Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 11

Now this is the kind of episode I’d been waiting for, and boy, does it deliver an emotional wallop. Everything seems to happen at once, leaving Su powerless against the much greater forces surrounding her. It’s not so easy for her suitors to swoop in and save the day this time, and the divide that causes may spell the end of one beloved relationship, while opening the door for another.

EPISODE 11 RECAP

So takes that one last, longing look at Su after ingesting the poison, and excuses himself before any of his symptoms can be revealed. Princess Yeonhwa jumps up as though to say something, but ends up merely smiling instead as she tells the king that she has a request on behalf of her brother, Wook.

As Su walks away, So stumbles in his attempt to follow her as the vision of her begins to blur. He reaches out his hand toward her, but it’s only when he coughs in a spray of blood that Su turns around and sees him. He falls, and Su immediately runs to his side to call for help.

He attempts to silence her so that she won’t be found with him, but he falls unconscious before he can tell her why. She just resumes her panicked cries for help.

Princess Yeonhwa claims that she also wants to make three toasts (as So did) before giving the king her requests. Queen Sinmyeongsunseong watches as Yeonhwa pours herself a cup from the crown prince’s tea. Even refreshed, is it still poisoned?

Her first request is for the king to let Wook remarry, prompting Wook to say that there is someone he has in mind. King Taejo permits the request without knowing who the girl is, and Yeonhwa brings the cup to her lips.

But instead of drinking, she stealthily pours the liquid down her sleeve. She acts as though she’s been poisoned, however, and dramatically swoons. Queen Sinmyeongsunseong scoffs at the act before announcing that it’s poison (as if she didn’t already know), while Yeonhwa weakly calls for them to help her half-brother, So.

Blood drips from the corner of Yeonhwa’s mouth as everyone around her panics. Baek-ah finds So and Su first, but the other princes aren’t far behind. Ninth prince Won immediately blames Su for serving the tea, though it’s Astronomer Choi who announces that she’s being arrested for attempted assassination of a prince.

Court Lady Oh watches as Su’s room is torn apart, though she recognizes that there’s a darker plan at work—Su wasn’t originally supposed to serve the tea, and the court lady who was has mysteriously gone missing.

Minister Park Young-gyu seems delighted when he finds a necklace (the one the crown prince gave her) among Su’s things, while one of the soldiers “finds” the vial of poison.

Queen Sinjeong frets as the royal doctor checks her daughter’s pulse, though he claims she’ll be fine. Only when the queen is gone does Yeonhwa rise from her bed, completely fine. She only pretended to drink the poison, she tells the doctor, and bit the inside of her lip to cause the bleeding.

This she announces freely to the doctor, while warning him to keep silent now that she’s freed herself from any suspicion. No one would believe that she willingly poisoned herself.

The antidote is spoon-fed to an unconscious So by another royal doctor as Astronomer Choi, Baek-ah, and Crown Prince Mu look on. Astronomer Choi notes that So just might make it because Grand General Park trained his body to resist poison, but neither of them can figure out why So would have drank three glasses. Surely he knew it was poison after the first.

Crown Prince Mu accurately guesses that the true target of the poison was him and not So, while Baek-ah and Astronomer Choi figure that he tried to leave before his symptoms could be known in order to protect the culprit. But who?

Wook finds said culprit curled up against the wall of a prison cell, and he takes in her bloodied hands when she grasps the wooden bars. He puts his hand over hers, but pulls away when her first question is to ask how So is doing.

Her concern for So seems to make Wook very unhappy, and it’s with a flat voice that he tells her that So will be fine. She needs to worry about herself now that she’s suspected of poisoning the tea, and while he believes in her innocence, there’s no proof.

He warns her that they might very well torture her to find out who was behind the poisoning, but he implores her to endure long enough for him to get her out. She puts on a brave face as she says that she won’t let them use her to frame someone else, so she’s prepared. (Hasn’t she ever seen a sageuk?)

At the next assembly, Minister Park posits that it was Crown Prince Mu who tried to poison So through Su. Mu vehemently defends himself, but Astronomer Choi stops him, lest he end up revealing his illness to the court.

Wook’s theory is that the poison was intended for the crown prince, but was accidentally given to So. Princess Yeonhwa’s poisoning proves as much, though it doesn’t alleviate any of the suspicion with regards to Su’s role in all of it.

King Taejo announces that Su will be hanged for her crime, but the crown prince isn’t willing to let another person die for him, even if it means keeping his illness under wraps. He asks that the king cast him aside instead, but Taejo refuses. Mu is his firstborn, and he wants to give him everything he can.

So attempts to leave his sickbed early to go to Su, who he knows must be alone and suffering. Wook updates him on the allegations against Su, and despite all of them knowing that it makes no sense, he can’t see a way to get her out of it. “I should have never let Hae Su get mixed up with you,” Wook adds, under his breath.

After sending Baek-ah away, So reveals to Wook that it was his mother who was behind the poisoning. At first, Wook accuses So of drinking the poison to protect his mother, but So claims that he did it to save Su and the crown prince.

So adds that he was trying to prevent anyone from finding out about it, but that all changed when Princess Yeonhwa drank the poison. He admits that he wasn’t able to say anything about it before it happened, but now he has to depend on Wook to expose Queen Sinmyeongsunseong’s machinations and save Su.

That night, So goes to the prison to see Su trembling on the floor of her cell, covered in blood from the day’s torture. She rises with great difficulty, yet her only happiness is in seeing that So isn’t dead. “You knew it was poisoned,” she says. Did he drink it in order to save her from suspicion?

So calls the theory nonsense, claiming that he’s not the kind of man to drink poison for a girl. Aw, you big softie. She sees through the lie and tearfully asks why he would do such a thing—did he think her feelings would change? But in her mind, she thinks, “Who am I that you would put your life on the line for me? If you do this, it makes it harder for me to turn away from you.”

He gives her a small smile, admonishing her for always causing him problems. There’s so much left unsaid between them as they manage to make light of the situation despite the severity of it all, as he tells her that she’ll be freed soon. She just sighs, “I don’t know what to do with you.” So replies in kind. That’s oddly sweet.

Meanwhile, Wook tracks down the court lady who first conspired with Princess Yeonhwa, now receiving another package from her. The princess is in disguise, so Wook uses his metal hairpin to threaten the court lady into revealing the truth—if she does, he’ll let her live.

He asks the cloaked figure to reveal himself, only to be taken aback when it’s his sister. The court lady uses the opportunity to make an escape, with Wook too shell-shocked to stop her.

The princess, ever the arrogant one, knows that Wook can’t reveal her crime without damning his entire family as traitors. When he demands to know why she did it, she fires back that he was about to throw away his chance to be king for that girl, and she had to stop him.

When he retorts that he has no desire to be king, she challenges him to search his innermost thoughts. Didn’t he feel wronged when So performed the rain ritual? She knows he wants to be king, and if he still denies it, he can throw both her and their mother away.

Wook suddenly throws the hairpin he’d been holding, and it lands straight in the scheming court lady’s neck. She knows as well as he does that he can’t just cast his own family aside. “From this point on, Yeonhwa, you are no longer my sweet sister. You are a debtor. You to me, and I to you.” He seems resigned to his fate as he says this, and Yeonhwa accepts his offer, though she claims she’ll repay that debt by giving him the throne.

Defeated, Wook says that she can now do with him as she wishes. He has no choice but to submit to her control in order to save his family, even if it means giving up on Su.

He still goes to the prison that night, clutching the bloody hairpin he removed from the court lady’s neck. He drops it outside and turns to leave after one tortured look.

Now fourteenth prince Jung feels like he has to take it upon himself to try and save Su if no one else will, but Wook only acknowledges the presence hiding in the room: Chae-ryung. She falls to her knees as she tearfully begs Wook to save Su. He remains silent, though her pleading makes him visibly uncomfortable.

So goes to the king to ask for Su’s life, even daring to ask if the king is so willing to sacrifice her for the crown prince’s sake. King Taejo doesn’t see the big deal in sacrificing a lowly life in order to save an important one, which So takes particular offense to. Is this what being king means?

Taejo clocks him for his impudence, and warns his son that he’ll kill him if he asks about Su again. The same will happen to anyone else who thinks to plead for her life.

Court Lady Oh visits the prison that night wearing a veil, and tears up at the sight of a bloodied and broken Su lying on the ground. Resolved, she returns to the palace to find Wook waiting for her. He has one request for her: “Stand up for Hae Su. You are the only one who can change the king’s mind.”

When she says that she can’t make such a request, Wook asks if she’ll just let Su die. “I know you feel like a mother to her,” he says, adding that he realized that was the reason Court Lady Oh never liked seeing Su with him. Court Lady Oh turns that back on him, asking why he can’t save Su—doesn’t he love her?

She accurately guesses that it’s his own household holding him back, and his own ambition for the throne. “The reason why men in the royal family become cowards is always the same,” she notes with disdain. “Someday, you will come to regret your cowardly actions today. This one time you turned your back on her will haunt you for the rest of your days.”

With this said, she assents to go to the king herself, since she does care for Su and knows that Wook can’t save her.

After serving the king’s tea, Court Lady Oh waits until she is called upon to speak in order to say: “It was I who tried to poison the crown prince.” Oh no. Oh no! She goes on to give adequate reasons, like the loss of her child (which previous episodes hinted at being Queen Sinmyeongsunseong’s doing), though King Taejo would rather pretend she said nothing.

She lays out the bloody clothes of an infant as she tells him that someone in the royal family sent her tea to drink while she was pregnant ten years ago. Seven days later, her baby died, his baby died, and she’s not about to let the same person who poisoned her get away with killing a girl who’s like a daughter to her.

King Taejo tells her that Su isn’t a replacement for her dead child, and that there’s no evidence against Queen Sinmyeongsunseong. “Will you look the other way this time as well?” Court Lady Oh asks him tearfully. “I will die soon,” she adds, putting a name to the illness that’s been plaguing her: cancer of the stomach.

She knows that King Taejo is acting to save the crown prince, but requests that he help her save Su, so that she won’t lose another child to the evil queen. His eyes wet with unshed tears, Taejo asks if this means she’s finally casting him aside, and a tear snakes down Court Lady Oh’s cheek in answer.

The next morning, So runs to the execution platform, where a bloody and bedraggled Su is being taken to the noose. Her eyes widen in fear as she wonders if this is the end for her, but she only begins to panic when she doesn’t see Wook.

As she looks around for him, it’s not Wook who arrives, but So. He fights his way through the guards, announcing to them that he’ll be taking her with him. He’s willing to spill blood their blood if he must.

But then, Astronomer Choi runs to the execution grounds with a royal command in his hand: There won’t be a hanging, as the real culprit has been discovered. Su promptly faints.

Court Lady Oh walks with dignity to the soldiers ready to take her away, taking one last look around the palace. Su witnesses her assenting to her own punishment and limps over to her, demanding to know what’s going on. “I put the poison in the crown prince’s tea,” the court lady replies.

Su knows she’s lying, but Court Lady Oh has to keep up the pretense in order to save her. So holds off the guards long enough for Su to drag Court Lady Oh into the secret tunnel beneath the baths, only to come up against the newly blocked exit.

Despair washes over Su as she takes this in, and she takes it upon herself to pull at the rocks blocking their exit. “You said we should go to your hometown,” she says, her voice distant. “Let’s go now.” Oof, this is hard to watch. Even Court Lady Oh sheds a tear as Su tries in vain to clear the way.

Court Lady Oh pulls her away, but Su cries—she knows that this is only a cover-up, and Oh will die in her place. She turns back to the exit, but Oh pulls the crying girl into an embrace. “It’s not your fault. I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing this for the king.”

She strokes the girl’s back as she says that she would die soon anyway, so there’s no need for Su to feel burdened. “I’m fine,” Court Lady Oh says through her tears. As she looks down at the scar on Su’s wrist, she mirrors what Su once said about having no regrets for protecting what she needed to protect.

Su sobs piteously as Court Lady Oh again takes her into her arms. She doesn’t say this aloud, but she repeats the advice she’s been giving to Su all this time, because she doesn’t want Su to end up like her.

We find Su in a fresh set of clothes as she limps her way to the king’s quarters. She kneels in front of the steps to make a formal protest for him to allow Court Lady Oh to live, despite her voice being too weak to carry far.

Wook tries to run to her aid only to be stopped by his mother, who refuses to let her son risk his life. Princess Yeonhwa reminds him that he turned his back on Su once, so why can’t he do it again? Wook sends his sister a look: “How much more indebted to me do you want to become?”

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong comes over to gloat and challenge Wook—if he doesn’t believe Court Lady Oh is the culprit, does he believe her to be guilty? His mother immediately prostrates herself at the evil queen’s feet, begging for her to leave her children alone.

Wook tries to pull his mother to her feet, but she brushes him off to continue her heartfelt plea. Queen Sinmyeongsunseong remains arrogant, admonishing Queen Sinjeong for raising her son poorly as said son remains powerless to defend his own mother.

Su’s pleas grow quieter as she grows weaker, even though she continues into the night. By now it’s just a whisper, and she has to struggle to keep from falling over. Baek-ah tries to tell her that her pleas are futile, and that despite everyone knowing that Court Lady Oh is innocent, no one would dare stand up to the king.

He reminds her that Court Lady Oh just barely managed to save her, and if she keeps being stubborn, Oh’s efforts will be for naught. “It is better than doing nothing,” Su replies, causing Baek-ah to give up on trying to stop her. But before he leaves, she asks where Wook is. Ouch.

The next morning, Queen Sinjeong asks the king to rescind the order for Court Lady Oh’s execution. He refuses, and when Astronomer Choi says that Su has been outside protesting for two days, King Taejo announces that if anyone takes her side, they’ll have to answer to him.

It begins to rain, and poor Jung has to be held back by his other brothers from going out to Su with an umbrella. Jung, finally having enough, leaves the safety of the eave to kneel in solidarity with Su. Baek-ah joins him, as does the crown prince (though he stands). Ninth prince Won refuses to have any part of it.

Wook finally approaches Su in the pouring rain, and this look of hope spreads across her features that’s just heartbreaking. But when he stops and begins to back away, realization seems to set in. As he turns away from her, Su can only ask, “Why?”

Just when it seems all hope is lost, a figure emerges next to her and spreads his cloak to cover her. It’s So, who says nothing as Su straightens just enough to remain under the meager protection.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong takes a moment to taunt Court Lady Oh, who’s on her way to the gallows. She says that Oh dying first means she’s lost, but Oh says the queen has never once beaten her. The evil queen makes sure to have the last word, as she says that Oh is nothing but a lowly court lady who no one will remember after her death.

“If one person remembers me,” Court Lady Oh thinks to herself, “that is enough for me.” In the king’s courtyard, the princes and Su hear the gong signifying the execution. What they don’t see is the support drop out from under Court Lady Oh’s feet as she strangles on the end of the noose before going still.

The king suddenly loses his footing, which is likely all the emotion we’ll see from him regarding her death. In the courtyard, So tries to comfort Su as she screams for Court Lady Oh.

“If I had known someone would die because of me, I would not have been so greedy to live again. If only this was a dream… if only I could wake up without remembering any of this,” we hear Su say in voiceover as she faints in So’s arms.

COMMENTS

I knew that the show would have to work hard to drive a believable rift between Wook and Su, but I was honestly surprised at how well they managed to pull that off this episode. Everything seemed dialed to eleven today, and to great effect—this is definitely the best effort we’ve seen from this show, and it’d be hard to pinpoint just one reason why. It’s one of those situations where everything finally just seemed to work, enough to where those little inconsistencies ceased to matter, and we could just focus on the emotional impact of what we were seeing.

Wook’s turn to the dark side was really unfortunate, if only because it wouldn’t have happened were it not for Princess Yeonhwa’s meddling and manipulation. I thought she’d resolved to become more than just the sister of a king, but now it seems like she’s thrown her entire weight behind the idea of making Wook king. And at the cost she’s made him pay, she better have been truthful about everything she said—it was her own ambition for power that caused her to implicate Su in the first place, and while her words to Wook about doing it all for him didn’t ring untrue, it made her seem much more selfless than she actually was. The “I did what I did for you” could’ve made sense had she not conspired with Queen Sinmyeongsunseong in the first place, especially knowing that the evil queen has always had it out for her family.

At least Yeonhwa seemed to realize her mistake when she saw her own mother prostrate herself in front of the queen, but by then, it was too little, too late. It helps to know that Wook disdains his sister for her actions even if he had no choice but to fall into her trap—which is why I can’t hate him for it. Yeonhwa really did make it so that he had to choose between his own family or Su, and for someone as upright as Wook, it would have been unreasonable to expect that he could throw the lives of his mother and sister away, even for the woman he loves.

I actually felt like the show handled his transition much better than expected, because it would’ve been too easy for him to just go wholesale bad. But he knew enough to feel guilty for his inaction, and tried his best to still be of some help to Su, even if it meant helping her from the shadows. Him walking toward her only to literally turn his back on her toward the end was a little heavy-handed, admittedly, but it was the kind of closure Su needed for the question that had been undoubtedly plaguing her throughout the episode’s events: Where was the savior she was promised?

The fact that her savior came in the form of Court Lady Oh was even more unexpected, but fitting. And when that thread really got going, it was absolutely heartbreaking. Court Lady Oh had been one of the deeper characters presented to us, and her constant watchfulness over Su had already clued us into the depth of feeling she had for the girl. We knew that she looked at Su as a younger version of herself, but the parallels between taking her on as a daughter to replace the child she’d lost—to the evil queen’s machinations, no less—were solid enough for her sacrifice to ring as both believable and extremely, extremely sad.

Her sacrifice didn’t come off as a deus ex machina to save Su from the gallows, but as more of a natural progression of their relationship, made easier to bear by Court Lady Oh’s terminal illness. I doubt that she needed Wook to ask her for her to have done what she did, and even if it was a teensy bit hard to buy that Su and her could just run off together, the moment they had in the cave was worth the suspension of disbelief required to get them there. Giving them that last chance to say their goodbyes was hard to watch, but along with making Court Lady Oh into one of the best characters ever, it went a long way toward endearing Su as a character. She still doesn’t have any agency, but at least she’s still willing to try despite being powerless.

While I did think it was a bit of a letdown to miss out on Su’s inner thoughts during her torture and even directly afterward, I guess we could say that she was counting on Wook to rescue her until the end, which is why she didn’t show fear until she realized that he wasn’t coming to save the day. Still, it was jarring to see how well she handled being cruelly tortured and imprisoned, but that’s neither here nor there anymore.

Despite whatever Wook was trying to do in the background, it was really So who emerged as Su’s defender, and that almost reckless abandon for his own status and future was what sold his love for Su to me. I’d been on the fence about their relationship before, which wasn’t helped by So’s emotional immaturity, but seeing him throw caution to the wind to save Su—or at least die trying—was powerful. It’s enough to make me think that even if Court Lady Oh hadn’t stepped in, So’s efforts might’ve just been enough to save Su. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking. I can’t tell if Su is just that lucky, or just that unlucky anymore.

So doesn't have anything to hold him back from saving Soo in this moment. He doesn't have the responsibility for supporting his family, his relationship with his mother is only blood-related. At this time I'd say he cares more of Soo than the throne.

Wook, on the other hand, has his family counting on him, and he will risk getting them thrown out from the palace by saving Soo. Plus he loves his mother, and he will definitely go for the throne to lift out his mother's status. That's why he has to turn his back on Soo.

Hope this is the answer you're asking for.

This episode, Lady Oh is the HaeSu's real hero. In the first 4 episodes, it was her (motherly) cousin. Now, its (motherly) Lady Oh.

I cried to sleep. Sobs.

So's fierce protectiveness over her is just; whoa to his comitment. He says that he wont just drink poison for some girl; now explain the sword fighting and the Batman scenes, Wang So. He says that she's his person, he protects his person. Really direct, no wishy washy wait for me i'll save you speech.

Nicky wore a purple robe underneath the cloak, so it did look like a seperate cape.

Wang So was dressed black from head to toe, and his cloak was black too, so it made him look like Batman.

No matter what anyone else says, I can't hate Yeonhwa. Yes, her machinations led to all the tragedy today but can you blame her when her entire life has been a series of trials trying to survive in the palace? It's been alluded enough that her family has been kicked out of the palace before and suffered cold and poverty in her youth and she has the perfect motivation on why she would want power - so she and her family can survive without fear. From her perspective, Wook becoming a king is not just about her becoming powerful, it ensures that her safety.
It's a shame that Queen Sinjeon outsmarted her this time but I like that we have a lot of independent, self-motivated female characters here who know what they want and are active in securing it.

And Wook. I understand why people are upset with him, especially from Su's POV, and how he's failed her multiple times after all those promises, and I guess that's what splits him from So, who pulls through in action and not in words, and in the end gets the girl. It's so tragic that it's not out of volition or change of mind that makes Wook fail Su each time but his family and the responsibilities that come with it. It makes Wook a realistic character vs. So, who is much more dramatic and ideal for us to view in a drama. I mean, in the end, how many of us can choose a girl over our family, especially when the said family has been through so many hardships and moments of danger since you were young?

It's definitely game over for Wook-Su ship because Su has seen that Wook can't and won't save her in the times of need, but this event I think will push Wook to fight for the throne, not just because of his sister who practically forced his hand, not just because of his mother who had to kneel to someone who was behind all this, but also because he's gonna realize he needs the power to keep his people, including Su. What's unfortunate is the same event has made Su feel that she's no longer part of his people, so this is all futile. :(

I'm with you on all those points. Yeonhwa is classist and ambitious, but she also lives in the constant fear that her and her mother's lives will be put into jeopardy once more, and this more than anything is her motivation to act. She seems to be hedging her bets by both eyeing the position of first wife to the future king - whoever that may be (at this point So seems to her the most eligible candidate) - or at the very least being the sister of the future king. I think she acts out of desperation when she outs Wook to Queen SMS, and when she simultaneously tries to poison the Crown Prince. But guess we all learn that she is still a beginner at machinations, compared to the queen.

I don't think Wook has gone over to the "Dark Side". But he does give up when he finds himself trapped. In peaceful times he is a gentle person, but in tough times he is partial to his family, and unable to protect anyone else. So on the other hand is constantly living in tough times - and he both manages to protect his family as well as those he loves. In this respect I think that while Wook had no choice but to protect his family, had his character been more like So's, he might have found a way to do both. He is held back by too many things, half of them self-imposed.

Though So is not as gentle and caring or people-savvy as some of his palace-raised siblings, he does what he can within the lines, not by playing by the rules.
Su's life in the palace is probably going to get way tougher very soon. When you go into survival mode, you stick with the people who have best proven that they are willing and capable of protecting you, even when their fierceness appeared beast-like in more peaceful times.

Such a great episode, and so much character development for almost everyone who appeared in it! So happy I stuck with this so far!

I absolutely agree with you! Lots of character development (which I personally love) in this episode and I can't wait for what's in store for us next week. Wook's transition was very interesting to me because you're right, he's basically trapped by Yeon-hwa's machinations as well as his familial obligations as the Head of the Family. This is the point of no return and Wook has chosen to 'sacrifice' his love for Soo in order to claim the throne.

I've been waiting for this moment since the very beginning and now I'm so glad they made Wook such a nice guy at the start of the drama because the transition from 'I never wanted to be king' to wanting the throne in order to keep his family and Soo safe is all the more powerful.

Wook is thinking that he can help her and be with her by becoming king. But by then, it will be too late. Su will be with So.

0

By then, it's probably too late. Soo looks so heartbroken in next episode's preview that I don't think Wook can ever regain that same hold he has on her since the very beginning. Soo has been starting to notice So more and more with each episode because of his relentless pursuit of her. And that final scene... wow. With Wook turning his back on her and So becoming her 'pillar' of support, what a way to end a 10-episode long relationship lol.

0

It made me sad to see when Wook walked away from Su. She was so sad to see him walk off. Poor Su, luckily So came to her side.

Then there was Lady Oh, I cried so hard at scene where Su was trying to run off with her and the scene with her death. Her death scene hit my feels.

Oh, Wook. Dear, beloved, cowardly Wook. I can't even be angry at him on Su's behalf, because he has had his hands thoroughly bound by his sister's machinations and his own family loyalty.
But So has no such restraints. True, he drank the poison himself instead of outing his mother because of some inexplicable love (or desperate desire for it) and faint vestiges of hope that she might still accept him. But he still threw himself in front of the bus to save Su, and it is that single willingness to sacrifice everything for Su that provides such a great contrast to Wook.
Speaking of sacrifice, this episode was full of parallels that got me in the gut.
Lady Oh's confession to take Su's place had me bawling for a good part of the episode, and I was completely absorbed in her scenes: the quiet resolve, the gentle steel in her voice as she reprimanded Wook, and her dignity even as she died, knowing it was to save Su.
King Taejo's willingness to sacrifice Su for the Crown Prince was understandable but made me think he was rather powerless himself (like Wook, perhaps?) Baek Ah and Jung's (even the Crown Prince's) willingness to risk the King's wrath as they knelt with Su was a lovely way to show just how deeply Su has touched all their lives even though we viewers might not have really seen it because of the directing/editing/writing.
Also, Wook's mother's scene where she knelt before the other queen really made an impression as well. All the pride that comes with her station was completely discarded, and despite what we've seen of her gentle character and fondness for Su before, she was so fiercely terrified for her children that she knelt before the other queen and that was the ultimate act of humbling herself, because of her maternal love for her children. I'm glad Yeon Hwa looked horrified in that scene, because that was an indirect consequence of her actions and her selling her soul to the devil.

Thanks very much, HeadsNo2, for another great recap!

I'm so thoroughly heartbroken over Lady Oh's death!! She was a favorite character of mine in this drama...what a lovely and wonderful character portrayal! The actress is a stunner!!

I hope to see a faster progression of So's and Hae Su's love relationship---be closer...more closer please! They sizzle when together...sigh...So's expressions when he looks at Hae Su...sigh...

The chemistry between Su and Wook was evident during the first episodes---sweet and cute at times, but I feel that it "pales" in comparison to her and So's sizzling chemistry! Even the "quiet" moments between them are wonderful...

They just "fit" one another! Jun Ki is a-m-a-z-i-n-g as So and IU portrays Hae Su very nicely---despite her "tendency" to slightly overdo the "wide eyed stunned look". She was most convincing in her torment and pain over Lady Oh's sacrifice. My heart was shredded during their scene in the cave and her anguish over her death!

Thank you for the recap, Heads!

I teared up for Lady Oh. She was a beautiful and courageous woman. She was a mother to Su to put down her own life to save the latter. Queen SMS should learn from her!!

I also was worried about how they were going to end Su's feelings for Wook. But the story handled it so well. There were compelling situations and reasons provided. I commend So for standing by his woman no matter what. The preview shows his thoughts on marrying her even if she is demoted. That's love when you want to be with someone regardless of the negative consequences it can cause in your own life. It's enough to forgive his immaturity from ep 9. I loved the scene when So visited Su in the jail. Their conversation and expressions were so good!!

Wook's transition to dark side was explained well too, with him being unable to forsake his mother and sister.

Please no one say IU can't act after today's episode!

I cannot wait for the next episode!! I want more!!

I have been thinking about that since last night. if all episodes are as great as this episodes, i am sure this will be an epic drama. i can really feel that there are so much potential in this drama but was hidden by the editing, and maybe because sbs decision to air only 20 episodes. if sbs allow it to air at least 30 episodes, i am sur they can edit the scenes better.

With the overwhelming love and support the drama is receiving from international audience, it sure does geared more to suit the taste of international viewers.

I am happy that the drama is getting us hooked as the episodes progressed instead of losing its steams like most other dramas.

I really feel bad for Hae Su, seriously and really thought she should have just run away with Lady Oh and open that skincare clinic in Lady Oh's hometown. Alas, that did not happen.

But hot damn three types of holy shit, Yeon-hwa. That's it. I'm not even mad you pulled out those tricks. Hae Su can get Wang So for all I care, but you and the throne? That's the only ship I'm keeping my eye on.

Watching her and Queen Sinmyungsunseong fighting for the throne is like watching Margaery Tyrell and Cersei Lannister. The men ... Step up your game or just sit back and let the ladies do the work.

I find that nearly most of the men were a bit emotional. The women, ruthless and they gotta do what they gotta do to survive.

But I just got a question for Hae Su, like you never heard of Game of Thrones while you were in the 21st century? I mean, it's pretty popular and and everyone knows that you don't trust people who have ties to the throne - even if they don't watch it.

She's like the Sansa of the bunch. Not even an Arya, and she was like Arya, she doesn't need Wang So or Wook to come and rescue her.

It's actually a shame that Soo is not as clever as we'd want her to be; if she just remembered her history or watched a lot of sageuks at least, she'd be able to outmaneuver Queen Obviously Evil. But then we'd be seeing a very different drama. It's still a shame, though.

Well, I'm still thankful the show gave us Yeon-hwa to counter Queen Sinmyungsunseong. Sure, Yeon-hwa is capable of committing 'evil' tactics, but she still has some compassion within her, even though it does seemed like it stems from selfish desires.

This separates her from Queen Sinmyungsunseong.

Just imagine an alliance between Yeon-hwa and So could bring to the queen. Mother's disappointment becoming her ultimate downfall. The smirks of 'we won' on their faces as the coronation as Queen Sinmyungsunseong looks on in horror.

I like this show because the women love the people around them and one another so much that they can sacrifice what is precious to them in order to make room for other women. And, not just noble sacrifices, but really just pragmatic life decisions. Yay, no cat fights. Even the scheming by the women are due to real stakes up for grabs like power and lives of loved ones.

Yes! Aside from being a bit rude to Soo, YH hasn't been just plain catty bc of her jealousy. All the ladies fight for something precious to them, not just because "I don't like her" or "the guy I like likes her". It's a breath of fresh air for K-Dramas.

Well done, Show. Let's hope next week's episodes are even better.

Wow, I've seen many a ship sunk but watching the Wook/Su ship go down was like seeing someone pull a Hindenberg on the Titanic. I think the show made it very believable since Wook could never turn his back on his family so character wise it made sense. Wook isn't dumb but he did have the naive belief that happy ever after doesn't cost you anything. A palace is a place of blood and tears (props to Empress Ki) so something like real love could never be obtained for free or without cost. I'm somewhat disappointed that Wook didn't already know that.

But that is aok because So doesn't give a rip about any of that. Be it his life or his chance at the throne, he was willing to put it all on the line. May the So/Su ship never sink

Su's broken expression upon seeing that she had been betrayed again just hit me right in the feels. Girl keeps losing mother figures. I think I'm gonna really end up hating Wook for interfering with So/Su more then his cowardly behavior this episode. Don't hate on So just because he has more guts then you, Wookie.

With a sister like Yeonhwa, Wook doesn't need enemies. She's just about as wicked as Queen S and just about as clever. She's keeping all her options open:pushing Wook toward the throne by making what he wants fro himself forever out of his reach, not burning any bridges with 3rd prince and doing her small part to keep So from death. She's covering her bases-evil shrew she is.

Lady Oh is officially the coolest court lady ever.

Thanks for the recap Heads! What an awesome episode.

Oof, what a painful way for Su to finally realise the cruel reality of the world she now lives in. I think I mentioned in last episode's recap that Su doesn't really seem to truly understand the stakes at hand--the only time she was ever close to mortal danger it was that almost-wedding with Taejo, and even then she didn't die because of her clan--and today she was forced to learn via the hardest way. Court Lady Oh's death has pulled the curtains open on a new act of the story, and Su is pretty much changed for good now. Not only did her mentor sacrifice herself to protect her, but Su's lover, the one guy she was so insistent that would never, ever change and love her forever? Yeah Wook abandoned her. Court Lady Oh was right on that.

I found Court Lady Oh's sacrifice particularly moving not just because of her selflessness, but also because it drove home a major point--that the men of the palace in this world are not above killing someone they love if it helps to consolidate their power. It's the fate of a king, so to speak, and Court Lady Oh, while willing to do it for her love, is Su's future. This is the price for possessing the love of a king, and while it is the most piteous fate ever, how it plays out is what makes the show so irresistable. I need to know how it all goes down in the end.

Duuuude, Yeon-hwa is good. She is good. Even though she's so easy to hate (because she's so open about her ambition and her willingness to stoop to underhanded methods if they'll get her what she wants) I can't help but slow clap at how stunning her ploy to force Wook's hand was. That scene with the imperial physician? Totally loved how she was all "tattle on me and you're dead" lol. At least she's clear about it. Her astuteness is amazing in an eeeeevil way but you gotta love it, and I loved how sharp her words to Wook were, how she could see the ambition in his eyes and heart and how she was able to use his passiveness to prod him into action. Yeon-hwa may have done the plotting, but if Wook wasn't so passive and wishy-washy, could she have had the chance to do so? She knew what made her brother tick, and took her chance when she got it. Wook's passiveness is his downfall, because seriously so many things could have been avoided if he'd just done something--so while his ambition may be lit aflame now, I don't think that's a good combination for someone tussling for the throne. But man, so impressed with Yeon-hwa's machinations this episode. A class, and we could have used more of this in the earlier episodes.

The classic scene in the rain! It was nice to see it appear here, captured in a different style. But lol all I could think about was that So needed to hold more of his cloak above Su's head, because it still looked like she was getting rained upon haha. Also: Chae-ryung reappears, so we know another subplot is underway. Really interested in her relationship with Won, though Won is mean. And evil.

Still heartbroken over Court Lady Oh, because all good people in this show have to die early I guess, but I really appreciated that she went out on her own terms. She went to the gallows knowing that she was saving Su's life, that she had Taejo's love till the end, and that no matter how smirky she is now, Queen Sinmyeongsunseong will never have the satisfaction of having one-upped her, ever. It was the same sort of agency that Su was given during her forced wedding with Taejo, and I feel like everytime the show pulls something off like this it makes me somehow cancel out the bad stuff in my head, like weird music editing or Su's character development the past few episodes. MLSHR is just this weird mash of good/bad/really good, and I can't wean myself off it so whatever. Looking forward to the next episode!

(Also are they seriously going to be messing with Taejo's death in history because seriously. Seriously.)

Ditto. Agree wholeheartedly.

I was struck when Lady Oh remarked (bitterly) that their desire for the throne made the men in the palace cowards.

So true, and you have to wonder what will happen to So when he gets swept up in the grab for power as well. What is it going to cost him and must he pay the same price that his father had to pay?

As you say, this is irresistible and will keep me hanging on till the (hopefully not bitter) end.

I feel that even though I trust in So's character enough to believe that his love for Su is genuine and almost-permanent, he has to make these tough choices when he becomes king. There's more to a king's life than just the woman he loves alone, and when push comes to shove, will he make the same decision that his father has? It's just endlessly fascinating, that kings aren't made of the same stock as us common people are in the sense that they are sometimes forced to the decisions that we would never make in our own lifetimes, ever.

I know I am ahead of this drama, but I cannot help feeling anxious when So becomes King. We can see what Taejo did to 'save' the country, by executing his lover, and as a viewer, I understand his action. He cannot choose love because many people's lives at stakes (what will happen to the country if the throne falls to greedy or incompetent ruler), so he had to and always going to make hard decision. I can see Wang So will become that way too. No matter how much he loves Hae Soo, the country and common people will always comes first and that scares me, because he might have to sacrifice Hae Soo...unless the drama ends with Hae Soo dies before Wang So ascends the throne, which is a lot better than seeing Hae Soo having her heart being torn into pieces after he become a king.

Funny thing is, how much anxious, or furious and worried I am about their story, and I know what I am getting into (still preparing my heart for incoming tragedy), I still want to watch this drama till the end. Why? I too should run away before things get ugly, but I cant ;P

0

What gives me hope is that King Taejo is like every other king in our moms' period dramas/ sagueks; nation before self, duty to country before personal desires.

Having crafted such a complex character in Wang So, I fervently hope the writers find an ingenious way to veer So off this well-trodden path of self-sacrifice. Even better than his deep and constant love for Su, I would love to see So utilise his smarts and cunning to outwit and maneuver his way so that BOTH girl and throne are his.

Let's see how it pans out.

Yea it's too romance focus for the historical figures to be flesh out or have more than they need. Just mentioning his name will suffice I guess because it's already passed the halfway mark.

If this project was given to a skillful sageuk writer, we'd have the best of both world.
I enjoyed the original because it was 50/50 romance/history. I got to know each characters historical background without reading up on the history beforehand.

0

I agree. Yeon Hwa is good. She hit the nail on the head with Wook. She knew exactly what his weakness was and that enabled her to manipulate him however she wants. Yeon Hwa is definitely a well-written character. You hate her but you can't help but to admire her intelligence.

The final scene between Wook and Su was tragic, you could almost see it through her eyes as though all the promises he had made and all the warnings Lady Oh had given her came flashing back to her. In that moment, it felt like she was utterly crushed by Wook.

In a moment she was helpless, So stood by her. He became her pillar of support and that was all she needed. What a turn of events, a man she thought would love her and would never change turned his back on her where as a man she thought to be a monster was with her until the end of the line.

Oh man. Riveting. A sobbing mess now.

1) For once, LJK didn't carry the show. So, so satisfying to see the dramatic tension and pathos spread out and balanced among the heavier weight actors of the show. The scenes with the strongest emotional punch involved the king (what a great actor Jo Minki is) - his pleading with Crown Prince not to give up, and how they had fought together...oof. And the suppressed longing and emotions in the dialogue with Lady Oh (*gah*). When he called her by name, I couldn't stop bawling.

2) The parallel between the king - Lady Oh and So-Su storylines is interesting. It's a cautionary tale, a what-could-be, if So and Su make certain choices that could rewrite their fates. The king obviously chose ambition over love, and Lady Oh chose love over pride to stay with the man she loved, yet neither were really happy with what they had become. What do So and Su need to do to avoid ending up like them? Or is Show foreshadowing that this is EXACTLY what they will become?

3) It has been a long time coming, but Su finally sees that Wook IS changeable. I can't say I'm sorry to see him change. On the positive side, he finally gets something else to do rather than being a lovesick passive puppy. Can't wait to see him turn antagonistic.

3) I like Yeonhwa. That is all.

I wish the show wasn't so heavy-handed with the direction; yes, we get it, Wook is turning away from Su while Soo is stepping up and being all heroic. Pacing issues still abound; the developments in this episode could, I think, have been spread out to let the plot points play out and emotional beats resonate better. But I'd take this episode any day over what we got in the first quarter of the show.

Love reading your musings!

Re: #2 - I think that is exactly how it is going to be: a parallel, history will repeat itself in the new generation. We already know this is a tragic (love) story, so I don't see how else it would go.

But, that makes me sad, still. The previews say that Wang So asks to marry Hae Su; and that might work since he's just a prince (not the king), so Hae Su's scar isn't a problem. But, we know he's going to marry Yeon Hwa (who does care for him). I mean, how do you get to that place when Wang So is so in love with Hae Su now? What awful things need to happen to push the characters towards the history they're headed towards. It makes me anxious and sad.

Enjoy your analysis too! You always bring up great insights.

Without benefit of knowing the source material, I see a scenario where Wang So might have to marry Yeonhwa in order to either 1) save Su's life or 2) secure his path to the throne SO THAT Su's survival would be secure.

Given the man that he is, I don't think anything less than a threat to the life of his beloved Su, would force him to enter into an alliance with YH. At this point, Su is the most important thing in his life, more important than even his family or his own life.

Doesn't mean marriage to YH will be an easy decision for So, but at least we can look forward to some delicious angst-ing from our favorite actor :D

Dunno if this is wishful thinking, but I came across a comment somewhere that said this version of the story will take a different twist compared to the original. Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for a happy ending for So-Su.

@Lin_KOH?! Where is that comment! I must see it!

I just resigned myself to a tragic ending, like the c-version, and hoped that they would have a little reincarnation scene in South Korea where our two leads meet each other again (like the c-version). Like, I could see Wang So become Gwangjong, then Su dies, Wang So gets filled with morose and builds all those Buddhist temples (like in history), and with his dying breath he says he'll find Hae Su again....cut to modern day South Korea, and reincarnated Wang So and Ha Jin meet again.

But, I'd be MORE than happy with a happy ending in Goryeo times.

By God, there's the emotional connection with Su I was looking for.

Makes me want to ask that it be taken back though. Poor girl can't catch a break at all :(

Thanks, HeadsNo2, for another illuminating recap!

Yeonhwa and Queen Yoo are now competing to out-Medici Caterina de' Medici.

At the mention of So's training to develop resistance to poison, I wracked my brain to recall where I'd seen that before. Two dramas came to mind, and both are set in various eras of history in Goryeo.

In LAND OF THE WIND, POWs are used to test poison. A few of the human guinea pigs develop surprising tolerance before encountering their fatal dose.

The other gambit isn't exactly developing resistance to poison, but it's closely related: Using a stronger poison to overcome a weaker one, while avoiding killing the patient. That one's in FAITH, when there is no specific antidote to the poison Doc Eun-soo has been jabbed with. Revving up her system through exposure to a particularly nasty combination of poisons succeeds in overcoming the initial toxin as well.

Now that I think about it, Queen Yoo's poison delivery method (applying it to the cup, not the tea) was also used in FAITH. Eun-soo writes on paper impregnated with poison that gradually builds up in her system before it begins to take effect. Transdermal delivery of an invisible compound with no smell or taste. Diabolical.

We now return to our regularly scheduled mayhem...

I don't think so because the Wang-so's in her vision is the future. He is going to be brutal when it comes to his rivals. I'm not sure if she'd be able to handle his methods of execution.

I cried so bad when Lady Oh died, IU did such a fab job today, I was really with her character. And omg the rain scene, it gives me so much BBJX feels TT___TT

I'm so glad the Wook Soo ship is finally over, So/Soo officially has started!

Just how the episode killed me last night, your recap brought me to life just to kill me again... ugh! Thanks for the wonderful recap!

This episode sunk WookSoo ship, with me inside it. This is really heartbreaking to watch, especially with Soo looking at Wook from afar and expecting him to come to her aid. But no, the guy just stood there. I genuinely like Wook since day 1 but this scene ended my love for him as a character. Given with his circumstances, I kinda understand where he is coming from, but man, I'm a little bit disappointed. He is one of the few characters in the series I expect to come up with a brilliant solution to the problem since he is more of a thinker and careful person. Oh well, I was already dead in the ship.

On the other hand, can I commend how genius Queen IDontKnowHowToSpellHerName? Watching her doing her evil schemes to get the throne was like watching a Korean version of Cersei from Game of Thrones. I really like her as a villain.

(Thank God for five-day breather. I really need to breathe after that emotional episode.)

This is just my conjecture so I'm not sure if things will actually pan out the way they will but spoilers nonetheless.

It looks like Wook and Yo are teaming up and I'm assuming they're both using each other. This will probably take place after Taejo's death... Yo is obviously planning some kind of coupe to overthrow the Crown Prince and take the throne. (Remember that scene in episode 10 where Queen Yoo said that Yo is meeting with someone high up and that preparations are almost complete? Uh oh.).

Anyway, unfortunately for Yo, So has already promised his loyalties to Moo so that might be the reason why Wook and So are clashing swords. So is probably the first line of defense against Yo (and Wook) but Crown Prince, Baek Ah, and General Park will soon arrive later.

There is CP and Yo standing between So and the throne. According to Haesoo's premonition, Taejo will die on his deathbed (probably due to Woo Hee's stabbing), CP died from drowning and Yo....I couldn't figure out how cause the vision seemed to point that he was stabbed and his eyes just popping out of shocked.
I hope we will get to see more So as Gwangjong.

To send our beloved Court Lady Oh off with my amateurish poem:

oh, lady oh

she was a vision in white
like a lamb to the slaughter
but she put up a fierce fight
to protect her surrogate daughter

never getting to hold her unborn
she stays for her heart
slowly torn to shreds and worn
sorrowfully she parts
giving up on the king
and his endless hunger for the throne
and his endless playthings

her sleeves billowed gently in the breeze
the evil queen's words rolled off with ease
lightly she struggled against the noose
but heavily her memory weighs
is it the fate of all good women
to suffer and leave early?

Agree with this episode was gold....Court Lady Oh what a powerful performance . The best line for the whole series so far and super profound "Why is it that all royal family men turn into cowards when its about the throne"....sad and true. I kept thinking all these amazing princes with talents and the best education money could buy and everytime theres a change in throne they kill each other, lie , cheat, manipulate...so much for family and all their values are out the window. Wook is trapped into protecting his family but I didn't like the way he handled all this.... hasn't 4th prince always been trapped too? Yet he found a way to still protect what he cares about. If Wook was going to turn away from Su in the rain why even show up?
This is the second time Su has been left behind after falling in love and it makes you wonder if she wouldn't just turn bitter about giving her whole heart again....and then there stands 4th prince covering her in the rain and fighting for her with everything, and asking her to give her heart to him....what is a girl to do? ......

I'm not feeling right when people keep saying Wook has many things to protect while So only has so little (Soo & Baek Ah). It irks me cause I remember what he had done even when he already had a sick wife (and even after she died).

On another note, Wook's never the always-sweet-gentleman to me. In earlier eps, the way he treated So really made me skeptical about him. He gave the feeling that he didn't really see So as an equal human being, as almost everybody he seemed to think So is really less worthy than other princes and deserved his fate.
Hmm sorry maybe I'm pro-So, but since then I couldn't bring myself to like Wook. Surely I have to admit his character is very well-written, more than any 2nd male leads I have ever seen.

I agree. Idc how sweet talking and swoony he is (haha sorry Kang Haneul), idk why more people don't find it so odd how he was basically pining for love from Soo while still married. Even when his wife was still alive he was making promises to Soo like, that doesn't irk anyone? If he was acting like that in the 21st Century women would be hanging him up by his neckties.

I was honestly impressed with the Queen's plotting. I mean, she's always 10 steps ahead of everyone. Her plan A is for the CP to die, that didn't happen. Plan B for So to die, that didn't happen as well. Plan C (don't know whether there is one), Lady Oh died. However it goes, someone died and that someone was a person that she wanted them to die. So no matter how it went, it's a win-win for her. I was just amazed and baffled at the same time.
And I think she sort of gave that scheming skills to YeonHwa, as she also able to really manipulate Wook. I thought her plan was to just get Su killed, but it was more than that.

I love that there's no Eun, but I think now my problem lies with the placement of Eun. I mean, it supposed to be during this time, where his supposed 'first love' is going to die that he shows up. Not during those puppet thing, or playing thing, or whatever. I think I would have dislike Eun a little bit less if the writers just set him right and not just put solo scene without reason.

And I love how the transition from Wook to SO took place. I wrote on last episode that Soo herself have that worry of Wook betraying her and it ended up happening here. And I think next week episode, we will see more of how Wook breaking it off with her, officially.

I can't wait for next week episodes. Like SO asked Soo to marry him and quite adamant on it too in the face of Wook and others. I'm wondering how Soo will go after this. I have compared all the previews, episodes, to the extended 7 min trailer, and there is only 2 scenes that are not published. One is Soo in opulent chamber (so royal chamber perhaps?), and the other is Soo standing with nice get up with hair half up, half down (similar to how YeonHwa dresses). So this two scenes kind of got me thinking whether she'll be a noble once again and if she will, how? Because I'm not sure whether SoSoo marriage will actually took place. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it.

Honestly the less we see of Eun, the better. I don't need Baekhyun's pouting, overacting mug in this episode, which is the best we've had in the entire drama.

Finally... After having endured 10 episodes I can finally say: excellent episode today!

BTW.. A little trivia for you guys: the famous, memorable cloak scene was actually an adlib; completely improvised by Nicky Wu (4th Prince in the original drama). The beautiful scene of 4th shielding the rain for her with his cloak was neither written in the original novel nor in the script of the original drama. Nice to see the classic scene represented in the K-version :).

In the original version, 8th and his allies (9th, 10th, 14th etc.) formed a conspiration to frame 4th Prince that he was spreading "false rumors" concerning the Crown Prince. 4th Prince closest brother, aka Ruoxi's bestie 13th Prince took the blame for him and was exiled/imprisoned by the Emperor for 10+ years without anybody near him. So Ruoxi begged the Emperor to let Lu-wu (a gisaeng; 13th's love) stay beside him in company. Emperor refused, so Ruoxi kneeled for two days in the rain to plead for 13th. Initially nobody wanted to get "directly" involved because that would make the Emperor suspicious. But of course 4th Prince couldn't leave her like that, and pretty much the same happens as in the K-version. Except, in the original version, 4th Prince deliberately threw his umbrella away before walking towards her in the heavy rain, indicating that he was ready to suffer with her together and that she was not on her own. He then uses his cloak to shield the rain for her while he himself is draining in the rain. Afterwards, 8th Prince and 14th Prince came by to drop her some food (She already broke up with 8th way before in the original version. There is a two year gap between her relationship with 8th and her relationship with 4th.)

Then we also get to see a seperate scene of the other princes (3, 8, 9, 10, 14 etc.) kneel in the rain to beg for mercy and to plead for 13th outside the Emperor's pavillion, which Ruoxi describes as "ironic" afterwards because they were the ones who planned this conspiracy in the first place, but were also the ones who kneeled in the rain one whole night for the sake of 13th.

I watched the half of the c-version because I was really curious as to why people keep meantioning about it. But Seriously..., though both versions shares same elements because of course they both based from the same book but really you can consider them to be different. There's really no point comparing.

No offense but k-version is far superior than the c-version esp when come to quality, cinematography, acting performance-wise, even the 10th prince here.. at least in k-version he's only childish unlike in the c-version whom you can almost pass like an idiot. Even IU's performance is actually better than c-counterpart. By saying that, I understand that both characters have different characteristics and both actresses performed their part accordingly. Much less if we talk abouth the 4th prince. This character is well-created and well-executed in the k-version. The delivery of Wang So is far superior than the c-version.

To be fair the the c-version, it probably has its own appeal but really there is no point comparing them.

I am sorry if I make the c-version fans upset but these are what I think.

They keep killing the really good characters! This is so Game of Thrones... in a good way.

This is the episode that made me REALLY like the show. Before, it was just a curiosity. Now that the stakes are much higher, I'm suddenly invested.

While I'm neither Team So or Team Wook, I've often felt the need to defend Wook on the Internet (futile, I know, but I can't help it).

I don't think Wook is weak. He's just been placed in a position that his choices are limited. He has a family to protect. And while Yeon Hwa is an evil queen in the making, I can't help but admire her tenacity and commitment.

So doesn't really have anything to lose except for Baek Ah and So (who he's trying to save). I do like the fact that he's willing to put his life on the line for hers.

TL;DR This is my first comment for Moon Lovers, and I don't think Wook is that much of a jerk.

Looks like ep11 had no difference from the international and Korean version from what I read here. I also agree the Princes royal wear look so elaborate compared to the Joseon era royal clothes. The Goryeo Princes garbs were literally mythical creatures sawn on. Quite lovely but I cannot imagine if those needed to be hand sewn.

How many more episodes are left? Was this series cleared to have 20 or 24episodes?

I do agree that Wook is not really a coward for choosing his family. He was placed between a rock and a hard place. Either way he would have lost something dear to him.

What annoys me about his character though is that he is always making these promises to Soo, yet he has never been able to follow through on them. Case in point: getting her out of the palace, protecting her from the hanging. It's like mate, if you can't follow through on your promises, then don't make them in the first place. He's been living with the rules and dynamics of the palace for years. Surely he knows by now that there are limits as to his power and pull. What's wrong with making sure he can actually follow through on those promises before he gets Soo's hopes up. It's cruel.

On a slightly lighter note: does anyone think of the evil queens name and just laugh? Every time i read it I just think myingmyongsingsong. I can't help it :P

I don't think it is all historically accurate. I'm sure no one got on the throne by being a dumb jock. But i do think history books as such short change the wives who were pivotal in many decisions that changed the fate of nations.

But yes! dramas tend to move to the other extreme and have the women doing all the manipulation. We rarely see men doing it. GOT has some of the best-est male manipulators and plotters I have seen in fiction
