KBS strikes Yeon Jung-hoon sageuk from official schedule

 photo YJH1.jpg

Epic historical drama Dasan Jeong Yak-yong is no longer in the works. KBS recently gave an official statement that they have halted progress for the drama, which they had originally planned to broadcast next January. While there is a possibility that it may still be slated to air later in 2017, it seems pretty improbable at this point.

Dasan Jeong Yak-yong was supposed to be a 36-episode sageuk about an influential Joseon scholar who made sweeping progressive reforms under King Jeongjo’s reign. Yeon Jung-hoon (Mask) and Ryu Jin (Run, Jang-mi) had already confirmed to star as the powerful philosopher-monarch pair. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a little longer to see these talented actors on TV again.

The primary reasons that KBS cited for their sudden announcement were “unpredictable changes in the media atmosphere” and the “decline of the advertisement market.” To wit, KBS and their corporate sponsors didn’t think that this drama was going to make a lot of money in the current entertainment environment. Maybe KBS thought that the recent crop of sageuks would decrease enthusiasm for another next year, and thus affect sales? Or it could be that they thought having Dasan Jeong Yak-yong would be historical drama overload because they’d be airing Hwarang at the same time.

Not going to lie, considering KBS’s record in the past year, it isn’t seeming like the most thoughtful of broadcasting stations these days: from delaying production and then cutting back Beautiful Mind with the Olympics as an excuse, to burning bridges with partners by setting up a production company, and getting into a nasty fight with SBS over currently airing Jealousy Incarnate. These actions seem more rash than wise, when a network that wants to secure its long-term competitiveness in the entertainment world really ought to be going for wise.

In any case, Dasan Jeong Yak-yong has been scratched from the KBS programming schedule for now.

Is KBS trying to see how many jackass moves they can pull before the year is out or what?

Honestly feel sorry for all the innocent professionals working with them right now. It feels so embarrassing and awkward to be associated with a company that's got bad press, especially if their PR people aren't even bothering to act apologetic about it. Who knows how many innocent employees have had other professionals take out their irritation at the station on them and had to apologise for BS decisions they had nothing to do with :/

I'm trying to be as civil as I can...be warned that it's going to be a half-ass effort, like KBS' effort, you know, like
"Here, I told you. Too bad."

Just because they have "Korean" in their station name doesn't give them a right to be rude. And to think that 'connection' is the name of the game in the entertainment industry. Shame on them.

What happened with SBS over Jealousy Incarnate? I must have missed that drama fight.

But isn't their daeha drama a legacy timeslot? They've already been reduced to airing one miniseries a year and nothing else, and now they're cutting it out entirely?! What about its cultural significance? Isn't KBS a public broadcaster? Why am I asking too many rhetorical questions that can all be answered by "money, bitches!"?

putting aside whatever ish is going on with the korean broadcast networks, i can't decide whether to be happy or sad about this. on the one hand there is never enough of yeon jung hoon, but on the other hand maybe i'm just a little bit glad that his next project probably won't be a sageuk. for one thing, i'm wary of any drama that runs longer than about 20 eps, and for another, he's just way too effing pretty to be obscured by a joseon era scholar costume and tacky fake facial hair. besides, his forte is charming romantic comedy and sexy austere thriller. that's what i want to see!

Meh. With such blaring reminders everywhere you look these days that sageuk is dead, hard to get worked up about this. I think I'll just crawl back under my rock and wait for Jung Hyun-min to write another sageuk. Or for Jung Ha-yeon to find a philosopher's stone :(.

Jung Hyun-min worked on JDJ for 2yrs. Hopefully he is working on a new one for fall of next year.

I have very little hope for Jung Ha-yeon. I think he is not coming back :(.

I hope so!!! He's not the best at writing women, but there are a lot of male figures who could be awesome subjects for him to tackle.

I also wouldn't mind a period drama from him. I still have to watch Freedom Fighter Lee Hoe-young, but I think a guy with his level of political understanding and interest in both sides of things would do a really good job with the colonial period, or the beginnings of South Korea.

I haven't seen Freedom Fighter Lee Hoe-young either. Too many dramas to watch and rewatch.

If you are ever bored. There is always Kim Yoo-jung in Moonlight if you can roll with it lol.

I might give it another chance since I love her so much. It's also starting to look a lot more appetizing since I made the mistake of trying Scarlet Heart/Moon Lovers/whatever lol. That show makes Moon Embracing the Sun look like Cruel Palace in comparison.

She is so worth it! Plus...3 of her tv dads are in it. Cheon Ho-jin, Ahn Nae-sang and Lee Moon-sik. They have limited screen time though but it's been a real treat.

Watch Imjin War 1592 if you can. A new KBS1 5-episode faction. Excellent, even better than the movie Myeongryang, rolling waves. Highly recommended to true sageuk fans.

KBS is so flaky. They have no loyalty to their people. It's no wonder they can't keep their writers and directors.

I don't love them but I kind of understand because sageuks are expensive to make and there is not a whole lot of PPL in it compared to modern dramas. They at least have their own set which cut the cost of the production.

I hope they are keeping Kang Byung Taek for their sageuks. I think he is a great sageuk director and producer. Jeong Do Jeon and Moonlight Drawn by Clouds are some of his latest projects.

Yeah, I was really impressed by his work in Jung D-jeon. The battles were very well done, which is all the more amazing when you consider how tight his filming schedule must have been.

I think I liked the pre-DoTS KBS better. They were experimenting as much as they could, they run shows like I Remember You, Healer and Discovery of Love, their Blade Man was a bold decision, Blade an Petal had a magnificent director and their sageuks on KBS1 were bringing home a good number of awards .

It was a tvN-like era for KBS, with good scripts, visionary directors, very talented casts and, if I remember it well, not even one show was cancelled during that time. Sudden success is the worst adviser to anyone, from ordinary people to boards of directors.

I don't remember KBS pulling so many crap moves in quick succession either (*still bitter over what happened to Beautiful Mind). I vaguely remember the biggest(?) kerfuffle for KBS in recent years was the drama behind the scenes for Myung-wol the Spy back in 2011.
