Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching
by DB Staff
How was your week in drama-watching? Are you hooked on shows or dropping them like flies, or are you clinging in through the bitter end out of loyalty? Are you surprised by what you’ve stuck with, or have you known all along which you’d stick through to the finish line? As for me, I find that no matter how many dramas I watch, there are still surprises to be had and expectations to be overturned… —javabeans

Currently recapping: Moonlight Drawn By Clouds
The K2: The Yoon-ah loveline feels like it’s been manufactured to grab our interest, but so far it’s a little too predictable to get fully invested in; I expect that I’ll get pulled in eventually, but right now it’s Ji Chang-wook and Song Yoon-ah’s scenes that have unexpectedly gripped me. I don’t necessarily want a romantic connection, but their relationship is complex and interesting, and their chemistry intense. I’m not sure the talking supercomputer was totally necessary, though, and I dearly wish they’d kick J4 off a cliff; talk about aggressively irritating.
Fantastic: I haaaated the memory loss interlude even if they explained it away with science (ish), because come on, what this terminal cancer drama needed was an extra dose of amnesia, right? But I outright cheered when Park Shi-yeon went on her wine-smashing rant, and loved that our good guys found a way to wriggle out of Evil Agent’s clutches using their smarts. Okay, really only one of them has any smarts, but this is why a Scooby Gang is better than a Lone Ranger, right?
Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: I’ve started really enjoying the experience of watching the show: Half of the appeal is in the squee-worthy Lee Jun-ki and IU developments, and the other half of the appeal is in laughing at how ridiculous the rest of the plot (and the acting, and the terrible rat-Jesus wig) is. I can’t believe it took Su so many episodes to see the So appeal and finally take a step in his direction, but on the upside, I did watch that kiss a whole bunch of times. Also: Everybody in this show has the most perfectly groomed eyebrows. They’re mesmerizing.
Drinking Solo: I love every single character in this show. Everybody feels fully fleshed out and interesting, like they’re all busy being the heroes in their own lives, rather than fulfilling “funny side character” quotas. Key is hilarious, Gong Myung is adorable, and the teachers are poignant and sweet. Last week I was dying to see Ha Suk-jin miserable as he tried to win over Park Ha-sun, but I have to say, I was impressed with the way he handled himself and found my vindictive spirits readily neutralized at his mature, reasonable, and non-aggressive reactions. I still want him to work to prove himself, but when he recognized that he needed to change, I came around to rooting for him.
Shopping King Louis: I don’t know if anybody could have done this role but Seo In-gook; he makes the character lovable and winsome even as I recognize that he’s a trouble magnet and often useless. Same goes for Nam Ji-hyun (as irreplaceable, that is, not useless), because she is so naive and bumpkinish, but endearing in a way that few actors can pull off. I died laughing at the cohabitation absurdities, and at Yoon Sang-hyun’s increasingly outrageous fashion choices.
1% of Anything: I suspect I’ll feel freer to get invested in the romance as soon as Drinking Solo ends, because right now my fandom loyalty goes to Ha Suk-jin with Park Ha-sun. That said, I find this drama light and breezy; the plot doesn’t move very quickly and the story is simple, but it’s good-natured and the couple has a very cute bantering dynamic.
girlfriday
Jealousy Incarnate: I’m loving Jealousy Incarnate lately. The characters are having a terrible time, but the show could not be funnier, and I really enjoy the tonal dissonance where we get to laugh at their pain. That’s not as mean as it sounds, I swear! There’s just a lot of comedy to be had in this messy, petty, warped triangle, and I’m having the best time watching these three lunatics figure out love.
On the Way to the Airport: The buildup to the romance was something else, but I think I started to fall out of step with the characters this week, when they wanted everything to stay the same once the affair had begun in earnest. I thought we were building towards a massive shift in these people’s lives, and though I still expect this to be the case in the long run, I was sitting there going, “Wait, so… you just want to cheat and stay married? Huh?”
Shopping King Louis: I find comfort in the fact that the villains are just as dumb as the good guys on this show, so they happen to end up on an even playing field despite the odds. There’s so much that doesn’t make sense for me when I’m watching this, but then Louis goes and says exactly what he’s feeling in the most honest, childlike, unaffected way possible, and I stop caring about anything else.
Drinking Solo: So, I admit to wanting Ha Suk-jin to stew a little longer in the mess he made, but I appreciated the redemption arc that didn’t suddenly give him a lobotomy, and showed small changes all within character. But what I love most is the students’ unrequited love train, where everybody’s in love with someone who’s in love with someone else, and twisting my heart in the best way.
Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village: I think I’m going to like this new season. Seo-jinnie is as grumpy on water as he is on land, Eric is surprisingly good at a lot of things, and Yoon Kyun-sang is useless but utterly adorable. My favorite thing so far is the way Kyun-sang looks at Eric like he’s some kind of genius, oh and the fact that he brought his two kitties along on the trip.
Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: I was frustrated by the fact that our couple had spent so much time building up all of this trust and us-against-the-world solidarity, only to have the heroine pull the go-to noble idiot card in time-honored drama tradition. Still, my hope is alive that the show will pull it together in the final week. Happy or sad, please don’t whimper off into the sunset!
Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: The time-skips are so counterproductive on this show. I guess their intention is to make it seem like we’ve watched these characters grow up, but mostly it makes me wonder why the hell nothing ever changes, and why the characters are so utterly inept. I’ve given up wanting anyone to be with anyone anymore. I just want Lee Jun-ki to kill everyone and become king. The end.
HeadsNo2
Currently recapping: Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo
W—Two Worlds: I finished it. Then I read the interview with the writer for answers. I’m not sure what I feel, but it’s something like relief that it’s over. Which is strange, because I enjoyed most of it.
Woman With a Suitcase: I wouldn’t have expected it when I first started out with this show, but it’s actually really funny. What at first seemed like a show that would only have the obligatory slapstick comedy moments turned into one with tons of heart and some gut-busting situational comedy. I mean, the guy’s name sounds like Hamburger, for crying out loud!
On the Way to the Airport: The tension! The simmering, simmering tension of it all. There’s just something about forbidden relationships that makes them come to life on screen naturally—if you pair that with two actors with amazing chemistry, then I’m sold. Kim Haneul and Lee Sang-yoon are sizzling on screen, and know how to make the most out of a phone call, a touch of the hand, a single word. The directing is also just stellar from week to week. Love, love, love.
The K2: I’m still trying to figure out whether this is another Runaway: Plan B situation, and if so, whether it’s better or worse. I think the writing could really be much stronger, and am still scratching my head over it taking six episodes to give Yoon-ah something to do. The mystery surrounding her doesn’t seem like much of a mystery at all, and I find myself frustrated with the conspiracy regarding the chief baddie of the show and Je-ha’s past, which I’m convinced we’ll never stop seeing in flashback form in every episode until there simply are no more.
Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: I haven’t quite felt the lull most people seem to be experiencing this past week, but it may just be because I love the show and its characters too much. Sure, the angst was a bit of a downer, and I still think that they’re finding ways to subvert our usual expectations for this stage of the relationship/show. I’m kind of sad it’s almost over, but am so very thankful that they didn’t force an extension on us.
1% of Anything: Utterly delightful. It’s old-fashioned, but it has its own sort of fresh appeal, unlike the old-fashioned drama we got with Cinderella and the Four Knights. This one feels like it’s trying, and has a zippy pace with plenty of laughs. And at the length (thirty or forty minutes an episode), it’s an easy watch.
SailorJumun
Shopping King Louis: I was stuck on the first episode for about two weeks, and when I finally got around to Louis and Bok-shil’s first meeting, I could finally see what everyone was raving about. This couple – oh my gosh, this couple – is so freaking cute I can’t stand it. Like a nice cup of hot chocolate, they fill me up with so much warmth and sweetness. So, needless to say, I was dreading the time when second lead Joong-won would inevitably try to tear the two apart out of jealousy. I draw the line with anyone who’d want to separate this precious couple. But something about Joong-won just makes the show even funnier. His antics remind me of the not-so-subtle dads that freak out whenever they see their daughter smiling with a boy.
Fantastic: I’m a few episodes behind thanks to my Louis marathoning, but I’m still smitten with this show and all its swoontastic men (minus Sul’s jerk-face husband of course). Now that Ji-soo’s back in the picture, I can breathe a sigh of relief 1. To see that puppy is okay, and 2. To see his character push Sul in the right direction. A few small gestures of kindness sure go a long way.
Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Bromance, whyyyy? Don’t leave me now!
awcoconuts
Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: While this week’s episodes lacked the emotional punch of previous weeks, I was more forgiving of the focus on plot development, perhaps because 1) the show has already built up so much goodwill with me and 2) as a newcomer to sageuk (okay, sageuk-lite) the storyline felt natural instead of tired. I’m looking forward to finale week and regardless of how it ends, I’ll look back fondly upon Moonlight and will be grateful to the show for having satiated me on so many levels.
Jealousy Incarnate: Last week’s helicopter heroism made me swoon, but I found myself scratching my head at the out-of-character developments towards the end. In this week’s episodes, more strange behavior was on display, seemingly to elicit laughter at the expense of authenticity. Lee Seon-kyun’s voice cameo (and Pasta throwback) was cute, but added nothing to the story. It seems we’re headed for an even more unrealistic detour over the next few weeks, but I hope the antics don’t go on so long that they take away from the sweet, funny show it started out as.
The K2: Sadly, I think I have to drop this and go my Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo route — which is to keep up with the shows through gummimochi and HeadsNo2’s excellent recaps, because I’m deriving far more enjoyment from their summaries and commentary than I am from actually tuning in each week. Song Yoon-ah is stellar, but she alone can’t compensate for the extraneous action scenes/car chases/explosions and verbose political speeches. The jarring choir music was getting to me, but it’s the objectification of Ji Chang-wook and the undue physicality that’s being demanded of him in this role that’s causing me to pull the plug. Healer-ya, you deserve better.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Felt a bit slowed down in terms of pace while the lovers are apart and dealing with angst. But I still love Yeong and RO a lot; not to mention, YS and BY.
Moon Lovers: I think LJG is the only reason this drama is even worth watching amidst the slivers of Jisoo here and there when his scenes are left uncut. I wonder if another time skip will happen from Yo's reign to So's takeover... Not that much time left in the show, so let's have more So-Su moments, shall we?
Fantastic: Love this series so much!! Every character is portrayed so well and I love how SW is stepping up to help Sul with the divorce. HS continues to be an awesome bf to SH and an amazing dongsaeng to his JK hyung. It's so heartwarming to see how these people want to make those around them feel happy and loved. The ladies' friendship is amazing and I feel like when they are together, they can face anything in this world--cancer, evil in-laws and husband, etc. The deep bond that they share, and how they always take care of each other makes it such a relief that they can lean on one another. And I love how they are now all connected together by association now with the men, SW being the final puzzle piece to their one big family. HS has a really kind and selfless heart. JK is so good at cheering others on despite being ill himself. SW is a man of justice and I can't wait for him to help free Sul. PH is the ever devoted husband. It's coming to an end soon and I think sadness is inevitable, but I thoroughly enjoy this show.
Other than these, I'm watching C-drama Whirlwind Girl 2 since I liked the first one a lot. It's too bad that the plot of this is kinda flat compared to the first one and I don't like Sean Chen's character's actions in how he forces Bai Cao to like him. I loved Yang Yang as Ruo Bai in the first one and was sad that his character is no longer here. JCW is probably the attraction point of this show. At least I don't mind this actress playing Bai Cao (since it switched from the first one) and the rest of the cast are familiar faces. Just finished ep. 24 and will wrap up the series soon.

I finally started watching Healer and after the first episode I thought it was overhyped, but boy was I wrong. Starting with episode 2 I absolutely loved it. I got till episode 6, I hope it maintains the quality till the end.
Also watching Shopping King Louis, K2 and I have Drinking Solo on my to be watched list.

"Moon Lovers" has become a drug to me Lol..I am not able to watch any other dramas..I know it has flaws..but i LOVE IT so much that , so the flaws doesn't actually matter..Lee jun ki is amazing as WS..I am loving Lee jun ki X IU 's chemistry-the main reason for me watching this drama..
I am re-watching all the episodes..Downloaded all the episodes in two days..lol..i am gonna have BIG ML WITHDRAWAL SYNDROME..
The storyline could have been more interesting if they had concentrated more on Wang so x Hae Soo..
Wook's character is interesting but i am unable to understand him sometimes..
Time leap seems unnecessary sometimes though.
Waiting for Wang So to become king..!!
i am loving the OST's..and i am so terribly angry with this re-editing-diff versions crap!

Seems like the reaction towards JI's recent development divided into two extremes. They who absolutely love it, and others who absolutely hate the wishy-washyness. And I'm definitely love it. The way they turn the angsty part of the story into comedy gold is much appreciated.
Watching sitcom Potato Star 2013 for now. And delighted at the smart use of amnesia trope. Go kyung-pyo acting as an adult with 8-years-old mind is fun.

Moon Lovers (Scarlet Heart Ryeo): love the story and all the characters. Even the bad guys aka eyeliner prince. I know there is going to be even more tears (according to a friend that watched the Chinese version) but it is all worth it.
By the way: anyone saw the Running Man episode with 3 of the princes? It was hilarious!
Moonlight Drawn by Clouds: Bogummy is awesome in this drama. Up until know the comedy and the drama factor where equal but I guess we will see more tearful scenes from now on. Let's hope for the best for our main couple and bromance.
The K2: I was hoping this to be the new Healer but then I read an interview to JCW where he said that he accepted the role as it was different to Healer because of a completely different atmosphere, so I did lower my expectations a bit. It does have potential and I do hope that it will get better and with less political speeches.

I can only handle two shows - too invested in them to watch any others! It's all about Moonday-Tuesday for me, and then flop around during the week, re-watching episodes and listening to OST:
Moon Lovers I've long turned to the dark side, weird close-ups included. Hae Soo is turning into the female character I'd been hoping. Did it really have to take 14 episodes for that to happen?
Drinking Solo So glad this show is receiving love here. I care about every character in this show. Di-ro-ri, Ki Bum is still my favourite, but it's time you start studying boy!

i'm only properly watching the K2. mainly for song yoon-ah, and more song yoon-ah. she is KILLING it. otherwise, i hope the show dials back on the "comic relief" and music. i love the choir music, but don't overuse it, because when it's great it can be really effective.
i continue to stand by my original assessment that ji chang-woo's acting has always rather been in the "consciously acting" category, and not necessarily 100 percent feeling. i got that sense in healer too. yet i enjoyed healer and enjoy the K2. but it's still true and frustrating that ji rarely manages to move me emotionally when he should. i just can't get beyond the sense that he's consciously acting, and not feeling the emotions he's supposed to be conveying.
i do like him, and i only saw these things out of regret because it's a waste of otherwise good stuff. he's one of the few in his age range who have proven to be convincing and successful in pulling off the action genre; this makes him stand out in a good way. he could be really outstanding if he brought his acting up to the same level. acting wise, i give him an 80 currently. but he really needs to be at a 90 at least.
all that said, this is my favorite show right now and i'm sad because i've already watched this week's batch.
other shows: fantastic, woman with a suitcase, and jealousy incarnate. only watching these because there's nothing else for me. i stopped moonlight drawn by clouds after episode 4, and i'm trying to get back into it for park bo-gum. however, i don't really... like... kim yoo-jung.
i know she's good for her age, and she was enchanting in moon embracing the sun. but do i think she makes a good grown-up actress? i'm not sure. i hesitate to criticize her, yet i need to be objective too. and objectively, she's just not that interesting here for me.
i'm only watching fantastic for jisoo. i couldn't tell you what was happening with the other characters if my life depended on it, and i don't really care. i stopped caring awhile ago.
woman with a suitcase is cute enough, but too predictable. joo jin-mo is still insanely handsome though.
jealousy incarnate- oh boy. it's getting zany, and i stopped taking it seriously when they started chucking octopuses at each other. it's entertaining enough, but i'm only sticking with it because i may as well as this point, to see it through. i intensely dislike the way go kyung-pyo is forcing his voice to be all low and manly—i know that's not his real voice. it's bugged me from day one.
basically i can't wait for some new dramas to start. when does legend of the blue sea begin!?

Both DB and GF's comments made me laugh out laugh. Succinct and to the point.
Just kill everyone and be king? That really really cracked me up.
I have to say thank you for recapping the dramas. Because I finally dropped ML. Can't be bothered. It's not even a proper sad story. The directing and writing is not up to wringing out the sufferings well. So what kiss are we talking about? The Monday episode one or was there another one?
I was going to drop Jealously incarnate because she kissed HS. But surprisingly once her conscience kicked in and she broke up with both guys? I was alright. Now I am just watching to see what insanity is going on. Still firmly on the JW- ship although their chemistry has tones done. I just need to see him in his tall lean looks to be happy each week. And if he is still prominently in the love triangle in episode 16 then I am happy to watch.
Luckily I've kept some dramas in reserve. Going back to ep 10 Fantastic and KoS ep 1.
Have to say I think we are very lucky to have so many good dramas to watch. I feel less frustrated when I have to drop one as there is another to take over.
I still haven't started Drinking Solo. Will probably marathon it. Like I did Age of Youth. It is good to have a good drama to marathon.
Am watching K2. Not a fan of CSW or whatever his initials are. Yoona is just crying and in need of so much psychiatric help I don't want to even see her in a loveline. She needs medical help and therapy. Not romance. I only comment because I pity the poor lead actor and stuntman here. Fighting on stones is brutal. I am talking about ep 8. He must be a mass of bruises day to day. If I was the actor my whole body would be aching too much to think about kissing Yoona. Landing on the roof tiles must be so painful as well. His chemistry with the CSY character is intense though. I think she is the female lead.

HHAHAHAHAHHAHA. I know, right? Kyunsang looks useless even though he's basically doing the hard work. I laughed so hard when Na PD asked him what in the world can he actually do. I guess he's a real-life Moohyul, strong but quite useless in other stuff. HAHA.
I'm so surprised at Eric though. He's making the best crab stew (according to Seojinnie) and it's only Day 1! No wonder Kyungsang is so amazed at him.
So excited for the Seojinnie-Koongie love line though. They're so cute!!
Ahh... I should really watch dramas again.

OOoooh! Thanks for the recommendation of some Chinese dramas! I've been looking for some good ones to watch. I will check out Mystic 9 and Rookie Agent Rouge
The Four - handsome actors, yes but horrible drama (imo). The good looking actors weren't enough to keep me watching. Dropped it.
Return of Condor Heroes - which one? Legend of the Condor Heroes starring Ariel Lin & Hu Ge is great. Loved it.

Thanks for the update guys! I'm picky when it comes to dramas so your reviews help me a lot.
I'm still watching K2, despite being irritated by some issues. There's something addicting about it.
I have also started watching Louis. Its an easy watch. I'm watching it leisurely when i have time. The OTP are adorbs and winsome.
Regarding Moonlight, i'm with awcoconut. I have mentioned this in the recap that i believe this drama will be one of the classics that i will remember dearly. Regardless of the ending.
When i ask for drama suggestions i always have difficulties to describe my preference. While i enjoy lots of dramas, the one that i remember fondly are Winter Sonata, Ijuksa, Snow Queen, City Hunter, King 2Hearts. Is it melodrama? But i dont love all melodramas.

Forget about the Chinese version, historical accuracy and etc., I have quite enjoyed watching The Moon Lovers as a fairytale in its own right. The acting of the three main leads are just vivid, alive and wonderful! Flower of prison is my another favourite drama in the weekend. It is near its finale. Very enjoyable journey all along. Last week I said I would start k2 but I'm still just staying on reading recaps n I figured I probably would still do that this week. Ended up starting, marathon and finish Gogh Starry Night (Yuri and Young kwang) in 1.5 days. It was such a breezy watch and the flow, simple direction and article narration style and Gu Ho awarding stars to the male was actually interesting. This was a rare fluff type with substance because for a short drama I saw growth in the character and simple heart searching for the female lead. Furthermore Manager Kang, such a grumpy pants but 1sided love for 4yrs a d secretly helping her in terms of guiding her in her career. This guy is such a complicated mix of rude and sweet.. I wish i have a daddy long legs protective type of manager.. Evy wprkday would be a treat. Kinda refreshing his style of romance. He's probably the first make otp who keep snapping at the girl to look away only to secretly smile. Did anyone on Dramabeans team watch it? It's really worth watching- 20mins of 20 episodes kinda equivalent to 7 episodes of typical Korean drama.
The other dramas I'm religiously watching is Fantastic and MoonLovers.

Thanks for the recaps! My husband thinks I'm crazy but when Cinderella and the 4 Knights ended last month he thought my Kdrama queue would drop, but I picked up K2 (Ji Chang-wook you just had to release an action thriller?!) so I'm right back up to 12 dramas, I had to refrain from starting too many that show on the same night or I would never get any sleep.....you would think by now I would understand Korean.......
