Moonlight Drawn By Clouds promises unpredictable, hilarious, heart-stopping romance

I love the outright comedic tone of the Moonlight Drawn By Clouds promos, which acknowledge the outrageousness of its premise — the crown prince falls in love with his eunuch, who’s a girl passing herself off as a man — and are going after that absurdity full-force. I have a lot of fond memories of Sungkyunkwan Scandal, which had a similar crossdressing-in-Joseon setup and a strong humorous bent, but Moonlight is taking a much more aggressively comedic approach and seems like it’ll one-up it with its girl-in-disguise hijinks.

Here we’ve got a fresh batch of posters featuring the two main leads: Park Bo-gum (Answer Me 1988) as the crown prince, and Kim Yoo-jung (Angry Mom) in her feminine persona, before (or maybe after?) she enters the palace to attend to the prince.

There’s also the second official teaser (or third overall, if we’re counting that hilarious song-and-dance number, where the captions alert us to the unbelievable rumors swirling in the palace that the prince has fallen for his eunuch. It has the courtiers in a tizzy of shock and awe, while the show promises a “risky, secretive, unpredictable, already entertaining heart-stopping romance,” the likes of which “never have been found in history before.” It’s a tall order, but I find I’m looking forward to seeing the show live up to it.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds follows Monday-Tuesday drama Beautiful Mind, although technically we’ve got the Rio Summer Olympics in between; it premieres on August 22.

Kim Yoo Jung looks ethereal and beautiful. No offense to IU (she's pretty and a decent actress too) but I always pictured her to play Ruoxi in Scarlet Heart and it's ironic to think that her drama is up against Scarlet.

very good job indeed.

my only fear is that i go in expecting a comedy (as per the promos) and instead it turns out to be a serious show. Nothing kills the interest (& ratings) faster.

As a comedy, i would totally tune in. So i'm going to cautiously check out the first 2 episodes before Scarlet heart is unleashed

I am too much of a fan of the Japanese version (Chiaki Senpai!!!) that I couldn't get through the first episode, sadly. Recaps and reviews weren't glowing also so I didn't get to revisit the complete series. Which character did he play there?

Required fields are marked *

Don't remember his name, but the really famous Cellist. He is the main romantic rival (in the korean version). He was super cute and endearing in the drama, but overall I didn't really like the show that much. I even LOVE Joo Won, but it just fell pretty flat *ba dum ching* for me. I never watched the Japanese version and I'm afraid it's ruined for me now.

0

I actually wasn't a fan of him in Cantabile. I found him boring and not very engaging. I think that was just bad writing for his character though. Because then I went and watched I Remember You and was blown away by his phenomenal acting skills.

Same here. I completely forgotten about him being in that drama and I thought I saw him in IRY for the first time and for some reason I imagined him as a bit cold persona add to that I was even more weirded out by his nickname Bogummy lol that was until I was introduced to Taek ? It snapped me out of my illusion ?

0

I know.. Even I am disappointed in myself! hahah

Never really liked SIG that's why I didn't bother checking out IRY before. But now that I may have just fallen in love with him too in Police squad 38, I think I can give it a try. :)

Thank you for the recommendation!

I would say you would see shades of Jung-do in Hyeon (Seo in Guk's character) in I Remember You, so I think you'll like it right away. And as everyone said, you will really enjoy Park Bo Gum's portrayal of Lawyer Jung in IRY! I watched this right after Reply, and to me it was really weird seeing Bogum play a completely different role from Taek, and came to appreciate how good he portrayed his characters in both dramas.

0

I think IRY would feel oddly less stressful watched after 38 police unit. there are not as many twists, just the tension created through dialogues and crazy good editing, background music and acting...there are not as many characters to keep track of either

so strange to say this. but yeah. I feel like IRY is a vacation compared to the twists in 38

I Remember You is the first drama that I've seen Park Bogum in and I've been in love since then. When Reply 1988 promos came around, I was afraid that the character Choi Taek might be super cold and calculative, lol. That's how much IRY's Lee Min left an impression on me. When I saw the first Reply 1988 episode in which Taek sports a bowl cut, has a permanent baby pouty face, and acted like the Neighborhood Babo, I was shocked. xD

I don't think I've ever seen a sageuk that takes place during this period. There seems to be a pretty big gap between Jeongjo and Gojong, the only example I can think of atm is Dr. Jin lol. I guess this was around the time the Kims of Andong developed a stranglehold over the court and royal family and Joseon never got back on its feet, but this genre is all about failed history.

I mean, not that I'm expecting any history from this. But it's interesting nonetheless. (Also, totally random, but based on the little bit of research I've done, but apparently Prince Hyomyeong actually really enjoyed dancing lol. Not the line dancing variety of course, but yay for random bits of historical accuracy)

Hyomyeong was indeed an extraordinary prince, a very artistic prince.
Bo Gum and Yoo Jung went to practice 'geomungo' a couple weeks ago. I think we'll get to see crown prince and his eunuch playing that traditional instrument in the drama.

0

You are such a teaser lol.

0

Btw this drama is around the same timeline as Sangdo (1779-1855). Prince Hyomyeong (1809-1830).

They might mention Im Sang Ok (our famous Joseon merchant) or Kim Sga-hat, the famous poet of that time.
Love the fact that this timeline is identified by regular citizens and their work (a merchant and an intelligent scholar turned poet).

I love Kim Sga-hat's story (he was part of the Andong Kim clan). The origin of his name and finding out that his grandfather was the traitor that he wrote about in the state exam etc.
I think you'll remember him. He was played by Jung Ki Sung in Sangdo.
(I need to watch it again. Such a great sageuk it deserves a 2nd 3rd watch.)

Kim Sat Gat (Kim Byeong Yeon) will be played by Kwak Dong Yeon in this drama. He is a close friend of Crown Prince and also an important person to Hong Ra On. Sat Gat and Ra On both came from traitor family. In the novel, she's the descendant of Hong Kyeong Nae.

Secret Door *sigh*

This is definitely a sageuk for the fans of the novel and the actors. It may spark some discussions about the history here and there which I do enjoy.

I hope it'll be better than expected. Kang Byung Taek is the executive producer. He also directed Jeong Do Jeon <3 and a couple other sageuks like Emperor of the Sea (my first Chae Si Ra drama).
I think I'm trying to convince myself that this is in good hands haha.

0

Well, that's a good sign! I am completely addicted to Jung Do Jeon btw. I've been watching it like crazy for the last two weeks? three weeks? and now I only have two episodes left. I'm nearing the first strife of the princes and Ahn Jae-mo is breaking my heart ;__; I don't want to say goodbye to Yoo Dong-geun and Jo Jae-hyun, either haha.

I have to say, looking at the kind of talent behind the camera and witnessing Yoo Dong-geun and Jo Jae-hyun pour out their hearts and souls, I do not understand why anyone thought 6 Flying Dragons was a good idea. I think 6FD was a ratings success (iirc not as successful as JDJ tho?), but if I were Kim Young-hyun I would have picked another era for sure. After such an unforgettable performance, Jo Jae-hyun owns Sambong and even an actor like Kim Myung-min can't be expected to put his mark on the role. Ditto Yoo Dong-geun and Cheon Ho-jin. I wouldn't even put Yoo Ah-in up against Ahn Jae-mo here tbh.

0

I thought Kim Myung-min was wasted in SFD. He is still Admiral Yi to me.

The rating wasn't as good as DJD. Maybe she thought that a younger lead would get more out of the audience. The women tuned in but the men weren't into the fictional fairytale part of it.

I like the real life YAI but I'm not into his acting.

0

There are a couple actors I'm afraid to admit I dislike watching, and he's one of them haha. I literally can't deal with him though. No matter what kind of person he's portraying, no matter what emotion he's trying to convey, he always has the exact same schtick--tilts his head, wrinkles his brow, and over emphasizes every.single.line. But idk, he gets so much praise that I always wonder if I'm missing something.

I wonder what Kim Myung-min will do next. Hopefully something good :)

0

Bit bothered by the fact that PBG is an adult and KYJ is underage.. hope the romance will be minimal and the trend of pairing adult actors with adolescent actresses would die out soon tbh.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree that the whole underage actress with older adult actor needs to stop. Mostly because there are so many talented adult actresses that are getting overlooked because they aren't 'young' enough to get roles. Especially actresses over 30.

However, I don't have an ick factor about the two having a romance in the show. Mostly because this is for a fictional story that is being acted out by fictional characters. If this was a real life romance, then yes, that would be wrong. But these are professional people playing fictional parts.

0

Required fields are marked *

That doesn't make since. So if a show is about real life people and they cast a professional 16 year old actress with a professional 26 year old actor...what is the difference? They are still professionals playing a role.

I'll be tuning in without a second thought. I was so engrossed in Scarlet's 6-min long preview and my little nostalgia with the Chinese version I missed the promo for this one completely. But then the next day on Soompi when I spotted KJY and PBG's names on the title of a thread I was like, 'damn what have I missed out on all this while'. This drama might not have the epicness that Scarlet is portraying in all its teasers and previews, and it might not be an emotional ride like child- Moon Sun and I Remember You, which is what brought out the best (so far) of KJY and PBG's acting skills, but just seeing these two fav is enough for me. Can't wait for the day when KJY comes of age, because she and KSH are my two fav child actresses right now.
