALLY happy she ate ramen.

4. Song Yoon-ah is the life of this show. She is killing it! Yoo-jin is such a complex character! She started off as a purely evil character, and now she has all these varying motivations and layers that really help to make me sympathize more with her. I am kinda rooting for her over her husband. The situation is totally reversed from that of the beginning, where I was cheering for dad.

5. The chemistry between JCW and SYA is off the charts. Is there anyone else out there that thinks the romance should be between these two instead of with the daughter? That scene with the umbrella? There seemed to be some serious sexual tension going on (or is it just me?) Will this be some sort of perverted second lead syndrome destined never to come true? Even though I guess she is first lead since her name does come before Yoona.

6. Kitty!!! This show needs to stop with the kittens, I can't handle the cuteness overload.

7. I somehow imagine Cloud Nine to be some sort of Tron-esque club. The elevators open to Daft Punk playing and bodies writhing to the beat, basically a giant orgy. Weird huh. Hahaha. My imagination left to its own devices apparently goes crazy.

5. You are not the only one. Wait for the comments to pour in and many of us are wishing for a noona romance. And in all fairness, i think the production is hinting at something if only from her end given how SYA was staring at him.

Though not preproduced, i think they must have shot 4-5 episodes in advance so they didn't introduce this "attraction" based on audience feedback. It was already in the script.

The umbrella scene is just great. I love everything about YJ and JH. Both actors are killing it with their roles. It's like they own it and love every interaction between the two.

Anna is really coming into it and excited to see the development progress (which looks like Episode 6 will do that). She has something there and want learn more. I really enjoy JH concern, and love his stalkingness.

It has really been a fun watch, and hope the writers do not screw this up. It has a lot of potential to be really great as all the pieces are there.

First, let me get this off my chest: I cringedd!! That ramyun-scene. My oh my! It s been a while since I cringed so hard during a K-drama cheesy scene..

Anyway, moving on. I actually think we got some more info from this episode. First, we can now see clearer that Se-joon doesnt care about protecting YJ under any circumstance, she is more like his rival than his alliance. And he will go to any side that can help him to be the president. This make me disgust the man more. Second, we can understand more YJ's emotion, especially regarding her lonely and childless life. I feel sympathy for her, and I wonder if she is really portrayed as villain? The chemistry between JCW and SYA becomes stronger and stronger, and I love it!

I looked at the timer .. the whole ramen scene is over 6 minutes long. 6 minutes!! 6 minutes of Anna spazzing over ramen and dancing and JH staring at her stupidly pleased that she ate it. Which production person decided that this is "cute"

As for anna, everytime she appears onscreen the whole momentum of the story is lost. All the tension disappears. She is just tiring.

And what is with her inconsistent writing - she knows how to deceive thermal monitors but doesn't know how to turn on the stove valve or read the instructions on the packet on how much water to put. What are you doing show?

btw, did anyone notice the line that JH thinks - That "she is too ambitious to sell out her shares"

I thought that was amazing. Because we usually confuse ambition with plain greed.

The fact the JH recognises that its not the money she craves, its not money she is after. He is figuring her out ... And she is figuring him out with her wolf commentary

Yoo-jin is a flat out control freak. She's a well calculated person and a villainous strategist which is both her strength and weakness. She doesn't enjoy failing neither does she enjoy being ridiculed and doubted. And this is why Je-ha compliments her because he's not one to be tied down by rules and principles. He's a wolf that can't be tamed and Yoo-jin should use this to her advantage. Don't tame the wolf but feed it so its loyalty remains with you.

I still like the show,
and I hope they'll have at least 1 fighting scene each episode, it doesn't have to be the main character,
this genre is action and you have bodyguard company, you have to fight,
the plot is complicated and I believe whatever they said,

it surely fascinating that yoo jin is great but she always treats everything with power since she has a lot of it,
then we have Anna that silently think a lot, she literally disguised her sleep with the electric blanket just to climb the roof,
and jeha reaction towards both of them is different, it hard for me to see that jeha likes yoo jin cause all I see is yoojin loved him, he cares about him and yoo jin has burning passion towards him, the shot like to highlight that.
Then with Anna, he cares about her because he just does. It's the classic falling in love but not that unbelievable, why? because he reacted to whatever she does without her asking it, without words he cares about her,
we don't know if Anna cares, she doesn't know anything about him to fall in loves,

so my point is
1) they need to keep action going and better at storytelling
2a) Yoo-jin gives jeha the mature adult fall in love gaze, so we want the passion to execute
2b) Jeha gives the young romance reaction to Anna (why romance? he is anticipating her and he likes he want to know what she thought
2c) Anna still doesn't have feelings for Jeha, she didn't have any interaction and why would she get close to him either?

chemistry is unique things when everything works well and grounded but since everybody also includes OTP in the comment, I still can't see the romance between Yoo Jin and Je Ha, I see passion and chemistry with the intense acting but I still don't think Jeha likes her romantically

I don't think she likes him romantically, but I think she appreciates that he seems to anticipate her needs even with out being told. He is a wolf, but she's true warrior also much like him. They are both two really strong individuals I would say both have alpha tendencies which makes the possibility of a pairing between them so tempting to see. However, I may not want them to be paired romantically if it mean either loose the edge that drew me in which is their very strong personalities. I just like to see a little more of them in scenes. Frankly if he and Anna don't get involved romantically would also be a good thing, I don''t see it and don't want to see especially if the pairing is anything like the ramen scene.

From the comments here and on tumblr, the response to the Anna/Je-ha relationship seems to be divided on gender lines. I think the leading couple have been designed to appeal more to a male audience, after all it's an action drama and Yoona has many a fanboy. Like the ramyeon dance in clearly fan service right?

I feel like i'm gaining a fascinating insight into what a escapism fantasy romance looks like for guys, meanwhile half the female audience is dying over the potential of Yoo-jin/Je-ha.

I think the Ramyun is Ads,
they didn't blur the logo , perfectly have inside the plastic and I assume everyone would know the brand is,
isn't that Samyang Ramyun?

and I also saw the different between the shipper things,
I need to ask some of my the friends who watched it later and I probably cater to male point of view based on your comment (whaat?),

I see the passion in acting but I also noticed that Je ha doesn't like Yoo Jin that way so I am going with Je Ha's way cause attraction and care will shape the relationship
besides, Anna hasn't meet Jeha or even knowing him,
she just knew that he is that guy who is there, I am not gonna looking for chemistry or even romantic chemistry when they have no scene, but Jeha seems attracted to her,

Well, I must be one of the outliers then because I am a female fan who does not ship Yoo Jin and Je Ha. She might have the hots for him, but I don't see any interest along those lines from him.

It's more than just the shipping between Yoo Jin and Je Ha though. It's Mi-ran who seems to just exist to flirt or throw herself at men, Anna being styled in a white nightie to maintain an angelic pure persona and even Je-ha voyeuristically falling in love with her over the cameras parallels the behaviour of fans.

I think K2 is an escapism fantasy for guys. I don't take any issue with this, because the majority of kdramas cater towards the female gaze and this is simply the same for a male audience.

yoo-jin is a fascinating character, and despite what it might say about my own, i find i'm able to relate to her and her emotions. if i gave up my family and inheritance to marry a man who ended up betraying me, then yeah i'd want to make him pay hell too. song yoon-ah is doing great stuff with her role. and when she and ji chang-wook are together, there's SO MUCH CHEMISTRY. not necessarily of the romantic kind, but they just sizzle together.

i could really do without the comic relief characters, like the doctor and the martial arts instructor and most of all, mi-ran, who is obnoxious and loud and disgusting (even more so after watching episode 6). i just really intensely dislike the actress, because i recognize that the character might be funny in a different actress' hands. but in this one's, i just want her to never act in front of me again.

Ugh.. i agree with the folks about the uselessness of the ramen scene. Song Yoon Ah and Ji Chang Wook are the ones to watch for me - their chemistry, whether intentional or by chance, is what makes this drama worth watching.
Tbh, could care less about the other Yoona/Anna. Her scenes are pure filler to me and I'm not expecting that to change even if they flesh out her character more. Not sure if its due to not being all that wowed by Yoon's acting or if it's because the comparison is even more glaring when compared to the powerhouse that is SYA (and to slightly lesser extent JCW).
But i shall keep watching to see where they go from here... Ramen and kittens and all.

The problem is probably the insufficient character development for Anna all round. Joy over ramyeon does not further enlightenment on her personality. Besides being kind to animals (which I gather we are to take to mean = being a nice person?), there is nothing revealed about her to help us relate to her more and to care. The problem seems to be more with the writing than the actress ie, if she is given more material to work with, then only we can tell. :)

Thanks @ gummimochi. You did another great job of a blow-by-blow on the fight scene (I realise that for a change we got just one!) and helped my understanding of that plot against Yoo Jin.

I find Yoo Jin compelling because she is not just a villain but a victim too and Song Yoon Ah gets me feeling more for her than for any villain I've come across. I'm practically rooting for her even more than for Anna to develop and become a better person and to have a happy life (without ruining the lives of others in the process).

I see the character of Han Yeo Jin of Yong Pal, split into two for The K2. Her ruthlessness in Yoo Jin and her helplessness in Anna. Both women though are victims in some way, determined and lonely. Pity they cannot become friends!

It's ironic that it will be the same man who will probably 'save' them both. Whatever triangle it is, it's a very definite triangle already in place whether the characters know it or not, and it should be the main cause for much resourcefulness of the non-fighting kind for Je Ha.

I honestly blame the execution of the ramen scene as to why it didn't sit well with most people. It wasn't supposed to represent some ramen ad or anna acting borderline lunatic but rather pity towards Anna for not being able to enjoy the simple pleasures of life because of being locked away which is why she was smiling so much.

the execution of this scene was so over exaggerated that even i cringed a bit though i did like the meaning of the scene.

adding on, if they made the scene a bit more subtle with her smiling a bit (not dancing around so much) and Jeha wasn't acting SO happy then it could've been a really sweet scene. That saying i'm probably one of the minority that doesn't really HATE the scene so much.

The ramen scene was cute but then they had to make jeha overdo it so bad. Tbh that much excitement over feeding someone ramen feels likes he's guiding a little kid and if that's the dynamic they r going for then ugh.

Yoo-Jin is the BEST kdrama villian ever. Like ever. I really shouldn’t like her especially after what we learn about her past deeds in episode 6 but GAAASH she is so awesome. Now it makes sense why she has so many loyal employees despite her tendency to be…ah evil. Yoo-Jin’s secretary is totally in awe of her and now I understand why. I am not saying I have a crush on Yoo-Jin but I have a crush on Yoo-Jin. Cold, ruthless, manipulative, resentful with a pinch of vulnerability.

I generally like this drama (it's a shame it's not better with all the money they are putting in to it), but I still can't wrap my head around Je ha's character.

I understand the motivations and decisions of very character besides his. Why does he go through so much trouble to help out Yoo-jin? She almost murdered him an episode or 2 ago. He acts like an ass to his superiors and then a completely different person to Anna and Yoo-jin. Why did he like Anna so quickly? The personality change apathetic to bumbly is so fast I'm getting whiplash. Is this some hero complex he has because he couldn't save past love? I don't know I just don't get it or the writing is a bit sloppy, but can we get the write who works with Yoo-jin's character to fix up Je ha's?

Also, is it me or is it low-key creepy how Je ha spies and meddles in Anna's life? I understand that it is supposed to be romantic (which it is) but it's a little scary to see him just always watching her, and then taking an active part to help her out to make himself feel better (and her but nonetheless). I guess it's just another moment where people (ahem men) seem sparkly and heroic in kdrama's, but would come off hella creepy in real life.

We get glimpses that Je-ha can act nice towardss others too, like when he helped Master Song woo the doctor, but I agree his motivations for helping Yoo Jin are not entirely clear ( is it just to help her get in power at the Blue House and fullfil his revenge or something more?)

And the changes in his behaviour can be over the top like in the ramyun scene.

Probably this is some sort of dramas that's directed by 2 totally different directors, no?
The first 45 minutes is The K2, but the last 15 minutes is "Let's Eat" drama with ramyun as the star.. Might as well invite Doo Joon and Lee Soo Kyung/Seo Hyun Jin to cameo and properly introduce "how to cook and eat delicious ramyun 101". Hehehe
It's absurd scene, I know. So let's just accept ramyun is their biggest PPL contributor and somehow the writer need to show Anna has some life and PDs need Yoona for the ratings (ramyun scene got the highest rating for ep 5).

Eh, I don't really get the hate towards Anna. Her character is believable, for me at least.

I mean, she was locked up for almost all of her life, but she is independent, tried to escape so many times on her own, quite smart (the electric blanket and cctv scenes), but honestly, how far can you go with all the military trained guys watching you 24-7?

As for the ramyun scene, it does not frustrate me at all. Maybe due to my sister; she doesn't know how to turn on the gas as well because she never step foot in the kitchen. Haha

Finally, I don't know, but I think, just because we love badass female characters, let's not forget that characters like Anna do exist as well.

Peace, everybody. Heh.

Well I don't hate Anna, I simply dislike the over-the-top ramyun scenes. Well, I dislike every OTT and unnecessarily long scenes in the drama, not only ramyun scenes.

I think it's simply because Anna's character hasn't fully developed yet. We know a bit about Jang Se Joon who loves women and getting on her wife's nerves. We even know about his political rival and the parties. We know much more about Yoo Jin that we even know her family and relatives and her stance on inheritance/shares and power. But we don't know much about Je Ha's backstory, other than the one in Middle East, and about Anna's backstory and character because she has less screentime than everyone else.
She does seem like a naive young girl whose mind is set to meet her father. She's having social phobia and lives like a night owl, only active at night. And she likes RAMYUN.. What else? If the writer actually actively incorporate her in the plot, like yeah some interactions with her father and step-mother or everyone else, we might be able to better understand her character, motivation, her trauma, her own guilt, how she would overcome this, her relationship with Je Ha, etc.

It suddenly occurred to me to wonder if the Je Ha ramyeon dance when he's watching Anna, is a parallel to how Healer's Ahjumma danced by herself in her little lair. Whereas the latter was cute, the former smacks of voyeurism and inexplicable, unmitigated enthusiasm.

Nevertheless, I guess it's a heavy-handed way to say that Je Ha and Anna are alike in childlikeness (and love for kittens), and that they can share the little joys of life as 2 deprived people might, and that they therefore should end up together?

I've been enjoying this drama do much that I was hoping for no ship wars... It's sad that it has already slowly begun...

1. Not knowing how to turn on the gas valve happens a lot to many people. It took me a while to figure out that my roommate used to turn off the gas valve to prevent it from leaking at night. It's also a new place for Anna so keep that in mind that she may not be used to the kitchen.

2. She's not the one who bought the clothes she's wearing. And wearing white everyday is not such a bad thing. 90% of the time she barely leaves the house. Let het wear what she's comfortable with.

I feel like there's a certain amount of bias against Anna because people are loving YJ. She's not ambitious, but she's not weak either. She's crying because she's still grieving about a traumatic event. It feels like there's a specific criteria for 'strength' for a lot of people. The woman who is rising against all odds for power is strong but a girl wearing white always and dances when cooking is a one-dimensional damsel in distress who only exists so the hero can save her.

Je-Ha is definitely not in love with anybody, but it's clear that he's attracted to Anna; not because she's innocent, but there's a sense of understanding - He was on the run for so long that he stands apart from everyone else, she's been hidden for so long she may not understand the ways of the world. So he's making it easier for her in little gestures and he's enjoying seeing her respond in her own ways.

Girls can be shy, outspoken, girly, boyish, angry, rude, nice, kind or anything in between if they want to. All girls are different so stop pushing this shitty "strong independent woman" crap down our throats when given Anna's situation i doubt none of us would be.

sometimes it quite uncomfortable to me when I don't think some even is that offensive and the comment is full of its.
A little happiness is okay and can be silly but not worth of the hate,
there's also this topic that "strong woman is a woman who can do what a man can" that doesn't sit that well with me, there's something more on the equation than just being badass,
I don't see how someone strength needs to be validated by gender's role, if they did a good job then they did a good job. A good wife who only cooking and cleaning is still a strong woman on her own, even if she'll always get help by her husband during big work,
or bossy woman is strong because people afraid of them while the quiet woman on her job is weakest than the boss, what if the quiet woman crafted a good house model in her house and have a few property? still weak because we only knew her as the ordinary worker who didn't make problem,

it also shocking that Anna with little screen time gets so much criticism. As a character, she hasn't had that much of screen time to judge and she didn't make any problem to gets hated,

Peoples reaction to Annas story line like they have zero sense of comprehension. It's obvious why Anna is the way she is, she is honestly the easiest character to understand. All her actions in this drama so far were desperate attempts to escape her imprisonment, find her father and get her freedom. And honestly Yoona is acting her character perfectly well. Yoo Jin and Anna are supposed to be opposite sides of the spectrum, like Evil Queen and Snow White, and the writer clearly points that out every episode. I don't know how dumb or purposely oblivious you have to be to not see it.

Mmmm, I would say that "ship wars" is a bit exaggerated for what happens here. :)

I agree with you that Je Ha feels sympathy for Anna but it does not feel enough, I wish their relationship would be more fleshed out if they intend us to root for them as a couple. It is not hating her to say that her character is not well portrayed and it is only shown doing weird things. Therefore it is natural that people want more of the thing that the show is doing well, which is the believable and intense interactions between Yoo Jin and Je Ha. Why should we want a different thing? It's all about personal taste and I understand that Yoo Jin-Je Ha couple right now is far more compelling. And this does not mean I even want a romance at all (ok, I would not mind if they implied some sexual tension at least); there are many types of onscreen chemistry that make a show worth watching.
The truth is I was checking this also because of Yoona and was looking forward to the romance. Sadly the execution ended being like this and I ended wishing for more time together of the couple that sets the screen on fire, which is the other one...

Thank you. What is turning me off actually is the shipping war that is happening. SYA is doing an amazing job so far as a villain but Yoona is not as bad as an actress as many are portraying her to be.

While Anna is the "damsel in the distress", it is actually Yoo Jin , the strong female villain, who is being rescued a lot by Je Ha since the second episode.

DoubleFault, you make a good point. When our hero first meets the damsel in distress he does not save her, not once but twice. Yet, the villianess is saved countless times. Traditionally when I see this on my screen I think couple, when hero saves said woman from death or near death. But now the writer wants me to believe a woman the Anna the hero ignored has touched his heart, really. The reason I don't buy it is really the times they shared on screen initially made me not even consider them a possibility since he ignored her. Where a woman who threatened the lives of innocents, and his included he's willing to put his life on the line for. It is all visual, maybe not romantic but if it was a romance the woman he saves is the woman he wants whether he verbalizes it or not actions speak for themselves, eh he'll probably end up with Anna, but he has amazing on screen chemistry with the Villianess Extraordinaire love her.

YES!! I hope everyone sees your comment. Geez, females (especially idol-actress) are always torn down so much harsher than their male counterparts. People keep comparing Anna to Yoo-Jin as if they have shared experiences and/or ambitions. No! Comparing them is like comparing apples to cars not apples to oranges. Greed for power and desire to have it all is driving Yoo-Jin while Anna just wants to return to simpler times where her father looked after her and loved her.
There are infinity ways to be strong and being ruthless enough to rob a child of their childhood to achieve your goals is just one of them. Yoo-Jin kicks ass but so far she has been the damsel in distress, not Anna.

For some reason, me channeling my 16 year old self is not working on this show; and that's probably why I'm so drawn towards Yoo-jin and Je-ha because they're not fluffy cute at all! Their pairing is just so emotionally matured that there really isn't a need for me to channel my teenage self to appreciate any romanticisms.

They exude a very convincing and relatable chemistry that's un palpable and easy on the eyes. The complicated storyline allows them to show a different type of compatibility, one that's actually fueled by ambition and driven by principles.

There's so much contrast in how and why this pairing works. Both show vulnerability and minimal dependency with room for reliability and compassion. They compliment each other with their own sets of flaws while trying to mask it at the same time. Their inability to speak their emotions but their carelessness in speaking their minds is another reason why this pair is so interesting. One doesn't need to play the hero because they're capable of helping each one out. It's Bonnie and Clyde with unlimited manpower and ammo but what makes the Yoo-jin and Je-ha relationship special is that invincible connection they have. They're on opposite poles but the attraction is visibly there and it's strong.

So why I would I settle for my usual ramyun goodness when I can order up a spicy flavored one and even make it extra spicy for my liking?

Personally, I love female characters like Seo Eun-Gi played by Moon Chae Won in Innocent Man. Strong, independent and yet, there is a palpable sense of vulnerability if one looks closely. I see that in Yoo Jin.

These type of female characters are hard to come by in K-dramaland.

wow I can't believe some of the comments here.
I don't even feel the urge to explain this show's characters actions or defend them cause some people here can't seem to get rid of their prejudice against some actors

some people are reacting to one scene without thinking about the overall situation. I guess some people don't understand how to enjoy simple pleasure in life. I guess they want a monotonous show although I have to say the transition between scenes is jarring.

Anna acting like a child well that should not happen because when you reach a certain age you are not allowed to act like a child at all especially a person who has been held captive and isolated for .

What about Je Ha then for a super elite black op agent he can't control his facial expression and reacts like a petulant child.

Yoojin is a person with cold personality so she is expressionless most of the time and crying/showing fear or smiling sarcastically intermittently. I do think her styling - makeup and way she is dressed is helping her a lot (she's my favorite in this show and her acting is better than other but come on there are better actors out there)

I do think Yoo jin has a personality disorder she is either a Psychopath or Sociopath.

I am liking the competitor assembly man, that actor is playing the character well and I guess his character is an ass and he is not pretending otherwise. (Cracks me up)

well I said i won't defend anyone but I guess I just did, I realize my opinion doesn't matter but this show is getting boring, hopefully story moves along its at 6th episode already.

for reference I am fan of Ji chang wook and favorite character in show is Yoo jin, curious about Anna's character.
I am not fan of Yoona but I don't dislike her either and feel if actors are already part of the show they should be given chance to prove themselves (it's not like me complaining will affect the casting) and I think Yoona is doing a good job so far with what she'sgiven (she doesn't have enough screen time for me to say otherwise)

"Anna acting like a child well that should not happen because when you reach a certain age you are not allowed to act like a child at all especially a person who has been held captive and isolated for ."

To be fair, I'm against the infantilising of grown adults in general. I get that some people find helplessness, incompetence and naivety romantically appealing but it just doesn't really resonate with me. I find aegyo baffling in both men and women. I look at characters like Louis in Shopping King and Eun in Moon Lovers, and I feel so bad for their partners, I'm just like why would you volunteer to be someone's mother.

Well, I think anna never really got to be a child. So, even if she has grown up, she doesn't know how to be an adult because she didn't get the chance to become emotionally mature. For her, there is no difference between being an adult or a child. So, I don't think she is acting like a child, she probably still feels like one.

She never got the chance to be her father's child. That's one heavy excess baggage that both Anna and her father carries around as if it were Tictacs in your pocket.

Whenever SYA and JCW are on screen it's like the temperature goes up a notch. The look they give each other, and their body language. OMG. It is sex on fire.

Really hope this turns out to be a noona romance because the Anna scenes are really dull and I'm just not feeling anything between her and JCW.

Yoo-Jin on the other hand...

I want more of Anna. Isn't she the heroine of this story? I feel like she's being shortchanged here. Still, I like this show and am looking forward to the next episode.

I read somewhere that Yoona said her character would have limited screen time at first and she was understanding of it, hence the reason she is not seen so much at first.

I sometimes dont like how Choi Yoona acts. Her way of talking is so slow, which is most suited for historical/saeguk dramas. However, her some scenes are good, like in this episode, where the sprinkles turn off and she just sits there and how she walked past the family with her head held high. Her acting sometimes turn me off, and sometimes is on point. I dont know whether its the character, or the direction or the actress acting. I have not watched any of her previous dramas though,

YooNa has surprised me in this drama, She has improved a lot , compared to her previous horrible acting in her other dramas.

I love that Je-Ha has both chemistry with Yoo Jin and Anna. A very seductive or sensual chemistry with Yoo jin, and an innocent sweet chemistry with Anna.

Finally, we come across a bodyguard who has a cheesy side too, and still exist in him. Unlike some dramas, where the guy who goes rogue before, would be cheesy, and the next minute he just turns in for revenge, would not have an ounce of cheesiness in him, until very much later on.

Sorry for the wrong name. Its Song Yoona. Not Choi Yoona.

This drama gives me mixed feelings. I think the writing is kinda bad yet I find it a compelling watch. Song Yoon-ah continues to be such a complex villain and I like her interactions with JCW due to their chemistry, almost to the point where that's the drama I'd like this to be, focusing on those two.

So while I like the little plot we see I feel there's one too many filler scenes especially this episode or ridiculous scenes (shower fight last episode, ramyun scene).

While Anna's reaction to the ramyun could make sense I though Je-ha's was inconsistent with what we've seen of him before.

I still like it but this could've been amazing in the hands of a diffrent writer and PD.

It is like watching 2 dramas.

One is where the acting is on another level and is something that you don't see in most dramas, and you just want more.

The other is a romcom where there is no chemistry between the leads and it isn't really that funny or cute.

I don't feel it is the fault of the writer or PD, because why is it so amazing with one couple, but it just misses by a mile with the other couple.

in all fairness, you can't see romcom chemistry when they never met, he only attracted to her, what's so really wrong about it?
his facial expression? he did it great,
her dancing sequence? it's silly but it wasn't on her,
je-ha doesn't have interaction with anna and people already demanding chemistry,
it's really a bizarre double standard

Love this drama... but the side character got too many screen time. I was this close to skip the scene where jeha w helping the bold guy to get his woman.

And why jeha is very nice and caring with anna but act like an asshole with J4???

WHY?

Can't he be a little bit gentleman with the girl. J4 = fangirl = me

Be nice to us please!

I think j4 probably came off too strong for je ha. Its not like he is looking for a romantic relationship. I think as lot people mentioned in the comments Above, he is compassionate towards her because he probably feels sympathetic about her condition.

Ha ha.. I think ji chang wook is nice to his fangirls though ( or that's how he is, in my imagination) ;)

I was troubled by all the negative comments regarding the writer and Yoona even before the drama began. I've neither watched YongPal nor Yoona before. But I'm a JCW fan and I watch this for him, hoping that each episode will be awesome and the ratings great.

So I watch each episode feeling on the edge, praying that it will turn out well. I'm up to speed till ep 6 and I have to say I'm enjoying this drama and looking forward to the next episode. Maybe it helps that I watch dramas to be entertained and I can gloss over plot holes or disjoints as long as they're not too glaring.

Sure there are some scenes that are over-the-top like ramen CCTV 2.0 but otherwise, I pretty much am excited about the storyline, the chemistry and dialogue between JH and YJ and the upcoming romance between JH and Anna.

I have to say that JCW has chemistry with just about anyone as some of you have pointed out. But I get that perhaps the gushy puppy-in-love persona doesn't sit well with most compared to his cool bodyguard persona. Maybe that's why most comments are for JH and YJ vs JH and Anna.

But having watched his screen time with both, I see that the emotions are gonna run deeper with the two ladies and it'll be interesting. Can't wait to watch more...

No most of the people , including Korean audience ,are with Jeha-Anna love line .Only on this comment board there are people delusional enough to believe in Jeha-YJ romantic relationship.

I agree that JCW and SYA have great chemistry but its not a romantic chemistry in any way.

That's good to know. I'm not sure if I can continue watching if anything romantic or sexual happens between JH and YJ. I have no issue with noona romance but if it happens in this drama, the story will become so twisted given the kind of devious character YJ is.

But I'm really liking their cryptic dialogues and how YJ always seem to inspire the killer instinct in JH. My fave was his glare just before the lift door closed when she was going to Cloud9.

This episode has stirred up serious chemistry between Yoo-jin and Je-Ha. (The umbrella scene... it was touching)Now I am more interested in a love line between them... it would be so awesome. She would be a badass fighting off her enemies while he would protect her from the sidelines and help her reach the top. Yoona gets zero reaction from me. The show is trying hard to build a connection between them from that ramen scene... but I just feel it.
I want noona romance!!!!!!!

Hi! Do watch my FMV I made with The K2's OST!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfO70dihZMg

Loving this drama even though I'm not a fan of political dramas......the ratings are also good man! Totally shipping the #CCTVCOUPLE but I secretly wish for something to still happen between CYJ and KJH I dont care if its one-sided HAHAH

The K2 reminds me of drama Yong Pal in many things. "Cloud Nine" is like the 12th floor /VIP floor in Yong Pal. Haha...
Ramen is not really a healthy food to eat, but that ramen scene just makes me crave for some instant noodles. I bet ya, after this drama both Yoona and Wookie will get some CF offers regarding ramen . LOL

well Yoona sequence is enough to make a ramen and I did it,
and I was eating dry ramen after seeing Anna did.
It just a simple thought like
"I haven't eating dry ramen for a while, why not try it now?"
and the PPL work, it probably feel differently when the audience never try dry Ramen or didn't have a stock of Ramen in house .

That was one of the most intense last will reading scene in the dramaland.
Loved the fighting scene in the hallway and interaction of JH and YJ afterwards.

Some of you decoded German lyrics of one of the songs and that it may refer to Snow White. (someone compared Anna to Snow White...)

Have you noticed there is another reference to Snow White in another song?
They sing: "Spieglein Spieglein an der Wand wer ist die Schönste im ganzen Land?"
(Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?)

The drama is not perfect, but I like those small details to the story...I think the song is played mostly when we have a YJ scene. Is it a reference that she is the witch? Because it was a question the witch asked the mirror it the fairytaile.

This may have been noted about Snow White.
When The Evil Queen, YJ, remarks in the voice over walking away from the bunker, that JH is not the hunter (Huntsman) but a wolf.
The original story ALSO had a hunter who did not obey her.
"The huntsman takes Snow White into the forest. After raising his knife, he finds himself unable to kill her and he spares her life. Snow White is told that her stepmother wants her dead and to get far away from the kingdom as possible. He instead brings the Queen the heart of a wild animal."

And you are right. He is like the huntsman. Not obedient.

The question is now, who are the 7 dwarfs? :)

I feel special then. I guess I'm in the 10% cause I'm a regular drama viewer and honest to god not a fan of SNSD and I'm liking Anna more than I do YJ. There's still a lot of potential in her character to grow and can't wait to watch her development.
