Romance by sunlight in Moonlight Drawn By Clouds

It’s no music video, but the first poster for youth sageuk Moonlight Drawn By Clouds is a pretty one, highlighting a sweet summer romance between a prince and his eunuch. Of course, that eunuch is a girl crossdressing as a boy, but honestly she’s fooling no one. For the drama’s sake though, I really hope the prince is a little dense about that, because it’s way more fun if he’s properly fooled for a good long while.
The upcoming KBS Monday-Tuesday series stars Park Bo-gum as Joseon’s Crown Prince Hyomyeong, a prickly but brilliant young prince. While dressed as an ordinary scholar outside the palace, he encounters Kim Yoo-jung, a young lady who dresses as a man in order to make a living (giving out love advice, of all things). She ends up gaining a position as a eunuch inside the palace, where she’ll befriend the prince and capture his heart.
Recent stills have Park Bo-gum and Kim Yoo-jung flying through the air, presumably for the drama’s poster shoot… or maybe a second music video teaser? We can only hope. In any case, they look like they’re shooting the poster for Sassy Go Go in Joseon. At this point, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the next teaser for this show had Park Bo-gum leading the cast in a cheer routine. Gooooooooo, Moonlight!
Moonlight Drawn By Clouds follows Beautiful Mind and premieres August 15.

That's assuming that Scarlet Heart's would be stratospheric (which is highly-likely, yes). I say, better to be "beaten" by such a powerhouse than losing in a ratings war without any tough competition. Plus, as you said, they're young and I may add, extremely talented and well-loved in Korea. So, really, I don't see any huge loses for the leads if this didn't get 2-digit ratings or what-not. The web novel is also really popular so I don't see this flopping hard regardless of competition.

You just can't predict until it's out there. Who knows, this show can carve out it's own space too amidst the giant that Scarlet Heart is. We all love underdog success stories hehe
As far as i am concerned i am totally and equally excited for both Scarlet Heart and MDBC.

The 5 minutes trailer for the Chinese distributors was sort of great, check that out. I think Moonlight might be headed for a rough road ratings wise.

Time traveling may not be their cup of tea but battle of the princes for love and throne is basically everyone's cup of coffee. I foresee that it would be difficult to win against Scarlet Heart. Kind of remind me of how the warm-hearted drama You Are Beautiful being TKO by the blockbuster production that was IRIS in 2009 and coincidentally, Scarlet is directed by the same PD who helmed Iris. Just hope Moonlight will do well and acquire its own cult of followers just like YAB.

I really hate it that they are on the same time slot because I'd like both to do well.
Moonlight has a 2 week head start so I think it'll be fine. If it'll manage to stay at double digits than that would be good. I don't think anyone is expecting it to be a big hit.
The pressure is on "Scarlet Heart" with all the local and international hype. Not only that but they have overseas investors like Universal Studios investing 10 million on the show. That's more than most Korean film budgets.
Looks like PD Kim's style. I didn't care for IRIS but "That Winter...." was gorgeous.

Well, I don't think it can beat SH rating wise but I also don't think it will fall flat in comparison I still have faith on double digits or be like buzz worthy at least ^^

Agree. The pressure is on Scarlet Heart as all eyes are looking at them now, maybe not so much in Korea as there is not much promotion domestically yet which is weird but the drama has gained so much momentum internationally after the released of the 6-mins trailer in China.
From the trailer, I can say that the drama looks promising. I adore both Park Bo Gum and Kim Yoo Jung especially (with her being my first pick for SH instead of IU) but Lee Jun Ki is my eternal bias. I still hope both dramas will do well though my inclination is towards SH.
I agree with @Suk Bin, seems like this will be the repeating case of YAB vs Iris but YAB still managed to become a cult classic and I hope the same with Moonlight.

Yes, they have 2 week head start but unfortunately Moonlight againts the last 4 eps of Doctors. I doubt this get past double digits!

Original Scarlet Heart was a pan-Asia hit which is why people are looking forward to it. Very few Chinese dramas have such a critical acclaim and is loved by masses as well. This is both a blessing and boon for Scarlet Heart Ryeo, the massive pressure may result in disaster but I am hopeful after watching the 5 minutes trailer, I just hope IU can deliver. I still think Liu Shi Shi was perfection as Rouxi but will she be able to deliver the same, only time will tell.

From the trailer, K-version of Scarlet Heart seems to go on a different route than the C-version though of course maintaining the core elements of the novel by Tong Hua.
I think that is a smart move since I don't think anyone would want to watch recycle scenes by different set of actors and would love a totally refreshing takes. The trailer was amazing and has successfully cooked up so much interest especially among the international drama fans.
Having said that, I kind of feel like Moonlight is giving an easy breezy vibe, like the production knows that they are up against tough competetion that is SH and therefore just go with the flow, do a fun drama regardless that they are to succeed or failed in the ratings department.
I personally think Scarlet has a high chance to succeed, in fact they cant afford to fail what with the massive production budget and hype, buzz and attention surrounding the drama. And honestly, I am hoping it will do beyond well because of Lee Jun Ki most of all. It is time a true charismatic actor to finally shine or in his case, shining again.

Yes it was popular even after "Palace" which was kind of identical but I'd save the critical acclaim for the likes of "Romance of the 3 Kingdoms". Now that's what you call an epic adaptation.

The TV series (1994) was a mainland production based on a classics historical novel by Luo Guanzhong.
The books have English translations by Moss Roberts (UC Cal Press).
There is also a video game based on The 3 Kingdoms era.
Love them all especially the books.
Maybe try both and see what you like best?

No worries, if there is a reply jinx even in this ones, it's just a bad choice of lousy writer. Coz i watched both Entertainer and Lucky Romance, and the writing can really need much polishing up in plot.

Lmao, if I didn't know I'd think these two were just playing dress up and not doing promo for a sageuk. Are we still sure this contains no time traveling? ;-)
I hope for once the lighthearted promo reflects the tone of the drama and Moonlight doesn't turn out to be a serious and dark melo instead (or something like that). Can you tell I've been trolled too many times by production teams with their promo material? :-P
But we've seen a teary eyed PBG already at the end of the dancing teaser so I'm already mentally preparing myself and have the kleenex box ready.

The problem with this "cute" promotional style is that people go in expecting this cuteness to continue. And that hardly ever happens in (non time traveling) sageuk. So what you expect and what you get are totally different.
Can anyone even remember a light, rom-comish saguek? I can think only of Sungkyunkwan Scandal
I loved, loved, loved the boombastic music video. Except i later realised that anything remotely like it will NOT happen in the show. And that made me sad. And then later dimmed my excitement for the show

Kim Yoo-jung is going to be 17yrs old next month and if we count her web series this drama would be her 50th project (dramas and movies combined) which is pretty amazing!

One of the things that really impresses me about Korea is how most of their child stars seem to grow up with a good head on their shoulders. In America, our child stars are usually pretty damaged psychologically and start acting out, doing drugs, etc. I guess there's a better environment and support network in Korea.

Yes good on Korea. It sounds like that they live a normal kid life even though some of them grew up on screen.
She goes to work and then back to school. She hangs out with regular school girls that she had known since middle school etc. It's good that she is not being harassed by paparazzis at school.
She's got a good head on her shoulders and she is pleasant and smart during interviews.

I would so watch the hell out of "Sassy Go Go in Joseon". Crinkley smile Won Geun as another prince paired with sassy rebel Eun Ji who has to teach them fighting moves, and of course puppy eyed Ji Soo pining for one (or two) princesses!!!! (OK I know he is batting for the opposition in Scarlet Heart). Then with cutie Bo Gum and gorgeous Yu Jung .... OMG my perfect sageuk!!

I am really ...really worried about how this show will lay out. Is it rom-com? If so,which age of Prince life are they showing? Historically, Prince Homyeong (PBK's character) died at the age of 21. Really young and sad. The real prince was a very smart prince,who even became regent,but died so suddenly . Are they going to change the history? I hope so. Because the history itself is already pitiful. Imagine the drama.

He may think that she is a pretty boy at first but deep down inside he must have known that she is a girl.
This is a fictional fantasy youth romance dress up sageuk based on a web-toon.
Joseon had a strict patriarchal social system. The heroine is a commoner who has very little to no chance of ever meeting any members of the royal family. He is the prince who is forbidden from going outside the palace.
Cross- dressing is a narrative device used in situations that doesn't normally happened in that era. How else could they meet in order for them to have any kind of romance?
The only way for her to step inside the palace ground and work closely with the prince is to pretend that she is a young eunuch.

I thk both shows might have their own niche audience. Although both sageuk, Scarlet seems to be the more intense type while moonlight seems lighter and more cutesy. But within Korea probably the intense type is popular with ahjummas. Hope both does well. Il be watching both thanks to internet and fast subs

Well, both dramas are fighting their own battles. MDBC with young and sort of rookie actors (lead-wise) but a popular story with a good fanbase, and Scarlet Heart with great number of brilliant actors but a popular story internationally giving a lot of pressure to the team. I just wish both dramas will achieve 2 digit ratings. It'll be sad if its only 1 digit.
Rooting for both! Ive been a fan of Kim Yoo Jung and i really like Park Bogum since R88. Theyre both brilliant young actors so, acting wise i think this drama will already be perfect. Directing and story flow takes up a huge part of success so, hoping its great too.
Meanwhile, i loove the original Scarlet Heart (4th princeee) so, i wish them luck. I think great part of the success of the cdrama is the chemistry between the leads. Itll suck if all those talents and handsome faces will just go to waste. I dont know how they will fit all those episodes, and princes screentime into the korean 18-24 eps but hope this one delivers.
