Fire meets water in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Goryeo
by girlfriday
And here I was, thinking that they couldn’t possibly make any more posters or teasers or stills for this drama. But the well of Lee Jun-ki’s beauty runneth deep, and there is no end in sight to the promo for this show. Lee Jun-ki with bloody sword? Check. Lee Jun-ki with music video fog? Check. Lee Jun-ki romancing IU under the lunar eclipse? Check. And for today’s special, we have Lee Jun-ki on fire, paired with IU in water. I see what you did there.
The latest teaser for SBS’s time-travel drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Goryeo is definitely a tonal shift from the serious ones we’ve gotten so far. This one highlights the 21st-century heroine’s fish-out-of-water moments as she first travels back in time to Goryeo, and apparently lands in the princes’ bathing pool? Officially the best drama portal ever. They’re all amused by her, thinking that she’s acting strange because of a head injury (ha), and then of course they all start falling for her one by one.
Maknae prince Ji-soo saves her in the woods and gets a big bear-hug of gratitude, which makes him adorably flustered. Nam Joo-hyuk becomes her drinking buddy and says that she must know how he feels, while Baekhyun becomes her friend. Lee Jun-ki treats her more like a possession and declares her “mine” in front of everyone, but Kang Haneul counters, “In this place, there is nothing that is yours. They’re all my people.” To make matters more confusing, IU says, “It’s my own heart, but I can’t guess where it’s headed.”
Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Goryeo premieres August 29, and will air two consecutive episodes on Monday, followed by Episode 3 on Tuesday.

LOL. How convenient for her to land in the bathing pool, when they were all bathing AT THE SAME TIME.
The promos are getting better and better. The hype is so high now that I'm really worried that it doesn't live up to our expectations. It better be good!!!!

Also the costumes so far look gorgeous. I can't help but think of what could have been if they had decided to make "Bride of the Water God" in its respective time instead of modern age. When I looked at the art of the comic I have to admit that the thing I was looking forward the most of the adaptation was the costumes they would have created, heck even Cos-players managed to pull it off. I'm still disappointed they went in that direction.

I get that tvN doesn't want to splash out on the budget for a sageuk, not even from the writer of one of their greatest hits. But I'm still in mourning for the prospect of those beautiful costumes.

Mind me asking? For what I know, Scarlet Heart is pretty much the most anticipated drama among international drama fans since the released of a 6 minutes trailer for China market in June but I don't know how's the outlook among domestic Korean audience? Since you guys are Korean, do you have any idea? I read a lot about comments regarding the hype but I would like to know if this drama is garnering a lot of interest and anticipation among local audience? Thanks in advance.

if you want to see how korean fans reacted you may check naver or nate.
they're pretty much anticipated this drama...but also cautious since...well, a lot of idol is in it and the biggest name here (in acting catagory) is lee Junki and Kang Hanuel only.

too many numbers, so dizzy. feels like a computering code . isn´t there just Teacher and the Others though... why would you count them, they come in bulk. it is better to weigh them by kilogram
IvoryLight
August 23, 2016 at 6:47 PM
Hmm I could be wrong but I think the numbers have to do with their birth order?
Like the eldest child is a Princess (so she's technically number 1, or 1st Princess) then second child is a Prince (so he's 2nd Prince), then we have 3rd Prince, 4th Prince, the 5th and 6th and 7th kids I'm assuming have passed away... Then we have Princes 8,9 and 10..again assuming 11th and 12th children are out of the picture for some reason and then we have 13th and 14th Prince.
Orrrr the numbers do indeed just count the Princes and the missing ones are dead. Again I could be totally wrong I haven't read the original novel :)

August 23, 2016 at 10:54 PM
In the original Chinese version, there were eleven princes in total, but just six of the eleven princes that were the focus of the story/plot, both in the novel and in the Chinese drama remake. The princes that were mentioned, but remained as flat characters were the 1st Prince, the Crown Prince (presumably 2nd in terms of birth order), 3rd Prince, and the 5th Prince. The remaining princes-- 4th Prince (LJK's equivalent character), the 8th Prince (KHN's equivalent character), the 9th Prince (YSW's equivalent character), the 10th Prince (BH's equivalent character), 13th Prince (NJH's equivalent character), and finally the 14th (JS's equivalent character) all had major roles and were a part of the bigger plot of the storyline

I am so baffled by this drama and its choices, I love it. It seems like they're just having a lot of fun with the premise and really living up to the title of 'fusion' (and also potentially trolling.) After all, whose first thought when hearing the word 'sageuk' is Epik High?
What I'm worried about is that this drama suffers from very vested interests, because of the investments and the internationalization of the drama, which is becoming increasingly clear. The The OST is a YG-fest, which I don't mind because I have a soft spot for YG artists, but AKMU are clearly much better suited for an indie drama OST than a sageuk, as are EXO. These are things that I personally don't care about because I never watch sageuks anyway and am only checking this out- and probably MDBTC and Hwarang- all for the cast. And these artists are far more relatable to me than whoever does traditional sageuk OST's. But the attempt at an international appeal is hard to miss, in all of the choices yet made, which really puts the appeal for the Korean audience- who after all are responsible for the ratings- in question.
Also, I have to admit I'm worried about IU in the comedic scenes. She's one of the rare actors who's actually better at subtlety than loudness. Her emotional delivery is always on point, but the comedic scenes in this don't give a good enough representation of what it's going to come across as. She can manage to convey a lot through very little change in expression, which usually means that the narrative's need for exaggeration is overkill. She's also simply amazing at expressing that feeling of crushing on someone or falling in love (cf: Cindy's mike adjustment scene with Seung Chan, Cindy looking at Seung Chan through the window of her car), so I really hope this drama has given her stuff to work with, rather than just being the object of affection of a bunch of ridiculously handsome guys. I hope she's an active participant in all their dynamics, rather than just looked at from the outside. IU does a great job of looking-from-the-outside herself, she's usually been the one desiring than the one desired (Dream High, Pretty Man, Producers), so I guess this will be a different sort of romantic challenge.
On the other hand, she was good in Pretty Man (as tragic as the drama was by itself), in the comedic scenes, but she didn't have to be loud in that, just silly & adorable (& perverted), which too she manages well. I'm just hmm at all the deer-caught-in-the-headlights gazes that this drama has been giving us, but maybe that's because all those scenes have been bundled together so it looks like scene after scene, rather than paced out, as it shall hopefully be in the actual drama. IU is probably going to be a lot of criticism in the first three episodes or first two weeks, it's almost inevitable, but I trust her and I already know if she's awkward at all, she'll soon be amazing.
Anyway, I'm super excited for this...

Seconding all this, though I think, when it comes to OSTs, I'd take an indie-sounding ditty or two over the horrible high-pitched ballads most dramas choose to blare over any moment that is, in fact, a 'moment' for the OTP. I've loved MC Sniper's songs in fusion sageuks like Chuno and Arang, and those are hardly traditional either - I can live with this.
But I have exactly the same worries you do - that this might be more focused on appealing to foreign fans (i.e. stupid, which is what they think of said fans) than on telling a good story, and that IU will bear the brunt of criticism if it does or she ends up hobbled by the script. At best, it'll be like Producer - a firestorm of criticism in the first week or so, followed by praise once she gets some room to play. Though honestly, I've been pleasantly surprised by the fact that she doesn't look like a kid next to Lee Jun-ki or Kang Ha-neul despite her own very youthful looks. I'd like to see some of that maturity reflected in her character too.

I would too, like the OST list by itself is a perfectly placed chart-topping artist-list; everyone from Epik High (never getting over this one lol), AKMU, Lee Hi, EXO, Taeyeon, etc. At this point, I'm honestly wishing YG had made full use of their investment and somehow also managed to rope in Big Bang and WinKon. That's the only way any of their artists will ever release new music.
My favorite OST in recent times has been Cheese In The Trap, it was such a mood-setter. Maybe I Like You is still such a great listen. I don't know what the scenario usually is with sageuk OST's, but I doubt any of them are regulars, except perhaps Taeyeon. I think I'm not going to think of this as following in the traditional sageuk footsteps- despite how the first teaser made it seem- which makes sense with the whole time-travelling angle as depicted in the later teasers. So I'm good as long as the OST is good and enhances, instead of detracting.
This does seem very focused on international fans, though, the casting itself was a good enough indication of that. Which is not a bad thing per se, but, like you said, they do seem to think foreign fans like cliched tropes- and you can't even blame them when some of the biggest Hallyu hits have been Boys Over Flowers and The Heirs (and Descendants of the Sun wasn't far off in terms of dialogue). I hope Scarlet Heart sidesteps that landmine.
I've resigned myself to IU getting criticism. What I do hope is that she doesn't get ignored because ever so often the comments are like "well who cares how bad the female lead is, when you have so many princes to look at." I think that's the worse proposition. Not only because this is Haesoo's drama, but also because despite the presence of Kim Soo Hyun in the Producers, people cared about Cindy for Cindy and most people shipped Cindy/Happiness way more than Cindy/Seung Chan. People cared about Cindy's romantic inclinations only because they cared about Cindy, not vice versa. That's the mark of a good character.
But true, I haven't felt any lack in the chemistry area though, she genuinely seems to have great chemistry with all the princes, which I can't wait to see (especially Baek/IU, I refuse to let go of my crack!ship.) Kang Hanuel, if the BTS clips are anything to go by, is pretty much in love with her and looks at her like she's the most adorable creature he's ever witnessed in his life and it's just super cute, lmao.

I'm a little bit worried about the OST too. So far I don't like the modern music they're incorporating into this show. Not that the songs are bad, but somehow they're sound a little bit mismatch with the show. I'm actually expecting something more grand, classic, traditional, and saeguk-esque... something like Queen Seon Deok or Jewel in The Palace OST.
But probably they still have something up their sleeve. Let'
s see
I hope at least they have good music scores... Well... actually I prefer music score more. It's less distracting and enhances our mood better.

That's true, what I'm worried about is a mismatch. Because unless you're going for high-concept art where the music is deliberately mismatched to defamiliarize the audience with the scene and stop total identification or create that sense of jamais vu, a mismatch is just jarring and pulls you out of the scene.
But I'm guessing this was just for the sake of the teasers, and hopefully the usage will be appropriate to the scenes. After all, we still have Taeyeon, Davichi and Lee Hi. But I think, at this point it's fairly clear, that this is definitely not going to be a classic sageuk, they're trying very hard to make that obvious. I think they're going to be borrowing traditions from the classics, and the cinematography will add to it, but it's very trendy. I don't watch sageuk's, so personally I don't mind, and even prefer this, but I don't know what the reception is going to be with the fans of the genre.

I like AKMU, but I really wish the OST was primarily instrumentals- something like the pieces in Arang would have been fantastic.
Yeah, the original BBJX started with light fish-out-of-water antics, then gradually grew more and more serious until was basically a show about the political struggle of the princes and the fight for agency and survival for Ruoxi after the first 1/3. By the end it was practically a full blown tragedy, but the tonal shift was gradual enough to not feel jarring. So I wouldn't be surprised if ppl looking for a serious drama get turned off by the first few eps, and ppl looking for a cute romcoms saeguk drop it once it starts getting much darker.

There is no information about needing Premium to watch the episodes on Dramafever, but I think that will change soon. Although both are watchable neither are outstanding. For me they are only passable. I have watched a first few episodes of Cinderella's Man but Yoona's acting wasn't very good to keep me engaged so I dropped the show. I've skimmed through the first few episodes of Save the Last Dance for Me' starring Eugene, Ji Sung and Lee Bo Young and the story drags at times but feels too rushed at others, to the point that much of the development in the relationship of the main leads seemed to happen off screen and feelings just popped out of nowhere without sufficient building up or context to it.
What worries me the most is that the most recent work of this writer is in 2009, which was short of a decade ago and there haven't been any in-between dramas to judge how the writer has improved over time. It is fortunate that the plot has already been laid out and the writer doesn't have to create something from scratch, plus there has been at least one drama adaptation of the novel as reference if needed. The possible downside is that the historical backdrop has now been moved to Goryeo apart from the shortened show time, so it still has to depend on a capable hand to pen this work into something great.
Tbh I'm as skeptical about the writer as I am about the idol cast, but I hope they'll prove me wrong.

I've watched, both, "Cinderella Man" and "Save the Last Dance for Me".
"Cinderella Man" didn't really stick out or stayed with me, it was a typical 'prince and the pauper' storyline that was very low- key, I found. "Save Your Last Dance for Me" is a totally different story lol It's my all-time favourite drama even up to this day, 10-11 years after the fact <3 The storyline is filled with cliches and standard drama setups with your typical chaebol vs. poor country girl setup, but yea, I still can't help but have a soft spot and love the drama to bit <3 <3 <3

I agree. I don't get what's the purpose of the mask. It better be some sort of vigilante/zorro/iljimae thing going on, because if he's just putting it on for fashion I'm not down.

Mmm....It makes sense from our modern perspective, but I don't think it's something royalty would do in Goryo times, so I feel like it still would not work for me. I guess I could suspend the disbelief though, if it's for that reason :)

He wears mask because of his scar:

He's abandoned by his mother because of that scar...

That's what I thought, and read about too, that he was wearing a mask to hide his scar, but then I started seeing pics of him without the mask, and it puzzled me, so now I tell myself, the pics of him without the mask are early in the show, before he was disfigured, and the pics of him with the mask are after whatever incident left him permanently scarred. Let's see what happens in the drama.

it looks more like something an assassin or leader of bandits would wear, not a prince.. he looks more like a villain and very out of place to me
i watched the chinese version so i also agree with you about the female lead here. there's something about her visual that just isn't as appealing and doesn't seem like a fit with historical settings.

Maybe she's not supposed to fit since she's time travelled from the future?

She may not fit personality wise but actually it was her sould that occupied the body of a girl from that time so visually she was still supposed to fit in.
Anyway most of the princes are modern looking so I don't mind IU's look here because most of them wouldn't fit anyway :D

IU also has a flat oval face with no distinctive features, so maybe that's why

Honestly, I'm back at feeling really wary of this drama. The first teaser was bit a reassuring, but with the later teasers I get the impression the show's going to disappoint me. They give off a very superficial, cliche type of vibe. And the female lead doesn't look half as appealing as the Chinese one (which was not my favorite character, but at least she wasn't the typical drama lead I can't seem to stand anymore).
I'm going to stop expecting anything from it, but I'll give it a try next week and see. Because I really hope I'm wrong and I can have something to look forward to watching while waiting for new episodes of W.

It is him! I love AKMU and while I can't imagine them doing a sageuk OST, I'm still looking forward to it.

Fire and water... the first thing that came to mind after seeing the pics was Rule no. 40 from Rumi's rules of love:
"Love is the water of life. And a lover is a soul of fire. The universe turns differently when fire loves water."
I certainly hope that's what happens here ^_^

I dread the onset of melo in the drama, when those happy smiling faces will change to glum, dark, despairing faces, and the fire that burns in LJK's eyes when he looks at IU will be replaced by cold, cruel ice...

The more promos and trailers I see, I keep thinking: Scarlet Heart: The War of the Bangs
It seems that someone went way out of their way to make sure all the prince's hairstyles are unique, to the point(and I'd have to go back and check some of the formerly posted pics) that they all manage to have unique bangs as well. *chuckles*
I too am hoping the show lives up to the hype. Time will tell!
So if they stop sending out new promos cold turkey, will that be worse because we all might go through unexpected withdrawal? Perhaps I'm giving marketing too much credit...

Is that AKMU I hear in the background??? I'm just add excited about the ost as I am about the drama! But...they must have a luwu character in the drama so that njh isn't "in love" with iu...their friendship in the original was my favorite...I enjoyed it more than the actual romance...

Ha! So glad the princes will be showing some tresses! Very shallow of me, but couldn't get past all the shaved heads in the original so only watched a few episodes of it. Had a hard time telling them apart too. And thank God theyre not wearing those traditional Korean hats too - they might as well be bald wearing those prim head toppers. Really looking forward to a version where the men look attractive to me!
