Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 11-17, 2016

Man, tvN is just knocking it out of the ballpark lately—the premiere of Bring It On, Ghost this week set a record high for a Monday-Tuesday show for the cable network, who must be very pleased with their choices lately. I admit to being a bit curious as to how this tvN ghost show starring Taecyeon would fare compared to this tvN ghost show starring Taecyeon, but have been pleasantly entertained so far. (Plus, I’ve always had a soft spot for Taecyeon. He’s trying, okay?)

While there were no other big shakeups at the beginning of the week, Lucky Romance came to an end, pulling in about the same numbers it has for its entire run. Uncontrollably Fond didn’t see much of a rise this week, but still holds first place over Wanted, which is at least doing better at 7.7% as the thrill factor goes higher.

Mirror of the Witch also finished its run with numbers that now seem low for cable, but it otherwise put in a solid showing with plenty of critical acclaim to go with it. The other cable shows are holding steady, but it remains to be seen what will happen with next week’s premieres. Otherwise, no big surprises on the weekend drama circuit, except for the loss of the fun-filled Beautiful Gong Shim.

Lucky Romance: could have been a lot better if not for boring last two episodes. Even a fan like me hasn't bothered to tune in for the finale.
Uncontrollably Fond: it is winning my heart more and more. It keeps getting better and I like that secrets are being revealed in a timely manner rather than just keeping the tension throughout the end and only revealing all in the end in a makjang manner. I do hope the ratings will go up next week.

I am really waiting for W and can't wait to see how it will fare ratings wise. I personally think it will be a dark horse and win the ratings. But its all for stake. I am just happy I now have more dramas to watch.

Lucky Romance was a total failure.

No I don't think it was a total failure. RJY delivered and his interpretation of Je Su Ho is worth remembering even if the plot and the execution of the drama left much to be desired.

I agree that it wasn't a total failure, but that is due to the sheer effort of the actors. The story was crap, and did not warrant a 16 episode drama. There just wasn't any more story, after their accidental one night.

The second leads served no purpose, as did most of the side characters. At least with 'She Was Pretty', there was enough development to be interested in the life of the quirky people who worked at Mode.

Another drama that petered out at the end.

I wouldn't say a failure actually. I went in with low expectations and they did surpass them but then the interminable, cutesy, aigyo behavior made me want to reach for the insulin bottle to combat all the over sugared goo.

W is a big deal - so i don't think it will be a dark horse, because it feels like a favourite as far as ratings are concerned. It is Lee Jong Suk after all with Han Hyo Joo returning after 6 years. It's huge. And the fact the story is fascinating adds to it. I would be taken aback if it doesn't turn out to be a ratings hit.

I'd say compared to the months of hype UF got (footage dropping since all the way back in December, star writer + popular cast, predicted to follow in the footsteps of DotS and clock ratings in the high teens at least a la Nice Guy), W is something of the dark horse.

But it's also KBS' main competition thanks to the leads attached, so UF continuing to dominate the ratings will be dependent on how W starts - if the first two episodes are messy and viewers fail to bite, KBS can breathe easy about keeping the ratings top spot even if the actual numbers don't meet their expectations. Of course, UF could also have a fantastic third week of episodes and see a new influx of viewers as a result, things are nicely up in the air right now.

UF is dropping but it has melodrama legs to keep it above or close to 10%. This cast is not as good as Nice Guy.

W is kind of hard to predict when it comes to the older viewers. It's unique enough for them to check it out but I'm not sure about it's staying power.

This is totally my type of drama although I'm not a huge comic geek.

yeah, W is at something of a disadvantage with the genre, which is why they need to establish their story fast and hook people in, the writer really cannot fall down on the job there.

And I hope Lee Jong-seok hasn't suffered the same lapse in his acting that Kim Woo-bin did early in UF (I know he's no Song Joong-ki but I was surprised by how underwhelmed I was, I've seen better from him).

0

Yes I'm not impressed with Woo-bin's acting. I wish he'd taken "With God" instead. Oh well, it's got a more than solid cast now and I'm looking forward to it.

0

I would actually say W's biggest disadvantage is its unique/ambitious storyline. In order to have high ratings in the Big 3 stations, you have to hook the much older demographic as well and people think they might not bite.

W's production team have said that they're worried the first 4 episodes might confuse the masses and therefore their main focus was to try to find a simple way to tell the story so people understand. I was kinda disappointed when I heard that but at the same time I get it.

Totally agree, cast of W is great, screenwriter is also good, but the problem still might be writing.
I watched Nine and I know that writer is smart but the problem is sometimes she/he is too smart and it might confuse tons of viewers. I hope she chooses Queen in-Hyo's trajectory rather than nine, which at some point was too hard to watch.
Problem might also be Lee Jong Suk's dumb airport scandal and Han Hyo Joo's brother problems, but oh well, there is Lee Byun Hun(king of scandals) who is still popular so it might not be case

People somehow forget that Jongsuk managed to have two successful dramas during kdrama's big rating slump of 2014 which was after the airport thing lol. Knetizens =/= general public.

0

Lee Jong-seok's had two successful dramas after the so-called "airport scandal" (even if I refuse to acknowledge the existence of one of them) and Han Hyo-joo's had a hit movie, so if W fails, it's going to fail on its own merits.

0

Lee jong suk just get hate on Nate but he is always popular when it comes to Naver, ranking or favorite lists, rating, salary, awards and so on, it's nothing strange that a lot of celebrity get Hate on Nate.

0

LJS's dramas always were the top in their time slots, he even could save DS rating & financial wise with his popularity & acting while some other popular actors couldn't do....

Actually I always see he gets good reviews except on some Nate(=hate) articles , I was curious so I checked most of Naver articles with KWB vs LJS, I should say about 80% of the comments were about LJS & anticipating his drama, the other 20% were about KWB or anticipating both of them.
I really don't want to compare them because both of them are popular & best friend but just wanted to share my experience about reading the comment section about him & warn you about his reputation even after that accident.

0

I had to google the "airport scandal" because I didn't know what you were referring to. LOL! I couldn't believe that caused controversy. Now, if he had hit her or called her names, but to jerk his arm away from a fan?

I've watched Running Man - the only time I see actors outside their dramas - and I was struck by how very, very careful the actors are to not say anything that might be misconstrued. I don't think I'd like to be a Korean drama star.

0

Imo W should've tried to secure a broadcast on tvN and it probably would've been a ratings hit automatically. I just hope the writer will stick to the intended storyline if this really suffers ratings wise (like the writer frim IRY).

That's what I was thinking too. A week day at a 10 or 11pm slot would've been perfect.

0

which is why i think gong yoo made a smart move in terms of his upcoming drama. now, i don't exactly remember if he was casted after or before the drama announced it was gonna be aired on tvn so it could have been a smart move or a lucky move but after his last drama failure this was a good choice.
like, he has two advantages now one being the writer and the brodcasting channel which more or less cements the fact that its going to be a ratings hit.

W has all the components necessary to be a ratings hit but the fact that its going up against uncontrollably fond and also has an ambitious storyline is quite worrying. like @angieya said, if they had secured tvn, it would have been a much more solid win in terms of ratings.

0

I'm give up Lucky Romance by 4th episode, soooo boriiing. Wanted's first two episodes are boring too, but it's get better and better now. Uncontrollably Fond is just so-so.

Surely star power of W is as much as UF if it isn't more, but as others the hype isn't comparable (I think MBC has relied on the leads's star power than media coverage) plus this genre hasn't been experienced a lot in big 3 stations so it's really hard to predict what will happen. Fingers crossed till next rating post here on DB.

"MBC has been promoting it so heavily"???
I guess it is because you don't read Naver or Nate to see what others are saying!!! They never had one single article about one of their TEASERS on the special bar for hot news on Naver let alone the smaller news about this drama, while some other dramas featured the selfie of their cast on Naver & you could see the packaged articles which were released everyday.
Right at this moment please search the word "media play" ( 언플) on the Naver real time search so you can see all the comments which are nagging about Someone's media play from Monday.

LJS had 4 photoshoot during this time but even his agency didn't publicized none of them other than the one for Ceci to promote this drama...

Plus I think there is no need for others to downplay it when expectations are in a reasonable amount.

Required fields are marked *

I don't think MBC did badly at promoting, they did what new shows usually do which is air teasers on their channel and post stills/bts on the internet. It's just that KBS just went above and beyond for Uncontrollably Fond, they rented ad space on billboards, buildings, buses, etc... I'm not even sure if DotS got that treatment (then again I wasn't paying attention to DotS so I might be wrong). I think that's why it feels like W's promo pales in comparison, but actually it's the normal amount.

0

@soapbox
I didn't mean that MBC was bad at promoting it, actually I am definitely more pleased with this way (simple, reasonable , creative & intriguing) in comparison with heavy promoting as @paroles accused it, but as you said it pales in comparison to UF which is their direct competitor or even in comparison to previous MBC drama (lucky romance) as I saw during the past 3 months.

0

I was in Korea and it was everywhere on the MBC channel. Every single show I watched had its logo at the top. If this isn't heavy promotion I don't know what heavy promotion is. I hardly think MBC can do any better.

0

@paroles
I see what are you saying and thank you for information, I had heard they're doing it since Wednesday, it is such a relief since it is the last week, all I said were about comparison to some other promotions you know, just this!

Ryu Jun Yeol is great but I think if it wasn't for her this drama would have even worse ratings. Bo Nui was such a bad character, at first she had her own beauty, but at some point she started crying and crying, being depressive character in rom-com and then became dull, empty, stupid. HJE at least made her beareble. It felt like writer sacrificed her character to make RJY shine-if his feelings weren't urequired for THAT long he wouldn't have so much cute/funny moments

I am glad - just a little bit that the last episode of the Mirror of the witch fetched them 2.8. Usually on Saturdays crowded with shows it fared below 2...around 1.9 ish right? The show deserved much more, atleast a 3% ratings. But i am happy the show found its place in it own way.

It's sad that Lucky Romance ended with a whimper, it could have done much better.

Yesterday I watched One warm Word, it's from the same writer as Doctors and Can we get married?. I felt so bad 'cause it is a LOT better than Doctors and High society. All characters were logical, there were couples not one girl who EVERYONE likes, show didn't told us that possesive lead is good...now it feels like that after writer stopped trying and just started shooting more cheesy/dumber dramas her ratings started to get better(OWW ratings was 9.2, at that time it was low rating).
People always say that now writing is more important but ratings show that dramas still depend on cast. Doctors+Uncontrolablly fond are great examples of that

You might not like Doctors but it's a good show...
Many people enjoy it with the result of ratings.
UF has been hype as one of the biggest projects this year for KBS so of course it'd have high rating but you could see people didn't like it as much because rating didn't go up.
OWW is too melo and wouldn't get the same ratings Doctors has right now.

Actually I don't think Doctors is a bad show...I mean I have seen tons of dramas which had even worse writing and a LOT more plot holes. This drama would be perfect in 2009(aka the age of boys over flower), where the whole moral of the story is that kickass heroines are cool and guys like strong girls.
The problem is that it is bad in comparison with Beautiful Mind and the previous dramas of same writer(without High Society).
UF has two digit ratings which is already good
P.S I love all actors of Doctors but I seriously think Kim Rae Won's talent is wasted here/his character is too...I don't know how to say it...empty?

Doctors was written and won the script award in 2010, which explains it.
And I beg to the different on KRW's acting as I think he is doing better here than Punch.
It's not only seriously roles that would be call good acting. He and PSH are selling hard on their characters - which is the main reasons why it's doing so well.

doctors is more of a romance disguised as a medical drama and i guess kim rae won gets to breathe a little in this role since he isn't doing a character as intense as the one in punch. i guess rather than bad acting ( bc kim rae won is a great actor i don't think he can actually give a bad performance being such a flexible actor lol) its more like his character doesn't have much.....character? its quite 2d, there isn't many dimensions to his character that is being shown to us. tbh his character is rather boring compared to other characters on the show.

doctors is very cliched and a lot of the usual drama tropes are used in this which blend in well with the romance which is basically the main reason why its doing so well ratings wise (with the addition of such a hyped up cast). its not bad writing, but its not a very meaty story or anything. the plot relies on its romance and its cliches to tell a story, there isn't anything that intrigues you unlike beautiful mind. its safe, predictable, you more or less know whats going to happen and how its going to end. not to say im not enjoying the breezy feel of it( despite finding the lead pairing very creepy) but like @Nerdy said, comparatively, beautiful mind is just a much better drama quality wise.

0

I don't think Doctors is bad comparing to High Society at all. High Society is a disastrous drama that I want to erase from my memory. Doctors is just a fluffy, straightforward romantic drama that doesn't pretend to be more than what it is.

Oh I think you misanderstood me or I wrote it wrongly, High Society didn't even know what it was about (Love between clases? Story of revenge? story of ...?). At least in Doctors we all know it is about long lived love or how much better Park Shin Hye is when she plays strong heroines

0

I don't think Doctors is a BAD show, but it for sure is not really good either. Pretty much formula-cliche rehash melo.

I think that both Wanted and BM are much better, but I guess Korean viewers don't agree with me.

But UF is dropping in ratings in it's third episode already, which pretty much proves writing and acting IS important and no matter how much you hype up the drama with heavy promotion and big stars, it can onlu work for one episode or so. After that the audience will watch the story they like.

A big segment of the Korean viewing audience loves their SOAP-ish dramas w/ all the usual cliches/tropes and stock, one dimensional characters (as does a big segment of the Japanese and Chinese viewing audiences) revolving around a cheesy romance (or a few cheesy romances).

Shows that actually have good writing and acting (AM/Reply Series, Signal, Misaeng, Dear My Friends, Liar Game, PU/Task Force 38, etc.) - the type of shows that would compare to the best of American shows (also on cable) don't get nearly the ratings due to not following the typical K-drama formula, along with being on cable.

Such a shame that Joseon X-Files never got wider acclaim, much less wider viewership (back before cable dramas were hitting the 5% mark, much less the 10% mark) or for that matter, well-written romcoms like "He/The Man Who Can't Marry", "Miss Korea", etc. that were on the public networks (even if on an ancillary channel).

One of the few romance-centered (but not cheesy) dramas that was well-written and a big hit was "Coffee Prince." But those are too few and far in-between.

Joseon X-files was showing at midnight. Sci-fi is not the late owls cup of coffee.
The only successful midnight show that I can recall was OCN's sageuk Yaksha. It was definitely for the adults with sex and violence.

0

Love it btw. One of my top 10 K-dramas. Still hoping for a Season 2 even though the chance is very low.

0

Joseon X-files not Yaksha.

0

+1000000

Thanks for mentioning He Who Can't Marry. It's my absolute favorite rom-com - perfect balance of romance abd comedy, no unnecessary angst. I can't wrap my head around why it never garnered much hype.

0

The middle eps of Joseon X-Files were masterpieces - great stories that at the same time, messed up your mind (with amazing cinematography to go along with it).

0

He Who Can't Marry had a great cast as well.

Still, my fave Ji Jin-hee role.

Thinking it was too "eclectic" for the typical Korean viewer - and the romance didn't have the usual cheesy elements.

0

Heirs was just freaking awful - it still stands out as one of the worst K-dramas ever for me. But when Heirs was playing, a totally underhyped show - "Secret" - in the same time slot opposite Heirs went from around a 4.0 rating to over 20. It was the only show to beat Heirs, and it did it with good writing and acting, not hype.

I think it was finding out the main lead is dying right in the first episode that put the kibosh on its ratings. I almost threw in the towel then too - very sick of terminal illnesses and when the main lead is going to die, there's no hope of a happy ending. I'm sure I've missed a lot of shows that were very good. I know I should watch the one where the main lead gets Alzheimer's, for instance, but I just don't want to spend 16 hours watching him succumb to disease however good the drama is.

my response to the lead dying is "oh s___, well, ill never watch this one again" but this happens early enough in u fond that it saved me a lot of time. The only drama that got it right was marriage contract because 1. she eventually got her wish (her original plan succeeded) AND 2. she and all her people got so much MORE of what we could wish for in this situation--love.and 3. the ending stressed the importance of making every moment count rather than dreading a future often hidden but always inevitable.

I'm sad too that Beautiful Mind has low ratings. It's an excellent drama compared to others like doctors which is too sappy( seriously someone should report the doctors to the board for too much flirtings at work) or UF which is wayy to tangled for me( only in Kdrama where 4 main characters are somehow intertwined tragically with each other). Let's fight ghost is fun and unique and hopefully she stayed dead and they have a great ghostbuster relationship or I'm out.

I'm sorry to inform you and JB that Doctors in a romance drama if the posters weren't obvious already...

0

Nowadays the audience is not very patient. The writer showed us an intricated story and an unlikable heroine ( he has changed her since) and that turned most of the audience off.
And it's too late to get them back.
I love the show and I don't care about ratings myself but I care about them for the whole crew who's putting in hard work and like someone else said, Jang Hyuk is owning this role.
Reminds me of his acting in "Thank You". The guy is simply brilliant!

0

I think the last straw for Doctors for me was when seeing how much you could drink became the main claim to glory for some of the doctors at the party. Personally, I would prefer not to go to a hospital where hungover doctors were the rule.

TBH, I have heard Jang Hyuk's name more often than KRW's....and that's from someone that hasn't watched a drama from either one... BUT PSH is downright more popular. So, there's that.

And I have to agree with one of the posters that yeah, as an audience member, I'm not that patient (especially for K-Dramas that are usually only 16-24 episodes long, unless it's a long drama). I've given BM a good 4 episodes and it didn't wow me in the least and just gave me a headache filled with much anger towards the characters actions. How a drama starts off is how the audience is going to think that's it gonna be for the rest of the show's length, so for me, there really wasn't any point in sticking around when nothing in those 1st four episodes wowed me.

Sorry, not sorry that I'm not patient. But I might just pick it up after it ends since many have been saying it gets better right after ep 4 (LOL).

0

My 2c.

They both started their career around the same time but Jang Hyuk broke out first and has been a solid leading man both in films and dramas.

His project choices hasn't been a hit lately compared to Kim Rae-won but that doesn't mean his popularity is declining. He is unique and once you are into his acting style you'd become a fan for life imo.
His current drama just doesn't appeal to the masses like the lighter and easy watch Doctors but he is killing it and at the end of the day, that's what I'd remember.

Kim Rae-won's popularity has been increasing a lot lately with Punch and Doctors. Punch was not a rating hit but he put in a great performance. Doctor's popularity is a good thing for his career. I've always thought he was a bit underrated.
I'm glad he is getting some serious roles in films too. He is in a good place both in dramaland and Chungmuro.

Jang Hyuk really own his character in BM, it does not seems that his roles had been turned down by many actors before. And I have been his fan from Chuno's days and like you said, "once you are into his acting style you’d become a fan for life".. This is me.

Agree, KRW is a bit late to bloom. Never be his fan until the Punch came into the picture. Actually I like him better in serious role. For Doctors, I just feel so much cheesiness lol. But I still like him as a nice guy.

Agreed. BM is one of the best dramas in a while, but it is also not full of romance and cheese, which might explain it's low ratings. It is FAR better than Doctors (which I am on the verge of dropping). Both BM and Squad 38 are shows that started out slow and got much better. Doctors did the all too common k-drama thing of a couple good starter episodes and then went way downhill as far as any actual discernable plot goes.

I'm excited to watch W for Han Hyo Joo, but I will have to see the recap before I decide myself to watch it live or not. I trust Dramabeans enough to lead me in choosing what drama that I should watch next.

Yay for Good Wife. Good cast. Kim Seo-Hyung , Yoon Kye-Sang, Lee Won-Geun . Nana's a decent actress, I had only seen her on that Housemate (?) show .

I'm rooting for PU38 to crack that 5 percent mark, and soon! Though it's doing really well, I love it and want it to do even better <3

Same with The Good Wife - I feel like 5 percent is a given for all tvN weekend dramas now, so for Jeon Do-yeon's sake, I hope this stays good and keeps rising.

Rooting for my two shows too! They both have a shot at 5% or more for The Good Wife.

Unit 38's writer is pretty solid. I'm still nervous about the writer for Good Wife. It's safe so far and this cast definitely made it better.

I can say this over and over again, this drama episodes are epitome of adrenaline at it's best. Every single episode leaves me in awe, I knew I could trust SIG, he's a 10/10 actor, and I'm never disappointed with the projects he chooses.

Anyone know if BGS's ratings for its timeslot is considered decent or not?

I would say ratings for this drama are good, especially if we consider which actors are cast(not as big as for UF) and how much money was spent on promoting this drama (not much). It is definitely not rating's monster but still would be considered as successful.
I didn't watch it but I'm happy for Namgoong Min, at least now he wouldn't have to play second leads anymore

Thanks. Good to know it's considered okay although not stellar at least not a big flop. Yeah, I really wanted this to do well or decent for NGM's sake. He deserves so much (although it's not like the other actresses, actors, or acting-dols doesn't). He's a veteran actor and at an age where success is so important in his career. It's sad his mainstream recognition came so late but at least he got there a little bit than not at all. Anyway since BGS has ended I hope to see him in more leading projects in the future, or at least dynamic second lead roles. Yay panda~

The rating is good. tvN is pretty smart to put Ghost at the 11pm slot so it won't compete with the general stations' primetime shows.
It's not in direct competition with Doctors, Monster or Beautiful Mind.

Considering these are the highest ratings SBS has had for a weekend drama in the last 3 years, it's definitely a success, and something of a dark horse since they didn't promote it much.

And I get the impression it has more online buzz than the competing drama in the time slot too, even though that has higher ratings.

Crossing my fingers that SBS weekend's rating can continue to do well ( even not the highest). I think it is a good strategy for shorter drama like 20 episodes instead of the ordinary weekend drama 50 epi. The storyline also different from the ordinary weekend drama.

And what is waiting after BGS? It is Kim Hee Ae and Ji Jin Hee's drama Second To Last Love. I pray this will achieve high rating. Watched the trailer, and I think it will be good drama. ;)

You know what, I like UF, since it reminds me of Secret, a melodrama type, most pitiful heroine as a main ingredient. Perhaps, just perhaps if the story doesn't put a dead sentence kind of disease to one of the lead then the viewer will love it more.

While everyone talking about the competition between W and UF, I am here just praying 'Wanted' will maintain the rating. Hahha... Personally, I feel they deserve more than this. Yes, there are many flaws (esp in editing), but I can say 'Wanted' such a well written drama (so far). I am happy PU38 and The Good Wife have a pretty good rating. Good job! Acting and directing, TOP! Truthfully, i watch both Doctors and Beautiful Mind. I fell sad and happy at the same time. They have really different story, so (for me) I cant compare. They give me different enjoyment of watching a show. It will be great if their rating battle going neck to neck.

I've been watching a couple of these dramas and just a few thoughts...

The Good Wife - Started watching for JDY but I didn't have high expectations going in really. It's a pleasant surprise. The acting is absolutely fantastic. I'm not sure how it compares to the original, but I'm enjoying it immensely. I also appreciate how it's sticking to the American format; even the music sounds like it came straight out of an American series. I could be completely wrong though since I've never finished a US TV series because they are seemingly never-ending.

Lucky Romance - What a disappointment. Even though this was a filler drama for me really, but it's underwhelming. The last two episodes were exceptionally dull as someone's mentioned. I think the ratings drop is a pretty good indication of the show's quality.

Wanted - It's a thriller which doesn't really build up much suspense. Also, this may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't think KAJ is very convincing with her portrayal. But that may be because of how her character is written as well. The recent episodes are improving though, and I'm quite looking forward to how everything ties up in the end.

Bring it on, Ghost - Perhaps it's because I watched it RAW but it's so boring that I have zero desire to watch the subbed version. I really hoped that this will be good, but I'm going to put this on hold.

Bring it Ghost is one of those silly shows that is entertaining for about 2 episodes. But soon you grow very tired of all the stupid slapstick and just plain dumb.

Totally agree with you on Wanted. I wanted it to be good but it's less gripping than I expected so I eventually dropped it. I don't think Kim Ahjoong is a bad actress at all, but it's just that I've seen Lee Boyoung glaring into the camera with boiling hatred in God's Gift: 14 Days, and that was hard to top.

At this point there are just two dramas I care about - the good wife and PU 38. Awesome acting and storyline in both. PU38 is full of surprises and I like the chemistry between all the characters of the team... TGW on the other hand is intense and smoldering. I totally have a girl crush on Jeon do Yeon. This is the first project of hers for me and I swear i am going to watch all. And the two men- oh man they have such grey characters. I can't help root for all of them. In short, unapologetically addicted.

W I think will win the ratings battle against UF. LSG has never failed in ratings as far as I can remember and not only that, they were highly highly rated. Plus HHJ comeback to the small screen is big. I understand the genre could be a ding, but I don't think it will prevent it from getting good ratings, unless it's really confusing. I think the acting will be stellar, another plus. This sounds like one that I will marathon once it finishes.

UF is the one I am watching and I am not sure it will live up to the hype as people report. I didn't follow the hype so I didn't know prior to watching it. Plus kbs likes to do that kind of media play. As it appears now 100% melo is where it's headed. I can't imagine that the ratings would suddenly jump up esp since ratings went down in week 2 over week 1. If it can stay in double digits that would be great.

Well...

Ep2: 12.5%
Ep3: 11.9%
Ep4: 11.0%

It didn't see any type of rise this week. It actually fell quite a bit

I am really really happy that 38 Police Squad is doing so so well with other 3-4%. I still want it to break the 5% mark tho.
But yeah, did anyone watch the latest episodes ? So amazing with all the tensions and twists. And how can I forget, those Jung Do/Sung Hee scenes ? Too cute, hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. Sooyoung and Seo In Guk are killing it together. They are just so so perfect ♥

Gah, I want to talk more about it so bad lol. Please more recaps :P.

I'm actually surprised with episode 9 &10! just when I thought everything is starting to flag down and fizzle out (as symptomatic of most kdramas), I didn't expect that the recent eps will be a killer. at one point, I find myself all giddy with Jung-Do / Sung-Hee scenes, heartsick with their flashbacks, and thrilled with all the twists and turns. aaaaagh I just love it!

Can't agree more on SIG and Sooyoung are killing it as Jung Do and Sung Hee. Given their very little screen time together to develop the romance, they did it effectively that every minute and second speaks a lot about their story. Love it!

It's kind of weird how every week we see comments complaining about the rating that Doctors get. Well, it's a straightforward romantic drama that doesn't pretend to be deeper than what it is, so it appeals to many people, including me, because that's just what they want.

You cannot stop ppl from being "weird", it happened with DOTS too. Well maybe you can say, not everyone like straightforward drama like this, including me. I am watching too, but just as a filler, far from favourite.

But If I am Koreans, and watching the tv at home with my family, probably my family will choose Doctors over other two shows. Why? It is straightforward and easy to watch.
Probably, this answer too why daily drama / weekend drama in Koreans are so addictive among Koreans especially ahjummas. Despite of craziness and makjang-ish , it is easy to watch, do not have to think so hard on the contents of the drama. ;) My myself watching Korean daily drama to fill my leisure time. It is cliche, not good but addictive. LOL

Currently watching both Five Enough and Yeah, That's How It Is. I bit behind on both, but I can see why Five Enough has the higher ratings. Just a stronger drama with better writing I think. YTHIS isn't bad, but the characters don't feel nearly as engaging.
