New JTBC rom-com lines up Kim Hyun-joo, Joo Sang-wook to star

Cable network JTBC has announced a new drama, slated for Fridays and Saturdays this fall. It’s called Fantastic, and has cast a whole group of actors in one fell swoop: Kim Hyun-joo (I Have a Lover) and Joo Sang-wook (Dazzling Temptation) are in talks to headline, and Park Shi-yeon (Greatest Marriage), Kim Tae-hoon (One More Happy Ending), and resident puppy Ji-soo (Doctors) have signed on as supporting cast.

The new romantic comedy comes from PD Jo Nam-gook of the thrillers Last, Empire of Gold, and The Chaser, which should be an interesting departure. Writer Lee Sung-eun of Hyena, Sad Love Song, and the wacky sitcom Vampire Idol will be penning the script. It’s a bizarre mix, to say the least, but I do love Vampire Idol in all its ridiculousness, so I’m definitely interested in this writer’s next project.

There’s not a whole lot of plot information out about the romantic comedy, but it’ll be a love story between a drama writer with a terminal illness, and a Hallyu star. That doesn’t sound particularly funny, but it’s described as a cheerful-but-weighty romance. I don’t even know who’s playing what, but I’d put my money on Kim Hyun-joo playing the writer and Joo Sang-wook playing the Hallyu star.

Park Shi-yeon, Kim Tae-hoon, Ji-soo

On paper the premise sounds a lot like Uncontrollably Fond, and it seems like there are a lot of showbiz dramas going on right now (though I suppose the medical dramas are winning that race, really). But I expect the tone and execution to be very different, and I’m keen on learning a little more about each of the characters. Surely the writer of Vampire Idol can come up with some good quirks for everyone.

Kim Hyun-joo and Joo Sang-wook seem like a solid leading pair, and I’m always happy when he does comedy. Park Shi-yeon made her comeback to television in Greatest Marriage, which didn’t do so well, but second-lead territory is well-tread ground for her. Kim Tae-hoon seems to be in everything these days, and Ji-soo seems to be following in his footsteps. My only gripe with this is that I keep having to watch every drama he’s in, and right now it seems like he is in ALL OF THE DRAMAS.

Fantastic will air on Fridays and Saturdays following Age of Youth (which comes after Mirror of the Witch), and premieres sometime in September.

I agree! I love PSH's chemistry with ALL the guys in Doctors. But, surprisingly, I was moved the most with her's and Jisoo's chemistry/relationship. I absolutely loved how their relationship turned out and love their interactions together! It's so sweet! >_<

Agreeeeeeeeeeeeeee...
I love the chemistry between both of them.
Why is Ji Soo always playing an angst-ridden role?
But then again, that's exactly the reason he's our puppy.

+1 Joo Sang Wook seems to outshine his leading ladies (in my opinion) and this time it won't be. Please show me the chemistry like in 'I have lover' please.

ohhh. I was so waiting for Kim Hyun-Joo to come back, but not with Joo Sang-wook. He is such a lousy actor who never manages to get any chemistry with his leading actress.

Aside from him, the cast is fabulous.

He had great chemistry with HYS in Birth of Beauty and even LMJ in Cunning Single Lady. She just totally had zero chemistry with Choi Kang Hee in Dazzling Temptation. JSW is hot oppa but not one of the best actor. Depending on his partner, he can do well.

I've loved Kim Hyun Joo since Glass Slipper days and Lee Sang Wook is such a dork, it's crazy not to love him! Then we have Kim Tae Hoon, the sexy ahjussi and my puppy Jisoo. I can't possibly ask for more. This cast is amaze balls! :)

But, I have a question beanies...when the actors/actresses are "in talks to headline" does that mean that they have signed on already? Or are they just potential candidates?

Poor you :(

The ways to solve your dilemma are either just watch the drama with fast-forwarding Jisoo's scene or go for another drama with no Jisoo.

I'm excited about this OTP. I hope her character is spunky and smart, and I hope his has a dorky side. I still crack up when I think of his confession in Sly and Single Again ("I have... plastic flower"). The rest of the cast is great, too. My only reservation is the terminal illness part... maybe it's another misunderstanding and it's a computer terminal that's ill?

Does anyone know how many episodes are planned?

Here's hoping that Fantastic does a better job of living up to its name then Daebak did.

Here's another cheer for Park Shi-yeon! Ever since Coffee House, I have loved her acting - I hope that she won't be a bitchy ex or rival in this, but get an actual meaty role to sink her teeth into. Ahem, metaphorically speaking, of course. (Unless she's a gumiho. I would totally get behind that.)

I've never actually thought about it before, but you're right, Park Shi-yeon and Honey Lee do have a lot in common (and not just because they both have adorable dimples). They're not afraid to look silly or try new things, and they're grown into excellent actresses I'd love to see in a lot of kdramas to come. :-)

I loved her in Coffee House, too! That a nice, underrated drama. It's not everyday the male lead ends up with the best friend instead of the naive, bumbling new girl.

This. She can play morally complex characters pretty well, but if they turn her into the usual jealous harpy whose entire life revolves around the main couple, they're going to have one pissed off viewer on their hands.

Right? She's consistently played some complex, strong characters in her last few projects so I'm partly confident she won't be playing a run-of-the-mill, clingy second lead. But let's cross our fingers and prepare an offering for the drama gods, just in case.

too soon for a lead ? .. but at least do a proper second lead role pls so I can look at him with my hearts content.

I hope all confirm. Kim Hyun Joo will do fantastic work. Jo Sang Wook will do well in rom com. His character in Birth of Beauty and Cunning Single Lady were among his best roles. Depending on his partner, he will have a great chemistry.

Park Shi-Yeon and Kim Tae Hoon are both fantastic as well.
And Ji Soo... the Beanies puppy.

Its OK to be a supporting cast first Ji Soo ya, take time to learn your skill. Acting with seniors will definitely help you and give your precious experiences. ;) Hopefully he will get a role like Lee Won Geun in The Good Wife soon.

Park Shi Yeon is such a beautiful sweet lady. Her sexy figure is to die for no matter she already had kids. She's also a decent actress. She and Lee Honey seems the hottest korean actress. Too bad her dramas rarely do well.

I think she needs to be paired with someone who can bring female leads shine such as Gong Yoo or Eric Mun.

I hated her guts (& mono facial expression) in My girl, warmed up to her in Story of A Man, but she totally stole my heart in Coffe House, she was absolutely fantastic & had an electric chemistry with Kang Ji Hwan, I thought since then she'd a be huge but unfortunately she didn't reach her full potential,
But for me, she proved herself as an actress

After OMHE, I'm so in love with KTH and I'm glad he has a lot of projects coming up. Even though Greatest Marriage wasn't great (pun intended) I look forward to PSY. JSW is a minor pull for me.

But then of course, there's Jisoo. And excluding any drama genres I don't watch, like intense supernatural, I have to watch everything he is in, even if I'm late.

Yay, to uri resident puppy being on screen all year long!

Love, love Kim Tae Hoon. A lot. Look forward to him. I've warmed up to Park Shi Yeon and would like to see her again as well.

Kim Hyun Joo is cool, though I didn't so much like her last drama...she was great. And Joo Sang Wook can be so fun!

The rest of the cast are just lucky to be acting with her , dang im jealous!! . She is also very beautiful and humble! She did a brilliant job in I have a lover with ji Jin hee and was also great in what's going to happen to my family. I wish her all the best and i hope to see her in this drama . And if truly hope if this drama does work out for her to be one successful drama and win multiple awards. Fighting khj!!!
