The forecast looks sunny for Jealousy Incarnate
by girlfriday
It looks like we’re in for a cute, sunny romance in SBS’s new Wednesday-Thursday rom-com Jealousy Incarnate, unless you’re Jo Jung-seok (Oh My Ghostess), that is, in which case you’re in for a little karmic retribution in the form of petty jealousy. Gong Hyo-jin (The Producers) stars as a weather forecaster who has gotten over a longtime one-sided crush on rising star anchor Jo Jung-seok, just in time for him to start liking her back and getting huffy about it. An entire drama where the petty jealous hijnks are the main course? I could get down with that.
The new series from the writer of Pasta and Miss Korea is a workplace drama about a broadcast news staff. Gong Hyo-jin plays a scrappy underdog weathercaster who has nothing to recommend her except her dogged work ethic. She got her start as the background model on a home shopping show, where she never got to speak a word on camera, but learned all the speech skills of the MCs while demonstrating products in the background. She parlays that into a job as a weathercaster, and has her sights set on making it all the way up to the evening news desk as an anchor.
Jo Jung-seok plays the macho anchor she had a crush on when she first joined the news team. He’s proud and competitive and knew that Gong Hyo-jin liked him, but he never gave her the time of day. She nursed the one-sided love for years, but then three years later he returns from a long-term assignment abroad, and the tables are totally flipped: Gong Hyo-jin now has a crush on his best friend, third-generation chaebol Go Kyung-pyo (Answer Me 1988), and he’s left out in the cold nursing a belated crush on her. Muahaha. Payback’s a bitch.
Co-starring are Seo Ji-hye (Punch) as a successful anchor, Lee Mi-sook (Rosy Lovers) as the team’s sunbae anchor, and Park Ji-young (Tears of Heaven) as the department head and everyone’s boss. Lee Sung-jae (Mirror of the Witch) plays a chef who romances both Lee Mi-sook and Park Ji-young.
Clearly two-timing is the name of the game in this drama: The posters call it “a two-timing romance that triggers basic instincts.” In the latest teaser, Gong Hyo-jin’s character gets belittled at every turn for being worth only sixty seconds of airtime, and she meets Go Kyung-pyo on a flight where he says he’s a fan even though she always predicts the weather wrong, heh. She runs into Jo Jung-seok and tells him that she’s done pining over him now, which naturally starts to bug him. See, you always want what you can’t have! I think I’m going to enjoy his karmic downfall.
Jealousy Incarnate will be a 24-episode Wednesday-Thursday drama, and it premieres August 24.

Oh this looks like so much fun! Can't wait to see Miss Gong back at what she does best :D
On another note, we already have so many good dramas to watch and almost 3 interesting dramas are starting next week. I guess I am not going to sleep for the next couple of months! Priorities, you see.

Don't worry about ratings. This drama takes 24 ep, fight against Shopping King Louie and On The Way To The Airport, they can't find this drama.

Aren't 24 episodes too much? I see it as a light rom com with the basic premise only being about jealousy and I think 16 episodes would be enough. Unless obv they have enough source material and twists to keep us entertained.
Does someone else find some issue with the colours and lighting? Why are they so dull and sepia-ish? Maybe they are the flashbacks but the entire trailer is the same.

I agree about the episode length...even 20 episodes seems too long for a premise like this.
Early prediction: the first 8 episodes will be cute and light, and then the writing team is going to panic because there's not enough conflict to complete the series run, so they're going to throw in a bunch of unnecessary angst at the midway point that'll completely derail the story and make the audience forget why they ever liked the show to begin with. Anyone wanna take that bet?

24 episodes does seem too many for a light romcom. 12-14 feels about right for premises like these. Kdramas should take a page from jdoramas.
But I do trust the writer and I loved loved Miss Korea. So I'm all for 24 eps lol.

I've never felt like this writer does much in terms of angst, to tell you the truth.

Angst probably wasn't the best word to use...maybe "doldrums" is better? I'm referring to the part of the story where it feels like the writers have run out of interesting plot points and are just twiddling their thumbs until they can start sprinting for the finish line.
This "doldrum-mode" can take the form of resets, time skips, new story arcs, new conflicts, etc. that don't really move the story forward but also aren't necessarily instigated by "my pregnant wife was hit by a truck and woke up with amnesia and also maybe she's my sister???" levels of angst.
However, these parts do tend to be less joke-filled than earlier episodes, which makes it less fun for me to watch. For example: Remember that part of Pasta where the two leads have a stupid argument about jajangmyeon, and then the male lead abandons the female lead on the side of the road? It's just a pointless conflict that doesn't really go anywhere, and it detracts from the cuteness that made the show good in the first place.

I get what you mean.
To be honest, I'm the type that lives for (romantic) angst, pain, and tearsssss; love triangles and all that. But I think the writer does a good job of keeping that to a minimum while making the show enjoyable even at some of the low OTP points. I always expect a couple to go through some ups and downs. As long as it's not an off and on again type thing, I'm fine.

I agree, 24 episodes seems too long for a premise such as this. I don't mind a "sunny romance", but how are they going to fill 24 episodes without dragging the story endlessly. There is a high chance of this drama falling apart in its second half, despite the good cast.

Yes, me too. I was so excited about this drama the whole while, until the last line in this news post. 16 episodes are more than enough. Noble idiocy and angst are not sunny.

Miss Korea has a lot of side characters that are awesome, well fleshed out, and have their own interesting stories to tell. If this drama is like that then there should be enough material for 24 episodes. Fortunately the writer does not usually go the noble idiocy route. Pasta has none, and when Miss Korea started to go that way it was immediately called out.

100% agree. A lighter rom-com should never really have more episodes than 16. Going beyond that, they start to fill time by creating useless, new plots. Despite whatever actor/actress you have on the project, the only one who bears the responsibility to make 24 episodes work decently is the writer.

I know what the producers were thinking. Well, here it is:
Producer: hey, lets make this a drama 24 eps.
Writer: huh.... Why 24? I wanted to make it a 20 ep.
Producer: So that if our ratings sucks SBS will not be able to cut more tham 4 eps which means we will be able to make 20 ep, therefore it's a win-win situation for both of us.
Writer: YOU R A GENIOUS!!!!!!!

True, at some point manufactured angst will be thrown our way leaving us scratching our head and pulling our hair in frustration. 24 episode is absolutely unnecessary. 12-16 would suffice.

Two of my favorite K-drama actresses who are absolutely awesome actresses and lovely in an non-cookie cutter manner are Gong Hyo Jin and Kim Seul Gi. So psyched to see both of them in dramas these days!
Also, Sun Woo-ya! I wonder who's going to win my heart between you and Chef-nim. lol.

Talking about reply curse, Seo In Guk's comeback after reply was master sun with GHJ, but it did great. Eunji's comeback after reply was the wind with song hae gyo and jo in sung and that one was popular too. As long as he's not the 1st lead, the curse wont work on it. I believe so. But lets hope it wont work on park bogum sooo we know it's just a rumor not the truth. Hopefully.

24 episodes? Oh nooo... even when it comes to 16 episode dramas, I start to clock out around 12. I hope this is good enough to keep me interested and we aren't due for some long-winded unnecessary angst in the second half. I'm loving the cast and visuals so far, please be good!

Wow. Is this new?
I was chuckling as I read the plot. I am so watching this as an uncomfortable JJS is a joy to watch. And I've become a fan of GHJ after her last few dramas. I would admit- she looks so perfect as a career woman here.

Yes 24 episodes are indeed
toolong but I wouldn't mind just watching GHJ and JJS bicker over everything the whole time. And since Jung Sang-hoon is also in this if the writer has run out of material, just make his role bigger and let him do neverending ad-libs with JJs...oh and give them a guitar, they'll easily fill the show. ?

Wow, I can't remember the last time I watched such a long rom-com. I love the writer though, and I think the way that they tell a story...they can actually go on and on. Miss Korea was 20 episodes wasn't it? And I still feel like there could have been an episode or a couple episodes more. So, I'm not worried, actually. They have a very slice-of-life style and they do more with less rather than those who do less with more.
I'm loving the styling here and the posters are bright, minimal, and fresh. It's gonna be nice to watch this in the Autumn months, I think. Also Lee Mi Sook has never looked better!

It's funny how GGP merely makes a comment about how weather forecasts are always wrong and GHJ just jumps to the conclusion that GGP had been watching HER forecast specifically and that must mean he's her fan. Which says something about her character.
