Jealousy Incarnate: Episode 6

So much fun! I spent this hour laughing out loud at Na-ri and Hwa-shin’s antics, and I’m so pleased that Jealousy Incarnate is turning out to be as entertaining as I’d hoped after its rocky start. For a show with such a simple plot, it delivers a surprising amount of heart and hilarity in equal measures, and I’m just completely enchanted. I could watch these two chase each other around a hospital room forever.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

When Na-ri expresses interest in Jung-won, Hwa-shin tries to convince her that she’s actually still into him. She turns away from him in her bed and ignores his insistence that she take her time getting over him.

Hwa-shin wakes first in the morning, and he tiptoes to Na-ri’s side of the room to snag one of her juice packets. Na-ri starts to talk in her sleep, telling her boss that she can do a good job. Hwa-shin seems moved, and he pulls her blanket up snugly. He puts a hand on her shoulder, and his touch seems to soothe Na-ri.

Jung-won hops out of the pool to find his mother’s employees waiting for him to sign some paperwork. He says that his mother can handle the hotel without him, but reaches out to sign. Then he remembers that he shouldn’t just sign things without reading them, and says he’ll look the documents over in his office.

Later he complains to Secretary Cha that his mother’s assistant thinks he’s just a figurehead, then berates Secretary Cha for letting them know that he swims here in the mornings. He accuses Secretary Cha of conspiring with his mother’s man to catch him off-guard, and by Cha’s guilty reaction, it looks like he’s nailed it.

Jung-won tells Secretary Cha he’ll forgive him if he finds out where Na-ri got the suit she wore on air. His voice is full of admiration as he says that she looked very retro and sincere, and he’d like to buy her something else from that clothing line.

Na-ri calls PD Oh sounding chipper and energetic, apologizing for being a bit sick the previous evening. She assures him that she’s just fine now, and prepared to go on air tonight. PD Oh just sighs and says that fine, she can come in and face her punishment. She hangs up, elated to have her job back, then she winces when she realizes that he said “punishment.”

Ja-young realizes that she lost an earring in her cat fight with Sung-sook, so she heads back to the station to look for it. She finds the earring, but she stops when she sees a little dog keychain on Na-ri’s locker. It’s exactly the same as a dog keychain she owns, and it must be related to Pal-gang somehow. She calls Na-ri to find out where she got it, but Na-ri’s phone is dead.

Chef Rak runs to the hospital, where Pal-gang’s father has regained consciousness. He tells his friend that Pal-gang is on her way, and to hang in there. Rak notices that Hyung has a piece of paper in his hand and he takes, it, and Hyung whispers a faint “Hwa-shin.”

Hwa-shin overhears Na-ri asking Dr. Geum if she can be released a day early, but Dr. Geum refuses to allow it. She redresses Na-ri’s surgical site, then it’s Hwa-shin’s turn, and he says in all seriousness that he thinks his scar makes him look like a gangster. PFFT.

Dr. Geum is about a thousand percent done with Hwa-shin’s sexist attitude, and she refuses to speak to him, answering his questions as if she’s giving Na-ri post-op instructions. She rips off Hwa-shin’s bandage, calls him “Grandma,” and refuses his request to also be released today. Just to get at him, she says that Na-ri can go home after all.

Chef Rak reads Hyung’s note, and whatever it says seems to upset him. Meanwhile, Pal-gang makes it to her dad’s bedside, and holds his hand while he sleeps.

Sung-sook is on the phone trying to find out which school Pal-gang attends when PD Oh comes and whines that Na-ri is on indefinite suspension, so they need to find someone else to do the weather tonight. Sung-sook snaps at him for interrupting, scaring the poor man half to death.

Nurse Oh delivers Na-ri and Hwa-shin’s medications, then presents Na-ri with a post-op bra. She explains that the pressure helps reduce swelling and pain, and Hwa-shin asks where his post-op bra is. The funniest part is that he’s deadly serious.

Nurse Oh says that they don’t make them for men, and suddenly Hwa-shin is all grouchy over not being treated equally to women. He eyes Na-ri’s bra enviously and urges her to put it on, which makes Na-ri feel a little squicky about it.

Hwa-shin can’t get over not having a bra of his own, and he gets all huffy — if he has breast cancer like women get, he should get the same equipment. He even argues that he needs it more than Na-ri, because he had more tissue removed. He decides to just buy one at the hospital store, and Na-ri laughs in his face.

But Hwa-shin figures that he’s already weird enough, having gotten breast cancer, so he may as well wear the bra. Na-ri can’t argue with that, but she balks when Hwa-shin asks her to go buy it for him. But he turns on the puppy-dog eyes and promises to remember this favor, and Na-ri caves.

Hwa-shin asks for the one with padding (for seemingly no other reason than that Na-ri wants to get herself one, and he’s just that competitive), then he tells her to lock the door so they can figure out his size. He manages this by trying on Na-ri’s bra, and Na-ri can’t even bring herself to look. Out in the hallway, Nurse Oh happens by as they’re talking about locking the door and doing it quickly, and assumes they’re getting it on.

Na-ri argues that she saw his chest in Thailand and would rather make an educated guess, but Hwa-shin just sits there with her bra on until she finally relents… and cringes, because he’s wearing it backwards. BWAHAHA.

She helps him put in on the right way, while Hwa-shin mutters that he only knows how to take these things off, hee. That makes Na-ri giggle, and she touches his shoulder, which has Hwa-shin shrinking back. No skinship allowed, apparently.

Na-ri backs off and takes her phone off the charger, and she gets a silly idea. She starts recording Hwa-shin trying on the bra, and when he sees her, he starts chasing her around the room trying to grab her phone away. Na-ri barks that she’s doing this because he treats her so badly, insisting that she’s not in love with him anymore.

Hwa-shin pushes Na-ri down on his bed and leans over her, but she slides the phone under her back so that he can’t get it. He orders Na-ri to delete the video, and she says that it depends on his behavior. She struggles when he goes after the phone again, and Hwa-shin sits on her to make her stop.

The both grow still when they realize the position they’re in, and Hwa-shin accuses Na-ri of doing this as a way to cling to him. Oh you are so conceited. He says that she’ll never find a man by exploiting his weaknesses, but he agrees to date her in exchange for the video if she’s that desperate.

He offers to date her for three days, then thirty when Na-ri laughs ruefully. She says that she wants three years, as payback for the three years she liked him. Hwa-shin asks why he would do such a thing, saying that he wouldn’t give her three years even if they were both in it together. You. Absolute. Jerk.

Na-ri cries out that she just wants to be on the receiving end for once, asking if he knows how sad and lonely she was. Hwa-shin leaps off of her, and Na-ri curls up in a tiny ball of hurt. Hwa-shin says softly that they’ll both die the day anyone sees that video, and lies down on the bed next to her. He grumbles that she has bad taste in men — if she had good taste, she’d never have liked him, he says.

Ha, Jung-won forces Secretary Cha to ride in the backseat of the car like a misbehaving child. Secretary Cha whines, but he insists that Jung-won needs to watch a video he found.

Na-ri finally calls Ja-young back, and tells her that the dog keychain on her locker was a gift from her little brother. Ja-young says that the two keychains are a unique set, and asks hesitantly if Na-ri knows Pal-gang. Na-ri replies they live in the same building, and Ja-young anxiously gets Na-ri’s address.

Jung-won arrives at the hospital to see Na-ri, and Secretary Cha insists again that he watch the video. Jung-won finally takes a look and sees Na-ri at her previous job on a home shopping network, selling the suit from the previous evening’s broadcast.

Secretary Cha rattles off everything he learned about Na-ri — before she was a weathercaster, she worked as a home shopping host for two years. This is a video of her first show, and the suit sold out.

Jung-won watches the video on a bench outside the hospital, and Na-ri sneaks up behind him to see what’s got him so engrossed. She’s horrified to see her embarrassing antics on film, and begs Jung-won not to watch any more.

Jung-won adorably says that he really wants to see it, so much that he offers to sponsor her clothes from now on. Na-ri compromises with an offer to recreate the show for him live, and makes him pinky-swear.

She starts out her performance enthusiastically, and Jung-won is positively enchanted. But Na-ri suddenly stops, embarrassed that she remembers the entire speech, and she can’t even face Jung-won. He steps up behind her and grasps her arm, then puts a hand on her shoulder and softly says that she’s worked hard. So sweet.

Na-ri turns sad eyes to Jung-won, and her face crumples. Embarrassed, she runs back into the hospital, and barely makes it around a corner before the tears start. Jung-won’s gentle, encouraging words remind her of her mother, who would wait up for her to come home every night after her home shopping job.

She’d encouraged Na-ri not to give up on her dream to be a news announcer, and though she was very ill, she’d said that she wanted to see her daughter realize her dream before she died. Jung-won follows Na-ri inside and sees her crying, but he doesn’t mention it, and just asks her to lunch.

Up in the hospital room Hwa-shin wonders what’s taking Na-ri so long with his bra. He grabs a baseball cap and ventures downstairs to look for her, and stops for a coffee for himself.

He spots news anchor Hye-won from the station and tries to hide, but Nurse Oh sees him with the forbidden coffee and stops him. Hwa-shin silently begs her to keep her voice down, but it’s too late, and Hye-won has spotted him.

They sit to chat, and Hye-won clocks Hwa-shin’s twitchy nervousness. She asks why he’s here, and he quickly fibs that he got Dengue Fever in Thailand. Hye-won leans over to feel him for a fever, which is the exact moment that Na-ri and Jung-won enter the cafeteria. Na-ri sees the cozy-looking scene and snarls, and luckily Jung-won doesn’t notice his friend sitting nearby.

Hwa-shin starts criticizing Hye-won’s on-air performance from the previous day, nitpicking her word choice. She frowns, but takes the criticism as advice, and he says that if she’s thankful she’ll keep their meeting here a secret.

Hwa-shin tries to hide his face when he sees Jung-won and Na-ri waiting for an elevator, and he listens as Jung-won asks about the “grandma” in Na-ri’s room. Na-ri sees him there with Hye-won and scoffs, and adds that that “grandma” likes rich women. Hee.

Hye-won asks Hwa-shin if he’d like to meet her father, who happens to be one of the station bigwigs. That makes him smile, which Na-ri sees, and she misinterprets things again. She sends Jung-won on his way, and heads back their room with Hwa-shin’s bra.

He ignores the bra and asks if Na-ri is interested in Jung-won, and Na-ri quips that she doesn’t know how such a nice guy is friends with rude, bad-mannered Hwa-shin. Hwa-shin just snaps back that he’s very nice to women he likes.

Na-ri packs up her things to go home, and Hwa-shin objects when she packs the hospital-issue sippy-cup. Hwa-shin calls her petty, and she retorts that it’s always petty when things are over between a man and woman. She tells him that her one-sided love is definitely over now, and asks him to pretend he doesn’t know her at work.

She turns to make her grand exit, and when Hwa-shin calls her back, she tells him to let her go. He calls out, “Take that off before you go,” and dammit, she’s still wearing her hospital gown. So much for her Grand Dramatic Flounce.

Hwa-shin’s mother and Jung-won’s mother arrive together at the airport after a Paris shopping spree, and Jung-won comes to welcome them home. They both call him “son,” and Jung-won gives the bouquet of flowers he brought to Hwa-shin’s mom.

Ja-young shows up at Na-ri’s building, but nobody answers the door when she knocks at Pal-gang’s place.

On the drive home, Jung-won asks Hwa-shin’s mom if Hwa-shin ever came home while he was stationed in Thailand. She says angrily that she told him to stay there, get married, and never come back, because he’s no longer her son. Jung-won’s mom asks how things are going with Soo-jung, but Jung-won stays silent and lets the two ladies bicker.

Hwa-shin sits alone in his now-empty hospital room, remembering Na-ri’s final words that her one-sided love is now truly finished. He gets a call, and on the other line is his brother, who speaks weakly while a nurse holds the phone for him.

He tells Hwa-shin that he misses him, then he flat-lines. Hwa-shin is stunned, and he tries to call his brother back while the doctors frantically work to resuscitate him.

Chef Rak gets the news, and Ja-young watches him run to his car and speed away. In class, Dae-goo’s phone rings, and he holds the phone to Pal-gang’s ear while her face goes white. She runs out of class, with loyal Dae-goo and Chi-yeol right on her heels.

She stops short to see Sung-sook in the hall, having tracked down her school. Pal-gang just says that she doesn’t have a mom, and Sung-sook tries to explain that she’s been waiting until Pal-gang goes to college to live with her. Pal-gang just runs past her without another word.

Hwa-shin calls Hyung’s number over and over, crying and saying the words he didn’t get to say: “I miss you, too.” Just as everyone arrives at the hospital, Pal-gang’s father is pronounced dead.

Jung-won takes the ladies to Hwa-shin’s mother’s house, the same home where Hwa-shin’s been staying. No sooner do they step inside than the phone rings, and Hwa-shin’s mother receives the news that her eldest son has died.

The family gathers in a funeral room, and Sung-sook and Ja-young find themselves alone together. Sung-sook says that Ja-young can leave since she’s not Pal-gang’s real mother, and Ja-young snaps back that Sung-sook has no right to say that, when she hasn’t even cried for the loss of her ex-husband.

Jung-won helps Hwa-shin’s mother into the funeral room, and she collapses to the floor in grief. Na-ri arrives, having been notified by Chi-yeol, and Hwa-shin runs into the room a few seconds later. She’s surprised to see him here, but he only has eyes for the photograph of his brother.

Hwa-shin’s mother orders Sung-sook and Ja-young out of the room, shoving them against the wall and screaming that they abandoned Pal-gang and her son. She turns on Hwa-shin and says that his brother wouldn’t want him here, but Hwa-shin’s eyes never leave his brother’s picture, and he sees his hyung smiling at him.

We see Hyung’s dream again, where he’d been surrounded by those he loved. They lead him into the light, and they all dance together in a joyous celebration of life.

Chef Rak looks at the note from Hyung again, which says that he wanted Pal-gang to be raised by Ja-young. He’s confused that her father didn’t want her to go to her biological mother, but he barely has time to think about it when Sung-sook and Ja-young approach, and Ja-young slaps him hard.

Hwa-shin finds a private room to change his shirt, and his mother enters and sees him wearing the post-op bra. She completely flips out, and she starts hitting him and calling him a pervert. Hwa-shin struggles to put on a shirt while his mother screams and beats him, yelling that he should have died instead of his brother.

She attacks Hwa-shin with a serving tray, and chases him out into the room in front of everyone. Luckily he’s got the shirt mostly on by now, and he grabs the tray to shield himself.

Things calm down, and Na-ri helps serve food and drinks to the funeral visitors. She smiles at something on her phone, and wishes strength to Hwa-shin. Jung-won finds her and she expresses surprise that Hwa-shin is Pal-gang’s uncle, and asks if he wants to see something on her phone, about Hwa-shin.

Exhausted, Hwa-shin steps into the room and sinks to the floor. He sees Na-ri and Jung-won laughing at something on her phone, and he assumes that she’s showing Jung-won the video of him trying on the bra. He starts to angry-cry, wailing internally that if there’s a God, then why would He take his brother? He cries, “I’m the one who deserves to die. Take me instead. I’ll take Pyo Na-ri with me, too. Please give me my brother back. Please bring my brother back to life!”

COMMENTS

I never would have imagined a show could get so much mileage out of a guy wearing a bra, but the way Jealousy Incarnate pushes situations beyond the point where most shows would drop a gag really works in this case. It’s such a ridiculous circumstance, though Hwa-shin is probably right that it won’t hurt for him to wear it to promote healing, so it makes sense even while it’s hilarious. But then, to take something that’s been played for laughs for the entire episode, and have it turn into a source of anguish, was just frankly brilliant. Hwa-shin hasn’t got much in life besides his pride, and he’s really dealing with this breast cancer pretty well, considering that he has no support system at all. He’s going through this all alone, and to have his mother see him wearing a bra was such a poignant moment. He’s already the black sheep of the family, if not the outright villain, and now he’s stuck between telling them about his cancer, or having them think he’s a weirdo. I just find it so entertaining for the show to use the exact same situation to play for laughs, then for tears, and have both be equally effective.

I just adore that a show with such a straightforward plot manages to deliver so much, and it’s all due to the incredibly relatable characters. Even the smallest characters (Dae-goo, for instance) are so well-acted that they never feel one-dimensional — you can see them reacting even when they aren’t the main focus of the scene, and it allows their characters to breathe and live. Even when we’re still learning how everyone relates to everyone else, they all feel so natural and fully realized, which for me, makes up for a lack of a complicated plot. I don’t even mind that the actual story is simple, when the characters are so rich and interesting.

I worried at first that Jung-won would be bland and boring, but I think that he’s really just very closed-off around everyone but Hwa-shin. It doesn’t feel like a coping mechanism, though — more like an instinctive conservation of energy, like he just doesn’t really feel the need to emote around anyone else. You can see him making the effort to break out of that when he’s around Na-ri, the way he makes strong eye contact and really listens to her when she talks. He’s not a guy who’s going to be flashy in his affections, but more of a steady, constant presence. Flashy is very attractive, but strong and reliable are also wonderful qualities to possess.

On the other hand, for a guy who professes not to like Na-ri one tiny bit, Hwa-shin sure does care a lot about what she thinks. It’s kind of endearing how grumpy it makes him to see her with Jung-won, and the poor doofus has no idea why. I have a feeling that Na-ri’s crush wasn’t entirely unrequited back when they used to work together, but more a case of Hwa-shin being so self-absorbed that it literally never occurred to him that he had feelings for her. But we know that he remembers her slighting him a couple of times, and there’s really no reason for him to remember those incidents, unless it’s because they hurt his feelings. It’s very telling that he’s always the one to mention Na-ri’s supposed crush on him first, and especially how quick he was to agree to date her when he assumed that’s why she took the video of him in the bra. I love how he keeps telling Na-ri that she’s not over him, as if he’s trying hard to convince her not to be over him. He’s projecting all over the place, and it’s as hilarious as it is head-shaking.

Na-ri is my clear favorite though — I just love everything about her character. She’s subservient, but stands up for herself when it counts, and never lets anyone walk over her unless she chooses to let them. She’s willing to do whatever she can to advance her career, but at the same time she has a sense of pride. I adore how willingly she gets in Hwa-shin’s face when he’s wrong, and that she’s not ashamed to confess that she liked him. She owns her feelings and never holds things in, even when it’s something embarrassing to admit. That only comes from having a spine of steel, and a very impressive sense of personal worth. Na-ri may not seem like it when you first meet her, but she’s one of the strongest female characters I’ve seen in a long time, precisely because she knows when it’s better to bend.

It’s also what makes her such a great counterpoint for Hwa-shin, who makes pride the most important feature of every interaction. He’s practically nothing BUT pride at this point, but it falls on deaf ears with Na-ri, because while she has pride, she knows it’s not the most important thing. Na-ri’s strength is that she knows when to let go of her pride, and roll with the punches. Hwa-shin has a lot to learn from Na-ri, if only he’ll let himself relax and rely on someone else for a change.

I am experiencing real life heartbreak over the fact that the second lead might not get the girl. The strongest second lead syndrome i have ever had watching Kdrama for a long time.

I'm not one for second lead syndrome but Jun Won is ridiculously appealing. Though perhaps the introduction of a fiance (even if arranged) will dampen my affections?

Me tooooo! I love the second lead so much that I am having a difficult time continuing with the show considering the romance will fall to the first lead. Don't get me wrong, I looove Jo Jung-Suk. He is doing a masterful job. It's just that Go Kyung-pyo is winning my heart with his steady gaze, luscious voice, and mature, yet funny character.

You are not the only one, I was feeling sad for Hwa Shin, he had a triple blow this epidode
1. With his brother leaving HS a last message the hyung missed him.
2. Then realized those were hyung's last words ...
3. Mum mistaken him as a pervert with the "rehab" bra

I thought this man must be so heart broken, then that voiceover ... " as a bonus I will take Pyo Na Ri with me" ... he is totally fine!

I totally agree with comments about brilliance of combining anguished moment with hilarity. I find this drama my surprise sleeper - my favorite drama in a long while. Grown up perspectives on life and serious issues, but very light and wonderfully humorous at same time. Who would have thought.. .....

And Jo Jun Seok - just incredible role for him, and he is hitting it our of the park

This drama is stealing my heart. The actors are top notch and the writing -- while not incredibly plot driven -- balances deep and comedic moments well.

I find Hwa Shin's pettiness hilarious. However, I am not sure I want Pyo Na-Ri saddled with him. Not only is their dynamic almost so antagonistic that it reads more brother/sister to me, but the price for Hwa Shin's affection seems too costly for someone who is already a surrogate parent and attempting to make her mark in competitive field. I too much prefer Jung-won's attentiveness and steadfastness for someone as earnest and deserving as Pyo Na-Ri. I know that this is setting myself up for disappointment, but I can't help it. :)

I agree with you 100%. As hilarious as I find Hwa Shin I don't want Pyo Na-Ri to end up with him right now. He's too much of a man-child tbh. She deserves better.

I think the fun part will be watching him grow into a man that deserves her. GF says this all the time, and I think it's really true, that a character who starts out awesome and stays awesome throughout a drama is fine and everything, but the really touching moments come from characters who start out flawed but learn from their mistakes and become the best versions of themselves by the end. I have total faith that Hwa Shin is going to go down that road. He'll have some tough lessons along the way, but he earned them.

Jung-won is definitely the better guy for Pyo Na-Ri right now, but I'm rooting for Hwa Shin to undergo A LOT of growth and maybe a three year crush of his own. I like Jung-won, but Hwa Shin is so entertaining, I can't help rooting for him and Na-Ri.

This drama is so bizarre and entertaining. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry this episode. Hwa shin is such a joker. When his mum caught him with that bra at the funeral i just lost it. And that ending :'D I was laughing so hard. His face and monologue just killed me "as a bonus i'll take Pyo Na Ri with me" HAHAHAHA!!! He is so twisted. I never thought I would like this drama so much.

omg, TWISTED is the perfect word and I apply it to the writer!
Someone is twisted enough to think up this petty narcissist for our entertainment and will probably make us love him more than Jung Won by the end! In that context, "I'll take Pyo Na Ri with me" is just off the charts wacko *bows down allllll the way*

I know I'm going to rot in hell for laughing my head off at those last minutes (while still wiping away my tears over hyung's death). #noregrets ?

I'm sad the hospital hijinks are over already, those were the best scenes so far and the doctor and the nurse are just jjang. I could watch Hwa-shin and Na-ri bicker in their pink hospital gowns for hours.

Halmoni HS being so petty and such a pain in the butt gives me life, JJS is totally owning this role and probably the reason I don't have SLS (yet). JW does swoony stuff but still seems like any other typical second lead for now. Btw him being 5 years older than Na-ri is just pffft, it's like RJY being the oppa to HWE in LR all over again. ?
And this love triangle strangely reminds me of the one in Best Love, YKS was perfect but Chajumma was love. Hehe.

Same on what you said about Best Love. Not hard to ignore my SLS.

I can accept GKP as 5 years old than GHJ, probably because she's such a baby face. With Joon Yeol, HWE was only 1 year older so it's not that strange for him to be her oppa, but 7 years was ridiculous. JW is the textbook second lead though. So I can't help feeling like he's checking his actions off an invisible list. He does it extremely well, though!

Now that you mention it, you're right, it's definitely got those Best Love vibes - the tears-of-laughter/pain/everything-running-down-your-face wacky scenarios, the hidden meaning of mundane everyday objects ... and bra competitions instead of "Panties!!"

Too bad we can't see weathercaster Pyo Na Ri on our screens every day of the week!

When I first tried to get into this kdrama, I has some trouble. Now I wonder what kept me so long from just falling head first in love with it?

Na-ri is such an enjoyable character, and Hwa-shin you are just waiting for him to slip and fall on his face. They are just so evenly, but also so miss-matched that they work together. I was very, very pleasantly surprised about the male breast cancer aspect. I do not recall this ever being part of any kdrama I have seen to date. The manner in which it and the characters are being handled is just so spot on. Hwa-shin is such a jerk with it until now, or the end of this episode, when him mom finds his 'pink thingie,' and soooo mis-understands. Oh, the double anguish, no triple anguish he has at this point, 1. breast cancer - 2. brother's death - 3. mom's misconception.

Hopefully this will help all at large to realize that breast cancer is not respective of gender. It can and does strike male as well as female. For those who might remember the actor Richard Roundtree ("Shaft"), he had it in real life.

Nurse is Park Jin Joo.

Her filmography that I have seen:
Modern Farmer
Angel Eyes
Unemployed Romance

I'd like to watch these dramas and movies with her:
High Kick! 3
Operation Proposal
Her Lively Heels
My Unfortunate Boyfriend
Sunny

She's an amazing actress in my book. I'm glad Modern Farmer cast is so busy right now. They are doing well. I hope she's in this drama longer. Her reactions are life.

I freaking love this show! It's funny and touching, with never a dull moment. I don't have 2nd lead syndrome at all since no matter how sweet he is, there is a 10 year age difference that I just don't buy. Plus I truly think Pyo Na Ri would have much more fun in life with a bit of an opposite personality in Hwa Shin, once he comes to his senses. What a delightful drama!

I love the minute details in this drama. In this episode, there's the cat sound during the section when Hwa Shin was asking Na Ri to buy him a bra. It was so apt; Lollypip described him as flashing puppy eyes, but the way he asked Nari was still so haughty that a cat would be a more apt analogy. XD

Plenty of heartbreak to be had, too. That phone call from the brother. That man-bra scene during the wake. Goodness, I was weeping so hard during that scene; I mean, I know how much it sucks to be a patient without a guardian, but I can't imagine how much more so when you undergo surgery without anyone to support you. I mean, Hwa Shin had no one but Pyo Na Ri. Then the mother had to see his man-bra and was totally unaware that her despised son actually went through such an ordeal that she ended up hurting Hwa Shin in more ways than one. Then there was Hwa Shin, clutching the tray to protect the tattered shreds of his pride. It was just painful to watch. Like Lollypip said, the difference in emotions commanded by the two instances Hwa Shin was seen wearing the man-bra was so stark, it was brilliant.

And yes, people, we can laugh and cry at the same time during that last scene. "Why take my brother, God? You should have taken me instead!" Looks over to Na Ri and Jung Won, who were laughing while watching something which I'm pretty sure isn't his hospital video, "As a bonus, I'll take Pyo Na Ri with me!" Hwa Shin was so heartbreaking and theatrically vengeful at the same time. Perfect.

And I particularly liked that quiet moment when they were on the same bed, with Na Ri curled up in a fetal position with hurt and Hwa Shin leaning back looking at her.

Why do I feel like the crush is not exactly unrequited? Je Su Ho's bro called it in episode 1: Hwa Shin wouldn't have remembered Na Ri if he weren't affected. Also, that ID lace bit. He seemed genuinely upset that Na Ri didn't take the ID lace that he offered.

I already feel so bad for Jung Won since we already all know where the story is going, but I expected it anyway when I signed up for this drama. How we get to that point, I would imagine, would be a hilarious ride and probably a huge blow to HS ego once he admits that he is truly in love with Na-ri.

It's an uncomplicated plot but the characters are adding so much to the story. I don't remember laughing/crying so much especially the funeral scene - while highly inappropriate was pure comedic genius.

HOW DOES THIS DRAMA EXIST? I'd been reading about it being uneven and not drawing people in initially, which is why I was hesitant to check it out, but I was completely hooked from the first episode. And having just marathoned all six aired episodes, my obsession hasn't dwindled at all.

I've never yet watched a drama like this before (ah, famous last words). The dark, satirical tone, with the unexpected levity- which, after all, is the only way we can deal with subjects like breast cancer, or death. Something that seems completely unexpected, unreal, or is utterly beyond human comprehension. This show takes the petty moments, the insane absurdities of everyday living, things that people use to get by, their idiosyncrasies and irrationalities and quirks and sort of elevates them to the point of a grand narrative. The absurdist tinge to this drama is extremely high. The relationships and dynamics are all confused and confusing (I still haven't figured out whether Chi-Yeol is Na-Ri's real dongsaeng or not, and if so, why does it seem he has a romantic interest in her), which is how relationships are at the best of times, and I love that they're presented as such. Odd living arrangements, odd work arrangements, populated by people who stand by each other or barely get along and switch depending on their mood, inclinations, or need. I love its rollercoaster of emotions, and the raw quality it has to it, where it doesn't follow any sort of method-narrative sequence, it's saddest scenes are the funniest, the most absurd scenes presented with the straightest of faces, it plays around with gender and social conventions almost as a matter of fact. It's a bit like reading asofterworld comic in drama format.

And yet, despite the over-the-top comedic tones, its incredibly subtle. Its quiet moments are equally well done, its rivalries strong, its friendships stronger. No one is particularly a god or a villain. No one is the hero of the story, sometimes people aren't even the heroes of their own stories in this. What I absolutely loved in that phonecall between Hwa Shin and Jung Won in Episode 5 is that Hwa Shin expected Jung Won to lie-- to not mention the "secret" of Nari's hospital visit and his part in it, which isn't even a secret really, but being something that they would both understand, pertaining to someone they both know, something that mattered in particular to Jung Won, and so not telling Haw Shin about it would be lying by ommission in a relationship like theirs. Hwa Shin expected him to lie and created conditions to excuse him, to forgive him beforehand, emphasizing to himself how he was lying as well (thorough the metaphorical lucrative investment), and so it was only fair that they both keep secrets... and then Jung Won told him the truth anyway.

reply

Required fields are marked *

And you could see in Haw Shin's expression how he was so incredibly relieved and burdened. That even though he had been pretending till then that it didn't really matter, that they were both keeping secrets and so it was okay, it did matter that Jung Won so casually told him the truth, didn't think to hide. That he had a moment of shaking his head at himself for having thought otherwise even for a second. And burdened because then he- Hwa Shin- was the only one keeping secrets.

So many scenes in this drama are loaded with so many underlying, unsaid moments, or moments where entire conversations are carried out where what is being spoken about is never spoken about at all; like the whole bra scene, which is comedic in conception, but in execution also a counterpoint to Hwa Shin's crippling insecurities about what it means to be a man with breast cancer, that wild vaccilation between doing something utterly feminized (wearing a bra) in order to protect his masculinity (the shape/firmness of his chest), that back-and-forth between wanting to be validated and desired as a man, and the surity that that is impossible, and the scene with his mother which is both comedic and excruciatingly sad.

This is a good time to be alive in dramaland. That is all.

@bbstl: That's so nice of you to say! I really do love Hwa Shin because he's such a contradictory person in general. He's like the voice in your head personified, where one moment you're convinced you look great and the next that you look ugly and you've never looked good in your life. Where one moment you're anticipating something and the next where you're convinced everything will end in disaster. I love Jung Won as well because GKP is playing him so well, I like his unreadable, curious gaze whenever he looks at Nari, like he's trying to figure her- or himself- out. And I love their friendship to pieces. And Pyo Nari is, of course, stealing the show, because she's utterly relatable, she deals with little humiliations of her own accord but keeps her eyes on what she wants. She states out loud what most of us only think ("I want to see that man and make him regret rejecting me.") Basically, everything is so great!

Beautifully, powerfully written, @Zoe. Wow. Are you a professional writer? I'm asking because I am and I think you are too. If not, you should be! Amazing stuff. Thank you so much for sharing!

@lunatic4kd

Definitely not a professional writer, haha, maybe an amateur overanalyzer? I do enjoy writing though, I've even written fanfic, which of course no one would admit to and counts nowhere but is indeed very, very fun ^^ But thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate them!

Yes, this drama is absolutely incredible and the actors are all on-point! I just appreciate dramas which bring so much to the table and leave scope for analysis that goes beyond a what-will-happen-next (in fact, it's kind of impossible to say what will happen next in this, which too I love.) I'm just very interested in their narrative choices; like with the two announcers, both of whom hate each other, but their comic joint breakdown scene also highlighted how much only they can understand the other and the humiliations that they're ignoring on a daily basis, knowing that they're caricatures for everyone in the office, their professionalism irrelevant, their history a punchline.

Haha, the other drama currently putting me in overanalysis mode is Scarlet Heart, which I admittedly seem to have gone crazy over, and is my current addiction. I really love Moonlight, and the direction and acting is fantastic, while SH has made some really odd choices, but there's no accounting for engagement or investment I guess! Scarlet Heart makes me want to analyze each character and sequence and relationship and I find its narrative choices incredibly interesting. Each individual dynamic and the neutral word-of-god presentation is intriguing for me. This drama season is so good, I hope it lasts (and doesn't falter!)

I'm in love with this show. This drama delivers both comedy and romance flawlessly. The script is not perfect but has one of the impressively well thought-out and creative lines I've seen and the director and actors deliver them perfectly, no matter how wacky or subtle they need to be.

I had high expectations for this show and it has surpassed my already high expectations in terms of how invested I would become in this show.

I really can't choose between Hwa-shin and Jung-won right now. I heard Na-ri will be "two-timing" through the end of this show and the men will beg her to do so. I'm just going to sit tight and enjoy everything they do to win Na-ri's love alongside her.

I have to say, Go Jung-won will be remembered as one of the strongest second male lead in k-dramaland. He's that good.

I think he is vital to the story because even the drama's name is jealousy incarnate. So, one of our OTP needs to be jealous. He is also the complete opposite of hwa shin concerning their feelings towards na ri. Even though both of them like her, hwa shin is in complete denial about his feeling towards her because of his self absorption whereas jung won openly shows his feelings to her. I think he is required for us to see this dynamic and also, of course for hwa shin to be jealous.

✅ I love how I actually do not feel the burden to have to choose between Hwashin and Jung won. It's not a case of who gets the girl but rather, who the girl wants.
✅ I 've said this before and I'll say it again, the soundtrack of this drama is killer.
✅ When you know that the writing is good, the directing has improved and the editing is fine only means they all drank the same Kool-aid.
✅ The casting director needs to be complimented. Every single actor on this show gives life to its character which makes it a show that's so entertaining to watch.
✅ This show has the right balance of quirky and cute which does not border on insanely stupid.
✅ It makes the dark, heavy and gloomy plot seem like cotton candy.
✅ Between fart exchanges, slaps on the face, a life threatening disease, home tv shopping, dysfunctional family ties, some PPL, a man in a bra, being beaten by a silver tray, a timely death and relationship hijinks, it was a good day to appreaciate life.

I never thought of it that way, but what you said is absolutely true. It's not always okay to be so hot-headed that you don't realize what is good for you. i have always admired strong female characters but many- a- times they go overboard and impractical in trying to prove their strength. Na Ri really is admirable for knowing exactly what she should and should not do (it's just lucky that her decisions give us good fodder for laughter).

And the last scene. That was just comedy gold. Never have I ever almost been on the verge of crying and instead burst out laughing. :D

I felt so bad for him I was still thinking about the physical pain of the attack in the very last scene when he had to pile the grief of his brother's death on top of his multiple agonies. And I missed that last funny line until reading it here in DramaBeans!
There is absolutely no other actor than Jo Jung-suk who could play this role as perfectly!

I loved this episode. It was super fun. I am looking forward to this show nowadays. I feel like i could watch it again and not feel bored at all.

I felt really glad that hwa shin's brother told him he missed him before he died. Dealing with deaths of your loved ones are hard and if they die without you being able to resolve things with them, it's even more hard. You ll feel guilty and there is literally nothing you could do about it. And at one point, you ll just decide that you don't mind carrying it around anymore. And that's kind of the saddest thing ever. But, since Hwa shin's brother told him he missed him, it means that clearly had no hard feelings towards him. And this will help him move on.

I don't think what lollipip says is strictly correct - the ending bra scene was not used to highlight HS's anguish but just pure dark humour- it was hilarious, in a very inappropriate way which makes it even more funny, and the show pushes it more to have Jung won and na ri giggling at a funeral over some stupid video and then have HS exclaim his sadness in some overwrought ridiculous melodrama form of which he is the star. LOL this shows humour is so strange (I mean the dying scene is one where everyone wears white and dances happily- and don't get me started on the very set up of having an ex wife and an ex ex wife omg ) and not everyone's cup of tea but I'm surprisingly enjoying it so far !!!

I LOVED YOUR RECAP!! I too think that Hwa Shin did have some feelings for her in the past, but the flash backs don't give us enough evidence to think so. That scene when his mom was hitting him hurts me. I bawled my eyes out during the last 10 minutes.

What irk me about some of the characters here:-
a. Hwa Shin's mom - How can she condemned one child for another, even though yes, that child did wrong. Did she find HS in the gutter to throw "He's not my son anymore" so carelessly. And there the proof that parents don't love their kids equally. I don't think she even love her eldest son if she can go shopping oversea.

b. Hwa Shin's bro - Your last word is "I miss you" when all you did was run away and stay in hiding after what happened. If you didn't do it, shouldn't you be fighting for your right? You got you daughter and mom on your side. Fight for them at the very least.

c. Pal-gang - Well, she annoyed me every time she's on the screen. I should feel sorry for her but her attitude in my opinion is worst that HS. If she's trying to act aloof, it's not working.

If I'm not wrong HS's mum went overseas before his son fell down and have a coma in the hospital? Nobody had informed her of this/she did not know where they are staying etc or smth like that...

Is it just me? I feel like I dislike HS so much although I know he is funny to wear the bra n such...I like 2nd lead guy so much in this show too....

About the 2 ex sister in laws and their daughter....I dunno why I dislike any scenes on them...the catfight and quarrel just turned me off.....

I'm sorry but this story is turning out to be something everyone knows...where Hwa shin would give his consent to his friend to date Na Ri, but later realises he loves her, and Na Ri would in turn realize she never stopped loving him, and they'll go back to each other.

I'm not enjoying this drama to be honest. Why can't the storyline be different for a change?
why must the one who sincerely loves the girl and isn't afraid to say and show it have to lose to the one who's proud. Why must the second guy get hurt and betrayed by the two of them, because as far as I'm concerned, they are both deceiving him.

later on Hwa Shin's excuse for pushing Na Ri away would be that he didn't feel he was good enough for her because of what he did to his brother.

please, who needs all these sob stories?

Drama writers, do something new and different for once.

I'm dyying for the day smth diff truly happens in a drama.. same-gender romance, for one.. an actual OT3, for another xD Both very rare situations & usually only hinted at, at best.. still, I love to "dare to dream " ;P
