Uncontrollably Fond: Episode 10

We are defined by the choices we make, and their repercussions shape our lives and the lives of those around us. In a single moment, a life can be altered for better or worse, in the aftermath of just one wrong choice. But does that one wrong choice make someone a bad person? Or does it matter more what happens afterward, whether the person truly regrets and atones, or if they just go on, never caring about the consequences of their actions?

EPISODE 10 RECAP

As he’s getting ready for the K-pop festival, Joon-young overhears Gook-young talking to Ajusshi on the phone trying to convince Joon-young’s mother to come to the event. She’s refusing to attend, no matter how important it is to Joon-young, no matter how many important people will be there.

Joon-young hides his disappointment, but he perks up when his stylist says that Eul is here, even though he told her not to come. He hides his face and goes to find her, but he’s surprised to see her confronting Assemblyman Choi and Haru. He watches as the assemblyman offers Eul money to pay her back for her ruined memorial food, and he can’t stand it anymore.

He strides over to them and says that Assemblyman Choi should apologize first, grabbing the money and angrily throwing it to the ground. Choi frowns and says that Joon-young should apologize first, for interrupting their conversation. Joon-young says that he only asked the assemblyman to admit his mistake and ask for forgiveness.

Assemblyman Choi scoffs at the idea of apologizing for the actions of a stray kitten, but Joon-young just repeats himself: “Admit your mistake, and ask for forgiveness.” I don’t think he’s talking about the cat anymore.

Assemblyman Choi says that he was wrong about Joon-young, and even criticizes Joon-young’s parents for raising him wrong. He says he wasted his time waiting for Joon-young, unable to throw away that law book he was going to give him, but now sees that Joon-young has turned into a disappointment. Joon-young fumes, but remains silent.

Assemblyman Choi leads Haru away, and Joon-young turns on Eul, angry that she came here when he said not to. He yells even louder when she stoops to pick up the money on the ground, but she ignores him and sighs that she should have asked for more. Joon-young takes the money from her pocket and rips it up, and when she bends to pick up the shreds, he really loses his temper and asks if she’s a beggar.

Eul finally barks back at him, saying that yes, she’s a beggar — he knows that about her. He lets go of her arm and she crouches to pick up the money, telling him to mind his own business. He turns and goes back inside, leaving Eul there on the ground, scrounging for scraps of cash.

Joon-young calls his mother from Gook-young’s phone and she answers by yelling that she won’t go to the ceremony no matter what. But awww, she’s actually in the restroom all fixed up pretty, but scared to death to go in.

She stops when she hears Joon-young’s voice, asking what he did so wrong. Was becoming a celebrity instead of a prosecutor so terrible? He raises his voice, saying that she’s hated him for five years and disowned him — was what he did that bad?

He yells that he believes a prosecutor should always tell the truth, punish wrongdoers, and help the innocent. But he’s not like that — he screams that he’s told her dozens of times that he’s not qualified to be a prosecutor. He’s nearly in tears as he says that if he became a prosecutor, poor people like her would suffer.

This time Mom argues back, saying that of course he’s qualified. He even saved that girl from the school bullies, and got suspended for it. She slowly asks if he feels that way because she used to work in a bar, or because she stole meat once when he was a kid.

Calmer now, Joon-young says that she shouldn’t come, and he’ll refuse the award on her behalf. It sounds harsh, but it’s obvious that his intent is to let her off the hook if she feels that badly about it. He hangs up and Mom looks at herself in the mirror, and with a shaking hand, wipes off her lipstick.

Joon-young undresses and prepares to leave, but Gook-young stops him. Considering the people that are here at this festival, pulling a no-show could be professional suicide for Joon-young, but Gook-young has no idea how little that matters anymore.

One hundred percent done with this day, Joon-young screams at Gook-young to move. Even the news that President Namgoong just collapsed doesn’t move him — he just says to take him to the hospital, and leaves.

He goes looking for Eul and calls her when she’s not in the venue, but she doesn’t answer. Meanwhile Ji-tae’s mother isn’t feeling well, so Assemblyman Choi and Haru get ready to take her home, not that Haru is happy about it. Choi loads his wife and daughter in their car and says he’s staying, since it would look bad if the whole family left.

As he leans down to kiss his wife goodbye, Joon-young’s mother walks in front of their car. Assemblyman Choi sends his family off and doesn’t see her. Nearby, Eul hangs her head in her car and avoids Joon-young’s calls until another driver honks at her.

She looks up to move her car, and right in front of her is the source of all her problems… Assemblyman Choi. He’s on the phone, and the fact that he’s smiling and laughing just adds salt to Eul’s wounds, and she’s overcome by a memory of her father.

He’d been so proud of Eul, beaming over her report card, happy that she’d risen nearly eighty places in class ranking. Eul had preened and Dad crowed, while little Jik just rolled his eyes. When Eul asks for a treat, Jik tattles on her — she’d actually fallen in rank and altered her report card. Dad had motioned her closer and grabbed her face, and Eul had aegyo’d for him in a desperate bid for forgiveness.

Eul next remembers her father lying broken in the street, his killer speeding away, and how Assemblyman Choi had gotten an innocent person to lie about causing the accident. Her father had died, and never seen justice.

Now Eul sees the man who lied about her father’s true killer right there in her headlights, and it’s almost like she goes on autopilot. She hits the gas and aims the car at Assemblyman Choi, her face a mask of calm.

Joon-young sees the car heading for Assemblyman Choi, and realizes it’s Eul at the wheel. He runs and pushes the man out of the car’s path, but not before he gets a good look at Eul’s face. Eul yanks the wheel to the side at the last second, and her van smashes into a column.

Joon-young is injured in the fall, but he shakes off Assemblyman Choi’s hand to go to Eul, and the sight of her bloodied and unconscious terrifies him. He carries her to the hospital, screaming desperately for a doctor.

Haru acts like a complete brat on the way home, angry at missing the festival. Her mother gets a call that her husband was nearly hit by a car but Joon-young saved him, and when Ji-tae gets the news he’s struck silent with shock.

Assemblyman Choi is fine physically but his his mind is preoccupied trying to figure out Eul’s behavior, wondering if spilled soju warranted such rage. He tells his aide to call the police and tell them it was just an accident, in order to let her off the hook.

Joon-young accepts treatment for his injured shoulder, and he’s confused when Ji-tae comes to see him, looking very different from the scruffy man he knows. Ji-tae formally introduces himself with his real name and business card, and thanks Joon-young stiffly for saving Assemblyman Choi.

Ji-tae is honest, explaining that Assemblyman Choi is his father, which is why he gave up on Eul. Joon-young is surprised, but he’s not interested in discussing this, and he rips out his IV and leaves the room.

He goes to Eul’s room, where she’s lying still unconscious and covered in bandages. He holds her hand, feeling guilty for leaving her in anger earlier tonight, and he apologizes over and over.

As Eul is recuperating, she takes a call from Jik, who thinks she’s been working around the clock on editing. He turns the tables on her and demands photos of her eating three meals a day, hee. As he hangs up, he approaches Haru in a nearby playground to get his cat back, but she shakes her head that it’s lost.

Jik grabs the chains of the swing she’s sitting on and yanks her close to his face, flustering her, and asks if she got rid of the kitten. Haru hotly denies it, then his close proximity has her blurting out, “Do you know you’re really handsome?” Jik just lets go and dumps her on her ass, HA.

Joon-young prepares to take Eul on a trip for a whole month, just the two of them, when she gets out of the hospital. He takes care of everything, even going shopping for pretty lingerie for Eul, though he’s adorably embarrassed and has to give himself a pep-talk just to go inside the store. And awww cute, he gets them a set of couple pajamas.

Eul is nervous as well, and even shyly asks the nurses of she can borrow their makeup. Joon-young gets a scare when she’s not in bed when he arrives, but he finds her in the bathroom, having been startled into smearing her lipstick.

She gets dressed in the clothes he brought, and he zips her into her new coat himself, declaring it perfect. He softly says she looks pretty, and Eul says in return, “Let’s not make it a month. Let’s go for a year. Let’s go for ten years.” Joon-young stares at her intently at the mention of all that time that he doesn’t have, but gets his emotions under wraps and then grins, saying it’s a deal.

Eul throws his words back at him: “If I ask for a kiss, will you hit me?” Joon-young shoots back her answer, “I’ll kill you,” then says this occasion calls for more than a mere peck. He leans down and plants another toe-curling kiss on her, one that goes on for quite a while.

The couple heads down to the parking garage together, where Joon-young leaves Eul to get the car, first pausing to give her his big fluffy scarf. As he reaches his car, he stumbles, and his vision goes blurry. Oh no. He turns pale and slumps to the ground, fighting the darkness, and losing.

While Joon-young is fighting his illness for control, Eul is approached by the police, and she’s arrested for the attempted murder of Assemblyman Choi. She calls out for Joon-young as she’s taken to their car, but he can’t stand or see, and can only lie there, helpless.

By the time Joon-young staggers to his feet, Eul is being driven away. He tries to run after the car but can barely walk, and the last thing Eul sees is Joon-young collapsing to the ground.

He makes his way home, still unsteady on his feet, but determined to do something to help Eul. He calls Gook-young and asks him to find out where Eul’s been taken, and makes his way to his bathroom to take his medicine. By now he looks like he’s hanging onto consciousness by sheer force of will.

He comes out of the bathroom a while later, a little steadier, but only to find that Gook-young has locked him in his bedroom on President Namgoong’s orders, and even set up a couple of guards. They have his phone and are afraid that he’ll go and do something truly irreparable, and refuse to let him out. WHAT. Seriously, you can’t just lock up someone like that.

Joon-young is understandably furious, but he’s too weak to fight back much. He screams, and then cries, desperate to go to Eul, begging and pleading to be let out. Eul is left alone to face interrogation, but she keeps silent and refuses to say a word.

Jung-eun has been taking cooking classes, and she prepares a lavish meal for her father, Assemblyman Yoon. He jokes that she’s so talented that it’s a waste to marry her off to Ji-tae, and she promises to visit Dad every day once she’s married.

Something makes Jung-eun think of the man she hit with her car years ago, and she asks her father what happened to him. Apparently she dreamed about him last night, and her father casually says that he died, like it’s no big deal. Jung-eun responds that it’s good that he died, because he’d only be a burden to his poor family if he’d continued in his vegetative state, then father and daughter cheerfully chat about wine. Wow. No words.

As it turns out, it’s Assemblyman Choi’s wife who pressed charges against Eul, and when Ji-tae finds out, he confronts his mother with fury in his eyes. He asked why she did it, and she tries to blow off his questions, but he follows her into her room to demand answers.

He reminds her that a few years ago, Eul had investigated some illegal funding activity within their company, and Mom had made it her mission to crush Eul in court, even though everything she discovered was true. The reason Eul’s been borrowing money from loan sharks was to pay the court fines when she lost the case, and three years later she’s still suffering when she did nothing wrong.

Ji-tae lashes out, asking his mother if she’s even human, if she doesn’t feel the slightest bit guilty for ruining Eul’s life along with his father, unaware that his father is outside the bedroom door and heard every angry word. Assemblyman Choi puts the pieces together, and he remembers who Eul is now.

Eul sits in prison, still wrapped up in the coat and scarf from Joon-young. Meanwhile Joon-young stares down from his bedroom balcony at the guards swarming his home, still looking pale and ill and worried sick.

He can hear someone ringing his doorbell and calling his name, and he sees on the monitor that it’s Jik. The boy cries as he begs Joon-young to help his sister, but Joon-young is trapped and there’s nothing he can do.

Another wave of dizziness and pain hits Joon-young, and he drops to the floor, unable to stand. He struggles to answer the phone when it rings, and when it’s his lawyer, he just asks where Eul is. He tells his lawyer to get her out of jail, but President Namgoong already told him not to get involved with Eul’s case. What the HELL.

Ajusshi is holding a hilarious protest at Joon-young’s mom’s restaurant, refusing to take off his tuxedo in retaliation for her not showing up to the ceremony. He gets a call from Joon-young and launches into a long-winded explanation of why they didn’t go, but he stops when he hears Joon-young’s voice.

He puts Mom on the phone, and it only takes a weak, “Mom, help me,” to have her and Ajusshi racing to his side. Ajusshi rants during the drive over, ready to kill President Namgoong with his bare hands. Mom stays calm, but when she finds her son unconscious on his bedroom floor, she’s stunned.

Eul hands over her coat and Joon-young’s scarf to a sick cellmate. She goes to sleep and hears a voice sarcastically commending her on being so caring, and she opens her eyes to see her father next to her. He fusses at her for giving away her coat and warns her not to cry, but it’s too late.

Dad says she’ll never survive if she’s weak, and he’ll never be able to rest in peace. Eul sobs that she took the money from Assemblyman Choi, and tried to forget about her father. “I settled, Dad. I thought I would die if I didn’t. Who would care for Jik if I died, too?”

Dad hugs her tight, and says that she did the right thing. He apologizes for leaving her alone, crying with her now, and she begs him to take her with him.

In his bedroom, Joon-young’s mom reaches out to him, and he wakes at the touch of her hand on his face. He slowly looks up, and the instant he sees that it’s his mother, his face crumples. She helps him sit up, ready to take him to the hospital.

In a broken voice and with tears streaming down his face, Joon-young says, “Mom. I have to see Eul. Help me. I need to go to her. Please help me, Mom.”

In her cell, Eul cries, alone.

COMMENTS

Wow, I was incredibly impressed with Kim Woo-bin’s performance in this episode, as he’s struggling with his illness and the way his life is crashing down around him. I’ve always liked him as an actor, but I admit I was a bit skeptical of his ability to carry such an emotional role… until now. Consider all my reservations unfounded and just plain wrong. Those episodes of pain and weakness were so hard to watch — I really felt as though Joon-young was using every last ounce of his strength to even take one step. The desperation on his face was so real, I’ll admit I cried several times whenever he was fighting just for the tiniest bit of control over his body. His desperation to get to Eul, even at his own expense, proves more than anything that he truly does love her.

I am horrified that Joon-young’s agent thought that locking him in his room was a valid way to handle Joon-young’s recent behavior. What ever happened to a nice calm discussion? Talking calmly and rationally? NOT imprisoning a person illegally just because you don’t like his choice of girlfriend? I don’t know how Gook-young and President Namgoong thought that stunt would get them anything but fired and most probably sued into oblivion. And then to refuse to help Eul… I’m sorry, but if I were Joon-young, the moment I was free I would CRUSH them.

Joon-young has explained before why he couldn’t become a prosecutor, but somehow I never really got it until his speech to his mother at the top of the episode. His mother raised him that a prosecutor is the most lofty, most respected, most honest and truthful thing a person can be. I understand that he feels he’s not ethical enough to be this ideal that his mother set forth to him, because he’s made choices in his life that hurt others… mainly, the choice to steal Eul’s evidence against Assemblyman Choi in order to protect someone he knew did wrong. Eul nearly dying was just the catalyst that hit home that what he did was truly, deeply immoral. But it’s only now that I realized that he doesn’t just feel unworthy — he actually feels that becoming a prosecutor, when he knew he wasn’t fit for the position, would have been an insult to his mother and her ideals.

It also explains better why Joon-young’s mother has been so angry with him for five years. It wasn’t just about the job — for her, his becoming a prosecutor meant that he was a good person, an honorable and upstanding man that she raised all on her own. He would have been the living proof that her choice to be a single mother was the right choice to make after so many years of sacrifice and insult. By refusing and becoming an actor, she felt he wasn’t just going against her wishes, but actively choosing to be a less-than-stellar person, and she felt that it was probably because he was ashamed of her. Of course that’s not the case, and by refusing the career Joon-young was actually proving that he was becoming a better person, but Mom could never see it that way.

The problem is that they both are so entwined in each other’s emotions, they weren’t able to really talk and work this out sooner. They’re so codependent, even in their separation, that they can’t even discuss the real reasons they’re behaving the way they’re behaving. Which is mostly because they love each other so much, and it’s safe to show your worst side to someone you know will never truly leave you. It was telling that Mom knew it instinctively the moment Joon-young truly needed her — you can’t just drop that kind of motherlove. I think if Joon-young had ever really cut ties with his mother, she’d have changed her tune in a heartbeat. She never wanted her son to leave her alone, just to be the upstanding man she wanted him to be. She was just too angry to realize that in changing careers, he was doing exactly what she always wanted.

As for Eul, while I don’t condone what she did in the slightest (I’ll weigh in on her actions when we learn more about the situation), but I do hope she manages to get out of jail for Joon-young’s sake. He’s going downhill and won’t be able to hide his illness for long, and he deserves a tiny bit of happiness before he’s too sick to enjoy it.

All I ask for is for someone to love me like Joon Young loves Eul. Is this too much to ask for??? He is legit goals... minus the tumors of course

I don't get this drama. Besides Woobin who is a great actor (and everyone else) Suzy really is distracting. Her acting skills is not up on par with everyone else. She stands out like a sore thumb. I find it hard to focus on the story. Between this and Doctors, I can see why Doctors have better ratings. Both have star casts but this one doesn't live up to expectations :/

So conclusion, this drama sucks. I've stuck this long and now I'm going to drop this. I don't see a happy ending for this melodrama. I had this same feeling with "Remember - War of the Son" and I regretted not dropping it. Now same feeling applies to this. Goodbye folks!

[TO ALL NEW READERS] skip this comment thread number #3, it is just the same thing you read in 9 recaps before. kindly save your precious time lol.
I've scrolled down the whole page, and the interesting part is way down there. For the summary, the slow pace and Woobin's acting are the highlight of this episode's commentary, which I agree as well.

(sorry. just trying to help here)

Did I miss something?

@Bella didn't use rude language, only expressed their disappointment at the drama. It's fine to say you dropped it and say why, right? I saw worse comments than this about many other dramas that didn't get this kind of reaction.

Just because you don't see others react the same way as they do to this doesn't make it right. It's okay not to like a drama, actor, etc. but why bother to say "this drama sucks". Seriously if i didn't like a drama i wouldn't even posts on their thread. It kinda ruins it for fans that do enjoy the drama. I know this is a thread for comments but their statement wasn't even adding any constructive criticisms besides hate.

Okay aunty, ONE, Doctors and UF do not air on the same day. They are also COMPLETELY different stories. There is literally zero bases for comparison. W is the drama that shares a time slot with UF, and that is the only reason they get compared (that, and KWB LJS adorable bromance <3 <3 ).
TWO, Why do people keep commenting like she is doing the robot voice and just standing in front of the camera? How have you survived as a kdrama fan if every little off acting has rendered you unable to focus on the story? I mean, I do not even like Suzy on the average day, and I am annoyed by some of this comments. Its like people have even stopped watching her and just concluded 'I am gonna be a hater and comment on every recap how her acting 'takes me out of the story''.. Seriously, MAJOR EYE ROLL. If youre unable to focus on the story, change the channel, maybe?
The Suzy comments are just beginning to get really annoying. A billion times more annoying than whatever footacting Suzy is doing. Yall just sound like trolling haters at this point.

Can't we just like we like and don't like what we don't like without bashing other people's preference?

Why would you show up in a UF recap and bad-mouth it? Doesn't make any sense.

Anyway, Suzy doesn't annoy me at all in these series. Not to see I've ever been interested in any of her earlier roles. I think the only series I've seen her in is DreamHigh.

That being said, WB ruled this episode. He went through a range of breathtaking emotions that had me smile and in tears.

Pffff is she for real comparing why doctors have better rating than UF? Proof she didn't even watch UF. And how someone who didn't even watch UF bashed the drama (in this case is suzy's acting).
Proof you are just haters. You are free to leave.

Some of us is only aware of drama, they are interested in / watching and probably their schedule so that could explain the comparison
For me I hardly notice anything kdrama related except 4 Doctors & UF especially that I can only read recaps for UF since VIKI restricted it in my region ???

Just saying

PREACH! Sometimes it seems like they didn't even watch the episode and they just instantly go to websites any chance they get to comment on her acting. It's like they saw people who hated her acting in the first episodes & they just went on and join the hate train & comment on every episode since this is one good chance they get to put her down because well, they don't like her or her acting. Suzy isn't a great actress, but she hits it right sometimes. But as we read more comments, we can see that there are people who actually appreciate her acting. I, for one, am okay with Suzy as No Eul. Her chemistry with KWB is a big plus. It's a matter of preference. If you can't focus on a drama's story because of some off acting, by all means pls watch something else. For goodness sake, this is episode 10 already! They can't be sticking to this drama and say they don't get it because of one actor's acting ability. Seriously! They could have moved on by now! We're halfway the drama. Why stick when you hate it then rant about it? Comments like that of Bella's are just getting more and more annoying now because of the kind of reasoning and the time (where we are now in the drama).

Also, Bella, UF is not competing against Doctors. You should've known that first and foremost.

Yas this girl. I love KWB very much and I like Suzy as a person. Her acting may not be the best but she's also not the worst. I can watch her without cringing and plus, they have amazing chemistry. I like them together and despite the negative comments about Suzys acting, I really like the storyline and where it's heading.

I mean, I can't wait till Assemblyman Choi finds out that Joon Young is his son and I can't wait till No Eul finds out that Joon Young and Assemblyman are father and son. Suzy fits No Eul perfectly.

Whenever I watch a drama, I usually give it 5 episodes before calling it quit. Like you said, if we're already on episode 10 and people are still watching and complaining, they're obviously very invested. Idk but I for one couldn't get pass episode 7 on descendants of the sun but I won't bash the drama or actors/actresses. Just me tho.

I think a lot of these "comments" are from people riding off the Suzy-can't-act hype. They have already made up their minds before this series even started so irregardless of the outcome, the bias is set. While Suzy's acting is not award winning material, it is definitely passable and not deserving of such negativity. Constructive criticism - yes, but not just random insults and constant comparisons to X idol actress who is "so much better" blah blah blah. If you dislike this show or actress so much, just stop. Pick another show or one with actors or actresses that you deem "worthy of your time". If you've stayed this long, then there must be some perverse part of you that enjoys inflicting visual pain on yourself. OR just admit you're being an immature troll. It is always easy being a keyboard warrior and hiding behind the Internet. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but draw the line at personal attacks and hateful comments. There are always better ways to to provide feedback or discussion points. How would you feel if someone walks past you on the street and whispers to their friend, "wow that is one ugly shirt he/she is wearing", since everyone is entitled to their opinion...

Suzy's acting here for me is more bearable than Park Shin Hye did doctor. Yet Suzy got critics more and PSH get compliment .... I sometimes doesn't understand if they know about basic acting. Might be due to personal pref. Suzy at times though not often does something right in emotional scene compare to idol turn actor in general. She at times doesn't know what supposed to react in a lot of scene, so often she is just give up and give that bland expression. But for me She is decent in several emotional scene. Her whining feels genuine despite over the top.
SHE ACT BETTER THAN ERIC in OHYA AND PARK SHIN HYE in Doctor

Eric is not REALLY good but come on, he's better than Suzy. have you seen the ridiculous Suzy GIF from UF of how she reacted after someone hit her? and you call that a good acting? I dont even hate Suzy but really??? she's really mediocre at acting.

I'm not into kpop and first time I ever heard of Suzy was through Gu Family Book (never watched dream high), but I belive she's a pretty decent actress, in fact I belive she's doing a great job in UF and I love her chemistry with woobin. Don't understand why some people are being so harsh with her, I honeslty find her better than many other more experienced actresses. I just don't get it...

Lots of actresses have been bashed worse than Suzy though.
There was one that even used to be called the 'representative' of blank actresses when she was young but she improved to the level of a critically praised actress with films shown at the Cannes Festival, by being humble enough to take small roles and work hard on that to raise her acting level instead of jumping to lead major dramas when she lacked the skill.

Maybe ifans find Suzy's acting ok when we are not used to reading subtitles so don't watch facial expressions that closely? She's pretty but being a good model does not always make a good actress. And honestly most of the other idol girls who do lead roles are better at acting so it's not even a problem of her being an idol. This last ep is better than her past roles but still very uneven performance, not lead role level in my eyes.

Well... Acting-wise, I think PSH is better than Suzy... but It's kinda strange that I can't stand PSH more than Suzy, unless her drama is really really good (for ex. Pinocchio)...

i have never understood why people can't stand psh. She seems like a sweet down to earth person. And except for that one mess of a drama (I am looking at you, Heirs: He who wears the crown must carry the weight blah blah), I have enjoyed her other works. Pinocchio was awesome, Heartstring was sweet, You're Beautiful was childish but adorable. And FBND has a special place in my panda shaped heart. Is it her personality that pisses people off? Or her past works, which I believe is pretty decent, except Heirs. Idk

It's because she is wildly popular and got popular because of You're beautiful and Heirs, which are the candy roles. Jealousy or dislike because of popularity, which ever be it, if she had done smaller productions and be moderately *popular* she wouldn't have gotten so much hate, just my two cents.

0

That's why I said I find it strange. I have nothing against her as a person or as an entertainer/actress. I don't think It's not jealosy either since I like some actresses who are more successful than PSH. I often check her newest dramas and try to watch them with an open mind, I even downloaded Doctors up to episode 10 without even knowing what that drama is about. But unfortunately, I ended up dropping most of them. I could only finish watching The Flower Boy Next Door and Pinocchio. I've dropped Doctors and deleted the files already. Well maybe it's not her acting, maybe it's just that... most of her drama choices don't suit my taste.

I want to add (so this comment won't be OOT...LOL) that at first, I was sceptical about Woo Bin's acting skill. Well, he's not a bad actor... but I didn't think he's ready yet to play role as a main protagonist in a melodrama. But I was completely wrong and I'm glad that I was proven to be. Well, he's a bit awkward in the first two episodes, but he's getting better and better in every episode. I must say wasn't his fan before but now I am.

Oh you dont like heirs? Im starting love kim woo bin after heirs. And even shipping PSH -KWB more thn PSH- suzy's boyfriend *giggle*.

I got new vibe of KWB in UF but i still missed him as choi young do, he were really cool and powerfull as young do back thn. Hufff

Eric at times doesn't know his character at all. His technique as an actor is decent but in OHYA all his action seems formulaic and never feels geniune . In terms of crying scene, Suzy does alot better.

Before this drama, I actually rate Eric better. I don't know, might be due to LKH's line is very moving, {at times, not often LOL) Suzy makes me cried and she feels alive.

Well People, I don't necesarily said Suzy is doing a decent job given the material. Alot of times, I really wish No Eul is acted with better actress... But it might be due to greater material, at times Suzy just feel alive if you compare with PSH performances in Doctor. or any bad actress or actor. Suzy is bearable for me, but by no means she is qualified for the job.

Just because PSH has more 15 years acting experience doesn't mean she is doing any better. She is very lackluster in Doctor. Well it's just opinion. Art is subjective.

I am glad that I am not the only one who thinks so.. I had really high hopes for this and I was so excited when it came out, but it is very disappointing.. I haven't started watching Doctors or Beautiful Mind yet, but I have started watching W, which airs on the same time as UF and if I hand to choose one out of the 2 that I want to watch, I would choose W anyday!! Because that is a masterpiece of a drama and this comes nowhere close to how awesome W is..!!

wow, for me is the other way around, I was so looking to watch W, while I didn't even have UF on my plan to watch list, but heck, UF owns W big time as far as I am concerned, I dont even feel like watching the latest 2 episodes of W, too many plot holes and inconsistencies. I'm not trying to bash it or anything, it is a decent drama, but kinda average, the writer gets away to easy with a lot of unanswered questions, giving that the plot is taking place in a fantasy world and everything seems to be allowed, regardless of being totally irational.

I wouldn't call it as far as plotholes and inconsistencies. While I've relegated to reading only DB's recap for W, I find that the writers for both dramas seem to be withholding all the crucial information to the characters' motivation.

We still have a lot of unanswered questions in UF too. Like JY and Eul's past relationship and how deeply attached were they. I also think they've yet to reveal JE's true self (to me at least). I find that she's hiding her true feelings from her dad regarding the accident.

you cannot conclude that a drama has "too many plot holes and inconsistencies" till it is finished. The writer is withholding crucial information that would be revealed due its time. If you've followed it till it's latest episode you would know that the writer is actually very detail oriented and would drop the bomb at the perfect moment to leave viewers shell-shocked.

Oh well it's your loss to have missed watching an amazing show. Sayang pero di ka kawalan :)

With W, I really really don't want to be spoiled (I don't even watch its preview) but I only watch it once per episode and have no desire to rewatch it again.

It's a very rare chance to have two very good dramas thay I enjoy to watch in the same time slot. Wednesday is my new weekend (even though I always end up watching them on the weekend anyway LOL)

I agree with you. W and UF are two totally different types of dramas. They have their merits and their criticisms. But there's no reason not to like them both.

I watch UF before W because I was worried I'd drop it and not continue the story. But I'm finding that despite the fact that it has very little originality, that is, in the sense that the plot devices like cars of doom, corrupt politicians, fatal illnesses, filial piety, and arranged marriages -- it has them all and they are pretty cliched. But in spite of that, it tells the story well, so I continue to watch. Honestly, it seems that Bella just has a problem with Suzy, because I can't see where someone would need to take 10 episodes to stop watching just because of one character's alleged poor acting. She sounds just like Joon Young's Mother who has her own anti campaign just because he didn't become a prosecutor. "How dare you cast Suzy, and for that I'm going to march and around and protest", LOL.

Back to my first paragraph. I'm just happy that I have two Wed/Thurs dramas to watch and that they are both enjoyable and entertaining. W is a romantic comedy that is innovative and sometimes mindblowing. UF is a melodrama that is filmed beautifully, with a gorgeous OST and great acting. It's a beautiful drama and while it uses many of the tropes that have been done to death before, the characters like Joon Young's Mom, Assemblyman Choi, Ji Tae, Jik, Haru, and Gook Young are portrayed well with shades of gray instead of painted black or white. I mean, I know Assemblyman Choi is Eul's biggest enemy and yet he's no evil villain. He's tortured by his own conscience and his own problems. Joon Young our main protagonist has so much on his plate but frankly, he's not very good working with others, LOL. That's why I continue to watch this show :)

I read a lot of criticism lately about him for UF. Some said he was overrated, that he and suzy are at equal levels of acting, that he is a product of mediaplay nothing else etc etc

And i admit in the initial episodes he was patchy - good in some parts, not in others.

So i kept wondering if my love for him was all about how he looks *looks darn fine!* .... but solid acting in past few episodes.

I don't think he is a great actor but he is a good actor and not just another pretty face.

I think KWB just has the utter bad luck of having Suzy as his lead! I am not a fan of his but I was drawn to watching him in UF. Suzy on the other hand is just plain irritating! Hate her crying - just wished her character would just disappear with no more screen time (not disappear with us watching her back story!)

Suzy is pretty and she should just model or do her song and dance.

Poor KWB though - I don't know if any producer / director will give him a leading role after this in the near future.

They should have cast Shin Mina instead! I can see that drama hitting all the right notes!

Though UF has its flaws, I'll stick around.

0

Given the hype and then the actual Fall in ratings, even i wonder if he will be offered a lead anytime soon. Which is really sad given that he is doing a good job.

I honestly cannot blame the audiences tuning out given that the writer has inserted EVERY single cliche in one story. And by the time the better episodes came, lots of people had moved on

I do hope his career is not affected too adversely

there not much negativity about him. Considering there is plenty of actors, who had much bigger flops under their belts and still getting roles, if he himself interested, he can comeback to dramaland. Thing is this hate could actually scare him off and sent straight to doing just movies, where he is doing pretty good job.

0

btw, sorry for grammar mistakes. too sleepy, I can't even remember rules xD

0

KWB will be fine, there are plenty of good comments about his acting and he was the star of 3 hit movies before. But I think he feels bad about the low ratings, he even apologized to his fan cafe for not meeting expectations or showing a bright and cheery character.

Though god knows why he apologized, everyone knows LKH dramas are all deathly illness melo anyway. This is not the Reply series or a romcom.

0

That letter actually showed me, how much a soft hearted he actually, despite his look, guy is actully a big fluffy bear. To bad, people used it against him.

0

I don't know why he said that either, not his fault the story is so slow!

If anyone should apologize it's KBS for doing all that media play, and LKH for the slow story and outdated plot.

0

I doubt KWB or LJS has to worry about dramas to be cast in, in the near future, let's just hope that the other capable male leads are enjoying some off time or have to do their mandatory military service. Because especially in KWBs case we really need to see him as the romantic/hero etc some more.

0

I reckon there wouldn't have been such disappointment from the audience if they didn't promote UF with such huge hype. They claimed it would break records and be the next 'Descendants of the Sun' which totally raised expectations. If they never promoted it like that, the drama would have done well

0

Honestly, i think crying scene is one of the scene suzy are good at doing especially the silent type.

One ''flop'' wouldn't stop a producer/directing casting someone if the actor has stable fanbase, still relevant. I mean Joowon still bag lead role after 7th Grade Civil Servant, which ratings are pretty similar to UF.

And if I'm correct Lee Kyunghee herself cast the Suzy & Woobin

Agree! When she cried to her dad, it shows how vulnerable she is. I mean she had to grow up way before her time to take care of Jik. With her dad, she lets her inner childlike emotions out which is a stark contrast to her tough exterior. I think that's why they cast Suzy for this character. She has this innocent charm that fits No Eul's character. Man! Never thought I'd see the day when I complimented Suzy. No offense though

0

I also like Suzy's crying scenes, especially the "silent crying" scenes. Because in real life, that is how we cry sometimes. We hold it in and try to keep it together because we want to keep a strong face, and sometimes like in Eul's case, she doesn't want to get her brother be affected by her own pain. It's also a plus that she has this innocent and pitiful look. Like she looks exhausted and beaten.

On the contrary, when we are with our parents no matter how old we are, when we are down and beaten, we cry to them like a child because it is the only time thay we can become child again and have someone hug us unlike no one else in the world.

0

I like her when she act like she's so tired of life. She makes me have this urge to pat her in the back.

0

Not only she cast them, but she wrote JY by having Woo Bin in her mind. Not sure about Suzy, but she was really into them.

0

Woobin plays a guy in pain really well. Like that magnetic guy who acts like an arrogant dick but it's just to cover up his inner angst and heart of gold. I think he should be like the Hugh Grant of kdramas and just keep on playing that character.

Ikr. Poor JT when I thought of his position being raised by people who can't fess up. It is very clear JT's moms lack of a conscience is a reality from earlier on, but this episode proves to me his stepdad has a hard time considering other peoples feelings in what he said to JY and treated Eul like she was nothing in the beginning. He only tried to get Eul off the hook this time, considering the fact that he "forgot" her, because JY saved his life. Kudos to JY for making it clear to his dad that he didn't save him for him or his mother, well at least in JY's mind, but he tried to save Eul from ruining her life with a murder charge. Which brings us back to JTs mom, she totally deserved her husband if he is gonna act like that, treating the "lower class like dirt", does he really think Young Ok will still bow before him if she knows just how pathetic he has become over the years, from now on he can become his wife's lackey, hey? Why not he already gave her a kidney. Maybe he should think about giving her his heart, as it appears people want to knock him over for no apparent reason.

Well yes, Haru is a spoiled kid, we have a name for that, it's called "teenager" :)She's ok, she will get better.
I went to boarding school with rich kids as a scholarship student and saw many of these typical daddy's girls..But..most of them turned out OK after they met the right friends who put them straight. Friends can be a powerfull influence on people, sometimes more so then parents (according to my best (rich) friend who says she feels more at home with my family then hers)
Given the parents and upbringing she had, ofcourse she is still spoiled at this age. but i'm convinced she's not a bad girl.
A few more meetings with mr "i don't fall for your nonsense " Jik and she will be ok ;) I bet she kept the kitten and called it "dongsaeng" or something :) :) Let's hope the kitten does'not become a fat cat weighing 9 and a half kilo's like the one snuggling on my lap right now..he is soooooo put on a diet. I'm glad i stuck around, the show is really getting good.

Parts that i loved

- Mother and son phonecall. JY asking his mom what all of us have been asking "what did he do so wrong". I loved, loved, KWB's acting in this. He was actually shaking in anger during the call. And when mom starts with her reasons, he sort of gives up like 'there is no point in talking to her'. Excellent acting

- JY and NE love story picks up pace in the midst of melodrama. And they are cute without being cheesy

- JY being locked up. Horrifying but representative of how much control agencies exert on stars. I hope JY knocks out a few teeth when he recovers

- NE and her dad prison meeting. Not only to survive, but she feels since she already did the worst by "settling" so why have pride when accepting bribes or picking up thrown money. JY should be here to give her a hug.

This show really is a case of how the over-hype led to downfall. Bec if it had been normally promoted, people would have given it a chance till the good episodes started rolling in.

They are going to have a long, hard road convincing me that Haru deserves to be within a continent of Jik. He's the most mature high schooler ever, and she's a brat who loses other people's cats and has been horribly raised by a mother who is apparently a full-on sociopath.

0

Required fields are marked *

It makes me wonder why so many female characters, second leads mainly, get written to be evil undeserving bitches compared to the "nice" female lead or second male lead.

Something about it starts to feel forced, like the story is saying that not having the love of the guy you like means you will be seen as bitter, clingy or pathetic instead of just flawed or unlucky like any real person. Too many dramas do this.

0
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't understand why second female leads can just be "not the right one for the main guy" but instead they have to be evil, overbearing, or caddy.

Now we also have to contend with the prevalence of female non-second leads who get paired with the remaining " good and decent guys" in the drama and UF is not the only drama that has been doing this lately.

Don't redeem terrible characters at the last min and them pair them with guys that have been consistently strong in character. Who exactly is asking for that?

Steps down from soapbox

People can be redeemed but leave them single.

0

I maybe didnt make it clear, I'm not asking why bitchy mean second lead women get paired up with the "nice guy" they don't deserve

I'm asking why all these dramas write them as such unredeeemable characters at all. Why they make that decision.

It's ok if the bitch is a bitch for her own reason not related to liking a guy, like even Baek In Ha from cheese in the Trap or the girl from Sassy Go go. But so many dramas just make their second lead females pathetic and dislikable with no function other than being there for us to hate or showing how 'good' the heroine is to compare, instead oF being a full character. Why do drama writers choose to write them like that?

0

@pigsnout, the answer is easy...lazy writing.

I'm not a huge fan of melodramas', but Uncontrollably Fond kept me interested with KWB's superb acting and the depth of the characters' emotions, but seriously - the pacing is becoming gag-worthy. I understand where everybody is coming from, but does it have to be this slow?Forget about snail pace; everyone's moving through super-glue.

I am still interested in this drama but, like you, the pacing is really bugging me. Not only the pacing of the story telling but the characters' reactions are unrealistically slowwwww.
For example, how can the congressman miss that a van was heading towards him when it was going so slowly? When the mother found Joon-young on the floor, she should've rushed to him and call 911 at the same time, not just stand and stare. When No Eul was brought to the hospital, none of the medical staff reacted. Seriously, they of all people should be used to emergencies!

I felt that each scene was directed that way so it can be used as a cliff hanger and looses the urgency that's should've been there.

I don't understand why these directors insist on using slow-motion. It's like the writer/director is severely underestimating the viewers ability to understand suspenseful moments - with slowmo, they're literally coming up to the viewer with a signpost spelling THIS IS A SUSPENSEFUL MOMENT, TAKE NOTE! Sheesh.

Like you, I really don't see why see nobody in this drama has the presence of mind to call 911 (I think it's 119 in Korea, not sure). It's a goddamn three-digit number, not rocket science. And I'm severely annoyed how everyone is just DITHERING in their own little mess, nobody has the brains to grow up and understand that there's bigger problems outside their own little bubble.

And there's absolutely NO communication between the characters! Choi, Mom, Joon Young, Eul, Jik, Ji Tae... seriously, is it too much to ask for somebody to grow a pair of balls and open their mouth? -,-

If you count out the driving/intense eye-staring/suspenseful finger-shaking/blinking in each episode, we'd probably only have five episodes of plot so far.

(Not that I hate this drama - I actually really like it - but all this melodramatic suspense is just killing the otherwise very sweet vibe.)

I like it too but sometimes (wait, did I say sometimes? that's me being sarcastic) the pacing is just too damn slow. I'm not gonna compare and contrast with other shows, there's already plenty of people who do that and I think I should appreciate this drama on its own merits, but geez, I wish things would speed up and people would stop being inhuman (that would be the hit-and-run woman--I couldn't bother to learn her name--and her dad, and Ji Tae's mom) or crazy (what kind of agency president would lock up his star in his own home???) or foolish (Mom should know that it takes A LOT for Joon Young to plead like that, she should do whatever needs to be done to help him).

I feel bad for the actors and the hype around them gettimg blamed. I kinda get it, though. They are front and center. They're the ones we're watching, the ones on the front line so they would be the one to get hit first. But the backbone of a show is the story. And for this matter, I must say that although it is an interesting one, the pacing has been slow. I feel like everything that happened in 10 episodes could've been edited down to 8 or 7. It's worth noting that people who said they left or are leaving the drama pointed out that they got bored with the drama. That is one sign that the pacing is not that good.

Agreed. It does not have a scintillating plot to begin with but with good plot progression and direction, Woo Bin and Suzy's prettiness might have pulled this through (despite good/bad acting - I don't comment except I dislike Suzy in drunk scenes). I feel I'm committed now and will see the drama to the end but it will be one of my least memorable ones unless there's some major twists and suspense coming up in the last six episodes as we wait for SJY to die, and probably Eul too, knowing the writer.

Now I'm curious.... South Korean drama scripts aren't known to be fully written before shooting starts, right? So the actors weigh offers based on the incomplete scripts (and possibly the general plot and ending, or maybe not even the ending, like the Reply series casts definitely didn't know how it would end until before shooting the last episodes) and the people attached to the drama, right? (writer, director, other actors) So, in a way, it's very possible to sign on a production that reads very well on the first few episodes but sucks overall. I was thinking City Hunter. The first half was really suspenseful and thrilling and showed all the signs of a good drama, but towards the end it fell apart.

I only know A Love to Kill out of Lee Kyung Hee's body of work, and maybe that should have been warning enough. I mean I liked the drama but it often frustrated me.

Let's hope the pacing gets better towards the second half.

Also, I've always paint Ji-Tae's father as the evil one, while its his mom? What..

I'm so sad for Ji-Tae, at least I'm really hoping Im Joo Hwan will get better role after this. His acting is so memorable! or even Im Joo Eun.

I'm thankful now mom knows that Joon Young is sick.

His mom can be described in one sentence: "lacking courage is a crime."

She pushed JoonYoung's mom away, refused to let her husband meet his son and now destroys NoEul because of what she means to her company.

What filth. What a disgusting character.

@peeps, exactly: I am thinking Joon Young's mom is more afraid of JiTae's mom. Than trying to show off her son that she raised without JYs dad's help, because why does she insist on JY being a prosecutor, it was rather to help her if she gets threatened again by JTs evil mom. And this also parallels in JYs love life, because his mom insists that JY and his heart of gold could help the poor and down trodden, like Eul and Jik. Where JiTae And Haru think throwing money at people will make there problems go away because they learnt this from. JY and Harus biological dad -- Joon Young on the other hand cannot understand why people treat people beneath them with no respect. JYs mom is flawed yes but I think people are hard on her because she was probably threatened, who knows the powers that be may be threading her that Could take Joon Young out any time only if he were a prosecutor could he protect himself and his mom. His mom thinks JYs dad is the one calling the shots in that household. The evidence is in JTs mom who was almost elated to hear of JYs impending death, it is as if she was relieved to know that she doesn't have to take out her 'star witness' to give testimony against her.

The roller coaster of emotions both have to go through is difficult to maintain, but they are doing it. I'm invested in their acting, the writing, their chemistry. I hope more folks can appreciate it. This drama is getting better and better with every episode.

Kim Woo Bin really had me crying in this episode ???? Nothing seems to be going the way he wants it to and it crushes my soul. Suzy really got me with the scene with her dad too. I'm such a sucker for dead parents who come back as a way to comfort their kids. I really didn't expect her to actually try to run the guy over and I can't tell if she turned away because she realized it was bad or if it was because of Joon Young. I hope it was the former. Either way I'm still hooked and I can't wait for them to start being coupley next week!

(Side note, can people stop hating on Suzy's acting. I thought we already decided that it was getting old and was completely unnecessary. If you're deciding to drop the drama there's no need to comment with a send off and hate. Just don't go to the post and bother fans who actually want to discuss. I love this drama and it really upsets me every time I come here to look for people to discuss with and only find hate. If you like another drama better go comment on their thread and stop bothering UF fans.)

Kim Woo Bin was the highlight of this episode! He is continuing to wow me every time he's on screen. Just awesome!

And I get No Eul feels like Choi ruined her life but I mean murder girl?! In that moment, I really wanted to knock some sense into her. She is very shameless and has no scruples but I really admire her because she does all she can to raise her little brother (even though it sometimes seems like he is raising her grown ass). But this was a bit much. If it wasn't for Joon-young...

And yay for Mom coming to the rescue! I am glad that even with her being a total witch to her only son (who really has been taking it well until this episode at least) she is still not that angry she won't come rushing to his side when he truly needs her.

Now that we are at the halfway mark, I feel like the episodes have been getting better. The last few scenes with Suzy/Dad and Joon-young/Mom really hit me in the gut.

Anyway, I read NoEul's murder attempt as a moment of insanity. She didn't even seem to have her wits about her then. No more no less. She just wasn't even thinking.

Yeah, when they went "dad..." and "mom..." my heart shattered. Those are two words that are usually uttered without much thought but in that moment, all the longing the pleading and trust poured into those two words embodies everything about the phrase "parents aren't just the people who gave birth to you".

I think the murder attempt is more her not having conscious thought and was just trying to make them feel the pain she does, only when someone else appears on the scene does she snap out of it and swerves. Her reaction later in hospital was one of a very tir3d person, she was so tired of fighting, of living, of fighting to live that she allowed JY to.convince her to run away. She wanted to run away forever. I thought Suzy was good in these scences, her voice was very quiet and unsure.

Rolling my eyes at the convenience of JY headaches, always alone. It has to happen in from of someone someday.

Same thoughts here. Eul is in a very emotional state at the moment. Remembering her dad, meeting the prosecutor again. It reminds us that even if she's in a good place relationship-wise, this is still the same girl we met in the pilot. She's broken, exhausted, desperate, barely hanging in there - and she's been so for years now. She's like "I just want everything to be done now". So desperate that she herself wants to bring her own pain to the ones who hurt her. Which is why Joon Young's proposal to run away is a very convenient escape for her. Just wanting to be happy once and for all.

And yes, Suzy is good in her scenes. I appreciate her subtlety this time. And also when she cried like a little girl when she was talking to her dad. Teared up there. I can feel her exhaustion and desperation - she just crumbles like a kid to her dad. For goodness sake, she barely had the chance to be a "kid" so to speak because she had to "grow up" right away to care for Jik. Poor girl.

Yeah, Joon Young was visibly furious after the crash, Eul and JY were the only two injured by that crash and now they charge her with attempted murder? Yeah it is JiTaes moms doing, I think he should disown his mother for this. Let's face it Choi deserves it, to be shaken up like that even if he genuinely thought they catched her fathers murderer, because for all you know JTs mom sealed the deal there and Choi thinks Eul is just crazy still going on and on after that man was arrested because he doesn't sevto link Joon Young's fiancé with wickedness.

Ahhhhhhhh finally the actor I knew Kim Woo Bin could be when I watched Heirs, shows up this week. Thank you for restoring my faith in your acting, it was good again ♡♡♡♡

but seriously the plot is too slow for my life, I wish more happened. The scenes with his mom and Eul's dad in the cell are touching. And JT family is terrible. Why are we even having a second lead female at all, it feels she gets only the same screen time as Pororo and a flat cold rich bitch role. We have enough people to hate, they don't have to design another one.

Next ep, Joon Young should sue everyone. Locking an adult man in his room like that has to be some kind of wrong under the law, right? And not even by his family, by his agency.

Some many emotions flying through this episode. I definitely shed some tears for JY cause he is so desperate and unable to help her in that moment of need. I hope that JY can relate this kind of desperation and helplessness that he felt to how NE's been feeling about her situation - the same kind of desperation and helplessness. Having to beg for help and money.

JT's mom is evil as crap and does she even feel remorse?? The girl who killed NE'a father - urgh - these people make me sick. jY's not wrong about the type of prosecutor he may end of being, which led him to give it up.

Them locking up JY - I can't even. If JY cannot be let free to save his girl - well, then I say screw the public and fans. Darn media play doesn't even write the truth anyways. I am glad JY doesn't give up trying.

I know going into it - I am expecting at the very least JY's dying by the end. There may be more people but at least JY. I would be very shocked if JY lived. It's not the writer's style in this kind of melo. It's just so painful to watch him get sicker and sicker.

I am glad that there are a few cute scenes still. The smile on JY's face is priceless when he sees her. His face really lights up. KWB is on fire in some scenes, really spot on. Suzy is doing an ok job. I have a lot of kdramas. She isn't the worst that I've seen... I still like her scenes with JY and her father.

I may be the minority but UF is currently my fave drama among the rest that are airing (yes, more than W, more than Doctors and more than the awesome Squad 38)

Honestly, I normally find melodrama frustrating with all the angst, but this one just pulls me in so much. The angst are so good. Kim Woo-bin rocks big time with his portrayal of pain and desperation and I just want him to be happy now even if he has to die at the end.
I really can't wait to see what happens next. When will all the secrets out? When will the bad guys get what they deserve? *pulls hair

On separate note, I have no problem with Suzy's acting. I think she's considered better than some others (shall not name names). There's really no need to criticize her, me think she's doing fine, though not as awesome as the rest.

Korea is also going through the most amazing Golden Age of Television Drama. The shear volume and breath of work (writers, actors and directors) coming out of that country is just mind boggling. No wonder it's so popular around the world. :P

From her bio, it looks like she's also teaching a course in writing in some college. Just imagine being in her class, peons!

it's not that I didn't appreciate this story, it just I've predicted this and I watched winter sonata and autumn in my heart galore,
maybe because it's not convincing enough or this trope has been playing several times already,

kim woo bin inner struggle displayed good but I had nothing else to look forward,
I want to know how this end but the feeling that the pacing could do better or make the character learn faster from their previous mistake make me feel like they drag the story too much,

I hope people don't really rude if someone wants to leave on ep 10 in 16/20 ep drama, it actually a rational decision to give 10 episode chance before you realised you can't tolerate it anymore,

I will still watch this drama while ironing or cleaning but Idk why they can't execute this genre better with more story in 2016,

also when the drama pace is slow, mean that there's nothing much for the story/mystery to think about, the acting gonna look more apparent and suzy not really doing it good, she probably improved but it makes me realized the earlier day critique on idol's acting,

Both Woo Bin and Suzy actual very well in this very emotional episode. My heart felt like crying when both cried. Suzy was particularly so good in her acting in the prison crying with her father, the difficult life she is living and wanting to just leave with the father. Both Woo Bin and Suzy took up the roles because they wanted a more challenging roles to what they had been doing in the past. Well done! I didn't even want to touch Doctors drama because after seeing both lead actor and actress in so many dramas before, I can literary and vividly imagine how they act and their expression. Even if they are good actor/actress but they always use the same expressions in same roles anyway. As for Woo Bin and Suzy because heavy emotional roles are new to them, it is a delight to watch them act because their acting is fresh and new, so one can be surprised to watch their every moment!

Yes to that movie. Originally any other pretty actress would have made me happy for Joon Young and of course the fans of UF. But by episode 10, Suzy is better than I expected, because her Mari was sort of annoying in Big. I think this character of Eul is great for her it is actually a savior because I wanted Mari shipped off to the US forever but Eul is like I can't give this role to even a better actress. It is her role even the way she stood up to Haru with the cat scene, it wasn't great but it made sense this Eul is a producer who was not afforded a luxurious life and could not go to college as result of her fathers untimely death. Most kids stay kids if they are struck with fame or tradgedy at a young age. And Suzy portrays this quite well despite critics of hers thinking this is by default I think she is choosing to make Eul like able for us she could have annoyed us like Mari, but that again is what she was supposed to do in Big.

Had to drink lots of water today as I was dehydrated from all the crying last night. And this was only the 10th episode. Bring it on, show! My tear ducts are ready.

I hope JY never talks to his manager and agent again WTF. Even if they don’t know that he’s sick, you don’t lock somebody up. How many days was he in there? Did they give him food? Seriously I’m so mad at GY, isn’t he supposed to be his friend who JY helped bailed out of trouble. I think the character of GY is wasted. I’m not sure whether they intended GY’s character to provide comic relief. If he was, he’s doing a lousy job because I just find him annoying. If not, then he should have been, and a better actor should have been chosen. So far, his voice and acting choice grate on my nerves. It would have been good if his character was close to JY, goodness knows JY needs some bromance. PLEASE show, along with the romance with Eul, a healed relationship with his mother, let JY be close to Jik too. I need those two to be BROS.

Hopefully next week JY and Eul relationship won’t take another step backwards as we only had a few scene of them together this episode! We need more cute, happy scenes between the two. Their chemistry is sizzling. Please no angst from why he didn’t come sooner to her in jail. She saw JY fell when he was chasing after her right. Will she know of his illness now? I would like for her to fall wholeheartedly in love with him first before she does.

I don't see why so many of us get angry with people who don't like oppa/unnie's acting. The comment section is for all opinions, positive and negative or anything at all.

As long as you don't cross the line and use rude language to other posters like some people last week, or say things about the actors outside how they do their job it should be ok. I had to hear critical opinions about my fav too, the answer is not to ban everyone who criticises.

If all you have to say about a drama episode after episode is because of a particular actor or actress I would say that isn't criticism anymore, that's just bashing for the sake of it. There is less of it now on the recaps but before over half the comments were just bashing Suzy and saying how she ruined the drama and thats why ♢ is going to be better. That isn't criticism that is pure hateful comments. We all have a right to enjoy our drama and be able to chat to like minded people, instead of having to weave through an inundated amount of hate. I do believe those people should be ban. They aren't bringing anything to the conversation but hate.

We all have a right to enjoy drama. No one on this site can stop anyone from watching this or from talking to us about what you enjoy. But we don't get to dictate on how other people comment in dramabeans, it's not a fansite or yours to decide with. Other people still have the right to give their own opinion if they say it in proper langauge . People can dislike an actor's acting and still be watching for other things like the story or other actors.

And if it's that hard to see a comment saying 'X's acting sucks' then it's better to scroll. I do it all the time, it's not hard, you just pull the tip of your finger up over your phone screen.

I don't think they meant to ban people just for saying they hate or can't stand actor etc..., they are talking about the ones that continually come on the forum just to post how they can't stand the drama or actor & will be dropping it yet they come back every episode to post same stuff. I mean you tell people how Suzy shouldn't be acting in every drama episode but that's okay because you at least have watched the show based off your comments. It's obvious when the comments are just purely hateful.

Nope. Wrong. Try again. She said "ban". If you don't like someone's comment, just scroll pass. It's a free country and a free forum and even if I detest trolls, they have to right to write whatever they want. People don't have to live by your standards of distaste. This is not your third grade school house. Completely agree with Pigsnout.

0

@jisg
I am pretty sure i know what "ban" means. I am just saying that they meant not just banning anyone that says they hate actor, drama, or etc. it's the ones that keep coming back episode after episode 10 episodes in with the same rhetoric. Yes it's easy to scroll past certain posts but why when i can just complain about said posts lol. Obviously its a free forum hence you get hateful posts. I also agree that people are entitled to their opinion but let's just say we differ on the tactics. This isn't a 3rd grade class but some people on here sure act like they are 8 when posting.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone's bedroom door lock from the outside? I've never seen that in any of the houses I've lived in. That sort of defeats the purpose of bedroom locks if they can be opened from the outside. I know that in emergencies, they usually take the doors off the hinges or kick it to get in.

Do you live in the USA? I do and I can't say I've ever seen any bedroom doors that are locked from the outside. '

Hope you don't mind my asking: why is there a need to lock the door from the outside? I can understand if you lived with roommates. Or if you're living in a really old house that used a skeleton key.

In this drama, the house is very modern and I just can't imagine there would be a need to open a bedroom door from the outside, especially a Master bedroom.

I live in India, it's very common to keep valuables like jewellery and stuff in the house so they keep them in one room and lock the room from the outside if they go out during the day. Even generally, houses have keys for all the bedrooms/they can be locked from outside. And lots of people have maids working in the house too so you want to keep things away safely.

The old-style houses have bolts on the outside to put a lock, the new ones just have locks built directly into the door.

Thank you.

In the States, if people have valuables in the house, they are usually placed in safes (can be in the bedroom or in an office). Since the maids need access to clean the bedrooms the doors are unlocked.

So, in India, do maids not clean the bedrooms?

0

They clean the bedrooms but usually it's done when the house owners are there in the house. Once they go out the bedroom is locked with whatever safe or jewellery box inside, and the maids can clean the rest of the house.

1. Imo Suzy's acting is good. Not great but good. Plus watching same kind of acting from every actresess would be boring. Hers is so much better than the lead in shadowhunter - city of bone's series.

2. I love the pacing because i wanna know details instead of being rushed into everything. I hate sad melodrama n usually i will avoid it but UF made me come back every week.

3. I love how almost every characters are complex n we learn new things as the episode progressed.

4. We're half way down the road n i cant wait when everything laid in the open n every secrets exposed. Moreover i cant wait how they will deal with it.

5. I will stick with this drama no matter how ppl kept on complaining abt the actings.

6. I am most curious about Noh Eul's character. She is most of the time near the edge.. running from creditors while keeping 1self n little brother safe aint easy task. I really wanna know when she decided to settle.. (my guess was when she was hit by that car) i hope they will take us back n tell what happened.

7. Lastly.. i am resigned to the fact that i will be crying a lot while watching this drama but wont change it any other way. Thank u for the recap cos it's interesting to read other people's views it's enjoyable to read except for a few repetitive whinings.

Yeah, I think Suzy's acting is okay. She also has a nice chemistry with Woo Bin.

My problem with her is when she started to cry or laugh in some scenes. It seemed fake or forced... like she's trying so hard to when she supposed to look like she barely hold it in...

I love her performance in episode 9 the most. Her acting seems so natural in that episode.

Agree with the character being complex. That make them feels real, everyone had their good/bad and flaws. Just hope Jungeun got the same treatment. Even her feelings for Jitae are like out of the blue, just like Noeul/Joonyoung

This week episodes pacing are good, but ep 3/4 (i think?) was a bit slow. Yet I still come back for this drama, it's weirdly addicting. And everyone was saying that's it cliche, but it didn't drag the secret, like less ten minutes in the drama we learn JY have brain tumor.

Young Ok must have another reason for wanting Joon Young to be a prosecutor where she explains that it is to help the poor and Joon Young explains that it is to show him off in front of his prosecutor father some day -- yeah it may be a bit of both but I am convinced JTs evil mom threatened Young Ok so she needed her son to protect her as part of the lower strata and it is not that she looks down on his profession as an actor as such. He is a clever kid from studing all those years before eventually giving up on his prosecutor goal and despite him asking his mom what he did wrong in the beginning of the episode he wants her to admit what he already figured out that she is afraid of the big bad wolf I.e. JTs mommy dearest.

Yeah, I can see where she comes from. I even know that she, deep down inside, loves her son no matter what despite her appearance. But sometimes I just can't believe how far she could go just to make her point to SJY. It really breaks my heart every times she says mean things to him and he just brushes it off as if it were nothing (I'd rather see him crying like a baby, really)... when he begs her to cook for him and she acts like she doesn't know him... or when she was invited to award but she decided not to show up because she had no courage to see Mr. Choi...

It almost seems like she doesn't understand the gravity of what she's done to her son... how much it hurts him... Just because SJY is strong enough to take the punches doesn't mean she has right to beat him to death

And... is it all worth it?

She's so busy being bitter for almost 30 years because of the love she could never have... that she forgets to treasure what she already has right in front of her eyes...

I see what you mean. KWB did the same thing, for me at least in Heirs, I was screaming at his mother on the screen. "How could you leave a kid like that with his violent father? How could you not try to come back in his life? Hurry up and give him a hug!" I didn't expect UF to have a mom this difficult with him again. But I have to admit if I were the writer here, and had KWB in mind, well I would not let him die -- but I would give him a mom who would eventually soften at him as he plays so well with the people in his life's negativity toward him.

Thanks LollyPip for the recap ? I have never been really into melodrama before but this drama is the ultimate melo for me. Kim Woo Bin is really killing it in this. Same goes for Suzy as when she cried at the end, I truly feel her loneliness ? On another note, is it just me but why do I feel that both of them will die at the end of this drama? JY due to his tumor and NE for hers as well ? The funny thing is, I usually avoid such dramas (I've never watched Titanic as I cannot bear with the thought of Leo dying ?) but this drama is the ultimate drama for me. UF 화이팅! ?

I don't think this is the case. SJY doesn't keep on tripping all the time even though he has tumor. I think it's just to show how nervous NE is whenever SJY is around.

But yeah I do agree there's a possibility NE would die too. LKH has done it before in A love to kill and I'm sorry I love you.

Omg. I am same as u. LoL. I never watch n avoid Titanic altogether cos i know i would be crying. N i also think both JY n NE would die in the end. JY for his tumor n NE from her low antibody probably from that accident few yrs ago or many hard work that she had to do as documentary producer.

Anyways i still have small hope that um JY would somehow get treatment n beat his cancer so he would be able to protect NE n NJ..

As for JY mother.. i think Ji Tae's uncle did something that scared the hell out of her. N by JY becoming a Prosecuter would be powerful enuff to protect him from JiTae's mother n uncle. I do not think she was mean to her son for her selfish ambition. Its more of survival thing.. or to protect her son.

Aslo i'm so sad for JT, he's a good guy but he's in a mess that everyone around him has caused.
based on episode 11 preview, many secrets are gonna be revealed, almost looked like everything but JY's illness. that feels much faster than the pace of the first half.

I think that Nul changed her mind about hitting the Congressman at the last second. If you watch the scene she turns her wheel to the right at exactly the same time that Joon-Young pushes him out of the way. I think even if Joon-Young hadn't interwined she would have missed the Congressman. I can understand how her emotions drove her to it initially but i don't believe she is evil.

Kim Woo Bin's performance in this episode was incredible in how he could change from a straight face, a loving boyfriend to a white night with so much emotion. I literally cried when his mom came to rescue her son. That's how powerful the drama was w: Kim Woo Bin. Good bye to those who doesn't appreciate this drama. Best to leave their negative comments elsewhere. This is the only drama that got me addicted and entice me into their world of undeniable love. How much Joon Young loves Enul reminds me so much of Romeo & Juliet but it's so sad Enul or mom are aware that Joon Young is dying ?. Enul makes me so mad for her stupidity in this episode that Joon young keeps rescuing her & putting himself in harms way for her. There is no denying that Joon young loves Enul unconditionally & with all his heart... His world now is all about her, his forever love. So cute when he shop clothes for her. I'm sad rating is low but who cares because Kim Woo Bin's performance is superb and I'm still going to watching this drama until the end (hopefully a happy ending w: Enul & JY marry ?).

Did you miss the entire montage of her memories when she tried to run the guy over? That girl was lost in her own grief , guilt and anger that she just wanted to make him feel.the same pain she was feeling (he was laughing on the phone after him and his daughter threw money on her dads alter) , she never really had a conscious thought of him actually being hurt from it until almost the end when she is shocked out of her trance. It's all there in the montage and her facial expressions.

I am surprised by the fact that Joon-Young persuing Nul knowing very well he is going to die hasn't been a major topic of discussion. I understand that he loves her and it sucks he has lived his life as a lonely person and regretting what he did to Nul five years ago but isn't a little bit selfish that he hasn't been shown to feel conflicted by the fact that she might fall in love with him and then when he dies, she is the one who has to live without him?
Or are we to only look at it from his perspective: going to die soon anyway so diving head first into the sea of emotions for the last three months. You know, life-is-short-so-live-without-fear kind of thing.
Or is it "it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all"....did I answer my own inquiry?
Okay, carry on.

I know I've brought it up in prior episode comments. My belief is that Joon Young lied when he said he's only loved her for two weeks. He's loved her for years, and already did the noble idiot thing after her car accident. He gave her up and his ambition to be a prosecutor. When he knew he was going to die, he had her found, probably to leave her some money, but he wasn't going to contact her.

But she then appears in front of him, persistently tries to make the documentary, and moreover now does anything for money. I think that money grubbing is what persuades him. He just decides to go for it. He's dying, and he'll make her rich, and she'll get over it. Why not be happy for a few months.

Honestly, I feel like it's not worth it for him at this point if he just wanted to spend a few months in love and happy. She's trouble, leading him from one disaster to the next.

What I find surprising that hasn't been condemned as much as it should is that she just tried to murder somebody. She also takes bribes that could do incalculable damage because she didn't do her job. Former journalist here - that's reprehensible to me. Yes we know she needs money. Yes we know she feels justifiable anger at the prosecutor. Neither reason in any way excuses her actions, and I'm finding it difficult to like her right now.

I agree with a lot of what you are said. The writer(s) have definitely made it very difficult to like her at this point but I feel like the audience forgives Joon for his crimes or is at least a lot softer on him that they are on her.
He also stole crutial evidence from her. Actual evidence that would have revealed incriminating information about his father who, at the time, held a very important position as a procecutor. Yes, after this incident Joon gave up his dream to become a prosecutor because he realised what he did was wrong. But that theft led to her being RUN OVER and a potential evidence to remain hidden allowing his father to hold an even more important position of power currently.
So why is it harder to forgive her taking bribe to stay alive (loan sharks) and to feed her young brother (her number one treasure) but easier to forgive Joon who also carried out an equally bad crime to save his father's IMAGE?
Furthermore, it has always been him who has been putting them both in difficult positions. She never grabbed his hand in the presence of cameras to walk off with him. He did. He put them in a position where everyone made her into a "gold-digger", trashed her online etc.
Also, I have commented earlier but I am pretty sure she changed her mind about hitting the Congressman at the last second as you can see her turn her steering wheel to the right at the exact moment Joon pushes him. She would have missed him regardless of Joon's intervension. I mean still VERY messed up in the first place but she literally just had money handed to her by the man who worked hard so that her father never got the justice he deserved. Pretty sure I would have screamed in his face that he couldn't remember my face after that. Like that case literally set him up with his current position (in cahoots with that weird man and his murdering daughter) but he remembers Joon's face whom he encountered for a few minutes ONCE.
I can't believe I wrote such a long message defending her, I mean she is FLAWED but so is he and it just rubs me wrong that he is always put under much softer scrutiny.

This episode is what I wanted to occur somewhere along last week already. Where Suzy's Eul does something super bad. Now it should be easier for her to completely forgive Joon Young. While I am angered with Choi Hyun Joon, sorry for any spelling mistakes, too and I don't know why he hasn't figured out Hyun Joon - (Hyun) plus Young Ok - (Ok) equals = Joon Young. Lol!!! How clear is that. Eul is a remorseful person and it is clear that she accepted a bribe in settling her fathers case, poor Jik. I still think that Joon Young is doing nothing wrong in pursuing her from now on because she clearly and openly to us as an audience, Jik and JT through her diary, was totally in to him from their very beginning in high school and I think Joon Young without wanting to be a prosecutor anymore knows now that he too felt the same way from the moment he met her, I think he actually saw a brave girl in her hence carrying her fathers foto in the funeral. The brave girl he has deep feelings for similar to Choi and Young Ok.

She didnt take a bribe for her father's case. She settled. That is how some legal cases are dealth with before reaching court. If you are able to settle (usually means meeting some sort of conditions or accepting money) in the presence of lawyer before the case escalates to court. For her it meant not wasting away protesting infront of the prosecutor's office fighting an already lost battle and going back home to take reaponsibility for her little brother. Yes she had to give up and forget her pride but i think that is a little nobel in itself. Still i am not satisfied with any of the excuses made on behalf ofJoon so far. He is still as bad, if not worse in some situations than Nul in my opinion but not a lot of people give him the same grief.

While I am interested by both dramas there is something particularly captivating in KWBs overall performance in UF. The plots are totally different and I get why they are being compared, I can't believe it but I get it. I will watch W when I feel like it because I know LJS is good at his job too and I need to see what he will do with his character. I feel that it is 'stranger than fiction' for lack of a better phrase that these two are being compared in terms of content though, well other than KWBs JY appealing to the 'writer' to save Eul and he will give up his happiness. Well that was a successful 'prayer/wish/appeal', only now the writer is going to kill him off? The same thing with LJSs Kang Chul, the writer of the comic was trying to kill him off so he does what he actually taps into that world and tries to stop the writer from killing him off? Hehe now that should be the only comparison.

I said about not mentioning W in this drama thread for the last ep, just replaced it with "other drama" to avoid a sensitive people and long un-needed subjective comment without understanding each other,

but I get slam for being harsh, I only give suggestion and I am sorry but look at this ep, triggered people came, you can't expect people talk about UF in W cause the majority knew it's a different genre, but when one people mention how UF is better than W, tons agree for no reason and start talking about how W is just a hype, it's inviting people who watch both to disagree too,
just don't fuel your rating anger or the lack of buzz lately by some online accepted,
just like what you enjoy, besides, UF is doing fine,
and if someone said any critic about UF, all assumed that the commenter is W's fan, it make me avoid to came here

it's sad to see that half of the comment is defending how good this drama is without anyone attacking the story, even about Suzy's acting, almost half is not about the drama,
it;s weird since I've seen many people critique other actress but people defended it with good explanation rather than "she is improved", no one saw all the cast's work, it's a normal comment,
