Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Episode 13
by javabeans
Today puts us more in Ra-on’s shoes than I think we’ve been in a long time, and it’s an effective way to attune our emotions to hers, feeling the layers of meaning beneath the words she speaks and the smiles she sends. If only that didn’t make me so nervous about everyone else—everyone who doesn’t have the benefit of our dramatic irony and thus know what we do. Sometimes it’s such a burden knowing everything!
EPISODE 13: “Tenderly, goodbye”
Ra-on’s mother is determined to run away with Ra-on, and tells Teacher Dasan of her fears that somebody will make the link to her father. But of course, that’s the exact moment Ra-on arrives at the door, and she overhears the conversation with shock.
Now, Ra-on finally makes sense of all those things she didn’t understand before: Why she was forced to dress as a boy, and why they were constantly on the run. She says she understands her mother now, doing everything she could to shield Ra-on from the fact that her father was a traitor responsible for the deaths of thousands of peasants.
Ra-on’s mother tells her not to hate her father too much; he was trying to make the world a better place for her. But knowing the truth now just makes it all the more painful now, and Ra-on cries, “You should have kept me from knowing through the end.” Then she changes her mind: “No, you should have told me sooner.”
Ra-on’s mother holds her, apologizing. Ra-on cries for a moment, then asks her mother to let her go back today. Her mother is alarmed, insistent that they leave as soon as possible, but Ra-on promises to return soon: “He’s waiting. He doesn’t know anything.”
So later that night, Yeong waits outside Ra-on’s building, his face relaxing in relief when she arrives. She looks at him brightly while he scolds her for being late, and asks if he means to “punish” her again. Yeong laughs, noting that she seems to be looking forward to it, then steps forward to embrace her.
Ra-on keeps her smile in place until that hug, at which point it turns tearful. Yeong tells her he’ll forgive her since she came back safely.
In the morning as Ra-on finishes dressing Yeong, he notices that nobody else is around and asks if Eunuch Jang saddled her with all his duties. Ra-on replies that she requested to take on all the duties for the next few days, because she was unable to see Yeong for so long while he recovered from his injuries.
Yeong feigns a scolding attitude for all of two seconds before he breaks into a grin: “If you wanted me all to yourself so badly, I’ll allow it.”
Then Ra-on takes Yeong by the hand and makes a request to stay within a step of him all day, and to lean on his shoulder and nap on his knee. He readily assents to it all, including her added request for him to look at her all day instead of his books.
Yeong says it’s his turn, and asks if she’s mentally prepared. He pulls her close by the nape of the neck, and smiles when she closes her eyes. When he doesn’t kiss her, Ra-on cracks open an eye, and he tells her, “Do not make requests. I will do whatever you say.”
Ra-on takes his hand again, and they beam at each other like that, for long moments.
Yeong resumes holding court, and Minister Kim makes a show of bemoaning the terrible attempt on the prince’s life. Yeong notes that the minister ignoring his dismissal is an even more appalling occurrence, to which the prime minister says that he has shown loyalty by keeping his post throughout the prince’s absence.
But Minister Jo speaks up to point out that ignoring his dismissal is a flagrant act of disloyalty—and his breaking of the ranks surprises not only the Kim clan but the prince as well. Ah, so has Minister Jo decided to side with the king then?
The dismissed Minister Kim insists that he was just fulfilling his duties in a moment of crisis, and pleads for the prince’s understanding. The rest of the court chimes in.
Yeong hears the report from his royal commander regarding his assassination attempt: By the time soldiers had been mobilized, nine of the intruders were already dead. At that count, Byung-yeon furrows his brow—perhaps sensing a discrepancy there? The commander apologizes for not capturing anyone alive to provide them with answers.
Yeong is certain that they were directed by a palace insider, which would be the only way they could infiltrate the grounds unseen. Byung-yeong looks a bit concerned at that, while Yeong orders his commander to find any survivors.
With his left hand still healing from the fight, Yoon-sung drops a handful of scrolls. He kneels to pick them up, but Ra-on gets there first, and he brightens at the sight of her. She assures him that she’s fine and wasn’t hurt, and Yoon-sung asks after the prince’s condition.
Yeong happens to arrive then and replies that he’s fine, and the two men trade bows.
They step aside for a private talk, and Yeong admits that at a certain point, he was unable to see Yoon-sung purely as himself. Yoon-sung understands that, given that he’s meant to carry on the Kim bloodline.
“That reason is not wrong,” Yeong says. “However, seeing you take the sword headed for me with your bare hand—I was sorry.” Yoon-sung asks if he can consider some of his debt of gratitude to have been relieved, and states with new conviction, “From this moment on, I will not wait, or take special care, or make requests.”
Yeong understands that he’s declaring himself as a rival (nooo, what about my beautiful bromance) and says he doesn’t intend to stop Yoon-sung: “It’s when one has tried their hardest that one can resign.”
That night when Yeong finds Ra-on in his library, she tells him to pay attention as she indicates which books require airing out, and which have been damaged. Ack, stop making everything sound like goodbye! Yeong asks why he has to know this, and says she’s doing needless work when that can all be taken care of in due time. She replies, “Whether it’s done at once or slowly, it’s all work I must do.”
Then Ra-on asks if she should write down the nighttime story she’d told him when he couldn’t sleep, but he says that there’s no need: “Whenever I want to hear it, I can just call you.”
A few moments later, Yeong looks around for Ra-on and doesn’t see her. She surprises him by enveloping him in a back-hug, and asks to stay like this just for a short while. Yeong smiles, and tells her she can stay like that for a long, long while instead.
Ra-on locks her fingers together as she holds him around his waist, and he places his hands on top of hers and leans back into her embrace. I should note that even the background song is urging her not to break up: If the two of us become one again, let us never separate. Even if the harsh rain shakes us, let us not be apart. Let us not collapse.
Ha-yeon drops by the palace and speaks to Ra-on, and admits ruefully that her advice to be honest about her feelings with the prince didn’t work. Ha-yeon explains, “So from now on, I have decided not to reveal my feelings, in order to stay by the prince’s side. If I do that, even if I am not the person he cares for, I can become someone who will help him.”
Ra-on seems worried for Ha-yeon’s own sake, asking if that won’t be difficult for her. Ha-yeon agrees that it will be, but says that the day may come when he will recognize her feelings. She asks if she’s pathetic, but Ra-on assures her she isn’t, and asks Ha-yeon to take good care of the prince: “A lady like you suits the prince.”
Ha-yeon says that it feels like Ra-on has become her friend and asks if it would be okay to call her when she needs to talk things out. She admits to waiting around the garden for ages for a glimpse of the prince and is about to give up, but Ra-on calls her back, though she hesitates to speak.
The next thing we know, Ha-yeon is making her way to the prince’s private library—Ra-on must have tipped her off. Yeong hears footsteps and starts to scold Ra-on for disappearing on him, but cuts himself off to see Ha-yeon instead.
She explains that she had something to ask him, and reminds him of his words about having a woman in his heart. Given that he’s been rejecting pressure to marry, she wonders if that woman is someone he is unable to marry.
“I will become your nest,” Ha-yeon offers. She points out that he can’t refuse to marry forever, and suggests that he find someone who would be helpful to himself and the king. Yeong asks if she means herself, and she replies yes: “In order to flap your wings and take on grand ambitions, please use me and my family.”
Meanwhile, Yoon-sung calls Ra-on and faces her sternly, making her wonder at his angry expression. Yoon-sung admits to feeling angry with himself for always being a step late: “But this time, I must not be late. Not for me, but for you.” He urges her to leave.
Yeong tells Ha-yeon he won’t be able to give her any of his heart. She replies that she is not so pathetic as to beg for affection from a man who carries another woman in his heart. He asks why she wants to be the princess given these circumstances, and she says that it’s for the future of her family.
Yeong warns, “Your family may flourish, but you will be infinitely lonely.” Ha-yeon answers, “It does not matter. It is only a deal for us both to profit from.” She does her best to seem assured, though her eyes already look sad.
Yoon-sung tries to convince Ra-on of the urgency, saying that he’s not asking her to come to him; he just wants her safe. But Ra-on tells him she plans to leave, and asks him not to let on that he knows: “If you know much about me, it will not be good for you.”
He asks what she means—those words make him wonder if she knows what he does. She cuts him off and repeats her warning.
Ministers Dumb and Dumber get bad news: The tenth assassin that got away the night of the prince’s attack has since been caught. If he confesses while under interrogation, their necks are on the line.
Prime Minister Kim overhears the conversation and demands and explanation, nearly blowing his top upon hearing that the last assassin is now in custody.
Young Master Jung reports to Yeong that the white masks worn by the assassins were not the same masks belonging to the rebel secret society (named Baekwoonhwe, or White Cloud Society, for the white masks they wear and the “cloud” character written on the messages they leave behind).
He explains that the rebels wear their masks not to conceal their identities but to make their cause more widely known. That’s why every time they are involved in an incident, they leave behind something explaining their reasons. But there was nothing left after the prince’s attack; they were only there to kill Yeong.
Byung-yeon joins them just then, and Yeong clocks his reaction to seeing the mask there on his desk. Byung-yeon does his best to not betray anything, and informs Yeong that he needs to go somewhere right away.
The tenth assassin is tortured and interrogated at the royal tribunal, under the watch of the three Kim ministers. The man begs for mercy, saying that he was only doing as ordered, but Minister Dumber presses him, acting the part of the righteous official. The man looks over to Minister Dumb, who nods back. Hm, there’s something there.
Yeong calls a halt to the proceedings, then orders Minister Dumber to stop with the torture and resume interrogation. So the torturers step aside and the minister asks again who ordered the assassination attempt.
But the Kims aren’t too worried that he’ll spill, and a flashback shows us why: Minister Dumb had visited the assassin in his prison cell and offered him a deal. If he did as ordered, the man’s family would be spared.
So now, the minister digs the hilt of his sword into the man’s leg as a reminder, and the assassin mumbles a name: Baekwoonhwe. Gack! Byung-yeon (and quite possibly Yeong too) has to know he’s lying, but is hardly in a place to dispute it. The man declares that there’s a Baekwoonhwe member inside the palace who helped them infiltrate it.
To make the claim even more credible, the assassin declares that Hong Kyung-rae’s daughter is alive and inside the palace, preparing to revive the rebellion. Minister Dumber asks who that is, and Byung-yeon and Yeong both tense as he starts to answer.
And then, a hand grabs a sword and drives it through the man, stunning everyone present. Prime Minister Kim silences him before he has a chance to say it, and Yeong turns on him furiously. The prime minister says that the man confessed to treason (hence deserved to die), but Yeong argues that he had no right to kill anyone, traitor or not, without the king’s approval.
Prime Minister Kim replies that both the king and prince are so prone to hesitation that he had no choice but to step in.
Yeong grabs Byung-yeon’s sword and levels it against the prime minister, demanding, “Killing my citizen in front of me, the crown prince, makes you another traitor—do you not know that?” The prime minister replies levelly that if his action endangered the royal house, the prince ought to kill him right now.
The ministers all call for Yeong to back down, and the prime minister tells him that endangering the nation is cause for swift punishment. Yeong replies that this is exactly why he cannot withdraw his sword now, and the cries of the ministers grow.
Finally, it’s Byung-yeon who places a hand on Yeong’s and refuses to let go. Yeong glares and resists, but ultimately lets him pull his arm down.
The ministers breathe a sigh of relief, although Prime Minister Kim scarcely bats an eye.
The next day at mealtime in the eunuch department, Ra-on surprises Eunuch Jang by setting a piece of food on his spoon. Ah, will you stop with the touching final acts of consideration to people who don’t know you’re leaving? *Wahhhhhh*
She tenses when the other eunuchs talk about the captured assassin, who was supposedly acting in concert with Hong Kyung-rae’s allies. Even more upsetting is the rumor that Hong’s daughter is currently a spy in the palace, and opened the gate for the assassins.
Princess Myeongeun takes tea at an outdoor pavilion, and lovelorn Young Master Jung watches from a distance, a letter in his hand. It’s that letter that she discovers left for her on her way out, and she opens it to find a picture—of herself, in her chubbier days.
The accompanying message is something of a riddle: “You who are not present, but neither are you absent, my nim (dear).” (That’s a reference to how he’d told the princess his sweetheart was neither still in the palace nor gone from it.) The letter is signed with the name Jung Deok-ho, and she tries to place it, finally landing on Young Master Jung.
He appears before then, and while her first reaction is assuming that he’s here to annoy her again, he identifies himself as Jung Deok-ho. Princess Myeongeun is shocked, having thought he’d loved Wol-hee, and he’s so astonished that he stutters to come up with an explanation, grabbing for her hand to insist that she’s the one he loved.
Princes Myeongeun slaps him for daring to touch her and turns away angrily as he tries to stammer out that he loves her. With no other way to stop her from leaving, he yells, “HEY!” Omo and hahaha.
The princess turns, and he says, notably in the most familiar banmal, “It’s you. You. The person I love.”
The Kims convene to discuss the death of their henchman, and who he’d last met with. Once they meet with that source, they’ll be able to figure out what information the henchman died before he could deliver. As we know, it was Yoon-sung who intercepted that message to keep Ra-on’s identity safe—though if his elders track down the message’s source, they’ll discover it anyway.
The queen receives word that her hidden court lady has given birth to a son. That’s exactly what she was hoping for, although she’s not out of the woods yet, since she’s still pregnant. She informs her eunuch to ensure that the baby’s cries are not heard…
Which is exactly what Yoon-sung hears when he drops by to make an obligatory greeting to the queen. He spots a court lady slipping out of a room, and files this information away. Then when he visits the queen, he inquires after her condition and notes her uneasiness.
The king rebukes the prime minister for acting in haste in killing the assassin. Prime Minister Kim says he’s ferreted out the identity of the spy in the palace and hands over a scroll as proof. The king reads the name Hong Ra-on, which makes Head Eunuch Han look up in alarm.
Eunuch Han meets with Byung-yeon later, and tells him that they will now protect Ra-on under Baekwoonhwe’s name. “The time has passed for waiting for a choice,” he declares. Byung-yeon is alarmed at the implication that they’d take Ra-on by force, but Head Eunuch Han says they can’t leave her in danger and informs him that they’ll remove Ra-on secretly tomorrow.
With the palace ready to start their search for the hidden spy, the Kim faction is equally aware of the need to locate Ra-on first, knowing that she would be a valuable trump card for them. Yoon-sung overhears this, looking stricken, and leaves his home wearing a stern face.
He runs right into Byung-yeon, who’s been waiting for him outside, armed with a request. He reminds Yoon-sung that he’d acted against his grandfather’s wishes once to save Ra-on, and asks him now to take her away from the palace secretly.
That night, Ra-on watches Yeong as he sleeps—or rather, as he drowsily insists that he’s not sleepy¸ and that there’s no need for her to stay up all night. She replies that she wants to look at him all night, to which he replies, “You can see me tomorrow to your heart’s content.”
She says, “Things we always see and always do—there are times when they suddenly feel precious, are there not?”
Yeong thinks, and says, “That’s true, when you think they are the last time.” She agrees, the tears pooling in her eyes as she explains how the most trivial things can feel special when you think they’re the last time.
Yeong concedes the point (but doesn’t connect the dots) and pats the space next to him, inviting her to look her fill. Ra-on kneels next to his bed and smiles down at him tenderly, cupping her face in her palm as she stares at his face. Suddenly Yeong grabs her hand and pulls her into bed with him, covering her with the blanket.
Ra-on asks, “If I had been born the daughter of a nobleman and come to your side, would you have looked on me fondly?” He replies, “Is that not obvious?”
She asks if they would have still been fated to meet if she hadn’t dressed as a young nobleman that day, and he replies with the same answer.
He cups her face with his hand, their eternity bracelets just inches from each other, and says, “Did I not tell you? Even if we turn and turn, we are fated to meet again.”
He falls asleep then, and she continues to stare at his face. She thinks forlornly, “But, one day, even if you were to learn that I am the daughter of a traitor, will you not regret having met me? Right now, this moment—will you long for it just once?”
With a tear falling from her eye, Ra-on leans in to press a kiss to Yeong’s lips. His eyes flutter open for the briefest moment as he smiles into the kiss, and then they fall closed in sleep again.
Ra-on pulls back and traces his face with her fingers, then nestles close as she cries quietly in his arms.
When Yeong wakes in the morning, he’s in bed alone. He calls out for Ra-on and doesn’t see her, then calls out for anyone outside. It’s Eunuch Jang who steps inside, and he says he hasn’t seen Ra-on yet this morning.
Yeong steps outside to an ominous sight, with soldiers combing the palace grounds. Minister Kim greets him, and Yeong asks about the disturbance. It’s the first time he’s hearing of the king’s order to capture the rebel leader’s daughter, who has finally been confirmed to be hiding in the palace as a spy.
That in itself doesn’t startle Yeong, who just asks if the report gave a description of that daughter. Minister Kim tells him that they have no physical description, but know that she’s eighteen years old and used to live with her mother—and that her childhood name was Hong Ra-on.
At that name, everything goes fuzzy as Yeong’s brain shuts out all sound. He doesn’t hear the rest of Minister Kim’s sentence, and asks him to repeat that name.
The minister clocks Yeong’s odd reaction, and explains that everyone in that age range is being investigated, and that the daughter will be using a different name now.
Yeong reels. He stands stock-still in the rain, hardly knowing what to do with the information.
He next heads to Ra-on’s quarters, thinking of when Ra-on first told him her name. He calls Ra-on’s name aloud and looks around, and then all goes silent for a moment…
…until he sees her eunuch’s uniform neatly folded and left behind—and her eternity bracelet with it.
COMMENTS
Aw, sniff. *wails* Why can’t they just find some magical miracle solution to be together without somehow committing capital crimes and upending the whole social order? Is that asking for too much? Where’s our fairy gatmother when we need one?
That said, I thought the whole episode was a classy affair. It was a loving tribute to farewell—I knew it was coming and felt it in every interaction, but it was handled in such a tender, heartfelt way that it felt like there was comfort mixed in there amongst the dread. (I mean, mostly dread. But still, a little comfort.) A lot of dramas employ this type of farewell trip motif, often in the form of one perfect day meant to sustain both people through the separation stretching before them—and most of the time, I hate it. Mostly because it’s crushingly unfair to the one party who’s left in the dark about it being farewell at all, and also because most of the time the ensuing separation is dumb as a doorknob. No offense to doorknobs, which are frequently useful.
Sometimes, though, a story finds the poignancy in the perfect last day and uses it well. I don’t actually know how this drama managed to make me like it, except maybe I appreciated having an episode’s worth of time to anticipate the eventuality, like easing into the mourning. Or maybe it’s because it I loved that it gave Ra-on a chance to be freer with her emotions in a way she couldn’t be before, prodding her into pouring all of her love out into every possible moment. As a result, not only does the episode show Ra-on really feeling the preciousness of every last moment, it also accomplishes that on a meta level, because it got me emotionally right there with her at every step, feeling the finality and momentousness of each interaction.
I’m extra sad that Ra-on left behind her bracelet, because it makes their separation feel extra final; Yeong reminds her of the superstition associated with the bracelets, that as long as the two lovers keep wearing it, they are fated to reunite. So it’s a rejection of that promise to reunite, indicating that she doesn’t expect to ever see him again. I suppose in that sense it’s an effective way to set the prince free to marry; historically speaking it makes every kind of sense for him to marry Ha-yeon no matter what Ra-on’s status, but given that this is a fusion sageuk meant to satisfy modern sensibilities, it gives narrative permission for him to marry someone else.
I have to say I am glad that Ra-on is finally out of the palace, because it feels like it’s been a long time coming. I don’t wish that they’d done this earlier, because I wouldn’t take back any moments of Ra-on and Yeong’s relationship development; it’s just a good time in the story to have her identity finally outed. Having Ra-on stay in the palace till now gave their relationship a chance to blossom and flourish in such a way that I feel like they’ve become a married couple—they have interacted like a firmly established couple who are solid in their commitment and assured of their standing, in a way that goes beyond mere sweethearts. So from a story standpoint, it’s time to move to the next part of the conflict.
It also turns the royal wedding into less of an expected angstfest for me, because I don’t think any of us were looking forward to watching Ra-on step back while another woman married the prince. I’m a little wary of what the drama will feel like when you take away the sweet stolen moments between Yeong and Ra-on, because that’s been a huuuuge part of its charm. Not the only charm, but definitely one of the prominent ones. I suppose after twelve episodes of satisfying, emotionally gratifying emotion, it’s time to put my trust in the producers to find a way to maintain its energy and emotional pull in new situations. Eeeee. *squints* *holds breath*

I know, right? I was tearing up when Ra On said that she must go back and that CP does not know anything about her real identity. And that was in the first 5 minutes of the show!

Ra-On was killing all of us in this episode. Always just on the verge of tears, never letting them spill until she was sure no one could see.
And watching her drink in and save up memories and details of the Crown Prince for the future--what it feels like to kiss his lips, to hug him tight, to hold his hands, the slope of his face--that just broke my heart for her even further.
Kudos to the director and KYJ for displaying that level of intimacy (seriously, sleeping in each other's arms is a lot for this time period no?) in a way that strongly sells the story and also respects the actress who is a minor.

When Raon said, "He is waiting. He doesn't know anything." /CRIES
And of course the rest of the episode had me in the verge of tears as well. Great. And probably even more tears for Episode 14. Excellent.

The preview promises more misery and plenty of longing (please delete if this is a spoiler!) but it's early days. Knowing how efficiently the MDBC team resolves issues, they should be able to meet again by episode 15 at the latest. They might even meet again at the end of the next episode!
Bring on the heartache, show! I will never let go of your metaphorical hand!
@Luna
This is the best episode of the series, IMO. All the episodes were great, but this was one was a real punch to the gut. I love it (but please don't hurt my puppies too much!)

It's a rom.com with a historical background. It was time for her to leave. She is being found out and she would've been executed on the spot and Yeong would not be able to save her.
That wouldn't be a rom.com ending right?

Gosh, hug, backhug, kiss, bedscene it’s all lead to the inevitable separation.
The bromance and romance is just great.
LY said YS can go ahead and try all he could before giving up, and clear up the reason why they been distanced. BY hold LY hand to stop him. BY asked YS to run away with RO, I wonder if BY was referring to the time when YS helped rescue RO from Chinese envoy or the time when he killed the informer? Can we have a 3 way bromance for next ep please? I want them to fight side by side <3
This episode, it seems like yoonsung also acquired the ability to eavesdropping on important conversation like byeong yeon. Discovering the baby of the maid, hearing his grandpa convo and their plan.
From preview for next ep, RO make it out of the palace with YS and LY is heartbroken TT.TT
I knew she would leave, but I was hoping that at least she would tell LY the truth, well, the drama took the typical route this time round, RO leave without telling, displaying noble idiocy.
I also feel for Hayeon this episode, she knows she can’t have LY’s heart, but she still chose to be helpful to him, like LY said “her family might prosper, but she alone, will have to endure loneliness”
Side note: we will have our happy ending right? Because our leads are YeongOn (doesn’t it sound similar to yeongwon (영원) = forever/eternity?)

since we have today's episode,
the hint about the search and the kidnap plan for Ra-On the next day is a sudden deadline,
I think it's not noble idiocy, she indeed planned to leaves but we still didn't know how she did it, did she planned to told him the reason or saying a goodbye or told kim hyung?
she is bound to disappear that night,
either by herself, by the kidnapper or get caught by the prime minister faction,
Noble idiocy means to leave and they still had nothing to gain cause the sacrifice is useless,
here, the crown prince knew why she'll leaves, the timing is sucked, she didn't know the head eunuch and the prime minister's plan about her and her leaving him actually benefitted him in many ways except their relationship,
to call this noble idiocy at this moment seems not fit cause this is just a one-way separation and we have 1 more episode for the answer,

I don't think she plan to tell Yeong at all, just like how she stopped Yoonsung from asking the question. She probably thinks it better to keep Yeong in the dark, because sometimes, not knowing the truth is better? Like that why she asked her mum why didn't the mum keep the secret from her forever. then she asked why didn't the mother tell her sooner indication that if she had known sooner, she wouldn't have fallen deep into this relationship.
but yea, at least this drama doesn't keep yeong in the dark for too long, he knows her reason on that same day, it just a bit unsatisfying for me because I want her to tell the truth and leave, instead of him knowing from a third party?

I'm satisfied with how Yeong knew it. I was thinking about it and if Raon told him, what then? My guess is Yeong will just merely convince her to stay by his side and that he will protect her yada yada. Just like how he reacted with her being a girl. I know it's a different circumstance but Yeong's so in love at this point I don't think he'll be rational about it. He will keep his promise to not let go. He will continue fighting for that fairy tale ending which is really but a dream at this point. Leaving the palace now is truly the best choice for Raon herself. It's decision she (smartly) made.
Yeong is really the emotional one in this relationship. Raon is a lot more realistic and grounded.

I whole-heartedly agree that Yeong is the dreamer, the emotional one, the one who's more likely to act on his morals rather than be swayed by bribes or dangerous situations. It's a credit, I think, to growing up with more of his mother's influence. He's pretty whimsical, too, and maaaaaan I love him so much it hurts that he's hurting!

I agree Raon did her best given the circumstances. If she is told Yeong and Minister Kim or the Queen found out he knew they might have tried to convince the King he is conspiring with rebels. Minister Kim is smart enough to make it seem plausible too. Especially if he found out that hot bodyguard (BG) is a rebel. The king is already paranoid, it would not end well for Yeong.

I agree that Yeong is so emotional,
this drama like to show the obvious greatness of Yeong (his character gonna be a king,a good king is better be virtuos and eloquent) but also show his weakness little by little,
his apology to yoon sung, his feeling for Ra-on, his loyal feeling to byung yeon, the hope for his father , memory of his mum, his persistant in aiming for love and very idealistic point of view make him emotional and quite stubborn.
This all doesn't do much harm (yet) but also doesn't make him perfect, he has the normal flaw like everyone else that can clouded his judgment if he let it out of control,

Though wise and kind, with many ideals, a part of me feels that Yeong is too benevolent for a king of his time. Sometimes, to be an effective ruler, one has to be hard and make difficult decisions - cannot always go with the heart.

I must admit that I did not like that Raon kept Yeong in the dark thinking it is best for him not to know the truth. They've always been able to communicate. I just don't see the benefit of keeping something from someone who is obviously affected by such information, especially if it is bound to be revealed one way or another. I get that the intention is good, but keeping something from someone because one thinks it is not good for them or they will be hurt etc. is assuming. Why not let that person decide how s/he will take the information and how s/he would feel about it instead of deciding on your own?
On the other hand, I did not completely disliked how Raon handled her identity. It was saved by the immediate knowledge that Yeong had on the same day that she left. And like JB, I normally hate it when the other person is making and keeping memories right before the separation without the knowledge of the other, but it was handled with such poignancy here that it didn't bother me that much.
I give props to the writer who, again, managed to handle each episode with just the right amount of delay and reveal. One episode of full-on YeongOn angst is probably coming our way.

I could understand why she'd keep it from him though. If I were to put myself in her shoes, I don't even know how I'd break it to Yeong that my father is a traitor. And facing the possibility that Yeong might turn from me if he knew I'm a daughter of traitor (referring to Ra-on's inner monologue asking if he'd regret meeting her if he'd known)? It wasn't easy for Ra-on at all. She practically cried to her mom "He doesn't know a thing!"

that's how I feel about this separation, it was done well, in the way that I'd suspected it would, that RO would leave without telling LY.
But there's a part of me that hoped for the show to put a twist to it, that she would still leave after disclosing the truth instead
SJH

Because it is drama and need angst.. But i understand RaOn perspective because she didnot want Yeong to love traitor's child and lose the crown. I just hope there is a way out of this misery in next episodes that is reasonable.

You know what, if I were Raon, I would do exactly that same as she did. Like, I'm endangered myself so of course I need to get away from the palace, to save myself (and mum) first and foremost. It's like hitting two birds with one stone because with me gone, Yeong would be safer and his wedding will go through smoothly. I may be selfish for not disclosing the truth of my identity but at the very least I left without experiencing the possibility of him doubting me...

"I may be selfish for not disclosing the truth of my identity but at the very least I left without experiencing the possibility of him doubting me…" @Honey
then isn't better to tell the truth and explain everything? so that he would not suffer the doubt alone? isn't it more heartbreaking for him not just from the separation, but also doubt that their love was real and question her motive?
Personally, I would like Yeong to know the truth from Raon, so that there won't be misunderstanding.and if yeong knows, perhaps he could find a safe place for raon to hide?

I think being honest with him would have made him have more faith in her. But perhaps that's not what Ra-on wanted. Like I've said above, he would never have let her go had he known. She wanted him to move on, and he'd never be able to if he knew he could still hold on to her.

October 4, 2016 at 12:26 PM
I'm not convinced she did leave of her own accord. There are multiple ways she could have gone, including being kidnapped.
The bracelet being left behind is telling. I'm not sure Ra-on would have left the bracelet at this point. Considering her conversation the night before on their fate, and her desire to probably hold on to some little part of their love. At the same time, maybe she wanted to make it final for herself and him, so they could move on.
But why introduce and spend screen-time on the idea of the kidnapping and have it be meaningless? I like the idea that she was kidnapped or escorted by Yoon-sung, and he left the bracelet behind to sever anything she would have had with Yeong.

How exactly does one define "noble idiocy "?
Noble idiocy is when you persist to self-condemn yourself usually for inane reasons to break away from the relationship.
While I agree that Raon could have told the CP the truth herself, I don't think it was noble idiocy that prompted her to leave the palace.
It was a prudent, level-headed measure to protect the CP's life and thousands of innocent lives. Where lives are put on the line because of your palace stay, you will not think twice leaving it particularly if the person at risk is a person you would give up your life for.

so
1) did she leaves alone?
2) did she gets kidnap and get a rescue?
3) did she go with yoon sung?
it's the timing, the bad luck
and I want to give some opinion regarding "keeping yeong in the dark" theme.
Ra-on is directly related to the rebellion and the prince assasination attempt based on the "10th man" story and will put her on the death row,
therefore, crown prince need to have no relation to her whatsoever, even in attempt to hide or helping her,
he can't have any information about it so when crown prince got asked or interrogate, he genuinely innocent and that can't brought him down,
this is politic after all, that's why byeong yeon asked yoon sung cause byeong yeon and ra-on is the child that should never existed near the crown prince for his political side and already part of the past.
In the other side
"don't you think there's a letter in the library?", implied by the book arrangement
and I actually really like this episode because we have yeong and yoon sung reconciliation, and yeong freaking apologised,
a bit realised that lee young is kinda ignorant about everyday life (can he even cook?) and probably our last happy episode,
ps; there should be a limited screen time for god byeong yeon close up, cause it's so sleek and pretty that it can kill me,
and what if ra-on just take a bath?? that's why she leaves the clothes. probably get ambushed there, so the goodbye is out of the schedule,
also did anyone realised that the clouds is the rebellion's logo???

White is a positive colour representation.
Taken from a website..
"The meaning of the color white is purity, innocence, wholeness and completion. White is color at its most complete and pure, the color of perfection. The color meaning of white is purity, innocence, wholeness and completion.
In color psychology white is the color of new beginnings, wiping the slate clean, so to speak. It is the blank canvas waiting to be written upon. While white isn't stimulating to the senses, it opens the way for the creation of anything the mind can conceive.
White contains an equal balance of all the colors of the spectrum, representing both the positive and negative aspects of all colors. Its basic feature is equality, implying fairness and impartiality, neutrality and independence."
So its suit and fit well in with what the clan does.. they want to make a whole new better world, dont they? maybe it just so happen to be white and i overthink, but i find that if thats the meaning, its pretty nice and a touch to it..

I like the metaphor of cloud and moonlight in this drama too. I know the director said there's no grand metaphor here but the way we see it is entirely different. I agree that the cloud represent the people, and the moon represent the monarch. The people could make or break the monarch, so if they decide to overshadow the moon, their moonlight (power) wouldn't be able to shine through, but if the people decide support the monarch, they could shine and literally become Moonlight Drawn by clouds.

He really is in a pickle between his loyalty to Yeong and his group. Throughout the episode, things would have been somewhat cleared up if only Kim Hyung would tell Yeong that the rebel group is not the one behind the attack. Yeong already has clear suspicions about Kim Hyung anyway. At this point, they are just dancing around each other waiting for someone to confirm.

Yeong can't fall asleep that night,
as usual, he'll look for a story and find the pile of storybook Ra-on has made for him ,
at 1st he is hesitant to read it cause it reminds him of Ra-on but unknowingly, he already standing there,
he opens one book, read the title and already knew the story, then he chooses another book after it,
swiping the page without paying attention, hoping to feel sleepy and then one letter falls from the book,
he open it, read it,
it's her confession . . . .

he smells the apple vinegar from it,
he remembers her father letter,
he lights up a candle and the words appear
he read it carefully,
it' from the the little mermaid,
saying goodbye so she didn't need to stab the prince's heart,
but the little mermaid also wished that the prince can understand her position and he'll seek an answer to the friend from the past,
yeong remember all the symbolism and just like what written in the last paragraph
he burns the letter

Ra-on ah! Why did you do that?! You promised you wouldn’t let go!!!
I don’t know what’s wrong with me but Moonlight has been getting me real emotional since Yeong’s confession in Ep.7. I lost count how many times I cried in this episode alone.
-When Ra-on found out she was Hong Kyung-rae’s daughter.
-When Ra-on asked her mom why didn’t she keep it hidden, no why didn’t she let her know sooner.
-When Ra-on told her mom to let her go, because Yeong was waiting and he didn’t even know anything.
-When Ra-on went back to Yeong, and he instinctively smiled at the sight of her.
-When she shed silent tears in his arms.
-When Ra-on actively initiated skinship and surprised Yeong.
-When Yeong pulled Ra-on close to him and asked her not to ask favors because he’d do everything she asked (Why didn’t you kiss her, Yeong ah? Ra-on was ready, and all fandom was ready!)
-When Ra-on kept preparing for goodbye.
-When they were on bed together and she kissed him!
-When Ra-on caressed Yeong’s face as if to memorize every details of his face before she’s gone.
-When Yeong woke up in bed alone, calling out to Ra-on.
-When Yeong found out Ra-on’s identity and she was already gone.
Heck, my dam of tears broke when Lee Juck’s voice came out during Ra-on’s backhug.
On a side note, I’m glad that we’re finally moving along to the part where the main conflicts unravel.

it's the lingering feeling when their world also became our world,
the funny things about moonlight for me are they always has good ending (except this ep) that usually make me not eager to watch every ep as fast as possible,
but when the aired time is closed, I keep thinking about it, cause the answer I need is not the short answer like
"who called they?"
"who get stabbed"
"did he died"
or the kind of cliffhanger when you need to see the scene continuation,
but I keep thinking about the plot,
"what happen if the hint about rebellion last ep happen today?"
"what yoon sung or kim Hyung will do if they meet young"
"will the fake baby get exposes?"
"will ra-on's leaves"
something that feels more in the future but still has me on my edge,
So yeah I think this is the spell of Gurumi for me

My heart was aching for Yeong when he found out the name from the Minister. And I love how that scene played out because it was so emotional. How the background music played and suddenly stopped and how they showed that Yeong momentarily went blank and had to confirm it... then of course the rain poured. ah so well done. The emotions came through once again without much dialogue and just the scene itself spoke of the emotions.
I cannot read Yeong's face when he went to see Raon and found her belongings. A million emotions and thoughts must be going through his head right now. I wonder if they will show us Yeong going through the stages of grief.

Yoon-sung asks if he can consider some of his debt of gratitude to have been relieved, and states with new conviction, “From this moment on, I will not wait, or take special care, or make requests.”Yeong understands that he’s declaring himself as a rival (nooo, what about my beautiful bromance) and says he doesn’t intend to stop Yoon-sung: “It’s when one has tried their hardest that one can resign.”
I don't know but that scene doesn't strike me as Yoon-sung declaring to be Yeong's love rival (still crossing finger for bromance to bloom), it's because we all have the knowledge of the secret that Yeong didn't, so from Yoon-sung point of view, I think he was just declaring that he'd do his outmost to protect Ra-on first even if it might hurt Yeong. I'm also glad that Yeong apologized to Yoon-sung for ostracizing him, because Yoon-sung was never at fault, and that pave ways for our bromance.
Yoon-sung admits to feeling angry with himself for always being a step late: “But this time, I must not be late. Not for me, but for you.” He urges her to leave.
Interesting that Yoon-sung blamed himself for being always a step too late, yet he was the first to discover Ra-on's secret and revealed to her that he knew. In this context, he probably meant he was a step late to save her, but I still think he refers to his feelings for Ra-on. Though I believe timing plays a role in fate, love is never about timing, it's about meeting the people you meant to meet and fall in love. So in short, it wasn't timing, it was fate, and Ra-on wasn't fated for him.
Finally, it’s Byung-yeon who places a hand on Yeong’s and refuses to let go. Yeong glares and resists, but ultimately lets him pull his arm down.
That's real friendship there, Byung-yeon gripped Yeong's hand tight, trying to stop his friend from making the biggest mistake of his life. I literally swoon at Byung-yeon's gesture.
To make the claim even more credible, the assassin declares that Hong Kyung-rae’s daughter is alive and inside the palace, preparing to revive the rebellion. Minister Dumber asks who that is, and Byung-yeon and Yeong both tense as he starts to answer.
With Ra-on leaving the palace sans explanations, Yeong's not going to think she was guilty for letting them in right?

I’m extra sad that Ra-on left behind her bracelet, because it makes their separation feel extra final; Yeong reminds her of the superstition associated with the bracelets, that as long as the two lovers keep wearing it, they are fated to reunite. So it’s a rejection of that promise to reunite, indicating that she doesn’t expect to ever see him again.
Sure the bracelet plays a role in confirming to the superstition, and I agree that she made it final to him by leaving the bracelet behind, but I find the convo where Ra-on asked if she'd come from noble family or if she hadn’t dressed as a young nobleman that day, would he still had fallen for her? The way Yeong straightforwardly affirms it makes me believe it wasn't the superstition that hold the promise of their reunion, but it's Yeong's absolute faith (like last episode's title, faith becomes fate) that they're fated to be. It doesn't matter even if she left the bracelet, because this sure isn't the first time she returned it, it only matters if Yeong's faith in them never falters. So I'm hoping all these conspiracies and front the ministers are putting won't waver Yeong's faith in Ra-on, I refuse to let him believe she was a traitor like her father!

I wish they would end up together. In an alternative universe, That's what I would want to happen.
When I was much younger, I used to imagine alternative endings for stories which I had read, and didn't like the endings.
Can we write our own version where YS and HY are in love, and together with Yeong & RO, BY, Master Jung and the Princess work together to bring down the evil Kims? They can be the Magnificent Seven.

Alternate universe sounds good, but we need a good writer, or else things might go awry, and our characters might gain consciousness, all hell will break loose!
All jokes aside, I didn't feel any chemistry between Ha-yeon and Yoon-sung, I get that they're both lonely souls suffering from unrequited love, but they've only met once, and that sure didn't light any spark for me. I do hope though, that the political marriage can be done and over with already, because right now, all we have on our hand is a dreamer prince who can't even protect his woman because he's too powerless, I'm all for him joining forces with the Pungyang Jo clan, make use of Ha-yeon and her family to strengthen his claws in the court, so he can finally make some changes in and outside of the court.

I wanted Yoon sung and ha yeon to get together too. But that ship didn't even get built.
As far as second leads goes, they are refreshing. But, I don't get their devotion to the main leads so much that one is willing to be in a loveless marriage and the other goes against his clan which he didn't do even for his childhood best friend this many times.

This episode was amazing. Like you said, I felt Ra On's pain every step of the way. I also like that the show has made this development happen in a natural way...in that we all know and see that it makes sense for her to let him go [for now....it had better be for now] in this situation because nothe only does it put herself in danger, it also puts CP in danger and more than anything, that is not something that she wants. I can't wait to see how the show resolves things because if there is one thing this show knows how to do, it's to take what we all think is gonna happen and twist it on its end.
In another note, it just makes me curious about Korean history and I guess history in general and what happened that was never written down/in between the sheets. You know, like about the kids of all the Queens and concubines...were they really their kids by blood or were they plucked from others and thus abandoning their own blood for more power and or nefarious purposes... from what I've read, queen dowagers had a lot of influence. Or what about the princes and princess who didnt become kings or queens? How did their life turn out? Or about what really happened in history and what sorta spin was put on events in history. The saying goes, the winner is the one who gets to write history...

In history, Yeong and all of his siblings died young (probably a foul play from the Andong Kim clan), Yeong's son, King Heonjong took the throne after Yeong's father, King Sunjo died. But he was only 8 at the time, so Queen Sunwon (Yeong's real mother in history, but here in this drama, she's the evil stepmother) took regency until he was old enough to rule, so the Andong Kim clan continue to reign in power at that time.

I find it hard to believe that they would do that to all his siblings when they had nothing to do with the throne. It was not uncommon for children to die young in those days.
These children were their own flesh and blood. It doesn't make any sense.

Maybe they have weak genes? I don't know about Hyomyeong's siblings, but Hyomyeong's death death definitely has to do with Andong Kim clan, it wouldn't be rumored as such if it's not true.

Gonna copy what I replied to you in the other comment section concerning this:
"I don’t doubt there were other clans vying for the same political power as the Andong Kim clan, but Pungyang Jo clan was stated to be the only true rival of the Andong Kim clan in Korean politics, and they did manage to take over the political power from Andong Kim clan when King Cheoljong died without a male heir, and Queen Sinjeong (Crown Prince Hyomyeong’s wife) took regency.
I think it makes perfect sense why Andong Kim clan would be the one killing off Crown Prince Hyomyeong. They probably thought it’d be easy to manipulate the young prince as they did with his father, even if his in-laws family was their greatest threat. But when the prince started shift things around and try to contain them, they made the first move and killed him off, plus the prince had a son whom they could control, and with Queen Sunwon (Andong Kim clan) on their side, they were basically unstoppable. I also think that it was the work of Andong Kim clan that most of the House of Yi heirs died young, they wanted the power to stay within their clan by all means, and they only want people they can control, so Crown Prince Hyomeyong was out of the question."
Kiara
October 4, 2016 at 7:21 PM
This whole thing is based on a rumor and yes it is possible that he turned on his own family.
But why would he help them? Why would he betray his own family who put him in a position of power?
He was still a teen who ruled as prince regent for only a few years (3 to 4 yrs).
Another question is, why would the Kims kill their own prince and risk handing over the power to the Jo clan? At the time, no one knew if his mother Queen Sunwon would live for a long time or not. The only reason why she ruled as Dowager queen was because she was the senior member of the royal household. After that the Kims were done for.
maryxiah
October 5, 2016 at 1:18 AM
Well, this is just my guess, the crown prince was probably disillusioned by the power play within his maternal clan. Even though they are the ones that put him into the position, but they could have different ideals about how to rule the nation, and we were told that the crown prince (despite his age) pursued various political reforms, for someone visionary like him, surely he wouldn't be satisfied being Andong Kim clan's puppet right? Or else, he wouldn't be bringing more Pungyang Jo clan into the court. For a clan that managed to be in power for almost 40 years, I'm sure Queen Sunwon wasn't their only backup plan after Crown Prince Hyomyeong.

Joseon's history was up to date and more accurate. They were first hand records unlike the other earlier eras like Goryeo etc where the history was written a few centuries later.
The Joseon historiographers would follow the king's daily routine and recorded everything he does/say (I'd be so annoyed). Everything that was going on in the country was also recorded. From state affairs to diplomatic missions etc.
If the queen adopted a son of a concubine, it was recorded. For eg, Queen In-won adopted Dong Yi's son (Yeoning) and he later became King Yeongjo (Yeong's great-grandfather).
All the children of the concubines belongs to the queen. The concubine's role was to provide heirs for the throne incase the queen couldn't produce any.
Only the crown prince resides in his own palace. The rest of the princes lived outside. The princesses were married off to noble families and they would move out of the palace and live with her husband's family. Their husbands were not allowed to hold a government position like Heo Yeom in Moon Sun. He was a talented scholar but because he married the princess, he wasn't allowed to help the king in his court.
The Winners get to write the history, that's true but it was pretty hard to do that in Joseon because the kings weren't allowed to read the historical records. (Some did anyway, like Taejo and Yeonsangun who was considered to be a tyrant).
The historiographers were also forbidden from revealing anything that was written. The penalty was death.

The separation was made legit ( so that it veers away from the Noble Idiocy route) by Raon's discovery of her roots...her identity. Because who she is the fundamental reason they can't be together as a couple and as a cross-dressing eunuch in the palace.
I am anticipating a plot twist here that could provide credence to a reunion of YoungOn. That Raon's father was after all a loyal ally of the King but was the victim of PM's evil scheming pretty much like the ploy of his minions in making it appear that the rebels were behind the attack on the CP.

I rather like that Hong Gyeong-nae is a legit rebel/traitor to the king. He seems like an upright man who had seen too much weakness from the government and wanted to do more for his countrymen. I'd watch a drama of his younger days and his doomed romance with Ra-on's mom.
I hope the King masters himself and pardons HGN's closest relatives. As part of his healing process and whatnot.

Yes Ra-on's father was a traitor. He was not on the king's side. Leading a rebellion against the government is considered to be treason against the king and country.
Her father was a nobleman from the countryside. The country bumpkins were looked down upon by those in the capital.
(For those of you who watched SFD, Lee Seong-gye was considered to be a country bumpkin even though he earnt merits for defending the borders and squashing Japanese pirates).
This kind of discrimination was also part of the rebellion. Although they were nobles, they gain little power because of where they were born.

I've been thinking of how to make YeongOn legit without Yeong having to leave the palace and give up being a Crown Prince. I'd hate to see him let go (although if he let's go of his status for his love, I do not see anything wrong with it as well), because he'd make such a wonderful great King and I'd like to see him do that with Raon by his side. The question is how... I hope the writer surprises us with something to make it happen.

I think the original plan (based on bits and pieces of Yeong's convo with Teacher Dasan) was to have her adopted by a (presumably noble) family so he can marry her later on. Of course, that plan was immediately shot down but it's sound enough for me.
Of course, she can be pardoned by the king so she can at least be royal consort. We'd be deviating too far from history, but what the hell. Give me my gooey happily ever after!
I'm not sure I want to see Yeong stepping down for love, especially when he loves his country so much. But if he does have to step down, it may be because he's no longer physically able to rule, much like that guy in Princess's Man had to be blinded so he could turn away from his revenge.
I just can't wrap my head around a completely happy ending as of now.

Me too. I can't think of a way for them to be together and still be the same person they are, him being a prince and her being a commoner and daughter of HGN. But of course, the writer can do whatever and not really follow history since it does not intend to stay close to it anyway. I hope the resolution/ending will be happy and a satisfying one.

October 4, 2016 at 4:57 AM
When I re-watched some episodes last week, I noticed Teacher Dasan said to Yeong: "The one you wanted to build a house for and find her parents for? Why did you care so much for a mere eunuch?" Teacher Dasan didn't seem to know that Yeong is in love with Ra-on until Yeong confessed that Ra-on is his lover in the guise of eunuch. So, the oh-so-great plan was never really to make Ra-on his woman (i.e. wife), but to start her life AS a woman in the right path. I think Yeong still remembered that Ra-on told him she never even had a house to begin with, so he wanted to fulfill everything he could for her. We were fooled into thinking the plan was to turn her into a potential bride, but I think Yeong only meant to turn her identity into a woman, so she can finally live as a woman, because Ra-on did tell him she never lived as a woman. Also, Ha-yeon told Yeong even though he claimed to have a lover he didn't make an effort to marry that person, so it must have been someone he couldn't marry, Yeong couldn't even deny that. Yeong didn't have a genius plan to keep Ra-on as his wife, as a woman yes, but as his official wife no, at least not yet. Maybe he thought once he becomes a king, he'd be freer to marry Ra-on because he'd have an absolute authority, and thus why he asked Ra-on to wait until he can make a nation where woman can live as woman.
Phew that was long.
Now, onto the possible happy ending, if we could just ditch the history (even though I'd really hate that), maybe we can do as you guys said, pardon Ra-on and her family for the past rebellion. And Yeong took over the throne as King Heonjong (scratch the existence of his son with Ha-yeon) and eventually rule with Ra-on as his queen.

That makes a lot of sense. That he wanted her to wait till he has the power to make her his concubine and she can live by his aide as a woman.

Thank you for the review javabeans!! I always eagerly await your and your pen-mates' detailed reviews but never commented! I decided I must these days considering how much I rely on all of your reviews and this fan community to validate my feelings and opinions in regards to dramaland!!!
Omooo, I felt a whole range of emotions watching this episode! Raon crying in the beginning, especially about Yeong waiting for her, Raon crying with her voiceover in the background asking whether he would miss her if he found out she was the famous rebel's daughter, Yeong finally hearing Raon's name in the end in conjunction with being the rebel's daughter, allll reinforced the with beautiful and almost perfect (almost perfect as there were still minor teensy places that could have been more perfect) editing and background music...omoo those moments tore through my heart! Even despite the hilarious comic relief with the princess and Minister Jang and the ever present brewing uncertainties and competition boiling underneath all of our bromances and Kim Yoo Jung's awesome sassiness and the sweet moments between Yeong and Raon...and even knowing for fifteen episodes that the royal marraige is approaching and for five episodes that Raon is the rebel's daughter, that last scene of Yeong hit so hard. Maaan this show is so good! So proud of Korean drama right now!!!

Gotta applaud the writer for putting in that the Kim clan framed the rebels in the recent attack. The impact of Raon being the rebel leader's daughter would have been less without it. It gives immediacy and proximity to Yeong.
I can forgive "noble idiocy" this time because it's not entirely noble if you think about it. Raon needs to save herself and the only way to do that is to leave. She's not merely doing it for Yeong but for her and her mom's safety as well.

I never, for a second, believed she left for fear of her own, but I think she was constantly fearing how it'd affect Yeong, his emotion, his position, and ultimately his safety. But the her inner monologue part killed me, “But, one day, even if you were to learn that I am the daughter of a traitor, will you not regret having met me? Right now, this moment—will you long for it just once?” It hits me, Ra-on's biggest fear would be Yeong stop loving her altogether after he finds out her identity.

That scene when the CP found out about Ra On's identity, bravo Show, BRAVO!
and many other scenes!
Thanks JB for the wonderful recap!

I love the backgrounds music when the crown prince realised Ra-on's name, the "iiing" become louder and the minister voice is lower like he didn't hear anything,
I also like how they played the monologue of Ra-on saying her name in flashback sounds before he calls her name,
Ra-on ah,
glad that he already called her a lot with that, but that also what makes me even sad cause she can't calls her freely with that name now,

Ooff.. the title! I've never paid attention to episode titles for other dramas but this one is an exception. Ever since JB pointed it out in one of the earlier episodes, the first thing I will look for is the title (well... duh!) because somehow the title for each episode adds more depth to what already is a deep storyline. Thank you to the (title) writer. I promise that I won't take episode titles for granted anymore.

I'm still gathering my thoughts after watching the episode, but I first want to commend Gaemi for the awesome music directing. All the songs in this episode were used in the most devastatingly heartbreaking way. I was crying like a baby when SSK's Fondly, Goodbye played as Ra-on kissed Yeong. And when the music crescendoed as she positioned her head so her forehead touched his lips? I was a goner.
I was a bit annoyed with Love is Over last week, but damn was it so painfully glorious and soul crushing during that ending scene with Yeong.
I really liked Lee Juck's Interlocking Fingers, but I felt that the message was more about promising to never let go once you meet again after a long separation rather than not breaking up at all. Which may be what Ra-on was thinking.
Now excuse me while I relisten to Fondly, Goodbye and wallow in my own pit of Moonlight-induced despair.

OUCHHHHH~~~~!!! What a bittersweet episode… Our poor Yeong and Ra On…
Things are moving quite fast and furious now.
The Queen is due anytime soon and a baby boy swap is imminent. And Yoon Sung is in the know about it so there’s a potential ticking time-bomb there waiting to happen.
That little standoff of Yeong vs Prime Minister Kim was actually quite thrilling. Although I was certain Yeong would not be so foolish as to strike down Prime Minister Kim right there and then with his sword (but lordy, I kinda wish he did!), Yeong’s face looked so darn determined that I wondered how they were going to resolve the standoff. Glad Byung Yeon stepped in and made Yeong see reason. But really, that Prime Minister Kim had it coming!
Ha Yeon… what can I say… I feel so sorry for her. She knows full well what she’s doing but that’s little comfort when you think that she basically is tying the rest of the life down to a man who does not love her. Happy to be used for her political connections and hoping against hope that one day her care and support will be appreciated and returned… that’s such a sad way to live, girl.
And as much as I dislike the fact that our YeongOn couple had to part because things were just getting too risky and dangerous for her in the Palace (so glad that both Yoon Sung and Byung Yeon are united in their decision to take her away and keep her safe!), I’m glad we still got a chance to see them spend time together to make precious memories together, even if it was bittersweet.
That good-bye kiss was heart-breakingggg~~~!!! Kim Yoo Jung just killing it with every scene. Her repressed pain and her smiles through tear-filled eyes were killing me. And it did not help at all that Yeong was blissfully clueless the whole time and happily enjoyed her sudden attentions… T_T
Also, when Ra On took some fish and placed it on Eunuch Jang’s spoonful of rice? That silent goodbye gesture gave my heart serious pangs too…
Unfortunately, at this juncture, I honestly have no idea how it can be possible for Yeong and Ra On to be happy together. Sigh… seriously how are we gonna square that circle??
Now I really can’t wait for the next episode so that I can see what happens next…

Haha, it's always interesting to hear what other people think. Thanks for sharing.
For me, I actually didn't think it was too abrupt because in the past 2 episodes since Young Master Jung entered the palace as an officer, we have already been shown 2 instances where he tried to approach the Princess. And in each instance, he grew bolder and bolder in his confidence.
1st time, he was skulking and hiding behind walls and corners and could hardly speak a word in her presence until his concern for her well-being after a fall overrode his nervousness.
2nd time, he actually managed to speak quite coherently to her when asked what he was doing at her palace gate, and I thought he did quite well in implying who he was looking for.
So this 3rd encounter came across organic and natural to me. I thought the way he went about it was actually quite realistic. He probably knew he would be too nervous to explain himself properly in time so he took the liberty to draw her picture (and I LOVE how it was when she was still chubby!), and used the words he last spoke to her to let her know that the person he meant was her. It was really clear.
And when she still tried to walk away from him, his desperation to finally make his feelings clear and known to her (which was also probably increased by the last 2 failed attempts), was enough for him to yell out "HEY!" (LOL).
This is a guy who did not start loving the Princess recently... this is a guy who has been pretty desperately in love with her for a good measure of time so I can understand and appreciate the culmination of his feelings in this episode. ^^

PPS: This episode should score another tick in the production team’s box of doing everything right - I thought it was another well-done, well-balanced episode. Lots of forward-movement but the pacing was just right - the slowing down of time and the tender stretching of moments between Yeong and Ra On were wonderfully juxtapositioned against the backdrop of events happening within the palace.
BGM spot-on again - that last scene where Yeong hears the name of Hong Gyeong Nae’s daughter…. the sudden fading out of the sounds… the slow echoey intonation of the Minister Kim repeating the name Hong Ra On… then the dead quiet… and then the slow amplification of the raindrops on the ground and his hat… I felt the devastation of Yeong’s emotions right down to the bone.
Am sure the production team will do their best to keep up the great quality, and the only thing stopping them now is probably the health and well-being of the cast and crew - seriously, they should re-think the live-shoot scheduling system. It is putting unnecessary strain on everyone involved…

Yes, and I am on tenterhooks anticipating how the writer plans to play this whole thing out. Will our YeongOn be able to have a happy ending together without having to take such drastic and self-sacrificing moves?
I fear you are probably right where their being together might entail having one or both of them having to give up a very important part of their identity.
I highly suspect it will be Yeong. As much as I appreciate the fact that he loves and values his country and takes his Crown Prince responsibilities seriously and would not lightly forsake them, there are 2 main things which probably foreshadow this sacrifice:-
1. The fact that the real Crown Prince Hyomyeong died young and did not live to sit on the throne as King in his lifetime. While the drama and the web novel it is based on may not choose to accurately follow actual history, the fortune-teller's prediction very early on in the series about Yeong dying young, is probably a big clue of things to come.
(My mind chooses to interpret the "dying young" here to mean "not able to sit at the Crown Prince's seat long", and so hold out hope for a Yeong possibly being able to live out the rest of his life somewhere away from the palace.)
2. The Kims won't allow Yeong to take the throne. They can already see that Yeong is not going to be the malleable King his father was and know that his is a serious threat to their power base. And so, even if Yeong may not want to give up the throne for the sake of his people, he may be forced to do so. Especially if the Kims make things get so out of hand that his abdication is the only way to save his country from civil war or abject destruction.
However it plays out, I have enough trust and faith in this writer and in this production team to be able to tell us a believable story flow so that while we may not necessarily like journey to the outcome, we can still accept it and eventually embrace it.
Just like how they did the Ra On silent goodbye scenes. We don't necessarily like that she has to do that, but we can accept it and embrace it because of how it is being told.

His voice and the song itself reminded me of Reply 1988 at first, but then I paid attention to the lyrics in the background, I just fell hard for it. As Javabeans commented, "I should note that even the background song is urging her not to break up: If the two of us become one again, let us never separate. Even if the harsh rain shakes us, let us not be apart. Let us not collapse." He was literally singing my heart's desire. Maybe it's because Love is Over affected me so much, that this song provided the exact comfort I needed in today's separation episode.
suegarbaby
October 4, 2016 at 5:25 AM
The Lee Juck song was played when Ra On backhugged Yeong, right?
Perhaps it's a matter of personal taste, haha. I wouldn't say I found the song to be the perfect fit for the scene (I wish they'd play Gummy or Ben's song because their vocals are so heart-rending and evocative. Plus, we are seeing things from Ra On's standpoint so a female vocalist might have made a bigger impact), but neither did I think it was too off-beat or inappropriate.
Perhaps it was the volume of the song and the pitch of the singer that was a bit too loud at certain parts (there were times when Lee Juck, while singing emotionally, also sang at loud volume), and that sort of gave us a bit of a start and brought us out of the scene a little? It all started off soft, slow and mellow and then suddenly it crescendoes in volume which can seem a little incongruous to the scene which seems to call for a quiet longing and enjoyment of 2 people?

That goodbye kiss was killer!
Kim Yoo Jung, the director and the production team nailed it completely. The whole setting, lighting, BGM made the scene evocative and moving to the hilt. This is how you do a poignant goodbye scene, people!
Haha, perhaps so... but I personally think her heart was too full of sorrow to long for other things at that point. I admired Ra On's ability to hold her nerves in earlier happier scenes with our Crown Prince (the after-rain scene comes to mind!), but not so much in this instance. She was about to leave him, and her heart was too full of conflicting emotions to probably want more than just treasure every single minute and second with him, even as he slept.

Kim Yoo-jung slaaaaaayed this episode. I felt every emotion, in every moment. To the point where I'm actually surprised our perceptive CP didn't catch on. I'd say her performance played a huge role in why I felt so at peace with Ra-on's decision this episode. As much as I wanted her to be honest with him, I also felt the gravity of the situation weighing on her & how much she just wanted to preserve the fairytale for a bit longer before 'disappearing'.
But seriously though. Can it be next week already? I don't mind going through the angst when I have happy episodes waiting for me on the other side! What am I going to do with this one?! Because I know angst of this caliber will take far more than one episode to resolve, that's for sure.
Also, I know that the show can't possible plan on having Yeong entertain the possibility of Ra-on being an active rebel. Because if it does, my already-aching heart will break into a thousand million pieces. That can't happen, Show. He knows her too well to fall for that.

I actually shared my opinion on this on another comment, but will put it here too.
"Having seen what I have seen of Yeong thus far, I have surprisingly no worries or anxieties over Yeong losing faith in Ra On or misunderstanding her whatsoever.
He has always been a smart cookie, and how he handled his friend’s BY’s ‘duplicity’ has already shown us that he is not one who reacts too recklessly. No, instead, he still chooses to trust and believe in his friend despite many suspicious incidences.
If he can do that for Byeong Yun, he can and will do the same for Ra On whom he loves and probably trusts even more.
Yeong now knows the reason why Ra On left – she is the daughter of a traitor and a rebel. I personally think his trauma and devastation at the reveal was more to do with:
1) the implications and added complications of this fact on their relationship and ability to be together (meaning: if it was difficult before, it is practically impossible now), and
2) the fact that he has to live without her by his side because of it. To realise that the happiness and joy he had been enjoying with her is suddenly something he can no longer enjoy, and the great loss and grief that knowledge brings, is devastating to the heart. It’s like suddenly hearing that your wife has died in a sudden accident when you only just held her hand and saw her smiling a few hours ago.
That kind of shock and trauma."

The amount of emotion shown in her voiceover when she was sleeping next to Yeong killed me. I cried so much at that scene paired with the beautiful OST

I love it whenever Yoo-jung do voiceover, she sounds so soft and feminine, it gives off a melancholic and sorrowful vibe at the same time.

*Whimper*
Not my puppies...!
RaOn made me cry, Yeong was being all sadly, happily ignorant, HaYeon made my heart break, YoonSeong is just... being YoonSeong, forever the second, never the first. Even Eunuch Han and ByeongYeon's plot to save her was emotional.
Just....... Waaaaaaaaaaaahhhh.............. T-T
But in any case, because Gif-master Michykdrama is stranded on some mountain somewhere, I took the liberty of creating yet another IMPcap. Click my username for gifs and pics to tide you over till friday.

No, that was a brilliant shot. Liking it is nothing weird.
It's like the hands were talking. Yeong's, resolute and firm in gripping the sword, determined to punish and mete out revenge for unabashed insolence while ByeongYeon's hand reassures him that that's the least appropriate thing he could do, ever. And so ByeongYeon's firm squeeze was telling him to let go, for Yeong's own sake, even though, yes, he knows what Yeong would have wanted to do emotionally.
So simple and all told in one shot.

I love the characterization of the five main leads. They all have charm, depth and inner conflicts. Even Hayeon, with so little screen time is so real! They're so removed from my reality but these Joseon teens are both relatable and lovable. I just want all of them to be happy.

Oh, I was so ugly watching this. Sobbing silently while scrambling for tissues, but fearing missing any moment of it because I didn't want to pause the drama. I wanted to see everything play out, so I ended up dabbing furiously at my eyes and cheeks to pick up the tears whilst also trying to peek past it to see the screen, but the dabbing wasn't strong enough and I still couldn't see past my tears. Meanwhile, the storyline kept getting sadder and fresh tears were pouring out and basically this episode turned me into a hot mess.

I've never seen a drama employ moments of absolute silence so well. They are SO different from any other drama that the extra emotional plunge into the blankness of no sound catches my heart and hurls it over the precipice - as if I am screaming silently while falling over a cliff. It makes me hold my breath because I know the angst has wrapped around me like a squeezing snake - and the emotion of the moment becomes almost too much to bear...but just in time, the sound comes back...and the music..and the raindrops...and I let my breath out. With it comes hot tears...and I am in awe. As someone said above, this amazing drama has brought me back to the beginning when I discovered dramas and was overwhelmed with joy at the magic of the world up to that point unknown. I bow in the direction of South Korea with both hands over my heart.

Although I hate to break up the best couple in drama land ever, I really believe it was time for her to leave the palace. Especially now that she knows the truth. And her making the decision to leave could not have come at a better time. Things are getting more dangerous.
And I don't think Yeong will be too angry about the truth regarding who her Dad is. He knows Ra-on. Her feelings. Her thoughts. Her character. And no matter what he may hear, I don't think he'll just let her go. It doesn't align with his character. He holds steadfast to his beliefs. I do think she should have told him first though. This is how I feel at least.

I did thought that she should have told Yeong the truth about her father at first. But then I realized how much Yeong love Ra-on and will not let her go. And I believe she know this too and that's why she had to leave without saying anything.

The worst thing man can do (other than crimes and such) is to lose the faith of another or lose faith in another. The greatest thing a man can do is seek forgiveness in that other or forgive that other. I hope Yeong comes to understand Ra-on's circumstances and judge her based on how he knows her, not by what she is known for.

"I hope Yeong comes to understand Ra-on’s circumstances and judge her based on how he knows her, not by what she is known for."
This. I hope he does not lose faith, but the situation right now is making it look really bad for Raon. I hope he comes to know the truth about the rebellion 10 yrs ago (the writer may have something cooking up about what truly happened in the past) and the recent attack on him and the truth behind the rebel group and what they want to achieve.

Having seen what I have seen of Yeong thus far, I have surprisingly no worries or anxieties over Yeong losing faith in Ra On or misunderstanding her whatsoever.
He has always been a smart cookie, and how he handled his friend's BY's 'duplicity' has already shown us that he is not one who reacts too recklessly. No, instead, he still chooses to trust and believe in his friend despite many suspicious incidences.
If he can do that for Byeong Yun, he can and will do the same for Ra On whom he loves and probably trusts even more.
Yeong now knows the reason why Ra On left - she is the daughter of a traitor and a rebel. I personally think his trauma and devastation at the reveal was more to do with
1) the implications and added complications of this fact on their relationship and ability to be together (meaning: if it was difficult before, it is practically impossible now), and
2) the fact that he has to live without her by his side because of it. To realise that the happiness and joy he had been enjoying with her is suddenly something he can no longer enjoy, and the great loss and grief that knowledge brings, is devastating to the heart. It's like suddenly hearing that your wife has died in a sudden accident when you only just held her hand and saw her smiling a few hours ago.
That kind of shock and trauma.

Gah! This episode made me cryyyy.
By far the most heartbreaking moments for me go to the ladies.
I think there was just this certain poignancy when Ra On said plaintively said, "He's waiting for me. He doesn't known anything."
That got me.
And the future crown princess (or maybe not?) -- I really liked that scene in the library. She's saying all the "right" words: I'm doing this for my family's future and This is just business, but you can see on her face that it hurts her to know she'll only ever have this much regard from the prince.
Oof!
Great episode!

Their parting was quite good, filled with love and tenderness. The one thing I really appreciate is the lack of noble idiocy in it. A lot of dramas rely heavily on noble idiocy to setup separations. At least in this drama, I didn't have to yell "Why do you have to leave?" Her leaving made perfect sense.

Well, Kim Hyung is a traitor and a spy although he's torn about it now. Yoon-sung wants Yeong to succeed, but the divulging the Kims' plots will put them (his family) in ruin. He'll disobey them as his conscience sees fit, but I don't think he has it in him to properly betray them. He might be getting there though.

No, I mean... just letting Yeong know... "heeeeeey your girlfriend is traitor's daughter. But we are all of the understanding this is through no fault of Ra On. So, let's conspire to hide her somewhere to keep her safe for the time being."
Yeong has never asked private questions of Kim hyung and Yoon Sung... He's like... trusting that when the time is right, they'll tell him. So he probably won't inquire too much if Kim Hyung and Yoon Sung approach him with a plan to save his girlfriend.

I think PBG losing his mother at such a young age has made him very sensitive to emotions. He is able to tap into that sense of loss and grief whenever he needs to emote. He is able to convey his thoughts and feelings so effectively across the screen that it grips your heart and opens the floodgates of tears....He is a very talented actor....??❤️

Only Shadows - Lyrics
Babe, will you save me a dance by the river?
Moonlight is serving us well
She makes the whole world silhouette
Makes it flicker like film on a strip
Don’t let the sadness in yet
We act as if
Somehow it’s all come and gone
Let’s pretend we’re all healed up
and happy and moved on
Tonight let the moon come shine
Let us remain you and I
Tell the sun not to rise
Before the darkness dies
Moonlight keep us steady
Give me one more night then I’m ready
To let go, to know we are only shadows.
Babe, I’m so sorry to ask
I’m ashamed but tonight
I just can’t give you up
I shackled myself to the past
and my will has gone missing
Let’s call our shadow selves out
for the evening
And watch them remember our love
Tomorrow will come
and I know they’ll be leaving
Then our time is up
Tonight let the moon come shine
Let us remain you and I
Tell the sun not to rise
before the darkness dies
Moonlight keep us steady
Give me one more night then I’m ready
To let go, to know
we are only shadows
