Beans of Wisdom: Tables over history

angieya writes about Shopping King Louis in “Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching” comment #11:
It cracks me up that at the beginning of this drama most of us were expecting to see amnesiac Louis’ journey in becoming more self-sufficient with the help of the ever so capable Bok-shil but turns out that his real ability (besides shopping) is to make everyone his servant. Maid 1-2-3 and Butler Cha. Pffft. I still have a tiny bit of hope that he’ll learn how to take care of himself before regaining his memory and going back to his old life.
In “Shopping King Louis: Episode 8,” aranea points out this detail in comment #9:
The most important moment of this episode:
Louis meets Bok-shil on the steps, and takes all of their bags to carry the rest of the way.
It is the little things that have the deepest meanings. Louis has literally become Bok-Sil’s “servant”. The King is dead, long live the Queen!

I think Maxim coffee wins the award for the best use of PPL. Maxim helps Mr Lee win 5 stars! Maxim helps catch a serial killer! What will Maxim do next??
redfox adds:
I hope that if Bok Nam really is dead, Maxim gold will bring him back to life.
like, I am putting all my hopes on instant coffee now, please please please.
And acacia replies:
If you can catch a serial killer, you can definitely bring Boknam back from the dead!!! I BELIEVE IN YOU MAXIM!
aranea writes in “Shopping King Louis: Episode 9” comment #14:
I consider the gifts that Louis brought his new family a unique declaration of his love for them. If we consider Louis at the start of the drama, he purchased only very special items and then he jealously guarded them. His possessions were the things that he treasured most. The post-accident Louis has a very different value system. He is going through his uber valuable possessions and finding the items good enough to give his new found family. He is sharing and thinking about others before himself. They are his new treasures.
O_o replies:
Actually Louis refers to the things he buys as this kid or this guy a lot and talk to them as if they are animate beings. To him, they are like his best friends. For him, giving product reviews and people reviews are not that different. So it’s more like he’s introducing one set of his best friends to another set of best friends.
Growingbeautifully says in “The K2: Episode 7” comment #15:
I’m amused that K2 ends up saving one family member after another, from Park Kwon Soo and also generally from each other or from themselves. His loyalties lie with himself. He will save anyone because he can and because if he failed, his guilt would be great.
While Farah86 has a pretty apt description in #46:
JH is like a double sword blade..both can kill..no one can control him either yoojin or sejoon..he save both of them…even yoojin has to acknowledge him even when JH save anna later on from her.I think JH has his own conviction…he will do what he think is right to do.
Dakchigo shares this info in “Drama viewership ratings for the week of Oct. 10-16, 2016” comment #7:
In case anyone’s wondering, “1% of Anything” pulled in 0.713% and 0.766% ratings this week, an improvement from last week’s numbers.
To which Kendi replies:
I wonder why the rating isn’t even 1%…
.
.
.
Okay, I’ll show myself out.
La Plume writes in #17.1:
This being said, looking at ratings is always fun as long as they don’t cut short a show for not getting good ratings. The number of shows which high ratings I just never could understand is just too long to list so I’m a bit taken aback when I see some shows being criticized in the comment section just because they don’t fare well rating-wise.
They are good shows which fly under the radar or which are simply not aired at the right time ( One striking example this year for me is Wanted, which was a flawed but pretty solid show and the ratings were just awful since the competition was fierce)… but shows which ratings are over the moon even if they’ve got no substance ( yeah I’m looking at you Descended and Heirs).
My interest in ratings reside in one fact only: If it does too poorly, one of my favorite shows can but cut short… I’m still enraged at Wild Chives and Soy Been Soup…
wapz adds:
I think alongside you’re concern of shows being cut short is also the fact that poor ratings may affect a writers creativity and an actor’s future projects and status in the industry. Second leads may rise to main leads if their show did well. Look what DOTS did to Jin Goo, he was pretty much under the radar all this long even doing tertiary characters rather than secondary. Plus, the writers will avoid making different shows/experimenting on new ideas that didn’t settle well with the audience. I don’t know if the writer of Beautiful Mind would attempt to make such a show again. Or just in case, if Song Jae Jung’s time travels were not a success would she dare to make more?
In “Su Ae meets friend and foe on the way to her house,” Master’sSun writes in comment #1:
I would much rather have a secondary loveline between Jo Boa & Lee Soo Hyuk, in another life I suppose ?. I’ve felt this way about a lot of second lead actors and actresses, one example would be Jeon Hye Bin and Lee Joon in woman with a suitcase. End the forever alone heroic second male lead and bitchy second lead trope in 2017. Spread the love dramaland ?
Mk joins in:
Destroy the bitchy second lead trope. Burn it to the ground.
pogo:
ia, burn it to the ground! I’m sick to death of female second leads always being written to get hate or look pathetic, because apparently viewers can’t be trusted to feel sympathy for more than one girl at a time, smh. Meanwhile multiple male leads can be sympathetic, no problem.
Agree:
And A kind second male lead whose sole purpose is to spark jealousy in male lead or serve as tissue when female lead is sad & then thrown to lonely sunsets or abroad… this needs to be stopped too….
Klurker suggests:
Put a powerful talisman over its ashes, or spread it on the path of all Trucks of Doom. Amen.
angieya notes in “Oh Snap! One big happy family for the Man Living in Our House” comment #3:
Amazing how LSH looks like he’s either photobombing or been photoshopped into every pic.
Cali:
Mukadil doesn’t photobomb pictures. Everyone else is photobombing his post Kko Kko protection photoshoot.
So Omomomo shares this gem:
That’s because he has been photoshopped!! I believe this is the correct version
Zoe writes in “Jealousy Incarnate: Episode 16” #25:
I think one of the greatest differences between real life and fiction is that fiction has to make sense and real life doesn’t. Real people often make odd choices, are completely incomprehensible in their decisions, constantly go back-and-forth, fall in love with multiple people, and we accept it as one of those things, we understand that we won’t understand. But in fiction, there is a clear progression of events, each leading to the next. In that context, JI, as nonsensical as it may seem, channels life more than it does fiction. For all it’s insanity, it’s far more real than most dramas that just follow tropes, because it follows emotions, and it lays bare what all of us already know; people aren’t predictable. They can’t be pre-empted.
Above it all, the writing is masterful. It reminds me of a story a friend was telling me about her grandmother who has Alzheimer’s, and who was once convinced that she was being held captive by her family, and told my friend to rescue her. So my friend devised an elaborate rescue plan to save her, complete with regulation black clothing and walkie-talkies.
It was a funny story. She told it in a funny way.
“You have to laugh,” she said reflectively, at the end, “because if you don’t, you might just cry.”
L:
Zoe, this analysis is amazingly beautiful. And the comparison to your friend’s story puts the analysis into an even more humane and “real life” context. Thank you. I agree with everything you said. As an audience, we tend to get frustrated when dramas seem non-sensical. I came to the conclusion a while ago that one reason we might demand that tv shows and movies follow a neat line is because they are escapes for us. We live the messiness of “real life,” so why would we want to watch it play out again? It is kind of a paradox, to watch something on TV that is supposed to be based on reality, but expecting that “based on reality” to also deviate from reality by being more ordered. Perhaps that gives us the illusion that our own lives CAN also be ordered.
In either case, this show indeed deviates from this expectation by being messy, and ENJOYING that messiness. The writing, the directing, the characters, the cast, even the they way the camera moves around (the shots are so haphazard, one moment we are zoomed in, next second we pan around, next second we are focused to the side) – all unpredictable and messy, and really an ode to realism. That is what this drama is, an ode to realism. Usually with other stereotypical dramas, I am rooting for certain characters or I am appalled at certain parts of the plot. Interestingly for this drama, I am not rooting for any of the characters, I do not particularly like/dislike the characters, and I am not deciding that the plot should move this way or that…I am merely just living life with the characters and observing as they make their decisions and as they zig-zag. Of course I am happy when they take unconventional drama approaches (if this 3-way cohabitation happens, this drama will go down in my drama history book), and at the same time I am neutrally taking in all the ridiculousness and just rolling with the bitter-sweet tragicomedy playing out. Which is kind of how I approach real life as well.
fab is worried over something at “On the Way to the Airport: Episode 8” comment #24:
Soo-ah and Doh-woo are wonderful together, but can they stop killing his beloved ones every time she meets them? I’m fearful for Uncle Suk, he’s so endearing- nothing like anything I’ve seen that actor play btw.
Flightey Gazelles shares the same feeling:
Uncle Suk has me worried too. Plus he’s going around uncovering all these secrets, a highly unsafe measure in the sidecharacter rule book in dramaland. Watch your back Uncle Suk!
Purple Owl asks in “Kim Yoo-jung and Cha Tae-hyun play cupid in Because I Love You” comment #3:

UmbrellaMan replies:

Yoyo writes in “Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 16” comment #103.1:
Some executive whacked nut from SBS probably had this insane light bulb moment thinking that: “Let’s remake this epic BBJX series and put our own twist to it.”
Dumb executive 2: “That’s a great idea! What kind of twists did you have in mind?”
Whacked Nut: “Let’s use Goryeo history but make it into an epic love story of epic proportions by having our viewers do the work of placing key elements of the story together!”
Dumb executive 3: “Like having them research?”
Whacked Nut: “Exactly! That way, we get a higher viewer retention rate because they won’t let all their efforts go to waste.”
Dumb executive 2: “While we’re at it, let’s have different versions out for our simulcast.”
Dumb executive 3: “Let’s place this show in a timeslot where programs are most likely to get pre-empted!”
Whacked Nut: LET’S DO THIS!!!
Dumb executive 4: “Don’t forget to screw up the love story!”

While YY shares her two cents on the candle scene in comment #4.2.1:
I believe they didn’t do it.
They lay in bed chastely and exchanged poems about the water and stuff.
The highlight of the night was when she performed a dance with shadow puppets.
He also performed a medley of wolf whistles in quick succession.
Then they fell asleep.
Pebble has a suggestion:
For those of you who are still wondering, probably the easiest way to rid yourself of curiosity and boredom is to pick up a flower and pluck the petals out one by one as you chant alternately “they did it”, “they did it not”, and your patience will be rewarded with an answer. lol
Seltzerwater talks about love in #5:
ON WANG SO’S TRANSFORMATION
It occurred to me that Hae Su and Wang So’s love right before the Crown Prince’s death and Eun’s death was a pure, uncomplicated love—the kind of love we hear songs being written about. Wang So’s feelings for Hae Su surpassed anything else in his life, it was the only thing that mattered to him. But in Episode 16, we can see that things are changing. Because he had to kill Eun, and because Hae Su was involved however indirectly in his death, his feelings for her are no longer as simple as the pure love that it once was. Don’t get me wrong, I still think that he’s in love with her, but there’s many many more complicating emotions in the way. He had to kill a beloved brother, he had to bow down to Wang Yo, he’s been sent away from the Palace where he has time to think about the broader implications of his actions. And unfortunately, this is where Hae Su’s downfall begins. She’s always been the kind of person who has said that she will stay the same if the other person stays the same, which we’ve already seen has not worked out for her in the past. Even if the core nature of a person does not change, the are many actions and decisions that will make a different person at the end. And that’s what’s happening to Wang So. He’s realizing that as a leader, he can make a real impact on people that he cares about and that might NOT be less important than his love for Hae Su. He’s no longer the love-struck teenager who would die for his lover, but rather someone who begins to have the vision for his destiny. I mean, that’s a hard call to turn down: the call to destiny to become who you were meant to become. And as awful as it is, I think because Hae Su cannot match him in his actions. Because she cannot survive in the palace with him, they have to part. And it will be horrible because their love has NOT run its course, but its feasibility has.I’m really impressed by how the writer has shown us how transformative Hae Su’s love has been for Wang So, it has allowed him to step into his destiny, but also WHY it will not survive the palace. Unless Hae Su becomes cold and strategic like Yeon Haw, I don’t see her really making it in Goryeo. Hae Su would have to become a completely different person to ensure her position in the palace (like Queen SMS threatening to kill bebe WS and being responsible for Lady Oh’s miscarriage; these are HUGE travesties of humanity and I don’t see HS ever finding these actions justifiable) and if she becomes that person, I don’t know if Wang So would still love her. Is it tragic? Absolutely, because whenever these two will love each other until the end, but their relationship will not survive to the end.
In a discussion about potential reincarnations for the characters, Yoyo writes (#107.2.1.4.6):
And modern day Queen SMS ends up being a has-been news anchor divorcee who is struggling to live with her ex-husbands ex-wife for the love of their daughter, who by the way happens to be modern day Yeon Hwa. The other queen (wooks mom) is actually the ex wife of modern day queen sms’ ex husband.
*wink, wink* see what I did there?

Emsel talks about our love-hate relationship with characters in “Drinking Solo: Episode 14” comment #19:
Right from ep1 I have been following DB recaps/comments. Initially people were frustrated with Kibum when he was slacking off and imagined Chaeyeon to like him back, but later loved him in today’s episode when he understood the reality and tried to cheer up his friends. Likewise everyone were annoyed with GM when he pushed his feelings for HN but went back to liking him once he started having an aim.
In fact the same happened with almost all characters. Audience disliked JS thrashing people with low standards but loved him when he redeemed his actions by loving Hana, Jinyi using Hana for her own needs to actually becoming her friend at times of trouble, Hana from being timid to growing into a stronger person. Isn’t this how real life is? We all have people in our lives who we hate at times but still love them. The characters all have their part of mistakes but they learn from it. This show sheds light on how we all need to understand a person’s situation a little better.
acciokdramas brings up a certain topic in “First look at Weightlifting Fairy’s genius swimmer and elegant gymnast” comment #10:
This is a touchy subject, but I really hope the drama handles the topic of heavy body size and fat-positivity well. I know a lot of teens in Korea watch k-dramas from a young age, and so did I, so to have a show tell you that whatever size you are right now is okay, is perfectly fine – that would be such a confidence boost. Especially since standards can be set by the many, many slim, pretty actresses and how they ‘always get the guy’ and all that stuff; I just want this k-drama to be able to portray to all the teenagers out there that fat isn’t a curse word, being fat isn’t a curse, and fat is fat, without any negative connotations to the word.
BossyPixie writes about the tug-o-wrist-grabs-war in “Woman With a Suitcase: Episode 7” comment #7:
You know, that scene from the first picture didn’t bother me as much as it seems to bother most people. Don’t get me wrong, both men grabbing Geum-joo like that was disgusting behavior, but it didn’t turn me off the show. Why? Because Geum-joo doesn’t just stand there and take it. She calls them out on their behavior, basically telling them to leave her out of their pissing contest.
[…]
I think it’s too early to give up on the drama because these are events that unfolded in one episode. The real question is where do they go from here. Do one or both men realize how terribly they have been acting and seek to change? Does Geum-joo continue to stand up for herself and tell them where to get off? If these things happen, then I will think the drama is great. People aren’t perfect and sometimes act deplorably. If they learn and grow, then good.
Sharreb shares in “Fantastic: Episode 13” (#16):
We watch diff dramas for diff reasons. Ironically I watched Fantastic for no reason at all but to fill in some time. Ended up its THIS drama that i will remember most, even though i havent even finish watching. Its the drama i appreciate in both characters and delivery and also the most thought provoking.
My sister recently did sky diving in New Zealand and proudly told me she can now put a tick to that on her bucket list. This led to us both planning a trip next year to do paraglidng, and take a helicopter ride. Seeing Joon-ki doing things on his bucket list got me to thinking of my own mortality. We dont usually address it. In fact i first thought of it few weeks after delivering my first child. Ended up i bought insurance so that in the case of a sudden death i wouldnt be a burden on my husband and to plan ahead for my child. If im So hye or Joon ki, i wouldn really be doing the big adventurous things, i too would like to do the simpler things. I would like to watch the sunrise wih my husband the way we did on our honeymoon. I would like to walk the beach barefoot, watch sunset, feel the breeze and watch the stars together. With a growing baby and juggling work, its really the simpler things that we stopped doing. And its those sweet quiet moments that i will remember and treasure most.
azzo replies:
True, I too think that it’s the simpler things we do with our loved ones that matter the most and even if they’ll remember us by all the crazy and adventurous things we did, it really will be these simple, mundane things that they’ll miss when we are gone!
And Imbuk adds to the Fantastic love (comment #8):
If anything, this show needs to be watched for the way it portrays friendships. We see the friendship between the women who have been friends for so many years juxtaposed with the friendship between hae sung and joon ki who only knew each other probably for a few months. But, the amazing thing is, there is no difference at all. It just goes to tell that it doesn’t matter how long you know a person, it’s just how well you know them, to be good friends. I think if I ever feel down and want to feel better about living and life in general, this will be my go to drama.
Also, this drama is kind of slow, like its not really compelling for us to know what happens next. But, like lovepark said, that’s what I like about this drama too. I always compare watching this drama to sitting on a boat moving in a river. You are just slowly gliding but enjoying your ride feeling relaxed, comfortable and peaceful, occasionally anxious (when the boat gets rocked by turbulence in the river) and sometimes angry (when we see litter in the river) but just really glad to be there at the moment.
In “Fantastic: Episode 14” comment #16, Sharreb also writes:
Screenwriter 이성은 / Lee Sung Eun you r amazing. Hope to see more works from her.
What the show did right.. Cancer is never the main subject. Its always the people. This drama shows the best of people at their worst most vulnerable times. So hye sending off of joon ki and the latter not leaving until she came. And joon ki using his own passing to show in action that its alright to smoothly end in this world. Also the talk of after life and being reborn again. It doesnt dwell on death being one dimensional as “the end” but Just like the joon ki who appeared in the cell. Their wisdom and companionment and that we remember of them will stay with us. So brilliantly scripted directed and acted. I ran out of adjectives
Anonimosity speaks the truth in “Spill the Beans: Real-life drama support groups and spreadsheet conversions” comment #9:
Spills the Beans and Boys Over Flowers are inseparable. BOF is the culprit for starting kdrama addiction. Each time I read Spills the Beans, there will always be someone who falls into its trap. It’s like a drug. It’s bad but it makes you feel good. And then you will start to look for other kinds of ‘drugs’ too. Your life will never be the same again.
Moonlight ended this week but the beanies are as eloquent and funny as ever. Sarai writes about friendship in “Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Episode 17” comment #33:
It’s amazing how a character, with his loyalties on such seemingly opposite sides of the “wall”, really presents the most devotion and conviction of all the characters. There is no question, this is a man who does what he believes is right no matter the outcome. It’s inspiring.
When he fell, I’m not even kidding, I stopped the episode and sobbed, literally sobbed. I couldn’t believe it. Then when Yeong and Byung-Yeon had that final beautiful moment of friendship… When he repeated that line that no matter what – Byung-Yeon was always the person he trusted more than anyone – it was so heartbreakingly beautiful that I sobbed some more. What a wonderful example of righteous, unadulted friendship. I’ve always thought that friendship is the purest and rawest form of love, because it’s the only love where one doesn’t “expect” anything from the other person. Unlike romantic love which requires reciprocation (with expectations and desires) to be fully realized and enjoyed… friendship demands no further action than being there, being present, in the moment with your friend. Simply being friends is the ultimate reward.
While Taeki’s horse-riding Teacher notes in comment #43:
Because it is Byeong Hyun-ie, though he was pierced and stabbed and slashed, he is alive.
If it is someone extra, the person might just be kicked in the leg, but he would automatically fall to the ground and die. That’s the rule.
C-chan has eyes for someone else in #54.1:
Not a lot of people appreciate PM Kim as a character, but he absolutely exists in our world, too. He’s flawlessly corrupt, unable to see why his way is wrong, and the perfect reflection of our Prince who is the exact opposite of him. Yeong, who burns with passion, and PM Kim, who wouldn’t melt in the desert.
Ira asks in “Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Episode 18 (Final)” comment #27.1:
How are we gonna love next week without these cuties…..the withdrawal will be very very hard.
azzo adds:
I have a moon-sized hole in my heart like that’s even possible!
Celine’s comment in #15.2.3.1 might be the answer:
My eldest sister who does not watch kdramas often and this is the first drama she completed has been re-watching Moonlight nonstop. She told me, “I’m not going through withdrawal because I never stopped watching it.” LOL

blnmom’s family is split:
Ha, my mom was pretty mad that they totally ignored history. But I kept telling her from many episodes ago, they can’t kill Bogummy or they’d have a riots in South Korea.

For Team History, evw09 writes in #40:
I wholeheartedly agree with you, Javabeans. In the PBS Special Superheroes: A Never-ending Battle, Stan Lee said he uses scientific concepts to make characters’ powers sound logical and believable regardless to whether they are plausible. When you write story based in history, you are bound by certain perimeters that cannot be finagled. Those perimeters anchors the story in reality and gives weight to the story. There’s a way a person entered the world and a way they leave it. We can toy around with happened in between but certain elements (weddings, childbearing, major events, etc.) must remain place to maintain continuity and logic. Furthermore, once you deviate too much from the actual narrative, you run the risk of losing the essence of the person.
Admittedly, it’s easy to see why the manhwa writer chose Prince Yeong. His life story is fairly bare since he died so young so, it gives much license for a present-day writer to play around with history. But like Stan Lee said, things must be logical and believable. Not accounting for Yeong’s death changes the entire narrative and creates an entirely new story. I wish the writer would have taken another route in order to be more in line with history.
All that to say, I do fully appreciate this drama. It was a wonderful journey to take and the cinematography was breathtaking. I can’t wait to see future projects from everyone involved.
JessA finds a good compromise in #44:
They did get creative with history but it goes with the whole underlying theme. What kind of world would Yeong create as king? And they crafted an amazing image of what that world would look like. I’m really glad they went this route. We know it’s not true but it’s a perfect way provide an alternate ending to a show were we kind of already knew how it would end.
In comment #66, in response to Ra-on thinking Yeong was demanding a kiss for using his face on her book, Lia says:
Yeong just wanted royalties, Raon!!! Don’t assume things! LOL.
suegarbaby wraps up with an analysis on the show’s title. In comment #9.2, she writes:
Love how the title itself “Moonlight Drawn By Clouds”, is a metaphor and a great over-arching theme for the show.
The Moon being the metaphor for royalty or prince being surrounded and upheld by his people is wonderfully detailed in Yeong’s journey from powerless prince to a King who has a heart for his people and his nation. For what, after all, is a King, if he doesn’t have a country and a people to govern over? A King is not a King without his people.
And I love how Yeong learns about this through the various people in his life.
[…]
Love truly is the driver of all things in this show, whether it is the love of a mother to a son, a father to a daughter; or love amongst dear friends. At the end of the day, love needs more than one person or oneself to shine. We need to be surrounded by the people who care for us, who have us in their hearts and who are willing to make sacrifices for us, in order for us to illuminate and shine at our very best and brightest. It makes us whole, fills us up with happiness and joy, and it gives meaning and purpose to life.We are the moon, and the love of the people around us the clouds, and our moonlight shines best and brightest when we are drawn by them.
Chimchim’s Noona shares her story in “Drinking Solo: Episode 13” comment #7:
I was in a relationship with for 6 years. He promised me he would marry me tomorrow if needed but when the time came he became aloof and ghosted me. The past year was long distance. He could have been honest from the start and not led me on like that. Or at least have the balls to break up officially. Nope. He stopped replying to my texts. So Jinyi’s plight hit me hard. It brought back all those feelings of hurt I have been harbouring. Sorry for the tmi, but I just want to thank the drama gods for this gem of a show because I love it and it makes me laugh. I also would like to thank dramabeans because this has been my comfort for some time. I don’t really comment but reading the recaps and other people’s comment and just getting lost in K-dramas has been such a great help to me. So thankyou.
Lady Jaye:
I’m so sorry this happened to you, Noona, and I’m glad you’ve found some solace in KDramas and online community. I know this isn’t worth much, but in the long run, you’ve dodged a bullet.
Sera The Ms Temper:
Time will heal! So stay strong and let yourself busy with life ?
I used to be in the same situation although not very long, but I chose not to hurt myself rather than waiting for uncertainty in a relationship. Now I am more than comfortable living as a single lady although I envy my friends who’re already married and having baby. For now I will enjoy my single life and I know I will meet the right one at the right time. q
Db:
I feel your pain @noona. Well we can’t undo whatever that’s happened but we’ll be there for you ? Db is more than just a recapping site…beanies are friends for life. So we’ll get through this and have fun, yes???
Thanks, all, for keeping the comments section a fun and comforting place to hang out in!

I'm glad evw009's comment was chosen. I was wondering why the writer opt to pick a historical figure instead of creating a fictional prince like they had done with Moon Embracing the Sun. By no means am I downplaying how lovely the drama was even with its flaws, but it just made me wonder what could have been.

The PD actually wanted to create a fictional character using the novel as inspiration only, but the novel author insisted on keeping the name Lee Yeong, that's why the hanja name is different to historical CP. They have addressed the issue of history in interview already, that the drama had made many changes to history, and that it is an entity of its own, only inspired by history, not based closely on history.

Because Moonlight itself is an adaptation from the novel and the writer IS basing the character on Crown Prince Hyomyeong in history, though with the many changes from the book, I don't think you can call it an adaptation anymore. The PD in Moonlight wanted to go for a different route, and explained in his interviews that he wanted to change Lee Yeong's name to mark that he's a totally different prince from Crown Prince Hyomyeong, essentially they want his persona and historical background, but they don't want his tragic end, and JessA explained it best, we already knew the prince's tragic end but this show provided the best example of what could have been had he lived to see the day.
Many viewers are probably beefed because they were expecting this show to hold true to history, which most of us did to, that's why we were so worried how the ending might turn out during half of its run because most of us actually want to see him on the throne. Yeong has shown so much integrity and royal charisma that it'd be such a shame to see him ride off the sunset with his beloved and leave the people he desperately wanted to care for personally, like the way he promised his mother.
All in all, I think they did a great job. They could have stick to the history and make everyone more or less happy, but they decided to hell with history, the hero must live, and that takes gut.

Ah thanks for the replies from both of you guys.
I think I could have worded my question better because my questioning was directed towards the writer of the manhwa herself and not the drama (I don't expect the drama to follow the manhwa 100% anyway). I kinda wish she had opt for a fictional character than a historical one since I've read she decided to not follow the history part accurately as much (the prince didn't die in her manhwa either or so I've read).

The web novel writer actually followed history by not making Yeong king and instead making him live the rest of his life away from the palace. The PD wanted a happier ending for Yeong and so wanted to change the name of the prince, but the writer and PBG objected. The PD compromised by changing Yeong's name in hanja but retaining the Korean pronunciation. Hence, a completely fictional prince with a happy ending.

I heard in the web novel, the author did pay some respect to history by having CP faked out his death, and live a secluded live with raon.
And I don't see why author should opt for full fictional instead of based on historical, because her work is not a historical document, it's a fiction novel. And putting fantasy into what could have happen in real history since CP Yeong's life has little info, it was perfect to build a story on.
Putting a twist in a historical figure shows us what could have happened. It is like re-writing history in a sense. I find it's exciting to see an alternate ending to history, like how the world can change and it keeping me thinking how will the writer change history from the one we know. Because if it's a total fictional prince, then there will less anticipation on which route writer will take, and we will just assume our happy ending because there's nothing we can compare the story to.
I just really like when historical events are used and there are twists to it.

I don't know much about the novel, but I heard that the prince faked his death and lived with Ra-on in the end, he didn't become a king, which honored the history part of the real prince.

I haven't read the web novel, because I cannot find it in any language I can understand. But I also read some spoilers that said that at the end of the novel CP Lee Yeong faked his death and lived happily ever after with Raon (they had twins I believe)
However, that ending would not had worked for the CP they built up in the drama.
When at the end of Episode 17 CP collapsed from poisoning I actually thought they would go that route, and for a whole day I felt so dissatisfied with the idea of that ending.
I mean, for the whole Series PBG played this idealistic CP who wanted to build a better world for his people. He fought all the way until the end to get rid of the Kim's negative influence on the country. He wouldn't have just slipped from history just so he could be with Raon. That simply does not compute with the character they built. So in that sense I am glad they kept true to the Lee Yeong they built (and not history,) and made him step up and take the weight of the crown upon himself. It may not be as easy as faking your death and living HEA with your sweetheart, and probably CP Lee Yeong will face many challenges as a king (who happens to love the daughter of a traitor, pardoned or not) but I admire this Lee Yeong more, for taking the harder road towards the world and future he envisioned.

You read my mind! Your sentiment is something I was also trying to convey.
Another spoiler from the web novel is that the Rebel White Clouds Society is something started by Prince Lee Yeong himself, based in secret to fight for the people against the corrupt ministers, which Lee Yeong cannot do openly as Crown Prince. Though he fakes his death to be with RaOn, I'm sure there's more and he continues being behind the scenes to influence things- because again in the novel, his father, the King knows and blesses the union of Lee Yeong and RaOn and his son's fake death/disappearance, and Ha Yeon as Crown Princess, adopts one of the LY-RO twins as the royal heir.
The prince they built in the drama was definitely wonderful- how he went from brazen prince to a noble king, thinking of the people. I always felt strongly that the show would have a happy ending.
Any other ending would have not made the audience happy or made sense to the narrative storyline- considering they invested themselves in a death right at the beginning with the Face Reader's prophecy.
I was expecting that since this is a Kdrama marketed as a romance, CP definitely wouldn't die. And there was no logical way for YoonSung to become King than rebellion (backed by his family), which would mean replacing the Lee ruling family of Joseon with Kims, something even more fantasy-based Kdramas (Moon Embracing the Sun, Rooftop Prince) have never done. And YS has no birth secret and dies in the web novel (although his death in the Kdrama was not as well plotted as his death in the novel).
I'm glad to see the world which Lee Yeong envisions. I'm also glad that RO decides to write a book on it, hehe.

October 24, 2016 at 3:14 AM
My thoughts too! Which is why I had no qualms with flouting history. They spent a huge chunk of the drama focusing on how Yeong learned the ropes of being a great future King. Had the drama killed the character to follow history or go for the fake death to be with Raon, it wouldn't make sense (Even if I absolutely love YeongOn, I'd roll my eyes.) and would be an even bigger travesty than flouting history. Moreover, the drama has put a huge disclaimer and the novel writer herself said that her work, which is took creative liberties as well, is different from the drama. I liked how the drama is a separate work altogether from that of history and the web novel.

Maybe what makes it seem weird for me is that they are taking an interest in finding out what we think of their dramas. Like really actively taking interest by translating our conversations. Since Javabeans is a well-known site, naturally they'd monitor our conversation as well as our thoughts on it. I don't think it's a bad thing, in fact, it could be a bridge between us and the k-drama world in Korea, they could consider our inputs, like and dislike and tastes, it's really a win-win situation.

The internet wins! Criticisms happen all the time regardless of what platform was used. To make a mountain out of a mole hill is what tabloid reporters do at times. Unless they exploit you in the wrong way, then that's entirely different story.
If it happens to catch the eye of someone really important in the biz, then you know you pricked a bone or two. Hee

The post they quoted me on was when I wrote in Moonlight's episode 13,
The worst thing man can do (other than crimes and such) is to lose the faith of another or lose faith in another. The greatest thing a man can do is seek forgiveness in that other or forgive that other. I hope Yeong comes to understand Ra-on’s circumstances and judge her based on how he knows her, not by what she is known for.

Apparently, it's possible. I'm suffering from major Moonlight withdrawal that I'm having Monday blues, which I haven't had in like ages, worst than when Kill Me Heal Me ended. I have to add a caveat to what I said about second lead women:
I'm fine with them being antagonistic or not traditionally "nice" (same goes for first leads too) - as long as there's more to them than that, and the reason for that antagonism is rooted in more than just one-dimensional villainy or hurt feelings over a love interest. Chae Soo-bin in Sassy Go Go, Kang Hanna in Scarlet Heart, Song Yoon-ah in K2, Park Shi-yeon in Nice Guy - on the surface they're all the bitchy second lead and all of them except Chae Soo-bin even act out of some kind of feeling towards their leading men, BUT they still have depth and dimension to their characters despite that. If that was the model of second lead writing, I wouldn't be so annoyed by it.

I agree pogo. Annoyance from me for the female second leads comes from the fact that they are so one dimensional and how it is shown that their sole purpose is to get the male lead. I loved how W hinted on it and somewhat told writers that female second leads should be given a purpose or life/story of their own.
Plus, I realized that I didnt continue with the discussion that is mentioned here. How I wish DB would notify us about comments/replies. I keep commenting here and there that I usually forget where I commented Ha.

This is why I appreciated how Moonlight dealt with its second female lead. She was a genuinely lovely character. Some of us beanies felt for her and could see ourselves rooting for her with the male lead in an alternate universe. In the end, she snapped out of her unrequited hope to gain his affection, and learned to respect her self worth. What a great message for a youth drama. I was glad the show gave her the happy ending of freedom that she deserved.

i've been reading every BOW ever since it started, and i legit fell off my couch, hyperventilated for a minute, then excitedly scream to my puppy that 'MY COMMENT IS IN BEANS OF WISDOM! OH MY GOD!'
Thank you, DB! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take a few screenshots and giggle like a crazed fangirl (which I am) for the next 10 minutes.

Love your comment, and I had the exact same sentiment upon hearing about the backstory of the athlete. Unfortunately such a topic will never get a chance in a Kdrama, and it's saddening that even though the athlete approved the makers of the drama to take liberty in the storytelling I thought it was a shame the public will never get to live her story in a raw and authentic way.

well, maybe in the future, as 21st-century ideologies and beliefs (LGBTQ+, body positivity, etc) become more widespread, we'll have a k-drama that properly instills a life message to love our shape and size no matter what society tells us! thanks, and i love your insights as well! i hope the real weightlifter isn't miffed by the k-drama's results!
