Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 8

Now it feels like we’ve finally dispensed with the setup to get to the actual meat of the character interactions, which is a definite plus in my book. Even if everything in this hour revolves around a newly introduced (and swiftly resolved) problem, it at least gives our heroine more opportunities to form new alliances, or to strengthen the ones she already has. One thing’s for sure—her makeup brings all the boys to the yard.

EPISODE 8 RECAP

Continuing straight from where we left off last week, So demands that Su look at his scarred face properly. He tells her how he hates that look she gave him, and adds that he doesn’t ever want to see it from her again.

Confused, Su asks him what look he’s talking about. Growing angrier, So claims that it’s a look of pity, and he doesn’t need her, of all people, to feel sorry for him. As he slowly loosens his grip on her wrist, he leaves her with a warning: “Stay out of my sight. Next time… I don’t know what I’ll do to you.”

Su is left to lean against the same column for support after he leaves, looking more than a little dazed and concerned by their encounter.

That night, So is back to wearing his mask as he lies under the stars in Astronomer Choi’s tower. Thirteenth prince Baek-ah finds his older brother in much more agreeable spirits as he apologizes for not putting a stop to the unmasking earlier. For the record, he also adds that errant tenth prince Eun regrets what he did.

So mentions that Baek-ah didn’t look at him when he unmasked himself, and Baek-ah replies that he was worried it would upset So if he did. So sighs that feelings are so fickle—he can be mad at one person for looking, and one person for not looking. Yeah, tell us about it.

At least Baek-ah stands up for Su, who he says was just manipulated by the much-eyeliner’d third prince Yo. So cuts him off, not wanting to hear any more about Su.

Along with Court Lady Oh, Su attends to the king’s morning routine, which includes a light smattering of cosmetics. He backhandedly reminds Su of her place when it comes to the princes, who she admits she hasn’t seen much of lately, before Court Lady Oh coifs the king’s hair into a topknot.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong intervenes in this process, demanding that the court lady allow her to do the tending. She’s offended by the simple wooden pin Court Lady Oh was to use to secure the topknot, until King Taejo informs the queen that he’s dressing simply to reflect the drought their nation is suffering.

In keeping with that theme, all the princes enjoy the personalized tea Su serves them—well, all except for So, who admonishes her for serving tea when there’s such a drought going on.

Su takes Baek-ah aside afterward to make sure he didn’t make a mistake in telling her all of So’s favorite things to eat and drink. It’s funny when Baek-ah comments that he had to give her everyone’s favorites so it would be less obvious that she was catering specifically to So, which is why it upsets her that So rejected her offer.

She’s frustrated that So seems to only be angry with her, which even Baek-ah confirms—he forgave Eun right away, so why is he still so sore at Su? Baek-ah has a suspicion, but Su tries to bow out before the other court ladies see them.

Unfortunately, Baek-ah intentionally doesn’t let her go, which only makes things look worse. Su is punished by the other girls and by Court Lady Oh, who warns her to stay away from the princes and out of trouble.

Soon-deok, Grand General park’s daughter, finally works up the courage to face tenth prince Eun directly. Her stuttering problem prevents her from getting her thoughts out properly, and Eun is doubly unhelpful, his only concern being that the drought has left him with nothing to do.

But she has a solution to his boredom, and takes him to a spot where she’s set a trap. Eun is too impatient to wait, but Soon-deok pulls him down when she sees a bird approach the trap. The fact that she gets to hold Eun’s hand, however inadvertently, makes her break out into a wide grin.

They wait for the right opportunity to spring the trap, and Eun couldn’t be more excited that they’ll get to eat it… at least until Soon-deok breaks the bird’s neck. Disgusted, he calls her a murderer and leaves, and poor, clueless Soon-deok is left to wonder if he was upset because he wanted to eat the bird alive. Hah.

Her father watches the display and tsks from a distance, eventually sitting down with his daughter to cook the bite-sized bird. It’s adorable how he tries to attack Eun’s lack of manliness to make his daughter feel better: “What kind of man can’t even catch a bird?” Soon-deok: “I can catch them.” Grand General Park: “Then… how can he protect his wife and children!” Soon-deok: “I can protect us.”

It’s both funny and sad that Soon-deok has accounted for all these possibilities in her mind, though we’re not let in on the whole story between her and Eun. It seems like her father knows that she’s leaning toward Eun, and has given up on dissuading her.

Eighth prince Wook heads over to Damiwon, presumably to see Su, but he finds the doors barred with a note that since the palace will be holding a ritual to bring rain, all outside access will be blocked. Later that night, Su finds a note near her bedside, and is just barely able to make out the Hanja characters to realize that Wook wants to meet her in the secret entrance to the baths.

She grins from ear to ear when she finds him there, and he admits that Chae-ryung told him of the location when he expressed his frustration at being unable to see Su. Aw.

Sitting in the dark cave, Wook remarks on how easy it would be for her to use the tunnel to escape the palace. Su knows this well, but tells him how So told her that there would be no way for her to truly escape the king. Since Damiwon suits her well, she says she’d rather wait until she can leave the palace with the king’s blessing.

“Until then… could you… not forget me?” she asks hesitantly. By way of reply, Wook tells her that if the upcoming rain ritual produces rain, the king will be apt to grant favors accordingly. He’ll request that the king free her from her service, which causes Su’s face to light up from within at the thought of being able to return to his house.

Wook smiles broadly as he says that when she does return, he’ll buy everything she’ll need to make soap, and fill the house with all her favorite supplies. Su jokes that Princess Yeonhwa would hate that, but adds quietly, “I desperately hope it will rain. It has to.” Wook agrees.

She closes her eyes as she rests her head on his shoulder, and Wook can only smile as he holds her hand and leans in closer.

Su helps treat Crown Prince Mu’s condition before he heads off to quell a rebellion caused by the ongoing drought. The crown prince, appreciative of her help and discretion, says that he’s left her a necklace back at Damiwon.

So pops in to tell the crown prince that everything’s ready, looking visibly unhappy to find Su there as well. Once the two are left alone, So seems suspicious of the basket of supplies she’s carrying out of the tent, and sees her being apprehended by Queen Sinmyeongsunseong’s court ladies outside.

Su is brought before the queen and third prince Yo, and is asked to account for her absence. Yo calls her out for being with the crown prince and demands to know what she was up to. The basket she carried is used as evidence against her, and the herbs inside cause the queen to ask Su if the crown prince is ill.

When Su claims to know nothing, the queen grabs her by the hair. So sees this but doesn’t interfere—thankfully, Court Lady Oh does, with a working alibi for Su’s whereabouts.

Though Queen Sinmyeongsunseong questions Court Lady Oh’s claim that she sent Su to tend to the king, the court lady is sharp, and asks if the queen would have preferred that she tend to him herself. After a stare-down, the queen leaves.

So approaches his mother afterward, though as usual, she’s less than thrilled to see him. He’s not as concerned about her demeanor toward him as he is about the way she treats others—most notably Court Lady Oh and Su. No matter how much contempt she has, he cautions her, she should also maintain her dignity. Now the queen can’t help but wonder if this is all because of Su.

Court Lady Oh looks to be having some stomach trouble again, and is in no mood for Su’s gratitude. She turns around and slaps the girl across the face for going against her orders to stay away from the crown prince. Court Lady Oh says she regrets ever taking her in.

This finally seems to break Su, who asks what she’s done so wrong in treating the crown prince. Why shouldn’t she, if she knows how? When Court Lady Oh says she knows nothing of the palace, Su agrees, but then asks why Oh hasn’t bothered to teach her. Why, out of all the other court ladies, does Oh treat her so hatefully?

With a hand over her stomach and sweat on her brow, Court Lady Oh finally says that she gets so upset with Su because she reminds her of herself when she was younger—she’s too trustful and too good. “A girl like you could easily die here,” she says. She adds that she’s worried… but before she can say more, she doubles over in pain.

She wakes in her bed with Su tending to her, though her attempts to be gruff enough to make the girl leave don’t work—now that Su knows she was just being hard on her because she cared about her, she’s not scared of her anymore. Court Lady Oh’s demeanor changes, and soon both she and Su are smiling at each other over the terrible porridge Su made.

King Taejo performs the rain ritual to plead for the heavens to end the drought by kneeling repeatedly in supplication. It’s a strain on his knees and his stamina, so Astronomer Choi suggests that one of the princes take over for him.

In order to make the selection fair, all the princes put their names in a pot to be drawn at random. Yo scares the rest of his brothers by claiming that the people will call for their blood should the ritual fail to bring rain, at least until So aptly points out that the ritual isn’t held to make it rain, it’s held until there’s rain.

“A person cannot move the heavens. We just have to make it look as though they can,” So adds. Lo and behold, his name is chosen by the king to take over the ritual, and So has no choice but to accept.

He doesn’t get to just bow at the temple like his father did—he has to first walk through the capital as part of the ceremony, which subjects him to the ridicule of the people for being more monster than man. Believing that a masked prince won’t help their cause any, they throw stones at him, and sling what might very well be feces on him. (It also looks like mud, but they’re in a drought, so.)

So still does his best to go through with the ritual, offering no verbal complaint. By the time he actually makes it to the palace covered in muck, Queen Sinmyeongsunseong actually smiles to see him so, as does Yo.

Poor So looks frightened from the ordeal, only to shake with anger when he sees even Su looking at first away from him, then right at him. Defeated, he drops the ceremonial jug and runs away.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong, pleased with this recent turn of events, has something even worse up her sleeve—she and Yo have conspired to have the crown prince attacked by thieves on his way back to the palace. Yo comments on how he had been the one who hoped to be in charge of the rain ritual, yet So was chosen instead.

The queen believes that it was King Taejo and Astronomer Choi who conspired to make sure So was chosen, having no belief that it was by some divine chance. Even so, she still sees this as an opportunity for Yo to gain more of a foothold to the throne, though we’re not told exactly how.

Su goes looking for So, who she finds napping in a boat (the boat’s stuck in mud due to the drought). She almost falls over, but either Su was faking sleep or his reflexes are so quick that he’s able to pull her to safety.

Of course, that means pulling her down with him, and the two share a moment as they find themselves in such close proximity. Su finally scrambles up to tell him that it’s time for him to come out of hiding now. He shouldn’t take what happened too hard, she adds—the people are just desperate and angry.

So snaps that he doesn’t want her pity, then asks if she knows why she was born. She admits that she’s thought about it, but there’s no answer. She can only determine how she’ll live, and she doesn’t want to live a life controlled by others. “No one in this world has an easy life,” she adds sagely.

He at least pays attention while she talks, but pretends as though he’s above it as he resumes fake-napping. At her advice that he return to the rain ritual and forget what happened, he calls her out for pretending to know everything about the world when she’s still so young.

That night, Su thinks over So’s question about why she thinks she was born and, unable to sleep, she attempts to concoct her own BB cream and succeeds.

It’s the day of the rain ritual, and Crown Prince Mu has yet to show up. Worried that something must have happened to him, Astronomer Choi volunteers to go find the crown prince himself. But since that would mean leaving So to appease the people on his own, So declines.

Astronomer Choi gets on his case about being too obsessed with the scar on his face, and advises him to get over it if he hopes to be able to help the crown prince and resolve his mommy issues. That’s when So realizes that Choi made it so that his name was picked.

The astronomer doesn’t deny it, but adds that he just wanted to help him build his confidence. So sees it as a lowly appointment in and of itself, thinking that Astronomer Choi just needed a slave to perform the ritual until it rained.

“If it rains because of that slave,” the astronomer says, throwing So’s words back at him, “then that slave will become a king!” Ah, so now the plan comes out—he’d only wanted to help So’s standing with his own family and the people, in order to make sure So stood in solidarity with the crown prince. But, he adds, he can only set the table. It’s up to So to take charge of his own destiny.

Resolved, So grabs a new set of ceremonial robes to perform the ritual, only to be stopped by Su, who claims to have found a way to rid him of his mask. Sitting him down before her table of makeup, she takes off his mask. They both look into each other’s eyes for a long, charged moment, until Su brushes his bangs aside to reveal the full extent of the scar.

He grows nervous when she reaches up to touch it, tracing her finger down the long, crooked line. Suddenly, he grabs her by the wrist and asks if she’s not afraid of his face. “Do you feel sorry for me?” She answers back that she can’t feel sorry for someone who’s always threatening her—and besides, the man behind the scar matters more.

She only finds it unfair that he’s had to suffer all his life because of a scar no bigger than the palm of her hand, causing him to search her face as he asks if he can really trust her. Su says that because she’s been betrayed so much in her own life, she will make it so that he can trust her by not changing who she is. If he trusts her, she adds, she won’t betray that trust.

“As long as it’s you… I can put myself in your hands,” So says quietly. “Do as you wish. I am now yours.” (He uses the same language as he did when he said she was “his” earlier on, only now, it’s reversed.)

Su sets to her work in covering his scar as we cut to the king and family waiting for the ritual to resume. The ministers suggest that the king appoint Yo to head the ritual since the crown prince has yet to show.

Feeling sure of himself, Yo tells Astonomer Choi that he should stop expecting the crown prince—he won’t be showing up anytime soon. Subtlety, Yo. Heard of it?

We find Su applying makeup to So’s scar, and once it’s done, she holds up a reflective surface for him to see for himself. He then grabs her by the shoulders when she rises and turns her to face him in all his unscarred beauty.

“Do you remember? I told you that you were mine,” So says. “Then and now, and the moment you touched my face… I decided that you would be mine. So prepare your heart from this point forward. I… will never let you go.”

He leans in as if to kiss her, causing Su to go still with shock. Seeming to sense her reluctance, So doesn’t push things further, and gently loosens his grasp on her shoulders. He leaves, and Su’s hand goes to her wrist, where Wook’s bracelet still rests.

Before Yo can make it to the ceremonial palanquin, So stops him, though he’s back to wearing his mask. He claims that only he and the crown prince have the right to be in the palanquin, and in his anger, Yo punches the mask off his face.

But when So rises from picking it up, Yo can’t believe his eyes. So takes his place in the palanquin and departs, ending up in the same place as before on his march to the palace. The people are ready to start throwing stones again, until they notice that his scar is gone.

Thinking it some sort of divine sign, the people all begin to bow to So as he walks among them, all of them praying for rain. Astronomer Choi looks pleased as he walks behind the prince, but Yo, looking from afar, looks positively murderous.

The royal family is surprised to see So walk back into the palace with the people supporting him rather than throwing stones, which makes the evil queen very, very angry. That, and she expected the son she actually loves to head the ritual.

All the princes react with restrained surprise to see So’s unblemished face, but it’s Wook who seems to figure out how such a thing could’ve happened. He looks over to Su, who’s only got eyes for So. Is that… is that jealousy? Please say yes.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong is at a loss when she sees So’s face, but is unable to say anything as So heads up the steps toward the ceremonial altar. He turns to look at all gathered, his eyes resting specifically on Su. He smiles, she smiles back…

But suddenly the scene in front of her changes. She sees the unmarred So in a king’s garb atop the steps, his smile gone. Just as quickly, the scene returns to normal, but Su is still shaken.

Then, what starts as a few droplets turns into a torrential downpour. There’s surprise and jubilation among the royal family, though Queen Sinmyeongsunseong couldn’t look any more unhappy with all these developments if she tried.

Astronomer Choi just smiles, his plan having worked. Su, however, looks more frightened now than ever as So turns back to look at her. She can’t help from wondering if So will become King Gwangjong, the fourth king of Goryeo.

So turns back toward the altar and smiles a dangerous smile, as the rain washes the makeup away to reveal his scar once more.

COMMENTS

That last shot was great, not just because it gave us a frightening glimpse into that side of So we know to be lurking there, but because it’s an actual appropriate use of the close-up. I’ve been deliberately not commenting on PD Kim Kyu-tae’s work in this drama, preferring to wait to see the whole of it before weighing in, though it’s no secret that I’ve found his style and approach problematic over the years. And while he chronically overuses close-ups to the point where they lose their meaning, sometimes, the style yields positive results. In this case, getting close-ups of So’s face sans scar worked very well—getting endless close-ups of Su staring, not so much. But I’ll take what I can get, even if it means relying on luck and an actor’s ability to make some of the more questionable shot choices mean something.

Seeing So look so calculated near the end raises some concerns, the least of which being: How well do we actually know him? Like Astronomer Choi noted, he’s completely capable of killing people, yet completely powerless when it comes to his scar and his own insecurity. I wonder if, by helping to disguise the deformity that’s held So back all this time, Su’s actually created the monster she seems to think King Gwangjong is. That seems to be the reason she suddenly saw a flash of the future (or imagined it), of So as king with a scarless face. Which also brings up a whole host of questions about how Su is or isn’t impacting history with her presence in the past. It’s not an issue the show seemed to want to touch with a ten foot pole until now, and even then, I don’t know if they were making the direct correlation that Su just opened the door for So to become King Gwangjong. Or maybe they were, who knows.

I wish So had gotten more of a moment with the mirror before he turned all his attention to Su, if only because it would’ve been nice to see more of a meaningful reaction from him after he saw the one thing that’s held him back his entire life just disappear before his eyes. It seems like such a missed opportunity to not showcase the range of emotions we can only imagine he had at seeing himself as normal. But at least we got a glimpse of it in his thankfulness toward Su, despite there being more to their moment than just gratitude.

But one did get the feeling that all So’s ever wanted is someone he could trust and depend on, and maybe even love—it’s difficult to separate his need to be accepted and wanted by his mother with the solace he’s now found in Su. All that acceptance he could never get from Mommy Dearest, he suddenly has from Su. All that compassion he wanted, he now has. So it’s not so out of line to believe that all he needed from Su was her permission to trust her in order to fall for her completely, enough to where he’d declare himself to be hers. Granted, he also declared her to be his, but at least this time was an even trade, an “I am yours, and you are mine,” sort of scenario. It would’ve been nice to get Su’s input on this, but there’s plenty of time.

At least she grasped enough of the situation with So to think of Wook’s bracelet, which symbolizes the promise she made with him. What’s extra interesting about them is how the show even reinforced their relationship this episode—while it was left to Wook to tell her to wait for him last episode, it was Su who more or less asked the same of him this round. I’ve come to love those two together so much that I’m worried about all the conflict that last sequence of scenes promised (in the best way possible), with Wook looking at Su, and Su looking at So. Don’t break his smolder, Moon Lovers. Pretty please?

How is it that the two scarred people are still the most beautiful in all of Goryeo? Still, when in Goryeo, do what the Goryeo citizens do. If covering the scar plays the game enough to make So king, well then, by all means! (Except, not - I don't want him killing all of his brothers and sister.)

I loved this episode, the close-ups, the predictable rocky- boat-fall-into-his-arms-scene and the dreamy, intimate scene where Hae Soo traced So's scar and he says, "I'm yours." OMGwangjong!

Goryeo was a dusty, dirty, unforgiving era - a little pretty goes a long way and a lot of pretty goes to the Moon Lovers and back!

no offence but I just realize I enjoyed the drama with (a lot) less of Wook.
I know Wook/Su lovestory is a part of the plot but hell they didn't need to drag it for 8 episode (and maybe a little bit more) and why they cut all the important scenes that explains SoSu relationship. I'm so mad.

I don't think you're alone there. For me, it's not because I don't like Kang Ha Neul it's because I've been influenced by too many kdramas to get on the second lead ship. It's harder too because their love story is intermixed with some very sweet and tender and deep moments between So/Soo. Because I already know that she's going to fall in love with him, I can't maintain my interest in the doomed Wook/Soo love story. It's not even tragic to me because the So/Soo loveline has already been well developed (on So's side in particular).

Soo and So already have a really lovely relationship, both are open with each other, now Soo is aware of So and is psychically attracted. So is really making his move and his interest clear. I just want more.

I am with you on this. It's never the problem with KHN because he is extremely good as 8th, even better than the C-version and ones can totally bought why Su falls for him in the first place.

I may have less issue with the Su-Wook relationship because I have watched the C-version but with LJK as 4th, you just want the attention all to him and it's not easy to board a different ship other than his.

The problem is LJK. He is too good and beyond that not even one strong performance by his co-stars could steal the thunder from him. His portrayal as Wang So is just like a drug, you know it's not good for your health but so addictive. You couldn't get enough of him, you just keep wanting more.

I myself am tired of wook. But its not because of KHN. its because his character is not going anywhere. He is just giving love filled glances to HS. And that love story too is stalled. There is no conflict. They don;t move forward or backward. But i think the next episode where WS asks for HS from the king, will finally get wook moving. I am hoping there is more to him now that his love is in danger of being whisked away.

Ahhh recap is here! Thank you Heads!!

Such a good episode, seems like we're finally getting into the machinations for the throne now. Definitely took me on a roller coaster of emotions but again what else is new...some highlights for me when I watched the RAW version:

-Anything to do with Baek . Of the younger princes BA is my favorite, too good and too pure for this world. I loved that he went to check up on So afterwards and I love seeing him and Soo continue their friendship and even in the ritual when he wanted to follow So.

-That boat scene. I'm allllll about accidental falls that brings a couple into unexpected contact. It's one of the oldest tropes but I love it and that look So was sending her way...*fans self* rawr.

-Lady Oh and Su's interaction..I'm going to love the hell out of this budding relationship aren't I? I'm slightly worried that Lady Oh sees her younger self in Su because it didn't really turn out so well for her it looks like...

-Ji Mong and Wang So's conversation which was basically a pep talk. I'm more curious than ever as to why Astronomer dude is so invested in seeing Wang So succeed. Why? Why is he Team Wang So?

Be back later for more!

I don't know why but I keep having bad feelings about Ji Mong (from the first day he and Soo met again in Goryeo). Despite the fact that they are both from the future, he does not seem to care much about her or really want to help her with anything. I think the reason he invests so much in Wang So is because he is well aware that So will end up becoming King and he should be on the right side.

Yeah Ji Mong is such a curious character. He definitely wants Wang So to step up and be in leadership whether it be next to the Crown Prince or even King himself? But seriously, why?! Then there's the suggestion that he is from the future too like Su? Want to know more about him too.

Thanks for the amazing recap Heads! I could say lots of things about the loopy editing, but mostly I just want to focus on the amazing that is So today omg.

Many Beanies have mentioned this in the recap for the previous episodes, but it seems to be a Goryeo inclination to want and hide flaws in order to fit into their ridiculous beauty standards. Wook has displayed this by literally giving Su a jade bracelet to cover up her wrist scar with when he already knows that she thinks very little of it. So hides his scar and his mental state is basically wrecked because of it (I wept a little as he admitted being "fickle" about the reactions he wants to see to Baek Ah). Everybody throws rocks and mud at So because he wears a mask--it's like he doesn't get to win because of his scar, since he gets pelted with crap whether he wears that mask or not.

Su has been called a Candy in sageuk clothes numerous times, but I really appreciate her frankness in wanting to help the people around her. Today's episode would never have been able to happen if Su wasn't genuine in her care for people she considered her friends--in fact, her concern for them is what turns that hide-your-flaws Goryeo trope on its head. Her helping to hide So's scar isn't because she's afraid to see it or of the consequences--it's only because she knows it's his deepest, darkest taboo, and can only be defeated by showing his critics (i.e. everybody in Goryeo) that overcoming it is possible. And for that to happen, how much faith did So had to have in Su? I really loved the paralleling callback to when he said Su was his, because now he trusts her so much that, I quote, "I am yours". (SWOONTOTHEPOWEROFINFINITYYYYYYYY)

I also love that once the scar is gone, its power over So disappears as well. Loved, loved, LOVED the panicked look on Yo's face when he realised that he had nothing else in his arsenal to use against So and prevent him from conducting the rain ceremony. I also loved how Yo recognised that So was more perceptive about the workings of the palace than any of the princes who had been raised there, and then was too afraid to tell his mother that. That really puts in perspective how pampered the other princes are, which makes their throne ambitions quite laughable, especially Yo's. But what I loved the most was So's ability to read what everyone around him was doing (his conversation with Ji-mong was enlightening), and despite his fears and treatment at the hands of his people, he was still willing to give it a go. He was still willing to try and entrust his face, his entire pride and ego perhaps, to Su's Goryeo-style BB cream. That's what I think really makes So's character for me, that despite his horrid life he still retains his intelligence and the ability to trust people who deserve it. Su may have been sent back to ensure that he shines in the darkness, but he's the only one who can make Gwangjong happen.

The foreshadowing of Gwangjong wasn't done in the most subtle way ever (sudden cut! Red hues! Lee Junki in glorious eyeliner!), but I do love that the script incorporated elements of the Mandate of Heaven into Su's inner revelation of Gwangjong's identity. In Ji-mong's words, "a slave who can make rain fall is able to become king", let alone So who already is a prince to begin with. I love that rain fell only because of and for him, when he was the sole person at the ceremonial altar with both Crown Prince Mu (Hyejong) and Yo (Jeongjong) out of the picture. It may be man that decides the final victor of the race to the throne, but the heavens chiming in to declare to Goryeo that ultimately So is the only king who truly has their approval? It's something that neither Taejo or even Queen Sinmyeongsunseong can deny, and to the latter a stinging slap to the face as well. Ah, the beginning of sweet, sweet revenge. Really well done on this front, I think! But now that Su has a clear idea of who Gwangjong is, what is she going to do?

In other news: Soon-deok is still too good for Eun, who seems to be clueless about how the food he eats gets to his table or/and everything in this world. Court Lady Oh is taking the tough love approach on Su that I sort of appreciate. More So/Baek Ah bromance yesssssss! Also, did anyone else see that twitch in Wook's face when So's name was picked by Taejo to host the rain ceremony? I think the cover for his desire to ascend the throne is slipping, and it's actually kind of great.

Ok can't wait for tomorrow. Things are picking up, and I'm ready for the ride wooo.

I'm so glad Baek Ah went to apologize to So and how So also opened up to his brother. Their conversation is short but gold!!!
It's just so nice to see Baek Ah truly cares for and admires his hyung, he knows which kind of tea and snacks So likes, he tried to follow So when he ran away from the ritual... I think Baek Ah will find out about SoSu soon, he seems so quick at reading others' feelings lol

Me too!! Baek Ah is really shaping up to be one of my most favourite characters in the cast, and I love his sincerity and genuineness in his relationships with, well, almost everyone. Aw yes wasn't it the cutest when he knew what So loved the most?? And yes I totally agree that he's going to pick up on So/Su the first, because he's just so quick on the uptake.

All of this is just going to break my heart further when Baek Ah's own tragic loveline happens, right? :(

Yeah, Baek-ah is positioned as the observer, so I bet he's going to find out about So/Su pretty quick.

Though I think he may have been beaten to the punch by Wook, who of course has his own reasons to be hyperaware of Su looking at another man.

When Baek Ah was going to run after So during the first attempt at the rain ritual, but was stopped by the 14th prince, I was upset, haha. WHY ARE PEOPLE GETTING IN THE WAY OF THIS BEAUTIFUL BROMANCE????

I just find it lowkey hilarious how Baek Ah x So is close to being its own version of a typical k-drama loveline, haha. There's size difference, someone getting pulled around by the wrist, etc. We need more of this friendship, especially since So is going to be needing more people to rely on. ;A;

I KNOW right?? I was like ugh Jung, why are you holding Baek Ah back from being an excellent brother?? Haha you're so right on Baek Ah/So though, but I do appreciate that Baek Ah treats So with respect and tries to help him get out of his shell. Love how their relationship is shaping up to be like in the original BBJX (and in history as well), where Yinzheng (no. 4) basically doted on Yinxiang (no. 13) like there was no tomorrow, and Yinxiang went to prison for him, and all that other bromantic stuff.

Yessss please let Baek Ah be his other pillar of support. So needs it on his way to becoming king.

like how instantly he changed his tone 180' from who cares, blaming to protective when the queen come in in the earlier ep and he defended So, saying he was the one rescued him..

he knows who treat him good.. maybe he just had too much to lose or cant get over how other might see him like how they sees his brother.. unlike baek ah whose 100% on so side haha.. thats so sweet

Loved all your thoughts!
Soon-deok is and probably always will be too good for Eun. I really like her father/daughter moments too.

Baek Ah/So friendship is delightful as is Su/Baek Ah friendship. I love that he's behind the scenes trying to help her do her job and make up with So. So cute.

Yes!! I love that Baek Ah is So/Su's little helper without either of them knowing lol. He's the cutest.

I also loved how Yo recognised that So was more perceptive about the workings of the palace than any of the princes who had been raised there, and then was too afraid to tell his mother that.

I loved seeing him actually shaken up by the realisation that So figured it out first - and it makes sense that So, the outsider of the group, is the one to have a clear view of the workings of the palace as well as the situation outside it. We've seen this in earlier episodes too - So can be thoughtlessly cruel but he knew what was happening in the border areas in episode 6 when he was trying to stop the king marrying Su, and now this.

Required fields are marked *

I think that had to be one of my favourite parts of the episode, seeing how Yo's preconceived, snooty perception of So was so sorely shaken by that discovery. Yo is who he is because of Queen SMSS, and it's sort of poetically tragic that he's realising if his mother finds out about So's true abilities, he can be replaced at any time. It's a good way of driving the character into a corner, which I think Yo is headed for in any case. He's the outright antagonist in the drama, but I also feel a little pity for him--unless, of course, he does something really shitty again lol.

Your observations about So are spot on! I do love the idea that he sees better than anyone else precisely because he's the furthest removed from the luxuries of the palace. Maybe that's why he's the best poised to be king as well.

Anyone else think Lady Oh is like Rouxi here?? She has a job similar to the original in BBJX and there looks like there might have been something between her and the king... Also comparing herself to Su..its like Lady Oh IS Rouxi's character here even with her health issues. I think it is pretty cool if that is what they were going for.

LJK took 6 months period during the filming this drama, and at the end by the time they finished shooting, he lost 30 pounds, so if you see carefully they shot different scenes at different times, like the chicken picnic lunch was the first day they started shooting, he was still his fuller cheeks, and I think the boat scenes also when he was still only lost few pounds, and the scenes with his mom after killing the priests, you can see he is very thin there.

He worked so hard for this drama, and he is amazing in it! I'm obsessed with this drama because of him :)

I loved how this episode showed Wang So's intelligence. I have the weird feeling that The King is actually very much aware of all the talent that his scarred son has, and little by little he is giving him the opportunity to shine. I mean why then send a General to train an 'abandoned prince' if you're not thinking of using him in any way? And I use the word 'Use' because King Taejo doesn't feel like the type to give fatherly affection.
I feel that so far in all his interactions with the princes he is always gauging/evaluating what they offer and what they are capable of.

Thank you for the recap, Heads!!

I loved this episode. It showed so much progress for our lead characters. I'm glad that So is considering being a contender for the throne. He has to get back at everyone who defied him just because he wasn't perfect physically. When he went for the rain ceremony the first time and was thrown dirt at, he looked so hurt. All the humiliation was there in his face.

When he went the second time, Yo was surprised that So's scar was gone. I loved how So looked all triumphant there and also when he was on the altar. (I loved the contrast of the current So and the future Gwangjong; LJK is so good!) And then it rained and So's expression at the end!! LJK is nailing all the minute expressions! Guy needs an award!

I loved the development of So/Su couple. It is in So's character to be upfront with what he wants and what he intends to do. It was great that he told Su his feelings right away, as opposed to Wook who thinks too much about how the situation will affect him. All the OTP scenes were lovely. We need more So and So/Su.

I hope Su doesn't become too scared of So because he was not a tyrant who went crazy and killed a bunch of people. He curbed the power of those clans who were wielding too much power. It was an era where the king needed to kill to survive. If he was not powerful, someone will be off with his head. Killing the siblings also happens when the kings feel that they are threat to him. I really hope that doesn't happen in our drama though. I love So way too much and love the other princes too.

I read a post in Soompi that said that Su loves So deep inside even though she doesn't realize it. Because she showers him with more attention than she gives any other person. Also she stayed up all night thinking of a way to help him, the only person she had eyes for during the ceremony was So, etc. There were other instances mentioned too. It makes me feel that the transition from Wook to So may become little less complicated as all she has to do is realize her feelings. Also she doesn't pull away from So's advances though she is stunned.

i do appreciate his role as the one lighting up the story. the story is quite heavy without him. The fight with Soo, etc. His childish acts and purity can somewhat blend with Soo's cute side. He kind of speaks his mind out like Soo does. So I don't see anything wrong with his character there. We do expect kids are spoiled brats (some) and I don't think royalties could be excepted in having one in the family. I don't get annoyed at him. Actually, when I encouraged my friends and sister to watch with me, the mood would lighten up when he's on screen. He made us laugh. Wook made us feel butterflies in our stomach and So makes our heart race. I'm still confused of the 9th Prince's role though. Won and Jung add nothing either so if they develop them a bit more it'd make them look less like decorations and more like actual characters. This is one of the things I'm disappointed about SH. I wish all the princes were introduced slowly rather then squeezing them all together from the start and not knowing on how to elaborate on them after

What a fast recap! thank you so much. Kudos :)

This episode by far paid all the debts of the previous flaws of this drama. What a great and awesome episode. Been longing to see LJKs unmasked and unscarred face, and its worth all the wait.

Felt the hurt in his eyes when those people throw muds at him and felt triumphant also when he reveals his glorious face to everyone's surprise and awe. plus the heavens rejoices with him as the rain came pouring.

Finally, the start of something new and exciting in this drama. LJKs sweet line to Su was so heart melting adding his intent gaze, gosh felt like time has been frozen and only the two of them exist. swoon worth indeed.

At last So has found a trustworthy person in Su, a best friend and a lover. I just hope Su brushed off the fear of knowing So as the King Gwangjong. Maybe there's a deeper story behind him killing his brothers.

Never been excited to see the episodes ahead. This episode just made my day. :) :)

I can't count how many times I replayed the whole "You are mine" sequence by now. It's just soooo - i can't even put a name on it. It makes your knees weak, and your insides warm.

Wook feels like your first love. But So... He is your epic and true love. it's all consuming and exciting. Can't wait for their romance to develop.

Im curious about Astronomer Jimong. I feel like he time travelled specifically for Soo/Ha Jin. I can't help but wonder if he deliberately searched for Soo's reincarnation to change the fate of the princes.

Ugh I feel so bad. I really want to know what the writers are thinking.. So far the plot with the Princes and the chase for the throne is a bit slow, yet still interesting and I can't wait for more>.< My only biggest issue is the romance line, especially the love triangle going on between Soo,So, and Wook. At the start I did like Wook and how nice he was to Soo, but I realized that took too much screentime that we barely got any time for So:( We're almost halfway into the series and by now Soo and Wook should have at least been done, yet it seems like they're not stopping, and then we have So who finally figured his feelings for Soo, but as much as I understand that he is all new to this, I wish they won't make him look as crazy and driven just to get Soo. I already feel bad enough that he is the neglected child, but please don't just make him go crazy over Soo and basically force her to him. I'm just afraid that at this point, they would be rushing Soo/So's romance

I'm seeing that giving Wook more screentime really is a great help in the story. It makes us appreciate the very little time So and Soo has. He is somewhat a protector of her and the story just showed the great deal with their romance, until Wang So gets her. Moreover, they're showcasing KHN's great acting prowess. Superb! the story seems to show us the difference between the two Princes in different aspects, but I'm afraid of the possibility that Wook will become more aggressive towards So (despite the fact the he's gentle) in the future episodes. They are almost opposite but there will be this "thing" that will definitely make Soo wants So more.

I honestly like Wook's personality in the story, but after this episode, I got shifted to So without knowing why or how, which tells me what a good story this is. I'm not a fan of either, and that made me focused on the story more.

Heh. Yep, they've apparently emptied Seoul of attractive people for this production. :)

After it was over, my hates-watching-subtitled-shows mother said "Do we have more of those?"

this was such a good episode and seems more cohesive compared to ones in the past?
i particularly enjoyed the juxtaposition between the elation of finally receiving rainfall and the fear of su's realization that so will become the next king and i'm looking forward to whether or not she truly altered history. regardless, i'm glad he's gaining confidence because he's honestly such a king.

baek ah saying he didn't want to look at so because he didn't want to disrespect him and so telling him to "always look straight at me, no matter what" was really nice, i enjoy their bond despite the fact that the drama hasn't shown the development of it.

i like baekhyun as a vocalist but he's honestly so annoying in this drama... i understand that that's just his character and he's not even a particularly bad actor but he's just so one dimensional and they could be airing much better material, for example, so and su's almost kiss scene.

court lady oh's scenes were very well done and i enjoyed seeing not only her empathy and understanding of su (how cute was that porridge scene?!) but also realizing how much she sacrificed for the damiwon. i can't imagine eating only soupy, non flavored things for the rest of my life. also, her "would you rather i deliver the medicine to the king?" was so incredibly sassy, i yelled.

the last scene was also well done, everything from the music (it was suspenseful, almost sinister?) to the close up. i loved the details of so's scar being revealed due to the rain and i adored the fact that it started raining as soon as he stepped on the platform. redemption is so sweet.

i know this may not have been intended to be funny but when so was flicking the leaf around during the ritual, i couldn't help but laugh. he was so solemn but it was just a funny gesture.

also, lee jun ki is so (no pun intended) hot omg

I swear by Makeup Forever - I have yellow undertones as well, & find they have a large selection of shades which work for me.

If you have darker skin w/yellow undertones, you might try 'Black Up', which has a range specifically for dark skin.

Kay - I'm not Korean, so I watch the subtitled (international) version first, read the recaps (sometimes spoilers, but I skim over those - mostly it's helpful to set the context), then head over to watch the raw (un-subtitled, SBS broadcast version) on Dramayou. Having watched the subtitled version first makes it easier for me understand some of the unsubtitled dialogue that happens in new scenes.
The general tone of the episodes seem to be the same, with some swapping out of scenes between both versions.

Well that's interesting. I watched this ep already expecting that I would feel a bit frustrated because I don't get to watch the same version of the episode others will, but I really enjoyed this one.

Because the So/Soo exchange (once Soo was done with the makeup) was skipped entirely in my version, I didn't even realize that the scene needed that emotional reaction from So seeing his 'new' face. At least not right away, cause the show could always cut to that later on when we don't expect it. Or so I thought.

Imma save up to buy the box set for this drama (hopefully with director's cut in it) so I can retreat to my cave and justify my love for it, BvS DoJ style.

What an episode! With the exception of a couple of rushed scenes with the crown prince etc., I felt that it flowed pretty smoothly, moved all sorts of plot points and character development, before ending with a bang.

Particularly liked two scenes - one where Court Lady Oh does the king's hair in solitude - there is such a quiet intimacy to that scene, and hints at something deeper between them that can only be expressed through her duties to him.
Similarly, Su tending to So's scar, and him trusting her to it.
I adore Wookie too, so am preparing to have my heart torn asunder in just a little bit.

I watched the Dramafever version, started reading the recap, ran off to watch the last few scenes in the raw version, came back to finish the recap, lol. I almost wish they'd release all scenes they shot, I might watch all 200 hours of it, I just might...

LJK really does those close-up shots justice - he goes from pitiable to indifferent to proud and to murderous in the span of a few scenes. Love that he is all of it - the wronged prince who just wants to be loved and a psychopath all in one.

I get more the sense he was on the verge of sociopathy when he first arrived (a learned response because of abuse rather than inborn like psychopathy). I'm hoping we learn more about him because we really haven't learned much at all except that he can be cruel, he is definitely smart and good at martial arts, and he is vulnerable because of his scar. But now a struggle for the throne might be starting, and I'm wondering what qualities he'll have to govern and play at politics, or be a lover, or be a brother in times of stress.

I posted this up at Soompi while waiting for this recap. It seems to have made it onto their most FAQ thread! I developed it a little on the thread here ep 7 but this is the elaborated version. Sorry for length!

The premise is that Hae Soo is not just some girl from the 21st century randomly chosen to go back in time, but that she is a reincarnation of the founding of Korea itself - whoever she chooses to give her heart to will become the king that guarantees the success of the new nation of Goryeo.

This theory stems from her names - Go Ha Jin and Hae Su- and from her association with water.

Korea's foundation myth is built on the founding of Goguryeo, the kingdom preceding Goryeo. (Korea takes its name from Goryeo which in turn took its name from Goguryeo).

There are two versions, but basically the river god's daughter, Yuhwa, is found in or by the water by Hae Mo Su, she marries him and gives birth to Jumong who founds the kingdom of Goguryeo. Another version has her marrying but leaving him before granting her heart to another and then giving birth to Jumong. In effect, whoever she chooses to love becomes the father of the nation.

I wouldn't have paid much attention to this myth except for a few things. One is that Hae Su is associated with water like the river king's daughter. She falls into water, appears almost miraculously in the Goryeo baths, which as we saw is right on the river/hot springs, has visions in water, is first seen by all the princes (all potential heirs to the throne) in the water, and even Wang So must see her in a later scene - as if the first water appearance had left him out so she has to go re-do it - emerging from the water of the baths and she later splashes Wang So with water - like a baptism - while watering plants. Other water scenes include splashing a basin of it over Crown Prince Mu and spilling Yo's tea in addition to "watering" So (thanks Bluemoony) - all of them will become kings, and she spills on no other princes.

I think we're supposed to draw a connection between Hae Su and the river god's daughter Yuhwa. Whoever she chooses will become the leader of the nation. This is perhaps also highlighted by the princes falling in love with her - she represents the lifeblood - water - of the land. (Continued...

This is emphasized by her name. The original royal family of Gogureo were the Haes, stemming as said from Hae Mo Su and Yuhwa. Twice we are told that Hae Su belongs to the Hae Ha Jin clan. So she's a Hae, and her modern time name is Ha Jin. But she's Go Ha Jin not Hae Ha Jin in modern times, so there's a glitch there, until a little research reveals that many of the royal Hae family took the royal name Go. So when we're told by Hae Su's relatives that the clan name is Hae Ha Jin, it's actually the same name as Go Ha Jin, her name in the future.

I like all these associations because it layers the story with myth, legend and a history that both precedes and post-dates Goryeo, tying in the Goryeo events with ancient Goguryeo and present day Korea. The throughline is our main character, Hae Su/Go Ha Jin. Her first incarnation was likely as the river god's daughter, Yuhwa, or a daughter of Hae Mo Su and Yuhwa, who reincarnates as Hae Su and eventually Go Ha Jin, a cosmetologist from the 21st century. Her purpose is to choose the best founder for the fledgeling nation. All subliminal, of course, but it's giving the story a texture I hadn't thought about previously, as well as a context for the otherwise somewhat awkward bath scene in the first episode. She's meant to be found in the water a la the river god's daughter by possible contenders to the throne - the scriptwriter took that and gave us the semi-erotic bath scene. I appreciate that scene so much more now!

Edit to add: Since I posted, I have watched episode 8 with subs. I found it interesting that Su has two romantic encounters with each of her potentials. The first is with Wook in a cave with a "covered well". Thinking about the placement of water, this water is still, protected, controlled, covered up underground. This is quite possibly a metaphor for the life Wook offers Su, a metaphor reinforced by his scar-covering bracelet. Compare this to her encounter with So in the boat. While the water would normally be free-flowing, it is a little muddy, becalming the ship where these two accidentally lie together, equals. All that water needs, however, is a little rain to float the boat. And we get rain at the end of the episode - so this particular Wook-Su "ship" seems ready to sail. I noticed too that Su says in this episode that what she wants most is not to be controlled. So of the two, protection or freedom, I think her choice is clear even if she is only just beginning to realize it this episode.

Thanks pogo! The imagery to me is so cohesive it's become pretty convincing. We'll see as the show goes on. But it's the script writer that deserves the kudos. Who knew a kdrama writer could intertwine all this Korean history, myth and symbolism, while adhering to the original in terms of theme and progress? I've said it before, the scriptwriter for this drama is brilliant.

So much nerdy goodness Barbrey!! I like the idea of Su/Ha-jin being tied into the founding myths of not one, but two nations. It really does shake up the plot, and gives it more depth. We were talking about why Ha-jin, of all the people in Korea/the world, had to be sent back to Goryeo as Su, and you've given an excellent theory as to why she was the particular chosen one. Great job on finding out that most of the Hae clan took on the Go surname!!

The water theory is also super interesting. Most of Su's important scenes do revolve around water, and I love the idea of how water plays out differently in her interactions with Wook and So. It's true that she doesn't seem to know her heart's true desire yet, but clearly her actions already seem to indicate where it lies (So, for sure).

Thank you "kumoiwa". English lit nerd to the bone, but figuring out the Korean history has been a frustratingly long haul. I think I, and many others, on here would have seen this before if we knew it. Too bad the Korean public isn't watching it more because it's playing with their foundation myths, and I expect many of them would identify the imagery.

The Wang So-Hae Su ship has definitely begun with this episode - the rain announced it. Now comes the relationship, as well as the struggle for the throne and nation.

In answer to the Korean mythology/history and how I researched it - footnotes! Seriously, there is practically nothing on the web but if you read the footnotes, you get a lot more info. The Yuhwa info was right in a wikipedia article though - it's likely the most famous myth in Korea because it's the foundation myth.

Please, anything BUT a chaebol reincarnation. You really want another one?

Ok, this is seriously mind blowing, thanks for the hard work.

I know we've had some genius moments of the writer in previous episodes where some people (including me) have been wondering if it was intentional or a mere coincidence (e.g. horse slash vs. wrist cut, the meaning of the scars, etc. etc.) but now I really think the script is a lot better on paper than what the production team made out of it.

I haven't done much discussion on the scars/slashes but they are definitely being used symbolically as well as literally, no question. They are probably the biggest symbols in the story. Thanks for the recap, Heads!

I guess we finally get to see the scene that we've been anticipating for a while, which is Su utilizing her make-up skills for So's scar. I love that scene when So's emotions were all in his eyes as he tried to wrap his head around the fact that this girl in front of him is unafraid of his scars. In fact, she was willing to touch his face gently and even lean so close to apply the make-up. I loved the moment when their faces were just a few centimetres apart. I agree that I wish I would've seen more of his reaction (surprise, joy, bewilderment, gratitude, etc.), but it's not so bad to see him embracing her and the almost-kiss. XD I love the "I'm yours, you're mine" reversal as well.

I think So-Su scenes are the most enjoyable to watch for me, so I like the boat scene and their other exchanges.

The ceremony for the rain prayers was really well portrayed by contrasting day 1 vs. day 2 with So plus mask and So sans mask. Citizens can be so fickle and one can easily see how the scarless So would make people attribute it to divine intervention. Gotta admit my heart broke for So on day 1 to get that kind of humiliation and hatred. How much more crap and pain does this guy need to endure?! So, I'm glad to see the turn-around by the end. But the quick switch from So to King GJ was scary and I can see why Su is shocked and frightened.

Wook catching on to Su helping So certainly does seem to make him feel jealous and one can almost see the wheels turning in his head. I feel that on the surface, he's the quiet one, but deep in his mind, I think he does want to vie for the throne. Just that he hasn't done anything obvious yet to allow the main contender (Yo) to suspect beyond what Yo personally guessed (convo with YH about her wanting Wook to be king).

I like that Su has Court Lady Oh on her side and I was cheering when Oh stood up against Queen SMSS. *fist pumps* I hope they continue to support each other in the palace.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to how So and Su will get closer... What would he do to pursue her and move her heart? What would she do now that she knows he's probably GJ? How will she overcome her fear? Can't wait for the next ep!

On a side note, I gotta get something off my chest cuz after watching the SBS version of last week's ep's, I finally got around to watching the Youku/DramaFever version last night. So, SBS's re-edits = taking out pretty much all the Jung parts (at the funeral, during the Soo rescue, after Soo cut her wrist, various interactions in the palace, etc.) Of course, other scenes got cut as well, but this just really sucks, especially since I want to see more Jisoo in this. I know he's not an important prince in this plot (in contrast to the original) even up to this point in time, but he already barely has any screen time or lines. So, to know that that's what got sacrificed in the re-edits really bothers me. And if people only watch domestically (including probably Jisoo's family and friends), they might never know or might not bother to watch the other version for the missing scenes.

Not to mention, I found other scenes that got cut can actually explain things better. For example, how Soo ended up being sent to work under Court Lady Oh instead of being punished. Also, the fact that Queen S witnessed Soo leaving after tending to the Crown Prince's skin and overheard his comment to Court Lady Oh not to treat Soo too harshly because his pain lessened. That seems likely to be a scene that will be linked to a future plot.

I just feel that for the re-edits, there were unnecessary scenes that were kept (i.e., Eun with the puppets) that could've been shortened and maybe some of these missing scenes could've been included instead. Now, it's like I gotta watch every ep. twice to get the whole picture with both versions so that I don't need to make so many leaps in logic myself because of the missing scenes. And to see more of our puppy Jisoo, who keeps getting shafted.? *sigh*

Omo, this drama is affecting me so much. I'm feeling so nervous about the next episode what with So and Wook being all weepy with So's declaration of feelings for Su. I'm afraid of the rejection Wang So might get from Su, his pain and how it might make him villainous :'( Wang So please be strong!

Anyone else here thinks that Court Lady Oh is hiding more damage to her body than we've been told? I remember Wook's mother telling her to get checked by an imperial physician, because they both suffer "from the same problem", and then in this episode she says that she can't eat anything else but porridge because she wants to taste her teas well. I believe in her devotion to her craft, but I also feel like she and Wook's mother have been subject to some sort of horrible treatment, like poisoning or even forced abortion by Queen SMSS. Tragic and cruel, but pretty common if an imperial consort was to assert her clout.

It sort of explains why Court Lady Oh is so vested in her protection of Su, in that she understands the underhandedness and viciousness of the palace harem, and how hard it is to survive without the backing of a powerful clan. Su's friendliness with the princes have already caused her trouble, and I bet Court Lady Oh can tell that Wook/Su is a thing (and maybe even So/Su). If Su is romantically entangled with any one of them, Court Lady Oh would be the one who knows the best about the tragic consequences to follow. Well, that's my take on it anyway!

It's hard to say whether there's poison involved (you'd think they'd have stopped it already). I got the impression that the headaches and stomachaches were tension and stress induced by the Queen B*tch.

I absolutely agree with your analysis of Court Lady Oh. I'm of two minds whether she is going to foreshadow Su's fate if So marries Yeon Hwa, or whether she'll be an object lesson to Su if So marries Yeon Hwa. Su won't want to repeat a pattern she's seen first hand in Lady Oh and the King.

I feel like it could be the lingering effects of having been poisoned, if it really happened? I don't think Queen SMSS is below any of these underhanded methods, and she does look like she wants everybody in Taejo's harem to take a permanent trip to Hell. Maybe this is why Yeonhwa hates her so much too--I do believe Queen SMSS had a hand in causing Wook's family to be cast out of the palace + bodily damage to their mother.

I agree with you, that Court Lady Oh may act as a foreshadowing figure for Su's ultimate fate. I do think that she'll be the first one, even before Baek Ah (who's been set up as the most observant person in the entire drama), to realise what kind of dangers Su has to face if she decides to be with either Wook or So. In So's case, the stakes are even higher, and given how much Court Lady Oh cares for Su, she may play a critical role in how Su makes her final decisions.

I tease my officemate who started to watch ML if she had watched ep 8 because if not she will be missing half of her life.
She said, she waited till midnight for it.
Well, i told her, grinning from ear to ear, you better watch it or you will regret it.
I had watched the raw version because I waited till 1:00 in the morning.?
It is intense, so moving!!
I watched the part where Hae Soo conceals the scar of Wang So almost 10 times and still loving it.!!

This is sort of off topic but does anyone know what Yeonhwa was saying in that early episode about So's mom? She was asking Wook something along the lines of if he'd forgotten what the Queen had done?

I mean there's obviously a lot of shady stuff she's got her hand in but that particular scene made it seem more personal to Wook/Wook's mom and I've just suddenly begun wondering about it.

Probably. We knew their family had lost favour or power and they were exiled for a period. Then later came this comment about what Queen Yoo had done. It's likely to be connected but hasn't been clarified what role she played.

@Barbrey - this is what I love about dropping by DB for recaps and reading comments. My mind is fed with so many insights and its worth it.

That was an awesome analysis of Hae Su's character as river gods daughter. Come to think of it that the portal used in entering the Goryeo dynasty was through that river and all her visions involved water in it.

Seems like I can understand and fully connect now to the context of this story. thanks for the very insightful comment.

I just hope that with Su's involvement and connection in choosing the next King will help So maintain the good side of him and not be overtaken by his other desires (the bad ones if there's any). :)

Me too! I am still wondering, though, if she inhabited an alternate future where the historical record says Wang So killed all his brothers; thus, if or when she returns to the future, history will have changed to what the real Korean history says because she'll have prevented that from happening. That's because Wang So in history only killed one of his brothers, justifiably, that we know of - Wang Won - though possibly had a hand in Yo's death. He did go on to kill two of his nephews when they rose up against him as well. But Su's notion that he killed all his brothers is wrong.

So she might make a difference; she might not. More importantly, though,is that Wang So was the right man for the job at that point in history, bloody as it became because of all the clans fighting to take away the throne from him.

That made me curious too, if her character will alter any of the history. We noticed from the past episode that So didn't answered back the general's question regarding his very reason for staying in the palace.

I believe Su will play an important role in maintaining So's innocent character and eventually mold him and help him become a good king that's why Ji Mong transported her back to this era.

And its possible that Su's recollection of history is wrong, since she knows too little of what really happened in the past. If this is the case, I hope she'll recall the truth and have faith in So.

There's no reason to be afraid Su, let the love begin please.

Yes to all except ... do you think So's really innocent? I don't. I think he has a very realistic idea of palace politics. We've seen him vulnerable, but not innocent. Su's the innocent, just like we would be, with a steep learning curve ahead of her if she's going to operate at a high level. Being head of state means always putting it first, and if that means sending people to war, people dying because of your mistakes, executing family members or clans that are jeopardizing the nation, then that's what you do. One thing I read was that Taejo actually left written instructions to his heirs to destroy the clans and families that helped him become king because the nation couldn't survive now with their claims on the crown. Neither Mu nor Yo were able to do so and it was chaos when So took over and saw the truth of his father's advice. Of the 3200 supporters, only 60 were left when So dies 25 years later. Some would have naturally died off but that's a very small number.

he was "innocent" outside of the palace: like an animal what kill for the surviving if it's necessary, but in the palace he changed.
they called him wolf-dog and both wolves and dogs need a pack, but in the pack you fight for your place in the hierarchy
(he is a bit similar to gilgamesh: at first both are somehow animalistic, but love and friendship changed both to human. and both died at the end)

I am kinda nervous how it will be if So becomes cruel. I know he is a king and is bound to kill his enemies but don't know if I can handle a cruel So. I have never seen LJK playing a ruthless character. Even the gangster Tae San was sympathy-evoking. There has to be first for everything, right?

I wonder where the OTP love story will go. Will Su be forcefully married to So (or be his servant) and continue to be scared of him? Will Su reject him and break his heart? What will function as the catalyst for her letting go of her feelings for Wook? Most of all, how will So react to Su's rejection? Will he take a step back or be obsessive and go after her full force?

So did pull back today when he realized that Su looked petrified of the impending kiss; so, I can't believe he went in and kissed her tomorrow without her permission. Moreover, she did not struggle or push him away. I have hope that he gave her that kiss with her permission.

I wish we got four episodes every week instead of two. Lol.

About the first paragraph - I guess we already saw his cruel side when he killed all those monks. An innocent/sweet person would never do that. Lol. At that same time, a king can't afford to be innocent and sweet. I'm so conflicted I don't know what to do.

I know, right? He has been cruel before that is why its worries me that heartbreak and obsession might push him to the dark side. I hope not since he was shown as compassionate as well in other scenes.

Like I mentioned before, he reminds me of Bidam with his issues with mommy, love and the throne.

I hope Hae Su will give herself a chance to get to know him more instead of being wary of him because of her premonitions. It was her who said she will not change and will support him, I hope she doesn't turn back on her words. Although she also said it is important for her not to be controlled by others so I wish So will not suffocate her that way.

I also want her to give him a chance. Though it will be very hard, considering she is from modern times and killing is an absolute no-no in her mind (and our minds). Her falling in love with So would have been an easier road had there been no premonitions (She likes him very much; we can see that in her actions). But after the premonition, she is scared and wants to run away. I don't know how the story is gonna turn it around to make her fall for him. Looks like this is gonna be an angst-filled ride.

From his side, I want him to give her space like you said. The preview for episode 10 shows him pursuing her more gently so we have hope.

the philosophy still remains shallow,
in the palace when they groomed king and have tons of eyeliner, one kid doesn't get make up?
you can say it the show premises but it still likes an overreaction to make a conflict, or to promoted the black cream in the future Su memory,

I probably the very minority who didn't like Wangsa because he is the epitome of another super invaded male character that just grabs and pulls the girls because it swoons the viewer,
if we want a constant relation to his attitude, he is more likely someone who doesn't like to near a woman (cause he as mom issue) and he just appear suddenly everywhere,
what's with that super close almost kiss and Su who told to have bf in future react like a middle schooler?

if she starts liking wang so before break up with wook then there go my faith for this show,
at least, she needs to have something than magically attain the cream which the leaf just suddenly available,
everything is so convenient here to make swoon moment ala kdrama because the male lead is gorgeous,

We talked about the scar issue many times before. It was a big deal for royalty. And giving make up to So? No one even cares that So exists, let alone offer him makeup.

Su is the only person he trusts and has on his side 100% (maybe except for Baek Ah). She is the first person who talked to him without fear and was nice to him. When he realized that he has feelings for her, of course he is gonna pursue her. He is a guy who goes to any lengths to do what he thinks is right. He is impulsive, upfront, and (going to be) possessive.

The story is good even with the flaws in the OSTs, close-ups, and editing. Lee Jun Ki is gorgeous but he is also a very good actor. We are not just swooning coz of his face, it's coz he is talented and make us feel what So feels in each scene.

I wondered about that too. Kdrama episodes for me are at least an hour, and they have very little lead up with opening credits if at all. In Canada and the U.S., episodes tend to be 52 minutes long to leave room for commercials. (I mean, Koreans have it pretty good if all they have is PPLs but no commercials). So for an international audience, they might have had to cut down a whopping 8 minutes of time. What bothers me, though, is when compared, most of those minutes of cut time involve Wang So, and that's who we want to see more of. In this last instance, it was absolutely criminal that they cut off his after-makeup scene where he clearly declares his intention of pursuing her. Perhaps the editors felt they couldn't cut anywhere else because of story progression, who knows?, but it still felt like a crime.

And... The story finally begins !

Although I like Wook, I just couldn't wait for the story to focus on So. This episode was great , but ohmygawd, why did one important scene didn't show up in my version of the show ?! I know the reason but it's just so frustrating as a viewer.

Anyway, the episode left me with so many questions about the rest of story. Is Su going to fall for So? If so, when/soon? Is she going to avoid So first (for fear)? Or will she try to convince him not to become ruthless? Will she actually be the one setting historical events in motion ?

Why did she come from future , and why her specifically (because of her make up and dermatology related skills ?)? Why did she get transported to the past through that pond, and why at that moment?

Will Wook change and not be so nice anymore?
Will So become King Gwangjong and will he bring terror due to his personality? Or for revenge or by bitterness? Or will he actually want to be kind but was forced to be ruthless?

I hope the next episodes will move on with the storyline and will start answering those questions soon.

In the meantime, I'm going to go rewatch that make up scene til the end of episode!

I feel like I have never had to work so hard to watch a drama before ... been so impatient waiting for Lee Jun Ki (ugh my love) to finally come out, and now that the focus is starting to shift to him, his scenes are different in both subbed and raw! Driving me crazy ): if this drama didn't have LJK I would have bowed out a long time ago, but I will persevere for one of my most favorites. Time to prepare myself for watching subbed, watching raw, and reading recaps each episode at a time ...

What my takes on this awesome episode are:
- We finally got the answer of the qotd from last episode. Pity was how So interpreted Soo's look. Getting pitied by the woman he falls in love with, no wonder he was that mad. But you can't hate someone that much w/o loving her that much. See how he subtly caressed her wrist before releasing it? I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing.
- So-Baekah bromance was so sweet it almost threatened the main loveline.
- So was one poor conflicted soul. He needed attention but at the same time he hated it. Maybe that's the reason why he reacted that way to Soo.
- I'm intrigued by how Goryeo people reacted when So led the ritual. It was like he had commited an unforgivable sin that he deserved to be stoned and mud-thrown. I still have hard time accepting that his scar was the only reason he deserved all the hate.
- The covering scar scene is intense and full of emotion, my heart literally palpitated when she caressed his scar. I love the way So's face softened when she said he was a good person and that was what mattered most. You can tell from his eyes how deeply in love he was when he told her she was his. Suave LJK, suave.
- Soo immediately held Wook's bracelet after So confessed to her and almost kissed her. Well girl, that was one act of guilty feeling. I'd say she did feel the spark with So but she was way too smittened with Wook, and she tried her best to be loyal. She tried to remind herself she was alrd tied with Wook.
- So's winning moments over Yo and his mother deserve slow clap or even standing ovation. I'm satisfied he could at least once make them speechless after what they had done to him.
- Seeing how Goryeo people's attitude changed drastically only because of visible scar turning invisible, I can't help thinking how shallow these people are. Something so simple as BB cream could change a criminal to a king. This can only be possible in such a shallow world.
- Wook was not that happy seeing So's new look and unlike others, he knew too well who helped So. He is still quite hard to read but I expect something dark in him aching for the power and was kind of triggered by this event.
- Basically for now Soo is just a catalyst for things to happen on history. So wouldn't be accepted to lead the ritual if only she didn't cover his scar. Without knowing, she just helped paving the way for Gwangjong to ascend to the throne. I think she just realized what she had done the moment her vision of So as Gwangjong came out. She still can help him from being embraced by darkness though. But I wonder if her effort will only result in turning another prince evil?
- So had never set his eyes on the throne like Yo and (I think) Wook subtly does. He was happy enough to live with his family and was full of support for the crown prince. But at the last scene he looked quite full of himself that I wonder that's the moment he changed his mind and Gwangjong was born.

- Jimong is definitely the key. He looked amazed when So said that the ritual wouldn't alter the weather, and then he admitted that the name drawing was planned because he saw So's star shone the brightest. He wasn't surprised at all when he saw So scarless. The last one is he looked all too satisfied when So succeeded the ritual. It seems like he has seen it all coming and I believe he is responsible for Soo time travelling, whether to change history or to be the catalyst for the history to play out the way it is.
- Anyone notice how the last scene shows So's scar slowly re-appeared? I thought because it got washed by rain but looking closer I find them like deliberately making it resurface. I wonder what they try to deliver, to me it's more like eventhough So gained his position by covering his scar, at the end of the day the scar is still there. He is no more that lowly wolf dog prince, he is now a potential king chosen by heaven yet that very same scar still exists. It's some kind of statement that the scar doesn't determine a person, thus destroying one of the main principles Goryeo people hold dearly. It's just the beginning of more things he would destroy and change when he becomes Gwangjong.
- As for the preview, I don't like seeing Soo all scared and terrified of So. She told him he could trust her and she wouldn't change. I seriously can't stand Wook-Soo any longer, it's almost half of the drama, time to jump ship alrd please.
Sorry for long essay lol. I have nobody to spazz about this drama so DB is simply the cure. I enjoy reading all comments from Beanies, you are all amazing guys.

So-Baekah bromance was so sweet it almost threatened the main loveline.

haha, so true. i love those two together, the puppy and the wolf.

which reminds me - that general knows some darker side of WS from the past. he reminded him of how he dealt harshly with the government of the province (even when WS was protesting he wasn't sent as a foster son, but as a hostage.) WS replied then they had it coming for threatening the throne. i fear that's his mind's set-up for dealing with people who cross him. and we haven't seen much of that, lately - he has some deeper currents running under the whole mama-doesn't-love-me theme. he does suffer from a lack of love from people who should care about him, but maybe he's learned to block it away and not need love from anyone, actually. maybe that's why soo makes such huge progress with the man who doesn't show his face - literally, unless under a mask and/or makeup. she throws care - friendly care so far - at him and he can't deal with it cause that's one thing he never experienced. but he responds with the same mind-set he does everything else: makes her enter the "mine" category and then it's all okay with his world again. i fear he will become a ruthless and paranoid king, but i hope they make him more likable if that happens. how hard could it be? those times weren't all roses after all. he'd have a lot of provocation... it's just that i want my tortured prince to become a king happy with himself, at least, and not a tortured and angry king, too.

maybe the astronomer is a time guardian, lol. maybe he first went to goryeo, discovered gwangjong wasn't going to happen, so that history wouldn't happen as he knew it, and went to the present to get a catalyst to change everything in the too-many prince household so that there is a gwangjong and all's as he wants it to be. maybe all the other princes on offer would've made a bigger mess than wang so as gwangjong, so he was the only one who could be king in the end, no matter how bloody his reign.

as long as baek-ah and so remain friends, everything goes :D

p. s. and where's that princess from last episode? did she get forgotten too? who is she supposed to marry, in history?
lol @eun and puppy love from the general's daughter. practical girl, i like her. and eun needs some butt-kicking still. i'm not sure i can forgive him his stupidity. if he does on wang so's bad side - more than he already did - i won't be crying over him.

Yes we are all shallow in some extent, but compared with the modern world, I find the Goryeo time (in this drama) almost unacceptable. See how Soo wonders how can a palm-size scar makes So's whole life miserable. That's how the modern people would think. Goryeo people could only imagine what was behind the mask, yes, but even if it was indeed terrible, it's not right to determine a person based on his physical quality. Come to think if it, So had never really done any harms to those people, they just get too absorbed with the idea that physical quality determines a person as a whole. Modern people have what's called physical attractiveness stereotype too, but I believe most of us is not that in that level of ignorance. Soo is simply the representation of the modern people. She is attracted to Wook because he is physically way more attractive than So (lets just forget he is LJK) but she doesn't let the scar blinding her from seeing So as a person. She may first get repulsed by his scary physical quality but she wills to dig deeper and in the end the physical quality doesn't affect her perception of him; he's a good person, with or without scar.
It's still a long way to go but humanity does improve.

i agree with you in many ways - but the history teacher in me advises that the comparison from this point of view (the so called modern values and ancient values) are somehow wrong and unecessary (the difference beetwen us and the ancient people - as human beings - it's to small. we think that we are so better in our moral values but a thin veneer of civilization is like wang so's make-up: the first rain washes it away)

i completely agree!! especially when ppl in the palace are selfish and care only for themselves and is always on wary mode (when So was telling haesoo about whats its like in the palace)..

its already touching if So was just an ordinary prince in the palace.. but with So extreme bad childhood, conditions of lifes and experiences, the bromance seems to make it even more valuable and precious..

omo, wang so is showing signs of obsession already. he definitely looked soooo pleased having the people bow down - when before they threw things at him - and the only little difference is some makeup. he's a smart man, he'll have already learned a bit of manipulation of the masses isn't a bad thing for a wannabe king to do...
that - i'm yours, you're mine - scene doesn't look so romantic to me either - he decided he wants soo, he's going to get her. doesn't matter she might want someone else.
on one hand, i can understand the man who never had anyone on his side - astronomer choi excepted - to want someone of his very own... but wang so, that's not how we win people!! (literally, lol.) on the other, he seems to have no people smarts when concerning girls - i wouldn't wonder if she decides she won't have anything of him because she's in luuuurve with wook. girl, look at those eyes. do you actually care he's impatient and bossy?! (yeah i know, i'm arguing both sides, but hey, it's LJK. get him first, ask yourself questions later, lol.)

the rain ritual scene was a wonderful sight - if only for the lack of (too many) close-ups. LJK definitely looked regal walking the gauntlet of surprised people, lol. do it again, LJK!!
and the best part - the astronomer fixed the selection, but he couldn't fix the rain, could he? everybody - wang so included - will be certain someone above is smiling down on wang so, lol. where's the crown prince? will he be disappeared conveniently somewhere, so that wang so can ruthlessly enter the competition for the throne?... show, no matter what you do, you'd better not have wang so and baek-ah at odds with each other because all the pretty should stand together. and baek-ah is definitely on team so all the way, at least for now.

and on a side note, does that makeup run off in the rain? cause i don't want to see another disaster, not when he's finally a bit more certain in himself and in showing his face to the world. but oh-ho-ho, wang yo's face :D
