Crossdressing confusion begins in Moonlight Drawn By Clouds

Ah finally. Here’s a glimpse at the budding romance between prince Park Bo-gum and his crossdressing eunuch Kim Yoo-jung in KBS’s new Monday-Tuesday historical drama, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds. The newest teaser is a montage of swoony moments for the couple, who start out as tentative friends, and then become increasingly confused by their feelings for one another. Sigh, why does my heart flutter so, when gender-bendy hijinks are in store?
The youth fusion sageuk stars Park Bo-gum as a young Crown Prince Hyomyeong of Joseon, a brilliant young man who spends a good deal of time outside the palace walls, posing as a scholar. Kim Yoo-jung plays a young lady who makes a living by dressing as a man and giving out love advice; she takes the crossdressing a bit far when she accepts a position in the palace as a eunuch, and it’s there that she befriends the prince.
In the latest teaser, Park Bo-gum scoffs, “Friends? Since when have we become friends?” But contrary to his words, he smiles secretly when she’s around and obviously enjoys messing with her. Kim Yoo-jung counters, “If not friends, then what are we?” That’s when he suddenly pulls her in like he’s about to kiss her (in a ditch? What a place to have a romantic moment).
She averts his gaze and asks, “Why are you staring at me like that?” In a different scene, he gazes at her and answers, “I don’t know why I keep seeing someone else in you… this woman…” Then in an epilogue, Kim Yoo-jung stares wide-eyed at Lee Moon-shik as he sharpens a blade, and she asks him, “What are you going to make me?” He says with an evil laugh, “A eunuch!” Ha, it’s not like she actually has any parts to lose in the deal, but I guess it’s a shocking proposition anyway.

Bogum looks more like Jo Insung when he was in high school with cropped hair. He was even referred to as "Mokdong's Jo Insung" even then.

People were wondering how one could believe that such a beautifully obvious girl is a man. But I would say that in comparison to PBG, she does look like a pretty boy, because he sure is a beooooootiful boy :P

To be specific he has long arms, wide shoulders and rough hands also his veins visible tough his face has pretty features his lips and jawline (below nose line?) would make it hard to imagine him as girl so lets see ?

Totally agree! He is what I always call a "pretty boy" because seriously, give him a wig, cover his Adan's apple and he would be prettier than many many many girls!

I swear kim yoo jung was born with a natural cat eye sans any eyeliner. i love park bo gum but i dont think i'll ever get over this casting cause in my head i'm like 'ha, you're a genius prince but you can't even tell that's a girl?' disbelief not suspended

I'm actually happy that the pressure for the ratings and the high expectations is on Scarlet Heart.
I haven't seen Park Bo-gum in a sageuk before. I hope he'll do well too. This is the kind of genre that his leading lady can do in her sleep.
I'm so ready for something sweet and cute. This might be the perfect balance for the much darker Scarlet Heart.

But they made the death penalty for cross dressing in the first place, obviously means someone did it, right?
You can't make a punishment for a crime that you don't even know exists. People in the days of horse drawn carts would not think to create laws against drunk driving cars. Same with this.

It's possible that it happened but women weren't important enough for historians to write about.
This was the era of Confucian and brilliant scholars like Sambong who wrote the first code of laws for Joseon. Not all crimes with the death penalty were committed first before it was written down.
I think this has more to do with disrupting the social order. A mere common/slave woman impersonating a palace official with the intention to fool the crown prince of Joseon will definitely get her head chopped off.
BUT, the fantasy part of our story will step in and save her life because our crown prince probably fell in love with her.
Maybe they picked Prince Hyomyeong on purpose because he ruled the country as Crown Prince Regent with authority of the king. He could pardoned her and make her his concubine.
Sorry I'm excited and I can't control my imagination lol.

I believe many crossdressing happen in joseon era or in old time. At that time, woman reputation is not reliable as worker except being housewife or entertainer, so if someone want to make money by going to trade market, they better disguise as a man.
It easier to get a job as a man and if you can look belivable, why not do it.
I remember a story about a chineese princess that like to disguised herself as man when she is living in japan. She later become a spy but more often wear man's clothes, some said, she disguised as a man cause it easier to be accepted in many places without facing social stigma and get a job (you can corrected me if you have more information ^^)
Not all of crosdress gonna record in history, maybe it's not important people, but I believe in the possibility.
It just not all people good at that and look as beautiful as the drama.

Ikr? Yoo Jung has a pair of big and beautiful eyes. But you may give a chance to first episode since Prince will be suspicious of her to get go and be wondering about her beauty. I don't know what happened after that to convince him otherwise but he must know it subconsciously looking at what he says in teaser he is not in denial of loving a man he is in denial of whom he loves is a man lol ?

“A eunuch!” Ha, it’s not like she actually has any parts to lose in the deal. Lol but how did she become one without being checked? NM, don't want to think about it.
I kept wondering why they would make her an eunuch instead of a brilliant young scholar. I guess it makes the cross-dressing a bit believable? Eunuchs were castrated while they were young and some even before puberty so their voice didn't change at all.
This is starting to sink in and I'm loving our young couple.

Yeah, they wanted to make sure they didn't sire any children with any of the women in the palace. I remember a part in The King and I where they discover that one of the eunuchs wasn't castrated properly when he got a maid pregnant, and things didn't end too well for him.

The two look so good and I already feel giddy from watching their scenes together. I was looking forward to how Kim Yoo Jung would actually look and act as a guy and I am quite surprised and impressed (yet again). Now, I'm actually hoping to see a glimse of the characters as well (e.g. Jinyoung, Kwak Shi Yang, Chae Soo Bin). But there's still plenty if time left to release more teasers so I'm not worried. Although, I hear that the premiere date for the drama isn't confirmed yet? Goodness knows how excited I am for this drama!

Wait.. Bogum's role - Crown Prince Hyomyeong is based on the actual prince in history. And in reality the prince actually died at the age of 20.. I do hope that this drama will not have any sad ending to it, cos I just can't bear to have my heart break seeing Bogum acting this part out, if it is any at all part of the drama's story telling cos I cant freaking wait for it to start

To be completely honest, even though I adore both KYJ and PBG, I wasn't planning on watching this drama at all. I actually thought the premise wasn't that good; I never understood how "youthful" and "sageuk" could go together. But this teaser actually has me hooked. I don't know if it's the simplicity of it, but it seems to have completely captured that "youthful, yet sageuk" mood in a way that can't really be explained through words.
Is it weird that I'm totally excited now?

There sure were teenageers in the Joseon Dynasty so it's not far-fetch to have a youth sageuk, just like Sungkyungkwan Scandal which is basically about college life. It's just that in K-dramas they usually concentrate on the adults which makes historical dramas all the more stuffy and well, old.

Well, to be fair, in those days people went straight from childhood to adulthood, so there really weren't teenagers in the modern sense in Joseon--if they were poor, shit got real too fast to indulge their youth, and if they were privileged, becoming successful would mean putting their lives at stake in a system where politics were kill-or-be-killed.
Sungkyunkwan Scandal was not so much a sageuk as a campus drama decked out in period drag. This show will try for something similar, or at least it should lol. Real, honest-to-god sageuk are about making actual history come to life.

Sungkyunkwan Scandal was a sageuk for me, a great one at that. The romance and friendship are the major part of it but SKKS also has profound and unpretentious storylines about the social class system and ruling philosophy. Those were my favorite parts about SKKS.

It had some social commentary, sure, but it lacked the kind of credibility to give those themes depth or historical significance. There were no consequences for anyone when they transgressed gender and class lines, characters espoused the kind of social liberalism that is a product of modern society, and definitely not the world they lived in, and Jeongjo's reforms were treated as nothing more than a source of fetch quests for the main characters. The fact that the heroine (a woman) could get her happy ending as a professor at an academy for Neo-Confucian elites in 1800s Joseon while married to one of her coworkers says it all, really.
Sungkyunkwan Scandal patterns itself after Painter of the Wind (a little too closely), but I would compare it to Jejoongwon here. Jejoongwon also has a lot of great stuff to say about classism and sexism in Joseon, but does not manage to situate its critique within the time period or come from a perspective that is believable and organic to its setting--it's a decent show, but it's a human drama dressed up as a sageuk, not a real sageuk.

Yeah, I'm hardwired to think of politics and history when I hear the word sageuk, and I'm a huge fan of intense sageuks. It's just that I never actually found myself interested in dramas like Sungkyunkwan Scandal and thought that the whole youthful, light coming-of-age sageuk thing sounded, to be honest, ridiculous (along the same vein of what juniper said). But when watching this teaser, I felt the sageuk-ness of it along with the youth romance aspect of it rather than seeing the setting used as an accessory, if you get what I mean.

That's what I thought initially but then I realized it's a tease moment. See Ra On looks uncomfortable because she wears lots of layers to hide her figure and it's hot to her unlike Prince who is just pissed that his eunuch doesn't listen so he is actually looking at sweats on her face and thinking I knew. By the time Ra On's imagination go wild he will say something like. "Just take it of you will get sick at this rate how bothersome” Face palm...
