Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 10

Our heroine now has two suitors with two completely different approaches vying for her affections, and with restrictions aplenty, hers doesn’t seem the most enviable position to be in. Despite everyone having something to say in the matter, ultimately the choice is up to Su, even if that means she’ll have to find a way to make her voice heard if she hopes to change her present, much less the future.

EPISODE 10 RECAP

After his “You are mine” speech, So goes in for the kiss, and Su struggles weakly against him. Then, she goes still as a tear runs down her cheek. Only then does So pull away, his eyes intent on her face, her shaking hands.

He stumbles backward, regret over his actions seeping in. Su continues to cry silently until So grabs her by the wrist and pulls her after him. Next thing we see is fourteenth prince Jung spotting the two leaving the palace on horseback.

Jung reports what he saw to Wook, who’s in disbelief that Su would have left the palace in the first place—and with So, for that matter. He loses his temper at the fact that she, a court lady, left the palace, though Jung says that So wouldn’t have been concerned about breaking that most sacred of rules. If anyone’s going to pay, it’ll be Su.

That’s what Jung is worried about the most, and he won’t accept Wook’s order for him to just stay in the palace. He wants to help Wook look for Su, since he knows what would happen to her if she gets caught. Wook apologizes for still thinking of Jung as a child, and accepts his offer to help.

We find the two escapees looking out at the sunrise on horseback, and their conversation can only be heard in voiceover as Su notes that neither of them will be safe now. “Then should we run away?” So’s voice replies. “If you want to, I will.”

On their feet now, So explains that he had been wanting to bring her here. She looks up at him as he offers a small smile in return, but her gaze returns to the rolling waves. He asks her if she still wants him to leave the palace, claiming that he’s never brought misfortune or used his sword without caring for the costs.

Only now does Su try to convince herself that the visions she saw of So as King Gwangjong must have been a hallucination, and even if they weren’t, she should still try to stop him. When she speaks, she gives him platitudes about living life with a smile (and without spilling blood) no matter where he ends up living.

So says she needs to just say the word and he’ll run away with her, but Su insists that as a court lady, she can’t leave the palace. But the real reason is much more complicated: “I have feelings for another.” So: “Baek-ah?” Hah. Okay, he really is clueless.

When she says it isn’t, So says it’s fine as long as it’s not Baek-ah. Because he’d have to kill whoever it is she does have feelings for, and he likes Baek-ah. “You already belonged to me the day Yeonhwa was beating you and I called you mine,” he adds. “You saw me for who I was. There was no need for explanations or excuses.”

As far as her being afraid of him, he says he doesn’t believe it. “You are the only one on my side. Therefore, I am not sorry for anything. Not for kissing you, or for bringing you out here.” He adds that he won’t be sorry even if he makes threats against her for having feelings for another man, and hands her a hairpin.

Su shakes her head as she looks down at the gift, insisting that she’d only meant to help him, and that she never intended for him to have feelings for her. “Try running away from me then,” he says with a smile. Putting the hairpin in her hands, he tells her she can throw it away if she so chooses.

Wook and Jung see them on the road and promptly dismount, with Su worrying that her absence from the palace has already been noted. Wook looks positively livid as So makes it so that Jung can’t escort Su off the horse. He’ll be the one to return her to the palace.

At least Wook has enough sense to tell him that people will start to talk if they return to the palace together, but So counters that the king already gave Su to him. “Gave her to you?” Wook repeats the words, clearly not liking the taste of them in his mouth.

But then Su inexplicably says that she’ll go back to the palace with So, leaving Wook and Jung with no other options. I wonder if it’s because So would have to take the responsibility of removing her from the palace rather than the two other princes, but it’s hard to be sure.

Wook makes So promise that nothing will happen to Su on his watch before he lets them set off. “This is the last time I’ll send her away like this,” Wook tells Jung, a dangerous look in his eyes.

So brings Su back to a waiting Court Lady Oh, and immediately takes the blame for removing Su from the palace. Once he leaves, Court Lady Oh blames Su’s small act of kindness as the reason why So’s feelings have gotten out of control, and the only advice she has is for Su to wait for So’s feelings to subside.

Third prince Yo imparts some tips on archery to Wook, who keeps missing the mark. Yo claims that he always imagines a person as the target, and in this case, he’s clearly imagining So as he hits the target time and again. While Wook claims to take the higher road, he keeps missing, and Yo tsks at what he perceives as weakness.

Yo knows that the king is sending him away from the palace to die, but he’s resolved that he’ll come back safe and sound. He plants the seed of doubt in Wook’s mind as to who he should be targeting in the meantime—and Wook, seemingly filled with new resolve, draws his bow and fires. It’s a bullseye.

Su and Wook meet again in the not-so-secret cave beneath the baths, where she tries to explain that she only chose to return with So to be sure that Wook wouldn’t get in trouble. “I am not angry,” Wook assures her. “I am just disappointed.” Oof, that’s always worse.

Wook claims that he was always too busy worrying about the consequences of taking her out of Damiwon, yet while he was agonizing, So took the action that he couldn’t. Now, he says that he’ll request the king’s permission to marry her.

Her eyes widen at this, and Wook explains that he almost lost her to the king—he won’t make the mistake of losing her again. Su was the one who brought joy and laughter back into his life, and because of that, he’s willing to leave the palace to live the rest of his days with her, and give her all the love he never gave Lady Hae.

“Therefore, Su… will you be my wife?” Su’s instantly flooded with conflicting thoughts, as she tells herself that he won’t ever change, nor will he ever hurt her. (Is she using So as a point of comparison?) She would be happy with him. But if Gwangjong were to kill him…

Wook doesn’t get to hear any of this inner monologue, so he’s left to wonder if she no longer wants to be with him. Su says that isn’t so, prompting Wook to ask for an answer: “Will you marry me?”

Before she can answer, Court Lady Oh intervenes to take the two to task for their secret meeting. If word were to get out, Su would be killed, and Wook would be stripped of his rank and punished. Why do I get the feeling that she’s pro-So?

Once they’re alone, Court Lady Oh asks Su to leave the palace with her while she recuperates from her illness. In reality, she’s known about Su and Wook, and wants to remove Su from what she sees as a dangerous situation.

Su disagrees, saying that Wook asked her to marry him, and she wants to say yes. Court Lady Oh’s disapproval couldn’t be any more clear as she mentions that it simply wouldn’t work with So in play—the two brothers would be at each other’s throats, and she’d be in danger.

Again, Su disagrees. She trusts Wook, and knows he’s not the type to change. At this, Court Lady Oh loses her cool as she says that the palace has a way of changing people, and it’s a place where promises mean nothing. Only now does she tell her that the man she once gave her heart to is now the king of Goryeo, and though they were once lovers, the throne was more important to him.

And she, wanting to stay by his side, resolved to live as his court lady. But tears form in her eyes as she tells Su that while she once addressed the king as her lover, now she’s in charge of bathing the women who will actually be his lovers.

Regardless, Su says that she knows she can trust Wook—as long as he has no ambition for the throne, they can be happy. Court Lady Oh can only sigh, having failed to convince her.

After a night spent brooding over the hairpin So gave her, Su finds So waiting outside her quarters. He’s done a less than admirable job covering his scar, so Su invites him inside in order to help. In voiceover, she says that she’s not afraid of him, nor does she hate him. She just worries about him.

As she applies the makeup over his scar, Su tries explaining that there are different types of affection. Naturally, someone feels affection for another who helps them through a difficult time, but they’d be more inclined to call that person a friend. What she worries about, she claims, is that So might be confusing friendly affection for love.

So takes her hand as he tells her that he doesn’t differentiate between friendship and love—it’s all the same to him. He knows that she’s trying to push him away, but her tactics won’t work on him. As he says this, he grabs her around the waist, pulls her close, and begins to lean in for a kiss…

But Su quickly covers her mouth with her hand. Amused, he tells her not to worry, since he won’t try kissing her without her permission again. Thank goodness for small favors.

Jung finds Su on the palace grounds and explains that he was worried about Su when she went off with So, but she says they only went to see the sunrise. It was fun, even.

She tells him to try thinking of things from his brother’s perspective, since he was never able to receive their mother’s love. Jung just says that his mother and Yo have changed since So came into the palace, and sighs wistfully for the uncomplicated nature of the past. The days that Su spent her days smiling at Wook were their happiest, he claims, and Su agrees.

Wook meets with his mother and Princess Yeonhwa to announce his plans to request the king’s permission to marry Su. He doesn’t want the throne and wishes to live with Su in the Northern city of Hwangju. He may as well have slapped Yeonhwa in the face with the way she reacts, with her spitting that he’d just be leaving her and their mother without protection.

Surprisingly, Queen Sinjeong intervenes to give Wook her permission to follow his heart, though she warns him to be prepared. Once he leaves, Yeonhwa tears into her mother for not stopping him, even though the queen reasons that she’s tired of vying for the throne, and knows that Wook must be too.

Without Wook’s protection as king, Yeonhwa says, they’ll just be pushed out of the palace, or worse. That’s when Yeonhwa declares that she no longer intends to just live as the sister of a king—she’ll become the wife of one, and rule over him.

Queen Sinjeong is powerless to stop her as she goes straight to Queen Sinmyeongsunseong with a “story” to share. We don’t get to hear what it is, but this alliance is probably the last thing anyone needed.

Baek-ah’s heard a new dancer has arrived at the gibang, and goes to see the new girl for himself… only to recognize Woo-hee, the sword dancer from the forest. She grows suspicious when she recognizes him, though he claims he just comes to the gibang to play accompaniment for the gisaeng there.

She’s content to just shoo him away, but Baek-ah says that they should share names now that they’ve met three times. She claims her name is Bok-soon, but her attempt at secrecy is foiled when one of the other gisaeng immediately calls out, “Woo-hee-ya!” Hah.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong and ninth prince Won meet with minister Park Young-gyu in order to ask his advice on how to separate the king from So. Minister Park says that they’ll have to make the king believe that So is Crown Prince Mu’s enemy, so all the queen needs to do is act like she supports So—he’ll handle the rest.

Won then claims he stole one of the crown prince’s secret documents and gave it to So, that way the crown prince will think So stole it. The queen believes all their preparations are going swimmingly.

Baek-ah pays a visit to So to ask him if it’s true that he took Su out of the palace—and if so, he wants to know what his half-brother is thinking. Since Su is a court lady, there could be severe ramifications for her if she’s caught, and Baek-ah doesn’t want So making things any harder on her.

So says that wasn’t his intention, and confesses that he’s not all that good at relating with others. But he has no intention of making things difficult for her, and when he says that, Baek-ah realizes that his feelings for Su are real. So claps a hand on Baek-ah’s shoulder as he says that he and Su are the only people he truly cares about.

They’re interrupted by Astronomer Choi bearing bad news for Crown Prince Mu—his mother’s family has been accused of embezzling tax money, so the ministers are calling for him to be deposed. The ministers instead want So to be installed as the new crown prince, since he’s been the nation’s hero after the rain ritual.

Ninth prince Won plays his part in the plot by claiming that all of this happened because he told So about the dealings of Mu’s unscrupulous uncle, making it seem as though So was the one who made that letter public. He acts completely innocent, leaving Crown Prince Mu to suspect So.

Seeking to nip this problem in the bud, King Taejo informs So that he’ll be sent back to Shinju. Despite the king knowing that Queen Sinmyeongsunseong’s machinations are the reason that So’s name has been put in for the crown prince position, the only viable solution the king can think of is to send So away.

Princess Yeonhwa, in disguise, orders a court lady to deliver a vial of what’s probably poison to a very specific court lady. (Su, perhaps?) Though Yeonhwa warns the woman not to speak a word of this to Queen Sinmyeongsunseong, it seems the court lady does just that.

So bursts into his mother’s room then to demand answers, though his mother only demurs, claiming that she was just trying to help him get the throne. Isn’t that what he said he wanted?

He tells her to stop pretending like she does anything for his sake, but his mother just smiles at him as she tells him that the crown prince will die from drinking poisoned tea on the ninth day of the ninth month—she’s already delivered the poison, so he can’t stop it now.

So begs to differ, but his mother practically laughs. Even if he tells someone that she delivered the poison, she’ll just claim she did it to make her son king.

“Try to stop it if you can,” she challenges. “But you’ll only be tightening the noose around your own neck.” She manages to stop him when she mentions how the king is trying to drive him out, but if the crown prince dies from poison, So will take his place. One measly court lady will die, and he’ll have everything he wants.

Understandably, So is wary of trusting her, though not wary enough. She bats her eyes at him and claims that she fully supports him and trusts him not to kill his brothers. Dramatic music tells us he’s considering her proposition. No, So! Don’t trust that witch!

Minister Park Young-gyu is called to the gibang to meet with Woo-hee, who pressures him about a rebellion. As the last princess of Baekje (one of the Three Kingdoms, which King Taejo unified into Goryeo), she wants to kill the king, and she threatens to tell the people of Baekje of his treachery should he fail to help her.

He reveals that he’s her uncle by marriage, and all but dares her to make him bend to her will. What power does she have? Woo-hee threatens him with her silver dagger, but when they spot Baek-ah nearby, she acts like a gisaeng fighting off a suitor trying to have his way with her. Her uncle plays along and stalks off.

Baek-ah seems to recognize the minister, but before he can connect the dots, he rushes over to ask Woo-hee if she’s okay. Bitterly, she says that if he was going to see what was happening and not rush in to save her, then he should’ve stuck with that choice. He says it didn’t look like she needed his help and dangles the norigae ornament she dropped in front of her, teasing that it doesn’t seem like she wants it back.

After Wook pays a visit to his late wife’s grave to ask her to watch over him and Su, he joins the royal family in an afternoon of games and general merriment (which so happens to take place on the ninth day of the ninth month). So focuses intently on the crown prince every time he seems about to drink.

The family plays a drinking game based around who can recite stanzas from a famous poem by Zhong Hui, and they motion to the next person who must drink and recite the next part of the poem. But when it’s Jung’s turn, he can’t remember it. Hah.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong notices that Crown Prince Mu is reluctant to take a drink, which opens an opportunity for the poisoned tea to be delivered instead. The one part of the plan So wasn’t let in on, though, was that Su was to be the doomed court lady delivering the poisoned tea.

Tenth prince Eun and his new wife Soon-deok are late to the party, and end up running into Su as she’s on her way to deliver the tea. Eun’s a bit icy to Su, claiming that he doesn’t want to see her face if he can avoid it. After he storms off, Soon-deok asks Su why she didn’t just take her offer to become Eun’s second wife.

Su admires Soon-deok’s consideration for her husband, and bids her to take care of her husband. Soon-deok gets a little offended at Su’s specific advice, claiming that Eun is her responsibility now.

The tea Su brings to the crown prince is first tested for poison by a silver spoon, but before it arrives, So loses his nerve and prepares to tell the crown prince everything. But once he sees Su and realizes the predicament she’s in, he goes silent.

When he speaks again, he covers smoothly by saying that he’d like for his brother to pour three drinks for him. Princess Yeonhwa looks nervous as the clueless Su takes the tea to So, who then drops the cup. He claims he was just being clumsy, so Su is asked to pour him another, this time in a fresh (and hopefully poison-free) cup.

So drinks the first cup without incident, though he begins to falter before he can drink the second. He covers again, continuing his toast to the prince as he downs the second cup. As Su pours him a third, So sends a look to his decidedly unapologetic mother as he thinks, “It wasn’t the cup, but the tea you poisoned.”

She practically shrugs, leaving So to bear his pain in silence as he takes the third cup from Su and realizes that he’s drinking poison she poured for him. His hand shakes as he takes it, but his toast doesn’t falter. He looks at Su as he brings the cup to his lips, while Princess Yeonhwa looks ready to jump out of her seat.

Because of So’s toasts, the crown prince requests that the king not send him away to Shinju as planned. Su, still clueless, goes to prepare more tea, while So looks after her longingly and tries to control his shaking.

So excuses himself gracefully, but the world around him begins to blur as he starts walking away. All he can do is try to control the symptoms long enough to get out of sight, even as blood trickles from his clenched lips.

COMMENTS

Now that’s a noble sacrifice. I admit to being pretty disappointed in So for going along with his mother’s plan on any level, because he should know better by now than to trust her. And for a while there, it seemed like he really did know better, so the only reason I can think of for him to have let himself be fooled was that he truly does desire the throne.

What confuses me is how openly awful Queen Sinmyeongsunseong gets to be without any repercussions whatsoever. I’m honestly surprised that there’s a soul in the palace who isn’t aware of her machinations, which she may as well be announcing from the top of the palace roof, for all the subtlety involved. And yet, even with her explanations, her true motivations aren’t clear—specifically, with what she hoped to accomplish by letting So know about the poisoning. It was clear to us that she was manipulating him yet again, but to what end? I wouldn’t buy that she counted on So drinking the poison himself, but then again, I don’t buy a whole lot when it comes to her.

It’s at least worth noting that So might’ve stopped the poisoning himself by implicating his mother, though he had no choice but to switch tactics when Su arrived. He’s not entirely free of guilt since he tacitly agreed to the poisoning at first, but seeing the way he literally poisoned himself to save the woman he now loves helped erase any lingering feelings of doubt. The fact that he realized the irony in drinking the poison she poured him was doubly sad, because his sacrifice was twofold—and neither party he was saving had any idea that they were even being saved.

Maybe it’s just me being morbid at heart, but So’s sacrifice on Su’s behalf seemed a much more romantic gesture than his unapologetic steamrolling over her feelings from the start of the episode. Even though I do get the steamrolling to a degree, and understand that he’s just not adept at expressing his feelings. He wants so badly to have Su all to himself that he’s missing the essential aspects of actually wooing her, and thinks that if he can possess her, then the only person who’s ever shown him any real affection will stay by his side and continue to support him.

He has a certain amount of self-awareness to know that he’s not the best at being social, but that self-awareness only gets him so far. Although it was funny how clueless he was when Su told him that she liked someone else—enough to think that it was Baek-ah—it’s not so funny when he follows that question up with a threat to kill whoever it is that she likes. And, as he added, to deliberately not be sorry about saying that.

Su’s reactions would be in keeping with a woman who was actually from that time period, but this episode more than ever had me wondering where all of Su’s modern sensibilities went. Even if we take into account that she’s been living in Goryeo for a while and has grown accustomed to life there, her being a time traveler had absolutely zero impact on her actions this episode. It’s not even that I’d like her being from the future to play a bigger role, but it’d be helpful if she spoke up for herself once in a while. Telling So that she liked someone else was a step in the right direction, but then saying nothing to his threats to kill said person felt like we took three steps back. If she’s not afraid of him anymore, what’s preventing her from speaking in her own defense? Or from speaking much at all? I feel like we actually still know just as much about Su as we did starting out, which isn’t that much at all. Here’s hoping that our modern girl will find her voice sooner rather than later.

That scene between Prince So and his mom was riveting. His micro expressions and her bada** attitude were everything.

This drama is so much more interesting when it's going into So's mommy issues and set them up as the most twisted adversaries ever.

Forget Wook, Queen Mommy Dearest is the real deal when it comes to epic fights for So. Especially since it has to be entirely done by outmanoeuvring her and can't be settled with a physical fight.

plus he can't bring himself to actually harm his mother or his brothers (while HS is afraid that he is going to mercilessly slaughter them, oh! the irony)

she on the other hand wouldn't mind if he was dead and out of her plans.

I didn't think he was convinced (semi or otherwise) to go along with his mother's plan - I thought he felt like she had tied him up so tightly he couldn't make a different move.

Her threat to say she did it for him would mean that she and all her clan would die, so he would probably die, too, even though he would be the person who exposed the plot. 'Going along' would buy him time to think, but even if that wasn't it, I can't hold it against him to be worried about his own neck.

Then, his inner sense of rightousness and duty led him to make a confession knowing full well what would happen, but Su came in and he saw that his exposure of the plot would also condemn HER to death, and that he could not accept.

He thought quickly and broke the cup, believing that would take care of it - which would have been the better first choice, but sometimes in the heat of the moment we are inspired to genius. It didn't occur to me before that.

The only flaw in his quick reaction was that the poison was in the tea, and he understood that pretty quickly, but kept going. To do otherwise would condemn Su.

For me, noble and honorable behavior all the way around.

Same, I couldn't figure it out. I thought he was going to break all the cups, but that might be too dramatic. Then I thought maybe he was trying to make a total of 4 cups instead of 3, as the pot might hold a total of 4 cups-worth and he wanted to finish the tea than risk Moo having even one. And, of course, that he didn't realize it wasn't the cup that was poisoned, but the tea.

Forget dropping the cups, he should've yelled something along the lines of "ERMAGHERD SPIDER!" and tacked Su right to the ground. Which would hopefully break everything except Su's bones.

there 2 options
a) the poison is the kind that doesn't have reaction with silver
b) the tester is bribed by the queen or the princess to pass the test

Another option - the spoon wasn't silver.

0

Or we're in the Matrix. There is no spoon.

0

Do not try and bend the spoon, that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth...there is no spoon.

Ok, got it, Maxtrix or not, there really was no spoon, as it looked more like a screwdriver to me. lol

Yes, I also saw it as him being forced to go along until he could find a way to prevent it that didn't result in him and his family dead - because it wouldn't just be mom that would get the axe.. And it doesn't really matter that EVERYONE knows who is the real culprit. It only matters what can be proved. So if the Queen said, no, he did it and changed his mind - then they would probably have to accept that as the truth.

I was actually crying during his speech as he drank the poison, because I really do think it was heartfelt. It was a testament that he was willing to die for both/either his brother and Soo, that he would protect them.

Poor So. He wants to protect everyone.

Felt the same way. I love the scenes of So vs. Queen SeenmySanitylately, and I love them more when So comes out the winner from them.

As much as I hate Evil Queen Mommy though, her entire attitude, aura, pose in that scene just screamed out BAMF to me. Lol...she knows she's got the upper hand and she was loving it. I don't enjoy her being so one note ("Yo must be King! So sucks! Jung's my baby!") but I get a sort of satisfaction in seeing her luxuriate in all her schemes and plots because it will make her eventual downfall so much sweeter.

I want her to fall even harder now, given what she did to Lady Oh..she probably poisoned her to get her to miscarry and Lady Oh is still suffering to this day. Then she used that to drive Queen Hwangbo and her children from the palace. Kills two birds with one stone, why so clever evil queen?

Of her sons, I think So actually takes after her the most which is definitely both good and bad. Don't go to the Dark Side, So!!

I am loving just about everything in this show, too, except for one thing: IU's acting is so appallingly bad. I am so, so tired of her blank, round-eyed stares, her completely immobile face, the lack of any inflection in her voice...what do these guys see in her? She has not only lost her modern sensibilities, she also seems to have lost her humor and what little wits she had.

thank you! I thought it was just me (or perhaps just IU) but I really am struggling to like So. I believe she's using most, if not all, of the princes and is fully aware of how Su, Wook and Eun feel about her and playing with them. It irritating the crap out of me with each episode.

Regarding IU's acting ability - or lack thereof - the all too often close ups don't help in any way either. It just goes to illuminate the same face, same stare, same dead expression she uses all throughout the show.

Hi Headsno2 ! Thanks for the fast recap ! Just want to clarify that the pin So gave to Soo is not the same pin he was about to give to his mother :D .

The omma pin was buried along the pile of praying stones (shown in the preview but not in the actual broadcast ).

Notice the previous pin is more of a butterfly design. What Soo gave to So is more of a floral design. ^^

Damn, I'm only on episode 5 and there's so much discussion from the last few episodes! How can I keep up? Time for a marathon!

Anyways, unpopular opinion here but am I the only one who actually likes Eun? I can see why he might be annoying to some, but I actually like how his personality is rather bright compared to the other princes. This is my first saeguk, so I don't know what makes one, but I prefer having a balance of lighthearted and heavy moments in my drama and he brings plenty of it along with Jung. Just my two cents!

I was literally flying high watching episode 10. Could it be, an episode without Eun and his annoying whines? But alas, he had to pop up at about 3/4ths of the episode. To be honest though, I was pretty vicious toward the other princes too, stop stealing airtime from Wang So!!! But I have to say that I can tolerate Baek-Ah's Wang So-less scenes now, since Wang So likes him the best.

I love Eun and his scenes in both this episode and the last were stellar. I really enjoyed the Eun/Su angst, because it was such a contrast to their relationship before, and I think these scenes in particular were written and acted well. This episode was especially great in showing us how deeply Eun was affected by Su, that he seemed completely unlike himself and you could see his expression changing from happiness to longing to heartbreak when he saw her and remembered again that he could no longer be with her and that she'd never loved him. I like them in general, but IU and Baekhyun have surprisingly great chemistry. Now that they're not so campy, and there's so much unsaid, I'm really looking forward to their scenes.

Here here @Zoe. I know we're in the minority, but I haven't minded Eun for the last few episodes either. Its a mix of his screen time being down to manageable levels, and also the fact that to my untrained eyes, Baekhyun's actually improving in his acting?

I too could see the emotions flickering through his eyes when he saw Hae Su and how sad he was when she didn't react to him as she always did..when he told her to turn away and never show her face to him again, and she simply and dutifully complied I must admit I wanted to hug them both a little bit because their friendship really was cute and light and a perfect representation of most of the the first part of Su's life in Goryeo.

The only one she still acts the same with with now..as far as we've seen..is Jung. I want more Su-Baek Ah scenes..I need to know that friendship hasn't gone topsy turvy too!

I agree with everything y'all said. And I do agree that Baekhyun's acting has been improving ever so slightly with approximately each ep--approximately since they didn't exactly film the episodes in chronological order so Baekhyun's acting flunctuates a bit but does move in a positive direction a little if you look at the overall result.

Thanks HeadsNo2!!

The kiss scene... I liked So's response to Su's displeasure.. he stopped and didn't get angry, but running away to the beach... felt weird, but I guess that is how out of sorts So felt. The conversation they had was truthful and right. I wished more emotion from So though. The close ups on So and Su were just too much this episode. Finally too much.

The beach and return to the palace scenes squashed the wishful scenario of So and Su coming together sooner rather than later. I had hoped by now the affection would have been less one sided, but obviously not. I still feel the amazing chemistry between Wook and Su. The emotions on Kang Haneul's face.. keep blowing me away. His promise to not let Su go again.. wowzers!

Just when the story gets going, pivot to the 10th Prince and his wife and me yelling at my TV screen, WHY WHY WHY WHY???!! Needless, useless, boring waste of screen time. Please move past Baekhyun already. Pls I beg..

Wook and Hae Soo's conversation.. Wook is sincere in his feelings and intentions, which just endears him even more. I don't want to see Wook turn. He really likes Hae Soo and she is comfortable with him and trusts him. They may just like who they are and how they feel when in each other's company. Not really love but infatuation. Still the heat from both cannot be denied.

I was proud of Wook for letting his Mother know his plans, but stupid to let his greedy sister know as well.

Su trying to explain to So that what he was feeling isn't love but friendship was as So pointed out, Su pushing him away. So displays again how keenly he understands Su.. except for her love for Wook. He still doesn't know?

So getting hurt again. By his Father and dear Brother. The people he has shown nothing but loyalty to.. ready to discard him like trash.. his mother's words do ring a little true now. I liked that So stood up to his father stating even against his feelings the king would send him back? The king only concerned with the crown Prince's happiness and future. So is to be exiled again through no fault of his own.

The drinking scenes were my favorite part of this episode. I loved LJK's acting, breaking my heart over and over again. Watching So struggle and drink the poison knowing his mother in the end was willing to let him die while he tried to save the Crown Prince and Su. He told his truth while essentially dying in front of his family. Everyone except for Baek ah who think badly of him and in front of the girl he loves and may never get to see again. The looks he gives Su while drinking the poison. hurt.. really hurt to watch. Can you blame a guy for maybe going crazy after all this?

I hope episode 11 moves fast and has more action. Less wasted time like the 10th Prince scenes.

but i could kick soo and crown prince's respective butts! couldn't they see what was going on in front of them? it's not like wang so and his mother were eyeing each other subtly! stop the man drinking his poison quietly, dammit. have you no hearts?!

Soo cannot do anything, she's a court lady. She would be whipped (not that it's not going to happen anyway). Crown Prince's scared, because he was in the verge of losing his position. I mean look at the way he reacted to a lot of the scene that had been happening, like when Eun ask for So's unmasked face. Mu just stay silent and then blasted Eun and Yo after. If he is a stronger character he would blasted Eun that time and then. So it is predictable for him not to do anything. Plus he's probably engrossed in paying attention to the king's reaction on So's toast. So is the only worthy ally in the palace for him so for the king to be impressed by So was a big deal for him (egotistically).

I have a respond on Soo being the modern girl. In the first episode it's was clear that Soo is an unconfrontional girl when it comes to relationship. She is very outspoken when it wasn't anything related to love, but when that variable got injected, she was suddenly a deer in the headlight. In a way, her reaction although irksome it is also predictable.

Wook, oh Wook. Karma boy, karma. Sorry, eventhough Wook had been a gentleman through and through, he was "cheating" on her wife, and to always talk about Soo in front of Lady Hae. What assurance can he give if a younger more cheerful girl come when Hae Soo is in Lady Hae's shoe? From the little scene we had of Lady Hae's youth, she was similar to Hae Soo. Wook was also always one step behind. In a world of political cutthroat, he didn't claim his way faster enough. For a lack of better word, he's too safe. If I were him and my eye candy was surrounded by a bunch of other qualified prince and older too, I'll swoop her up asap without telling my own sister. Duh, he should know how ambitious YueHwa is.

Ah, I got cut off. So I agree with Puni about Wook and YeoHwa.

HeadsNo2 I agree with you. Prince So, you need to brush up on your wooing skills. Your action made us weak on our knees but your words, dude. Sheesh louise, such a contradiction. You were so good with talking to other guys yet to the girl of your dream you were a mess (ha! he is a mess). I'm laughing cuz he's playing that toddler game, "If he pull your hair, he likes you." or in this case if he threatened you he loves you. PFFT!! NOT WORKING DUDE!

There's a good reason why the king wants to toss him out, and Yo too. it's because of their mom. Can't blame the king for that. Blame mommy dearest who was amused on the possible death of her own son. Hey, lady, do you know what intentional parenting is?

And yes Shelly, they both so far had the best acting in the drama. BRAVO!

I have a theory, maybe the reason why So didn't even count the rest of the prince to be his competition except Baek ah is because Baek Ah is the only one he consider worthy due to their own relationship. And remember, YeonHwa and him might have a young romance once upon a time, so for Wook to say his sister and Hae Soo's off limits, So might misinterpret it as "Oh hell no you are not touching any of mine every again, you reject."

What do you guys think?

if anyone (wook included) tells so he can't have something (girls included), he'd be all "challenge accepted!"
actually he already is. once he's not obsessing over his scar, he's a go-getter. considering how people (still) treat him as if he was the expendable one, i don't wonder why he'd turn into a kill-now-talk-later emperor. so far he thinks he loves soo (who showed him kindness when he was all alone) and he's friends with baek-ah (who seems to hero-worship him for some reason, not that i blame him), and those are the only people he's actually civil to and are civil to him back (except for when soo is hysterically calling him a killer for something still in the future).

upon the 20est or so replay of the drinking poison scene, i'm seeing mu's expression differently, it's almost like he knows there's poison somewhere, and he knows what so is about, but he's still bitter about the perceived thread from so and he's actually pushing him on to drink up. he's changing on the fly so fast, that mu. i guess his position is unenviable and his skin condition might be giving him the fear he won't be considered suitable, plus he was never popular (so became everyone's darling after the rain ritual.) maybe mu is jealous and ready to believe everything bad about so.

if that's the case, well dude, you fail hard at being a good CP and brother, letting your little brother take the fall when he's always been supportive so far. and btw, mu's star is wavering, i guess he's going to go soon anyway.

So's mom is the worst mother ever, even in kdramaland!

So only cares about Baek Ah. If BA is the one Su is in love with, So would have backed off coz he doesn't want to cause any harm to BA. At this point, BA is the only one he considers his brother and friend. If it's any one of his brothers, So wouldn't care and is ready to kill them for Su's affections. That's what I understood.

One of the reason I don't really like extreme close-up shots is because it makes it's hard to read subtitle while observing the actors' expression especially on the eyes part.

Because the different prince's clans are vying with each other to put their own crown prince on the throne. Yeon-hwa is probably the most practical character here. She said in a previous ep that she has two ways to survive: put her brother Wook on the throne or marry the future King (that's why she's playing both Yo and So).

Any other option (being sister to a non-crown prince, being married to a random prince) will lead to a weakening of her family's power. She'll become a lamb for slaughter once things get messy in the grab for the throne.

Her father once said that she would make a great king if she was born a man. She's got what it takes and the closest she would ever get to the throne is to become the (first) wife and future queen.
That'd ensure her protection and her family.

I wouldn't frown upon a girl who wants to survive in this brutal world ruled by men.

I keep reading statements like this and find them baffling. Not sure what I'm missing but, seriously, why is it so hard for people to accept that Wook and Soo genuinely love each other? It's not infatuation. It's not depicted that way. I really don't get the denial. In the same way, So genuinely, innocently, yet obsessively loves Soo. It's simple and it takes nothing away from either ship, whichever you're on. In fact, I think it will make the coming 'turn of fate' between these three that much more hard-hitting.

I agree with you. So and Soo are the main leads here and these two falling in love with each other was already expected even before this drama started. Even I couldn't believe myself that I learned to appreciate and love the relationship development between Wook and Soo though I knew they'll never end up together.

And now I'm ready to see and appreciate the development between So and Soo. Others might think I'm crazy. Maybe I am. But who can blame me if I just wanted to see "Love" in two different ways. No need to say So loves Soo more than Wook does or vice versa. We just need to be open-minded and try to understand their own ways of loving and the situations happening around them that lead them to certain actions and decisions.

Let's not hate Wook if we're #SoSoo shippers or hate So if we're #WookSoo shippers.

To be honest, i don't see much of a difference between WookSoo and SoSoo. From what i observed, Wook started taking interest in her when she kept assuring him not to worry because she can take care of herself. Wook has a lot of pressure on himself to keep his family safe. In fact he married Lady Hae to elevate their status and now that she's gone, they have little to no insurance. Hae Soo is probably the first person not coming to him with her problems so its like a relief for him. Its like he finally has someone to lean on. Which just seems similar to So falling for Hae Soo because she showed him kindness. Not to take away from their romance or anything because the chemistry is still there but the way he fell in love doesn't seem all that different.

Because Soo is one thing that they all want.

Wook : Someone that is true to herself.

Lady Hae : best friend that she would never had.

CP : A person that truly wants to help without any agenda.

Baek Ah : A friend that understand the loss of love.

Jung : a family that protected and respect him, not just for convenience.

Ji mong : A vehicle to keep the motor going (I'm sorry but he is jaded no matter how nice he is)

Lady Oh : A daughter she would never had that coincidentally experience what she did.

So : Well, you know that kid in school that always get bullied, and you stand up for them and they become obsessed in you. Yeah that's him.

She's just doing the right (or wrong considering the era) move to be the fave.

I had a different take on the poisoning scene, he was not going along with his mothers plan. He literally jumped every time the crown prince raised his cup, he was trying to figure out how to stop it and thought he had when he destroyed the cup that he thought was poisoned. His mother was correct when she said he couldn't just jump up and say my mom did it, if he did his whole family would be punished, his mom, jung and him. His mom played him because she knows he wouldn't want to hurt anyone. The king also knows of her plots, he just doesn't call her on it. He's already said I know Yo wants the throne and his mom tries to kill the prince. I'm sure for political reasons he doesn't punish her since her plans usually fail. I also don't think the queen was totally unaffected by So drinking the poison, her facial expressions are constantly changing during that scene, at first she is shocked, you can see a twinge of regret, I think she honestly didn't think he would drink it, but after each cup she knew his fate was sealed. I think thats a scene that must be watched and not read both Jun Ki and the actress who plays his mom was brilliant in conveying different emotions with just the face.

i think the queen's family is very important, or at least more important than the crown prince's family. so the king wouldn't want to stir them against the CP when there are already all those complaints of how he's not fit to be a CP (yo keeps insulting him at every chance.)

i don't think the queen was particularly affected by so taking the poison. more like counting the odds he'd fall in front of them and reveal he'd been poisoned with something that should've been taken by the CP. but on the long run, she doesn't need/want wang so anyway, and my bet is, by now she's counted her chickens and accepted that the CP escaped, but wang so will be soon gone, so it's a win-win anyway.

but the king, oh the king... no wonder wang so can't trust anyone. taejo gave so a finger and now he's pulling it back already, all because of appearances. does no one really love him? (except baek-ah, who seems to genuinely like him, til proven otherwise.)

I also want to add to that comment, the queen's family might be important because the king was appointed by several military general (or someone high in military rank), so most probably he climb up to the throne by marrying one of his ally's daughter. Getting rid of her would spell disaster for him.

Oh and Baek Ah, if the Korean version follow the novel and the Chinese version, Baek Ah will stay and become Wang So's trusted advisor/confidante until the end.

Taejo's queens are like switched around in this drama, it's kind of hard to remember who did what.
Taejo was already a highly respected commander and in a position of great power (king's right hand man) before he married his future queens.

Politics as usual. Political marriages benefit both parties. He gets their help and their loyalty and vice versa.
If he wasn't already powerful, I don't think Chungju's Chieftain, Lord Yoo would've given him his daughter or put their lives on the line to help him with his expedition.

0

I definitely think that So's mother belongs to a powerful clan as well. It's honestly the best and most logical reason as to why she's never been thoroughly punished for her misdeeds and plotting and why she can keep her position as the king's head wife. The details aren't obviously stated, but there's enough evidence to strongly suggest it.

After all, there's no way she could even legitimately fight to have one of her sons to be on the throne if she didn't belong to a strong clan. The way Yo publicly shamed Baek Ah clearly shows that his clan is in the position to look down upon others, and to add to that, we can see how Baek Ah is in no position to be considered for the throne because his mother belongs to a fallen kingdom. A king without the loyalty of a powerful clan is obviously in a poor position, which is why, illness aside, the Crown Prince is in such a precarious spot.

I agree! I never thought So went along with his mother's plan. It's just that her logic pretty much covered all the bases. We saw in the ep where the king finds out about the temple massacre that So just does not have a knack for politics (yet). Sometimes his thinking is very simple, and it broke my heart went his father said that being relentlessly abused in the palace will chip away his sincerity. In the poison tea scene, I think he was just trying to find a way to spoil the plan, and when Soo appeared with the tea, he went with his heart.
The director's gratuitous use of VERY CLOSE SHOTS can be awful, but it certainly highlights the acting. There are times when I don't catch certain details until the third or fourth watch (or if someone else mentions it first). In this case, I appreciate LJK and KH so so much more because of this. The little Korean that I pick up from watching dramas only get me so far. I watched this ep raw, and started tearing up when So paused before taking the second cup. I KNEW he was detecting the poison.

I thought that when So proposed the drinking game it was his attempt to save the Crown Prince. I also think he had a faint hope that his mother would do something to stop him from drinking the poisoned tea. I also think he was wondering a bit if Su was in on the poisoning since he kept looking at her, though maybe that was more about wondering if it was the last time he was going to see her.

I am confused why some of you are saying that by drinking the poisoned tea So was trying to save Su. A prince is a prince. Why would it matter if the tea poisons the Crown Prince or Prince So? Either way the serving girl is going to be executed for the crime.

I loved watching the close-ups of Lee Junki all through this episode. His face is so expressive. I love him in this role.

Yes, Lee Junki deserves all the close ups.

As for So drinking the tea to save Su, he was hoping to get out of there without anyone noticing him being poisoned, thus saving Su from censure. So as Heads pointed out, it was a double sacrifice on his part; protecting the crown prince and saving the woman he loved.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

This confused me too but I think it was as follows:

So was about to tell Mu about the poison.

But Su came in with the tea and he knew she would die if he told - she would be implicated in the plot.

Instead, he acted quickly by dropping the cup on the ground. This is because the Queen had said it was in the cup. Now the cup was destroyed, he thought, so neither Mu or Su were in danger.

He had already proposed the three toasts, however, so he went through with them. By the second cup, he knew the poison was in the teapot, not the cup, as it started to take effect.

Once he realized what was happening, the only thing he might be able to do to save Su was to finish the toasts and walk out of there before the poison began working and try some kind of cover-up before dying.

That's exactly what happened.

By continuing to drink that tea, he demonstrated his love for Soo and his loyalty to the Crown Prince. That moment was So at his best. It was so sad that neither Soo nor the Crown Prince truly understood his heart in that moment. It was heartbreaking to watch.

0

Evil queen never said it's in the cup. She merely said CP will drink the poison and a measly court lady will die.

0

Based on the translation in the version I watched she said the cup was poisoned.

0

Ugh my heart.

DAMNNNN.

And do I need to add that his acting was out of this world in this scene? This scene was undoubtedly Lee Jun Ki’s and Lee Jun Ki’s alone.

Also, special mention to how they filmed it in one long take and the skillful use of focus; it increased the impact of the scene and also made the audience feel a bit like Wang So, who was beginning to become slightly disoriented from the poison. The suspenseful bgm that always appears with the epic Wang So moments helped greatly to create the atmosphere too.

This scene is just so disconcerting in many ways. When the episode ends, one has to go and take a breather because the heaviness weighs greatly on the heart.

0

I agree with you

I re-watched that scene and drew similar conclusion as you, though the queen's expressions were a bit confusing to me at times. I looked at her and I thought I saw guilt, but then I wasn't quite sure if it was truly guilt or just her being taken aback that So decided to drink the poison himself. But then, she didn't seem particularly happy for the rest of the scene, aside from when So looked at her and she smiled.
I don't know... I think, during that particular moment, she merely acted the way she usually was to So to cover up that she was really concerned. I don't know just how much that concern was, but the sight of her son (no matter how much she dislikes him) consciously drinking three cups of poisoned tea which he thought put inside by her, ready to die, must've pulled at her heartstrings a little.

Where is the antidote.. I am assuming there is an antidote handy, cause the lead cant die in Ep 10...

I honestly think that his heavy handedness is in line with the times the show is set in ... Its goryeo and he is a prince ...

i don't really think much of the death threats because he seems to be uttering them all the time to everyone and doesn't actually do anything ... If he wants to kill, that will be the time he won't threaten and just do it

And i did like that it got through his brain that she was not receptive of being kissed ... like all of us were up in arms about the forced kiss .. but he realised that she was being forced after he saw her crying and clenching her fists. before that i think he was too desperate/shocked to notice her reluctance

But the last scene ... like you said - Gah!!!! .. the look he gave her when she was leaving, like its the last time he was ever going to see her and he just wanted to watch her ... gah! gah! gah!

The last scenes of this episode were so (I don't have a word to say; so) Gah!!! I loved how he was looking at her when he drank the last cup. And also when she was leaving. It's like he was fixating her face in his mind before dying. She was the last person he wanted to remember.

LJK acted amazingly to portray the effects of the poison. I don't know how he made the veins on his neck show.

Hahaha you might be right about the death threats that it has lost it's power to scare us coz ever since he met Soo he is always threatening her and he even smiled after saying this one... maybe Soo thought that the threat doesn't even warrant a reply due to always hearing them hehe....

^^^ I agree. It's just his way of expressing his opinion plus he's really socially inept due to lack of experience. (given that type of environment he was thrown into, I wouldn't blame him)

That one time he killed, he didn't even make any death threats. Just "Who did this!" and slaughter ensued. Even when he stabbed the monk, he just told the monk that since he lived for the queen, he would die for the queen. Not exactly a death threat per se.

Hmm, at the risk of making this more of a mystery than it really is, is an antidote even needed? Some of this just doesn't make sense to me from the point of view of Queen Yoo.

There are at least three, possibly four plots here:

One is Queen Yoo asking Park whathis name and Won to separate So from Mu and for So to lose the king's trust, sending him back to Shinju. That plot worked very successfully.

The second is Yeon Hwa's meeting with Queen Yoo and some kind of plan there. She was probably proposing she marry So, and that So would gain the support of her own (wook's) family in a claim on the throne. This seems the most plausible, and I could see Queen Yoo agreeing to it outwardly, but would she really do it unless all hope of Yo succeeding were lost?

The third plot is also Yeon Hwa's. Now that she has Queen Yoo's ostensible support for a marriage to So and assistance to make him king, it's time to poison the Crown Prince. She wants no one to know about this, including the Queen, because asking for support and the marriage is one thing, a plan to murder the CP is another.

The fourth plot, I think, if there is one, is Queen Yoo's, and it is predicated on my belief that So is only a last resort for her for king. The last thing she would want, therefore, is for the Crown Prince to die while Yo is out of the capital and So is being favored by the ministers.

That means that she might have switched out the poison for something weaker, something that would not show up on the poison test spoon, and that would make So sick but explains why he doesn't in fact die while gulping down three cups of the stuff.

It also explains why she told So what she did, as a test, but also if he does in fact tell, the blame doesn't fall on her but on the person who did in fact instigate the plot, Yeon Hwa, her rival's daughter, and Hae Soo and Damiwon, who she's already said she hates. She can always say he's lying and in cahoots with Yeon Hwa, and Yeon Hwa will corroborate with a bit of torture, and the maidservants, etc., can corroborate too.

Moreover, right in this episode, we've been told she's already done something like this before - had all the blame attach to Yeon Hwa's mother when a court lady miscarried because of poison ten years ago.

It also explains her expressions throughout the poisoning scene. She doesn't look too worried when So looks like he's going to confess. She doesn't even look too worried when So drops the cup.

But when he starts to drink the poisoned tea, a look of strain crosses her face. I don't think she's worried about him - there's not enough to actually kill him anyway if I've guessed right - but because he's drinking the poison the king and Mu will trust him again and therefore her already successful plot one above has just been destroyed.

Conjecture, but plausible I think.

Nice!

I like theory #4. It makes sense if Mean Princess was acting on the poison plot on her own, but somehow Queen SMS got to know about it through her network of loyal palace maids and then decided to ride on Mean Princess' actions for her own purposes. It would explain the scene where Yeon Hwa told the palace maid not to divulge the poison plot to Queen SMS.

That said, I wonder if we're giving the writers too much credit. They haven't developed the palace intrigues and politics with much finesse or subtlety. Much of what's transpired has been signposted with fairly large degree of predictability, sadly.

Ha! I agree. I love this theory, because I'm a mystery writer myself so I think in terms like these ones, but I often do give kdrama writers too much credit, and the politics haven't developed much yet. It just makes sense to me based on everything we saw, but that doesn't mean it will pan out. We will see!

Oh I thought Queen Yoo and Yeon-hwa were both in the tea poisoning plot since the queen wants CP to be dead since the beginning and Yeon-hwa just told the palace maid to have Su delivering the tea (basically killing two birds with one stone) and not tell Queen Yoo about it.

That's interesting and would blot out the whole 4th plot conjecture. For me, my understanding was that Yeon Hwa didn't tell the queen about the poisoning at all.

I think they conspire on the poison, but Yeon Hwa made sure that Hae Soo is the one that serve it without telling the Evil queen, but the court lady betrayed Yeon Hwa and tell the Evil queen so mommy dearest challenge So to save Mu, without telling who is the "measly" court lady. It's a failproof behind a failproof.

1st failproof is for So to sacrifice the whole clan "See if you do it, Son."

2nd failproof is if the court lady got caught, it's Yeon Hwa's fault, not hers.

BAM! Most probably Yeon Hwa is going to copy most of Evil queen's move when she ascend to become queen.

0

Mad applause!

I really do think her telling So abt the plot has a deeper meaning. Since distrust has been stirred between Mu and So, if So comes out and reveals the plot, suspicion would fall on him solely since no one would believe that the Queen SMSS would truly collab with him given how she's been treating him. That would paint So as the sole perpetrator and also conveniently get rid of both So (who will be punished for assassination) and Mu (who will get poisoned) at once. But if he doesn't, Mu will die and suspicion will still fall on So since the ministers under Yoo have been stirring the pot and pretending to favour So.

I just feel so frustrated, like 'what is the point of you, Soo?' Argh. Why can't I like you more? She's just there. Let her be more interesting, savvy, intelligent or at least show that she understands more about the politics of the court. She's basically just waiting for Wook to take her away.

Just give me everyone (including Queen SMS and YH) but no Soo (pinin over Wook) and no Wook pining over Soo. Wook is just all talk no action. I practically scoff whenever he comforts Soo with talk of them being together.

The way the veins in his neck bulged as he grimaces and his mouth twists while he attempts to make a graceful exit...it doesn't help that Yeonhwa is looking on in horror and half of the party attenders are in on the plot/counterplot and NO ONE is saying anything. All for their own benefit, but that's the tragedy of this whole drama, isn't it?

But man, So just willingly sacrificed himself…he has such a big heart and the world did not hesitate to trample upon it.

Lee Jun Ki sells the tragedy of this character. He is so good that he even sells the tragedy of the dysfunctionality of the royal family and the shallowness of society.

Re. Background music.

For the first time ever in my 10-year Kdrama watching experience, I was intrigued enough to follow an episode live.

So at 9 pm last night, I got comfortable on my couch and switched on my telly (my country was showing the international version).

Five minutes into the episode, the beach scene happened, and the rapping came on. I love Epik High and adore Tablo, but no way was I going to stand for rapping in such an emotional scene. Switched off the telly and waited 12 hours for the subbed SBS version.

Needless to say, I've learnt my lesson and will be doing that from here on out.

"The beach scene would have been nice...." Huh?

Aside from how jarring and out of place it was from a directing and music viewpoint, am I the only one who found the beach scene chilling?!

Even more than when he killed the monks and burned them in the temple, this scene quietly showed me that So is an obsessive, deeply dangerous man. It's a part of his broken, damaged soul. It's in his character, just waiting for a trigger.

So many are brushing off his threat to kill whoever Soo likes as just words but does So ever say anything he doesn't mean?

As he himself pointed out, when she was being beaten and he told her she belonged to him, he meant every word. He also reminded her that he meant it when he warned her to prepare herself because he was going to make her his...he took action by asking the king for her. And he means it when he says he'll kill whoever has her affection. I want to believe he wouldn't actually kill, but there's no doubt that he's capable, and that such a person would become his sworn enemy.

Soo knows his threat is real and I believe that's why she agreed to go back to the palace with him instead of with Wook and Jung. It seemed like she didn't want So to catch on that Wook was her love interest. She was trying to protect Wook.

So wants to be good, he's trying hard, especially because of Soo, but he has a darkness in him that he has to fight and overcome.

Lee Hi and Epik High made a great song. But it shouldn't have been used in the drama. Even if they use it, it should only be at the end edits. Modern pop and saeguk just don't mix. I only feel bad for the artists since kdrama fans only cared about it ruining the immersion factor for them.

the stuff they cut that never aired/will air in the Int versoin is the stuff that bugs me. esp if its like barely a second long but adds alot of meaning (like Wang So putting the pin he wanted to give his mom in the prayer stones. KINDA IMPORTANT SYMBOLIC SCENE THERE GAIZ) or Soo clarifying on the beach that she thinks what she saw (WS killing Eun) was just an illusion and she should try to keep him on the good path or w/e. Both were cut from INT version but are important in showing where the character's minds are now and in the future.

I can’t help feeling like some of the characters’ flaws do not even seem like they are fully intended. Legit some of the flaws seem to only come from the lousy writing and editing and can’t really be held against the characters themselves, if you know what I mean? Maybe we can only determine this when the show is over?

Like Heads said, Su's modern sensibilities, where did they go? I feel like the writers maybe just kinda forgot she is from the future like two episodes ago lol.

Personally, I'd rather not say any more in exchange to a future Gwanjong when he says he will kill someone.

Saying nothing more, I hope he had just made another empty threat... Like when he told me before that THE ONLY TIME HE WILL SAY SORRY IS THE TIME THAT I WILL DIE.
Rather than countering and/ or pressing him more about it, that the exchange will be more memorable and prompt him to do things. (Let's be honest. He still will do things, given how he is so fixated on Su now.)

The inconsistency of the characters development has made me throwing away my desire to understand the characters, and just let myself enjoy this drama. I still do feel frustrated, and constantly asking myself why he acted that way, why she acted this way, but since I know I probably not going to get satisfying answer, I just shut off all the thoughts I have while I was watching.

Frustrated as I sound, I still do love this drama. I am so into tragic love story and Lee Junki never fails to amaze me, especially when he drank the poison tea. It was so intense, I could feel my heart beat rising with every cup he took. Too bad Hae Soo kept looking down, I bet if she looked at him I would probably bawling my eyes out, because it breaks my heart so much.

Soo's freakout would have been a lot more understandable if it started building from the first make-up scene where he's getting all territorial and 'you're mine and I'm yours'.

Modern thinking could easily make that scene creepy, flashback to all the times he's threatened to kill her her, that time he was covered in blood, lost his temper etc and then she gets the flashforward of him being the future King during the ceremony.

You know, since the third episode, I have been wondering what the point of her coming from the future was.... except the obvious 'Stop Gwanjong' plot point. But even that could have been handled differently, like Hae Su having visions of the future and seeing a cruel king and realizing that was Wang So after meeting him, or something like that. Because 1. we completely skipped out on all the time-travel hijinks in this drama. She assimilated to Goryeo almost seamlessly. Her makeup skills could have been something she just had, maybe learnt from her mother. The writer could have made her not judgemental to So's scar by using a plot like 'Her mother had scars and she learnt to see beyond the physical with people'. That already makes her different and strong in a time when she couldn't. But considering the fact that she came from this period, she is ridiculously weak and candy like.

I think the future Soo is meant to be teleported to Goryeo and make So into the King as she remembered from history.

Soo's actions, the actions that she took with the intention of deflecting So's fate as a notorious Gwangjong are what actually turn So into Gwangjong. Future Soo is meant to be in Goryeo (with her history knowledge and all) because without her Gwangjong will not exist and the history as we know it will fall into pieces. She is the catalyst and trigger. The history that she learned in school, where Gwangjong existed, is as such because Soo was in Goryeo and caused Gwangjong to exists.

It's hard to explain, but it reminds me a bit of The Butterfly Effect movie, except that in this case Soo is meant to exist in Goryeo .

If that's the case, then I guess Soo's despair will be greater later on when So has become the vicious Gwangjong. It's because of her existence that the kind So becomes the monstrous Gwangjong.

While So is already called the beast based on his stint at Shinju and the monks massacre, those were not the trigger that changed So's core character. Until this point, So, despite his killing spree, is still relatively kindhearted and innocent. Not even with the evil queen schemes, excessive discrimination from everyone, and being used again and again as dispensable piece on the board can change his core character. However, with Soo in the equation, it is different. Soo will be the catalyst that changed So's core character into the infamous Gwangjong.

I do agree that Su needs to be in Goryeo to serve as a catalyst for things to happen but I would like to raise some of this point.

First, Su is really not that smart. She clearly doesn't know her own country's history. So she may be wrong about a lot of things and presumed a lot of things.

Second, I know the show has took creative license to make changes from the original history but based on the things I've read and researched about Wang So, he was not all that bad. Some of the things he's done are necessary to establish and strengthen Goryeo.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Soo does not need to be smart to do any action to change history. Even the smallest action can trigger big change.

Secondly, let's say Soo's memory serves her right and Gwangjong really killed all his brothers. Now, if Soo somehow managed to tamper that, even by causing at least one prince that should've died (according to history) to live, imagine how big the change will be. That now-alive prince will have many descendants that might alter the course of history in so many ways. If one of the supposedly meant-never-to-be-born descendants becomes a key political or ruling figure? The country's history might change all together.

You are right, Gwangjong might not be that bad. But even if he was that bad, I would not be surprised given the volatile era he lives in, where its "kill or to be killed". Moreover, the fact that him, or any prince in history, has more complicated and dangerous life with the throne as the end game.

0

I do think she is the catalyst for So to become GJ, however if she tempers him or not remains to be seen. There are so many theories going off in my head:

HS died and GHJ never stepped into her body thus WS never met her. Men of that time period wore cosmetics, he could have still found a way to cover the scar and become the GJ she remembers from history.

The reason behind this scenario is when he was tearing down the stone towers and screaming that he would make his mother look only at him. If HS didn't exist then she would not have been there to break through his rage and he could have carried that rage all the way to the throne. He does have a bit of his mom in him.

So, if this scenario is true, then HS changes the reason he becomes GJ from that of hatred and rage to that of love and necessity of survival.

However, now I'm curious as to how HS will die. I have a feeling that this is going to have a Gu Family moment. I am hoping for a good ending for Su/So in the 21st Century since I don't believe they will have that in the 10th Century. No matter how much he loves her, she will not become a King's woman. I just have this feeling that HS has to die so he can become fully GJ but his heart will follow her since GHJ is not dead just suspended either in a coma or in the water. Getting to those episodes will drive me crazy (sigh).

And don't count my feelings as a spoiler....I just have a feeling that's the only way to get her back to the 21st Century. Something has to happen to HS and she has already died before so technically HS has always been GHJ in the 10th Century.

0

Which makes me also think that when she had her vision during the rain ritual, maybe it wasn't about what he would become but about what he could have become. Hopefully, this thread gets better explained with more episodes. I just don't see her falling for a modern version of GJ she sees in her visions.

Yeayyy!!!! That is quick! thanks Headsno2.
I havent watch ep10 yet. waiting for ep 11 then im gonna marathon all together.

BTW, the hairclip WS gave HS here is a different one than the one he was supposed to give his evil omma. This one is more beautiful with white magnolia on it. The previous one was butterfly-shaped and already safely buried by him under the Wishing Stones when he rebuilt it back after he trashed it.

The story is becoming darker. My heart bleed for our lovebirds *cry*

Have the son she hated the most ascend to throne. Then put his wife's mother as the dowager queen instead of her and put her in the furthest corner of the palace, behind the forgotten concubines' quarter.

So it was not a sacrifice. It was a mistake that Wang So drank that poison. I wonder though if Queen Yoo purposely misinformed So.

Speculations are Lady Oh will take the fall and die to save HaeSoo. Although i have a strong feeling that it is possible. . I just hope and pray that it won’t. It’s heartbreaking and i don’t think i can bear to watch it.

It's really interesting to think of what the relationship between Wang So and his mother might have been if Queen SMS had thrown Wang So a bone and relented. Or even just been civil to him rather than spiteful.

Wang So is loyal to a fault to those he cares about, and would willingly sacrifice his life for them, as we've seen. He would have done anything for his mother, if she had been smarter and played her cards right.

Required fields are marked *

I honestly believe that So did not make a sacrifice, but at the same time he had all intentions to stop the poison event.

I found it very touching he wanted to have his last gaze on Soo, but at the same time I could only imagine how he must have felt that momma dearest allowed him to drink poison without showing as much as a flicker... (i seen a smirk on her face as he eas drinking not remorse at all!!)

Im glad I kno dude is the main character and he wont die, he will be sick and Hae soo may worry the heck about him and realize her feelings... and if the main court lady does in fact sacrifice herself for hae soo :'( like u all are saying that will definately make for a sad ending for her sad life!

0

Required fields are marked *

I think it was more of a miscalculation from So's part. Queen told him the poison is in the drink. I guess at first he thought the poison would be on the cup, since the meals would probably be distributed randomly. That was why he broke the cup on purpose.
Also so that there would be no traces of murder attempt was done and nobody would get hurt or punished.

When he drank the tea, that was when he realized he calculated wrongly, since the poison was in the tea. Idk, myb at first he didnt think the queen would employ a court lady to put the poison~~

0

Required fields are marked *

No, the food is checked for poison AFTER the court lady makes it. We saw HS being checked. What he didn't calculate that the poison checkers would be in on the murder plot. Which is a fair assumption because i think the poison checkers would be a very important position going to trustworthy people

0

- Oh, So. I want to like you but then you say stuff like this.

- I'm guessing Yeonhwa picked Su to die so Wook wouldn't be able to marry her. Which is terrible but shrewd. At this point I just want a drama about her and her scheming haha

Yeonhwa never liked Su to begin with. Moreover, Yeonhwa's dislike for Su is greater now that Wook is willing to leave everything and pack up to the north just to be with Su. No Wook in the struggle for the throne will render Yeonhwa's plan for ascending herself and her family to a higher hierarchy to moot. So according to Yeonhwa, Su must go so that Wook can regain his senses.

Yeon Hwa is So's mom in the making. She's the same type of heartless witch.

As much as she acts like she's in love with So, she was content to save her own neck and watch him drink the tea fully aware that it was poisoned. What a contrast between her 'love' for So and his love for Soo.

There's no way she loves him. She definitely has affection for him, more than anyone else (until Baek Ah stepped up to plate), but affection isn't enough to stop her ambitions. In her eyes, she's doing what she has to to protect her family.

Yeon Hwa is not doing that just to protect the family, it's because of vengeance. A couple episode ago, when they met evil queen with Lady Hae, Yeon Hwa reveal that because of evil queen the family was exiled from the palace.

I think she wants to be able to somewhat control the situation so her family always get the upperhand in case evil queen do something again.

"as she tells herself that he won’t ever change, nor will he ever hurt her. (Is she using So as a point of comparison?) She would be happy with him. But if Gwangjong were to kill him…"

I think she was comparing Wook to her ex. When she had that inner monologue, I was thinking So may not love Wook after all, infatuated maybe, but not love. She feels safe and secured with him, but that's because she was betrayed and broken-hearted prior to coming to Goryeo, it's a shame but I'm starting to think Wook could be just a rebound. But I don't want her to fall for So just yet, because all of her actions prove she only has pity for him, maybe that pity could turn into love, but now would be too soon.

Hae Su probably had the same issues in her modern relationship with that weasel ex like she has with Wook. She is blindly believing his words, trusts him and doesn't open up about what she feels much. It's very unhealthy. She hasn't really matured in that front despite her history of heartbreak and time travel, her character is still way too naive. And if by Su's logic So only confused pity and friendship with love then it's the same for her. Her relationship with Wook is more like imprinting that happens in birds. He was the first guy to comfort her when she was initially confused and scared about the time jump. Neither of her two relationship with the two different princes are heathy by modern standards.

Haneul is amazing in this episode. The myriads of different emotions on his face when Jung told him about So and Soo's escapades, his hard and scary face when he met them on the road and his scary and determined face as he shot the last arrow.

I'm scared. I don't want the nice, gentle Wook to turn change.

Given how Wook got a bulls eye with his last arrow and how he cleanly threw the dagger into the killer's forehead in episode 2, I think he's very good in martial arts and fighting, even better than Yo, and maybe in the same level as So, sans the field experience. Hence I'm very scared if Wook go againsts So later on

I'm feeling so conflicted right now because I was right there with you. His looks, his smile, his charm. My Wook+Soo feels. I refuse to believe he's simply going to turn bad. Him being possessive or calculative isn't without reason so I can understand. Some are too quick to label him a bad guy after this ep. Characters can be multifaceted and not black and white. He's ambitious, and why shouldn't he be, but he's not malicious. Whether he's truly willing to give up his ambitions to marry Soo is something we'll have to watch and find out, though I have my doubts. If he can find a way to have both, why not? After all, his character's promotional poster did say, “Love and power, I hold both in my heart.”

but those few last minutes were intense. i think i'm beginning to like the princess - she was the one most consumed with the itching to do something, but didn't know what to do. and mom, well, once a viper, always a viper.

but LJK killed it - haha, almost literally. i think the writer is in love with the wang so character, to write him such great scenes. or maybe it's just that only LJK can carry them... don't know. can't wait for tomorrow!!!

“You are the only one on my side. Therefore, I am not sorry for anything. Not for kissing you, or for bringing you out here.”

What i love about this story is they won't make attempts for people to fully like Wang So. If you really think about it. They want to give you a rollercoaster of emotions. On the first few minutes. You'll hate him for being unapologetic towards what he did to Soo and the last few minutes you'll pity him and just want to give him a tight hug.

Would it be a stretch to think that he knew what he did to Soo was wrong but he just doesn't want to say sorry? LOL.

Yes I was pretty upset with So that he wasn't sorry or guilty for forcing himself on her. At least the second time when Soo was doing his makeup, So didn't try to kiss her again without her permission.

I feel that this episode is the turning point for Wook, to the dark side. When Wook told Soo he just wants to be with Soo and leave the palace. I wonder if that's going to come true, and how So and Wook whom both at this point of time not going after the throne, fight for the throne in the development of the plot.

without imposing our modern sensibilities on goryeo times, i think his dialogues are in line with his character. He is someone literally starved for affection. Just look how his face lights up when his father praises him a little or how he chokes when his mother feeds him ... of course then they both turn around and discard him again. So his possessiveness makes sense to me. He just wants this one person to be his.

Yeah @Del, this quote from Love Story said it all! I like Wang So for who he is, though he may be forceful, he is not immoral, vicious, or savagely cruel, or anything like that. He does care for Hae Su, and treat her with respect. There are different ways to woo the girl, even in modern times, it is not like there is a a standard handbook with set procedures to follow, why must he be judged based on our modern sensibilities when that was in the Goryeo era in the first place?

When I watched a drama, I try to view it in the perspective of that particular time period. Required fields are marked *

Well doesn't he say to her in the first or second episode that if he ever apologizes to her, he'll have to kill her afterwards?

Oh, okay, Wang So - please, just don't apologize, okay?

That said, I do think he apologizes to her somewhere else, can't remember where.

0

It's hard to recall when and when not he apologized. He said he isn't apologetic for kissing her by force and taking her out of the palace but taking her away to beach and explained his own predicament, it is sort of his way o saying sorry that he made her do something she did not want to do, probably just to let her understand why.

0

@Barbrey: yes, he did, when he suddenly hugged her in the rain after the ritual, when he smiled oh so sweetly and carefreely afterwards, when he shared it's the first time he ever called the king 'father', when he thanked her for making that came true .....

0

He who unintentionally did something wrong out of true love and regretted but never apologized is better than someone who intentional did it, but apologized or worst still, provided a lip service apology.

Wang So was not frivolous, he was not flirting with Su or taking chances with her to see how far he could go. Like what Lady Oh said, his heart was moved in a big way by Su. Even when the lovelorn So was rejected by Su and was deeply hurt by her tears of resentment, he didn't turn brutal or abusive at all. Su was too important to him, he wouldn't think of bringing harm to her in any way. So it was not necessary for him to apologize at all as his actions spoke louder than words.

0

"Would it be a stretch to think that he knew what he did to Soo was wrong but he just doesn’t want to say sorry?"

Imo, he knows that he was wrong, could see it from his expression of regret after the kiss. And, he did say later that he will never kiss her again without her permission.

It wouldn't be a stretch at all - he realises immediately that she's totally unwilling and it's pretty clear from the look on his face (and damn it that face does unholy things to me) that he does regret the kiss.

But i think in between that time and the time they conversed by the sea, he had thought it over and decided yep, im not sorry. Honestly I'm in two minds about this episode. There were some beautiful scenes between the main couple but I'm getting the feeling that so far what soo only cares about is protecting the 8th prince. *sigh* that is not how I want this romance to start her being a sacrificial lamb! On the other hand you can tell So's feelings for her are real. He regrets what he did even if he doesn't right out say it. The way he sacrificed himself for her was heartbreaking. He was about to spill everything to the King and crown prince but when he saw her he had to change tactics and protect both her and the crown prince even though they were oblivious to that act of bravery. What he did here really showcased his feeling for soo and showed he cares about her more than the actual throne. Don't even get me started on the mother...I will be referring to her as the evil queen cus I don't believe she deserves to be called that at all. She is such a BEEP BEEP BLEEPING BEEP! Can't wait for the next episode! Looks like this are gonna get even more intense!

Well we've hit the halfway point and our lead is still all but in love and ready to marry Wook. I really am struggling to understand when this is meant to be turning around. Its not even 24 eps long!
In terms of this ep specifically, So's lack of social intelligence is understandable but Su's reaction really isnt. Its sort of like she lost character when she first saw the visions, and now shes just sort of a shell of her old self. Plus, its stupid that she didnt think twice about So's possibly violent nature in the future but had no problem naively stating that Wook would not leave her for the throne. Any sort of affection I had for Su are gone and its a shame because she had really great potential. Heres to hoping she reverts back to her old self in the 2nd half.

Is it just me or is the plot moving at snail pace? Theres minute and miniscule political movement in the episodes but as a whole I feel like we get very little done and its all recurring:
- Su and Wook have a cute meeting
- princes have tea altogether and Su always serves
- lady Oh is warning Su of something or another
- So's mum makes plans and puts down So
- 10th prince has either a tantrum or a childish excited moment
I understand that this basically is life in the palace, but so much could get done if the writer tried...
Im honestly upset at myself that I look forward to this show and yearn for it as much as I do because most scenes lack the richness that they could achieve, and I feel like we're turning wheels in mud in everything not involving So, who is the only character evolving. So much potential but like most hyped dramas its turned to poop.
I really hope tomorrows episode gives us some sort of move forward cos Im pretty done focusing on Su serving tea, having secret meetings with Wook and Euns childish antiques.

I agree with you totally! I was really looking forward to this episode but it was very slow paced all the politics blah blah ...what redeemed it somewhat was that intense ending but even then I would've liked a different ending like Soo finding him collapsed after he drank the poison. But I guess that'll be on the next episode...

@Naz
Well we’ve hit the halfway point and our lead is still all but in love and ready to marry Wook.

Well to be honest, given the monologue Su had in her mind it seems as though now she's considering going off with Wook because of feeling of being able to escape from the palace and its shenanigans. And of course to keep all the Princes safe, without resorting to killing each other.

It did seem like she liked him a lot previously but now she just seems confused...doesn't really know what her true feelings are perhaps?

Should've fallen for Baek Ah! The sweet bookworm is everyone's friend.

How much power has Evil queen over the king? She's getting away with a lot, it's almost evident that Su is the only one who dares and can stop her. I also have this nagging feeling that one day Smouldering Eyeliner will snap and do something regretful to get out of her grip.

Thanks for the recap, Heads!

Bad strategy, So. Don't threaten to kill the man Soo loves RIGHT after she ran away from you in fear that you will KILL PEOPLE.

It really is a completely different story having LJK play 4 rather than Nick Wu. The charisma and sexiness are strong for both, but LJK brings more obvious vulnerability to the role. I also believe he really does just want to be loved by his brothers, Dad and Mother. That is why I am afraid of the ricochet effect if they push him away. A prince scorned and all. It won't be pretty, no where near as pretty as he is.

I don't quite get how So's actions would save Su given the fact that he is also a prince and drinking the tea would affect him too? Is it cause, trying to kill a unwanted prince is better than killing the King's favourite Crown Prince? But isn't it obvious the tea was for the Crown Prince? Or did he realise that he could only save the Crown Prince once he drank the poisoned tea?

And what kind of mother smirks while knowingly watching her son drink poisoned tea?! Damn... she was just an incubator for So.

Congrats Queen SMS you just took the cake, in terms of being horrid mother in the history of Dramaland. Guess you've been setting the bar high since the 10th century.

Drinking the poison was not his intention. He just want to break the teacup. The Evil queen played him and said that it was in the teacup, not the tea.

i think he figured if he went away quick enough and died in some corner, there would be a doubt he was killed by the poisoned tea or some other non-soo-related drink.

or maybe he's an eternal optimist and thought he could fight it or find an antidote in time.

yeah I think how it went was:

1. He wanted to expose the evil plot but then saw Su was serving the tea and decided to try to remove the poison in a more subtle way.

2. He thought the poison was in the teacup and decided to ask for the tea to toast his brother so he could break the teacup.

3. That plan worked and he continued to drink the tea as a toast, but unfortunately later realised the tea itself was poisoned. Which explains that exchange of looks between him and his evil mother. Also the change of expression from being so confident and comfortable when he first downed the tea but later having that "oh" moment when he felt the poison kick in.

4. He decided to go through with it and drink the rest of the poison because Su was serving it and he wanted to ruin his mother's plot.

I don't think he thought so far as to how he would cure the poison or die in a corner because his earlier calculations didn't involve him poisoning himself. I agree that it seemed like he just wanted to remove himself quickly because it would ruin things for Su if he died there and then in front of the Crown Prince.

Also what was the point of the poisoning plot? If So really let it happen wouldn't it be easy to find out who the perpetrators were? Or was the Evil Queen counting on So to spoil the poisoning and then what's the value in that? Evil Queen's plots not making any sense. And I would have thought that Yeonhwa would be smarter than to try to poison the Crown Prince in front of an entire banquet.

the queen will keep trying to remove CP until he either is killed in one of her plots or dies of old age, whichever comes first.

CP removed makes the way free for 3rd (cause 2nd is nowhere.) and yo's always been her choice for a king.

i bet she made sure that if so revealed the plot, it would turn out HE was the one behind it, with the help of soo. and she'd be the first to accuse them. i still expect her to twist the story that way.

yeonhwa only made sure soo was serving the poisoned tea (she had that little satisfied smile when soo appeared.) then she got all panicky when so went off-plan. i guess it just hit her then that she could be involved in killing one of her brothers, and one she actually likes and wants to marry! still, she was the only one reacting as if she cared for so... maybe there's something deeper there than a will for the throne.

Required fields are marked *

Her plan sounds perfect to me.

She poisoned Wang Mu to emptied CP position.

She manages to get So kicked out of Palace by framing So for Wang Mu's family corruption information leaks and supporting him as CP replacement. By doing So, the only strong contender for the throne after Wang Mu's death is Wang Yo.

I don't think telling Wang So about the her maneuver was necessary in her plan. However she thought it wouldn't matter even if he knows since he wouldn't do anything about it (and that evil woman enjoyed seeing So being helpless). He wanted to save Mu (because he's loyal to Mu) but If he had revealed Queen SMS's assassination plan, not only Queen SMS, So's entire family, servants, even So himself, would have been killed since that's how the law works in Goryeo period (cwiiw), especially after So had been supported as the next CP by Queen SMS. So it's I'll be damned if I do I'll be damned if I don't situation for him.

Yeon Hwa, without telling Queen SMS (I don't know why she even bother to hide this from her, i believe Queen SMS couldn't care less if Soo died), did some improvisation by adding Soo to the plan so she would be killed for serving poisoned tea for CP.

If only this plan had been worked, it would've been a happy ending for Queen SMS and Yeon Hwa.

Unfortunately, our So ruined her plan. I think it's something unexpected fro Queen SMS. She didn't know how far So would go for the one he's been loyal to. Maybe it never occurred to her that So would be brave enough to put his own life on the line by revealing her plan... lucky for her that Yeon Hwa had already managed to have Soo served the tea... so So couldn't tell the truth because he'd get Soo killed by doing so.

0

they under-estimated how far so is willing to go for su haha and the relationship..

but at the same time, this would become his weakness in the future..

0

At this point, I am more interested to know how Wang So will survive from the poisoning judging from that amount of blood and 3 lethal cups of poison tea?

May be the poison isn't lethal enough to kill? May be not poisonous enough only to reveal that there is a plot to kill CP? The evil Queen SMS should rightfully become the King of Goryeo. She is the ultimate puppet master.

I continue to be swooned by Nam Joo Hyuk and his lace front wig. I'm probably more invested in the Baek Ah/Woo Hee storyline than I should be given their minimal screen time (but they could be beautiful!).

Eun continues to be a douche wagon to his warrior wife. I find it funny that he's basically a trophy husband ? though he'll never realize it.

Lady Oh killed it this episode. It must be like watching a slow motion car-crash of her younger self when she looks at Su. That comment about how she couldn’t live as a woman anymore, washing the bodies of the women that would marry her King. Ugh. GUTTED. It totally made me think about the scene when Lady Oh was doing the same to Su. C’mon! How do you not understand the fatalism there, Su?! Lady Oh laid it out for you, step by step!

She gives Su an amazing out, let's get away from the palace, and live in obscurity. Yes, let’s open a medicine shop in the middle of nowhere called “Oh & Su Pharmacy.” But Su thinks that marrying prince 8 will solve her problems. Has. She. Learned. Nothing!!

I’m still gobsmacked that Su believes that she can get out of the palace by marrying a prince 8. Even if they move from the palace, Wook/Su are still under the jurisdiction of the Powers that Be, so at any time, Wook can be called back to the palace. It’s either be in control or be controlled.

Su reminds me a lot of Sansa in the first few seasons of Game of Thrones. She’s a naive young girl who believes in courtly love. Su’s a young girl who believes that as long as people don’t change, no one gets hurt. Now, I don’t want Su to be raped like Sansa, but I’m guessing ep 11 is her trial by fire.

I'm so frustrated with Soo today. I wish she was smarter and more savvy, it's just frustrating to watch. She seems so willfully removed from understanding the politics of the court.

Why does she think that'll happen (why does Wook think that'll happen?)? It's all so bizarre, she should be paying attention! If she's so worried about what happens in history, why is she not more careful?

I'm just so frustrated by they way the drama has portrayed Soo (particularly when the c-drama version was so politically savvy and smart).

I've been thinking about the things I keep feeling are disappointingly different about this version and it's basically the lack of agency of our heroine (which sadly is often the case for kdramas).

The cdrama was much kinder to women in general, even the wives of the men Ruoxi was in love with were ultimately interesting characters in their own right (and often bonded with Ruoxi in different ways)

This version is determined to leave no stone unturned in vilifying it's lady protagonists. Queen Shouldveneverhadchildren and Yeon Hwa should practically twirl their evil mustache's at this point.

It's kind of strange the cdrama did have the Prince's vying for the throne but it kind of set them up against the King (and no mother's were involved). This one seems to have women at the centre of the power struggle with the princes playing pawns in their moves.

I just struggle with why men are so often given room to be flawed but still ultimately good people and the women either have to be angels or demons.

And g*d d*mmit! Why are all the most romantic moments completely spoiled by the fact that the MF heroine is NOT IN LOVE WITH our hero????? So over the "romance" now and just want the plot.

I can't wait for the next episode. Blood will be shed tonight!

I don't know, I kind of love the women in this drama, particularly the older ones. Lady Oh, Wook's Mom, the Queen herself - none of them are cut outs. Yeon Hwa is a bitch but she's also determined and clear sighted about the throne. I like Chae Ryung, and I loved Lady Hae. I'm not so sure about our two female newcomers, Soon Deok and Woo Hee, but I don't know if I don't quite take to them because of the acting or the characters just haven't had time to round out yet.

i find funny, that people say: the c-version was more woman-centric, but in the reality the k-version has more "active" women, including hae soo (i think many people don't see that this story is not just the history of wang so, and the character's actions are not intended to serve our needs for a happy end for him)

the C-version is definitely more woman-centric , you just heard people compare ruoxi and hae soo but in actual drama, there are the mom of 4th, 8th, who has their talked and said something about the event, the court lady that work with ruoxi, princess min from Mongol, the wives of the prince, like the 8th wives, ruoxi sister, the 10th wives, luwu,

all this character have their own deal than just about the throne, c version has their own individuality as person, as a wife,as a mother and all , they also has bittersweet love story as person that has their own strength to faced their life,

it just the centre of the c-version is ruoxi while k-version is wang so ,
so it's not funny when it's the truth,

the women in the c-version were much more dependent on men than women in the korean version - i spoke of this aspect.

0

the k version has woman that wants the throne by rising with men's power, they depend on men more cause if not, they just rise themselves,

this can't be.compared to the forbidden palace cause qing dinasty already has hirearchy status written down to death, imo many wives in the c.version work for their life and their family by their own influence than hoping the men do something, they put a facade but they have their own palace and subordinate for their own life and secure their man position.

believe of not, the k version is still the male centric than the c version cause what emphasized and important is So and his love story with political journey,
just because the evil is woman doesn't make this version immediately female centric and not depend on woman when all they thought is who will he their husband and what their child can do to rise the woman status,

0

@dena
i feel that we guards in different mills (and it's probably my fault because i was not clear (english is not my native))
the women in the chinese version lived under different rules and customs thanks to the stong influence of confucianism which is not the case in the women of the korean version: in this era they were active participants in the politics and their personal matters.

Speaking of Chae-ryung, I wonder if she's gone for good? Man I liked her and thought she'll be more than the typical maid considering it looked like she had something going on with 9 and knows how to read. But unless they somehow get Su out of the palace it doesn't look like we'll see her again.

I'm starting to dislike 4th here, even despite my love for the phenomenal actor Lee joon ki, so this is just an attempt to be objective about the drama itself. Just judging how he handled the aftermath of the kiss, his facial expressions show that he was sorry for taking a kiss without permission but it feels like he is sorry for it having happened way earlier than he intended it to be, when he was desperate to keep Hae Su with him; so actually he's ok with the kiss, since he said she belongs to him, blah blah, and all the sexist possession crap that he's saying that the drama tries to brush it off as a romantic confession, but you're not fooling me or any other woman here. Where is my mature 4th who backed away from a kiss just because he saw Hae Soo was not ready yet. There were a couple of things that I also took issue with; he said friendship and love is the same to him, which really made me shake my head. Come on, drama, you need to make it clear to the viewers that what he's feeling for Hae Su is more out of love than for friendship; it doesn't logically follow that the first person to reach out to him and help him is bound to be his lover... I don't understand how he doesn't see that's just how Hae Su is, a bleeding heart and helpful to a fault. In any case, he needs to win her over (btw how does he not even know that there's something going on between Hae Su and 8th?!), not keep declaring that she's his etc. Repeating it does not make it a fact, just saying. It only burdens and pressurizes Hae Su, forcing her to choose him if she doesn't want anyone else to get hurt. At this point, I just want to shake Su and tell her to run with Court Lady Oh! Oh no, Court Lady Oh, pls don't leave the show so early like that!

Another issue with 4th's action is him forcibly bringing her out of the palace; on one hand, it was quite brave to defy the king's authority to leave the palace without permission, but on the other hand, it just smacks of immature irresponsibility to just disregard all consequences that come with it. I'm not sure how much of it we can excuse 4th for not being used to following rules after decades of being outside of the palace, but even then his previous conversations with others tell us that 4th is a mature person who does things deliberately after thought and that he knows he needs to be careful in the palace without arousing any suspicion.

That being said, it still gutted me when I saw the last scene. Btw, brilliant political maneuver by the queen, pretending to back 4th just so she could remove the Crown Prince's only ally; that was the only smart move I've seen from her so far! That scene showed me a man conflicted and torn between keeping quiet and getting the throne by default but only at the expense of getting his beloved and brother-ally killed, thankfully he still chose to follow his values and ethics, despite the difficult choice (who can say no to a throne fallen into his lap?), not forgetting...

Oops, didn't realise my rant was that long!

(cont'd)
to treasure his hard-earned relationships with people.

Ljk just slayed that scene! While proclaiming his loyalty verbally, he backed it up with his action of knowingly drinking the poisoned tea meant for his brother. The poisoned tea that he willingly got from Hae Su symbolizes his willingness to go to any extent, even at the risk of endangering himself, just to protect Su and his crown prince, which may just foreshadow the destructive obsessiveness of his love for her later on or the things that he would do for her sake in future. He even tried to conceal the effects of the poison, presumably so that blame won't be directed at Su for serving him the poisoned tea. Btw, how did Su not realise that something was wrong when his hand shook so much just from drinking the cup? That betrayed look in his eyes when he realized that his mother had actually given him the wrong information and did not even stop him from drinking the tea only drove home the point that she actually does not care about him at all.

Just wondering whether she actually predicted that he would choose to drink the poisoned tea? There was emphasis on choosing Su to be the one to give the Crown Prince the poisoned tea, instead of any other random servant girl, and previous interaction between the queen and 4th after the whipping incident showed the queen that he is concerned for Hae Su, so just wondering whether the queen had taken this opportunity to get a win-win situation - she would have poisoned the crown prince if her plan worked, or even if it didn't, the son that she had always detested would be poisoned. If it's true, then it only reveals how sinister and heartless she can be just to be the queen dowager. Her sons seem to be the tools for her to get to the top; we don't even see her mourning or weeping after 3rd left the palace for indefinite time, and I think her hopes are now pinned on 14th, poor Jisoo!

The power struggle between the brothers, and Hae Soo's fate is what I'm staying for. Am I only one wishing that we'll have an episode where she jumps back to the present for a day or something? Will we ever get to know what happened to the original Hae Soo?

I believe it was Yeon Hwa who ensured that Soo would be the one to serve the tea. Probably hoping that if she were out of the picture, Wook would set his eyes on the throne again.

I'll still say that we are imposing modern sensibilities on a historical setting.

Were men and women "friends" before? Sure. But there was a formality to it. You don't go around flinging arms around each other, talking informally and touching their faces. in fact Wook mentioned you could get killed for touching a prince's face. And as someone on tumblr pointed out, HS tracing the scar on his face would be construed more bold than any verbal declaration.

So thats where the clash comes. She is from the 21st century where he is a friend. He is from a 1000 years back where she is the most intimate person in his life. And for the life of him he can't understand what changed.

And his possessiveness, i don't even have to get into that one.

Friendzoned, sexist attitudes, all these are recent constructs. We can say - no means no, irrespective of the time period. But We are really missing the cultural context. To give an example, most here would agree that a girl drinking in a bar wearing a short skirt is NOT fair game or asking for it. But do a general survey and many will say 'she asked for it or its her fault'. And this is 2016!! ... He on the other hand is missing 1000 years of development and conditioning. So by modern standards he will fall short. And that makes him unlikable at times.

I don't like all his actions. I'm with you on that one. But they make sense to me. Given the setting and given his character sketch.

She's clarified any misunderstanding by now though. Multiple times. She explained to him that she wasn't something to "be owned" or to "belong to him" before he was ever even romantically interested in her. At this point, it's not confusion, he's ignoring her.

And I disagree that we can't apply "modern" standards to it because, frankly, violence against women isn't an outdated concept. The attitudes that lead to people thinking that it's acceptable are the same now as it was then. If the modern standard was truly that forced kisses and possessiveness aren't acceptable, then we wouldn't see those things in dramas now. But I can name several dramas that include those from this year.

His actions are wrong then, and they're wrong now. If we would call them out as wrong in a modern setting, why shouldn't we call them out in a historical setting as well.

(Please don't read this reply as hostile. I'm little annoyed by life at the moment, so I'm having a hard time telling how my tone is coming across through text).

I think i wasn't very articulate in my thoughts. When i said modern standards i didn't mean that it was ok. No way. Violence/ assault/ harassment is always wrong. irrespective of the time period.

I just meant that it fits the narrative. In fact when some character in a historical setting espouses today's sensibilities, rather than enlightened, it comes off as forced, mostly. Though this person might be the perfect hero material to root for, it doesn't ring true to me

Like i read about my country's freedom struggle a lot. And you have all these awe inspiring visionaries that truly changed the world as we know it. But when you read their writings you realise that though they were revolutionaries in some fields they might NOT have the same outlook in All fields say towards women's rights, or race, or the institution of marriage, or a thousand other things. But you realise they are a product of their times and their own education system

It doesn't make them right. But i can get where they are coming from. Similarly i am not saying he is right. He is wrong. But for me at least it fits the era and his own character background.

Here's my controversial opinion; I think So's behaviour is problematic but I actually like it in a fictional context, especially in the extreme setting of a sageuk where poisoning people and setting fire to a monastery are completely normalised behaviours. In real life, I hate, hate any possessive actions let alone a forced kiss. In real life there's no way I would advise anyone to date a guy like So, like wtf he clearly needs therapy, a girlfriend isn't going to fix him.

In the fantasy of dramas though, I enjoy the wounded possessive male lead who rarely lets anyone in but loves with a singular intensity when he does let his walls down. I'm not entirely proud than this is what I like, but I think it's okay and within feminist sensibilities that I can like whatever I want in fiction even if this includes tropes and behaviours which I'd find entirely unacceptable in real life.

I agree, So is a typical romance hero that just wants that one woman cause his life is so miserable by painful backstory,
LjK did elevated the experience but the character is still a boring overdramatic hero, if he is not the hero, he probably the fools that die cause he just feels so much than think what he can do to ease the pain, like living in the jungle around.

this version is romance story ala teens's type with mature background, all the buzzed make sense when this theme applied,

Yeah, I'd like to know why too. Evil queen's family is apparently the most powerful and influential, Won's family is apparently the richest. Maybe their interests coincide.

Do you think Won knew brother Mu was supposed to be poisoned? I'm not sure.

So, if I paid enough attention these are the differences between SBS and international version:

1. Last week's SBS chamber scene of the 10th Prince made it into this week's international version.
2. Woo-hee scene with the minister is missing in the international version.
3. SBS version is missing the scene where we learn from Yeon-hwa that Court Lady Oh was pregnant by the King 10years ago but had a miscarriage which was actually caused by Queen Yoo who then put the blame on Queen Hwangbo. (Ok, why would SBS cut this?)

Did I miss anything?

0

Required fields are marked *

This! In OneTVAsia (international) version YeonHwa just said one of the court lady, but if it actually refers to Court Lady Oh, it actually creates parallel between the C-version, Court Lady Oh's story, and Soo's (perhaps) future.
Because in the C-version RuoXi (HaeSoo) eventually did like 4th prince, who became the Emperor, but they never married, she became a court lady who sees the Emperor (4th Prince) everyday, got pregnant, miscarried and the 4th prince blame one of his brother and wife for this, exiling them.
So there's similarities if the court lady in question is Court Lady Oh. And this also put more emphasis on Court Lady Oh's warning for Soo. That it's not just about never actually "together" with the guy she loved, but never having a family as well.

While I love that there were more things going on in this episode, at least the plot going up a notch or two, I still don't appreciate that So had to go to such great length of putting his life at risk just to earn Haesoo's love.

I am not condoning the action of So during the early parts of this episodes but staying quite true to the original novel, 4th Prince really is the possessive type - the all or nothing kind of guy. I guess those threats about killing whomever Haesoo loves so long not Baek Ah is just a way to show how possessive he is. If there is anything about So as a suitor - I always view him as a guy that no one should bring home to meet her parents, he is just the "wrong one who loves you right" kind of guy.

9th Prince Won finally served a purpose and I like that Wook is slowly turning onto his dangerous side. I am done with him playing Mr. Nice Guy and I chuckled over his conversation with Haesoo at the tunnel of the bath house - he hit the nail right on the head - to me Wook is all about words whereas So is about action and that is why, he is always a step or two behind So even when Wook always had the upperhand and the headstart.

And finally, I come to realize the problem with IU's acting. By no mean am I bashing her but just a civil critics that I am done with her "deer caught in the headlight" expression. Partially because of her lack of expression, I tend to have serious problem with the development of Haesoo and So's relationship simply because I feel that she has been friend-zoning him without any glimpse of interest and therefore, I am not happy if her feelings to take a 360 degree turn on him once he consumed the poison to save her. Should IU emoted better, probably we as viewers could have felt the subtle subconscious interest from Haesoo towards So and the poison consumption is only a setting for her to validate that she is indeed in love with So all along.

LJK without a doubt, the anchor of this show. There is no moment that he did not delivered. The last scene when he consumed the poison was truly poignant and I feel so bad that IU have better chemistry with KHN and she did not emote well to compliment the affection of So which LJK transpired very beautifully.

I love IU (she's the reason why I watch this show in the first place) but I do agree her acting is still not up to par yet. However, I also think that Hae Su looking reluctant around So in the last two episodes is not IU's failure in delivering the fact that Hae Su is interested in So. I think at this point of time the script still has Hae Su liking 8th prince more and wanting to stay faithful to him.

Nothing against IU but I think this is the result by both the actress and the writer. I get that she loves Wook but the voiceover when he asked for her hands in marriage, indicating to us, the viewers that she may not be that "really in love" and her love may waver.

And like I said, if she is to fall totally in love with So because of the sacrifice that he made by drinking the poison to save her, then I would view that more of a pitiful feeling instead of love. It is like her way of saying thank you to him.

Therefore, should IU did a better job with her expression or if the writing was done well, may be we could see Haesoo's subtle slow burn feelings towards So that needs some kind of drastic event to allow those rush of feelings to be unleashed.

I just think that it is not fair to make So looking downright pitiful when accordingly, when Haesoo fall for So, she was supposed to fall deep and hard. The writing and acting just not transpiring these.

I've always said that I find IU perfectly fine in this role. But once you get into the deeper end, "perfectly fine" is not enough. Someone was explaining acting (during LR discussions i think) and the idea was that you can't restrict yourself to simply conveying the dialogue or whats on paper. You have to get inside the character's head and express the larger picture of what the character is feeling. And that is where she falters. The move from wook to WS should have been smoother. She should have worked in a little more attachment in their encounters rather than being a nice person always ready to help everyone.

For example, this is from a recent LJK's interview:

Q. Viewers were impressed with the rain calling ritual. What was your approach for that scene?

A. I concentrated hard because it was the scene highlighting the change in Wang So. I wanted to show him regain confidence as a young boy who had been intimidated by cold outlooks but was able to get rid of the stigma of the scar with Soo's help approaching the altar step by step. As So was passing by the common people, the princes and court officials, and the king and his queens in order, I tried to convey how the emotional intensity gradually rose in him.

he didn't simply wave his hand as the cript would say. its the entire feel of the character. his history. his motivations. And thats why that scene rocked

You said it perfectly. IU was perfectly fine during the early episodes where not much subtle emotions involved. At the beginning, every emotions from Haesoo came out very loud and obvious without restriction and IU did just well.

But comes to this stage, she couldn't convey that deep transitioning emotions. I think she has the problem to convey the slow steadyl emotional intensity. Her acting skill is limited and seems to me that she is only capable to make a direct transition instead of gradual shift of emotion. For IU, it's all out or none, there is no in between. Ok, I don't know what the crappy things I wrote here but these are just what came to my mind.

Therefore it frustrates me that Wang So looks like he is locked in a one-sided love with no chance at winning when in fact, he is working on his chances because he knows that there is a glimmer of hope that he may emerged victorious here.

0

I agree that this role requires higher level of acting than what IU can give. She's green and this is no high school drama where you can simply be cute, insecure, angry, pride, humility, then repeat. It's clear that she relies on the script for clues on "what to do" and doesn't have the experience and practice (skill) yet to render a holistic performance.
Acting is very hard work and requires a lot of concentration, self-transcendence and the more variety of experiences you've had the better you can portray people (the good, the bad and the ugly). She'll have to train hard!

0

Yeah and those damn close ups do not work in her favor at all but emphasize her weakness in what seems to be every other minute.

0

Yeah, no arguments from me here. The writing and editing are sloppy, and IU's average acting doesn't help matters. I just hope the show will stay enjoyable until the end.

I’d like to point out how interesting the poisoning scene is. Most of us thought that So took the poison to save Soo (and CP). I even wrote on episode 9 recap that there’s nothing more grandiose than taking the poison by yourself to save the one you love who doesn’t even love you back.

Days after I re-think to myself, while it was a brave (and more dramatic) act indeed, actually it’s a stupid move to prevent the poisoning in the given circumstance. Because whether it’s him or CP who take the poison, Soo will still be punished, so it’s not a very clever way to save her. Someone like So would be too smart to do this pointless action.

But after watching episode 10, I understand.

So’s poisoning was out of his expectation. It was NEVER in his plan to take the poison himself. I would say that So got plan A and plan B. Plan A was solely to SAVE THE CP. He was to tell everyone about evil mother’s plan regardless of the possibility that he would also be framed with her. That’s why he stood up and said he wanted to talk to CP. At that point, I think So couldn’t care less about the fact that the maid would also be punished because he thought it was just some random maid.
But then, Soo came with the tea and he realized who the maid really was. Now he changed to plan B, which was to SAVE THE CP AND SOO. He had to prevent the poisoning so nobody would even know about the plan at the first place. Because he thought that it was that very specific cup which was poisoned, he simply let it slipped. He thought it was all settled, he had saved everyone. Poor boy.

So then proceeded with having 3 cups of tea with the CP. It was only after the 1st cup that he realized it was the tea that was poisoned. Now things got out of his hand. He might have saved CP but still, the poisoning had happened. Soo would be punished. I think in desperation, So still tried his best to save Soo by drinking the 2nd and 3rd cup as if nothing happened, holding the pain and the blood as he walked away from everyone’s sight. Seems like, though almost impossible, he still had faint hope that people wouldn’t think about the possibility of poisoning if he could hold it long enough. Maybe he planned to walk far away and die without anybody knowing, so Soo wouldn’t be punished.

To conclude, what really matters is not him taking the poison (it was never his intention to begin with), but the fact that he, upon realizing he was drinking poison, still, in desperation, tried to protect her by continuing taking 2 more cups and walking away despite of the excruciating pain he was suffering.
To me that was the utmost sacrifice possible in that situation. (LJK’s acting was so superb it wrenched my heart to see him all in pain T.T)

On a brighter side, I think this will recover the CP’s (and maybe the king’s) trust on So. His loyalty to CP is worth more than his life, what more could they ask for?

thanks HeadsNo2 for the recap!
I was really waiting for this since I woke up early in the morning, I had watched ep 10 with incomplete eng subbed version & it is so frustrating..?

@ alln, i think you hit the mark. I was thinking the same thing. Wang So purposedly let the cup slipped from his hand because he really thought that it was the cup that has poison.
The moment he drank the 1st cup, he knew that the tea was poisoned.
And I think you are right that he resorted to plan B inorder to protect Su too.
Salute to Wang So to endure drinking 3 cups of poisoned tea till the end.
The evil queen now has the evil princess as an accomplice.
I guess, the evil princess is already repenting on what she did. Her face shows that she never expected that Wang So would drink the tea.

I absolutely luv your analysis here!

LJK's acting is terrific; he emotes well through his every gesture, even the bulging veins on his hand when he was taking the second/third cup of 'posion'...

However the script is let down by poor writing, poor editing, slow tempo (we need to see more of the infighting and plotting amongst the princes), too many headshots (especially of blank looks of Soo; girl, you gotta brush up your acting!) and awkward choice of music tracks (rap music for a romantic beach scene, you got to be kidding me...)

That said, I am still very drawn to the drama, because of LKJ's acting.

Oh wow!! So fast, Heads!! Thank you so much for the recap!! I realize that I actually don't say 'thank you' enough to all the recappers, but I really, truly do appreciate all your work micro-expressive acting <3

Now that the kinda/sorta love-triangle has been kicked up a notch-- really, when one is willing to kill his love rival, IT IS ON-- it's making me more and more weary and worried about what's to come for our Su-So couple (BECAUSE WE ALREADY KNOW THEY'RE GONNA END UP TOGETHER, it's just a matter of 'when'), and Wook is actually starting to scare me T.T Not only is he trying to fight for the second love of his life, he's also fighting for his and his family's actual lifeline-- getting in line and taking a number to fight for-- the throne, and it doesn't help to have Yeonhwa on the sidelines acting like an angry passive-aggressive cheerleader for her oraboni O.O And now with Su on the line as well, there's no stopping at what he will do... Sometimes-- MOST TIMES, actually-- the most quiet and nice ones are the ones to look out for the most... As they say, "Keep your friends close, [but] keep your enemies closer..."

This recurring motif of change versus trust is really intriguing. Does the show argue that in order to trust, people must remain stagnate? I think Hae Su has a very narrow understanding of ‘change’ and ‘trust’. I gather she means she wants someone’s affections to remain ‘unchanged’ (i.e. permanent, and therefore ’true') because of the betrayal she experienced. But, affections can change without necessarily leading to betrayal. In fact, infatuation, affection, desire, even attraction that comes with first love must change: love is meant to mature and grow. In fact, only when infatuation becomes true love can one utterly trust the lover. Conversely, it’s interesting that Wang So, while drinking the poisoned tea, says that he hopes his friendship with the Crown Prince will never change, and Wang So’s action in that moment is one of loyalty that can be ‘trusted.’ It’ll be interesting to see how the political climate and the princes’ affections for Hae Su will challenge her beliefs.

I really like Wook’s development as a character in this episode. We’re starting to see a different, more ambitious side. Up until this point, he has been the “perfect prince”, consciously playing it safe. If anything, I found him reactionary: he does what he is supposed to do (political marriage, etc.) in order to maintain his status, and cause the least amount of ripples. Yet, upon falling in love with Hae Su, suddenly acting “perfectly compliant” is going to drive him further away from what he wants. Wang Yo said it correctly that Wang Wook lacks focus. It’s also interesting Hae Su tells Court Lady Oh she can trust him because he’ll never change, when in fact he is undergoing change right before her eyes, but she doesn’t recognize it.

I also like how Hae Su’s behavior, while not antagonistic, is firm and clear about her feelings towards Wang So. She still only sees him as a friend. He’s going to have to win her, and not in a way he’s used to: not by aggressive action, but sacrificial deed. I also find it interesting that, for all of her affection for Wook, she never articulates her own feelings TO him. In episode 9, he says he loves her (when she gives him the pillow), but she doesn’t actually respond with “I love you, too”. He asks her to marry him in this episode, but she doesn’t actually accept him. She mused to herself in previous episodes how much she likes him, but she never actually TELLS him. He’s the one spouting all sorts of sweet professions. Intriguing, n’est ce-pas? Yet, with Wang So she is completely open with how she’s feeling. It’s really not intuitive how she reacts to the two of them: her actions (or lack thereof) seem to belie her professed feelings to herself.

Any theories on why she doesn’t throw away the hairpin? It’s obvious from the evening scene that she is thinking about both the bracelet and the hairpin. Why not throw the hairpin away?

Thing is...I love the bare bones of this drama separately (yes, even the music, I downloaded it and loved it once it was detached from the drama) but the editing. I think that's it? It does not make the story into a cohesive whole. There is no continuity at all, not only in the scenes that have to be seamlessly following each other, but in the story and the characters themselves. Example: Wang So was clearly regretful in kissing her. Then that beach scene. It was jarring for me as a viewer to see him saying that he was not going to apologize with his face and his voice all nonchalant. Similarly, when did Soo and Wook's feelings changed from being hidden to revealed in the open (don't tell me that it was when Wook told her he loved her because before that they were acting like lovers already), and that they resolved to let Lady Hae be a blessing and a good memory between them. It's this resolve and the tiny decisions leading to character development that is not shown here, and it leaves a viewer confused. (As an opposite example, we were shown Wook's resolve when Jung went to see him, and in that archery scene. We do see the process of Wook changing, and not just the aftermath. Gah I don't know if I've fully articulated myself, I need sleep.) Granted, a forgiving viewer could fill in the blanks, but then where is the line between forgiveness and foolishness?

Or maybe I should just revert back to watching only Lee Joonki's face. There's less stress that way.

Instead of being an adaptation of Scarlet Heart, this show should have said that it's an adaptation of Jade Palace Lock Heart. The sole focus seems to be on the romance instead of being a serious drama with carefully developed characters or relationships. The only character deeper than a puddle is 4th. 8th has been nothing but second lead without any development outside of being a love interest/love rival and now it looks like he's entering the race for the throne because of Su rather than out of any personal motives. It's a shame, because given better writing I think Kang Ha Neul would have make a very good 8th - his calmness is a great foil for Lee Jun Ki's intensity. Even 4th is suffering from this narrow focus since in this episode he's all about Su. And don't even get me started on Su - girlfriend is giving me whiplash with the way she's acting.

My biggest problem with this show from the beginning is the inconsistency in its tone. On one hand, it seems like a serious drama while at other time it resembled an idol romance. It's like a mash up of Scarlet Heart and Jade Palace, particularly in the beginning. Since episode 6 I've decided to watch this as an idol drama as in this way I can just focus on the romance and enjoy all the pretty. If I treat this as a serious drama, my eyes would probably fall out of my head form all the eyes rolling that I do. Although after all the "you are mine and I don't care if you reciprocate/I'll kill anyone you have feeling for" bullshit this episode, I don't know if I can stay on this love train. If only Lee Jun Ki isn't so ridiculously pretty as So. I keep on being suck back in just to watch his wounded puppy act.

I think the problem is none of the cdrama central players (8th, 4th, 14th, 13th, even the King) have goals at this point. It's only Queen Schemingschemerwhoschemes and her crew (Yo) and Yeon Hwa acting to secure their power bases. Everyone else is just wandering around completely entranced by the amazingness that is (apparently) Soo.

Yeah, I think it's pretty clear by now that compelling, flesh out characters are not a priority for this show. I don't expect nor want the k-version to be a carbon copy of the C-version, but I did hope for a thoughtful, well written drama. Instead, I got a Boys Over Flowers: Gordon edition in the first half, with a side of Lee Jun Ki acting all serious in the 2nd to pay lips service to the original source.

Ultimately, I think money is the culprit here. I guess it's easier to sell a 20 episodes romance series with pretty actors than a 40 episodes serious sageuk. The result is this frankenstein of a show that doesn't quite now what it wants to be.

The thing that frustrates me is that I was hoping for a version that was better than the c-drama but unfortunately plot and character wise it's worse. It's not entirely the editing either, it's the characterisation and the plot. I'd hoped it would take the bones and adapt to the Goryeo history but it seems to have changed the characters but kept many of the plot points and now it doesn't really fit.

Also, while I love Lee Jun Ki and am definitely not unhappy to have him be the main focus of the story. I almost wish that Hae Soo was NOT our main character. She's just totally meh. I feel like I'm being forced to watch her tepid love story with Wook while being aware that there are much more interesting things going on in other places. Because we have to spend so much time on Soo, we lose out from developing the other more interesting characters and their plans/schemes and storylines.

I know that some fans of this version will cry foul at comparing it to the C-version, but unfortunately if you are Johnny comes lately to the game and your predecessor is so well liked then comparison is inevitable. I can enjoy it, but when the time comes for a final verdict, references to the predecessor are natural. What changes have been made? Do these changes improve on the original or interesting/compelling enough in their own rights? In this instance I'm afraid the K-version falls short.

The changes are not the problem. Lee Jun Ki's 4th is very different to Nick Wu's 4th, but I don't mind as I find him compelling (most of the credit goes to LJK for selling the character). All the other changes on the other hand is not so good. All the things that made 8th interesting are missing and there is nothing in their place to make up for it. He's just a shadow of a character. The worse victim is our female lead. Su is written inconsistently and what's there isn't particularly good. We are told that she's smart and can save herself, but she sure doesn't act like it. I don't need her to be all politically savvy, but at least give her some common sense. She's just plundering and flip flopping all over the place. It's frustrating to watch. I want to enjoy both members of the OTP, but Su is just not doing it for me. Although 4th is testing my patience with the extreme possessive bullshit.

Now that we are half way through, I feel that this version is a giant miss opportunity. Lee Jun Ki is killing it, but one good performance can't save a whole drama and most things surrounding him are subpar. At least he is given something to work with when it comes to his character and can take comfort in the fact that he has been universally praise. Poor Kang Ha Neul is given nothing to do. He's so lovely and his talent is completely wasted in this role.

I agree about the inconsistency in the tone of the drama. In the first episodes, it was giving off comedic vibes with Hae Su's encounters with the princes. Then it was all serious with So and his story. It goes back and forth between the lighter and darker tones depending on what character is being shown. It seems like the comedic vibe was toned down after episode 3 or so. I don't mind how the story is going now with the right amount of angst and happiness (?). Most viewers may not care about a happy ending but I'm all about that. It's not fun when a drama ends sadly and leaves me in tears.

This drama has fewer episodes; so, it's very hard to flesh out all the characters well. The story is gonna focus on the main princes and their journey to take the throne. I read somewhere that the original portrayed 17 years of the female lead's life in Qing. That is definitely not possible here, unless they fast forward to 10 years later. I don't plan on watching Bu Bu Jing Xin (I just saw the ending and didn't like it); so this drama focusing mainly on the OTP is fine with me. I just look at it as a separate drama, not in connection with the Chinese version.

ah, wang so will save her because he's awesome like that.

not that she deserves it for how she acted toward him, but still, she's innocent in the poisoning plot.

if he gets involved and rescues her, i don't see her moving around openly in the palace, maybe so will take her elsewhere. in the preview he seems to be dressed in his shinju black clothes, maybe the king is still sending him away and he'll take her with him.

we can only wait and see...

Wow, that was super fast Heads ! I haven't even get the chance to watch this episode

I'm an international viewer but I managed to download the SBS version, with full subtitle from subscene. So I don't have to hunt down the missing pieces because I don't really have any spare time for that.. I guess I'm a lucky viewer :)

Can't wait to get back from work to watch the latest episode and get my weekly dose of So-Soo couple ! I hope I'll get to see their 'normal interaction' as a compensation for their bitter ending last week. You better not ruin my feelings again writer-nim..
