Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 14

There’s loads of development when it comes to our two lovebirds this hour, even if it comes wrapped in bittersweet packaging. It’s great to have two people who know how to be honest with each other, though there’s the inevitable trial and error as they face issues that can’t be easily ignored. And while Su may have found more of a place in a world that’s growing less and less new to her by the year, that same world always seems to want her dead. Good times in Goryeo.

EPISODE 14 RECAP

It’s the year 945, the second year of King Hyejong’s (formerly Crown Prince Mu’s) reign, and two years after the events of the last episode. Su is now sanggung, the highest attainable rank for a court lady, and rules over Damiwon like Court Lady Oh once did.

She’s also turned much more serious according to her rank, and writes down notes about the king’s somewhat ailing health in Hangul, which wasn’t an invention of that time. Chae-ryung, now a court lady as well, cheerily gives Su a pouch she can use on her injured knee. It’s Su’s birthday after all, though Su says the best gift is having Chae-ryung in Damiwon with her.

Chae-ryung said she was only freed from her servitude to Wook’s household on Su’s behalf, which causes Su to lose the small smile she had.

Thirteenth prince Baek-ah gives Su scented oil from Bulgaria, much to So’s ire. He apparently brought nothing back for Su from whatever journey they were on, which he claims is how it should be—the gift of his return should be enough for a court lady.

Later that night, Su hears the sound of a very ill dog howling, but it turns out to be So. Hah, he claims he made sure to not make the sound too realistic so she wouldn’t be fooled. Sure. He tries again in front of her, causing Su to fight the smile threatening to break out from his antics.

He takes her to an outdoor spot where they can best see the stars, and the two bicker over how much they each know about astronomy. After Su tells him the sad story of the Cassiopeia constellation, he tells her about how long ago, he’d seen his younger brother Jung in his mother’s lap and wished desperately for him to just disappear.

His mother had seen the look on his face and hid Jung, causing So to muse, “Perhaps she already knew that I would become a person who would kill my own brother.” Su tells him that it’s normal to think that of one’s younger siblings, and describes how she used to wish for her own sibling to disappear.

So smiles, “Are you trying to make me give up on you, or do you want me to only have eyes for you?” He describes how all his problems seem to go away whenever he sees her, so he can’t very well live without her now. “If you’re not going to come to me, don’t leave me with hope. It’s torture.”

He leans in for a kiss, but Su quickly puts a hand to his lips to stop him. Didn’t he say he would get her permission first? So chances a smile as he asks for her permission now, but he’s denied. He’s also denied from stealing a kiss, which Su preempts before he even has a chance. Aw.

So says that the king will marry her off to an old man at this rate, but Su’s not worried, since the king holds her in high regard. Foiled, So lies back to look at the stars before asking her to spend her upcoming day off with him. He has something he’ll tell her then.

Wook claims to speak for the ailing King Hyejong as he calls for a restructuring of the military at the next assembly, but So calls him out for using the king’s illness in order to become regent. Despite Wook being a high-ranking official now, So warns him against making up orders from the king, since he’ll start to make people angry.

His half-brother laughs, claiming to be impressed by how So’s handling politics now. So says he only got into politics to be able to go against Wook, since he still suspects him. Wook says he’ll heed the warning, but adds that he went a little further than he would have because it was something he couldn’t get done as “just” a high-ranking official.

King Hyejong’s health is failing him, and Chae-ryung acts suspiciously as she’s left in charge of adding herbs to the king’s bath. Ninth prince Won waits for her outside the bath, and makes a not-so-cryptic comment about having more mercury delivered for the palace’s mirrors. Whatever the scheme is, Chae-ryung seems to be in on it with him.

The king complains of his unease and inability to sleep to Wook, who looks on dispassionately as the king wraps himself in a blanket. Wook coldly advises the king to abdicate the throne to him, promising to help the king live in comfort if he does so.

Hyejong stars behaving even more erratically the next day as he sends his very young daughter off to be married. She can’t even have reached puberty at the age she’s at, and cries for her father not to send her away—and to the Khitan, no less.

In the king’s warped mind, he believes the marriage will provide a useful alliance for him in the future, so he won’t hear his daughter’s pleas. So does, however, since her cries remind him of himself when he was that age, and how he’d cried for his mother when she’d tied him to the top of the palace gates and… had archers use him for flaming arrow target practice? What the hell, lady?

So tries to step in on the little girl’s behalf, but the king has gone stark raving mad. That’s when he turns to So and asks if he’ll marry the princess and protect him. Oh no.

As promised, Su waits for So on her day off, adorned in silk clothes and the hairpin he once gifted her. So notices the hairpin immediately, and carefully masks his inner turmoil as he puts on a smile for her. But when Su reminds him that he said he had something to say to her, So plays dumb and says he can’t remember what it was.

He pokes fun at her for having high expectations for what he was going to say, and Su does her best to hide her disappointment. Since So feels bad, he promises to make it up to her, which includes a boat ride out on the water. Noticing her tight grip on the boat’s edges, he tips the boat to and fro as a joke, unaware of just how much Su fears falling into the water.

She asks him if this is his boat, and he claims he brought it to the palace when he was younger. She scoffs a bit at him saying the boat is his favorite thing in the palace since she never sees him in it, to which he replies, “Because I like it too much.” Afraid that he’d come to like it too much and not want to leave the palace because of it, he didn’t use the boat on purpose. I’m guessing this is less about the boat and more about a metaphor for their relationship.

Su looks thoughtful for a moment before she says, “I was thinking about what it must be like to turn away from something you like. I also thought that it’s a relief you don’t have to do that anymore.” The meaning behind her words has So feeling guilty, and he apologizes for “forgetting” what he wanted to say to her.

We find out later that So has made the decision to marry the king’s young daughter in order to help protect his older brother. That way, he’ll make his evil mother and the Shinju clan believe he’s next in line for the throne, which will enable him to deflect some of the attacks aimed at the king.

Astronomer Choi praises him for his political calculations on this one, even though So’s not happy about the decision. “Am I back to being a dog on a leash to protect my brother?” he asks. “Is this my destiny? I am sick and tired of having to turn my back on the things I like.”

When he asks how he can free himself from such a situation, Astronomer Choi seems to jokingly imply that he could revolt. But in the end, he can only thank So for helping to protect the king in his hour of need.

The king, back to being sane for the moment, knows that Wook is only reading him appeals for the fourth prince to leave the palace because Wook wants to clear his own path to the throne. Wook claims that he only said what he said out of loyalty, but the king knows better than to buy it—he does plan on sharing his burden with one of his brothers, but it’s clear it won’t be Wook.

It’s So who comes to visit, which is when the king declares that So will be marrying his daughter. But since she’s too young to have children, he’s agreed that So can make her his second wife only. The king tells Wook that he plans on giving the throne to So, who is not only his brother, but also his son-in-law.

Wook pretends to accept this information with a congenial smile, but he can’t resist the pointed barb at So: “I hope there aren’t any girls crying over losing such a good man for a husband.” Oooh.

Su fashions modern face masks for both fourteenth prince Jung and tenth prince Eun’s wife, but afterward, Eun takes issue with how much Jung compliments his wife on her skin. She leaves in a huff after he compares her to Su (again), and Su chastises him for acting that way toward a wife who everyone knows he likes. It’s been three years and he still treats her like she has cooties?

Thanks to Eun’s big mouth, Su finds out about So’s impending marriage and spends the evening brooding. So knows she’s heard the second he sees her face, but he doesn’t attempt to shift the blame. She can hate him all she wants.

He reminds her that he promised to take her out of the palace and set her free, but now, he won’t be able to keep to his word. “Are you not even going to give me an excuse?” Su asks dejectedly. So knows that he can’t give her a reason for breaking her trust, so he’s not going to try. All Su can do is half-heartedly congratulate him, even as tears fall from her eyes.

Baek-ah delivers a letter from So to Su, claiming that this is So’s excuse. The poem reads, “Walking until the water’s edge, I sit and watch as clouds rise up and appear.” It’s from “Villa on Zhongnan Mountain” by Chinese poet Wang Wei, and Su sighs that she didn’t know he could write so well, adding that there’s a lot she doesn’t know about him.

Su tries to parse out the poem excerpt as she remembers what So said about wanting her to experience the same freedom he did when he was an ambassador, and how being king would mean nothing to him if he didn’t have her. The latter part of the voiceover continues as So keeps vigil at his sick brother’s bedside.

She attempts to trace over his characters with her own, mimicking his handwriting as best she can. She repeats the poem over and over with tears in her eyes as So gets married in another part of the palace.

Jung pays a visit to his mother in a nearby temple, only to find her with a bearded and somewhat bedraggled third prince Yo. Of course he’s alive. No one’s ever died from falling off a cliff in sageuk.

The white-haired Queen Sinmyeongsunseong is overjoyed at her son’s re-emergence, though he’s had to stay in hiding because of his current status as a traitor. Jung tells his older brother that he’ll ask the king to pardon and reinstate Yo, but even Yo knows how foolish an idea that is when he’s known for trying to steal the throne.

Yo already knows about the wedding to take place between So and the king’s daughter, which has raised suspicions that the king plans to abdicate to So. Jung admits that he’s against So taking the throne, but he won’t become a traitor to stop him. That’s when Yo claims that it isn’t treason if you win. (Isn’t it?)

Still, Jung says that he’ll stand by the king, despite Yo telling him that the king has gone mad. Does he want to leave Goryeo in the hands of a mad king, or any person a mad king leaves in power?

That night, Jung sneaks into the palace despite the king closing it off to any and all outsiders. So sees this and gives chase with a contingent of guards, eventually ending up at Su’s quarters. They’ve somehow deduced that this is the only room Jung could be in, but Su firmly forbids them from entering, using her high rank as the reason they cannot enter.

When So decides to ignore her order and search the room himself, Su threatens to use her hairpin to pierce her own throat with if he takes one step further. Claiming that she can’t suffer the disgrace of having him enter her room (as she’s unmarried), she’d rather die.

She further adds that if So wants to gain entry, he’ll have to bring an order from the king to do so. So asks if she’s sure that no one’s in her room, and she flatly answers that she’s sure, and scratches her neck with the hairpin for added effect.

So and his men are forced to leave, and Su collapses once she gets back into her room. Jung is hiding there after all, and worries over her scratch—was she really going to stab herself with her hairpin? Su says that she didn’t have much of a choice, since she wants to avoid any conflict between the princes.

Jung asks her which side she’d take if the princes were ever to fight each other, prompting Su to answer that she’d have no reason to take anyone’s side. He reminds her that they can’t go back to the days where they were all friends, and that she’ll have to choose a side soon.

“Even so,” Su replies, “I don’t think I will be able to take anyone’s side, because I do not wish for anyone to get hurt. I’m going to make sure that happens.” Jung can’t help but smile at her when she eventually falls asleep, and even tucks her in just to be adorable.

So confronts Su the next day, and forcefully drags her out of Damiwon to ask her if Jung was in her room. Despite her claiming that didn’t happen, So knows better, and demands an explanation. Su asks him to do some explaining to her then, and he can start with his marriage.

He tells her that he had to save the king’s daughter from becoming a hostage to the Khitan, and marrying her was the only option he had. Su gets teary-eyed as she tells him that he should’ve just said that from the beginning, but says he couldn’t because he didn’t know what he could say to her.

He knows she hates the idea of multiple wives, and all his attempts to avoid that happening have now amounted to nothing. What could he have said to her? At least Su is honest in response, as she admits that Jung was in her room last night, though for reasons she claims are innocuous.

So wants her to make a promise not to lie again, but Su asks what she should do if there’s something neither of them want to admit. In that case, So says, she should just admit she doesn’t want to say whatever it is, because he hates liars the most. In return, he promises not to lie to her either.

“Are you not angry anymore?” he ventures carefully, and Su shakes her head. She asks if he regrets getting married (we only saw a glimpse of the ceremony earlier), and he shakes his head as he replies that he doesn’t. He did what he had to do to protect the king, and the princess was sent away to a temple, just as the king promised.

So still proves that he’s still clueless when it comes to Su’s feelings when he asks if the man she claimed to love before was actually Jung. Hah. She dispels that thought but fails to tell him who it was, and he doesn’t press the issue either.

She confronts him over what he “forgot” to tell her in the boat, knowing that he didn’t actually forget. In answer, he closes the distance between them as he says, “I love you.” Su smiles and closes the distance even further by leaning up to kiss him. “Next time, don’t forget it.”

So smiles, grabs her around the waist, and pulls her in. Holding her face, he leans in for a real kiss, which she finally accepts and reciprocates. Huzzah!

While Baek-ah just so happens to be thinking about Woo-hee, she magically appears before him. “Is this a dream?” he wonders, as Woo-hee admits that she’s thought of him during the time they’ve been apart. He pulls her into an embrace, happy to have her back.

Won arranges a meeting between Wook and Yo, who comes into the palace in disguise. Yo reveals that Wook was the one who ordered Won to use mercury in Damiwon, which is presumably why the king is currently ill, and commends his half-brother for being so coldhearted.

Cut to: Yo bringing an army to the gates of the palace to begin his revolt. (I know.) Jung prepares to go out to face his brother in order to protect the king, but his mother tells him to kill her first—she can’t bear to see her sons fighting against each other. Unless Jung wants to kill his own mother, he can’t leave.

From within the palace, Su and Chae-ryung have a non-reaction to hearing the sound of screaming outside. The king steps out of his bath coughing blood, and Chae-ryung hightails it out of there before Yo’s soldiers can arrive to drag Su away from the ailing king.

King Hyejong recognizes Yo when he struts into the room and begs for his life, but Yo coldly pries his hand away. Yo almost seems to pity his brother, but then he pushes him into the bath.

The king flounders as he drowns in what can only be three feet of water, but Yo just watches dispassionately. Su loses her ability to stand once the king goes still, floating face down in the water. He’s dead.

So and Astronomer Choi arrive too late to save him, but the sight of the king floating in the water fills So with murderous rage. He cuts through the remaining soldiers to reach the bath as Astronomer Choi goes into the water to retrieve the king. He cries for him to open his eyes again as the realization of his death hits him, causing everyone else to stop fighting.

Yo is quick to claim that he didn’t come here in full battle regalia to kill the king—he was already dying from the poison Su was putting in his bath. Su’s eyes widen at this, but Won throws her to the ground as he claims that mercury was discovered in the bathwater, and only she was allowed to administer to the king’s baths.

Yo gives So a choice: He can stay loyal to the dead king and die with Su, or join him and save her life. But he’ll keep Su’s crime of regicide in his back pocket should he ever need it, which seems to be his way of keeping So in check.

So strikes at Yo, and the two lock blades as So demands that he let Su go. Yo has Won hold a sword against Su’s neck as he tells So, “Wolves tend to devote themselves to one female until death. And you are the same as a beast. Choose. Is it Hae Su, or the dead king?”

COMMENTS

How is this even a viable choice So has to make? There are few things more annoying than villains providing an ultimatum by using the heroine as bait, but this whole situation is really something else. Considering that Yo’s been branded a traitor for storming the palace with an army to kill the man who was his father, how did he think this was going to work out? He doesn’t honestly think that he can storm the palace again and mystically claim that someone else committed regicide, can he?

The sad thing is, I think he does think that, and he’ll likely get away with it for no other reason than it being in the script. There’s no reason for the mercury plot to have existed at all if the king was going to die of drowning anyway—at that point, Yo could’ve just held him under those three inches of water until he stopped breathing. I can understand that the point was (maybe) to make Su seem culpable, but it’s not as though nobody saw Yo and his army come into the palace. It’d be different if Yo was just paying a friendly visit to his brother, but after being branded a traitor, who would honestly believe that Su was the one who would kill the king, as opposed to the guy who came back from the dead after trying to kill the last king?

Time skips are a given in sageuk when ground needs to be covered, but this is the second time Moon Lovers has been unable to use a time skip effectively—we get the illusion that time has passed, but nothing changes. We resumed exactly where we were before with the character relationships, leaving us to wonder if Su spent two years denying So’s advances, and why that only changed in the span of this single episode. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that nothing major happened offscreen (aside from Su getting a frankly insane promotion), but it only served to create a disconnect between what we thought we knew about these characters and what was actually happening before us.

It’s not all doom and gloom though, since I found Su and So’s honesty with each other to be quite refreshing, even if the circumstances surrounding their honest conversation were bizarre. We completely rushed through So’s marriage to a child, and though we understood his reasoning behind it, it’s hard to see what impact that had on the story when the king passed so quickly afterward. Also, was no one even remotely concerned about the king going absolutely mad? Was So not even a little suspicious that something horrible was going on behind the scenes to make his previously normal-seeming brother into a lunatic?

I guess we just have to take it on faith that everyone thought this progression of events was normal for the king, which would be easier to buy if we were dealing only with people from this time period. But Su, who could recognize illnesses with one glance and prescribe the perfect ye olde herbs to remedy them, has less of an excuse for standing idly by while the king’s condition went south. She knew he had eczema, which everyone else assumed was a life-threatening condition, but she’d know better than anybody that his skin condition wouldn’t cause madness. Or maybe she wouldn’t, and I’m giving her too much credit. Just throw us a bone, Su—we want to like you, but you’ve got to help us out a little.

This show is giving me whiplash. Two time jumps in as many episodes? I get the necessity of it, but ugh! It could have been handled much better, and I agree, there seems to be no evolution in the character relationships. And mercury poisoning can mess with your brain. It's called heavy metal poisoning. If the king has been taking a bath a day (or less) for a year or so, it could make him go insane. But the out of left field nature of this (how did Won get Chae-ryung to do this? Why would she do this?) doesn't explain it well. Either poor writing or poor editing or both.

I did like the improvement between So and Su's relationship, though, the only good aspect of the episode for me. I love his confession. And that's about all.

When I think about how much I was excited for this show and what it's turned out to be I feel so sad. I'll stick with it until the end because So and Su are the only things that are really keeping me interested.

In episode where YH whipped Chae-ryung, I vaguely remember there was a short but sharp eye contact between Won and Chae-ryung when she walked toward the princes. For a short moment, I guessed there was relationship between those two. but then i forgot it. now, it seems that eye contact might have significance to Chae-ryung betrayal. In my opinion, Chae-ryung did have attraction or some kind of romance thing with 9th prince before and it became the tool for 9th prince to use her in Wook evil plan.

Yeah, it was strongly implied way back then that Chae-ryung and Won had some kind of dealings.

I miss W's style of fast forwarding in Kang Chul's world. The stop motion movement.

Or just flashes of moments for the characters during the 2 years span would've suffice.

Also, BaekAh's weird sudden reunion with Won Hee. They just... don't mix with this episode's movement. It was sudden, it was weird, it was unnecessary (I ship them too, and Baek Ah is adorbs, but come on. Let him shine in different light)

I feel the same about Baek Ah couple. Was even thinking why they are there in the story at all.

At least they are so pretty to look at and I would love to see Baek Ah in other roles.

I recommend you watch the SBS version, it has BaeAh's scene in the right place and doesn't feel so sudden as the international version. I thought this scene in the SBS version was very beautifully done....

Not much difference to me..

Overall storyline wise, this particular scene of Baek-Ah with Woo-hee scene had almost no impact to the main storyline (not like there's a pre or post happening that led to their meeting)

So by inserting it in the front (international version) or at the mid-back 3/4 of the ep makes very little difference..

She couldn't read hanja in the beginning, because modern Koreans don't use hanjas anymore. She must have learned it while she was in Goryeo, wish they would show that part though. Her stroke seems fine to me, her writing's actually really pretty!

I literally screamed at my screen during So's flashback on being tied and shot with fiery arrow. If I hate Queen SMS before, now I hate her with a fiery passion of a thousand suns. Can the evil queen be more evil? She has no chance of redemption. Her ending should be horrible death by being crushed by a concrete pillar (or massive stone).

Did anyone notice how sharp LJK's jaw when he was kissing Su? Sorry IU, I was too busy appreciating the wonder that is Jun Ki's razor sharp jaw to actually pay any attention to the kiss. Maybe the kiss scene was actually intended to highlight the glorious jawline?

I also noticed that Wook has started to sport eyeliner, despite being not so sharp. I take that as an indicator that he's going all out evil this episode forward. On the other note, Wook should be taking lessons from Yo on how to master the art of applying evilliner. Gotta to do it right man, if you want to be a flawless bad-ass.

Su looks mature this episode, unlike her wide eyed personality in the first 10 episodes. Acting wise, I like IU more when she acts like this. It feels more real, unlike in the fist 10 episodes when she looks so unconvincing with the constant wide eyes. However, her acting in 11 was the best, to the point that her character can carry the episode without the need for LJK

haha, i thought I am the only one who realize they put eyeliner on Wook. it's annoying actually, because it feels like they need to outline how cruel now his character is, and not from the act of the actor itself. and since KHN acting is mostly producing from his intense eye contact (that microexpression thingy) , the eyeliner definitely ruins it.

Can someone explain what Wook meant by when he told his mother that all of this is because of Hae So?

Did he mean he will support Yo and rebel against king because tht is the only way to have some hope to get back together with HS??? BEcause if So becomes king he will surely marry HS?

But he didn't really have a choice right? To save his family, it was must that he supports Yo

Despite of my overjoy watching the mutual kiss between Wang So & Hae Soo.. somehow i feel a little pushed reasoning to every WS act such as:
1. He killed Wang Yo..and suddenly he cries like a baby..
I think this scene is made for excuses to all audiences that he's actually "have to" and so...sooo sorry for it, well i know this is drama ,but i don't think this scene is necessary
Even WS killed WY, we can accepted it without WS need to cry and all

2. WS married his niece
We can easily understand if he have to marry her to protect the king, without making the scenario that his niece is supposed to be sent to Kitan and that crying scene ...this scene is obviously made to make "just" for WS act so it's shown that he's tooooo softy and must help that little girl.
Can they just make it like a conference meeting where there's a clan that suggested they sent the king's daughter to Kitan, then WS objected. that's when the king ask are you going to protect us then?
It's natural in those era for political marriage, but is it really necessary to showed that the little girl is sent to the temple? (this is made to make the audience believe that the marriage is really only on paper)

Well.., i feel bad for HS , she really didn't see that coming. betrayal from ChaeRyung.. that's a stab in the back, everyone!

But i agree on the point that HS is coming from the future, how come she can't see that eczema doesn't make hallucination? and the king stab one of the maid becoz of it. i wonder...

Overall this episode is satisfying.. yeaa... i watch this only for LJK (i won't lie)

But i really can't comprehend a kid with scar in face & heart, who has been closed to everyone, and which finally have HS to share his feeling, could have another alter personality which is like trying to steal kisses ?? and sometimes act like a mere player? this makes it kinda less interesting

^_^

I don't mind if So forcefully kissed Suu, it fits his character better. he's supposed to be dominant, selfish character but still with a good heart. but yes, less cry please. you will be a tyrant, just hold that tears, man.

if this drama is going to end in tragedy and destruction in just 6 more episodes, then please at least give your OTP some more good smoochies before everything goes pear-shaped for them.

I thought I was the only one who was was completely captivated when I said he tried hid best not to marry because she doesn't like multiple wives. That's honesty so sweet, considering how it was normal back then. And their conversation about bring honest was so significant because it should hoe they were both mutually trying to work out their relationship. LJKs expression are so natural, and it was adorable how he was so excited when Hae so gave him the unexpected kiss. I can now officially say he's signature move is pulling her towards him.

I might be the minority here, but I enjoyed every single minute of this episode. I think it might be one of the best one.
Now onto some of the controversies:
Time skip: I did not see any problem or confusion from it. First of all, SH is trying to fit 4 different ruling periods (from Taejo to Gwangjong) into 20 episodes, there will definitely bound to have some time-skip unless the production team want to drag the series out to 50 eps. Hyejong ruled Goryeo for 2 years. During that time, he appointed Su as the highest court lady and So continued to pursue her for the past 2 years while she is gradually getting over Wook and warming up to So (what else would there be beside the endless pursuit.) This was all implied in the first 10 minutes or so of the episode so I don't get what kind of character development some of the commentors were expecting when in the previous episodes some complained that the relationship development between SuSo was taking too long.

Su character and her role: to some, she is meek and does not speak up for herself. To me, she is very adaptable to her environment. She knows that she is living in Goryeo, a time period where a mere servant life is insignificant compared to that of a noble, one wrong word or action and she could be thrown in jail (episode 11) or get killed. How would a "21st century" feminist attitude served her in the 11th century Goryeo (human equal right wasn't even invented) beside landing her into deeper water than she was already in? Even in the 21st century, she was just a normal makeup artist, she had the knowledge of every normal average female, expecting her to be cunning and knowledgeable about everything (i.e. conditions of eczema) is too much. I didn't even know what eczema was until SH.

Wang Yo marched into the palace: Wang Yo didn't just freely marched into the palace unnoticed, people lets him. He has the support of his mother and her very powerful family, Wang Won (his family is powerful in their own right), and Wang Wook who is, by now, basically acted as the prince regent for Wang Mu. With all of those powerful allies, who would dare stop his path? Unless they want to die like those palace guards and Wang Mu. And when he is king, he can frame whoever he want (Su). No one would dare go against a king's decrees.

I agree but have to disagree! haha actually I liked the episodes, and didnt mind the time jump, Ive seen the original and I know we have another time jump coming, but what I really dislike is no voiceover for Soo.He had one after the time jump when Lady Hae died. It gives for insight for our heroine and we can understand her and love her. Thanks to IU and her acting I get her development, she is adapting and accepting but a voiceover could gives a quick summary of important character development relationships that we need to know :) Besides that I agree with you completely!

Soo: What kind of place is the palace?
So: A place that’s hard to enter and even harder to leave. You end up dying if you trust anyone. You’ll live if you remain alert and wary of those closest to you.
Soo: Well… then it seems like you don’t know everything either.

Can we take a moment to appreciate how So’s every single word comes to live, even more clearly in this episode? And how clueless Soo was to think that So didn’t know everything. Instead, he knows even better than those who have lived in the palace for their lifetime.

“A palace is hard to enter.”
We can see the struggle So had whether it was to have legal permission to stay in the palace or to get accepted by his family.

“A palace is even harder to leave.”
Once Soo entered the palace, it’s impossible for her to leave, even when Wook and So planned to take her out of palace, it just didn’t work. So had been dreaming of getting out of the palace and living in peace (with Soo), but now that he gets trapped in the dirty game of his brothers, it would sadly never happen.

“You end up dying if you trust anyone. You’ll live if you remain alert and wary of those closest to you.”
Soo didn’t leave w/ Lady Oh because he trusted Wook, and she ended up almost dying, only to have Lady Oh dying in her place. Yo almost died because he trusted Wook. Moo eventually died because he trusted Wook. And Soo ends up being accused of poisoning Moo (and can really die anytime now) for trusting Chaeryoung.

I look forward to see how So’s trust in Soo and Baekah will take toll on him (not that I want it to happen) because despite of his own precaution, he seems to put his full trust on both of them and here we already see how Soo is used as So’s Achilles’ heel. The only one who lives up to this principle is Wook. He’s smart to not trust anyone completely, and thus I can expect to see him living a long life, safely lurking as a villain in the shadow.

Wow, nice thought!
Basically don't trust 8th prince Wook and his twisted plot. When Wook ask Won to supply Chae ryung with mercury, I don't think he even care that Su will be the one who took the blame regardless Yo barging into the palace and somehow push CP drown to death

Yes, all does seem to revolve around Wook, doesn't it? I've said before, he's the chess master, he puts people as his pawn and plays them all in his scenario w/o them realizing even a bit. Yes, he's not stupid to not know that Soo would be the one to get blamed for whatever happened to the King. I don't buy him telling his family that he did it for Soo. Still playing the blame card it seemed.

I don't believe Wook mercury plan was intended to frame Suu. the plan was to make Mu's ill worse,in order to be able to blackmail him and point him as successor. Framing Suu won't give any advantage nor purpose on his plan. But since he's not considering Yo come back, this plan later used by Yo as a way to suppress Wang So.

Side note: if only Wook play his joker card a little bit longer as Mu trusted people instead of just went abrupt threatening him, I bet Mu will voluntarily given him approval.

I honestly wonder how drunk the music director was, to think it was a good idea to put that in a sageuk.

It keeps going "Say yes, say yes" and all I can think is "why did no one have the sense to SAY NO to this horrid excuse of a song?" I don't need to associate Lee Jun-ki's face with that!

0

I never regret watching SBS raw first, they (almost) never fail me in the music department like the int version does. It was like when they realized they had problems with the music editing, they hired a new one and that one was like, "WTH is this? This' supposed to be sad scene, why you put this happy song here? Oh okay that stargazing scene we can use SAY YES but please omit that rap part!!"

I'm grateful they found a right one, even if it was a bit too late.

How can So still not know that Wook is The Guy? He knew Wook & So exchanging poems back then. I think Wook has shown enough jealousy & obsessiveness on Soo. And in 3years or so, there are no rumors whatsoever abt the eight prince & his late wife's cousin? I'm wondering if So is taking relationship things simple (which i think is a bit inconsistent cos i think he's perceptive abt everything else), he's too focused on his job to listen to gossip, or it is a plot device to add an extra blow to him when he finds out later in the coming war of throne.

I do think So is a touch dense in his reasoning, but most of the people who know about Su/Wook are in Wook's circle and not likely to spill to So.

The only one close to So who does know Su and Wook had a thing, was Baek-ah - and since he was in love with his brother's wife himself and is now friends with Su, I can see how he wouldn't tell either.

Required fields are marked *

So didn't know about the romantic poem Wook gave to Soo, and what he got to see was her comical emoticon as a reply to Wook, so it makes sense that he would assume they were just relatives exchanging poem.

So is pretty oblivious when it comes to social relationship, he admitted it himself to Baekah. We as audience know how far Wook-Soo relationship is, and Baekah also knows because he read the romantic poem Wook gave to Soo, but all other princes are also clueless about Wook-Soo or even So-Soo relationship, so it's safe to say that So is clueless as well.

and yes, this is definitely the plot device if they follow the original.

I was emotionally drained after watching this eps, which is funny because it's not exactly about the events in this eps itself but the implication it has for the upcoming episodes and eventually the ending. I think I was still holding on a thin string of hope that it wouldn't follow the original pathway, but too many foreshadowings in this eps to be ignored.

I can't see So-Soo's beautiful moments in the same way as before; they simply add salt on the wound, knowing that their doomed love journey in on the way of making. It's really tragic because they have such a good foundation to begin with; they can make a storyline of So-Soo with different ending and I will definitely, more than happy to buy it.

Thanks for the recap, Heads!

We are back to a better ep again. The aspects from the original that got adapted and I liked were the poem and calligraphy copying, the honesty talk between So-Su, and the concealing of Jung being in Su's room (though the original had more build-up and elaboration for these scenes). The boat ride as well though that was a bit brief.

I'm glad that So-Su finally got their feelings out in the open, especially Su, who finally seems to realize after two years who's truly in her heart. So does seem quite clueless about her love, first guessing BA and now Jung. LOL I love that he got out the words ILY, and then his reaction when Su kissed him. It's like this incredible suspension of belief yet overwhelming joy all at the same time for having his feelings reciprocated.

I knew that CR would be the one in on the plot quite early on, and now I can finally talk about it cuz it's not a spoiler anymore. It was obvious to me that she would be like Yu Tan in the original. So, her association with Won was no surprise to me. I was surprised that Wook was behind the mercury plotting though, considering he should know full well that Su would be immediately implicated.

Eun should have realized his feelings for SD by now! Gosh, what does a woman gotta do when she is already so completely devoted to you?

I liked that Jung was concerned about Su and the little time they got to spend together. At least he now knows that Su is willing to put her life on the line for these bros.

Wook... I'm just so disappointed that he's vying for the throne and is still deluded into thinking that Su is one of the reasons he wants to go through with this.

I knew historically that So married his niece, but didn't know it would come earlier than the marriage with YH since I didn't look up the historical dates. But if Su can accept his explanation for guarding the girl and protecting the king, then I guess it doesn't impede this couple right now.

Yo being alive is no surprise. I guess the time skip conveniently fits with history with Moo only reigning for two years. Now, I wonder if we'll do another jump cuz Yo also only served for two years.

Anyway, ending scene was strong as So has to make yet another tough decision. Of course, he won't be able to not save Su. But man, this guy's had a rough childhood (target practice?! Dang, that's cold, Mom) and adulthood. What else does he need to face before becoming king?!

Hae Soo poisoning King's bath just an extra excuse, if his revolt fail.
A bit disappointed to Jung lately. How he take distance with So? Did he really blamehis mother and brother Yo tragedy to So? That's really childish. Grown up, bro.

As an explanation of the scene where So as a kid is tied up and Queen Yoo signals the archers to fire:

I read some time ago that this scene was in a draft script in the first four episodes. Apparently, So was being held hostage so Taejo/Yoo's forces would not attack, but Yoo ordered the attack anyway. Crown Prince Mu saved him - this was the incident, not the scarring incident, that So was referring to when he said the CP once saved his life and he owed him.

Now wouldn't the scene of So agreeing to protect Mu's daughter have carried a lot more dramatic weight if we had been able to actually see this happen?

I think some people just see this as Yoo trying to proactively kill her son, but the scene's significance is she just didn't care enough about him to save him at the expense of the battle. Not a great deal of difference, perhaps, but a difference nonetheless.

They definitely had filmed a lot more stuff, like u said, and i agree too, its not the scriptwriter problem.. (like some scenes, if one had watched both version, u can see some scenes got extended version, which makes me think how many unseen scene that were removed totally, not because its unsuitable but because of the lack of time to air..)

i dont understand.. maybe idk broadcasting, production and so on, so i think in a simple way.. but since u had more material on hand than the length of the entire show.. wouldnt it be more reasonable to extend the ep?

though s.korea had a short history of pre-production drama (started with DOTS?) i think this show should be ranked as the worse pre-production show in korean drama history (2 versions seriously lols)

i find it a pity especially for those actors that really put up a good show for it..

They should make his name public- the editor.. 'm curious to knwo what other dramas has this team edited

0

haha no idea about that.. maybe some sudden last minute restriction or changes and ta-da!! i know things keep changing and nobody can say for certain especially when u are not the only sole decision maker..

but one thing for sure, whatever decision made, there would be a result.. whatever was their choices back then and what decision or difficulty it met, as of now its pretty obvious the main problem or scapegoat lies with the editing haha..

Korea has many pre-production drama before DOTS, but none has got the phenominal popularity like DOTS. Most pre-production either flopped so hard or just break-even so people were reluctant and it was kinda unknown.

But with DOTS breakout, more pre-production is on trial, but none has meet the standard

@anh

Very interesting! I thought pre-produced was a recent phenomenon. But it's interesting to know they tried in the past. Even when I look back on DOTS, I was super swept up on that story, I could still see a lot of the plotting problems. Their editing was definitely better, but essentially there's the same problem with these 2 shows. Amazing OTP relationship development, we're completely in love with these two characters, and then the background plotting is laughable. Like that American gangster story line in DOTS? DO NOT GET ME STARTED. WTH WAS THAT

0

Oh i see, so DOTS wasnt the first pre-production drama for korea..

I was under the impression all along that it was haha.. ok maybe its the first successful pre-production drama (my selective reading i guess)

I agree different format got its advantage/disadvantage.. Its the editing haha..

Oh this makes so much more sense in context. Why couldn't they have cut some unimportant stuff to fit this in? It's important that we know why So's loyalty to Mu is this deep, and if they'd put this in... we would? Argh this editing just makes me angry.

Also Mu is the best prince in Taejo's brood. Period. I miss him already, why did he have to go by mercury poisoning/drowning? :(

Required fields are marked *

Ikr? Mu was one of my favorites even without this scene, but I think his death would have been even more poignant if we knew this about him. He was a good man born into an impossible situation. The good people - Lady Hae, Lady Oh, Mu -don't last long in Goryeo.

0
10
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's true, because they're not vicious enough to ensure their survival. Lady Hae was magnanimous enough to ask for Su's entry into Wook's family after her death, Court Lady Oh was willing to stay as not even a concubine, but a mere court lady for Taejo, and Mu, Mu that sweetheart trying his best to rule and be a good brother but overridden every single by birth circumstances that he couldn't even control.

But it's also very accurate historically because good people hardly ever make good rulers. So's rage over Mu's death will definitely play a part in the shaping of his rule as emperor, but still... my poor Mu :(

Required fields are marked *

I wished that they had really gone and shown how Mu's sickness would've affected the whole palace, most especially his siblings and those close to him. It felt like everyone else wasn't particularly affected by what was happening to him - he was pretty well-liked, so how would they not know or be changed by his descent into madness? I was disappointed that they didn't dig deeper into that.

0
8
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm thinking that Yeon-hwa doesn't really seem to mind, since Wook is effectively prince regent in Mu's steed, and like, girl wants power. If her blood brother gets the throne she gets to be the highest ranked princess.

The rest of the brothers though, I don't really get either? Maybe they've been told that he's been stressed to the point to illness? Wook bought the imperial physicians off? They think Mu will be fine on his own? Bad writing? I don't know. But you're right, it's such a disappointment they didn't expound much on this bit.

0

I think he was just too obviously dad's favorite - Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat, anyone? Plus much older than the rest, away at battles a lot, and then the ambitious mother factor obviously plays a role, and him without a strong maternal clan.

0

@kumoiwa: I'm a sucker for tragedy, lol, so it's something that I was rather...eager to see. But I don't think others were as interested in seeing it, haha. It just felt like such a waste that his illness seemed more isolated than it should've been. It's not likely that the scene where he went mad in front of his daughter was one of his first bouts of madness; it's highly likely that others would've been caught in the crossfire. I also definitely wanted to see more of an effect on his brothers, particularly So. They focused too much on the political effects of his sickness, so they ended up neglecting the personal aspect of it, which weakens its emotional impact upon viewers.

I also think that Mu's decline was definitely something that Soo should've been more concerned about, not just because he'd been kind to her (though of course that's an important part of it), but also in relation to So. Sure, she knows that historically, So ends up having a long reign - but what kind of quality of life did he live/will end up living? The fates may play in his favor, but it doesn't mean he'll be living well or easily. It's also something else entirely to lose someone over a course of time, rather than quickly, like what happened to Lady Hae or Lady Oh.

I guess this pretty much goes back to ML's poor usage of time skips. We're simply told that time has passed, but we don't see much of the effects of the passage of time on the characters + their relationships. A lot can change in a few days or a week, how much more in two years?

0

@Barbrey: Hm, idk. Even though he was dad's favorite, the others (by this I mean Jung, Eun, Baek Ah) still seemed to harbor a nice enough relationship with their brother. I don't think it'd be unrealistic to see them affected/changed in some way by what was going on with him.

0

@andy pandy

I didn't think any of them were portrayed as being close to Mu through the prior episodes so that was my explanation for that. We rarely saw him with his brothers, he was a man apart usually, though always kind when he was around. He and So were the odd men out of the brother clan.

0

@Andy Pandy: So true! Great observation of how the political impact of his illness overrode the effect of it on his personal life. It's a bit of a waste, really, now that I think about it, because Mu has been reduced to a bit of a living walking plot point the past few episodes. It's like, yeah Mu's gonna be king so we'll just use his reign as a springboard to the last act of our story. But the thing is, Mu has been set up to be more than that. Kim San-ho's wonderful acting has elevated the character to more than just a figurehead and made Mu a relatable character with real relationships that he'd forged with his kindness. So for the show to just be like nobody even suspected their older brother to be poisoned is kind of a letdown. And also a stretch, because you're telling me that Baek-ah didn't suspect a single thing? Far out.

I agree with you that Su should have been suspicious. Was she too confident in her ability to run Damiwon that she didn't think anyone would have infiltrated the premises? And for her not to have put together the pieces, and like you said, realise what this means for So in the future, is worrying. But I also think that Su has sort of convinced herself that her visions have taken a better turn? Which may be negated in the next episode, seeing how Mu did die in the exact way that she'd foreseen it.

Argggh so true about the time skips. Like somebody had mentioned earlier in the comments, voiceovers would have been good supplementary if they were going to do time skips this frequently.

0

@Barbrey: I see your point~ at the end it's just a relatively small thing, so we can sort of agree to disagree, haha, but man, I would've loved to see it played out. XD

@kumoiwa: Baek Ah is far too busy spending his spare time running around in the woods like a Disney prince to figure things out~ lmao. XD But yes, poor Mu got reduced to being a plot point these past few episodes - he might as well have had "dead man walking" on his forehead! :c The poisoning just happened far too easily, it's definitely a letdown.

It would make sense that Soo may feel like her visions had turned out for the better or wouldn't be happening at all, but the dear show has momentarily (or at least, lol, I hope it's momentarily) seem to have forgotten that she ever had them? I hope they'll mention them again in tonight's episode. Man, I would love more voiceovers, since they are quite helpful, and if I'm not mistaken, the C-version seemed to have had a lot of them? I'd really love to hear more about what Soo is thinking.

0

@Andy Pandy: Ah right, Baek-ah was roaming the forests in hope of meeting Woo-hee again. I like Baek-ah, but his romance with Woo-hee is so haphazardly inserted into the show that it just seems redundant at this point.

I've watched tonight's episode, and without spoiling anything we've got our wish haha. Though like if they want to use her visions as plot points shouldn't they go back to them more often? It's this sort of slipshod that makes me so disappointed, because they had such awesome source material and it seems like the writer knows what she's doing, but the director and the editing team don't... really... ugh we could have had it all, to be honest.

Thank you so much for the explanation. That scene was so awkwardly placed that it seems Queen Yoo was proactively trying to kill So, which just adds to the confusion of how much hatred she could have for So and why. Now it makes sense. And I agree that if only this scene was shown earlier, people would see this marriage thing in different light.

The writer is failed in so many ways by the editor. I'm kinda feel sad for him/her, along with the hardworking casts.

Yes, I too feel sorry for the writer. I've been following the imagery that's been placed so expertly throughout and have never seen a kdrama texture and enrich scenes with this kind of depth before. I truly believe this could have been a masterpiece if the execution had been better.

Yeah, that's me for sure. Also, despite flaws, this drama was so eventful, enjoyable and emotional up to the end of episode 11 that the big pay offs more than made up for the disjointedness of it. But the last three episodes haven't had the same kind of pay off and the disjointedness has become more pronounced. I'm still loyal to the show but my enjoyment of it is decreasing in equal proportion to its increasing flaws.

Thank you, Barbrey. This background makes much more sense than the over-the-top flaming-arrow scene seemingly made solely to bolster So's decision to save the little princess by marrying her himself.

Now you gotta ask, what else is missing that would have made this show a masterpiece? It's so sad. There's such a great story here. I would really pay good money to get a 30 ep director's cut that would do justice to the writer's original vision.

Plot holes...I really hope they at least try and explain how the heck Yo survived being stabbed AND falling off a cliff.Dude just showed up with a fresh new wig and said he couldn't have survived without is uncle...okay, but how? Is your uncle god? A sturdy branch you held in to? A cushion at the bottom of the cliff? ...That stressed me out haha

I hate that we were robbed of seeing how Su and So's relationship developed...

And seriously, three years into a marriage and that prince, whatever number he is, is still actling like a toddler at the park and treating his wife like a like trash. Rude.

Anybody else peep the resemblance between paranoid King Moo and the paranoid king from Moonlight Drawn by Clouds? I guess marrying off your kids alliviates paranoia.

Everyone here has convinced me. I don't believe Wang So was in the palace for the two years that were skipped. It does not make sense at all that their relationship has not progressed in the 2 years if he and Hae Su were in the palace in the entire time. He had made his intention for her as clear as day at the end of Episode 13. If anything, Wang So was probably out of the palace frequently, running as a representative for King Mu, which then makes sense why Wook has taken such a prominent position. It would be have made more sense for them to do a Hae Su voice over at the beginning of the episode explaining what has happened in 2 years instead of this jarring transition. Believe me, if Wang So had been in the palace for 2 years, there would be little Wang Sos running around already. :P

Ah...bittersweet episode. Usually when OTP gets together, I feel full watching them happy as a couple. But THIS couple, I keep getting a feeling like my SoSoo boat is slowly sinking as their relationship deepening.

I suddenly have this thought, I might love it so much if Hae Soo stabs herself with Won's sword when she's being held hostage. Before she closes her eyes, she said 'please dont forget me' to Wang So, and she dies in his arms. Unable to accept her death, Wang So goes crazy and becomes Gwangjong that Hae Soo saw in her vision.

Well....too bad it didn't happen that way.

After this episode, my curiosity just sink to level 2. The more I see it, the story, while claiming will provide some twisted plot to original C-version, has gone more and more down that path. Unfortunately , it is done in worst timely manner and poor character development. But my heart still with this show, can’t help it. My highlights in this episode :

HS. I loveeee the final scenes when Yo threat So to make a choice, the one with HS closed her eyes. This particular scene for me, showing how much Su trust So righteousness and how loyal man he can be, that she has no doubt that So will prefer to not betray the King. She did not want So feel the need to save her, she instantly closed her eyes, prepare to die. I am ready to fight every person who said HS just another damsel in distress.

So. It is satisfying to see how mature he handles his relationship with Su (always love his bluntness when it comes to his feeling). Now he begin to show some King quality when he decided to marry that kid. It will be more interesting to see what will cause him to marry YH (I am pretty sure it will happen. The writer doesn’t want to deviate from history that much when they decided to bring Yo live from death.). If it’s following original version, then So obliviousness regarding Wook-Su relationship will play pivot role of Su future (which is sad, cause it will confirm how terrible Su will end. Sigh.)

Wook. The most disappointed one in this episode for me. Seriously, man. Can you bring more game in this hopeless game of throne? I expected more from you than just blackmailing the King and poisoning him. Tsk, can not even gain his trust. Also, it seems there was missing scene in SBS cause I do not see in this recap, the one where Wook, his mother, and YH talking about rebellion. What’s with that almost-crying-face, Wook ???! You have this far to the darker side. Stop being such a baby in front your mom and just get the throne already.

Jung. Is the bedroom scene really necessary ? It is very late development and I really hope the writer just leave this particular original adaptation aside.

Anyway, thanks to TVoneAsia and SBS who kept airing Ep 14 last night. And I know how naggy we were on twitter yesterday. Asking every minutes, and your diplomatic answers just kept us asking and asking.

I tried plugging through episodes 1 and 2 but the all the characters were so cliche that they were depleting me of the few brain cells I have left. :P While things have gotten interesting, I do feel like parts are dragging again. Then they pull apart and that look that he gives her while stroking her face (that "you have finally decided to reciprocate my feelings" emotion coming across just so perfectly)... I was actually quite okay with the 2 years time skip because it perfectly lines well with the ending of eps 13. King Taejo was dead, Prince Mu became the king and it should have been quite peaceful around that time because Yo was still somewhere recovering so there was nobody who would threaten the throne, well at least not visibly. Wook was working with his mercury plot though it’s unclear when he started exactly. Won was just being Wook’s sidekick. Other princes were doing their business as well. Since Soo was one of the few who could treat Mu’s eczema, it was reasonable that he would raise him to Sanggung so she would have access to treat him.

About So-Soo relationship, many are wondering if there was no progression at all after all the aggressive move he made towards her. Well, in my opinion, we have to look back to So-Soo relationship before the poison incident. So might have approached her actively, but he always allowed her some agency, he would not interfere if she didn’t need his help. It was only the poison incident onward and the doom of her to washer lady that he aggressively asked her to marry and leave the palace, because he wanted to free her from such hardships. We can say that So is pretty laid back with Soo if the situation doesn’t force him to do more.

Now we’re back to Mu’s reign. Things were peaceful, Court Lady Soo was happily doing her job, and there was no reason for So to take aggressive move anymore. I would say in those two years he was happily doing his job supporting the King while maintaining good relationship with Soo. We saw that Soo had the clean break with Wook on eps 13, so she had no more burden and was no more tied to someone. She took time to heal in those 2 years, and apparently her already existed feeling for So, now w/o constraints from having to be loyal to Wook anymore, was growing also, slowly but surely.

In conclusion, there was practically nothing significant happened during those 2 years, at least on the surface, so time skip is okay.

This quote from a review at Hancinema about Scarlet Heart Ryeo perfectly states my problem with this drama:

" If anything hurts Scarlet Heart: Ryeo it's the consistent lack of purpose. Scenes are in this drama, not to assist in the story, but to achieve maximum romantic/dramatic impact. What the production team consistently fails to realize is that context matters. When the whole cast is underdeveloped at best and a weak archetype at worst, nothing any of them do matters all that much."

Yep. Agree 100%. And once again, it's directing and editing choices. They seem to have omitted bridging scenes, motive scenes that build to character purpose, leaving us bereft of the logic that led to certain actions, events.

Required fields are marked *

It's not just a directing and editing problem, it's also the weak writing in this drama.

~Why was Ji Mong crying over the fact that the King(Wang Mu)died in this episode, if he is able to know/see the future than it shouldn't surprised him and the writer never showed any type of close relationship between Ji Mong and the former Crown Prince to elicit that type of reaction.

~What was the turning point that made Wook into a Evil character and if Hae Su is the reason that's a really weak to me.

~The King's death last week and killing off Wang Mu in this episode fail to resonate with me for the simple reason that I do not have an emotional investment in these two characters and their deaths were also done for dramatic impact.(ie drama for the sake of drama)

Required fields are marked *

I disagree. Just because Ji Mong can see some of the future, doesn't mean he can see all of it, and even if could, doesn't mean he wouldn't be attached to Mu. I also thought the drama established a close connection between those two, Ji Mong was intensely loyal to the CP and proves it over and over again. Also, Mu's death would have been much more poignant if scenes the writer had included, as explained further upthread, had not been omitted. As for Wook aiming for the throne now, I do think we've had sufficient reasons to account for it, but the drama has failed to make them emotionally resonant. This could be a writing flaw, it's true, but based on everything else I've seen it's just as likely, or more likely, to be because of omitted scenes or poor direction.

Does anyone notice that Wook was kind of digging his own grave in this eps?

Eventhough Moo had always been in better term with So more than other princes, but Wook had gained his ultimate trust on the fake rebellion. Yo was out of the game (they thought) and Wook should have known from his eavesdropping of So-Soo conversation that So had 0% interest on the throne. Had he been patient enough, he could persuade Mu to abdicate the throne to him willingly. Mu had never been passionate about being the king anyway so Wook really had the chance.

But he preferred to poison Mu with mercury, which resulted in Mu going crazy and forcing his daughter to marry So and making So his successor. If it wasn't for Yo's comeback then Wook would lose the throne. His own backup wouldn't sufficient to cause a rebellion.

yup, he could play better than that. he should have been aware how Mu trusted Wang So since YH poison event. The key is the trust. To beat So, he need to have that trust first. I dunno, i think this is the first episode i did not like. There is just too much that happened. We went from one scene to another without giving us time to absorb it all.

Even HS-WS scenes, as lovely as they were, i wished we had lingered on them. Like when HS finds out that he is getting married. They showed her sad for like 3 seconds. As a viewer i don't really feel her grief. And if i dont feel her pain then i conclude that she really does not love WS and it does not affect her as much. btw, she still flinches when she hears wook's name.

too much crammed into 1 episode ... it almost feels like the first 10 episodes were fillers given how much story we covered in the past 2 episodes and given how much we still have to cover in the next 6. Which is strange because while watching them i never felt that the earlier episodes were slow or didn't move the plot.

This should have been a longer show. 20 episodes is just not going to cover it all. Or they should have dropped HS in Goryeo during Mu's reign ....

Are the visions that Su had coming true next episode...? Oh god.

Also what happened to Yo's family after he "died" the first time? I wish there was a little more background at how Yo managed to muster up such an army capable of marching right through the palace. I mean if Moo had gotten all of those family forces wouldn't at least some of them see the giant ground force and do something?

The most development of the time skip of these two years I felt were definitely Wook. How cunning he is becoming and quite calculative when it comes to slowly ending someone's life. Like damn, he put in two hard years of work of getting Chaeryeong to subserve his poisoning plan. A plan he was so patiently willing to let play out and he was so close too until Yo was like what's up (get it?)

Like at this point I still like Wook because I think he has some of the most developed traits of any character in the show - good to bad, but his bad still being good because of his family and feelings for Su even though at this point Su probably can't look at him in the slightest way that she used to - AHH TEAM WOOK! So was pretty cool in this episode though gotta say. Also of all characters, I feel like Wook has the most redeemable story at this point in time.

Sigh I really don't know what to think of Su anymore. Still wish Won had a little more foresight to being a bad guy. I mean I guess I don't complain when good guys blindly follow protagonists, so I shouldn't complain about bad guys following antagonists. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT PLEASE.

it sounds so much like what Go Hajin would do, but sadly we're left with Goryeo's Hae Soo who promised to not lie but also didn't feel the need to be honest.

I know people's opinions differ, some said it's not an obligation to disclose past relationship. But imo I'd say honesty is BS if you still hide secrets regarding your relationship with your mate. See what it takes on YZ-RX relationship and most likely our So-Soo in the future.

I'm a huge proponent of "honesty is the best policy."

But, I wonder if Hae Su is not (again) trying to keep the brothers together by helping them forge bonds rather than battles. Admittedly, she's in a very tough position. It's obvious that she can't trust Wook. But, she wouldn't want Wang So to kill him. Ultimately, nothing did happen between Hae Su and Wook.

What would telling Wang So accomplish? Part of the reason we all want her to come clean is because we already know WS/HS's relationship is going to end tragically because she kept this a secret.

But, if HS told WS that WW was the one she was in love with....what would happen? It wouldn't bring WS/WW closer. If anything, it would solidify the enmity that is already building (whether or not HS knows the full extent). She did, after all, see them battle it out on the palace grounds. It might have been nice to see her reaction while WS and WW were sword fighting.

Oh well....what could have been....

Hae Soo doesn't want to give these 2 brothers a reason to fight for obvious reasons and as it is there's already sufficient animosity between them.

Not saying that her decision to keep quiet about Wook/Soo is the most beneficial in the long run (for So may find out through other sources), but it's not something that can be easily revealed either.

I love your version! Lack of communication/honesty is the root of 99% of kdrama problems between lovers. Surely she could have protected Wook from So's wrath by explaining it was all in the past, and nothing ever really came of it? And that she has no romantic feelings left toward Wook?

But I guess there wouldn't be a story if there were not misunderstandings...

After watching episode 14 , I must say I am 100% sold with this drama, beyond its flaws, for me its the little genuine moments that counts. There is so much hate on this drama and i think the reason is because its an adaptation, and there will always be a comparison on which one is better ( same as BOF, ISWAK, Fated to Love you etc) But I chose to accept this drama because it adapted the story plot but made it unique in a sense of the settings and characters

*BTW I remember reading a comment in the past episode reviews about what is the purpose of Hae Soo's Timetravel ~ My take on this is perhaps Hae Soo was there to be a witness of how Gwang Jong was actually not as bad as what historian has painted him to be..... That He was put into that position/situation and led to a decision that is beyond his control....Remember what King Taejo and Choi Ji-mong? That she need not to do anything, she is not there to change the past but rather witness the truth behind the History that is written in the future.

Perhaps Wang So is also like Court Lady Oh, it is enough for him to be remembered and not forgotten by one person who truly saw him for who he is and loved him inspite of his flaws...?

Little touches in this episode that touched me:

1. The white mixed with the black in the queen's hair. White equates grief, it turned white when the king died. Now that Yo's back, she got some of her black back, but it's still tinged with white - she's still grieving over the king's death, but happy her son's back...oddly moving.

2. The cloth pad that Chae Ryung gave her, saying it's for her bad leg - it shows Hae Su's still not healed, an indication she's no longer the carefree girl of the past. That Hae Su died with Concubine Oh, and I think that's the reason why she's now able to accept the fact that So is engaged, and going to marry the child. She's a totally different person now, she doesn't smile that much, and she looks weary. The modern Hae Su with her refusal to share her husband with other women has been cowed, beaten and broken into submission. Her weariness stems from her resignation that she can never ever leave the palace. She's too tired to remember her ideals of love, now it's enough to have Wang So love her - that's the only way she can go on living in this hell.

3. When So tells her he has to break his promise to her to take her out of the palace, and she nods her understanding, as her eyes fill with tears and roll down her cheeks silently, that was just sad....her quiet resignation, the unspoken sadness in her eyes, as another promise gets broken, and hope gets crushed again.

4. The part where So's fingers linger so tenderly, so lovingly over every contour of her face, as though he has been waiting a lifetime for that moment, so moving, I cried.

4. When Ju Mong cradled the dead king in his arms and that sound he made as he cried, like an animal in agony, so raw and harsh in its grief - incredibly moving.

Yes! I cried unexpectedly, too. It reminded me what a great person Mu has been to everyone, and sad that JM lost a longtime friend who was his age.

I am repeating myself.
But this drama series is a classic example of how a good story has its merits and can draw you in.

The fact that so much is wrong with this storytelling ( specially the storytelling aka direction and editing).. it still manages to draw audience in, still manages to get so addictive..

Except for LJK we don't really have phenomenal actors..everybody is doing their job but it is not irreplaceable.

AND YET.. the series is compelling..

So, I guess kudos to the author! .... Good stories can sell, should be given the respect they deserve.

So glad that Baseball ended on time lol.

First, the not-so-good. Like what many have observed, plot points were rushed and events were not built up properly. How is it credible that Yo can summon up an army and engineer a revolt within half an hour of appearing on our screens? How did Chae Ryung become traitorous? Why didn't anyone else notice the king's deterioration? At least one scene with gossiping ministers or ministers discussing back up succession plans, would have helped set the context to Yo's revolt, and could have explained how he simply strolled in like a badass and took over.

I guess the show's running out of time to paint us a fuller picture, and we'll have to accept it and move on. Oh but if only we had 25 episodes instead of 20.

On the positive side, the show took the time to deepen the So-Soo loveline, and it was indeed lovely to see their relationship maturing.

As far as their relationship went, I had no problems with the 2-year time skip. It was believable to me that Hae Soo spent the two years regaining her confidence and sense of self. I see their relationship as being in a holding pattern in those two years; Wang So pressing his suit through his ever-constant presence but quietly waiting for her response, and Hae Soo slowly falling for the steadfast man by her side and all but ready to fall into his arms at the end of the two years. There's a familiarity between the two of them when we see them in this episode that could only have come from weathering trials and tests and coming through these stronger in their understanding of and appreciation for each other. Their relationship has been earned and is thus so much more meaningful.

It was great that Wang So never turned sappy in his treatment of her. Loled at the way he claimed that his presence was sufficient as a birthday gift, and his asking her to row the boat. Awesome.

And I take back what I said in the last recap comments about So already knowing Wook was the one Soo loved. Wang So IS a blockhead after all. ?

Unfortunately, other developments outside of the So-Soo loveline suffered, but I'll take what I can get.

yo is rocking the hairdo, though, and why does he have his hair down? did he win over some wild clan of the mountains and had to accept their manners and clothes and all the rest?
and does that mean his wife is gone?

imho despite soo and so having open discussions and admitting to feelings etc, the first step of the breakup has already been taken. the man who would win a throne so that he could additionally win soo has accepted to get married or at least betrothed to his niece (even if for the very legit reason of saving her from a childhood similar to his own - and btw where was this niece before now?) - so, that man is already compromising his stand for the sake of the country.

good for the country and king, bad for the future of this romance.

and one can see where he will take the things he would do for soo - and all those things will poison their romance until he becomes the fratricide she always believed him to be and she'll lose her chance to keep them all alive.

yo being back and ready to step in - it's easy to accept. he is the third, and his mom is from a powerful clan who always looked down on mu, he might have been exiled - believed dead - but he had all this time to reconnect with his power source and bribe and win his way back into the succession. if he claimed he came to save mu from soo who was poisoning him - and have all those people say the same, 9th prince included - who's to gainsay him? so, the wolf-killer? baek-ah, who still doesn't have a lot of power? wook? ha.

no, i think he'll force so into being his own personal killer at command... poor so. though i wonder if killing in so's name is what will break him into being the gwangjong soo is fearing. she should be brave and do something drastic - kill herself, try to kill someone else, etc, but the show still has a lot of eps to go, i guess first she'll bring down so with her presence as a hostage for his submission.

chae-ryung :( at this time, i guess she was seduced by 9th prince or wook. she really is a traitor... *sigh*

let's prepare - yo's reign took about 6 years before it was done. are we in for another time skip? :D

Yes, you are so right. I think that's the writer saying it is impossible to change the events of the past or fate, no matter how you try: despite accepting or denying love, despite foreknowledge, despite trying so hard to avert events.

I haven't been thinking much about Moonlovers so far. I took it as it is and enjoy the shows all the way to episode 14 without much opinion. Good or bad, no complaints, no opinion.
But this episode is so mislogic.

The only amuse I found myself thinking about this episode is that Baek ah is prettier than his girl, in which I don't even know why these two people are even in the story.

At ep14, I realized there are so many unnecessary point and scenes made in the shows. I thought they would be used somehow in the future, but since kings Moo is death, I don't think they are needed anymore.

At least showing eyes candy scene here and there strategy works on me lol.

Hmm.. Im not sure why, but i feel weird when u are comparing a guy to a girl in terms of pretty.. (i know your point.. but then maybe it feels weird to me since i dont see any benchmark or reference being made.. like maybe the guy cosplay into a girl and looks good still, vice versa.. or u are comparing certain features like the face for eg..)

Thanks for another great recap, HeadsNo2!

I continue to attempt to suspend my disbelief. My sense is that the powers that be are trying to cram as much plot development as possible into this episode and the final six that follow. After watching the raw DramaLove version, I figured that we were well into Mu's reign, but didn't expect him to be whacked so soon by a conspiracy of poisoners which diverges from the historical record, if I understand correctly.

Even at the start of the episode, I felt as if I had a serious case of whiplash as the two-year time jump piled upon events and in turn piled upon revelations. At this rate, I'll be in traction until Christmas... On the other hand, I liked the way in which So's historical marriage to Mu's daughter was worked into the plot as his way of sparing her the fate of being a hostage to a neighboring power. If anyone in Goryeo could grok what being a political hostage meant, it was Wang So.

To me, perhaps the most touching scenes involve Mu and his mental decline in the wake of mercury poisoning, i.e., when he is sending his daughter off to the Khitans, and his pitiful demise at Yo's hands. Astronomer Choi's lamentation upon retrieving the king's body was so doggone sad... I'm really sorry to see such a decent character bite the dust in such a cold-blooded and ignominious fashion.

I've been having an ongoing challenge watching some of the dizzying zoom-in, zoom-out shots, along with the over-exposed scenes of So and Hae-Su's conversation in the rowboat. The excessive backlighting is especially tough on my eyes, and washes out the details of the close-ups. Whatever happened to stopping down exposures? It may be my aging corneas making it difficult to watch the artsy-fartsy shots that appear overexposed and out of focus... It sure would be nice if someone paid more attention to f-stops.

I've been noticing in both MOON LOVERS and MOON LIGHT DRAWN BY CLOUDS that the light flowing through paper windows is excessive and glaring. It's uncomfortable to look at... and this is even with the use of f.lux to make my monitor conform to daily and seasonal variations in daylight. Please spare me excessive backlighting that washes out details in the foreground shadows. I sometimes feel as if the scenes are swirling in the fog of Baker Street.

/rant off

I've been enjoying the actors' performances despite the technical glitches. As usual, LJG delivers with his fight scenes and expressive eyes.

PS -- Chae-Ryung is looking mighty guilty of poisoning the king. Early in Hae-Su's residency at Wook's home, it seemed that Chae-Ryung was pretending to be unable to read... I hate to say I've been smelling a rat, but her behavior in this episode is surely suspicious to me.

Even though I'm not a Wook-Su shipper...

OH MAN, when Wook snidely quips that he hopes no girls are upset over Wang So getting married to Mu's daughter: OUCH.

Talk about a low blow....but Wook seemed oh-so satisfied with his comment. All the brothers know that Hae Su would never accept being one of many wives. Wang So just made a major setback in his plans to marry Hae Su.

The look of evil glee in Wook's face: I'd hate him except he was just so good at being spitefully happy, I must hand it to KNH: good acting right there.

Gosh, the fact that they will face off as equal rivals: so intense!

That part was jarring to me, it didn't sit with the Wook I know. Wook has always been quiet, introspective, spare with his words, he's always been an observer, watching, listening...the only time he screamed was the part where he threw his hair mallet at the court lady and silenced her with such chilling precision. It turned my blood cold to hear that scream of pure rage from the deepest, most secret part of his being. This Wook who turns and laughingly throws those spiteful words so loudly, so crudely, in the presence of the king, is just not Wook. I would expect him to draw So aside, and with a curl of those lips, and a hint of icy mockery in his eyes, murmur those words in passing...wouldn't that have been more effective?
