Ji Chang-wook: “The K2 will be my last action drama”

Say it ain’t so, Healer-ya! Thankfully, I think Ji Chang-wook (Healer) was kidding about this being his last action series, because the alternative would be too sad. At the press conference for his new action thriller The K2, he explained good-naturedly how difficult the action sequences have been.

“It’s so difficult. It led to me telling myself that I would never do action again. The K2 will be Ji Chang-wook’s last action drama,” he said with a laugh. He added, “I thought that as the episodes went on, the action would get reduced. It’s so difficult… it’s the most tiring project I’ve ever done.”

The new tvN Friday-Saturday drama from PD Kwak Jung-hwan of Chuno stars Ji Chang-wook as a bodyguard who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and gets sucked into a political family’s dangerous war. Yoon-ah (Prime Minister and I) plays the hidden daughter of a presidential hopeful, played by Jo Sung-ha (Neighborhood Hero), and Song Yoon-ah (Assembly) is his ambitious chaebol wife who’ll stop at nothing to get what she wants.

Ji Chang-wook said, “I was worried that [The K2] would be similar in color to Healer, but because the tone and feeling of each is different, I trusted that this project wouldn’t appear too similar to Healer. I want to show a manlier side, and emotion that has depth through this project.”

His co-star Yoon-ah stated that she chose the project because she liked the character—a recluse with a severe panic disorder who’s been hidden away her whole life. She said, “I’m working hard in the hopes that it’ll be a defining project. Before, labels like ‘idol’ or ‘idol-actor’ and prejudices against that felt burdensome and I had a hard time. The K2 is a project that I’m not doing by anyone else’s standard, but because I want to challenge myself. So I’m trying not to pay attention to prejudice or labels. Some of the burden has lifted. I’m learning a lot from the staff and my sunbaes. I think choosing The K2 will be my good fortune.”

PD Kwak said that he warned actress Song Yoon-ah that she wouldn’t look pretty in this drama, and she might have to be on camera without makeup or glamor lighting, but she signed on anyway. Song said of her character, “If you look in the synopsis, she’s described as a witch. Because it’s an evil character, I didn’t calculate or anticipate anything as an actress. It’s a little bit of a departure from my previous characters, but I thought of it as a chance to expand my breadth as an actress, so I didn’t hesitate to say yes.”

Jo Sung-ha plays her husband, the presidential candidate with too many secrets. He said, “I’m happy to be with the two Yoon-ahs—Song Yoon-ah, Im Yoon-ah—who represent our country. I’m very joyful. When I meet them on set I want to see their faces one more time.”

In the latest teaser, Ji Chang-wook’s bodyguard character asks Song Yoon-ah what choice her husband will make, while she looks down at stepdaughter Yoon-ah and says in voiceover that you have to keep the person you’re wariest of closest to you. As Ji Chang-wook saves Song Yoon-ah repeatedly, she says in voiceover, “You were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and saw something you shouldn’t have seen.” He carries her body away from an explosion and says, “Because I can’t let innocent people die because of me.” Hm, I thought he’d mostly be saving Yoon-ah in this drama, but I guess the bodyguard will be saving everyone.

The K2 premieres this Friday, September 23.

He just did that Chinese series that had a lot of martial arts in it too, so he's probably just tired at the moment. And I think maybe his enlistment is coming up soon? But he'll probably do action again, if only something like how Song Joon-ki came out of the military all fit and ready to do a military drama.

So an update. DF has a similar article but JCW is saying he suffered severe muscle pain in his neck. But, frankly, reading the article it sounds like he overtrained and overexerted in cold conditions. This is an avoidable issue (kind of an OSHA issue but maybe they don't have that in Korea), for sure.

I know that Healer was wildly popular, and indeed I loved JCW there :) However for me his best role was in Empress Ki; he was superb and showed a big acting range, he was vulnerable, loving but ambitious, weak and strong at the same time, and absolutely magnetic ?...So I am looking forward to see new sides of him after K2 and happy to hear that he wants to try something different; I know that he will not disappoint :D

I noticed the dialog for episode 1 was a bit lacking in the beginning so.., anybody know what's up? I can't wait to read the recaps, hehe!!!

Action hero Ji Chang Wook, you'll be missed!
But I think he indeed has done quite a lot of action projects, Warrior Baek Dong Soo, Healer, The K2 and his upcoming movie Fabricated City. So probably he wants to challenge himself with new roles in new genres.
I, for one, want to see him in sageuk or legal/procedural drama.

Didn't he star in another Chinese drama...My male God? or something. No word about that.

Anyway,welcome back JCW! ?

Now now... Wook has only been away for a little under a year working on his Chinese projects. Although it feels like much longer to some of us. :D

Fabricated City: Tentatively set for a late 2016 release

Mr. Right/My Male God: Still has yet to find a broadcast station and the recent THAAD developments between China and South Korea have not helped that process any. On hold for now.

Whirlwind Girl 2: Finale was on 15 September. I'll be writing up a review on it after K2 gets a foothold, so I'm reserving comment on it for now.

Ji Chang Wook is a good actor who shows a lot of range in his work. I've always been able to connect to his characters.

I've only seen Yoon ah in the Prime Minister and I and she isn't bad, but she didn't show quite the amount of rang needed to play such a complex character as the one she's set to pay in K2. If I was casting director, I would have tried to cast someone with known range, that's done something deeper than the bright and bubbly roles. However,I hope she's able to step it up. It's good that's she's challenging herself, and I hope she rises to the occasion. It's sick or swim I guess.

Guys, just because we're not IU or Yoona being thrust into the arms of a 1000 hot korean actors doesn't mean we have to hate on them.
Are they excellent actors that are at the "same level" as their actor counterparts? No.
Are they Idols getting casted for their star power? Yes.
Mostly they're there to be pretty and they make their male co-stars look great. But the point is they're getting hired and we're not. So let them do their job; it's hard as it is being a woman in a man's world.
In the mean time we can imagine ourselves as the girls and express our opinions... about them but that's just how the Korean entertainment Machine is greased to work.

personally for me, i wouldnt say she is horrible but average at best.however im not sure whether average will cut it with a character like hers in the drama(where as it could be passable in something like a light rom com). since she seems like quite a emotionally complicated character, i hope for yoona's sake she is able to pull it off somehow or else is quite disappointing to watch especially contrasted with actors who's acting skills are top notch. idk, maybe she will improve but im not sure if she can fully pull it off. i'll have to wait to see if that will be enough for me

Yes, she's perfectly adequate in romcoms but it's the complexity of her role is what worries me, exspecially since she's a central character.
If she's not able to pull it off, it could really damage the show.

I'd really love to see her kill this role though.

Hoping for the best.

Another new show to look forward to! I think JCW fits action. He does not have to stop doing it. He can just insert a different type of genre or role in between. Even if he consistently works in the action genre he can still show variety granted that the roles are not similar types.

Yoona is very much aware of what people think of her acting. I think she's decent and has the potential to be good. Let's just see how she will deliver this time.

"Yoona is very much aware of what people think of her acting."

I have always wondered if actors get honest feedback about their acting. Sure, there are haters and antis who post non-constructive criticisms but fanatic fans are just as bad with their praises. If an actor is hardworking and seeks to improve, I am sure he/she will seek out real feedback or criticisms and learn from there.

I don't follow Yoona in any way. I've only caught a bit of her in Love Rain and Prime Minister & I. I think she is trying something different in this role and hopefully she is convincing enough to pull it off. I love it when actors try different things.

0

Required fields are marked *

I also wonder (because I have not seen them) if the actors with "acting issues" talked about the views of the general public on their acting just like how Yoona talked about hers or do they just stay in their bubble. It makes me curious especially those who keep getting lead roles despite being known to be bad in acting.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I follow her as I've been a fan of SNSD for many years now and I admire how hardworking Yoona is when it comes to improving herself. I think one reason why she's quite a hit in China is how proficient she has become in speaking Mandarin. Like where does she find the time to do it? It is also pretty gutsy of her to take this type of role. (And, I must say, for TvN also to run after her, considering that she turned it down initially, instead of casting another actress. )

It is also refreshing for me to read an interview such as this where an idol actor is very much aware of how her acting is perceived. I appreciate her openness in saying that it burdened her initially. It would be great to hear from IU, Suzy, Hyeri, about this also.

I'm starting to freak out ahead of time because in just a few days, my drama watching week will have the crown jewels of all my favorite actors. EVERY ONE OF THEM!! Ji Chang Wook, Lee Jun Ki, Seo In-Guk, Park Bo Gum, Jo Jung-suk, Go Kyung-pyo and Jung Il-woo.

Oh my Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! It doesn't get any better than this.

If, suddenly, Jang Hyuk and Yeo Jin-goo showed up in anything at the same time, I would combust on the spot. Thank goodness I'm holding still with great WiFi these days!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, South Korea, for bringing this joy into my life.

I really hope this drama is good. I'm worried about the writing, but the action is almost guaranteed to be good with this director, who worked on Chuno. In the episode 1 preview, JCW worked with an action director who incorporated a lot martial arts that would be used a bodyguard with his military background. There seems to many impressive camera techniques used. According to the preview, K2 used a technique that was used in the Matrix and never used in Korea before.

Well, I guess this explains his "massive panda eyes" in the promo pictures.

I love JCW.while he is fantastic in action I think he excels in the emotional scenes, those eyes!! They are so expressive.
Hope he chooses a romantic comedy for his next role.
I liked Yoo na in Prime minster and I but she looks like she has lost a lot of weight since--was it for this role? he hands look so delicate.
Cant wait for K2:)

Well idol or not, as long as they give their best and decent acts towards their characters, I have no problem at all. In fact, Seo In Guk(which he is an acting idol, but I'm afraid he can no longer be called idol though) is the best example of acting idol that you can get in South Korea. No other idols act so camouflage like him, which is why I do not hold any prejudices towards an acting idol, as long as they work hard and gives their best though.
I have liked Ji Chang Wook in Healer, and he is decent in emotional acting too. Haha but still the crown goes to Seo In Guk, my number bias he he he.
Old the best to you Ji Chang Wook!
