KBS in talks to extend Moonlight Drawn By Clouds

(Did I just hear a chorus of “Noooooooooo”s when you all read that headline? Followed by gnashing of teeth and angry mouse-clicking?)

Cheerful, youth-driven romance sageuk Moonlight Drawn By Clouds is dramaland’s latest breakout hit, and it’s a show that delights me every episode so I’m thrilled to see it getting a lot of love. So it surprises me not one bit to hear that KBS, its broadcaster, is eager to capitalize on that and extend the series by 2 episodes, although the production seems a lot more wary about proceeding than the station.

What’s rather amusing is the confused jumble of news that spilled out today regarding the potential extension, with KBS kicking things off by announcing that it had been confirmed. The drama’s producers were swift to deny those reports, and released a statement saying that while the good reception gave rise to some extension talk, there have been no concrete or official talks about it amongst the cast, writer, or producers. The show stated that it was not a decision to be made lightly and promised to do their best on the rest of the series, bolstered by the love being sent their way by viewers and fans.

So that’s where we stand currently: Extension talks in the works, but nothing confirmed.

I half-expected an extension to be part of the plan when I saw that Moonlight Drawn By Clouds was slated to be an 18-episode series; we’ve had dramas at that length before, but it does seem like the perfect way to build in the possibility of an extension without committing to one. And then when the show blew up in its second week, jumping from its 8.3% premiere to 16%, and then jumping to 19.3% in its third week, it seemed likelier than ever.

Despite my blanket wariness of extensions, Moonlight is still fairly early into its run, having only aired six episodes, so this is one of the better-case scenarios: At least there’s plenty of time to work in an extension without (knock on wood) dragging the story down with sudden last-minute filler plots and extra scenes. I admit that at this early, giddy, excitement-filled stage, I’m amenable to the idea of seeing more of these adorable kiddos and their fantastic chemistry and hilarious facial expressions. By the time week 10 rolls around, though, I may just wish they’d bowed out earlier, riding a high. But that’s always the trick, isn’t it? Creating an addicting drama isn’t nearly as hard as knowing when to go out strong, it seems.

Greedy greedy greedy. What a shame! Instead of extending the drama, why don't they consider of making it perfect till the last episode, something that will make a sweet impression in the hearts of the viewers for a very long time.

Because perfect means nothing to them but more episodes means more money.

And anyway we are all invested already so we will likely watch till the end regardless. Even if we cry and complain about it if it turns out badly.

It's the harsh reality- all the stations care about is money, as much as I would like to believe that deep down they have a sliver of a soul left towards Creating Art and Beautiful Storytelling.

Like you said, what I hate most abt extension how it makes all of us to become their captive audience that can only sigh and moans at the lost of quality.

I know that the stations want to capitalize on their cash cow, but KBS has been quite notoriously vicious recently. Like when theu tried to wring an ext of Jo deulho. I am forever grateful that Park Shi Yang stomped on it. But dear God, I remember how petty KBS looked at that time.

Argh, I fear for my puppies. Darn you KBS!!! Someone needs to vodoo the station, heh.

If only it was modern day, they could simply throw in a few extra Subway and lipstick references and get the extra money that way. But alas, it is harder to fit the ppl into historical dramas...

Not that I wouldn't love more episodes of these cutie pies, just not at the expense of what has, so far, been a well told story.

I think it is a bit unfair to judge KBS on this. Yes, they are a little too overzealous to jump the gun and declared the extension. But it is important that we understand that the station is essentially a business that needs to be profitable. As much as we like to keep the integrity of the story, it makes commercial sense to extend it with the high ratings. As Javabeans mentioned, the drama is still in the early stages so the storyline might not be too affected.

It's so hard to be positive about extensions when they just lead to floundering plots so goddamn always. It seems to me that if the production team had more story to tell, they'd be less hesitant to confirm. Urrggh. This would all be so easier to cheer for if broadcasters cared less about making more money than they did about telling the best story.

Wow, didn't know that, it's pretty funny that apparently 1N2D didn't either lol (although understandable, espeically since it was the non-PBG team and the drama hadn't even aired yet). Quite the coincidence!

I can imagine reading up on Korean history makes sageuks both much more interesting as well as predictable, since you already know the outcome of events :) But predictable in an exciting kind of way. I love seeing history that I know come to life, as if you can better feel the people of history were, y'know, actual people.

0

It's actually fun predicting where the story is going based on the actual history even though they had to change some of it to accommodate the (fictional)novel.

(SPOILER for those of you who haven't watched it yet).

Kim Satgat's historical background has a lot to do with this drama. From the very first episode I can tell that the Hong Gyeong-nae rebellion is going to be part of the show because that's the only rebellion that is related to Kim Satgat. Sure enough by eps 6 they revealed it.
Hong Ra-on is basically a character from the novel (fictional) but she has the same last name as the rebel leader Hong Gyeong-nae so she must be related to him. By now we already know that she is his daughter.

Knowing the history makes it predictable but in a fun way because you can't be so sure if they'll run with it or twist it.

0

Yeah, it's like when they film yet another version about Robin Hood or King Arthur and you've read a lot of the source material. You know the basic gist of it and may end up knowing all the details as well, but it also might end up going in a completely different direction.

0

@juniper
Yeo Jin-gu is 2nd to none in sageuk among his age group. He was incredible as Prince Yeoning/ young King Yeongjo in Jackpot. He is the male Kim Yoo-jung.

I've been loving No Young-hak for a long time. He's one of my favorites. I don't consider him a flower boy. He is handsome and manly for a young man with talents to go with it.

Bo-geun Cheon has been MIA for 2 yrs. I hope he is just busy with school.

You know who I really want to see in a sageuk? Go Ah-sung. I have seen everyone else in a sageuk except for her. I would love it if she pulls a Han Ye-ri on us. Ye-ri made watching SFD worth it.

0

This is my first sageuk and i am so excited to know that the characters in this drama have historic origin.. I am interested to know more about these family dynasties and the key people in history. Would you recommend a good site to read on Korean history... something that's easy reading but with credible facts?

0

I've been reading up on him since you mentioned him a while back, and he's pretty awesome. I would watch the heck out of a show about him. It's too bad Lee Byung-hoon isn't interested in telling that kind of story anymore :(

I know, it's kind of sad. We were just born in the wrong era lol. I wouldn't appreciate good sageuks 10 yrs ago to be honest. I was just a stupid little teenager who thought old people's tastes were so outdated and weird.

Yea I want his real story, Sangdo style. We can dream right?

0

Required fields are marked *

Yes, we can dream haha. I just wish sageuk would rise again. I was watching some cast interviews after I finished Jung Do-jeon and it was so sad to see people like Yoo Dong-geun say they were depressed about how much the genre had fallen and that they hoped the show would revive it. Doesn't seem like it has.

Ten years ago I'm pretty sure I would've been all over stuff like Sangdo and Heo Joon, because I liked adventure stories and they both have have some of that (all the outdoor shoots, Heo Joon searching for medicine and Sang-ok journeying to make deals). I doubt I would have appreciated more political or tragic ones, like Shin Don. I might have liked Conspiracy in the Court because it looks cool but I don't think I would've understood it lol.

0

I cry for those talented actors of old but mostly for me. They will surely be missed. I'm also sad because sageuks keeps them employed so they don't have to retire early.
I'm sorry but our current flower boys even with fan professed talents don't even come close and I doubt they'd be as good in the near future. So much emphasis on looks these days that some will just ride with it.

I had to watch CitC a few times because I was just in it for the thrills at first. Woo conspiracy...Sherlock...Joseon... fun.
When Eight Days came around later I was already in that mindset.

It's unlikely possible to watch the original Heo Hoon (1975) with Kim Mu-saeng but I won't complain with Jeon Kwang-leol's version. He is just awesome!

I'm learning to be more open minded with remakes because even though it won't ever be the same, I might discover some new talents or stand out performance like Park Eun-bin in the latest Gu Am Heo Joon.

0

@Kiara. Yeah, I can't think of many flower boys whose careers will outlast their youth and looks. In fact Song Joong-ki is literally the only big name exception I can think of atm (well, Yeo Jin-gu, if we can count a teenager). This generation of actors has no intensity, no charisma, no individuality, and almost no talent. There are a couple promising talents coming up, like No Young-hak or Cheon Bo-geun for instance, and a couple who are decent, like Lee Je-hoon, but it's embarrassing and sad to even compare most leading men in their 20's and early 30's to older ones, people like Han Seok-kyu, Choi Min-sik, Choi Min-soo, Park Geun-hyung, Jo Jae-hyun, Kim Kap-soo, Kim Myung-min, Yoo Dong-geun, Uhm Tae-woong, Jung Bo-seok, Son Chang-min, and so on.

There's so much more to be optimistic about as far as actresses are concerned it's ridiculous, even if some of them aren't getting enough recognition right now--we've got Park Eun-bin like you mentioned, Seo Hyun-jin, Jeon Hye-bin, Kim So-eun, Go Ah-sung, Kim Ok-bin, Park Bo-young, Moon Geun-young, and Moon Chae-won, not to mention youngsters like Kim Yoo-jung, Kim So-hyun, Kim Sae-ron, Kim Hyang-gi, Jin Ji-hee, and Seo Shin-ae.

0

@juniper

I think maybe part of it has to do with the innocent image they "have" to keep as it's trendy right now and their agencies probably force them into it. Also, plastic surgery has gone crazy. I mean, jaw-shaving? *shudders* That's not great for individuatlity nor micro-expressions. It's tough to show great acting if botox, silicone and reshaping has removed many of your micro-expressions. They're often what truly makes an actor great, which is why I always get sad when I see actors with PS and it always distracts me, because their face just isn't as movable. Of course, it's their face, they can do whatever they want, not judging them for it, just saying that I find it sad that they feel the need to do it especially as it makes their job a lot harder to do well.

I think a few of the flower boys show promise, don't know if I agree with Song Joong Ki, he's a bit of hit-and-miss for me. But SIG's the only young actor I can think of who's truly a great actor already (yes, here we go again *gets out fangirling fan* LOL). He's definitely not a flower boy though, wouldn't even call him handsome. But intensity, charisma, individuality and talent? Absolutely.

0

Unless... does Yoo Ji Tae count as older or younger generation of actors considering he just turned 40? Because he's definitely not one to be easily dismissed, he's making me want to punch his face in so much in The Good Wife right now lol.
But again, definitely not a flower boy. Handsome yes, flower no. More like a tree? Oak perhaps?

0

@Kaybee. I was not clear at all, but I was counting people at 31, 32 at most as the younger generation. I just can't seem to connect the mid 30's set (Kim Rae-won and Hyun Bin for example) with people like Lee Min-ho or Yoo Ah-in. They came up in a very different, more open and eclectic environment. People in their 40's are definitely veterans imo--they can't really survive on looks alone anymore, and their careers are usually long enough at that point to suss out if they have any interest in acting as an art, not just a career. So Oh Man-seok for instance is a point for the older folks from my perspective (cannot believe he's 41 already O.O). Yoo Ji-tae is the same, especially when you consider his biggest claim to fame is Old Boy, which came out in 2005.

0

Haha. When you get excited to see historical figures from one sageuk cameo in another, you know it was a good drama. Sometimes it can get in the way though lol. I've tried a couple times to watch Sejong the Great, which according to Mr. X is a legit sageuk and much better than Tree With Deep Roots, but I keep missing Han Seok-kyu and quitting.

0

Lol I got tired of Sejong halfway and ff through it till the last episode so I do understand. It was a bit too slow for my liking but I endured for Kim Young-chul and Choi Myoung-gil. I was afraid they might end up killing each other in real life haha. That's how good they were. (Choi Myoung-gil is going to be in Entourage so I'm going to tune in. I totally miss the fiery queen of sageuk).

Tree was more exciting to watch but not because it was better. Song Joong-ki's finest sageuk moment, Han Seok-kyu was perfection and our endearing Jo Jin-woong's Warrior Moo-hyul <33333333 triple the fan-girling lol.

Feels like a dream from a dream. I don't want to wake up to the fluffy era of sageuks....

0

I love Kim Young-cheol! Why don't they make actors like him anymore :( Choi Myung-gil is great too!

Haha we can't forget Yoon Je-moon! Jo Jin-woong as Moo-hyul though, totally agree <333333333 Tree With Deep Roots certainly had an amazing cast.

0

Uh forgot Yoon Je-moon. I hated his character that's why haha.

0

I hope KBS prioritizes the quality of this drama to be the foremost. That being said, I think people are condemning their efforts to milk the cash cow too much. It is not like money showers down from the sky or springs from the ground. They need money to make new programs after all.

Programs like the new Imjin War 1592. It is a new historical genre KBS is trying and is called a factual drama. It's only 5-episode-long and two (Korea-centric episodes) aired so far (the remaining 2-3 episodes will be the Japanese and Chinese sides of the history). The second episode which aired this Thursday night garnered 8.1% viewing and pretty much quartered the Thursday 10-11 p.m. slot ratings. It is excellent and recommended for the lovers of true, serious sageuk dramas.

I don't remember ever liking any drama extensions so I'm always against it. Drama cut sucks but I do understand to a point when the ratings falls below 5%.

Didn't they just do "The Jingbirok" last year? What's the difference between that and this new Imjin War?

I know it's expensive to make sageuks but they do have their own sageuk set so the production cost is not as high compared to SBS.

0

Yeah, the PD said only KBS could have made this "docurama" because they have vast experience, accumulated know-how and resources making big sageuk shows like Tears of Dragon and also running EBS programs for the last several decades.

I think the main difference between Jingbirok and this one is that they fact-checked every single thing that happens in this show and tried to show what actually went on inside the warships during all those famous battles led by Admiral Yi Soon Shin.

They are also going to show the political background and atmosphere in Japan at that time which led to the war (they are only using K-actors speaking fluent Japanese to play Japanese characters). Also, a Chinese production team and Chinese actors filmed Ming's part in the war.

0

Now I'm all excited :). So who is helming this? I had no idea they were doing a docurama. Thank you!

KBS youth sageuks is rather interesting. Moonlight vs Hwarang. Battle between producers Jung Hae Ryong and Kang Byung Taek.

KBS had a slump last year in terms of ratings. This year (so far) with DOTS which became a super hit and now MDBC pulling numbers, they are getting even greedier. It seems they did not expect that MDBC will do this well and now seeing how the numbers have jumped higher and higher, they will take advantage for more profit. Funny because they touted UF to be the next DOTS, but it tanked, and here is a show that was not heavily promoted, but is pulling ridiculous numbers. Gotta make up for the loses. The greed is real.

You instatiably greedy money hungry ***holes.

When will they learn to STOP making the poor writers keep changing their scripts? There is no point for writers to write a beautiful well paced story because it gets all mucked up by the mercenary station.

Bleah. This news kind of ruined my day. I just hope the show won't be ruined. I love it so much.

@Michykdrama

I posted the same thoughts as you in comment #46 below. Pretty much what happened with BM left me bitter about KBS. I was praying they would not touch or ruin Moonlight with their greed. You know what's funny? KBS used to be my favourite public channel last year since they always give the underrated dramas a chance. They never cut a drama I like with low ratings and always let it complete their run. Example dramas: I Remember You (had really low ratings as low 2% during their run but is a high quality drama), Healer, Orange Marmalade. Not many tuned in for these dramas yet they had their full run. I feel it's only after the success of Descendants of the Sun is when they started to change. They really changed a lot this year (perhaps it's because they didn't want to lose out to the other 2 broadcast stations). It's sad that KBS used to be a decent station...now they're just like the other two.

Im not watched Beautiful Mind before, but I knew tht BM cut from 16 to 14 ep? Or 12? And after BM, its Moonlight tk mon/tues slot.

With Moonlight extnd, now i pretty sure KBS is abt money and successful drama rating. LOL!

But i love Moonlight and even kbs extend ths show i will watch with my heart! ?
And i hope we will have our special eps.. ng making n bts!

They could do what they did to DotS - rather than having an extension they released 2 special BTS episodes of the drama. I wouldn't mind seeing that instead...or like @ Mary suggested, 2 special episodes of side story.

But then thinking about it... because it's Park Bo Gum I am pretty torn. I don't want his drama to be ruined but at the same time if it is extended I get to see him on my screen for longer. On a positive side, another beanie below mentioned that it may not necessarily be a bad thing after all given that this is an adaptation from a manghwa... usually with manghwa adaptions they have to cut down in material shown, so extra episodes could mean that more of the source material could be shown and we get more insight to the story. After all Moonlight (the manghwa) in English subbed version is no where to be found.

Another bright side I'm looking at is this. If the extension pushes through and the ratings keep on rising until the end, more doors will open for the young actors for subsequent drama offerings and cf deals. At least the actors who've worked hard will gain exposure and hopefully it leads to more opportunities for them.

Just aired special episode or BTS if you want to milk the popularity but don't touch the show,

if you read this writer can I have a suggestion?
you can have kwak dong yeon special episode in another alternate fantasy,
have an SP like JDrama,
we get back to 2016 when they meet again and have teenagers adventure to reclaim the only picture left for Lee Young and Ra-on in the mystery village,
started when kim byung yeon and friends visited museum and the place open a submission, he needs money and realized he had a the exact sword that displayed as picture at his grandad home but he can't sell dad based on his inheritance and contact his friend,
they want to spend their vacation to uncover byung yeon family tree since the museum give a big prize for their collection,
they go travel around the village ala Detective Conan or sherlock Holmes and try to find a clue,
on the same time, there's a thief who try to steal the sword for money hired by his long-long auntie..
see it's an easy griping drama ala the tomb (the chinese drama) or inuyasha with easier take,
at the end they submit it to the museum and laughing because the picture resemble themselves,

you can filmed this, not related to the drama and you milk the popularity, we fans get to see them more without much hope for the MDBC cause it already finished ant this one acted as separate story,
everyone wins!

so I read from soompi that the agency said that it was the first time they had heard such news.

If we had heard anything about the drama being extended two episodes, we would have started discussing schedule adjustments, but as of right now, we haven’t been told anything about an extension.”

“Moonlight Drawn By Clouds” content producer Kang Byung Taek also said, “The two-episode extension is something that was simply brought up internally at the station, and hasn’t been discussed at all with the actors, writer, or production staff. With the current script writing process, it may be difficult to extend the drama.”

Go Producer!!! please

Stay strong Producer-nim! The only extensions I want are to see the fan signing of the ratings hit 20% and PBG on a date with KYJ if they hit 30%. I could also handle a BTS Special. BUT DON'T TOUCH THE ORIGINAL SCRIPT! Just, don't do it. It never works out. Let a show run its intended course. It's like eating an entire cake; at the beginning you wish there were more but by the end you are sweaty, nauseous, and asking yourself what you were thinking.

KBS doesn't care because they aren't the ones eating it. They are just collecting the extra money paid for upgrading to a bigger cake. They couldn't care less if we choke on it or vomit it out. All they care about is that they get paid extra for a bigger cake.

It's not just KBS that does this! It's the ridiculous norm in the kdrama business. I literally read an insider in the industry state that. They know it affects quality and they don't care. It's just a a way to capitalize on a show's popularity. Heck, even TVN did it recently with Oh Hae Young again.

Nice, just when I start the show. This is such a turnoff!!

I'm sorry but even when extensions are tacked on even fairly early in a show's run, it still tends to affects a show negatively. They are nothing but bad news and is why I wish more shows were pre-produced. These TV stations don't care, they will sacrifice quality for quantity and increased ad revenue.

I hope the production team stands their ground, they have the upper hand here.

I second on doing a special. People still end up watching those if the show itself is good from beginning to end anyway.

Actually, if the producers/writer/actors approve and aren't bullied into it, I'd be surprisingly okay with this for once.... it's not like they have to pull plot/tricks out of thin air since it's already based on a pre-existing novel/webcomic.

I mean, there must be some threads/story-arcs they had to cut during the adapting-stage that could be added rather seamlessly, and since it's so early in the series, they'd have more than enough time to make the transition a smooth one.

Of course, I don't know Korean and haven't read the comic, but judging from the ratings and the huge amount of chapters, it seems like there'd be plenty of content to take advantage of. So an extension, in this particular case, might not be as awful as people are making it out to be.

Nothing is likely to ruin a currently smoothly running drama more than an extension. If it's a crime drama, extension may make sense but for a rom-com it may backfire.

I hope KBS will not proceed with this plan -_-

Rather than an extension, I would prefer behind the scene special episodes. I love seeing BTS videos and the cast of this drama seems to be a cheerful and close bunch, so I think it would be fun to see them interact with one another. I think they can fill at least 15 minutes with clips of fanclubs and celebrity friends that sent food trucks alone. lol

I personally think that 16 is a good number of episodes, compact and solid for a good-plotted drama, and honestly too much for a many kdramas. 18? Maybe. But extensions for the sake of rating? Nooo. The extension to Another Oh Hae Young still left me pretty bitter.

I do share your concern but I keep shaking it off and putting all my hope in this production and that was the case before Moonlight even aired.

So far it's better than expected especially for a fluffy youth sageuk.

You know it's funny how KBS is so quick to cut a drama short when ratings are low (ala Beautiful Mind)...but wants to extend when it's a hit drama like this one. They better be grateful to the production team behind Moonlight and their actors (Yoo Jung, Bo Gum etc) because without them they wouldn't have another hit drama for the second half of the year.

I miss the old KBS from last year when dramas with low ratings like I Remember You, Orange Marmalade etc were given a chance to finish their run the whole way without cutting. Speaking of it, KBS was also home to Healer too...pretty much a lot of my favourite dramas from last year. Now they're just money-hungry all the time after their success with Descendants of the Sun. Sigh

That's why it's scary when networks get possessive. Hearing PBG being referred to as 'KBS' son' in an interview (even though it was all in fun) made me a bit concerned. Yes KBS is really good to actors when they like them. Joo Won went from Baker King to Ojakgyo Brothers to getting a stint on 1N2D. Song Joong Ki went from Music Bank to a breakthrough role on SKKS. And after doing Tree With Deep Roots on SBS he was able to come back to KBS and do Nice Guy and recently DOTS. PBG was also a Music Bank MC and has a lot of KBS projects under his belt but PBG's first drama was Hero on OCN. With his debut on OCN and success in tvN's Reply 1988, MNet could also call dibs on him. I just hope PBG continues to pick solid projects no matter the network. Lee Jung Suk has really done a bang up job of getting hits on every network. I hope PBG can take a similar path in dramaland.

0

@ Nerdy

I don't blame her. She was SBS's star writer when it comes to ratings but they picked up Kim Young-hyun's SFD over her DotS. She went with KBS because they were willing to invest in DotS.

0

@Mia
They are so manipulating. Like he owes them anything.
I hate those reporters too. They are manipulating the actors into making a promise to make appearance in certain shows if the ratings reach a certain percentage.

0

Sigh.

I am also exceptionally worried since the cast is so young (but so darn talented nonetheless!!) that they will easily get bullied by KBS regardless on how they feel about the situation.

Oh well. Only time will tell what will happen and how the story will unfold. Fingers crossed for the best.

And i Feel you about PBG. If i remember correctly during BM days we agreed that KBS should have flops for all their shows except Moonlight because of PBG. (that was you right? haha) XD
So yeah, happy for more of him but sad about potentially ruining a currently near perfect (to me at least) show.

The networks don't seem to get that popular actors have schedules that can't always be canceled . Many of the actors could be signed on to shoot other dramas and films in the time KBS wants these extra eps. PBG could have shoots for CFs that could require him to leave the country for an extended period of time. These extensions wind up hurting the actors because juggling schedules can often put them in a bad light with the production of their upcoming projects. I can see why actors put their foot down. The networks have no right to be mad if they didn't secure the actors and production for a possible extension when they signed on.
