Age of Youth: Episode 5

This show! I may have had my reservations at first, but I’m now fully invested in the lives of our five housemates as they slowly learn about love, life, and friendships. This episode in particular is pretty damn funny, and it’s all about the boys — whether they’re just platonic friends, potential love interests, or boyfriends who put your heart through the wringer, our heroines are finding it hard to get through a day without thinking about them. Thank goodness for meddling, opinionated roommates who actually push you into action, because without them, who knows where we’d be? Probably in a place that’s a lot less entertaining, that’s for sure.

EPISODE 5: “The reason for loving someone, and the reason for not loving someone #men and women”

Ye-eun, looking miserable, blow-dries her hair while thinking about her boyfriend Doo-young. She breaks down in tears and thinks, “It’s all over. My love is over. There’s nothing more I can do. Oppa, I really liked you.”

In the middle of her tearful monologue dedicated to Doo-young, the blow-dryer shorts, scaring Ye-eun. She drops the blow-dryer and runs out of the bathroom, causing a concerned Yi-na and Eun-jae to peek out. Yay, is Yi-na back?

Ye-eun mutters that things have been off lately in the house, citing an exploding kitchen lightbulb and a clogged toilet. Though Ji-won has a rational explanation for these things, Eun-jae’s in Ye-eun’s camp, saying that other weird things have been happening, like Yi-na moving out (then back in), and Jin-myung’s fingernail falling off.

Pointing to the cabinet, Ye-eun blames the ghost for causing trouble, then asks Ji-won if she can’t kick the ghost out. Just then, the light in their entryway flickers on and off and Ye-eun cowers in fear, thinking the ghost heard her. Ji-won tosses Ye-eun a cucumber and suggests using phallic objects to keep ghosts away, like their ancestors did. But Yi-na has an even better idea: They should throw a party, filling their place with real men instead of cucumbers.

Ji-won agrees enthusiastically, suggesting that they each invite guys they know; Eun-jae can bring her long-haired crush, and it’s a chance for Ye-eun to meet someone new. Though Ye-eun’s unsure if Jin-myung would be on board for the party, Jin-myung just tells them to do whatever they want, since she can’t attend anyway.

The last obstacle is their landlord grandmother, but even that hurdle is cleared easily, as she’s on her way out of town for a vacation. The four roommates are all smiles as they bow goodbye to her.

Three days before the party, which they’ve dubbed the “Night of Men.” Ye-eun brushes her teeth furiously as she recites a poem in her head that encapsulates the anger she feels toward herself for allowing her boyfriend to treat her so badly. As she stomps out of the house, she thinks to herself that while she was dating Doo-young, her self-esteem really went downhill.

She recalls all the ways he let her down, from giving her those perfume samples for their one-year anniversary to how he’d frequently ignore her texts or calls. In cooking class, her anger grows as she thinks that all he ever wanted to do was have sex. She hacks into her chicken carcass with a cleaver, turning it into pulp.

Eun-jae sits in class, listening to a lecture on the five stages of grief. But Eun-jae can’t concentrate — she’s barely keeping it together as she steals glances at her crush, who sits just a few seats over. She continues to stare at him after class ends, not even noticing that her other sunbae Jong-yeol is standing in front of her until he waves his hands in her face.

Eun-jae’s not that excited to see Jong-yeol at first, but then says she has a question for him. Jong-yeol’s pumped that Eun-jae is finally showing some interest, and scrunches up his face in happiness when she gets close to whisper in his ear: “That sunbae… does he have a girlfriend?”

But haha, Jong-yeol completely misses her reference to the other sunbae, only hearing the part asking about a girlfriend (which can also mean, “Do you have a girlfriend?”). Thinking she’s asking about his own status, Jong-yeol lights up and says that no, he definitely doesn’t have a girlfriend.

Eun-jae’s thrilled to hear this news, and jumps up while Jong-yeol’s in mid-sentence to follow her real crush out of the classroom.

Ji-won spots a friend in the hall and follows him up the stairs to invite him to their house party. He agrees to come as long as there’s booze, but he ends up taking it back when Ji-won starts teasing him, warning him not to use her invite as an excuse to finally make her his woman, ha.

Yi-na inappropriately gasps and moans at lunch over some too-spicy ddukbokki, embarrassing her lunch buddy and fellow “co-worker” SEO DONG-JOO (Yoon Jong-hoon). She does her duty and invites him to the party, but tells him not to dare try anything on her roommates, who are just normal, ordinary girls.

As Yi-na and Dong-joo leave the restaurant, Yi-na’s stalker man OH JONG-GYU appears from around the corner. His attempt to follow Yi-na is thwarted when someone calls out his name, and he watches Yi-na disappear.

Jong-gyu’s acquaintance asks him when he got out (of jail?), then asks if he’s found “the bitch” that he said he wouldn’t leave alone once he was out. His eyes still fixed in Yi-na’s direction, Jong-gyu replies that he did, in fact, find her.

Jin-myung works her late shift at the convenience store. During a lull, she slumps down and scrolls through texts from chef Jae-wan — the latest one reads, “I miss you.” She thinks back to her last conversation with him, when she told him not to like her, and types out a response to him: “Me too.” But she can’t send the text, and puts her phone down. Meanwhile, Jae-wan just happens to be standing across the street from the store, looking in at her.

Two days before the Night of Men. Ye-eun’s now in depression mode. Her bus passes by a car wreck on the way to school, and Ye-eun starts imagining that it’s Doo-young that’s been hurt. Next, she imagines him getting ready to hang himself, so devastated over their breakup. Alarmed, she ends up running off the bus and racing to Doo-young’s place. She gets to his floor just in time to see him opening the door for a deliveryman, and she deflates, seeing that he’s totally fine.

Eun-jae heads out to the field to watch the guys in her department play a game of soccer tennis (I think?), smiling shyly as she focuses in on her crush. Jong-yeol’s playing too, and when he notices Eun-jae in the stands, he kicks his game into high gear, totally showing off for her.

She only has eyes for her other sunbae though, keeping her eyes on him even as Jong-yeol strolls right up to her after the game. Once she registers Jong-yeol’s presence, she has another question for him: which does he prefer between “Sunbaenim,” “Sunbae,” and “Oppa?” Jong-yeol can’t stop himself from smiling at the “Oppa,” and tells her that’s the one to use. Eun-jae cringes with embarrassment at the thought of actually using that word to address her crush.

Party prep is fully underway, with Ji-won extending invites to foreign exchange students she barely knows and Yi-na buying a ridiculous amount of party supplies. Meanwhile, Jin-myung can’t stop thinking about Jae-wan — as she’s taking down her laundry, she pauses to look out the window, recalling the time he stood out there after walking her home, looking up at her.

On her way home, Ye-eun thinks to herself, “I wish I could be at peace. I wish you wouldn’t keep popping up in my mind. I wish I wasn’t curious about you anymore… whether or not you’re thinking of me, if you miss me.” Her words seem to apply to Jin-myung too, who’s leaving the house for one of her part-time jobs, looking just as down as Ye-eun. The two cross paths briefly, but they don’t say much to one another, while Jin-myung forces herself to smile at Ye-eun.

Eun-jae is hard at work on a note (on heart-shaped paper!) inviting her beloved crush to their party, only to have Ji-won snatch it away before telling her it would be better to just ask her crush face-to-face. When a depressed Ye-eun gets home and confirms that she has yet to invite a guy to the party as well, Ji-won chides the two of them for not contributing.

Ji-won comes up with an idea to “encourage” the girls to make a move: Whoever doesn’t bring a guy to the party will receive a really scary punishment. Eun-jae and Ye-eun both know better than to entrust Ji-won with picking out the punishment, so Yi-na says they’ll each provide a suggestion and pick one at random.

So the four end up at the kitchen table, each thinking hard about what to put down. Eun-jae’s the first to think of a punishment, and it’s as lame as Ji-won thought it was going to be: cleaning the windowsills. Yi-na’s suggestion is more what Ji-won had in mind: confessing to a random guy and getting his number. Ye-eun’s is to tell the landlord that her lipstick doesn’t suit her, which Ji-won doesn’t approve of either, but she says that it doesn’t matter — she’s come up with the real punishment.

We don’t get to see what Ji-won wrote, but her slip of paper elicits gasps of horror from Eun-jae and Ye-eun, and a delighted smile from Yi-na. Despite Eun-jae and Ye-eun’s best efforts, Ji-won’s punishment makes it into the suggestion box, which Yi-na locks up (and then stores the key in her bra, heh.)

One day before the Night of Men. Ye-eun’s now in acceptance mode and has graduated to singing about her pain in the bathroom.

Jin-myung arrives at the restaurant for her shift, but stops short outside the office when she sees a fellow waitress putting a bandage on Jae-wan’s scraped arm. The co-worker tells Jae-wan to ride more carefully — it sounds like he fell off a bike. Jin-myung watches Jae-wan until he takes notice, then moves past him without a word.

Jin-myung sees the motorcycle in question when she takes a garbage can out back. As she stops to run her hand against the bike, noting the scratches on the paint, Ye-eun narrates that breaking up with someone means not being there for the person in good times or bad, and losing the ability to even be curious about the other person. It also means having to give up on the future you’d imagined with them.

Ye-eun is out on a double date, but she still looks completely depressed and couldn’t seem less interested in talking with the guy. Her friend scolds her for not even trying, so in an attempt to do better, Ye-eun asks her date what he’s doing on Saturday.

Back at school, Ji-won takes photographs of the boys basketball team. When she’s done, she invites the entire team to the party, heh.

Meanwhile, Eun-jae follows her crush into the cafeteria and daydreams about sitting next to him and sharing food. She then follows him outside, but still can’t bring herself to actually approach him. Jong-yeol catches sight of Eun-jae pacing and sighing to herself as she tries to work up the courage to talk to him. He walks over and wonders what she’s doing, and Eun-jae asks him for a favor.

Cut to Eun-jae asking him to attend the party, you know, because she doesn’t want to be on the receiving end of Ji-won’s punishment. But it’s not actually Jong-yeol she’s inviting — she just wants Jong-yeol to relay the invite to her crush (whom he refers to as the “oily guy”). Poor Jong-yeol looks aghast at the request, but he agrees to do it when Eun-jae considers inviting her crush to the party herself.

As Eun-jae hides behind a nearby bush, Jong-yeol delivers her message to Oily Guy — only he mumbles the whole time, so Oily Guy can’t understand a word. Jong-yeol glances over at Eun-jae and shakes his head, as if her invitation was rejected. Eun-jae hangs her head in disappointment and walks away in tears, and when Jong-yeol catches up to her, he offers to buy her a drink.

Eun-jae drowns her sorrows in shot after shot of soju, then squeaks out to Jong-yeol that Oily Guy was her first love. Breaking down in tears, she tells Jong-yeol that she liked everything about him — she even picked out their future kids’ names. An exasperated Jong-yeol tells her it wasn’t love, but ends up comforting her when her sobs grow louder, even letting her wail into his shoulder, tears and snot and all.

With a start, Eun-jae remembers that she still hasn’t found a guy for the party and thus is eligible for Ji-won’s horrible punishment. Jong-yeol (who sweetly wipes her nose, aw) volunteers himself, as long as he gets something in return: three movie dates with her. Eun-jae’s not particularly thankful and wonders why he’d do something like this. Frustrated at her for being so clueless, he tells her to think of it as community service.

Ji-won’s appalled to find Yi-na decorating the apartment by herself while Eun-jae and Ye-eun sleep. But when she checks in on the two, she gives them both a pass — Eun-jae came home pretty drunk, and Ye-eun’s not actually sleeping, but crying in bed. Sometime later, Jin-myung comes home to a dark house and studies the party goods laid out in the living room.

The day of the party. Ye-eun stumbles to the bathroom, her eyes puffy from crying all night. Yi-na and Ji-won are at the store to pick up beer and food, cheerfully grabbing extra in case all twelve members of the basketball team show up.

Back at the house, Ye-eun works on a sign for the party. She has a little Inside Out moment when thinking of Doo-young, with mini versions of herself in different colored wigs telling her how she should feel. The real Ye-eun throws her head down on the table in confusion.

When Ji-won and Yi-na return, Eun-jae and Ye-eun join them to blow up balloons. They each inhale some helium, and soon, they’re giggling at their voices and having too much fun to notice that someone’s phone is going off with a call from “Dad.” Even Ye-eun’s sadness is no match for the girls’ funny voices, keeping their conversation from becoming too serious.

Jin-myung walks out of her room to the sounds of her roommates’ laughter. Ji-won offers to call in sick for her, saying that it’d be really nice if she could come to the party too. But Jin-myung brings the mood right down, telling the girls that she doesn’t have as much free time as they do, so they should stop teasing her.

She gets ready and runs to the bus stop, but just misses the bus as it pulls away. But her timing actually seems fortuitous, as an older ajusshi who just stepped off the departing bus is looking for directions to… the Belle Epoque. While giving directions, Jin-myung looks at the man curiously, then asks him if he’s looking for Song Ji-won. The ajusshi brightens, asking if she knows Ji-won.

Ji-won finally finds her phone when her dad calls for the umpteenth time, and she answers the call. At the same time, Eun-jae picks up a call from Jin-myung. Both Ji-won and Eun-jae’s mouths drop at the same time when they hear the news: Papa Song is on his way to the house.

As if on cue, the doorbell rings. The girls freeze for a minute, Ji-won lets out a horrified scream, and everyone scrambles to clear away the evidence of the party. Yi-na checks the intercom screen, but it’s only Jong-yeol (with flowers!) who has arrived early.

Jong-yeol stands in the entryway, watching the mayhem that’s happening inside as the girls hurriedly try to return the apartment to its normal state. It’s not long before he gets pulled into the fray though, and soon, he’s moving furniture and helping Eun-jae take down decorations.

Jin-myung ends up helping Papa Song with his bags and accompanying him to the house. During their walk, he asks Jin-myung to look out for his daughter, calling Ji-won naïve and innocent. Ha, Jin-myung’s face at that comment is so great.

They finally reach the house, and Papa Song rings the doorbell, calling for Ji-won. Jong-yeol’s able to take down the last piece of evidence — a disco ball — just in the nick of time, and the girls shoo him into Eun-jae’s room, shoving Eun-jae in with him despite her protests.

The other three girls take a deep breath, and Ji-won moves to open the door. Just then, Ye-eun gasps — haha, they forgot to take down some penis balloons hanging on the balcony door. She races over to take them down, while Yi-na greets Papa Song with a formal bow right there in the entryway in an attempt to stall him.

Eun-jae and Jong-yeol stand awkwardly in her room, surrounded by party paraphernalia. Jong-yeol takes a seat, only to find a penis-shaped party decoration under him, which Eun-jae pretends not to see. He asks Eun-jae which furniture items belong to her; when she points out her bed, he swallows hard. Eun-jae doesn’t let that go, asking him why he swallowed like that. Jong-yeol claims he’s just thirsty, then accuses her of thinking dirty thoughts.

Ji-won ushers her dad into her room, and he tries to settle in for a nap. But Ji-won’s having none of it — she practically shoves him out the door, saying she wants him to get home safely before the sun sets. It works, and Papa Song leaves.

As the girls are heading in to re-decorate for the party, Ye-eun finally hears from Doo-young in the form of a simple text asking her what she’s doing. She stares at her phone and thinks to herself that she had an ordinary romance, and she’ll have an ordinary breakup, where one day they’ll forget about each other. She finds this thought both comforting and sad.

Yi-na, Eun-jae, and Ji-won are busy decorating for the party a second time. Jong-yeol helps out, enthusiastically responding to Ji-won’s new name for him: “Eun-jae’s man.” Bewildered, Eun-jae just watches him; when he turns to look at her and sees her looking back at him, he smiles.

Ye-eun waits for Doo-young at a cafe, and narrates that she hopes that the next guy she dates likes her more than she likes him. She knows that breaking up with Doo-young is the right thing to do — there are so many reasons why she shouldn’t like him, the worst one being that he doesn’t like her as much as she wants him to.

Doo-young arrives, and I want to punch that smug look off his face. After some prompting from him, Ye-eun finally speaks, telling him that she’s grateful for the times she had with him, but if they’re to break up, she wants to do it properly. He’s surprised at this, asking if she really wants to break up. As tears well up in her eyes, she shakes her head no. And in a voiceover, she says, “There are so many reasons for me not to like this man. But there’s just one reason why it’s okay for me to like him. It’s because I like him. I like him so, so much.” She breaks down in tears.

Epilogue. Ji-won’s interview mostly covers her tendency to talk about dirty things and her obsession with men. She states that no matter what happens, she’s going to lose her virginity this year, then wonders if she should just grab a random guy off the street.

COMMENTS

I was disappointed at first to realize that this wasn’t going to be a Ji-won-centric episode — she’s my favorite and I want to have her front and center already! Instead, we circle back to Ye-eun’s thoughts this hour (even though for some reason, we end with an epilogue with Ji-won), as she navigates the next step in her relationship with Doo-young. Though I haven’t been the most sympathetic to her plight in earlier episodes, I actually felt for Ye-eun in this one — wrestling with the feelings of knowing someone’s not good for you, but also really liking him anyway, feels real to me. I was rooting for her to hold strong as she went through her stages of grief and came to the (right) decision of deciding to break it off with him.

I think it makes sense that for Ye-eun, who was so invested in making this relationship work, the process of deciding to break up was just as painful as actually being broken up. That said, if she doesn’t end up following through and breaking up with Doo-young, I’m gonna throw something. I mean, what’s the point of going through all that if she just ends up back with him? I want her to grow, and to realize her self-worth apart from her relationship with him. And I hope her roommates are the ones to give her hell if she does back out.

This show is finally hitting the right notes for me, and I’m impressed with the way it manages to provide ample focus on most of our other housemates even as it highlights one girl’s inner thoughts per episode. I loved everything that had to do with the prep for their party, especially as it provided an excuse for Eun-jae to try to make her move on Oily Guy, albeit with some questionable help from Jong-yeol throughout the process. And speaking of Jong-yeol, he is SO adorable with his totally obvious crush on Eun-jae. I don’t even care that he dashed Eun-jae’s dreams by lying that Oily Guy wasn’t interested in her, because all I want is for him and Eun-jae to get together and be super dorky together in love. That smile that he gave her toward the end as they were redecorating slayed me — and it’s made all the better because I think she’s starting to get some idea of his feelings toward her. So. Much. Cuteness.

It’s great to have Yi-na back as a roommate and providing some much-needed balance to the house. We now have confirmation that Stalker Man is not a good guy and that he’s out to get her, so it brings me some comfort that she’s not living alone. On the brighter side, Yi-na and Ji-won are hilarious together, and I can only guess what sorts of shenanigans will unfold at this epic Night of Men party when it actually happens. At this point, I only have one wish — that Jin-myung joins in on the party, and we see her smiling again. What will it take to get all five girls in a room together, happy and having fun?

I've been wanting a drama like this for so long. I love ji won !!!

Ji won doesn't seem to have any self respect, losing her virginity no matter what? That seems so sterile.

After getting stuffed for a few minutes (maybe) then what? I doubt she orgasms. She will feel empty. "An Education" had the best line : "All that poetry and all those songs, about something that lasts no time at all" Not to mention possibly getting pregnant by someone she doesn't care about.

Any dog can have sex, finding genuine love is rare. I guess that is why most people opt for the sex, its all they can achieve.

There's nothing wrong with being a virgin at any age whatsoever, but there's also nothing shameful in a girl wanting to lose hers. It's about the milestone as much as the experience. It's true that her desperation might cause her to make sketchy choices, but I doubt she'd sleep with someone she doesn't like, or that she wouldn't try to make it into a positive, fulfilling experience (or that she hasn't done her research on safe sex lol).

LOL I can't count how many times she randomly told Eun-jae to use condoms.

I feel like she's such a product of the internet. She's an expert on sex, with zero real life experience. I wouldn't be surprised if she had written slash fanfic in high school or something lol.

0

@juniper, I can totally see that from her!

So just because Jiwon wants to experience sex, she doesn't have self-respect? Sounds nonsensical but okay.

Seriously, did you read before you commented? I really think most people just want get their opinion off without reading.

Ji won said "She states that no matter what happens, she’s going to lose her virginity this year, then wonders if she should just grab a random guy off the street."

Nothing wrong with sex, its awesome, but her desperation to lose her virginity to the point where she considers just grabbing a random guy off the street SCREAMS of lack of self respect.

Seriously, READ FIRST, THEN COMMENT. CONTEXT MATTERS!

I think she was joking/exaggerating when she said that though?

For your information, I did read your comments and they are still narrow-minded and offensive. Having casual sex doesn't necessarily mean a lack of self-respect. Having casual first-time sex is strange, but that also doesn't mean the person does not have respect for herself. I doubt Jiwon would really grab a random guy off the street to lose her virginity to, but sex is obviously an important milestone TO HER that she wants to experience FOR HERSELF. Sex may or may not be an expression of love or affection but Jiwon is actually open up to dating to lead to a more intimate relationship.

Seriously, I don't even know why you are spouting all this nonsense about getting pregnant, having meaningless orgasms, and even a condescending jab "any dog can have sex". Rude.

Calm down man

I can see how she comes across as shallow and desperate, but I thought by now we have seen enough to know that we shouldn't always trust what we see. Post-it notes that seem disparaging were written with careful consideration. Lies are not all lies. And family love isn't always as deep as we assume. For now, I would like to think that there will be more to this. No one is perfect and it is because she is not that she will grow in a realistic way.

0

I think Ji won is all talk. She will lose her virginity with the right guy, a guy she genuinely cares about, otherwise she would have had sex long ago. I have some friends like that who like to talk a lot of trash but are really quite circumspect in their behavior, on the other hand I have some really close mouthed friends who are really wild in their behavior.

I mean Eun-jae is clueless and I love how it's frustrating Ji-won lol. It's hilarious and it brings out the protective senior Song in her.

Yeah, that's how the story goes usually: she's trying to loose her virginity at all cost, but eventually she'll do it with the "right guy". Heh, my money's on her sunbae? colleague? friend? Anyway, that guy she invited to the party, She laid it pretty thick how he shouldn't get any funny ideas because of the invitation. I think she's acting uber casually with him just because she's afraid he'll turn her down if she'd ask and that would really sting.

That's a bit judgey. This is probably TMI, but I was the same way as Ji-won. First year of university, felt I was ready and didn't attach any particular value to my virginity. Ended up asking a guy friend and everything went fine, glad to say my self-respect is still intact.

I have a flatmate who is definitely going to lose her virginity this year. It's hilarious how we actually have plan of action, lengthy and well discussed, for the same.
It's amazing how people all across the globe have such familiar situations in their life. I can tick most occurrences in this drama as been there done that.

I love it that Jong Yeol ruined Eun Jae's chances with Oily. I think it's not malicious, and I like guys who actually fight for the girl they like, especially when they're so adorable and respectful like Jong Yeol. Out of all romances I'm mostly invested in theirs. Although I'd like for Jin Myung to have someone by her side, but I have feeling that that romance will end up badly

This episode was freaking hilarious, yet they still managed to put so much depth into it with Ye-eun's inner monologue, I'm amazed.
And never would I have ever imagined that there'll be cucumber jokes and penis balloons in a kdrama. Thank you JTBC. Can we expect to see some toys etc. in one of the upcoming episodes now? lol

This drama works so well for me! It's such a nice breath of fresh air. I'm just rooting for everyone, really. I love all the characters and actually hope there's more to each and every one of them than meets the eye, so I'm keeping fingers crossed for everyone to get a happy ending, bust mostly:

Ye Eun's boyfriend to get a grip and realize how great his girlfriend and that shouldn't be stepped over just because she's nice and sweet. Maybe that's why he's complexed? Because she's too nice and smart and has this `perfect` image that puts pressure on him?

Yi Na's mystery guy to realize that she is so cool and to like her and abandon his initial plan of hurting her.

Everything is just so perfectly bittersweet and sincere, and I can't help rooting for these characters.

I must've watched this ep thrice already but I still LOL at the recap. Yi-na and Ji-won are my favorites too so every time they team up in this ep (the punishment locking and grocery), I can't stop laughing.

I ship Eunjae and her sunbae too, but kinda sad that things are moving along in that ship because I want to see more of Heechul 2.0. His character is hilarious with the hair-flipping and strutting around (even if he was failing in that football/volley game).

Oh, and I'm also kinda mad that we haven't got a Ji-won-centric ep yet! When will we ever get it? We're almost halfway through! Is she the Moo-hyul of this show?

Still, Eun-jae's heartbreak was hilarious. Already thinking about children's names:D:D:D

I hope we get to see more of Oily guy! Even thinking of him gets me in stitches. #WantMoreYoolBinnie

I've been seeing a lot of people whose favorite of the girls is Ji-won; that's surprising to me because honestly... I sort of find her off-putting and/or boring? I can't describe my feelings, but there's just something about her that definitely makes her my least favorite. (I don't hate her at all--love all the girls, still <3)

I can see someone finding her off-putting, but I don't know how she can be boring! :D

Had a convo with a twitter friend who finds Ji-won's jokes encroach on personal space. The butt-poking and talking about wet dreams and stuff to someone (Eunjae in previous ep?) unwilling to listen can definitely be too much.

You can't deny that things happen and convos move when she's around though. Remember the awkward first ep? I think most of that would've been solved if only Ji-won was there to introduce everyone properly and break the ice. I like how she's willing to make a fool of herself just to break uncomfortable silences. If Ji-won didn't exist:

Eunjae would just endure.
Ye-eun would pretend to smile then badmouth when the person is gone.
Jin-myung would tell off a person in very few words which can be misinterpreted as anger. Not her fault.
Yi-na will probably be forthright like Ji-won. That's why she's my fav too. Though she'll only talk when things have gotten worse and she won't couch her words in a funny way.

Plus, Ji-won references so many things when she talks! Business/econ people, philo, harry potter, pop culture... rather than boring, I think I'd find her too much sometimes! It's probably tiring to be with her 24/7. LOL

JTBC has the courage to air such shows and content. Though i sometimes feel embarrassed due to all those 18+ jokes.

Ji Won the energy boost of the Belle Epoque is my favourite too. Jin Myung still is distant from other girls and kind of an Outsider.

Also, i don't understand western to korean-japan fixation on losing virginity. What's so bad being a virgin. Stats provide a different picture of these nations.

There is Too much emphasize on getting a boyfriend so i hope Writer will explore other things of Collage Going Youth too.

It's save to say that Ji-won is the QUEEN. Love her. Her dedication and enthusiasm is so infectious. I don't for the love of dramas understand why she can't snatch a guy, do they really feel intimidated by her enormous personality? Is it perhaps a culture thing? I feel a little defeated that one needs to be overly cute(Ye-eun) and sexy(Yi-na) to have potential lovers lined up.
I felt bad for dad Song though, poor guy just wanted to rest. But the partyyyyy must go on.

Oh, Ye-eun, GROW UP. It's odd she said she "likes" instead of "loves" him. You shouldn't endure this much from people whom you don't even love. Less of this please. More of Jin-Myung and Chef! Her background is plain sad and I can relate to her in that regard so I'm desperately rooting for her.

Yeah, I think Ji-won is just too much for them. If your typical drama bore even the slightest resemblance to reality you would think that it's a gender/culture thing lol--99% of leading men are as overbearing and eccentric as Ji-won without being half as fun, and girls are always falling all over themselves to date them.

Strange thing, I am too much like Ji Won (talkative, optimistic, slightly weird, good looking and a little crazy).
My dates ALWAYS end the same way as Ji-Won, like he laughted at my jokes, gave attention but.... that's it.
So here I'm, reading comments, wondering what I do wrong.
So yap, the part about guys dumping Ji-Won IS realistic and NOT exactly a cultural thing...

Sometimes being good-looking can be a curse for girls. Being unattractive sucks on so many levels, but at least it's easier to separate desperate guys from sincere ones, than to figure out who will look at you as a person, not a body or a face, and actually love you for being you.

I think in Ji-won's case, she doesn't make a real effort to get to know the guys, because she's so focused on making the date fun and leaving an impression on them. She would do much better meeting someone organically than getting set up with them imo, so even if she overwhelmed them at first, she wouldn't scare them away, and they'd probably realize she was awesome and embrace her weirdness at some point.

Have to admit that makes Ji-won so likeable to us is what breaks her on those setup dates. After her last blind date failed she admitted she did the most talking, erm about 80 percent of it which is a lot to take for many, especially when she also got piss drunk. The drinking is also pretty off putting. So yeah, our resident life of the party needs to do some reflecting to meet the one, or more. Also since this show throws in a lot of psychology wisdom I'm afraid Ji-won has her own demons aka secrets that she's trying to suppress behind that cheery facade.
I kinda ship her with her uni Sunbae, however there needs to be a SONG centered episode to get to know him so he can fill us in on Ji-won's backstory, they seem to be well acquainted.

Wait, the convo Yi Na's ajusshi friend was about "a bitch"? The subs I saw said someone to "teach a lesson" and I took that as confirmation he knew her as a child or something. Am very confused...

haven't seen the episode yet but "teaching someone a lesson" is an idiom for punishing or hurting someone, usually as revenge.. of course there's also the innocent, straightforward interpretation where a parent or a teacher might teach a child a (literal) lesson about something :p but it really depends on the context. if the stalker ajusshi is indeed up to no good, he probably DOES intend to hurt yi-na

Woah, I didn't think Ye-eun will grow on me this much, but this ep I really felt for her. Poor girl, she's given her all. You don't just snap out of it even if you want to, it takes time.
Ji-won is simply amazing, love her spirit! Even when things don't work out for her, she mopes perhaps 30 seconds and then she's back up and giving it another go. Gotta admire that!
I wish Jin-myung would be more active in pursuing her own happiness like that, though I can't really blame her for having the defenses so high up. "Real life" is so damn real for her, she's barely holding it together. She cannot afford to gamble like that. But then again, I so wish she'd just throw her caution to the wind, find another restaurant to work at, errr...am I actually wishing for her brother to die? Don't know, it's just so heart breaking to see her completely ironed to the ground by life. It is so unfaaair!

That snot though ?

Ye Eun is totally that friend with the boyfriend you absolutely hate that you suffer through numerous teary nights with but they still always end up getting back together and you can feel your eyes rolling out of your head every time he gets brought up. That being said, I'm disappointed that more people aren't feeling sympathetic towards her. Beanies are a fairly mature online community, so I haven't seen any nastiness here, but I saw a comment on this episode on DF saying that she deserved to be abused by her crappy boyfriend because she wouldn't break up with him and that just made me ☹

Since we've already got the whole murder mystery sub-plot going on...is it too much to hope that the girls have some kind of Chicago-esque band together and just off all the skeevy men in their lives?

The landlady's CGI cat cracks me up btw ?

I'm probably 50% mature in that I want her to be able to move on from that guy...

And 50% immature in that I want her to suffer because she's horrible to other people! It's in the way she talks. She likes to backstab her roommates and I don't know why but she seems to take delight in hating them.

For example, "Eunjae doesn't do makeup" is a valid observation. But she says "Eew, I hate those type of girls who don't even do makeup. They're probably dirty somewhere else too."

And that witch hunt with the boxers. She was so keyed up about hunting down the possible offender, conveniently forgetting the fact that she's guilty of the same offense in the first place.

The snot scene has gotta be one of my favourite kdrama scenes ever!! Kudos to the actress for doing it, too! (Wonder how many takes they did for that scene ...)

That's what I love about AoY: it's a surprising mashup of so many unexpected genres: romcom, murder mystery suspense, revenge, slice of life, social commentary, etc. And the phallic balloons, of course.

Totally disappointed with Ye Eun's dithering about the boyfriend breakup (v realistic - I've had friends who do exactly that, including the yes-we've-broken-up-but-we're-still-sleeping-together-but-we've broken-up thing), but intrigued that Doo Young might have a complex.

First: Jong-yeol is so adorable! Second: I wanna throw something at Ye-eun. Have some self-worth. Maybe it's because I've never been in that situation. Once I realized that a guy wasn't right for me, I ended it, regardless of how much I thought I liked him. It's not really love or even like, if the other person treats you like crap. This whole I-just-like-him-no-matter-what concept is never one I understood. There should be a reason for liking someone, such as they are considerate or honest or empathetic. I have to say that Ye-eun's situation is the one I am least interested in. For me, it's all about Yi-na (yay for her being back!) and Jin-myung, who seems to have the weight of the world on her shoulders. She wants someone there to support her, but is worried that having support will only make her weak. And for someone carrying as much as she is, being weak can seem like a death sentence. Jin-myung, fighting!

I see a lot of comments saying that Ye-eun should break up with douche boyfriend. Even though I really think she can do better, this is often the unfortunate reality for some women( I believe the show does a good job on reflecting real life circumstances to a certain extent). For Ye-eun to break up with her boyfriend would be slightly unrealistic for her character( she's is already so attached to the boy). She would need for something terrible to happen to change her mind - which again is something some women in the real world have to face-very sad :(

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

The even sadder truth is there are lots of girls who reached that "something terrible" part but still stayed with their abusive boyfriends. :(

As a close friend to someone who's like this, it's very hard to step back and let them make decisions but at the same time just be there and listen to the sh*t that guy does. The thing is, as it gets worse, they get alienated from their friends and it reaches the point where if you say anything bad about the guy, she'll be more defensive.

I wish we could just snap our fingers and save such friends from that relationship.

What to even say.

I....love these girls so damn much. But what I love even more is that I could probably list 100 other things I love about this little gem of a drama and still wouldn't be out of things to say. All the little moments, every single episode. This writer has always been fantastic at creating moments that I connect with and remember intently. Here is no exception.

I did get a sinking feeling when it became clear that Ji-won wasn't the focus this episode, BUT I have a little theory on why that is. I just need to wait until the next episode recap to discuss it. I'll be honest, I've watched these recent two episodes like four times already. I've just become so much more invested in delving into these girls' past scars & I'm starting to enjoy the mystery of it all.

I adore seeing all the girls with their love interests/guy friends (well, except for a certain one...). I've already applauded the castings of our ladies, but I love all the actors too. I've never seen Shin Hyun-soo in anything before, but he is so charming here. Can't even be mad at him for getting in between Eun-jae and her crush (though, honestly, I love this dude too, ROFL. The way he actually did take a moment to appreciate the sunset was both priceless and somewhat moving?). I loved how Joon-yeol didn't even flinch at all the snot on his shirt and just went about cleaning her up. SO sweet & pretty much captures why I can't fault him this episode.

I wasn't sure whether Son Seung-won would appear again after I glimpsed him a few episodes ago, so I was glad to see him back. I like his character's chemistry with Song Ji-won, whether it remains platonic or develops into something more. There was one look he gave her that made me think possibly...but I also like them as friends so I'm not too sure.
It's really a wonder what a different role can do because in Healer I had a slight crush on Ji Il-joo and didn't find SSW that attractive. Now my crush on JIJ is fading (poor guy, not his fault) and I'm finding myself charmed by SSW.

I'm also loving Yoon Jong-hoon and his camaraderie with Yi-na. I love the frankness of their interactions. And, I have to say, I think Choi Deok-moon is doing a great job of not coming off as just a creepy, stalker-y, bad guy. It feels like his motivations could be far more ambiguous and I still weirdly intrigued by his relationship with Yi-na.

Ahhh, there's just so much to love here.

SSW and Ji-won are great as friends, but I feel like they'd have an amazing friends to lovers romance. To be honest, I was a little afraid to ship them because I feared I may be reading too much into things. There's been so little screentime with them and this drama is only 12 episodes. But, honestly, if they got together, they would probably become my favorite couple of the bunch. Seeing you guys hoping for romance between them too gives me hope it may actually happen.

I would like their dynamic a lot more if Ji-Won wasn't weirdly assuming that he liked her - I hope she is joking, though. On another note, I didn't really see that small smirk as fond, I saw it more as bad acting or something more nasty and condescending, but honestly, after reading abt how everyone read it as an exasperated yet loving one of sorts, I'm reconsidering. I love them and definitely hope to see more of them. I'm so loving the rest of the couples, too - I love Yi-Na and her colleague's relationship, and I hope she does find love with him, not that creepy stalker dude

Little side note for my darling Eun jae, if a guy cares enough for you to wipe the snot off your nose as you cry for another man, it means he's really, really into you!

And Ye Eun is the poster child for all those women whose husbands and boyfriends treat them like dirt and get away with it. Unfortunately, said abuse only escalates within the intervening years, and by the time the woman has decided she's had enough, a lot of havoc has been done.

As I approach middle age, I often wonder why a great many of my married friends and family(extended, and in laws, too) seem to hit the divorce courts in their late thirties, and early to mid forties. And the answer is more or less the same, one partner put up with a lot of "nonsense" behavior from their spouse until they "had enough" or " grew out of love" and they can no longer tolerate or want to live with said spouse. Sometimes the feelings are mutual from both parties.

In any case my advice to Ye Eun is to "proceed with how you want to define the relationship in future. If you set yourself up to be treated as a doormat, don't expect to change the rules further into the relationship when you have had enough. From what I have seen in life, such changes are rarely welcomed many years down the road."

I love her innocence and cluelessness, the fact that though she's shy, she can be very stubborn and not afraid to speak her mind or stand up for herself when it truly counts. She isn't easily pushed around. For instance, I was very impressed when she abstained from voting to kick Yi Na out of the house when Ye Eun was pressuring her to do so. And she talks back to Senior Jong Yeol all the time. It's really cute. I ship them, I'm just wondering when they'll make it to first base. (Dirty thoughts, la la la!)

2 episodes a week is not enough! And horror of horrors! We are already half way through?

There were so many burst out laughing moments in this episode, even looking at the screencaps now make me laugh. Eun Jae and her boys are a totally hoot.

I am surprised why Yi Na and Ye Eun are not helping Ji Won more when it comes to attracting guys. I only remember Ye Eun telling Ji Won where she went wrong in her last date.

For a start, Ji Won needs to work on her appearance. Don't get me wrong, I find her pretty but not in the way which a guy is drawn to. I love her hair especially in ep 6 when she wore the costume but let's not kid, guys still like the conventional styles like Ye Eun or sexy like Yi Na. Even those which are long and unstyled like Eun Jae and Jin-myung are fine. Her clothes are very bohemian and rather unique, like her hair. But it's neither sweet nor sexy.

Her personality is such that guys will talk to her freely because they see her as 'one of them' but unfortunately that's not what she wants. This was why her date found her interesting and funny but just want to be friends.

I don't want Ji Won to change because I find her so refreshing amidst of cookie cutter types like Ye Eun. But if I have a real life friend like Ji Won, I don't know what I'll do. Stay the same and find a man who appreciates you for what you are? Change yourself if you want to get a guy? Maybe there's middle of the road thing like change in the most superficial way possible, just enough to attract guys but stay true to yourself?

I don't think it necessarily has to do with her appearance. When she was on that blind date she was wearing a very cute and feminine outfit with high heels. It's just her straightforward, no nonsense and tomboyish personality that makes her being friendzoned almost immediately. Not that all guys are only into one type of girls but I know girls like Ji-won and understand that it's harder for them to find someone who sees them as a love interest. All I can tell her is to be patient, not act desperate and basically not change a thing about herself because that's what makes her special and there are definitely guys out there who want to be in a relationship with their best female friend. ?

Yina was about to bow twice to Jiwon's father! Don't they only bow twice to the dead? She's so hilarious. I ship her with the her "co-worker".
