Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

Happy weekend! Team Dramabeans here, checking in with our updates on the good, the bad, and the WTF of this past week. Does anyone else need a hug or a stiff drink to wash it down? Maybe the Chuseok holiday meant time away from dramas for some of you, or maybe you just watched more dramas with your family, like me. Hey, I had to inherit it from somewhere. Tell us what you’ve been watching, and what shiny new shows have caught your eye around the bend! –girlfriday

Currently recapping: Moonlight Drawn By Clouds

Fantastic: I am so loving the Ji-soo and Park Shi-yeon relationship that I am super bummed that it may not get a chance to develop. Of course his health is more important than a drama; it’s just an extra crying shame because it’s poised to be so adorable, and if she doesn’t get to explore the relationship with the adoring admirer, I don’t know how her story of growth and healing will get to play out. At the least the leading couple’s romance is cute and funny, and I can’t wait for them to get past their misunderstandings. I can’t decide if I want Joo Sang-wook to learn how to act, though, or to be an epic foot-actor through and through.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: I didn’t mind (that much) this director’s inexplicable love of extreme close-ups in his previous dramas, but it’s so distracting here that it actually angers me. That said, the ONE time I found it stunningly effective was when So insisted Su look him straight in the scarred eye, which did make my heart skip a beat. And while I find the story flow okay within individual episodes, I sure wish there were more flow over the series as a whole. It feels like we’re catching scattered episodes in the time-traveler lady’s life, not one thrilling story about the overall experience.

Drinking Solo: This week the show really won me over, and made me warm to every character more, especially Ha Suk-jin and Gong Myung. The student trio of fools gives the comedy a quirky, eccentric vibe, and I’m liking how this show focuses less on the eating and drinking than the Let’s Eat franchise and just uses it as a recurring motif, rather than super-long interruptions of food porn.

W–Two Worlds: When I’d asked for a happy ending to the drama, I should have been more specific about happy including satisfying. My high opinion of the show in its first half was based on the anticipation of getting (hopefully cool, mind-blowing) answers, but once we didn’t get them, my opinion of the earlier parts retroactively gets lowered. My main problem with the show is that it was so full of tricks designed to fool me in the present in order to pay off a future twist that I stopped trusting where the writer was taking me. I knew I was being toyed with, so I stopped buying into the world and accepting the rules, because I knew they would just be invalidated by newer ones. All that said, as a whole I still think W is a pretty damn cool show. And now that it’s over, maybe people (ahem, Korean media) can stop using the word “context” without context.

girlfriday

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: *contented sigh* I’m just going to live here in my Moonlight bubble happy place and pretend the rest of the week didn’t happen.

Cinderella and the Four Knights: Is there any way to send Sohn Na-eun’s character to fashion school on a different continent? She’s putting a damper on my cotton candy fluff, and this show is not one to hold up well under any dampening, of any kind whatsoever.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: I always reach for this show right away, but at the end of every hour, I’m dissatisfied. I don’t know why I keep going back expecting a different result. It’s like the definition of futile; and yet, there I am each time, in the hopes that Lee Jun-ki will get something important to do.

Jealousy Incarnate: Well, finally. This show certainly takes its time getting anywhere, but the slow unraveling of Jo Jung-seok’s true feelings was worth the wait. Now that we’re here in mixed-up-feelings romanceland, you’ve got me.

Drinking Solo: Oh no, I actually like Park Ha-sun with both brothers! I can actually feel myself getting on the wrong ship, but I can’t seem to stop myself. Noona romances will be the death of me.

Currently recapping: Cinderella and the Four Knights

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Having dropped W and Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, the only show I’ve been keeping up with is Moon Lovers. This week, episode 6 felt oddly out of place and sorely lacking in Lee Jun-ki. Episode 7 was much better with lots of cute moments and more screentime for Jun-ki and all the other princes. Generally speaking, the show is quite pretty (characters and all), but sometimes I’ll come across some puzzling edits, jarring cuts, and nonsensical compositions. For instance, when IU was reluctantly watering the shrubs, there was an extra long beat before Lee Jun-ki emerged and groaned about getting wet. And before his head popped up, the entire shot was distractingly out of focus. I’m aware as to why it was out of focus (the focus had to be wracked on Jun-ki), but the shot was framed so poorly and took me out of the scene. I hope the show finds its groove soon, but if it doesn’t, well, at least there’s top-grade eye candy.

tineybeanie

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Solid, happy fluffy drama. I enjoy every minute Kwak Do-yeon and Park Bo-gum come onscreen. Surprisingly, I actually like the second lead female character, which is always a win.

Our Gap-soon: About to give this one up. Nooo! The cast had so much potential. It’s Lee Wan’s first project since forever, and the So-rim couple reunion. So I’m super bummed that the plot is so muddled.

W—Two Worlds: Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve begun to see the actor playing Yeon-joo’s father everywhere. I thought had never seen him in anything before W. But after a chill k-movie marathon weekend, I just realized he’s been in some of my favorite recent Korean films, in all types of genres from The Face Reader to Train to Busan.

Fantastic: Joo Sang-wook does jealousy nearly as well as Jo Jung-seok does. It’s so cute that I wanna squee, but Park Shi-yeon and Ji-soo’s scenes were the ones that really captured my interest in last week’s episodes. He’s perhaps my all-time favorite noona-romancer, with Park Seo-joon coming in as a close second. So it was that much harder to hear about the news of his illness.

chocolatte

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: This drama went from fluffy cute to genuinely moving within a span of several episodes, and I am completely smitten by it all. Park Bo-gum continues to be magic in every episode (he smiles, and I’m blinded temporarily) but I find the rest of the cast to have just as much heart, and I’m fully invested in what happens to each of them.

W—Two Worlds: It’s not often that I watch a show solely to see what happens next, without being emotionally invested in the characters, especially the main couple. But that’s what happened for me with W — and with the last few episodes being no match for the ridiculously thrilling first few, I walked away from show thinking, “huh,” and that was it. I’ve always been a fan of Lee Jong-seok’s and still am after his performance here, but I hope that I’m able to connect more to the characters in his next project in dramaland, whenever that may be.

Jealousy Incarnate: I’m behind on this week’s episodes, but I’m enjoying the quirky humor and the chemistry between our three leads. Gong Hyo-jin and Jo Jung-seok are as sparkling as ever (albeit in very different ways), and after a slow start, Go Kyung-pyo is really coming into his own in this role. I do find the show to be plodding at times, but the unexpected laughs and genuine character moments more than make up for it.

Marriage, Not Dating: I’ve been meaning to pick this up for a while now, and I finally got around to finishing a decent chunk of it these past few weeks. The second leads don’t do anything for me, but the main couple is pretty much everything I ever want in a romantic comedy. So far, I’m sold.

SailorJumun

Fantastic: I didn’t think Ji-soo could possibly get any cuter, but he certainly proved me wrong as the lovable, bumbling attorney Sang-wook. His endearing (albeit somewhat naïve) positivity is downright contagious; it’s no wonder Sul couldn’t stop laughing at the guy. I’ll admit that I’m sad the noona-dongsaeng loveline might get shelved due to recent news, but I’d much rather have a happy, healthy Ji-soo than a character in a show. I’m wishing you a full recovery, Oppa.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Is cutie Crown Prince out to get me? Why is he continually trying to kill me with every episode? You should take it easy with the teary-eyed smiles, Yeong – I want to live to see the rest of the show.

W—Two Worlds: Oy… Where the hell do I start? This might be the most complicated relationship I’ve had with a drama since Doctor Stranger (the denial I had with the downfall of that show was so strong, you don’t even know). I think we can all agree W wins as the superior by a landslide, but I feel like the disappointment with the second half of W hurts just as much, if not worse. Because, UGH, the first half was perfect. I almost wish it could’ve ended with episode 7, but I wouldn’t go as far to say I didn’t enjoy the drama as a whole. I still think the whole concept was remarkably innovative and genius on writer Song Jae-jung’s part, and the way she played with the meta was so freaking cool to watch. Plus, I was always invested in our story with Yeon-joo and Kang Chul, even with the tangled mess of rules. Since I loved the couple so much, I’m (sort of) willing to let go of all our unanswered questions. I’m content with the bittersweet ending and in knowing that after all they’ve been through, they can now live out their lives together, no longer held back by any rules. And meanwhile, I’ll be here. Welcoming the post-W depression.

Laica

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Much squeeing was heard around these parts this week, and this viewer was no exception. Not only are the music, the visuals, and the acting all executed so well that I feel my heart fluttering like a teenager’s again, I love how this show makes an old trope new. Let’s face it, we’ve seen the crossdressing romance done, and done well, before. But this drama mines all the angst and the tension, and gives us the swoony satisfaction that we crave, while still managing to give us a new dynamic between hero and heroine. I love the way the sageuk setting both raises some stakes and makes others irrelevant, while the youth of the main characters gives us that heightened emotional feeling that is underscored even more by the nature of life in the inner palace. Like Ra-on and Yeong seem to only see each other, I can only see the two of them. Second leads? What second leads?

Jealousy Incarnate: Seo Sook-hyang is one of my favorite drama writers, and in her usual style, this show dropped us in the middle of a story full of characters living rich, interesting lives, and is now letting us organically get to know them. I love the three main characters so much, but especially Na-ri and Hwa-shin. Their hilarious antics have me in stitches almost all episode long, except when they suddenly have these incredibly vulnerable moments that make the bottom suddenly drop out of my heart. I love the way this drama portrays the absurdity that often accompanies tragedy, and the way laughter and pain are so often two sides of the same coin. That’s a way more accurate portrayal of how one deals with the hard things in life than the usual wailing and chest-beating. (Also, best use of “Wrongful Encounter” in a drama ever.) My only complaint is, I want Na-ri to end up with both guys in alternate universes. Or at least for this Epic Bromance to last forever. The foreshadowing fairy be damned.

W: the first 6 episodes were solid but after this....Han Hyo Joo' acting start annoying me! I'm not sure why?!

Moon Lovers: Love, Love, Love for this show. Lee Jun-ki is great in everything. Each time I got irritated due to the editing and director, I forget everything when I saw LJK's face LOL.

I dropped W at around episode 9 i think. But the episodes till the reset are the Best bit of TV i have seen in a while. Beyond awesome.

And i'll second you on ML. So many avoidable flaws but i see LJK and i cannot look away. What to do?

I kinda get what you mean about HHJ. I liked Yeon-joo as the flailing manhwa fan who manages to save herself. Then she "fell in love" with these KC versions and she turned into a mess.

Ugh what a shame. She fell in the trap of the Kdrama heroine syndrome. She can have as much spunk and personality, but once the hero gets in the picture she wilts in a mess and never recovers. The downfall of most dramas. Absolutely frustrating.

I didn't feel that she turned into a mess, as a matter of fact I felt that she held up pretty well given the terrible situations she was in (especially in the second half of the drama).

I see nothing wrong with a heroine getting to rest a bit while the hero takes control of the situation, especially after everything that YJ has been through. I'm actually surprised she didn't suffer a nervous breakdown by the end. I mean SB didn't even suffer through half of what YJ went through, and he was a mess throughout, but I still liked him a lot as the comedic relief of the show.

Totally! I agree, LJK is so beautiful isn't he? I remember when he opened the mask and said cool! And his voice, such an elixir of manliness and I melted right away. Although I don't understand why many people complaint abt the editing and the music. Maybe because I don't really know how to nitpick. Though I notice that Cinderella and 4 knights has such cliche music, I cringed many times but I kept going back for JIW.haha. Cringe and then swoon.

100% agree to what you say on W. The reason I dropped the drama was because I can't stand her character aynmore.

Tbh, I skip so much of her scenes and she didn't stand out much to me in the drama?? I think she barely did anything while Jongsuk did everything. I know probably her character is supposed to be like that, but that's what I cannot stand.

I could relate to the professor so much everytime I watch W lol

I wish I didn't agree, I had such high hopes for W. And I adored the beginning, but, yeah, I dropped it after episode 12. So close to the end, yet not enough motivation to finish.

Same here. I noticed that I could not get invested in YJ - KC 2.0 love story. I think the only way would have been to watch him fall for her again knowing nothing about their past. That could have been great. It was sweet to see how he treasured her as his only family, but the thrill of romance was not there anymore. That made me question myself about the nature of romantic love and how important are shared memories and built up of momentum...
Anyway, maybe KC 2.0 was not the problem itself, but the way the story unfolded from episode 7 till the end. I think W could have benefit from a larger number of episodes and the writer having more time to prepare a more round script.

I have been AWOL from Kdramaland due to real life, but I'm glad that when I came back , I found my "welcome back fix" with Moonlights drawn by clouds.
This show is definitely SQUEE worthy:
I'm calling it my saeguk Coffee Prince with its beautiful confession and all....
The Mane of Glory from woori BY( I believe it comes thisclose to JIW's to die for mane from Return of Iljimae)
The main OTP couple is so sweet that I'm due to see a dentist soon.
And what not to like about PBG- yeah, I know I will burn in H. E. double hockey stick but hey, that's where my Elite membership from ICOMYM comes in handy....
Yeah- flame's on ??????
PS I'm asking PD nim to forgo real history and let our Crown Prince to live happily ever after with Ra On....you've changed other historical facts already what's another bending of truth, right???

Literally mooning through the week for every Mon-Tues Moonlight in the Clouds fix.

Having a serious drama draught here, but finally The Wolgeosu Tailor Shop catches my attention with quirky heart warming characters to root for, excellent acting all around. Any Beanies watching this?

I'm waiting for the main leads to develop more, not disappointed at this time...really enjoying the entire cast of Laurel Tree Tailors.

As for Fantastic, I'm holding out (no doubt unrealistically) for Ji Soo and Park Si Yeon to get to know each other while he is suddenly in the hospital...even phone calls. Anything, writers!!

Olympics over, but 2nd to Last Love entirely preempted this week, darn! Also enjoying Flower In Prison, Moon Lovers, & Moonlight DBC.

Limit myself to 2 hours a night...KD is my drug of choice, but I've been known to get way out of hand so this is my maintenance dose...

Every week, I wait for Moonlight Over Clouds, Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo, (just finished) Uncontrollably Fond, Cinderella and Four Knights, and Jealousy Incarnate. I used to be like you - an addict. Ohh I'm probably watched more than you since I also watching daily drama..LOL.

But not now. I still watching a lot, but there is no single show that I'm addicted to, means I don't care if I skip any episode. Sometimes just reading the recap & comments are lot more fun. Probably the last one was Age of Youth.

Fantastic is a good show too. I'm.more invested on the characters' growth not the plot itself.

College Started so no time to breathe.

Just Watching moon lovers - Sometimes i cry imagining what it could have been but still the show has captured my heart like no other.

And i think about 80% of the viewers are glued to the screen for one reason only - Lee Jun Ki. He is making me feel so much for Wang So that i want to reach into the screen and give him a hug. Where is a W tablet when you need one?

I wish i had a magic eraser that could scrub out all the extra childish princes so we can focus on the main players and let the show be awesome.

I was ultimately disappointed with the W finale - but I felt surprisingly indifferent once the final credits went up. My excitement for this show fizzled out ridiculously fast over the second half of the run. I barely made it through to the end, just to see what would happen - glad I can let this show go now. Bye, Chul and Yeon-joo, enjoy your 'happy ending'.

Moonlight Drawn By Freaking Clouds though. This show is what gets me through the week(end) - bring on MONDAY.

I've been listening to Moonlight Drawn By Clouds soundtracks all week long because I can't get enough of this drama. I love the songs. And that one of Sung Si Kyung was beautifully moving.

My internet was down two days ago and the only episodes besides the ones I've watched was Reply 1988. I'm up to episode 8 now. So far, all episodes have made me teary-eyed (some episodes made me bawling my eyes out) Should I continue with this? Is this worth it? Sunwoo and his little sister are so cute though.

I just finished R88 this week and I think it's both worth it and not at the same time. The first half is the best, then I started to lose interest. And the episodes became almost 2hrs long, so there's that. Sunwoo and his family/relationships is THE reason I kept watching and his storyline is really good right up until the last couple of episodes at least.

The general consensus is that the R88 is the best reply series. I dropped it because i got tired of the disproportionate amount of time we spent on the adults when all i wanted was to see the kids.

But for most people the adult storyline was the main draw. How the show wasn't about husband puzzle but the whole community. If you are enjoying the time spent on all the moms and dads, you should definitely continue.

same here. personally i like both so much that it's hard to pick a favorite. i think they're different. reply 1988 was more nostalgic and emotional (not to say that 1997 wasn't, but it had a bit more spunk and sass in general). i do think that 1997 was more tightly edited and jung eun-ji's performance never grows old.

Personally, I liked AM/R88 better than '97 since the whole crazy, girl-fandom part wasn't that interesting and the "love triangle" was kinda ughh (incestuous).

But while I enjoyed all the parts of '88, can understand that some found it to be overly long; '97 was tighter and more concise (since it didn't have to fill as much screentime).

'94 gets a bad rap by some (and some deserved criticism), but despite that, think I liked the characters in '94 the best.

0

@bd5 I prefer R97, probably because I was a late adolescent hitting the peak of my fangirling. R88 is my second in total because of the family. But we knew going into it, that the parents would be playing a bugger role this time.

R94 is my least favorite for full execution. But I'm totally with you about the characters. I had many things I wanted to change about R94: story, editing, length, ship that won, the imbalance of plot points. But I wouldn't change the characters one bit. They really felt like my roommates & friends. They affected me more than R97 and way more than the sleeper youth part of R88.

0

Yeah, Purp Owl - would have loved '94 if it hadn't concentrated so much on the "mystery husband" and was just about the "gang" living in that boarding house (w/ those 2 wacky, but caring parents) and growing closer to each other while having their squabbles, etc.

In a way, would have been great if it had been more like AoY (but still loved the characters in both).

I think R88 is just the most talked about. R97

It is a solidly written drama. Watch it on viki if you can as the songs are now subbed. They had a delayed license. And don't bother shipping the kids romance. But overall... really good drama. Long as heck but good solid episodes every time.

I've been reshuffling all Moonlight Drawn by Clouds OSTs all week long too, and I just love Sung Si-kyung soothing voice, plus ballads are just my fav. I'm itching to anything of Park Bo-gum too! So I ended up on youtube all day long just to watch Moonlight Drawn by Clouds short clips, BTS, NGs, even Park Bo-gum's CFs, and short clips of his past work. I ended up watching an MV of him and Seo In-guk of the drama I remember You, I think I'm gonna marathon that instead, Park Bo-gum was so intense there I cried a river for him. I already watched Reply 1988's ending, I know, I'm bad like that, I tend to skip over to ending before I watch something as a whole, I like to know I'm heading somewhere sunny in the end, hehe. So, I'll try Reply 1988 after Moonlight Drawn by Clouds end.

Everytime I'm on YouTube I'd click on anything PBG that I see right away only to realise that I've already watch the video but I still continue watching anyway.

0

I never understood why people raved about PBG in IRY. He was ok, nothing fantastic. Maybe because it was so opposite to his real life personality. SIG was amazing in that though. He was anti social, arrogant and obnoxious, yet still all heart and charm.

But more than the boys, I loved, loved, loved Jang Nara in it. It was my first show of hers, and she was this pocket size doll who would jump in and have fist fights with baddies outweighing her by 100 pounds.

The scene where she goads the psychopath to hit her instead of a civilian and then keeps fighting him despite getting pummeled was Gold. For me she was the star of the show

0

@bips99
Same here, I like Park Bo-gum but I've seen better acting /crown princes before in sageuks. Maybe because this prince is pretty cheesy and fluffy. A fan-girl's dream prince.
I can't believe Kim Yoo-jung is doing this but I think this is pretty much fun for her and she is outgrowing her teen years soon.

0

I do the same on youtube too!
My first encounter with PBG was Cantabile tomorrow where he made a really strong impression as a popular yet lonely famous cellist. I was surprised and impressed yet again by his chilling performance in IRY. I didn't watch both dramas for him though, but I caught the PBG fever after these dramas.
And I watched R88 for him, although 80s-type dramas are not my cup of tea, but I ended up loving all the residents of Songsamdong.
I was kinda sceptical on this sageuk prince role at first, but trust PBG to nailed it and made the role his, yet again.

0

@bips99 @kiara PBG wont be an actor that i'll avoid, but to be fan... i dont think so. I just watched him in IRY, but for me Seo In Guk was the one who made me love that drama more. (and Jang Na Ra too).

I foresee PBG will reach his Hallyu status after Moonlight (is he already?).

0

@sera
He's not someone I'd follow but I won't avoid him either. He is pretty much lovable.

I think Moonlight has a huge impact because this is his first lead role. He already has a flourishing career so it was just a matter of time.

0

@bips99 Well, you don't have to understand, to each his own. I really love Park Bo-gum in I Remember You, I think if Min was played by someone who couldn't bring out the emotional hurt and longing he had for Hyun, the reunion they had when Hyun confronted Min would have fallen flat, but Park Bo-gum brought out the same emotional intensity that matched Seo In-guk in that scene, and for that alone, he's winning to me. The scene where Park Bo-gum said teary-eyed to Seo In-guk "You didn't even recognize me" still gets me everytime.

@Kiara I don't know about better acting / crown prince in sageuk but Park Bo-gum made Yeong alive for me, and that's good enough for me.

@maryxiah - 'i don't understand' is just a standard expression to emphasize how one doesn't agree with the general sentiment. I'm not actually questioning people's choice or taste or asking them to explain or god forbid justify it to me. I do know - to each his own.

0

@bips99 Ah, forgive me. I took it too literally.

If Moonlight were to first time I have seen PBG I would totally overlook his talents bec I'm allergic to swoony leads especially with bad guy vibe. Fortunately he grew on me in IRY and totally won me over with Taek. He has his own style in acting that shines tho all diverse and layered roles despite of his lack of experience, that's why he gets my full attention every scene he is in. If not best he has so much potential as actor that's for sure. Now he gets to be nice, scary, swoony and comedic with one character who can switch between those in split seconds without seeming like someone who has multiple personality disorder lol so imo he simply gets all credits he deserves.

0

@bips99 @kiara

I was in awe with PBG in IRY because that was my first encounter with him.

Out of nowhere, this fresh-faced rookie came into the screen, so handsome yet so chilling. Thought he was just an idol actor but he proved me wrong, he was freaking good. His micro expressions are so good he made Min a loveable character despite his uhmm murdering tendencies. I feel like he's doing a lot better job as psychopath than the adult doctor.

When I found out what is he like in real life, I am even more mind blown. This boy is just pure talent and I hope he goes a long way.

In saying that, IRY is still a SIG show and the drama won't be as brilliant as it is without SIG.

I've yet to tune into MDBC, but wanted to vouch for PBG's portrayal of Min in IRY. He was really good and his performance was on par with the rest of the cast, most of whom were a lot more experienced than him. He moved from ruthless killer to vulnerable brother so effortlessly. Him and SIG were the lifeblood of IRY.

Difference of opinions and tastes, that's all. That's what makes this site interesting.
I know that not everyone will like the dramas that I like or the actors that I love. I don't see it as some kind of competition on who's taste is better.

I'm just not into him to be honest. The sageuk genre is my baby and I have my favorites that I've been following for years. Kim Yoo-jung happens to be one of those that has been consistently great from the get-go.

0

@inxomnia I'll agree that IRY wouldn't be the same without SIG and PBG but Nara eonnie was amazing. And some of the cameos were fantastic.

GHJ is indeed lovable and the queen of "dorkiness" (and romcoms); she has a very expressive face and when she makes all those different facial expressions, it's very natural.

There are other actresses who have similar talent w/ making varied facial expressions w/o looking stupid/unnatural - such as Seo Hyun-jin, Park Bo-young, Kim Seul-gie or Kim So-hyun.

One of the reasons why decided to drop "Drinking Solo" (aside from finding none of the characters appealing or interesting and not finding much by the way of humor, unlike in "Let's Eat") was that couldn't get over Park Ha-sun making those facial expressions.

Just felt weird and unnatural and not fitting of PHS at all.

Maybe she is just forcing (and over-exaggerating) things a bit.

Oddly enough, found Kim Tae-hee really charming when she was doing something similar in "My Princess" (KTH actually has a pretty good sense of timing for comedy and the better writing by way of dialogue probably plays a good part as well).

Couldn't agree more about GHJ's chemistry with her leading men!! She's got a lovely, timeless feminine charm and elegance about her, that doesn't depend on youth or aegyo.

They really upped the attraction factor with GHJ and GKP in Ep 8 (GKP's also looking so manly and hot that it sometimes induces breathing difficulties - a minor inconvenience)!

Plus, I'm loving Pyo Na Ri's fashion - that retro outfit she had on with the turquoise earrings was just showstopping! Then that royal blue dress that Jung-won made for her ... she carries clothes so well!!

Alright, I luurve JJS and GKP, but at the end of the day, I'm first and foremost a GHJ fan!

I think I may be in the minority where I didn't swoon as much of SJS and GHJ in Master's Sun, although they did have good chemistry. Now It's OK It's Love? I literally squeal everytime when JIS and her are together, they definitely had a lot more skinship on that drama *fans self*

She somehow portrays similar characters in her dramas which somehow puts some people off, but I'm enjoying it more because I think in a way she adds a bit of her real self which makes her acting more authentic to me.

I loved laica's description of jealousy incarnate, for a show which has basically no plot, I never realize each hour passing at all. Its such a fun show to watch. I feel on a high after watching this show.

And I watched ji soo's scenes again and again in fantastic, he is just so adorable. And I ll happily rewatch his old dramas again, so he should take his time and fully recover.

None of the currently airing shows grabs me. Moonlight Drawn by Clouds is one I watch occasionally, but I have to be in just the right mood for it and am several episodes behind. W never did much for me (loooong post/rant in OT this week is proof and explanation as to why), so glad it's over, making way for newer, hopefully better shows. C+4 - once I heard Hye Mi is suddenly front and center I lost all interest; don't want to waste another 10 hours of my life on this drama. 1N2D - sort of losing interest lately, which makes me sad. I wonder who their new editor/caption-writer is, because it's no longer as fun or interesting... Didn't even finish the last episode yet.

So I've been coping by watching some already completed dramas:
Finished The Good Wife. Gosh it's good. SO good. It's my second favorite drama of the year so far, right after TF38. Yoo Ji Tae creeped me out and made me want to smack him in the face, Jeon Do Yeon was stellar and the rest of the cast was just awesome, including Nana. Happy that LWG could hold his own against the veteran actors.
Reply 1988: I so wanted to love this. And I did, really. But then the second half happened and everyone started to get sick/hurt, the love triangle went nowhere and I never felt their chemistry or connected with them as characters. And the ending was disappointing in that some of the major characters didn't have a proper conclusion. Sun Woo and Bo Ra made me fall head over heels in love though, Second Couple Syndrome like crazy! And the families were all a lot of fun and full of heartwarming moments.
You're All Surrounded: I watched the ten first episodes in one day, right after finishing the last three episodes of W LOL. I'm really loving this show, flaws and all, especially how Dae Gu is in so many ways still a scared and hurt little kid, which just breaks my heart into a million pieces. The relationships are all tugging on my heartstrings and I like how it's a less tense, more fun cop-version of City Hunter.
Full House: Oh, the calamitous clothes, the horrendous hair and the freaking fannypacks - please make it stop! This show drives me round the bend, especially the female lead and her "friends", so I'm watching with one finger on the ff button. Just finished ep 6 and basically ff-ed through it all, yet still knew what was going on. The fact that this is the drama and acting performance (Rain's) that inspired Lee Jong Suk to become an actor cracks me up. I hope he's found other sources of inspiration by now LOL.

Anxiously awaiting Shopping King Louie and zippy Siggie, while hoping that some of the other new shows coming up will somehow end up making me interested as well, because right now they aren't.

Jealousy Incarnate - "The family that bails a relative together, stays together." It's my new Wednesday crack and I love it down to the banter, the secrets, the cheesy goodness and yes, all the crazy jealousy in between!

Moondays - I heard it's a thing now and both shows are great on different levels of hot swoony goodness.

Cinderella - It's like ramyun, you know too much is bad for you but somehow you still give in to the craving.

Moon Lovers / Scarlet Heart: adding my prayers that the ratings go up!

Sure, there's a lot of flaws, but it seems like it's being bashed way beyond justification, when you look around at some other shows that aren't exactly innocent-as-snow themselves (UF, I'm looking at you), and what's worse, Scarlet Heart barely even got out of the start gates before everyone pounced on it.

Having watched Lee Jun Ki's V app shows and the Running Man ep (Ep 314) promoting the show, I'm feeling really sorry for the cast and crew who worked so hard for this!

From the number of comments on the recaps and threads, SH has lots of supporters, so I hope the power of Beanie Prayers helps, even if we can't impact the ratings directly!

Drinking Solo - I'm no drinker so I'm glad the drinking isn't more than the usual kdrama drinking scene..I love the quirky characters and the lovelines (except GongMyung..haih. he ain't a competition to JinSang)

Jealousy Incarnate : I thought the Jealousy is refering to Hwasin only but it seem it's a recurring theme on both ajummas and the kids. I don't exactly hate ppalgang but I hope Chiyeol is right that she doesn't love both of them. Haha and er Rak Chef is Jungwon's Uncle? Rak called his mother noona?? The family is like weekend drama..everyone is related.

Cinderella : why does it seem to slow down after the kiss? Why no more new mission? Give me fluff!

Gapsoon : wake me up when Gabdol grows up. Segye and Jaesoon relationship are weird. One married a choding and one married a cheapskate.

Laurel Tree Tailor : Here for RaMiRan. I vote for main lead change to Cha In Pyo. The current leads lack in chemistry.

Fried chicken is my least favorite fried food (i know, shocking but a childhood trauma cause it) but I would buy Chicken everyday if Samdo cooks it too.

With him donning suits, we're gonna see less muscle which makes me think that is the main reason Sun Nyeo wants him to stick with frying chicken. Lol

Classic song by green day! Haha. I'm hoping he'll change by this year or I'll drop..it's 50 episode for Gapsoon right? I can't possibly start new year with Gapdol still behaving like a bratty mama boy.

Yes less muscles but I feel he is hotter in suit LOL. Sun Nyeo should feel grateful since he could be the only who will get too his muscles after this, :P

I dont know if you've read this but it could be a SPOILER.

SOmeone told me that GD will pass the exam first, and these two will break up, probably due to pressures from his mom. They probably would be love triangle as well.

I hope they will reduce the episodes. But the standard for weekend drama always 50 episodes.

for "W"
allow me to quote 2 sayings from EP16 alone:
"Just like normal people, we’ll live a normal life like them." from Yeonjoo choosing to live a normal life, with the 2 men of her life, to stay living is what matters to her, even if both behind bars. Agreed.
"Though it may be boring and ordinary, I hope their story will continue for 50 years. Just like other ordinary couples."
Chul, or should i said, it also the choice of Song Jaejung.

i am surprised with the ending, i actually liked it, because i am all along simple, awed by the first half of the shows and rules / variables, yet also by the chemistry of OTP (see, i told u, i am shallow like any shallow noona as could be.) maybe am the rare ones that didn't find any problem with second half, while i did go round reading more than 6 recaps sites, many recapers started to find "only rules is no rules or rules keep changes replaced by new rules" craps.. while i continued to be memerized by Yeonjoo's greatness in characters and Chul's ever spiral downhill tragedies.
i wanted a happy ending for most of the dramas i loved, i started to see the theme of "Happy Ending" keep popping up. realising (may be its me alone). afterall, another theme Song Jaejung wanted to bring out to discuss, besides choices we make in life that 'becometh us", is the Themes of Happy Ending, what is Happy Ending to Different people. or like Jaya bean said, a Happy Ending that satisfy, or is that a need for Happy ending. Does Happy Ending be tainted without the answers dealt with regarding the variables, the diff time-gaps, how did the rest of W-comic stil continue to run, why dad can replace Chul to still and what variable is that that make Chul a real human... why don't draw bullet proof vest in the first place.... i chose to ignore and happily enjoy the awesome acting of OTP and supporting casts while the eps speeding to ends.....
Like every fangirling, at first my idea of happy ending is apart of everyone else, we fangirls just hope to see our OTP get their Happy Ever After, see more kisses, more back hugs, yes... never ending demand of Option 4 before credits roll. that was my initial idea of Happy ending.

as 14 Sep approached, i ws so angst by worring that Chul's life-long angst and desire for happy ending as simple as living a life as a normal human with the woman he discovered he can loved, apart from his one-dimension set-up as a shallow kick-ass hero. that he can selflessly loved a woman to give up his own happy ending or even life for her. the more i wish for him to have happy ending with Yeonjoo. then i was so willing to ditch my demand for more passionate kisses and Option 4 for just a happy ending. be it Boring and ordinary.
true enough, Song jaejung, while did 'fail' many without givning them awes and wonders and most important 'ANSWERS". she gave them, Happy Ending. while not satisfying all the Comic fans were bought W-35 who still want to see villain killed and Chul lived, neither did Song satisfied many in our Realworld who still wants answers.
i think she so far, satisfied at least One Answer: what is that One True Happy Ending, that you and me want for our own life. down the road, you and me, will not seek adrenaline rushed kisses, One hot Option 4 night, Hottie hunk to marry, fulfilling all tasks in Guru-romance Books...
all we ask for our own life, none other than, a Boring and ordinary and real, peace, Happy days.. for 50 years or more, like any other normal couple. By Happy, we don't mean without argues and quarrel, we just means to be happy and peaceful to be allow to see our loved ones daily till we grew old. as much as we want that for our own llife... we didnt want that kind of peace and happiness for characters we grew to loved in a dramas.. that is the irony of being a fan.

ep 16, the saddest scene of cause if Yeonjoo watched Chul slumped to the side, supposed to died before her, and next sec she teleport to real world without ever hold him for a last time, or comfort him before his departing... that ws heart-wrenching sad. But, who chill me more is:
"W35, most people didn't doubt the sad ending. But they considered it as a believable sad ending."

that was a topic i keep 'choosing agree to disagree" with some fans, regarding sad ending. i know lots of people couldnt mind sad ending "as long as it makes sense and believable"
i am for one, couldnt easily moved on and embraced sad ending, as long as it make the story moving or memorable. Remember Dad once told Chul, if he give Chul a happy ending, then his story cannot sell anymore. so is some fans saying in past, that when a story's plot was awesome and thilling, and villains crafty, sometime for the sake of awe-factor or 'in realities tragedies does happen' they dont mind hero died, couples seperated, open ending, oosh! while i dont mind this kinda of ending happens in hollywood movies, it happen all the time there.
i wish to see, hero survived, OTP stayed together in the end, evil destroyed, truth prevail in my own everyday life, so i wanted the same for my heros and my OTP. when i returned home after a hard day work fighting colleagues, i wanted to see "people that i grew to loved for a few weeks" stay happy. to have myself thrilled, to feel good in watching a Art-house-quality-drama, then don't mind sad ending. that will not do, for me.
so, after all, so be it, if only some fangirls left, together with me. we are satisfied with Song Jaejung's boring, ordinary, happy ending. because she wants that for her own life too, so did we want that for our own life. so i dont mind Chul and Joo goes that way.
boring, but happy.

thank you for the essay, I replied too fast and I agree with you,

I am invested in KC happy ending and for me that's the purpose and the real conflict in the story, no one wants to sacrifice themselves for the happy ending they both wants,
KC doesn't want to stop interfering to find the culprit so OSM can still sell his book or OSM sacrifice the book+his ego by giving KC the ending,

>>sometime for the sake of awe-factor or ‘in realities tragedies does happen’ they dont mind hero died, couples seperated, open ending,<<
....i wanted to see “people that i grew to loved for a few weeks” stay happy . . . ..

so I am staying ^^

I think happy ending is when the character finds the answer, either it's bad or good,
I need the purpose to be completed since the story will never finish unless all characters disappear aka passed away, then it's the real ending for me
when it ends like a continuation, I find it as satisfying ending because they finally find the stable ground for their life,

Grave of Fireflies has a happy ending but sad story,

i guess... like what Yeonjoo said, and so true, just like us, our story is still ongoing, our own 'ending' is still unclear yet. while we do not worry about my own ending or you, yours. we are clear about one thing. i want to live this life, today , tomorrow, sincerely, peacefully, lovingly with the loved ones in my family. in the end, does the comic fan world need to know the real story of Chul, that he died or not, did they ever bothered to angst or yes, even if they angst to see Chul died. (while some got their answer and moved on while Chul died is fine. how cruel.). that shows the same sentiments in our real life... what does it affect us truly if Chul lives or died, we just moved on to another drama, then it just goes on....
but Chul and Yeonjoo, its their live that they matters. they need not answer to another, how to live, I guess Song Jaejung show one thing matters in life, to everyone, appreciating your loved one daily. leave that Ending part to the end. yes, that doesnt answer many questions. but you see, life does goes on with So Bong, crazy dogs, the comic world fans, sad ending or happy ending, it actually means little to them in the end. But it will mean Hell or Heaven to the DIrect person experiencing it.
of cause, i do hope SOng JaeJung were given more time and more eps to wrap up those answer, she can still squeeze in the answers in between this other wise very realistic Happy ending. from what i know. she wrote 17 eps instead of 16, and mentioned, she ws not used to handling long eps drama of late. thus the managment of first 8 eps of out, and later on, by then, she found she has not enough time to squeeze in all that she wanted to say... so scenes from her original script were cut off in the end to requried it to be 16 eps. i beleived if given more eps , say 18 or 20 eps from the beginning, she can still develop the whole drama, esp toward the last 2 to 3 eps, to answer many crucial questions... yet , still give Chul and Yeonjoo the same treatment of happy ending.
yes, i agreed with you, that happy part wasnt complete, since your questions and many of mine not answered. i read in fact some of the ardent ChulJoo fans/recappers were feeling unsatisfied because they expected certain key question dealt with. And it wasnt.
but all in all, you and me, and them, doesnt matter to the lives of Chul and joo. i still say, i will give up anything, to see them stayed together and "they" be happy.

but will be truly happy having many questions in answered answered, which is what make this show click in the first place. just like everyone else, "our" happiness be more complete in watching this show then.

Ahh, this is bound to be such an unpopular opinion but I feel like Chae Soo Bin has ridiculous amounts of chemistry with Park Bogum AND Jinyoung. I actually wasn't a fan of hers post Sassy Go Go as I know many people were, and I was all poised to be neutral to her or to see her as the regular interfering second lead thrown in so the lead romance doesn't progress way more than 8 episodes should allow it to-- but now I really love her awkward, obvious, scheming self (both Lee Yeong and Yoon Sung caught on to her plans immediately.) To the point that I spend a lot of the episodes wishing that she has more interaction with both of them in it, which feels like such a betrayal. The moment when Lee Yeong smiled up at her after she pretended she has absolutely NO IDEA what he was talking about re: the shortcut for dogs and HOW DARE he think this about a LADY like her, I was smitten. (A lot of it probably has to do with Park Bogum's face.) Also some people were talking about Byung Yeon and the princess, and I couldn't figure out whether that was mere speculation or canon, and now that it's entered my mind, I'd really like to see it, the princess and her hilariously ridiculous antics with Gat Byung Yeon and his super-serious smoulder of seriousness? YES, PLEASE. (Although I also really ship him with Ra On and hope he has lots of moments of 'omg, I was sleeping in the same room as a girl all this while' next episode. I'm flexible that way. And I wouldn't even mind if we get to see what kind of chemistry Soo Bin and Dong Yeon share, since I'm already enjoying her with everyone else.)

In other news, I am 100% smitten by both Scarlet Heart and the DB community's engagement with it. Currently at 1035 comments in just the 7th episode recap, is this for real?! Also, the discussions ranging from history, philosophy, politics to literally film-making and editing (not always for the happiest of reasons, lol), I can't ever remember having been part of this level of engagement, mostly because I did not live-watch Healer.

Totally agree with you on Chae Soo Bin. I *wanted* to loke her as an actress in Sassy Go Go but her character was just gaaaahhh! So I wanted to see her in a rolethay I could actually root for. Pleased that she's not annoying or psychotic (yet) but not dull either. Kinda shipping her now with Jinyoung because the crown prince is clearly off the market. Though I still want her to give Raon a good fight.

I think not a lot of people is hating Chae Soo Bin character as hate her so much,
they probably so aware that she jus so good and she'll bring the problem because it hurts when we have problem

I like her character but that doesn't mean I'll agree with anything she did,

for a community, I just used to visit Soompi thread cause people they are posting daily and give many critics, idea and it easier to find someone who replied to you, they also make the shipper only thread for people who has different ships, also have bunch of great fanart posted and translated many things,
but even there, I can't really read all of that, I don't think I can read thousands comment on DB either and it's amazing to see many people passionate about it,
I assume the more information you have about certain drama or actor can make the discussion spark, you've seen them for a long time and have different impression each time and it's nice to share with people that also have the same feeling,

I like the fact that she is not part of the Andong Kim clan. Yeong is head over heals for his eunuch but she can't save him from the Kims like Ha-Yeon could.
She is important when it comes to the history because her reign as queen mother put an end to the Kim's domination.

I hope that she is more politically sassy rather than being the jealous 2nd lead witch that we love to hate. The novel was written by a fangirl so I hope the writer for the drama would change it.

The way she changes the history to fit her own story. She is obviously a fan of the handsome Crown Prince Hyomyeong but his real story was too tragic.

Let's not even talk about the skinship in the novel.

I liked chae soo bin too! Both in sassy go go and in moonlight. She is endearing in moonlight with her not being afraid to go after what she wants in what she thinks is a clever way but extremely transparent to people who are concerned. I am shipping her with jin young too because they both are good people and deserve someone good.

And I am not watching scarlet heart, so I guess I am missing out on all the fun. But, all the mixed reactions about the show is just confusing me and I am relatively new to kdramas so I have not watched any of lee jun ki's previous shows, so I have no motivation to start it at all.

@Imbuck: I think I ship her character with Bogum a little more, which of course is road to nothing but heartbreak, arghhh. I've just found their scenes incredibly adorable. On the other hand, her interaction with Jinyoung was the first time I was genuinely interested in his character so I'd be happy on that road too. I like him fair enough, but Yoon Sung reminds me of so many second leads in dramaland that I can never get much into his interactions with Ra On. So I really hope his loveline with Ha Yeon starts soon, since I like the idea of them scheming to break up their match and then falling in love along the way.

RE: Scarlet Heart, that's a tough one. Personally, I'm not a Lee Junki fan. I've never seen anything he's done since My Girl (which is not at all one of his finer moments, lol, though he did look like he came straight out of a manga), so I was pretty amazed by how incredibly good he is now. But he's not necessarily my main stake in the drama, I actually like quite a lot about it.

I think investment is always difficult to explain or comprehend, because the shows that I like the most may not necessarily technically be the best shows. I have been far, far more invested in lots of dramas which may be considered "objectively worse" than others that I haven't been invested in. Even right now, Moonlight is so amazing and well-directed, well-acted et al, but Scarlet and Jealousy Incarnate and their quirky, oddly-directed, unpredictable and all-over-the-place narratives have my heart (I was even super invested in Cinderella in their first 6 episodes and then lost all investment by the 7th episode in a flash.) And while the DB community is always engaged, the Scarlet level of engagement on DB is something I've only seen for a handful of dramas before, so it's definitely fun to be in!

But I do think that reactions of those starting now are going to be colored by reviews and ratings and controversies. I have a lot of friends who went into the drama blind, not having heard anything about it and only vaguely knowing the actors, and fell completely in love with it and didn't realize all the things "wrong" with it, till they came online to read more about it and heard of all the issues. But once you know what's wrong with it, it becomes hard to ignore for a lot of people who aren't equally invested as others. SH is a very, very your mileage may vary sort of a drama, lol, but it's the one I watch immediately as soon as it's subbed.

Wow! Your fluency with words is amazing, zoe! Now, I am not sure how to give a reply to something so eloquent! so, I am just going to use your words ;)
>>I like the idea of them scheming to break up their match and then falling in love along the way.
yes, I love this idea, too.
>>I think investment is always difficult to explain or comprehend.
This is true, it differs for everybody and I love jealousy incarnate too despite its offbeat concepts, too many characters or rather because of its offbeat concepts and too many characters because the characters are so interesting and I really want to know what happens to them. I guess, in the end, despite popular opinions, what matters is what we like, if we like a show, we should just watch it.

And I understand about watching a drama without any expectations because I watched healer before knowing about dramabeans only because I found the main leads attractive and I loved it. But, I was super shocked to know recently that it was not popular in korea and didn't have good ratings.

Thanks, Zoe. I'm with you on both Moon Lovers and Jealousy Incarnate. Sometimes you just love a drama for the characters and the story without really giving much thought about the technical aspects. And sometimes you can't even explain why you like a certain show but you are just excited to see every new episode and watch it unfold. It's like the first stages of being in love - you always want to be with the person you are in love and only see his/her good points. Neuroscience explained it as having high levels of dopamine in your brain that stimulates ‘desire and reward’ by triggering an intense rush of pleasure when you are in love. So, I guess we just can't help it when our brain releases too much dopamine when watching our favorite Korean dramas.

@Zoe: great point! Yes, I'm so glad about Chae Soo Bin's role in this drama! She's great!

Even at her evil worst in Sassy Go Go, I was still ready to like her if given a chance. So I'm not too afraid that she'll become one of those uselessly annoying second female leads who are oblivious to the thoughts and feelings of those around them (like Princess Yeonhwa, or Hyeji in C4K).

I'm actually surprised so many people disappointed with W's happy ending. I know it's not perfect and the show had been convoluted since ep 8 or so but I think it's still awesome, cool show. Probably one of the best dramas this year.
I didn't mind about the rules or lack of rules either. I guess I'm just happy the main leads get together considering the threats of murders and bloods in almost every freaking episode!
Koreans also rarely produce sci-fi dramas so their inexperience is forgivable.

also surprised about W's ending acceptance, wasn't there for a long time,
I think I write one comment and left,
I like the ending, I don't need really need many answers because I have my own answer and I don't think the rule answer is really that important to change the result or the feeling for the ending,
it's not like inception ending that can change the whole perception IMO,
I also hope this drama can open many sci-fi drama probabilities, like the mental health theme and time travel theme that getting boost after a good starter,

Idk if we can do this
but I think it gonna be fun if we can make HISHE, How It Should Have Ended ala Kdrama like the youtube channel??

as an example in Full House,
SHK didn't seat next to Rain in the plane and the story just END . ..*
in UF, Jitae accepted No Eul confession in that night and they leave so it END .... *
in Gumiho, Lee Seung Gi starts facing reality and learns so it END . . . *

The biggest thing for me is rules didn't get fumbled, ignore, or turned over. They used the rules to their advantage as I hoped the would. It seem like the biggest issuis how the rules were handled, but they were handled correctly so I don't get why people focus on them.

Moonlight - had to rewind every other minute because I kept on staring at their faces and beautiful expressions I actually skipped the dialogue

Moon Lovers - i feel like playing "spot the difference" between the 2 versions. I'm still fine with it as long as there's Lee Jun Ki

Drinking Solo - Gong Myung and his shoulders. Deedoodee

W - I patiently waited for mindblowing answers but I only got "Kang Chul is alive"

Jealousy Incarnate - What did Pyo Nari do in her past life I wanna know!!!

Cinderella - stopped in the middle of the episode. Will continue once I calm down

Sukina Hito - cohabitation + love triangle + food + yamazaki kento = ?

Moon Lovers: Not the best story but i can't leave this show because of my Joon Ki and Ha Neul. But i love the episode 7 i rewatched it like 5x this week. ?

W: i stopped watching it around ep 7 too. The main girl fixated over a manwha character that almost killed her dad leave a bad taste in my mouth. I just watch the last 5 minutes and even the sweet moments looks bland to me. And judging from the dissatisfaction of the fans. I do not regret dropping this drama right away.

COME BACK AJUSSI: Yes. I started watching this because of good reviews. Some said that this is a good drama and was just a victim of DOTS fever. And so far. I'm liking it.?

MDBC: To continue the sentiments of the recaps...squeeeee~~
"I will now treat you as the most precious lady in the world. May I do that?" Seja, no need to ask, at this stage you can do whatever to me (and thousands of other women as well probably). ?? You know a drama does everything right when you also care about the story of side characters and cry over their puppet play mainly because it's perfectly embedded in the narrative.
And to those who haven't watched this drama (umm...but why?) there's a 2h special that summed up the first 8 episodes, so no more excuses, chop chop. ?

Scarlet Heart: Can editors' faces also be stolen when they eff up? At this stage I'm not surprised about the shitty ratings anymore because how are people supposed to enjoy a drama when apparently we should know the novel, the C-version and have watched the differently edited versions in order to make any sense of? How it's possible to mess up like this when you have such good source material is still beyond me but I'm going to be very aware of PD Kim Kyu-tae from now on (same goes to Lee Kyung-hee on the writers' front).
Sigh, and I can't help but feel that if LJK wasn't casted at least 50% of the viewers would be gone already...and sorry EXO fans but I don't want to see any more of the 10th prince. You can be endearingly childish and charmingly annoying...but he's just childish and annoying and to quote Hae-su "That's enough now, stop that."
And considering we have so many brothers but no feelings of bromance at all is another directorial/writing fail (imo the scenes that have all princes in them are actually the worst, go figure)

Jealousy Incarnate: Luff it!! But can't Na-ri just end up with hot chepu if she can't have both guys? Show, don't kill my brOTP! And we've had JJS dance and sing already, now all that's missing is him playing the guitar. ? Since OSTs are such a hot topic on DB these days, I need to praise the music director in here, it's completely wacky but done so so right.

C4K: ???
I've already seen yesterday's episode and it's boring me to tears now. What happened to the mindless cotton candy fluffy show from earlier and HW's mission in bringing the cousins closer together? Instead HJ's boring story is overtaking the show and I can already see it coming that the others are going to join her with their own overdramatic angsty BS soon. Maybe we should rename this into "4 Dramaqueens and the 2 abandoned and forgotten Knights" then? Everyone else has become an extra, hell you know there's something very wrong when the housekeeper (who I like but she's just a side character goddammit) has more screen time than the supposedly other two knights. Even the angel army has run away once Miss Blankface moved into the house and who could blame them.

W: Three days later I've come to terms with the ending and am glad it at least was somehow narratively coherent even when a lot of questions were left out in the open. This drama really should've been 20 episodes from the beginning and completely pre-produced. But on a positive note the cinematography and CGI stayed very impressive until the end. And I might have to change up my vote for Best Villain which was Hong-joo from MotW until dad/new-face made an appearance.
In the end I do feel this show is a lot better when marathoned, having to wait for it week after week, then being thrown out of the loop due to the Olympics, killed a lot of the suspense. Nevertheless W remains in my top10 dramas of 2016 and I'll anticipate Song Jae-jung's next drama. Can she maybe pair up with Kim Won-suk? That would really give us a perfect drama.
And now from W-niverse to Gukkiverse, life is good. \^o^/

Drinking Solo: I wonder how many liters of beer HSK has drunk by the end of this show. ?

Fantastic: "Foot-Caprio", "I'm a cool guy, American style, okay?" Park Dang-wook is killing me. ??
I need to stop being so invested in the dongsaeng-ssi & noona-ssi (seriously how cute is that?) relationship since this will most likely end very soon. And somebody give me the number of the Truck of Doom, that family from hell + mistress bitch need to go pronto!
On another note how is it possible that Park Si-yeon is 14 years older than Ji Soo. ?

Second To Last Love: up to Ep. 9, the Subway monster has struck again. Slowly losing interest in this...the leads' backstory is going wayyyyy too slow.

------------

Another highlight of my week....
Boys Over Flowers: Ep.1 with JB and GF's commentary.
Finally managed to watch it, wow, what a messy show. Anyway ngl I did it more so for the commentary than the show itself. ? Don't think I have caught much of the plot or dialogue, was cracking up too much over the comments but doesn't look like I've missed that much anyway. ? I just wanna thank the PD for kicking out Kim Soo-hyun otherwise this would've been on my watched list already.

That's the main problem in the show. They don't know to makes the scenes flow as it should. I agree with you about The 10th prince. I think the editors think that increasing the scenes will increase the rate due to the fame of EXO. His childish behaviour will be good in show like "You are Beautiful" like Jeremy character but it is not in historical show. If you want to childish as historical character he should follow LJK act in iljimae.

I don't know why people still think idols bring ratings, this is not 2009 anymore. Most idol dramas have been flopping badly or were successful because of good script and PD like Reply series.

And even for foreign sales they are useless unless they are very well known individually and not just as a group, like TVXQ/JYJ kind of level.

After watching a fantastic video about what editors do, I'm firmly convinced that the editor of Moon Lovers should be shipped off to some island in order to repent for the crimes he/she has committed in dramaland. The flow of one episode is so messed up! It's crazy because live-shooting dramas can do far better, even though they have a lot less time to work with! The close ups are also poorly handled because a lot of them are so short that it allows for no emotion to come across the actors' faces.

Another thing, the director obviously didn't know how to handle such a large ensemble of characters. Instead of having everything flow naturally and setting up an actual environment, it's like the actors just have to wait for their turn to say their lines. D:

...but despite these complaints, I remain an avid viewer of this show. Argh, it frustrates me when I think of what could've been. T_T </3

Someone must be a fan of Na-eun in the production team because all those slo-mo beauty shots of her and her fan-blown hair are reallllllllyyyyyyy starting to make me roll my eyes. I signed up for a C & 4K with a spunky lead heroine as the receiver of our 4K's affection and a mission to bring the Kang family together... but now our heroine's lost most of her spunk and the missions are non-existent. I'd even rather more of the stepfamily being mean than Hye Ji being pathetic. I hate how right now Ha Won's and Hyun Min's life just revolves around Ji Woon and Hye Ji.

As an EXO fan, I'm upset that they over using Baekhyun. I hate that they are making him the targeted face when he's uri korean bacon. He's meant to be loved but wringing him out for ratings is quite rude. I don't know about South Korea and some other places but some international fans are not enthused about this. I don't want my Baek to be a reminder or the direct cause of this drama being runined.

Ugh! It's one thing is his character is important, if his character is convincing, his character is necessary for the drama, Baekhyun has a sliver of potentional. Then put him in where it cpunts. But don't just throw one of our boys in our face expecting that going to convince to watch a drama you didn't spending time writing, filming, and editing correctly. If this make bae's name and face synonymous with a fan hated drama, EXOLs will not be happy.

A Werewolf Boy: As mentioned in the Open Thread, this movie really blew me away and left me broken for the past few days. Cheol Su and his unconditional and persistent love just haunts me. The movie was beautiful, poignant and so emotional. Definitely one of my favourite movies. Consolidated my love for both Song Joong Ki and Park Bo Young x1000 and its the best I've seen from both of them, even though I've loved many of their previous roles - so raw and emotional.

W - Two Worlds: I really love this drama despite its flaws. I love the (two) world(s) it built, the questions it raised and the love story and couple. It was a wild ride and I love every minute of it, and I'm glad they got their somewhat happy ending as an ordinary couple. I'm still sad that this has ended though :(

Hot Blood Youth: I think I saw HBY this week... This wasn't perfect, and it was a little uncomfortable to see LJS get whipped around but I really liked the understated romance between Lee Jong Suk and Park Bo Young as well. PBY does spunky really well despite her cute looks. I also think she does romance really well... Her romances are never sultry or passionate or exciting or fanservice-y, but I always find them meaningful or courageous? I can't really explain, but I guess I find her eyes very expressive and moving and doesn't give off the typical K-romcom/fluffy vibe?

Always: I really liked this one as well. I loved the chemistry between Han Hyo Joo and So Ji Sub, and their low-key and natural love story. So Ji Sub was smoking hot here and Han Hyo Joo's perm was adorably hilarious (reminds me of the ep on Running Man where she had to get a perm hah).

Oh My Venus: I needed something light and breezy since I had too many feels otherwise, and just watched Always so more SJS :) It's doing the job, very easy to watch and doesn't require much thinking and it's still early days so nothing too frustrating and makjang yet. The only thing is it's making me feel a little guilty for not being as active as I should be...

Cinderella & Four Knights: Still cute and breezy, venturing into a tad annoying territory with the focus shifting to HJ randomly and shift away from Hyun Min's character development. It's like the writer did a switcheroo on Ji Woon's and Hyun Min's character, as if they cannot develop two male leads with personality at once.

AOHY: I think I'm dropping this because I'm happy that they're back together and I think that's a good place to leave it off because it's satisfying enough.

I was on such a K-movie roll this week, literally used to watch like a handful per year mainly due to stalking actors I love as well as for the low-commitment factor (look how that turned out, sigh). Still just sticking to the more romantic ones for now, though I'm keen to dip my toes into the bigger hits as well.

I read a comment somewhere along the lines of Song Joong Ki is an actor whose acting talent outshines his insanely good looks. I really have to agree with that, especially in relation to AWB. As handsome as he is, all I could think about or take away from the movie was the feelings and emotions he portrayed - the expressions on his face and in his eyes when he looked as Soon Yi.

I saw some interviews where he discussed how he had to act with his body, his eyes and even his breathing. It made me admire him x1000 as an actor.

I loved A Werewolf Boy so much. ?? It's a darn shame SJK and PBY haven't acted in a drama together since. The drama gods should make it happen! Their chemistry is so good. I prefer their chemistry to the DOTS romance tbh. I love SHG though. And I totally agree about it being some of their best work. I enjoyed Nice Guy and DOTS (Nice Guy moreso) but I still don't think they were SJK's best works. I really loved PBY in Oh My Ghostess though. She's perfection. But she's always good imo. ??

I loved Nice Guy as well, DOTS not so much. I just realised Song Joong Ki has pretty darn good luck with all the gorgeous actresses. However, I couldn't buy his romance with SHG for the first half of the drama. Who knows though, they had a lot of dating rumours after the show and plenty of shippers so maybe I'm just blind haha.

I loved PBY in OMG as well... I feel like she's an actor that helps elevate her co-stars' performances. I loved her chemistry with Kim Seul Gi and Jo Jung Suk. She synchronised with KSG 100%. I was also indifferent to JJS before OMG, but the show made me fall for his charms and it was largely due to his expression when he was trying not to smile at PBY's cuteness. Not to mention, the alternate ending for AWB with PBY rather than the older actress was just so much more emotional from both PBY and SJK.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds - It's funny to read all the squeeing over The Kiss and remain unaffected by it. I think I am immune to Park Bo Gum but damn, he's knocking it out of the park. My favorite scene this week was Gat Byung Yeon sewing the puppet. I swear Kwak Dong Yeon's deadpan expression kills me everytime.

I am almost afraid of being let down by MDBC every week yet they always rise to the occasion. There's not necessarily a lot of things going on but it's such a satisfying watch. And I say this without swooning over the OTP.

Moon Lovers - I gave up and read recaps for ep 7.

The comments went over 1000! I skimmed through but not all and realized most are fans or new fans of Lee Jun Ki. Confession - I can't get LJK. I tried and really tried this time. I even rewatched his scenes after reading fans' comments. Yeah, I am crazy. Since there's no one to keep me watching(sorry Ka Neul, see you next time), I find it hard to continue. I am going to read recaps and see if the show becomes better. It's sad because I was truly excited to see the Korean spin on BBJX. My initial misgiving turned out right. When the princes got cast, I had a feeling that the show was going out for massive fanservice. The hype and promotions proved the same. But the lovely posters and exciting trailer gave me false hopes. Imagine what it could have been!

Still missing AOY but I am loving Fantastic so far! I hate terminal illness trope but Kim Hyun Joo is stellar.

Laurel Tree Tailor - I am enjoying the show but Jo Yoon Hee makes me cringe. Is it her character or what she adds to it? I snorted out when Rocker dude said he couldn't be caught in a dating scandal. Gonna to keep watching for him and Mr Muscle Chicken Fryer.

tbh I had the moment when I just think, what if I just swapped KHN image and nuance in the 8th prince in BBJX, it makes everything even better,
not because 8th in the original is bad but I just find KHN with that hair+aura is better, he has those way to make you feel sad and root for him in feels,

reminiscing the OT question about actors you just can't be a fan of ,
I probably not a big fan for LJK either, I appreciate him, he is great but being a fan is a hard thing for me personally,

it has to be those moments when I find myself screencap the picture of ishihara satomi, go ayano or lee sang woo to realised that I am into someone at that moment,
so I don't think we have to be a fan of all great actor in the world, it's normal imo,

Yes, KHN made me feel a lot more for his character than what's written. Eh...I actually dislike Wook's hair, LOL. He's definitely an actor which I will look out for. Did you see his cameo in Missing Noir M? He was fantastic!

True words about not needing to be a fan of all great actors. There is definitely a common standard of what's good acting and what's bad. But when we go higher, what's great and just good becomes subjective.

well Wook's hair is miles better than Qing Dynasty hairstyle in every way (but I do like the braid and how the 4th pose when he stands and touches the end of the braid with one hand),

I watch it because I stumble upon the BTS scene when they told that he gonna have roles in the 1st episode, and I was like wait for it . . . . *write the shows name right away

0

@Sera, I like both Ji Soo and Lee Won Geun but if it's going to be a detective show or something dark, I will vote for Lee Won Geun. I've only seen him in The Good Wife but I sense that he can do more than just smiley eyes.

I love Ji Soo in Angry Mom, Page Turner and Fantastic but I don't think he can do any more than being a angsty kid or puppy in love. Not yet. It's funny how I enjoy his role in Fantastic and cringe when he comes on in Moon Lovers.

@Sancheezy I do like procedural shows especially if they are on cable. Kang Ha Neul and Park Hae Jin? Now, you've got me excited....can this happen?

I hate all the princes' hair that have bangs except for LJK's.

That's how I feel when I was watching Descendants of the Sun and everyone was raving about Soong Jong-ki, don't get me wrong, I love this guy, but I was like meh, their chemistry wasn't doing anything for me and I was simply uninterested in his character, but second leads caught my interest the most and I ended up watching only for Kim Ji-won and Jin-gu. Lee Jun-ki on ther other hand, I was never interested in him, thought Moon Lovers was going to change it for me, but nope, still no. And I don't think putting more scenes of him or developing his loveline will help, heck even Kang Ha-neul couldn't save this trainwreck for me. MDBC is now at its calm-before-the-storm pace so I am basking in all the swooning moments before things go haywire.

An optimist will continuously believe that a happy ending is possible.
A pessimist already has a tragic ending in mind, a fanfic alternative ending, a tub of ice cream, cans of beers, a box of kleenex, a drafted "OMG ???? noooooo!" Tweet, bars of chocolates and the break-up playlist on hand.
A realist will watch the show, accept the shows fate, read the recap, internalize and binge watch the show again.

I think it varies from person to person. I feel the same way when I'm watching MDBC cause kim yoo jung - bogum don't click for me at all. I feel she's way too young and at times her expressions come off childish, maybe kim ji won should have been casted after all, or someone more mature. Same reason I left mirror of the witch midway. And it's unfortunate since I love PBG as an actor. I did not like DOTS either but more than the actors the story sucked imo.
On the other hand, scarlet heart is the only drama I'm looking forward to each week as the story is something new and unique, and it's different than the conventional sageuks. Also because the relationship of So and Suu is what I've been reading in fictions for ages lol, dark broody hero who only find solace in the meek heroine here[in this case feisty though]...one book even comes to mind which is shivering sands, though very Victorian and cliche may be for most of the people, but end of the day we watch romance dramas for what it is, romance. So not for Jun Ki, rather scarlet is sort of my favorite because it suits my preference. Also IU's so cute as the endearing Su who empathizes with everyone around her, like even her maid.. and who stands up for her own self when she's in desperate situations like for instance, getting married to the king.

I feel you on SHR/ ML.
The problem with me is there must be a very strong reason for me to stick to a show. More often than not it must be the story telling over the acting. As for SHR/ ML I've got the feeling that the writer is making shoes too big for herself to walk around in. The discrepancy between what she wants the show to be and her capability to make her visions materialise starts to show and the effort is sometimes painful to watch (at least to me). I don't want to start on the editing and directing, as it would be beating the same dead horse all over again.

I appreciate her attempt to steer away from the original by choosing to transport HS back to the time when the battle for the throne hasn't even started (apart from some attempt from 3rd), but considering the limited length for the drama (20-21 eps), that is an extremely big risk to take. And now it backfires. It's already ep 7 and most of the princes are still idling around, their affiliation to one another is either rushed or little elaborated, while precious screen time is still being wasted on certain side characters and their antics. I also appreciate her recreation of HS as someone without knowledge about Goryeo's history, but her attempt to make up for this lack of knowledge by having HS have vision and dream of brothers killing one another has felt forced. I'd buy it if HS has had similar visions after every near-death experience, and grown to believe in them, rather than her having such visions only in ep 6 and choosing to believe in them right away.

Another issue I'm having with this show is that the writer still seems to be struggling to find her foothold. She both tries to be different from and similar to the original novel, and I've got this impression that every time things seem rushed it is when the writer suddenly snaps out of her wandering and has to catch up with the original story line. In other words, she doesn't seem to be confident in her ability to tell a completely different epic story based only on the time-travelling concept of BBJX. Up to ep 7, the show tries to be both epic and romantic, but sadly fails at both for me. To give her credit, the relationships between the 3 leads are elaborated, and I really like it. Yet at the same time I can't help thinking that if they were placed in a modern setting minus all the side characters perhaps I'd appreciate the story better. As of now the show is still very confusing identity-wise I'm having a hard time connecting to it as an organic whole.

Hi @Hye Mi :) Yes, story is the most important thing in a drama. I was wondering how did it go so wrong?

Maybe Moon Lovers was never meant to be the show we thought it would be. It's like we were expecting some good theatre play but ended watching a school skit.

From what I read, this writer isn't at all experienced and definitely not in saeguk. Did they think it's not important because this is an adaptation? Or does it mean the production didn't place importance on the story and if any production doesn't prioritize this, what does it say about the project?

Re. the writer: Yes, she seems to take a really long break (6 years if I remember it right? Can't bother to check again rn) and I've checked out one of her previous dramas to have a gist of her writing styles and I did feel the rushed relationship with off-screen development. I thought she would improve that after 6 years but as soon as I saw ep 3-6 I knew she didn't live up to my expectation.

I don't think many people would have much problem with the writing if this was meant to be another C&4K. Disappointed people just whine a little and move on, but since this is an adaptation of a drama that I like (and there are a hundred ways I think this show could have been done better, if not hugely improved from the original) and a multi-billion-won production I think they should have at least picked a better writer if they had decided to cast many young actors either weak at acting or inexperienced in sageuks.

W was a letdown for me. EP 1-6 were tight and mind-blowing. EP 7-11 were still good, but cracks were starting to show not only in the plot but in the characters as well. Like Chocolatte, I was invested solely in knowing what happens next in the story than the characters especially the main couple. Something just did not connect on the emotional level. However, overall W is good. The best was its cinematography and music direction.

I'm not entirely disappointed with W although it did leave a few questions unanswered and somehow reading the comments did give light to some questions. So I leave the Show with no bitter feelings.

Jealousy Incarnate I swore to myself that I will not experience a SLS, but damn, Gong-pyo is just pure charming with his voice, eyes and those winks...oh so pretty.

Moonlight Drawn by Clouds Oh you, I just purely love every second and every minute of this Show. It's a shame I can't miss school this week to watch you but I will find ways. I will.

I've been meaning to go back to the dramas that I suddenly dropped. But I'm still hesitant because I tend to binge watch everything and that's not good for someone who wants to finish university.

Hope Heads had a wonderful birthday!

Well, I'm usually bad at finishing drama and tend to drop them like hot potatoes because I have short attention lifespan, unless I really really love it. Somehow, I managed to almost get through Suki na Hito ga Iru Koto (1 more weel left), must be the power of Mirei and Kento chemistry. Moonlight Drawn by Clouds is what help me get through the week now, actually I wasn't expecting much from this drama, in fact I was super bored by the 1st episode, I think I only watched it for Park Bo-gum, but then BAM! It just hits me like a thousand rocks, and here I am camping on dramabeans all week long just to talk about it. I haven't gotten this excite over a drama in a long long time, so I'm just feeling super hyper right now. I'm considering on dropping Moon Lovers because I was simply too distracted to watch and all the bad editing flow just gets to me.

I actually fell for Moon Lovers even though it has too many freaking close ups and freaking horrible songs for background music, that 'baby boy' song is do horrible it makes me want to vomit.

Other thing that makes me want to vomit is Wang Exo's acting, he is so bad. It's not him acting as childish that's bad, he can't act at all. Even Ji Soo is better than him.

But I stay in it for Lee Jun Ki, he is so good it's crazy. I also like IU for her chemistry with both Wang Wook and Wang So, she has a charm and certain emotion in her eyes that shines during moments with them. I also like how So and Soo are becoming friends, I keep watching to check for their moments.

I also srtrted watching Cinderella and the 4 Knights, and now I wish Ahn Jae Hyun was the true lead. He has such good chemistry with Park So Dam, and the male lead guy is such a usual common kdrama type I find him boring.

I hope Ji Soo gets well :(

I've dropped the cinderella drama. It's like ahn jae hyun's character is the skeleton of what he used to be. They've made him a cardboard character by now.. It sucks cause his and hae won's bickering was one of the reason I got so invested and now that reason is gone. And hye ji, argh where do I begin. She really sucks life out of everyone around her, and honestly the drama has no story going on. I mean they can't even do fillers right. I'd rather go back and watch Beautiful Mind again as park so dam's hae won here is not much impressive.
I feel these days I only start watching a new drama because the old ones keep boring me. So that's may be the reason I've not finished UF,W,MOW, and now maybe Cinderella is going to stay on shelf too.

Ah I knew it would happen that way. The mechanic guy is the lead so naturally they will make the second lead guy less appealing in the story because you can't actually show him being better with the heroine.

It's a stupid drama, so many clichés but I weirdly enjoy this early part and keep wishing it was AJH/PSD otp.

Yes same here. I do like JIW but he was better in that short drama with JSY, he suits roles where he's either total crack or should I say stupid hehe like Flower boy ramyeun shop. But on cinderella it's like his role keeps changing shift from sulky to comic to mysterious to what not. There's no consistency.

Once they went kaput with HM, i dropped the show. HM and HW had some serious chemistry and his was a character with so much potential. What a waste!

I'm wondering if the they would have taken a different track had it been a live shoot given how everyone overwhelming loved HM before

.... I'm curious, was there ever a drama where they changed the lead midway due to audience feedback ? esp when the original lead was the bigger star ?

@bips99 - Dream High.

0

Yes, I missed the old Kang Hyun Min and Eun Ha Won.

I feel bad for AJH, he was a scene stealer at the beginning and had a lot of appreciation for his new-found acting skills... somewhat of a breakout role for him (considering his track record). This is a situation where a CITT-switch would have been appropriate.

Cinderella and the 4 Knights - I wish they would get rid of Hye Ji and her sewing machine. Send her to a sewing factory to work. That girl is draining the life out of this cute drama. The actress is so-so. Too many closeups.
I liked Ahn Jae Hyun in the beginning as a playboy, but now all he does is look goonie eyes at Hye Ji. Jung Il Woo is suppose to be a street smart mechanic, but he's so dumbass that Hye Ji uses him to get Ahn jealous...

@inxomnia yeah I also want PSD-AJH in another drama in future. As someone said above may be if this wasn't a pre produced drama we'd see more scenes focused on them, what's worse is how there are scenes of kang hyun min playing video games, literally 'games' in his room, as if the chaebol eligible bachelor [who's everyone's favorite for their daughters] has nothing else to do except playing video games. That just splashes water over all the hypes about them.

-Second To Last Love- at ep 8 or something (I dont even remember) bcoz too lazy to catch up

Currently watching
-Cinderella and the four knights- light and cute, rooting for Park So Dam, Ahn Jae, Il Woo and the fourth knight!, even though I want to kill Hyeji since the first eps. I guess I should have to do it sooner.

Its strange that not so good actors think that a closed up/ stoic personality is easy to portray bec of lack of expressions. But it is not so. You actually need to be a good actor to pull in the audience when your character has so little to work with.

Yay for the Moonlight love going around. This show really surprised me with the level of emotional investment it managed to get from me. I feel how genuine each character is with their emotions and relationships and in turn, I care. I genuinely care for each and everyone (except for the bad guys of course). They smile, I smile. They cry, I cry with them. Damn Eunuch Ma managed to get me in tears for his tragic love.

This drama is doing everything right. And fingers crossed that it will continue to do so until the end. Congratulations to the drama for having its OST in the top charts. Gummy and Ben's songs give me goosebumps. Sung Si Kyung's song is sad and it tells so much on what is to come. I don't think I'm ready for that just yet. Cannot wait for Monday to come!

I go way back to the King and Clown (2005) with Lee Jun-ki. It is still my favorite Lee Jun-ki project after all these years.
I didn't get to watch King and the Clown till a few years later but I learnt a lot from it and I'm still cheering for those actors and film-makers.

The little clown show that Kim Yoo-jung and her foster father did in Moonlight reminds me of it. The common people didn't have a voice so they'd find ways to express it through songs, dance, puppet shows etc. It's very touching.

And more beautiful than a lot of women! :-D

*Moonlight Drawn by Clouds* : MY drama right! And then I found out the cinematographer of the drama is the same as in Nice Guy. I knew something looked familiar.

It's actually my first Park Bo Gum drama but my I don't know how many-Kim Yoo Jung drama and I love them both.

I feel like Kim Yoo Jung doesn't get enough credit and I get why: because Park Bo Gum is rocking it and pretty and usually the guy always gets more attention. But don't underestimate her! :)

*W - Two Worlds* : Disappointed! I was so happy in the beginning because I thought it was finally a drama where the writer doesn't treat the viewers as dumb people. But I was wrong! Second half of the drama just went down the drain.

*Moon Lovers* : I catched up and I'm just here saying I rather stay with the original drama. The close-up are ridiculous and ineffective. There is literally no flow in the story. I thought some moments were beautiful but most of the time I feel nothing while watching it. There is this one OST/BGM though I really love.

I wonder what would've happen if the role was reversed and the male lead was playing a court-maid lol.

I think we often judge our female actors unfairly and give very little compliment when they accomplished something amazing.

Yoo-jung's generation of female actors are much more talented than the male actors except for the obvious few.

If you haven't seen her in The Dirge Singer then you should check it out. It's only one episode on KBS World YouTube. She is fantastic with older actors especially when it's not about romantic love between the two leads.

I second the rec for The Dirge Singer. A very poignant story about personal growth, and Kim Yoo-jung was excellent in it.

I know The Dirge Singer and thought it was brilliant. :D

It is, I don't care what happened with Han Groo and her alleged family members, I want her back in dramaland. She is talented and she deserves to be back on drama land.

Agreed. She's just so talented. I get so sad whenever I think she may never be able to make a come-back.

I can't wait until Moon Lovers this Monday. For the first time in the whole series, Hae Soo will have to think deeply about Wang So. Every time she noticed something weird about the way people treated Wang So, she dismissed it, but this time she can't ignore it. And once kdrama characters start thinking about each others problems they fall in love. My SoSoo shipping heart is ready.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds - I am anxiously waiting for episode 9. This drama keeps me up every night. I end up rewacthing the episodes before I sleep. I love all the characters, strange as it is, even the second leads yoon sung and ha yeon. The leads chemistry though. Off the charts. I want to see lee yeong's reaction face to face with ra-on in hanbok. I waaaaant.

Scarlet Heart - Still watching this, though this week was specially hard to find subs since I download the raw and the sub separately and watch it away from home (work is a *bleep*, ugh). I really can't get into Wook-Haesoo ship. It was weird for me but Kang Haneul's eyes were mesmerizing I ended up rewatching his parts. Do we get to see more Wang So in the coming episodes? I'm so ready for So-Haesoo ship to sail.

Drinking Solo - Caught up to episode 3 as I type this. I just can't get into Hana's character, maybe the actress' fault. Her lips/mouth keeps moving like it has a life of its on. Like when she was supposed to act with her face, her mouth keeps moving. Idk maybe it's just me.

Jealousy Incarnate - This show will be the death of me. Death by laughing to hard and too much. I can't believe they took 8 episodes for the character/story set up. I can't wait for more.

W - I am satisfied with the ending. That Yeonjoo and Kang Chul have their happy ending. I am a happy W fan.

Cinderella - Caught up to episode 11. Show, what happened? We were promised of candy sweet fluffy story. What happened?

Six Flying Dragons - I rarely watch sageuk but wow. Of all the sagueks I have watched, this take the cake. I am halfway (ep26) , and I am trying to watch as slowly as possible because I don't want to deal with SFD depression if I finish all the episodes. I hope the remaining episodes continue to be awesome. Also, I heart Moohyul so much!!!

Train To Busan - Watched it in our local cinema this week. Great movie overall. Ma Dong Seok is so ideal. Gong Yoo, how have I missed you. See you in Goblin later this year.

I'm also planning to watch Coffe Prince again. I really missed Gong Yoo. Also, going to watch Misaeng again because I miss Byun Yohan's quirky side. Bangji was all emo in SFD.

As a "W" fan and as someone lukewarm-to-neutral towards "Moonlight," I agree with all your points. For all its flaws, "W" will always have a special place in my heart.

"However this remains an imperfect almost-masterpiece for me, and my favorite k-drama so far, because even at its worse it remained better than 90% of other k-dramas I’ve watched."

Totally with you on this one! As much as I hate the reset and the drama going round in circles later, just in different person perspective, it is still the best k-drama after so many years. I am willing to overlook the flaws and just enjoy the bittersweet ending.

LJS and HHJ are such beautiful people that they really up the standard for OTP to the maximum.

Goodbye my wonderful W, hope to see them working together again.

Whew! Sounds like I made the right decision dropping W. Like Chocolatte, I just wasn't invested in the characters at all, and by episode 8...that's a problem. And as much as I tried to be open minded about HHJ's acting and consider her character's unique situation, her acting always fell awry for me.

I think I need to learn to stop over hyping or under hyping upcoming dramas for myself. All the dramas that I was super excited for this year have flopped for me, while the ones that I either had low expectations or no expectations for, have blown me away.

Surprisingly, Moon Lovers has fallen under the second category for me. I'm not a sageuk person so I really wasn't paying that much attention to it even though there was a lot excitement stirring around it. Maybe I've been blinded by the pretty, but I'm totally sold on it. I'm interested in the characters, so even if the story stalls for an episode, I'm still engaged in what's happening. I am ready for the stakes to raised though, which I think this upcoming week will do, so I'm excited :D

It's absolutely fascinating to see how everyone's impressions of W are so similar. It began strong with everyone giving it praise and then, when the show started to disobey the rules of it's own world, everyone seemed to fall out of love with it and watched the second half rather begrudgingly.

I fell out of love with the show earlier than most (around the time they put together that marriage) so it was even more interesting for me as an 'outsider' to watch every one else's trust in the show falter. I got a feeling quite early on that all of these game-changing twists were just twists for the sake of being twists as opposed to being twists that pushed the plot forward (and the reset confirmed that.) So I just stopped liking the show... And it's a shame!! The premise is so unique for dramaland and the flip-flopping dimensions and creator as 'god' dynamics really hooked me but it just goes to show that even a set-up as strong as this can still falter and crumble if the writer's vision doesn't remain consistent.

It's kinda comical though that the writer criticized writers who don't plan and can't follow through on their premises SO HARD through the father character...and then did just exactly that.

Pot...meet kettle.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: I seriously watch this show 4x a week. More likely why I can't finish my other dramas. Beautiful OST. I honestly think KYJ doesn't get enough credit for this show. I understand it's PBG's first main lead and he has been nailing it as Yeong but I think YJ should get a lot of credit too.

Our Gab Soon: hanging in there for Solim but omg their characters need to break up so just the plot can move! Lee Wan's character is so lifeless it makes me sad.

Let's fight Ghost: four more to go! Started fast and slowed down in the middle.

Uncontrollably fond: thank gawd it's over! The last two episode were the best of the series.

dong yi: picked it up because of KYJ. This series is well loved but I'm bothered by HYJ's acting here.

Running Man and 1n2D: both good episodes thi week. RM needs a badly reboot though.

I am so invested in Yeong-On and I wouldn't be if one of the actors is falling behind. I find that both PBG and KYJ are strong and they bring to life the characters and their emotions. KYJ, in my opinion, is doing really well in her role.

I love KYJ! First saw her in TMETS and fell in love with her. She plays her young chars so well and set such a standard of expectations that when the adults came on, I'm always disappointed with the adult chars. Like in TMETS, Golden Rainbow and May Queen. She's doing great in MDBC, as is PBG and the other casts too.

Had a crazy busy week and only had time to watch Moon Lovers SBS version and caught up on Moonlight last night. Still gotta finish W plus catch up on Fantastic and Cinderella. Really sad to hear that Jisoo had to undergo surgery. But if that's what would help him recover, it's all the best. I know it sucks that just when our puppy was gonna have a reciprocal romantic relationship--which I've been looking forward to--he is hit with this. But health always comes first and I know he will have other opportunities down the road. I just hope that whatever the production team decides to do, the plot won't be too strange with Jisoo's character's exit or reduced role. Get well ASAP!!

I totally love this "What We're Watching" segment you guys are doing! It helps me so much in figuring out which k-drama to watch next, because I am such an indecisive person, so this is a huge benefit! I look forward to you guys posting this every week. Fighting, Dramabeans!
