Jo Jung-seok and D.O. have headbutt contest for sibling comedy Hyung

 photo P1.jpg

Jo Jung-seok (Jealousy Incarnate) is set to display his skeevy side in upcoming movie Hyung, where he plays a small-time con artist incarcerated for the tenth offense on his criminal record. He’s the older bro to EXO’s D.O. (Unforgettable, I Remember You), who was once a star national judo athlete. The movie tells the story of how they meet for the first time in fifteen years and start living together, and drive each other crazy. Park Shin-hye (Doctors) is also featured as the nosy coach of the national Judo team, who’s forced to deal with the contentious brothers.

The movie posters elicit laughter with lines that clearly delineate each character’s motivations. In his blue prison uniform, Jo Jung-seok stares forlornly while his poster reads, “So… where’s the bank book, brother?” Not looking too happy about reuniting with his swindling sibling, D.O. frowns and his poster says: “Kindly piss off, brother.” A frustrated Park Shin-hye clutches her forehead in distress and her poster reads: “Brother, stop it!” The thirty-second teaser (that teases the upcoming teaser, ha) shows the bros on a couch watching the trailer for Hyung, trading tense greetings and forced smiles, and ending with Jo Jung-seok’s sly wink and his line: “Just trust me.”

After seeing him in numerous roles where he’s the capable successful man, it’s refreshing to see Jo Jung-seok in a role where he’s the bungling disreputable rogue. In the main trailer, his character invokes a pity party with the prison guards using crocodile tears. He cites his family as his only reason for living, and the cause for his misguided venture into crime. So when his brother is critically injured during a judo match, he is granted parole to nurse his brother back to health.

Cohabitation hijinks start when Jo Jung-seok shows up on D.O.’s doorstep after fifteen years of no contact. During the trailer, D.O. says in one of his lines: “I have no brother.” I guess that’s what I would also say if my brother were an annoying jerk, always selfishly looking out for number one like Jo Jung-seok’s character. And claiming that he wants to “help” his brother when he just really wants the freedom to hit up clubs and run more scams does not put him in the athlete’s good books. Park Shin-hye features in the trailer as the coach concerned about D.O.’s physical and mental health, who becomes infuriated by Jo Jung-seok’s lack of cooperation.

With the sibling conflict seeming nearly irreconcilable, it’ll be that much more satisfying when the movie shows their growth toward accepting each other, and the start of a heartwarming relationship. The comedy film Hyung premieres in Korea on November 30.

Totally can't wait for this movie! I mean, Jo Jung Suk and Do Kyung Soo in one screen?! TOTALLY IN FOR THE RIDE AND THIS IS GONNA BE FUN.

Hope it will screen in my country.

I feel the exact same way! I love these two and they seem to have great chemistry in the teaser so I'm hoping for LOTS of bromance in this one!

Gaaah, because of Jealousy Incarnate, I am gobbling up anything Jo Jungsuk these days. I have managed to rewatch his earlier dramas plus his contemporary films in just a short amount of time! He's just so good in JI that in between waiting for the weekly episodes, I have to satiate my JJS fill with his past projects. Will also look out for this!

Me too! I was browsing Netflix the other day and came across The Exclusive starring JJS and I love it!!!! Between JI eps I'm watching his films. Once JI is done I am definitely checking out You're the Best Lee Soon Shin (I swear, the things I do for JJS).

@ Tara
Prepare to fast forward A Lot! Way too many scenes of wailing, crying women throwing tantrums. From the Mother to the Grandmother to the other Mother. I finally gave up. Not enough sweet scenes of Jo Jun Suk. IU was OK but way too young for a love line with JJS (reminds me alot of the Entertainer with Ji Sung and Hyeri). Really good side stories with the sisters but ultimately the whole story got bogged down in angst. Not enough story to sustain a 50 episode drama.

@toodles

Damn...I was thinking in real simple terms that 50 episodes = heaps of JJS and some quality story ? I actually prepared myself to watch his scenes with IU and not to have any high expectations at all. Aish...

Still, I think I'll brave this one. Wish me luck.

I actually think IU and Jo Jung-seok's chemistry is surprisingly adorable & makes this drama worth a skim-watch, at least. Definitely better than Ji-sung + Hye-ri for me. It may be hard to compare to his chemistry with Gong Hyo-jin, but still.

Keep in mind, I watched this back when he hadn't been a first lead in anything main-stream yet so my opinion could be higher than it would have been he had better dramas by comparison then.

Skim-watch is a good way to put it. Watching You're the Best Lee Soon Shin is like panning for nuggets of gold. With that cast, you know you will get some rewards but you have to sift through a lot of muck to find them. I admit I gave up about 2/3's of the way through.
I'm very happy to indulge in other shorter series to get more of him. I would even suggest "What's Up". It 's a good drama with a lot of music and JJS has a side story in it. He sings several awesome songs (along with Daesung of Big Bang).

@ Tara
Thanks for the info about the Netflix movie! I just added The Exclusive to my watch list.

Ugh, I still have to watch the last 10 episodes of YTBLSS...
I mean, I REALLY love JJS, he's my number 1 bias in everything, and I actually became a fan of IU through the drama (even got IU on my licence plate XD), and it has Yoo Inna whom I love, and Jung Woo, but... Sheesh.
This drama is also why I'm absolutely biased against birth mom in Jealousy Incarnate, the actress is absolutely ruined for me ^^"

Thank-you for heads up.
Will go look for The Exclusive on Netflix.
I want to see it too.

I first saw him in King 2 Hearts (which I watched mainly for Lee Seung Gi) and became a fan. Have you seen this one? He is such a gem and I'm glad he's getting all these lead roles now. Can't wait for this movie to air as well.

I LOVED HIM IN THAT. I'm not one to cry at much of anything (seriously, the last two eps of MDBC barely got ONE tear from me, even if my heart broke a bit (or a lot)), but I was flat-out sobbing in the last two eps of King 2 Hearts, all from JJS. He is a pleasure to watch, and I've yet to be disappointed with any time spent watching him at his craft. He's amazing. I have also liked each time I've seen D.O. So this movie is one I'm excited to see two-fold! Now if only I could find out what Yeo Jin-gu has been doing. I haven't seen him in anything recently... Welp, I'm rambling. Guess I'd better go! Hyung, fighting!

You should try It's Okay That's Love, he has a different role there and it's an actual supporting role rather than a cameo and it was his first acting role. It's a great drama so I'd recommend it even if it wasn't for him.

King of comedy Jo Jungseok doing another comedy project? Yass!

Seeing how the PD and scriptwriter, I think there will be some heartbreaking moment between the brothers, and judging how so far DKS role always been sad or beaten

Still waiting the day when the article will call him as Do Kyungsoo the actor we know than D.O. that's his stage name as singer not actor

Anticipating!

+100 on the Do Kyungsoo comment. That's when we know he's been established an an actor. D.O. the singer vs Do Kyungsoo the actor?

But will it come? I feel like most singers-to-actors never get there.

Actually most acting-dols that have a stage name are called by their real names in Korean media when it comes to their acting career. Even credits in movies/dramas refer to their real names. In D.O's case, even members call him differently when they talk about his acting. It's kind of interesting to notice that western (namely american) media sticks to the stage names and basically strip them of their individuality. It's always EXO's so-and-so, INFINITE's so-and-so etc. which I find kinda dumb since they're not a member of their groups when they act.

Some korean media use 디오 too for click, but they still use Do Kyungsoo at the same time...

Agree with this "they’re not a member of their groups when they act"

Right. Even SM already officially said that Kyungsoo will use his real name as an actor, it's not like using EXO will boost his name as actor too because most of public don't like idol-actor to begin with especially from SM

I saw both the teaser and trailer as soon as it was released, and the first thing I thought after seeing them both was 'Yay this isn't a melodrama!' because that's what it sounded like from the story description.

I'm so nervous about D.O. Comedy is not his forte and he said during a fan-sign that it's really hard playing a blind person. I hope he does well!

He also has his webdrama airing towards the end of this month, where he plays an arts student. And an OST for Hyung, which according to K-fandom rumours is a duet between him and Jo Jung Seok, which should be great.

Great time to be a D.O. fan, so much to look forward to. Movie, please be good and do well and do a lot for D.O.

It's actually funny because when I first heard about Hyung's synopsis, I thought it would be this serious and heavy movie about two estranged brothers that become close again after the younger one suffers an injury. But then that teaser happened and I was like huh?...huh?... LOL!
Looking forward to it!

Ha I thought the same, I was prepared for a melodrama but here we're getting a comedy instead. He really meant it when he said he wanted to try all kinds of characters during his acting career. Brownie points to him if he can pull off some comedy, given how serious and no-nonsense he is as an idol, or most of the time anyway lol.

But the cast, premise everything looks so good. Please be good, movie.

JJS is just on a roll these days. He's one of those actors that I don't particularly get swoon-y over (although, JI is definitely changing my mind) however I expected a SOLID performance from him and he 110% delivers without fail. He has the ability to absolutely let go and just get into the skin of the character….this is what I love about JJS so much.

The last time we got news on Hyung was October 19, 2015, when Shin-hye joined the cast.

The first time we heard of Hyung was August 1, 2015, when Kyungsoo was still considering it.

And it's finally drawing near! I'm so excited.

He is a good actor who seems to be getting his due with his recent dramas.

puahahaha. this looks super fun. i'd totally go see it if i were in korea.

i know JJS has played suave "capable" types in the past, but let's not forget he shot to fame with intro to architecture. and he's not exactly a pulled together type in jealousy incarnate either—just on the outside. we see his personal moments and he's a total (lovable) nut.

so somehow this sort of role feels completely, totally natural for him. like he's always been this guy... a loser. there's something about him that makes him dang perfect for these sorts of lovable, harmless loser roles. like how you just can't separate funny and cha tae-hyun. i mean, can anyone, and i mean ANYONE, imagine cha tae-hyun doing a straight up melo? what if he'd played joon-young (not necessarily opposite suzy) in uncontrollably fond? oh, the cackles!

DO is so good looking! was he always this good looking? he looks positively chiseled. maybe it's the weight loss bringing out his features more—i'm guessing he had to be pretty fit for this movie.

and i've always felt he could pass for moon geun-young's little brother. they would look so cute together as a sibling set somewhere in the future...

Oh, I just get the most ridiculous smile on my face when it comes to Jo Jung-Seok these days. It's like...so many of my favorite actors (Lee Jun-ki, Seo In-guk, Park Bo-gum, Kang Ha-neul, Lee Sang-yoon & several others) are performing wonderfully in their dramas right now, but all I can think about is this guy & how entertaining he is. I'll definitely be watching this.

True! Everybody is gushing over LJG or Bogum but I'm fully captivated with Jo Jung Seok. I'm not the type who swoon over male leads as well (Jason Momoa is an exception though). There's just something about how he makes his characters alive with his acting. I'm seriously considering buying a ticket to Korea just to watch this and support him.
