Drama viewership ratings for the week of Sept. 26-Oct. 2, 2016

The premiere of Woman With a Suitcase changed some things at the beginning of the week, and while no one will be able to dominate the impressive lead set by Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, the playing field beneath it seems to be evening out. While Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo managed to rank second on Monday, it dropped back to third (and last) place on Tuesday out of the big three broadcasters.

Still, Moon Lovers has seen an increase in ratings, which coincides with the show’s more interesting twists and turns this past week. Over in the Wednesday-Thursday slot, On the Way to the Airport rose to an impressive 8.3%, second only to Jealousy Incarnate at 12.3%. Shopping King Louis took a moderate third, though its fourth episode rose to 7.8%, which is nothing to sniff at.

As far as cable shows go, there weren’t any big shakeups. Cinderella and the Four Knights ended at an admirable 3.1%, while The K2 rose significantly from last week to net 4.4% for its even episode. It’ll be interesting to see if those numbers rise in the coming weeks, since the drama is pretty to look at, and is pretty darn intriguing so far.

Suitcase did pretty well pulling itself from 3rd place to 2nd within 2 episodes. It had a rather strong premiere (one of my favourites) but it doesn't seem like there's many people raving about it.

The K2's doing a good job pulling in the numbers, they're probably going to hit 5% before the halfway mark. TVN must be happy, especially after all the production money and promotion they put into the k2

I hope Scarlet Heart Ryeo's ratings go up steadily and slowly. They deserve it even with all the said critisms and flaws.

P.S I still love Wang Wook wangjanim.

At this point. It's kind of impossible because if you can see the rise of Suitcase rating, it really means that CJW have a strong following.

But of course, fans like us can still hope for it. But personally, i based the dramas i watch by the actors that i love and reviews (not hype).

[+1,383, -192] Congrats. I'll watch it when Moonlight ends

Yes ita really doing well internationally. But we do see a modest increase in ratings domestically partly the plot is thickening and there's more LJG involved last few episode s.

Oh after the first episode of Woman with a Suitcase (I almost wrote Woman IN a Suitcase which would've made this into a whole different drama lol) I almost feared a drop in ratings since it was all over the place but I guess the star power of CJW (and JJM?) made people come back and even more to tune in which is a good thing since ep.2 was a lot lot better.

And I'm so happy about the increase in ratings of Drinking Solo, I guess people just love to see Ha Suk-jin being in denial of his own feelings. ?

Cheers to increase in ratings for Drinking Solo!

Ep 7 had me squeeing and laughing so hard. Where has Ha Suk Jin been in my life? I love the dance, I love his dance! I find him good looking and cute but quite different from those Korean pretty flower boy looks which I dislike.

Jung Seok is such a douche bag but when he smiles or giggles, he's not very different from his little bro.

I love all the characters, even Ha Na's not-so-sincere bestie Jin Yi and I continue to be impressed by Kim Bum's acting.

Haha, your comment will is quite similar to a netizen comment about the show I read earlier in the week and I literally just got it! I'm a bit behind but I'm pretty much marathon watching and I don't think I've squeed so much at a developing romance in so long. I was flailing when he first saw her comment on his Instagram and then went through hers while smiling and laughing by himself in a restaurant. I also love how Hana is reacting to the possibility he might like her. She kinda likes the idea but she also approaches it in a fun, silly manner and it's so cute to watch.

Everything about the show hits the right notes for me! I really enjoy all the characters and I hope ratings continue to rise!

Also, I agree about Hak Sun @ET, he's quite attractive and in a very masculine way you don't really see with among many other actors his age these days.

Glad to see Cinderella ends up with nice rating and received pretty well.

sometimes variety show like Infinity Challenge and 1N2D also play a part in changing the rating.
This week, the asura IC chase game is really fun and I admit I'll choose that for my tv time than any of the show in the day.
Seeing jung woo sung and friends act with enthusiasm just deligthful, you got the thrill, the fun, the laugh and the bromance in it.

I'm not into Korean dramas very much and this is only the third drama that I haven't given up on, so I was wondering what you mean by 'fantastic reception' in specific terms of the Korean public? News reports and such? People talking about it in school/work/public? And I keep on reading about how Park Bo Gum is beloved by Koreans but what does that mean?? I must admit to being hungrily curious to everything PGB, especially in his natural habitat.

the reception online is good, like their clip viewed in naver is big, The OST charting is high and lot of variety show starts mention YeongOn couple as big contender for couple awards and a lot of people love PBG, mention him everywhere, also recently voted as the most beloved program after Infinity Challenge,
like lot of people love and knew the drama

Yeah pretty much everything you've mentioned. Everyone talking about it online, at work, at schools. Parodies, articles, news segments. Mentions of PBG and Moonlight on all the variety shows and co-star interviews. It's the usual signs of a show that has managed to do well domestically in Korea.

They've been parodied twice in Return of the Superman for the past 30 days. Not to mention SNL Korea did a skit on Raon and the Prince on their season pilot. Running Man also featured clips on Bogum and Soobin (who guested this week) in Moonlight which I find funny because Scarlet Heart peeps guested on that show before their premiere. There were even scarecrows with Raon and Yeong heads and school posters with Yeong quotes. Korea Drama festival even have standies of the characters. Moonlight is indeed everywhere in Korea at the moment, even at the recent APAN Awards. Some shows do well in ratings but are not culturally visible but Moonlight managed to do both.

And all of Park Bo-gum's current and past cast-mates praise him through the roof. Ra Mi-ran even said he's too perfect he's boring, but I bed to differ, because Park Bo-gum is anything BUT boring. He could be on his way to becoming the national bf, or national younger brother, or even national dream guy.

I love Ra Miran! LMAO! If Bogum isn't super duper kind it would have been boring. But his kindness is out-of-this-world per his colleagues and friends so that's the charm. Haha. They even make fun of him saying Thank You all the time.

0

Yeah, he's like a mix of Lee Seunggi in terms of public image, SJK in looks and charm with KSH versatility. Basically, he has all the traits of a beloved Korean leading man.

0

Although it'd be great to see Moonlight rise in ratings, I'm just thankful enough that this show is so well-received and well-loved by many, I hope to see this more because I really adore them lots. I think considering this is a youth sageuk, which might not be popular choice, they've already done a big achievement. I'm just so proud of them!

I think Moonlight has it's audience now. There is only 6 more eps left and I hope the ratings will stay in the 20s till it ends.

Yonhap News even reported that Blossom and KBS only expected it to peak at 10%. It really is an achievement for the team.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't expect it to rise much higher. It's at peak viewership and hasn't grown (lately) so it'll probably continue with 19-21% throughout its run.

While the new episodes might have had a good reception, that means those who are watching it liked the episodes. You aren't going to get a huge influx of people watching a drama in ep. 13 out of 18.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Ratings does seem to have stabilized so (as people above pointed out) it will probably stay within its current range for the rest of its run. If everything continues to go well, we might get an influx of viewers for the finale.

Still, I am very, very happy that Moonlight has gotten such high ratings and much love, especially since it's a fluffy fantasy romance sageuk.

I think Suitcase and Moon Lovers will continue duking it out for second place in the coming weeks. Suitcase has that CJW star power, and response has been positive so far. Moon Lovers has gotten very interesting from what I've read (will pick this up again once it's done). I hope whoever comes in third doesn't end up lagging too far behind.

P.S. There are rumors from Soompi that PBG isn't feeling well. Hope he recovers quickly! That liveshoot schedule is unforgiving.

Yeah, I think she's better off honing her skills in Chungmuro, although a solid cable drama could do wonders for her in dramaland too.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

And a lot of the juicy roles go to idols who can do little but look good. I don't think Park So Dam needs more time in Chungmuro, she's already got far more experience than nearly all the idol actresses out there, and far more talent. The day she muscles some idol actress out of a part (Suzy, for example - do we really have to see any more of Suzy? Can't she stick to CFs, where she excels?) is a day I will celebrate.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

First of all she is a movie actress. Her chance of getting quality work in Chungmuro is much higher than dramaland. The film industry is where the most talented people are at. Writers, directors, actors, producers etc. That's where real actors want to be.

Film actors are doing dramas for more exposure etc. Some of us may have never heard of the talented Han Ye-ri, Kim Go-eun, Park Bo-young etc if they didn't do dramas between movies.

If Park So-dam has an opportunity to work with stars like Song Kang-ho, Ryoo Seung-ryong, Jung-woo then she needs to drop dramas and say yes. Opportunities like that doesn't come by often. (Good luck with "Fifth Column")

Dramaland is becoming the playground for idols. They don't even have to prove much to get lead roles.

Cinderella with the four Knights the nonsense was able to generate good ratings.

Park So Dam was quite adorable but you just can't ignore the shortcomings of this show.

Woman with a suitcase has good ratings. Able to compete against the 2 already set big shows and Drinking Solo airs in different time slot so no competition.

Fight is between K2 and FantastiC. K2 is doing good because of its intense 1st 2 weeks as well as Airing half hour before FantastiC.

Cinderella last episode was actually quite nice. It started with a bang, slowly frazzled but last two episodes tied up all the characters neatly. Still it cannot be forgiven for the mid series mess.

I guess people who dropped out after ep 8 or ep 10, watched the ending to see how it closes, but there are also those who loved watching it as stress buster. Cutting short to a 12 ep drama could have made this series successful.

Watching all the romance and skinship, little banter and teasing here and there makes a good watch but it does no justice to story or its characters. from the start it did pretty job in every basic aspect. It only lived because of its fluffy moments and OST. Not even Happy ending can reduce the bad taste it left in my thoughts.

Though Park So Dam cheered me uo time to time.

Well, if source is bad then only this kind of outcome can be expected. I have given it 6.5 out of 10.

Me too! OTWTTA is such a quietly addictive watch! And unlike a lot of viewers, I'm happy to see which ever direction the show takes and ready to see it play out which ever way. I'm not fervently hopping they get together but I'm not really opposed either. In fact, this being my first adultery themed show, I'd think it kinda brave if the show actually goes there, which I guess that makes me a terrible person...but I really wanna see how it plays out!!

- I guess that makes me a terrible person

This drama is about two forlorn souls having a powerful emotional connection, lust is the last thing on their minds given their circumstances. Are they being infidel, yes, but committing adultery, definitely no!

I'm rooting for the couple, so let's forget about what is morally right or wrong and shall we just give ourselves a break @Flightey Gazelles? Why do people get addicted to dramas? Because the majority of people are too bogged down by the reality of day to day living such that everyone is leading a perfunctory kind of life on auto-pilot. Watching drama provides an outlet for emotions, through the joy and sorrow of the characters, we get to enjoy a fun ride to experience different lifestyles, different personas, and those things we don't even dare imagine doing in real life. As such, why are we applying societal pressures on the characters in a drama? Can't they be given the freedom to follow their hearts? It's just a drama after all!

Agreed. I hope it doesn't slow down! I like that it's refusing to dilute the action with more conventional storytelling, and that it's keeping the script bare bones. I think it's good so far. It's totally ridiculous but it's lots of fun, as long as you're an action fan (or a Kwak Jung-hwan fan <3). I think more negative responses to it are from people who don't necessarily enjoy action or see any value in the genre, because there's not a whole lot else going on there lol. Idk, it makes me nostalgic for when I'd come home from school and veg out on Metal Gear Solid lol.

It reminds me a bit of Chuno in terms of the sheer amount of fight scenes, except it's dumber and set in modern day. And the cast is kind of eh (but Kwak Jung-hwan does most of their work for them anyway lol. They're cast so they fit their characters perfectly, and most of the emotional scenes are driven by the directing, not the acting).

@Mary. LOL. It's missing the Kojima level craziness and who knows if it'll become more conventional in the future, but the hero's backstory was textbook MGS and I feel like the stuff it's doing with private security and secret proxy wars between political rivals is kind of what it would look like if you put political Kdramas and Metal Gear in a blender.

I'm all in for good fight scenes like Kim Moo-yeol in Beautiful Bride. I enjoyed Chuno and some from that one drama that shall not be named lol.

I think that since movies and dramas are a reflection of society, its natural to have some expectations and apply some moral boundaries and so forth... But that doesn't mean that those stories shouldn't be told. And wanting to explore the complex human emotions involved in these kind of stories doesn't automatically mean one condones them.
I suppose you could liken it to enjoying serial killer thrillers. It doesn't mean you support or want them to get away with it but you want to see what leads to such depravity, how seemingly normal humans could become like that, if some people are born like that, who is responsible and how it could have been prevented. For example, one of the things I loved about I Remember You is that no matter how lovey dovey it got, it never let us forget that this are humans who are very capable of doing some pretty horrible (understatement) things.
I love with when dramas don't shy away from this and doesn't gloss over these things.

I'm usually with the majority (i.e Secret Garden, Moon Embraces the Sun, You From Another Star.. etc) but this is the first time I'm not. So, the rating of Scarlet Heart hurts me and so do the criticisms towards the drama. Now, I understand those who love dramas that did not do well in terms of rating. I feel you guys.

We are the same. I love MLFAS and Secret Garden but recently i don't get the hype of DOTS, Doctors, W( i dropped this midway).

SHR, was the first low-rated show that i became obsessed. I don't think it's bad though. The domestic audience just didn't like it but i believe it's a good drama. It's a relief that it was received well internationally so the hardwork of the casts paid off.

Me too!!!! Me too!!!!! I'm just so upset poor LJK is not getting that massive hit he deserves for his amazing acting. Come on even that soppy show Doctors got 20 percent grrrrr?

it's nice to come here and find fellow fans of low rating shows. Just watching LJK is a treat!

I like SHR better than MDBC...the rating is overated for mdbc n i think coz of PBG

0

and cheers to us who loves Scarlet Heart Ryeo...the domestic reception is just as heartbreaking as Wang So's tale..I'm watching Moonlight before, captivated by PBG's charm as well, and skeptic to watch SHR because of the initial reviews.Glad I clicked episode 1, since then, I dropped Moonlight midway, even W which is not on the same time slot. I think I'm being too loyal to SHR?

Is Woman with A Suitcase good? I meant to start but I was falling behind with my drama watch last week. I am surprised it managed decent ratings with the two Moons past their midway mark.

Although it can't be exactly the same, MBC does seem to have lost some Monster's viewers to Moon Lovers. Although ML ranks 3rd in Mon/Tues slot, the ratings have been rising so it's a good sign. One thing is obvious, there's more people tuning in on Mon/Tues than Wed/Thurs.

I just realize if I pick up Woman With A Suitcase, I will have 4 Mon/Tues dramas on my plate! The only other show is Fantastic. Totally skewed!

I and apparently quite a few others here like it, but depends on what you like. So far better than I expected, but we all know that far too many dramas start going downhill around ep 5 to 7 or so.

For first two episodes, it is quite good. but just putting the lowest expectation so you won't be disappointed later.

@windsun33 and @Sera

Thank you!

I am always game to try and have qualms dropping a drama if they don't meet expectation.

Usually I don't make a conscious decision to drop a drama. I just find myself falling behind in catching the latest eps and reading recaps to never going back to it.

Currently really loving FantastiC and Shopping King. Still need to watch OTTA, Cinderella recent episodes. K2- Song Yoon Ah is slaying her character. In case if they abandon her character later, I will abandon the show as well!

I'm currently only watching Moonlight but I checked out the first recap for Woman With a Suitcase for CJW it was surprisingly a really really interesting start that I found myself impatient for the second recap. I'm not surprised at its rise in ratings, hope it rise more for CJW & the rest of the cast sake, I'm planning to marathon it & maybe K2 once Moonlight is over and I can concentrate on other shows again

I have to wonder about the logic and decision making of the channel that aired "W"... they couldn't even extend "W" by one episode (when the story actually needed the extension, and we needed more H/h cute scenes, and they were dominating the Wednesday/Thursday ratings). Now I look at their Wednesday/Thursday ratings, and they are last.

As for Jealousy Incarnate, I have put it on hold for now, because I can't take it if the heroine doesn't end up with the second male lead (nor buy it as a believable story). So I will wait until the final episode airs, and read the reviews, and based on that I will decide if I pick it up again or not.

Right now I feel like there are no solidly good shows to watch on Wednesdays/Thursdays.

As for "Moonlight Drawn by Clouds", now that I have finished "Oh Hae Young Again" (and liked it), I will start catching up on this cute drama.

One question- Why aren't much people watching 'Shopping King Louie'?

Seriously, it is such a cute and great show. People are missing out for real.

I think because on paper this drama has nothing new. Youth survival drama doesn't sound attractive it seems unless you have a household name for your production like School or Reply franchise. And I must say the first 2 eps of SKL could improved a lot on the final editing.

It's the execution that people are missing out. SIG, NJH, ODH, and even his mother is like putting magic on this show through their delicate acting.

As I said above, never thought that I'd immensely enjoy watching everyday things in a drama like talking about kitchen equipment omg. It really is FANTABULOUS lol, if you know what it means.

It's hard to get through the first episode, and I dunno, something about the lighting or the cinematography, it looks pinkish or too washed out? I want to try for Seo In-guk, but maybe not now.

The cinematography or it looks pinkish is just only in the 1st ep, but not the rest of eps....after 2nd & 3rd ep you will get addicted n hooked with the drama..

Agree with PuppyLouis !

I guessed the 1st episode's setting is kinda pinkish cos it's like a fairytale for both of the leads (one in his "castle" and the other one in her "mountain" but carefree way of lives)....as they stepped into the real big city, they start to live in the more realistic way of life (stress and lack of money and etc....hahaha)

Thank goodness for the no-think, light, fun fare of C4K! I'm pretty impressed with how it did overall considering tvN aired the show at 11:30 PM. It was sap, but the actors played their parts with gusto - looking forward to seeing what PSD gets up to next!

Also, our Gap-soon is bumming me out to no end - what an awful show full of awful/sad people. I've liked Kim So-eun since BoF, but she either has limited drama choices or a terrible management team.

The writing of Our Gabsoon is very very poor. Kim So Eun never had any good script in her hand which is really unfortunate ( the only her roles that i like were all in sageuk -young Empress Chun Chu, Princess Sukhwi in Horse Doctor). Hope cables like TvN or jTBC will offer her something good in the future. I just cannot stop praying for OG to end so I can see her in another project, which is worthy for her.

She has wasted in terrible management before, 10 years in this industry are not used wisely.

So true. I really loved Kim So-eun in Empress Chun Chu, I think she's really good in sageuk, but she keeps picking bad project that totally doesn't suit her, it's worst in Our Gab-soon, she's so a crybaby and screamy.

The K2, the problem is those drawn out political moments. As much as I loved that speech the husband made, it went for a bit too long. Certain moments that can end early are drawn out unnecessarily, I hope that changes soon. Also, more of Anna please.

Love MDBC, but I still lowkey wish that Scarlet Heart does better in their ratings, just so we can see the entire cast doing a flash mob to EXO's growl.

I'm a fan too of Scarlet Heart. Of the two "Moonlight" dramas, I think SH has a more serious plot. With the last 2 episodes, I was completely hooked, and could not wait for the next episodes.

It's such a pity that not many viewers tune in to this drama. LJK's acting is above the charts and IU's as well. She has matured in her acting in this drama.

SBS is aggressively promoting it, still. Like, everyday, on Naver there's Scarlet Heart articles and media on its main page. Most are exclusives so they pay to be on it. Just how many behind-the-scenes are they going to release, for real? I myself get turned-off by it even when I'm not actively seeking it. Comments on Suitcase beating Scarlet Heart was laughing about how the Scarlet's media-play is soo over-the-top and they still get the last place. I get that SBS is trying really hard to get an audience (which works as there is some increase) but I get why the average viewer would be irked on how this drama is being shoved on their faces everyday.

@Rose t I really don't wanna compare. Both dramas have their own merits and their own faults. I think it's just a matter of preference. Tbh neither comes close to being my new all-time favourite.

@Shini Good on them for trying? Honestly I don't care what SBS does, I just want to see LJG dance to Growl in hanbok. Drama Gods please, I only ask for so little in life.

Shopping King Louie deserve much more higher rating to be quite honest, i actually more excited to watch this drama next episode than for example The K2 next episode. Now that saying a lot because I like Ji Chang Wook.

Regarding the pairings in there, I probably end up shipping JCW and yoona's female bodyguard lmao. I just can't stand Yoona too damsel in distress character.

On the other hands, in Shopping King Louie I'm so enchanted with Seo In guk and Nam Ji Hyun's onscreen chemistry. They just give you butterflies. And I guess people dont see it, I'm a girl but I found Nam Ji Hyun so beautiful with her tan and curly hair

I'm currently on episode 11 of Cinderella and even though a lot of people seem to not like it, I personally am loving it. It is definitely not complex, or an amazingly written show but it is perfect as a fluffy no-brainer romance and that's exactly what I wanted from the show. It reminds me of when I was younger and reading all those shoujo manga of old and it gives me good feels. That's all I want right now and it has delivered perfectly. I'm so glad the show has done well for being on cable and in a brand new time slot.

I noticed that DB is the only site [based on my research] with this feature so THANK YOU! ratings discussion is indeed fun and informative. great job at making this comparative ratings report. i noticed though that it is not available prior to week of Dec. 14-20, 2015. a lot of kdrama fans [myself included ? ] also watch previously aired dramas it would be great if you could post comparative ratings report even for weeks before this started so that we could see how our favorite concluded dramas fared in the ratings game with their competitors. THANKS!
