Spill the Beans: Sisterly bonding and bizarre fanfiction

Kdramas know how to bring people together. Buddy shares her story:

I was a kdrama fan ever since I was in high school, and I never thought that kdramas can bring people closer to each other. Sounds cheesy, but kdramas were literally the bridge that got me and my stepsister closer to each other.

Until my senior year in high school, I thought I was an only child. Then, I met my unni from my mother’s previous marriage. From then on, she’ll be staying with our family. However, we are both introverts, which made it harder to keep the awkwardness out of our relationship. We only had veeeery small talk for the first two months. Me: “How’s your day at school?” Her: “It was great :)” Both of us: “….” We couldn’t seem to have a conversation that reached at least five sentences.

Then, one midnight, when I was watching You’re Beautiful, she knocked at my door and asked what’s going on. Apparently, I was so loud. I invited her in, and with some snacks, we laughed and swooned our way through three episodes that night. Thanks to You’re Beautiful, we got more comfortable around each other. Since then, we started to talk more (and some more, mostly on our Oppas) to the point that our parents wondered how we managed to do so. When I entered college, we made a vow to only watch kdramas if we are together. Since then, we laughed/cried/got surprised/felt meh/proclaimed war over male characters in a lot of dramas, including Rooftop Prince, The King 2 Hearts, Who Are You-School 2015, the three Answer Me’s, I Remember You, Healer, etc.

Right now, she’s claiming to be Seo In-gook’s future wife, while I proclaim my undying love for Yoon Shi-yoon Oppa <3 (we used to fight over Lee Seung-gi, with hair snatching and all). But even though I love kdramas and Yoon Shi-yoon to the moon and back, I love my sister more, and I would never want to live my life without her. Thankfully, because of kdramas, I got to see that she's such a caring and an amazing person. Getting closer to my unni is why I never regret pulling all-nighters for kdrama marathons.

Well, this is something I don’t ever want to imagine. Crap, too late. ZurnTheUrn tells a strange and interesting tale:

So I started watching dramas back in 2009, and the way I came to dramaland is kind of embarrassing and a part of my dark past that I look down on now. It all started with Twilight. I know. And I was one of those diehard Edward Cullen fangirls. Before you roll your eyes, let me tell you, I was only thirteen. Still embarrassing, but what did I know.

I thought true love was stalking a girl while she’s shopping or watching her while she sleeps. Anyway, being a diehard fangirl, I was devastated when I no longer had another Twilight book to read, so I did what all good fangirls do… I joined fanfiction.

I found other crazy people like me that helped me feel not so alone in my rather unhealthy obsession. It was stupid. But I was happy.

And then came the fanfic that would change my life: “Boys Over Flowers.” I’m not kidding. That was literally what it was named. It was quite genius, actually—the writer used the Twilight characters and the kdrama plot line and IT WORKED. I still remember it all, Edward was Jun-pyo, Jacob was Ji-hoo and Bella was Jan-di. Of course the writing was also pretty good so I was HOOKED. I finally found another reason for my existence… until the chapters ran out and I found out the writer took at least two to three weeks to update a new chapter.

But she let us know that the plot line came from a kdrama and so, being unable to wait weeks for a new update, I looked up the kdrama—and well, as they say, the rest is history. Despite how much I make fun of Twilight now, I am grateful to it for introducing me to dramaland and its thriving community of some very intelligent people.

And of course, kdramas have had the positive effect that Twilight never could have had—I yearn to be like the strong female lead in kdramas who always manages to find a way through every difficulty… which is quite opposite of what Twilight taught me about independence and girl power (I hate you, Bella).

We all know what it’s like to lose sleep to kdramas (and to sob to them, too.) Jae shares:

Hi Dramabeans!!

I’ve been addicted to kpop since the young age of eight, but I’ve never really gotten into dramas until a year ago—what a shame! But since then, I’ve been on a slow descent into hell… I mean, kdramas.

The very first drama I picked up was The Suspicious Housekeeper. Bam—suddenly sleep was a foreign word to me as I hid underneath my covers with my phone watching as many episodes as I could with low volume in the dead of night. I’m going to take a second here to thank kdramas for building my tolerance to getting less than six hours of sleep.

The thing is, my parents are Asian, and I’m pretty sure all Asian parents have a talent for sneaking up in the middle of the night just to do a random check. One time, I was caught (and worst of all, I was sobbing because it was the part in Doctor Stranger where [SPOILER ALERT] his dad dies, and my mom as just there asking what I was doing at midnight, and why I was sobbing. At least since then, I’ve been able to hear even the quietest of squeaks or the turning of a doorknob, so thanks again, kdramas.

2015, well, that was when I discovered Running Man. If I thought trying to mask my angry sobs over Doctor Stranger was hard, trying to not laugh out loud in the middle of the night was worse. Seriously, I may have hyperventilated for a good part of 2015 from all the Running Man episodes. I’ve pulled several all nighters just to finish dramas in time for another one to wreck me, and I’ve nearly gotten viruses just trying to download them for offline viewing.

Thankfully now, I’m not the only one obsessed with dramas, and I’ve dragged my sister down along with me!! Also, thank God for this site when I had school and could not watch the latest episode of School 2015. You guys are great, honestly!

Thank you, jellybine! We wouldn’t be here without fans like you.

Hi Dramabeans,

I was in high school when I first started to love watching Korean dramas. I watched and loved Goong, Full House, and Coffee Prince, but I was still watching dramas occasionally. Until.. I watched Boys Over Flowers, then I started searching every drama for Lee Min-ho, then every good drama of other actors or certain writers.

I kept on watching completed Korean dramas marathon style which kept me sleepless for most of the weekends. The craziest marathon I had was watching Dong Yi on weeknights when I had classes and exams on weekday mornings. I think I only got to sleep around two to three hours during that time. I also ignored my boyfriend’s text messages because I was soooo busy.

I discovered Dramabeans during this time, and read recaps on my super fave dramas. I also watched almost all of the dramas in your Drama Rating section with a 7 or higher rating. Now, I am watching four to seven ongoing dramas and I’m constantly updated on which drama to expect next.

Thank you, Dramabeans, for opening up a whole new amazing platform for us drama lovers. From an occasional watcher, I am definitely now an addict who is gripped heart, body, and soul by dramas.

True to bonding by kdramas!

As for myself, the only time that my elder brother in law ever speaks to me is when he wanted to copy some korean drama; back then it was quite difficult to stream.

Since then, things has gotten a lot better, we talked more, and sometimes watch together, with my sister too.

He would laugh at the dramas joke first; and then laughs at our antics watching the drama. He wouldn't squee or aww or giggle like we do, but he would go "yes" when shows go the way he wants it to be. lulz

I suddenly had an influx of my first kdrama fanfic (I mostly read kpop ones. hurrr). It's JaeshinXYonghwa fic from Sungkyukwan Scandal. Yes, a BL 'cause for me, it ain't a fanfic if it's not a BL. At first it was, 'what's this?'. 'Someone actually writes this?' and I ended up thanking that writer for opening a world I never thought I'll infiltrate. If you know what I mean. *wiggles eyebrows*

Fanfics are great when you're on drama drought or waiting for new episodes. I mean there's only 8 episodes of Moonlight you can rewind until Monday.

I would try to read your FF rec tonight!

Anyone else hace recommendation for good FF?

Why must real life get in the way so much? Lol

Aaaw, I love fanfic. I have a ton of recs!

My all-time favorite kdrama fanfic, for all of us disappointed by the ending of School 2015:

- "try not to look so young and miserable", Who are You - School 2015, Go Eun Byul/Han Yi An and Lee Eun Bi/Gong Tae Kwang by youcallitwinter
(He hates this about her, he wants to tell her, the pretence, the bravado. That she's acting like he's stupid, like it's all in his head, as if he hasn't memorized every turn of her body, can't measure the exact distance between them, doesn't know her avoidance intimately. Like he hasn't spend years doing just that.
(or; Han Yi An forgets to fall out of love.))

Ooooh, and I also love "an honest living", Angry Mom, by the same author. It´s sort of
Jo Bang Wool/Go Bok Dong but basically no more than the drama.
(He actually meant to tell her that school’s so much better now that this crazy ahjumma is not wearing a schoolgirl’s uniform and encroaching on his territory and beating people up and following him into the men’s room and generally ruining his days fourteen ways from Monday.
And he doesn't miss her at all.)

My favorites of the dudes loving dudes variety:

- "78 Card Pick-Up", Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Gu Yong Ha/Moon Jae Shin by bazooka
(A series of situations (some more humorous than others) spanning a four month period, illustrating the gradual, inexorable degradation of Moon Jae Shin's heterosexuality.
These include: Moon Jae Shin's very first visit to Moran-gak; Gu Yong Ha's very first camping experience; an escapade in which Gu Yong Ha very nearly falls off of a roof; a trip to the beach wherein Moon Jae Shin has to hang off the side of a building in the rain.)

- "Vintage Bakery series", Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Gu Yong Ha/Moon Jae Shin by bazooka
(Part One, in which: Moon Jae Shin is drafted into the South Korean military and is posted in a small town to shuffle paperwork; Gu Yong Ha graduates university at the top of his class and takes time off to travel; a high risk situation results in miscommunication; contact is unexpectedly cut off; Moon Jae Shin buys a cup of coffee which he does not intend to drink. Told almost exclusively in epistolary fashion.
A modern-day AU in three parts.)

Some assorted fics that I really really like:

- "growing pains", Sassy Go Go, Kang Yeondoo/Seo Hajoon/Kim Yeol by takakoyaki
(In which Hajoon learns how to let himself be happy, one step at a time.)

- "jealous is a four letter word", Reply 1997, Sung Shi Won/Yoon Yoon Jae/Kang Joon Hee by Lirazel
("You can’t just decide to share a person, Shi Won. He’s not a pot of ramyun.” Shi Won has the greatest idea ever.)

- "we have not touched the stars", Reply 1997/Shut Up Flower Boy Band, Kang Joonhee/Lee Hyunsoo by Lirazel
(There's a new boy in Joonhee's class, a boy like a live wire.)

Oooooooooooh, and "Secreted" by rageprufrock. Secret Garden and no pairings
(It's on the fourth day, when Oska has already written five songs and the lyrics for maybe like two (other) songs when his manager and the label guy pass out together on the couch, that Oska sneaks toward the kitchen for escape that he runs right into Tae Ssun — wearing an apron clearly stolen from Ra Im and making kimbap.)

All these can be found on archiveofourown [dot] org :) Happy reading! ;)

I can relate very much to the first story. My cousin and I were good friends but we never really went beyond a surface relationship. But once I showed her dramas and Kpop we suddenly had so much more to talk about. It became a door to new conversations and midnight confessions, as we became more comfortable with each other through our shared interests. These things really can bring people together if we're brave enough to share.

(Now if they don't like it is another story. Maybe one involving a chair, some rope, and a twenty story building)

@ZurnTheUrn

Lemme tell you girl, you’re not the only past diehard Edward Cullen fan! I think I was a similar age when the books first came out, about 13-15 years old.. I still remember trying to spread the Twilight love, even telling my teachers to read the books.

Thinking back now my teachers especially my English teacher must've thought, so this is what teenagers these days read huh? All those tween moments, I can’t believe I cried in the second book when Edward leaves Bella, and she just sits in her old chair watching the seasons changing.

I am so thankful Robert Pattinson ended up playing as Edward, because it was his role as Edward which snapped me out of my tween love.

I think we all didn't realize how bad the story was, until it was made into a film and everyone just started ripping it apart once it got super popular. Like there was suddenly all these reviews and morale discussions on a book about tween love. Plus I think not many people were happy with Kristen Stewart playing as Bella either.

I still remember that this one lady crying and going crazy after watching the Twilight films. So many crazy moments there were lol, ah good memories.

I'm with you on that. LOL I was still young when I got into the first three books of Twilight and I liked them. /shudders
By the time the last book arrived as well as the movies, I ran the opposite direction. The actors who played the leads helped me see the light and that's about the only good thing I got from the films. Those were the days.

If it helps, I was a Twilight fan too. But I loved Jacob ;). I cringe at how much I liked the books then! Thanks God the movies were so bad that it woke me up from the Twilight craze. But I am proud to proclaim that I am, and will forever remain, a Harry Potter fan! :D

@Nessie I cried in that scene too. And I think I will cry if I even read it now because it was written very well. I loved the blank pages with just the month's name to show how months are passing and she is in the same state. It was sad for sure!

Yes those blank pages! I vividly remember the style was so effective at conveying the pain Bella felt.

One of my friends told me she still cringes every time she looks at her bookshelf and Twilight is there haha. But they do represent a phase in our life I guess.

Jacob was like second lead I could never get into, I'm now starting to think in kdrama trops omg.

Harry Potter is just a literary wall that Twilight can never scale. I do regret not joining in on the fandom when there was the hype. Hopefully it's not too late to board it for the new film "Fantastic beasts and where to find them".

I have suffered from Second Lead Syndrome many a times. I have literally loved every 2nd lead in books. But in kdramas I usually love the lead, barring a few rare cases.

And it's never too late to join the HP fandom. I haven't read Fantastic Beasts but I am really looking forward to the movie :)

I started reading Twilight in 5th grade (2007) thanks to a friend on MapleStory (did anyone else play that game?! Lol). I was obsessed with it for about a year until I read a LiveJournal post ripping it to shreds. That post forever changed the way I consume my entertainment lol. Starting at 12 years old I suddenly became much more critical of what I was reading and watching. In a good way, though! And I've learned now how to be critical of something I like without feeling guilty about liking it. Nothing is perfect and guilty pleasures are okay!

So thank you, Twilight, for deepening my critical thinking process, even though that process made me hate you.

This was right before the first movie came out so I can proudly say I have never watched and refuse to ever watch any of the Twilight films LOL.

I know what dramas are to sisters. I remember just before my sister went off to college, we were at a very awkward stage we had a whole cold war going on. The reason was because I was going through puberty and the biggest snarkiest monster alive and my sister was dating a hoodlum and not kdrama mush inside ones, he was just trash(she also accepts that he was trash now) and we had big fights about it and I told my mom about him. Obviously my parents did a good job of grounding her and then started our era of cold war. She went off to college and we never talked for 6 months. Then she came home for holidays and she brought 2 movies that was the start of our slow friendship one was A walk to remember standard teen melodrama but we bawled together to it. And then came My little Bride, we laughed like crazy to it.
But it wasn't until next year that we actually got close enough to talk hours after midnight, I used to live in a very remote area(read slow internet connection) so she used to download a drama I wanted to watch born it in dvds and ship them to me. And then we would talk about it all the time and then slowly it became less about the dramas and more about ourselves. And here we are now when my sister has got married yet still likes to call me her soulmate. The drama which we bonded over was not korean so I never submitted my story happy to see that Kdramas has brought sisters close too.

My mom had surgery recently to remove some possibly cancerous cells so I drove down to her house (8 hours) and spent ~2 weeks with her helping to care for her farm.
In order to keep my mom SITTING ON THE COUCH LIKE A GOOD SURGERY PATIENT and not trying to flounder around the kitchen and dogs and chickens etc, I introduced her to kdramas for the first time.
One of my besties growing up was half korean and I have fond memories of her oma making kimchi and all kinds of things for us while we watched whatever korean drama was on together.
I had only recently started really obsessing with kdramas again (I HAD MISSED OUT ON OVER 10 YEARS WORTH OF GREAT TV) and I was excited to share some of these new great finds with my mom (especially because she was now a literally captive audience). I watched Secret Garden and You From Another Star with her. My mom was hooked.
It gave my mom and I something extra to bond with whilst also keeping her safe on the couch to recover. Thanks, kdramas.

Added bonus:

I get fun, context free, texts from mom now occasionally wherein she yells at the characters or plot lines. I love it <3.

A recent example where I think she was watching Dream Knight (whatever that one with GOT7 being dolls or something is?) is she texted [Spoiler Alert] "so this girl basically wished herself a boyfriend into existence and also her disease away maybe???? She should've turned into a doll too because that would've made more sense"

It took me a few mins to figure out which show she was watching lol

Awww, Buddy's story is lovely. So nice to hear about the uniting power of dramas.

And ZurnTheUrn, it's okay. I used to be a big Twilight fangirl too. But I don't think it's something to be embarrassed about. Yeah, Twilight was somewhat problematic, but most of us have realised that now. We like what we like, and as long as we're not blind to it's faults and are willing to engage with the problematic aspects, then just enjoy your entertainment for what it is.

I went down the fanfiction road back in the day, too (although I now have a self-imposed lifelong ban from fanfiction haha), and I once read a really good Harry Potter fic based on Hana Yori Dango. Well, I thought it was good at the time, anyway. But it was one of those abandoned fics that never got finished. Alas.

I was more of fan of Japanese dramas when i first started watching any kind of non-english shows. Since i used to watch a lot of Japanese anime, i always would watch Japanese stuff. But then from the site i watched, people were watching lot of korean dramas, and i did not know what the hype was about for k-dramas. Without watching any of k-dramas, i absolutely HATED Korean dramas, because it was so damn popular than Japanese ones. Blame my brain for thinking like that.

One day, my favourite Japanese drama ended, i did not know what to watch. That time, in 2009, most famous and top of the month would always be BOF which that time was airing , but had aired around 22 ep.
Then out of just curiosity, i just clicked on ep 1 and started watching. I had to admit, it was so good. The beginning was so good, i got so hooked that i finished watching 5 ep in just one night. But then in the 2nd half of the drama, it became draggy, and i could not watch it at all, so i stopped watching it.

But somehow i liked the language, and decided to watch another drama. My girl was the 2nd drama i watched which was from 2005. That show just made me love Korean dramas.i had a huge crush on Lee junki. OST of that drama was so damn good, i would listen to it everyday. And the rest is history.

Then one day, after watching lot of K-dramas, i decided to watch a Japanese drama, which i forgotten after knowing the awesome-ness of K-dramas. To be honest, i found J-dramas a bit bland compared to K-dramas. And then i realized that, i have been missing a lot of good stuff and i realized why people love K-drama more than any another asian dramas.

KDramas really do bring people together! Growing up, my sister and I shared similar tastes in books, movies, tv shows etc. We went to the same concerts and same events. As we got older tastes changed. Four years ago she started watching KDramas and listening to KPOP. An introvert at heart, she was reticent to share her new found hobby. When she would say something we (family and friends would look at her weirdly.) We were not accepting at all.

Fast forward to May 2015 Memorial weekend. Time on my hands with nothing to do I turned on Netflix. International recommendations (We're Indian and used to watching international movies) pulled up multiple Kdramas. I thought why not, let's see what Big Sis loves so much about these. Goddess of Marriage was my first KDrama. Before the weekend was over, I sent Big Sis a message saying now I get it. Hooked for life!

May 2015-May 2016 was my year of Korean culture immersion. It continues... I don't see myself getting bored anytime soon. The stories are great! The eye candy to die for!! And though we have different tastes in KPOP we support each other's interests. Taking various sister's weekends to attend Big Bang and EXO concerts. Great bonding time!

We've become closer sharing our love of KDramas and their leads. Recommending music to each other and talking about the latest IC or Running Man episode is the best.

We even attended KCON 2015 and 2016. Meeting the ladies of Dramabeans was an awesome experience this year!! HeadsNo2, if you remember the two sisters you met ( one wearing an Oppa shirt and the other a Big Bang shirt) that's us :). Dramabeans, thank you for providing a forum for us to share our love of K Entertainment!

I am the opposite of my older sister. I like sharing my interests with everyone. Spreading the love of K Entertainment to one and all! Big Sis is more comfortable sharing now too. :)

Evventhough, I got into kdramas around 2012, (I know really late compared to most), I was really a closet fan till summer 2013. I thought at first my parents would be really against me watching these shows. But, after I realized I did not wish to live as a closet fan anymore, it was no fun to secretly love something and not be able to share it with others.

Thankfully, my parents actually did not mind and I even forced(they all enjoyed it) all of my family to watch My love from the Stars as a family. Now, my older sister who is married enjoys talking to me about them, infact, that is all we really talk about and I occassionally bring good dramas up with my family members and suggest they watch them.
