Yoon-ah reconsiders tvN bodyguard drama K2

Huh. Well it’s certainly not every day that someone turns down a project before the casting announcement gains any traction, and then positively reconsiders the same drama a week later, but that’s exactly what’s going on with tvN’s upcoming bodyguard romance drama K2. Girls’ Generation’s Yoon-ah (Prime Minister and I) is up for the lead role (again), and it looks pretty likely that she’ll sign on for the thriller romance opposite Ji Chang-wook (Healer).

I’m not thrilled at the news, since I was hoping for a stronger actress, but Yoon-ah at least has a likable charm and has headlined shows before. I think she’s better suited for light rom-coms, while her role in K2 would be a fairly complex one. She’s up to play the hidden daughter of a presidential candidate, whose mother was a famous star. Since childhood she was the center of so much public attention that it traumatized her, and she became a hikikomori — reclusive, never leaving home — with a panic disorder triggered by camera flashbulbs, and a severe form of social phobia.

One photograph of her taken by chance brings her from France to Korea, where she ends up entangled with a bodyguard who was betrayed by his country (Ji Chang-wook), and her presidential candidate father, played by Jo Sung-ha (Neighborhood Hero). He’s described as using love as a weapon for revenge, and Song Yoon-ah (Assembly) will play his wife, an ambitious woman who has her sights set on becoming the First Lady.

The drama comes from Chuno and Neighborhood Hero PD Kwak Jung-hwan, and Yong-pal writer Jang Hyuk-rin. Should I be disturbed that this writer likes to have his heroines completely helpless and isolated from society, and saved by an intrepid hero? At least Kim Tae-hee in Yong-pal turned out to be a chaebol badass later; maybe we can hope for an eventual turnaround from Yoon-ah’s character too.

According to one source, Ji Chang-wook, Song Yoon-ah, Jo Sung-ha, Lee Jung-jin (Temptation), and Kim Gab-soo (Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho) have already signed on and held a script read, and the production is planning to head to Spain for location shoots.

K2 is set to follow The Good Wife on Fridays and Saturdays in September.

that's a low bar tho haha. I have actually never seen Yoona in anything but I like her as a person. I do wish actual actresses would be cast for this and that drama Kang Ha Neul is in talks for. taht is considering Hyeri. i mean i just...if they have to cast an idol why not cast one with slightly more acting experience and perhaps even talent? *stares longingly at Eunji* but srsly what is up with the casting in dramaland lately? either picking good actresses that are Too Young or actresses that are (mostly) age appropriate but Too Green to play a lead? esp next to a leading man that is talented/seasoned. (like if they were cast opposite an equally lukewarm/bland/inexperience or etc male lead i wouldnt be bothered.) the way it is now it just makes me feel bad for all the genuinely good and experienced young actresses who are just not getting drama roles lately. (are they all too busy with films? what is going on man...)

Obviously you said yourself that you have never seen her in anything, which means you've nerver seen any of her work. So let me just enlighten you, she's only been in either romcoms or family drama series and in a few movies. But she has done more acting gigs than eunji as, so she does have more experience than most. (I don't have anything against eunji) but I just wanted to get that out there. The first episode recently aired, so please give her a chance for this drama.

Also, yoona acknowledged herself that she has only been in romcoms/family dramas. So she wanted to challenge herself, and forget about the prejudice against idols in the acting industry and try to prove herself through this project. She's had acting experience from 2007- up until now. And she will have another project in 2017.

The problem is not that she wasn't good in The Prime Minister and I - it was a light, fluffy show that demanded little of her and so she performed quite adequately - but that K2 is not that kind of show. She would be required to show much more range, plus she will be acting with an extremely talented cast, not just LBS phoning it in.

I wish they would stop thrusting these plastic, pleasant idol girls into leading roles - the blandness turns everything into a forgettable sitcom. Yoona, Suzy, Hye-ri, Krystal... there's just an interminable list of these girls, all with as much fire and grit and passion as a marshmallow. The list of shows that I want to watch, that are interesting and different and acted with talent and individuality, remains frustratingly short. Sigh. Rant over.

I wasnt happy with Suzy's casting either but tbh Woo Bin isnt exactly a masterclass either. he's better yes, but its not a very high bar to clear. Dude doesnt have that much range but he is very charismatic, i give him that. Suzy alas is not. But the drama has way bigger issues than her tbh. (and i'm still watching it for some reason. lol) but to put it another way, WB cant hold a candle to Song Joong Ki anymore than Suzy can hold a candle to Moon Chae Won. (the strong acting is honestly what kept Nice Guy afloat for me for most of that very flawed drama)

I am indifferent to whether a female entertainer got PS or not (unless u meant plastic in a figurative way) but i do agree with this statement. there are talented actresses in their 20's to choose from, they EXIST. so why arent they being cast in things more? and honestly i'd rather they go "older" if thats what it takes to get actual actresses instead of idols in leading roles. (are 30 yr old women covered in bees or smth?). or in other words Where in the World is Han Groo? PLS COME BACK.

about Kim Woo Bin, limited range yet charismatic but miles ahead of Suzy and probably can fix his acting with more projects with better roles. Kim Ji Won anybody, I think she'd make a good match in this drama with solid acting skills.

I agree and a lot of "real " actors and actress in Korea have said the same. Why are they getting passed over when they have trained for years to be in that field. Sadly as entertainment companies run on money they need stars that are going to bring in the ratings with their already established fan base.Yoonah is incredibly popular, whether you like her acting or not her last C-drama was a ratings hit and she was widely praised. I also see a lot of comments that someone will watch a show simply for the eye candy. Sadly talent alone doesn't always get you roles. Suzy is another idol who is well loved by the entertainment scene. As long as she is the nations "first love" she will continue to get roles. Her singing group also disbanded so she's completely free to devote all her time to acting. * oh the horror*

Omona, totally forgot about Han Groo, I am scared for her ever since she got married, completely silent on her end about new acting projects. I know she is wealthy enough that she'll probably never need to work again but still, I want her back, such a talented and gorgeous actress. She'd make a great pair with JCW and TVN loves her, that much I know.

0

agree to disagree i guess, because to date i think, Nice Guy couple were so-so. Better than KWB/Suzy, but not by far. To date the weakest LKH couple still the one from WISFC. Mostly because they had zero chemistry. tbh, not like SJK/MCW had more. They were saved just by the fact, that both are actors.

Agree, PS is nothing to do with acting skill. I'm not fond with these surgeries but this is their personal. Acting ability is the other matter.

0

And "plastic" Park Min-young is still miles ahead of "natural" Suzy as an actress.

Plastic surgery or its absence has no bearing on an actor's ability to, you know, act. I'd take a good actress with obvious tweaks over a "natural beauty" who can't emote or deliver lines. And I don't think I'm alone in that.

Kim Tae-hee complete turnaround happened also thanks to this drama and Joo Won's got another hit, so I'm thinking about this drama back kindly to be honest.

Anyways, since I'm also an avid kpop fan and it happened that I am a SONE, not to mention that Yoona is my bias - I am happy about this news. She will take a role that seems so unusual to her we could applaud her bravery and who knows? Maybe she'll slay it as KTH did and leave people speechless?

Anticipating this drama. I'm already hyperventilating at the thought of Yoona and Ji Chang-wook visuals together at the screen in the same time, man, how beautiful would their children be...

That I will agree with. There is nothing remotely natural about her portrayal and FIP not a complicated sageuk at all.

There are many reasons for viewers to tune in. Director Lee Byung-Hoon to begin with and writer Choi. They worked together in Sangdo which was their best work imo.
This might also be the last sageuk from this fame director and he has a lot of followers.
The story is easy to follow with the same old sageuk tropes that the ajummas are hooked on etc etc.....

0

@Kiara - I really haven't been following the media reactions to FiP but it seems to be pretty indifferently received - even though it's topping its time slot, all the buzz went to Beautiful Gong Shim over at SBS.

But then it's an MBC weekend drama, and that time slot clocks high teens ratings no matter who is in the cast - you could probably switch out Jin Se-yeon with a duck and still get 20 percent.

0

And yeah, I have to say it - if FiP is the best she can produce, with a veteran writer and PD doing everything in their power to make her look good.... she should please give up lead roles, continuing to take them is hubris at its worst.

0

I guess to each his own. Everyone has their own preference and perspective, and that is fine. For me personally, i quit Flower in the prison, because Jin Se Yeon was too lacking for a strong role for me to continue. But then many are still watching, so who knows.

I remember a lot of people were not sure about Yoon ah in Prime Minister and I too (including me...tooo skeptical) But that turned out the be a surprise, she was actually very adorable, and could portray a lot of emotions.

But again, a new show i always a different ball game. And this show does require a strong actress to play a character that complex. Plus i would always want an actress who is at par with Ji Chang wook....Park Min Young level. Does Yoon ah have the experience? Well who knows she might take this one as a challenge and surprise us all.

On the plus side...
She was able to create believable chemistry with LBS in PMI.

Also, she likely be able to draw from her own personal life experiences to shape the role. She's had to deal with relentless paparazzi, ssaeng fans, the fear of making public mistakes , etc. She's likely experienced being used and/or exploited by people. She's likely had to travel to get away from prying eyes. And no doubt there's probably been a lot of times that she wish she didn't have to leave the house.

So maybe she'll surprise everyone with a strong performance.

It puzzled me how much real actresses often got ignored in favour of idols. I mean yeah sure there are good acting idols too, but let's say if I could choose between Jung So Min/Lee Yoo Bi/Han Groo/Kim So Eun or Yoona I would choose the actress any time.

The industry has so many talented up and coming young actresses but it seems their chance to get leading role are a lot limited than idols.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Frankly, a whole generation of drama actresses has been screwed over by idol casting - at the time when they should have been getting their step up to main lead roles, they were being ignored in favour of idols.

Basically, if you are an early-mid 90s-born actress and did not start off as a popular child actress, you were SOL on ever getting that step to lead. That leads to producers claiming there are no actresses in their twenties - which is a flat-out lie because (with certain conspicuous exceptions) they're there all right, they're just still stuck in second lead roles! And that's what lands us in situations like MotW/Bring It On Ghost casting where minors end up cast with leading men far too old for them.

I would be a-ok with idol casting if the idols being cast were good at acting - Jung Eunji, IU, even Minah recently all did well. But that's not the case. But when you have someone like Jo Boa being passed over....it's a bit ridiculous.

Totally agree. For every idol that is also good at acting, there are ten of them who get lead roles simply because they warble pleasantly, look good, and can shill face cream well. Not too surprisingly, their performances rarely go above the level of a CF. And thus many shows that could be great are eminently forgettable.

I enjoyed Yongpal too albiet disappointed by the turn it took. Its unfortunate that the writer couldn't juggle chaebol politics and brave humanitarian/selfish hero in a balanced way. But necessarily consider the writer a bad one.
The downhill movement started from the romance that made me do doubble takes and caused everyone to perform mental gymnastics in order to justify its sudden intensity.
Though to me, the greates mirfortune was that it deprived many from acknowledging Kim Tae Hee's strong performance(to me,her best ever) and just dismissed her as another dud. @Matt.

Yeah, I agree. It was the best performance of Kim Tae-hee's career so far - no doubt about it. And she had a very good chemistry with Joo Won, it was just that the romance developed so quickly everyone thought we blinked and missed it or sth.

At least the ratings kept up and a drama was deemed as a hit. What would have been if they followed the plot in a away similar to first 6 episodes...

Nonetheless, I still remember this drama fondly. I have an urge to rewatch it now before K2 starts.

It was my intro to Joo Won. You know, I was never really taken by KTH's beauty but in yongpal, she really embodied Sleeping Beauty for me. In those hospital scenes she was just...I don't know ethereal? I just wanted to keep staring at her (in a non-creepy way). But then she got up and transformed into our Crocodile Queen and I couldn't complain, nope! Not one damn bit about it!

KTH slay her character in Yong Pal. But... she was not totally bland from her beginning of career. It is just her acting felt so unnatural. Yoon-ah was actually pretty decent in Prime Minister and I, but that was essentially a romcom so I'm not sure how she'd fair with a complex character like in this one. Sad day... How come the production company takes her back after she turned it down? What a flake she is. I hope Ji Chang Wook turns it down now. Too bad Lee Jung Jin confirmed....

Actually the production tried to invite her the second time after she turned it down before. Guess they tried too hard and she felt bad to reject them again!

She turned it down because she couldn't do it, she was tied down. She was already signed onto a Chinese drama called Santu but now that drama has been delayed due to investor issues.

Now she can take on projects.

The drama staff & producers wanted her, tough luck for you. JCW has confirmed.

Give her a chance!
Among the idol actresses, she is a decent one.
It might be a chance for her to show her acting improvement
Her comedy acting is much stronger than her melodrama acting. Her crying scenes are still quite awkward.
Hang out often with lots of acting seniors in the industry might help her a lot for the past years
She must learn a lot from their advices
She ia hardworking and down to earth
I'll welcome her challenge for an different and meaty role like this.
Maybe her sad past trauma with the camera and spotlight also help with understanding her character too :(
Also no doubt that the visual of the couple will be stunning

Yoona isn't my favorite of idol actresses, but she's not that bad. I loved her in Prime Minister and I. Granted, that was a rom-com with not a lot of depth, but I'd gladly give her a chance to spread her wings and test the waters of more serious dramas. I may not like SNSD, but Yoona sure is likable, and watchable.

She really isn't all that bad. P&I's problems were the writer's fault, not hers. And, she seems to match her partners fairly well, so I think she'll elevate her acting to match JCW. I'm more worried about the writer and the concept. Maybe because it is too close to the concept of Healer but now written by someone less trustworthy to follow through throughout the entire drama.

She wouldn't be my first choice for any role that demands intensity but in all fairness, she did surprise me in Prime Minister & I so maybe I should give her the benefit of the doubt.

And hey, at least this time it's not a minor! Hooray for casting legally-appropriate actors in an adult romance!

I will drop it now. Writer's skill and acting skill's Ji Chang Wook can't save her.
Finally, tvN will become more like big 3, which have lot of idols in their dramas.

I don't know if you remember, but before tvn became such a huge trend they became popular while hiring the unknown and idol actors who surprised everyone with their depth. Reply 1997, which I think put them on the map, was headed by three idol singers. From the comments, it looks like they pursued her, not the other way around. No one is forcing you to watch it, but I just wanted to point out the irony of your last statement. Before they could afford or even attract all these big names and more "credible" stars, tvn hired many idol actors who in turn were able to prove themselves.

Not sure if Yoona will be one of those people, but I'm willing to give it a chance for JCW.

I was at first expected yong pal like healer with many cool underground medical scenes but no, the writer keep on about the heroine's political situation instead of focusing on its titular character. That's why it went from hero to zero. I like the first 4 eps but then the series went downhill. Too much hype.

I actually liked Yoona a lot in PMAI so i'm up for her to show us more mature role. People act as if Yoona is showed down our throats day by day like Suzy ,Hyeri and Seolhyun. But she acted in a drama almost 3 years ago i think it's time for her to make a comeback.

And her and Ji Chang Wook will make a beautiful couple.

I think Yoona didn't feel comfortable in her cdrama (it was a historical one), she acted much much better in PMAI. I think it was because it's Korean, and you can hear her voice (not dubbed like in china).

I think she'll do well in this role, I hope she succeeds.

I see Yoona fans are here already lol, anyway, I'm not excited for this casting news either but if Yoona was the best they could find and if the story is good i'm going to watch it regardless of the lead 'actress'. Dramas lately are boring me so i have a bit of hope for this one, 'cause at least Yong Pal was really good in the first few episodes.

She's decent and likeable. I noticed that I already watched two of her dramas which I ended up liking them so as long as there is a chemistry between her and LJK I don't have problems. It's not likely that I will find a great acting in every Kdrama I watch. I just need them to be entertaining and passable since I don't have high standard for Korean Drama...

I have a feeling that now tvn is getting more popular and having viewership rating hovering around 5% has become a norm , they are too going for these idol turned actors may be for their popularity factor. I am kinda saddened by this development because for me tvn is synonymous to quality be it story, music, cinematography or acting!

Doesn't TVN have a history of idol-actors? I remember more TVN main characters being idols then the big 3.

Yeah, they do. But the idols they cast in lead roles (barring Taecyeon, since there always has to be an exception) have all been really good or at least decent actors who did justice to their roles. Yoon Doojoon, Jung Eunji, Lee Joon, Sooyoung, even Hyeri.

I think part of it may have been that tvN actually made most of its idols go through auditions so at the very least they had to show evidence of acting ability somewhere as opposed to just being hired because they shill face cream, as skelly puts it.

Yoona isn't great at acting but frankly, neither is Ji Chang Wook. Of course, he's better than she is but this pairing is quite compatible not just in looks but also in terms of acting. Yoona is the type who will do well if she is cast in the right role and I can see her playing the character here. Just don't expect awesome range or anything spectacular. Ji Chang Wook won a lot of hearts in Healer but I'd rather he pick up a wholly different role for his next drama. This one does seem very similar to his role in Healer.

Yongpal would have been good if they just kept to the doctor and his moonlighting activities. The sleeping heiress' revenge would have worked too but as a separate story. Putting the two together just didn't work out.

Okay, sorry but I will disagree with you regarding JCW's acting? Have you seen all his works?this guy knows how to act really! And based on some people's reaction, im sure im not the only one who disagrees with your comment. I have not seen yoona's work so I am hopeful and giving her a chance. But dont jump into conclusions saying he is not great at acting.

You have your opinion and I have mine.

I am not jumping into conclusions and I don't think I need to watch every one of his dramas to form an opinion. I also know a lot of people especially here in DB will disagree with me but I think I can speak my mind.

He's a good actor but not among the best in his generation. That's my opinion and I am sure, many people have their own opinion on who's the best or a few who are at the top. So for you it may be JCW but it's just not for me.

Like I said, we both have our own opinions and I respect yours. I do agree that K2 is of the same genre as Healer, and I want him to take something different, but maybe jcw chose this drama bec the last 2 chinese dramas he did were all light and need not much of serious acting imo, that's why he chose this. Or maybe just maybe he's more comfortable playing serious roles. As long as he can deliver, im fine with anything.( im sure he can)

0

I don't think he would have any problems playing this role. I was actually excited about him doing a tvN drama, just not the role. I've become a lot more optimistic when it comes to cable dramas, LOL. Hopefully, tvN saw something good or different in the writing.

I agree ! His bodyguard character is too similar to his Healer & Those Days musical parts ... I'd rather see him in the other scripts floating around - eg the brilliant lawyer who loses his memory and finds himself on death row

I don't watch Healer and not a real fan of JCW but.. JCW in Empress Ki was great. I dont need any other drama to prove that JCW is good. He acts well.
If someone proved he can act well in sageuk, probably he can do well also in another roles.

I liked Yoona enough in PM & I, found her really charming in rom-com, but this role seems more complexed and requires a certain nuance, not sure if she can handle it. On a more shallow note, her with JCW will make a good looking pair x)
The only thing that really irk me is Yongpal writer, like i don't even want to think about that mess of drama, how it spectacularly goes off trail after the 6 first amazing eps. Idk, it boggled my mind when the writer even won some kind of award.. one can only hope he/she won't make the same mistake...

Not a fan of her, nor the writer. But will give it a try, for JCW and LJJ sake. This gonna be JCW last drama before MS. So, watching the first couple eps won't be that hard. If turn out to be good then continue, otherwise just drop it.

I think it's fine to see Yoona in this role. She has been improving so I don't understand the hate. She is comparable to most idol actresses like Suzy, Hyeri, IU, UEE, etc.

If Yoona played loveable characters like the others I am sure she will not be this much hate as the others.

Why does dramaworld insist on pairing up my favorite actors with lackluster leading ladies this year? Is there something in the water in Korea?

I'm sure there are really talented actresses in Korea just waiting for a chance.

I'm not saying people like Yoon-ah, Suzy and Hyeri should give up acting, but just maybe not be considered for leading lady roles EVERY single time- until they've improved. Although, Yoon-ah is the best among those three, this role sounds like it will be far and away the most difficult.

She was cast as the lead in her last several kdramas (regardless of when they took place). She's currently staring as a lead in China right now (which I haven't seen, but probably is dubbed, I don't know).

I wasn't speaking about her only. Both Suzy and Hyeri have had several leading lady roles, when there are much more capable actresses out there to take on the LEAD roles. Why not let them be second leads for awhile and see how they grow from there?

She's not any better than the Suzy's and Hyeri's of the world despite people saying she's "improved". She's serviceable at best, but the main issue I have with her is I don't think I've ever seen her as anything but Yoona when she's acting. She always takes me out of a drama because of that.

True. The JSY comments were MUCH worst. But reading the comments on both posts was the wrong beginning of a work day. I didn't understand the JSY comments just because there were so many other people mentioned in that article. However, I've come to expect that with her. I can shrug it off.

But then Yoona too? It was unfortunately timed that two of the DB least favorite actresses had articles one after the next.

I don't have anything to say about Suzy because that's one too many for one sitting ?

I don't have a problem with this casting. I saw Yoon Ah in Prime Minister and I. I thought she did a good job there and had plenty of chemistry with Lee Bum Soo. It was the writing that went wrong in that show. I'll give her a chance and see how she does in what's probably a more serious role. It's the writer I'm more worried about. If nothing else I hope they make the romance more believable. It came out of left field in Yong Pal.

I like Yoona, she's my favorite member of Girl's Generation, and has a real sweet personality. She may not be the best idol actress, or my favorite (that distinction goes to Jung Eun-ji) but she deserves a chance. And if the production team and PD are wanting her, then they must think she's what is best for the role. If this is a drama/thriller/action-adventure, then she may surprise us. I hope she agrees and does well! Unni, fighting!
