Running Man: Episode 302
by gummimochi
Gathering around the table will be a dangerous adventure this week as the cast will travel the island to gather some of the freshest ingredients available. The missions will have them digging for crustaceans, battling the poultry, and trying their best to stay away from painful stings. This week also brings the return of the trademark nametag ripping game, one that has a catch of its own.
EPISODE 301. Broadcast on June 5, 2016.
We kick off today’s episode in Ganghwado, where a lavish feast awaits our cast members. Jae-suk is the first to arrive and loads an assortment of food on a blue-colored plate to match his hat.
But luxury always comes at a price, as Jae-suk unveils today’s theme: “Dangerous Table”, where he and his team members will harvest the original ingredients on his plate. When Jong-kook arrives, Jae-suk is certain that the health nut will end up with a protein-heavy plate.
He takes small solace when Jong-kook takes the white-colored plate, meaning that they’ll be on opposite teams. He’s happy to wipe the joy off of Jong-kook’s face by telling him that they have to catch and harvest everything they’re eating today: “You need to be scolded by some chickens today!”
Jae-suk cackles when Ji-hyo chooses a variety of food to pile onto her white plate, then gripes when Suk-jin picks up a blue plate. Both Gary and Haha are shocked upon hearing the rules.
Kwang-soo chooses a blue plate and drizzles on a bit of honey. Uh oh, are they going to have to collect some of that too? Gary realizes that he’s stuck with the three unluckiest people who are prepared to bring him down with them.
There’s one last spot open for the White Team; cue Yeo Jin-gu (Jackpot), who cautiously loads his plate with food. Like the others, he’s shocked upon learning the rules from the cast.
The PD explains the goal of today’s race: finish the missions the fastest or be left to dine at the Dangerous Table, filled with healthy, but not so scrumptious-looking foods. Among those foods is stinky tofu, which Gary says the smell sticks around for two weeks.
There will be helpful opportunities available at each mission station, and finishing these preliminary missions the fastest will give that team an advantage in the final mission.
In the car, Jin-gu shares that he now has his driver’s license, which prompts Jong-kook to ask which girl group member he’d like to go for a drive with. Haha guesses it would be Secret’s Jun Hyo-seong, and calls her up right away.
It’s cute how excited Jin-gu gets upon hearing her voice, and how bashful he sounds when Haha puts him on the phone. Meanwhile, Ji-hyo and Gary take a boat out and gape at how long the bait is.
After casting their rods, they wait for any fish to bite. Gary’s fishing rod is the first one to show some activity, but there’s nothing at the other end. He gets excited every time there’s a little tug, but catches nothing but tiny waves.
At the same time, the Unlucky Trio drive out to a mud flat to catch crabs. Suk-jin has to be reined in when he compliments the pretty female PD, and when Kwang-soo chuckles at his thought that crabs have a sense of smell, he retaliates by smacking his face with the pig skin.
They have five minutes to catch 20 crabs, so there’s no time to lose. They collectively freak out when they discover a worm, but then flip out excitedly when Jae-suk picks a random spot and finds a crab.
Soon they fall into a rhythm and pluck out each crab from their bowl when time is up. Needless to say, they grab 20 easily and are told that the crabs actually flock to pig skin… it’s just that you need to wait an entire day for them to collect.
After telling the PD to pick a chance card herself so that they don’t risk their bad luck, they complain when they find that she has even worse luck than they do: “It’s void! She picked it!”
So they do a do-over, and Suk-jin chuckles nervously when they get another dud. The trio decides to head out to the strawberry field, but then they’re told to head out to the bee farm because the White Team has sent them there.
Turns out it was Jin-gu who had picked that card after collecting eels, and Haha had chosen the bee farm. Kwang-soo gets reamed for choosing honey earlier, especially since the farm is so far away.
The trio is unwilling to even get out of the car when they arrive, since there are bees buzzing everywhere. They complain even more upon receiving yellow-colored beekeeping outfits: “Don’t the bees like this color?!”
HA, Suk-jin’s nose is too big for the outfit and Kwang-soo’s legs are too long for the pants. The staff ends up taping up Jae-suk’s exposed ankles, and Kwang-soo’s mention of Jae-suk’s traumatic experience with bees prompts Jae-suk to remind him that he’s the reason they’re here right now.
The trio is given a walkthrough on beekeeping, and Jae-suk is given a chance to get over his fear of bees. He shakes off the frame, and they all flip when the bees buzz around them.
While Jae-suk is cursing Jong-kook out, Spartakooks is busy asking Jin-gu what other idols he likes. Jin-gu’s favorite in Apink is Hayoung, so Haha calls up Bomi to find out what type of guy Hayoung likes.
When Bomi starts saying that Hayoung likes guys like Lee Min-ki, Haha cuts her off: “Doesn’t she like guys like Yeo Jin-gu?” But then she puts Hayoung on the phone, and she thinks it’s Kwang-soo pulling her leg when Jin-gu introduces himself.
He and Hayoung plays the telepathy game (where saying the same thing puts them on the same wavelength), and when he invites her out to a meal, she gladly accepts. Then Haha immediately calls Hyo-seong to let her know that Jin-gu has a new idol noona in his heart.
He puts Jin-gu on the phone, who says, “Noona, you’ll have to treat me to a meal”. She responds flatly: “You’re a funny guy.”
With that, they pull up to the chicken field where they have three minutes to catch at least two different chickens. Jin-gu gives chase when he spots the first chicken; he takes his time tracking it down, and soon they only have one minute to catch the other one.
Jong-kook manages to catch the second with one hand, and afterwards, Haha instructs Jin-gu to give a one-liner poem with the word “chicken” (dak). Jin-gu: “Dak… cheo?” Or in English: “Shut up.”
Jin-gu picks a free item card, so they instantly pick up the crab item without doing any work.
Gary and Ji-hyo are dining on ramyun on the boat when there’s a tug on the fishing rod. Ji-hyo gets up and pulls in a fish, which means she gets to leave first. So Gary casts out five lines, believing that he’s truly unlucky if he still can’t catch anything. And yay, he finally catches a fish.
Over at the bee farm, Jae-suk freaks out when he thinks a bee has gotten into his suit. Kwang-soo sees it too, and carefully pulls back Jae-suk’s suit. That essentially exposes his head to Jae-suk’s nightmare, but thankfully they get the bee out without letting any more in.
They collect their honey, and the next thing we know, the trio is dressed in bee suits while the picture-in-picture teaches us that they did a little dance in them. They divvy up their chance cards like before, and Suk-jin volunteers to sit this round out.
And that’s too bad because Suk-jin had the free item card. All that’s left is a dud and a chance to steal the other team’s item. Kwang-soo and Jae-suk play rock-paper-scissors, then switches their cards for good measure.
They celebrate when Jae-suk chooses the steal card, and happily take the eel away from the White Team. We barrel through the other items, and after the White Team win the team battle for the vegetables, the last chance card is left as a mystery.
It’s late in the day when everyone gathers together with their food items. The Blue Team has one more item than the White Team, but the latter still has their chance card.
It’s a steal card, so the White Team takes back their eels. Since they’ve won, they pick up their “advantage”: a revival card. The Blue Team immediately voices their displeasure: “There’s no one there to be eliminated!” “You should be giving that to us who have a greater chance of be ousted!”
The crew introduces some surprise cheerleaders: rookie girl group TWICE. The girls choose between different-colored spoons that designate their teams for the final mission, entitled “Dangerous Recipe”.
The Blue Team will cook up a Western dish whilst the White Team will make a Korean dish. Each team will hide the names of the ingredients the other team will need under their own nametags. The first team to successfully rip off all the nametags for one complete “dish”, wins.
There’s also a catch: one person on each team will be designated as the Pepper Bomb—ripping off that person’s nametag means an instant loss. However, there are hints about said person contained in old-fashioned lunchboxes hidden throughout the building.
Kwang-soo decides he shouldn’t rip off any nametags given his bad luck streak. He and Gary decide to rip off Ji-hyo’s nametag, though Gary leaves the task to him because of his history with Ji-hyo. Ha.
Ji-hyo, on the other hand, figures that Kwang-soo is acting confident because he’s the Pepper Bomb. Soon she’s outnumbered when the mat hyungs arrive, but they all run when Jong-kook arrives with Tsuyu.
We learn that Jong-kook is the White Team’s Pepper Bomb, though the Blue Team believes it might be Tsuyu since she’s sticking by Jong-kook’s side.
Meanwhile, Jin-gu finds a lunchbox that tells him that the Blue Team’s Pepper Bomb is a guy. That rules out all the TWICE girls on the Blue Team, and Haha finds another hint that confirms it.
Chaeyoung leaves Sana behind when they spot Jin-gu and Dahyun. Suffice it to say, Sana is eliminated and the White Team pick up the cabbage item. Thanks to their previous clues, Nayeon and Haha know it’s safe to eliminate all the TWICE girls on the Blue Team despite their protests.
Jin-gu freezes when he joins the fray, as the White Team TWICE members are busy trying to rip off Nayeon and Momo’s nametags. Eventually Momo is eliminated, but Nayeon is declared safe because her nametag is stuck to her hair.
It’s in that moment she realizes she has an advantage if said nametag is still attached to her hair. Oho.
Jong-kook instructs the TWICE girls to eliminate Chaeyoung, but then Tsuyu rips off Jae-suk’s nametag… which reveals that Jae-suk is the Pepper Bomb. Uh oh.
The Blue Team celebrates their win, as Tsuyu apologetically says she thought Kwang-soo was the Pepper Bomb. That means the White Team gets to dine on the health-conscious food, including stinky tofu and preserved duck eggs.
Everyone takes a piece, and though Ji-hyo isn’t averse to skatefish, the pungent smell still surprises her. Nearly all the White Team members wear a fierce grimace on their faces thanks to one stinky loss.

I adore The Unlucky Trio because I can relate to them so much. A bee entering Jae Suk's suit -- how does that even happen!? Back–to–back kkwang's -- only these three. However! Today, they were not so unlucky after all. I cheered
upwhen Blue Team won with no hints and no ingredients. As Blue Team expected, White Team had no need for their revival card.Poor Tzuyu looked like she was about to cry. I'm glad Haha and Jong Kook reassured her it was okay. NaYeon is genius for leaving her nametag in her hair. I wished the game lasted longer, so NaYeon would be invincible to even Spartakooks. I like how White Team paired up a Running Man member (or Jin Gu) with a Twice member. In the Blue Team, Running Man and Twice walked by themselves. (Our) Ji Hyo barely contributed to the name tag elimination other than holding Mina's hand. And we never even saw Suk Jin or Twice's JiHyo.

When Kwangsoo poured on the honey I started laughing out loud. :D
It's good that YJS and Kookie are the "captains" for each team because they had lots of experience gathering food in Family Outing. And I'm glad I didn't watch this ep (just read your recaps, gummi) or I'd be craving Korean food at 3am again. :O

If only the name-tag game had lasted longer, then we would've gotten the chance to see more of everyone but it's okay. Overall I felt it was a fun episode, what I appreciate about The Unlucky Trio formation is that we get more Ji Suk Jin screen-time, I genuinely feel people don't realize how funny he can be. Yeo Jin Gu is growing up !! Every time I see him I get reminded of how old I am lol.
Something that came to my mind after this episode and seeing an article saying the PD wants to invite Twice back on for an episode because of their short screen-time. HELLO ! Can we get a Song Ji Hyo driven episode, I think besides her & Haha everyone else has had one where they came up with an idea and had an episode based on it. Ji Suk Jin and Sherlock Homes, Kim Jong Kook and that musical one, Gary getting kidnapped helped by Gil and most recent being Lee Kwang Soo revenge episode with that maze etc. Yoo Jae Suk hasn't had one either but his had plenty of episodes based on him though. I just think it'd be nice if the Production team worked with Ji Hyo on a specific idea and made an episode on it or if Ji Hyo came up with something herself cause that's how the previous episodes I mentioned came about.

I understand where you're coming from and yes those episode were central SJH episodes, I should've been clearer with my statement. An episode where there is a plot twist and we find out that she was behind everything like the ones I mentioned before a revenge type theme (if that makes sense). JSJ, KJK, Gary & LKS all did those episodes cause they wanted to get back at the members in a way. Pretty much I want a 1vs7 episode for her.
Princess Ji Hyo episode she was just treated like royalty and there wasn't much to it, same goes for Sleeping Beauty.

Wait..didn't she had it on special China episode? Forget the number. She was there on second day, secretly. She wears classic heroes lady and partnered with JK as her assistent. I thought it's count as her 1x7.

Oh yeah I remember that episode and then she flew back to Korea and ended up in hospital due to exhaustian (cause she was shooting a drama at that time).
I just want an episode where she has creative control over it. The China special she teamed up with KJK. I just want a stand alone one for her. Same goes for Haha & even Yoo Jae Suk - something that they have created and come to the producers and make it happen.

I'm just getting warm fuzzy feelings that we all have RM memories from way way waaaaaaaaay back. :D
@Katherine, I get your point now. Yeah, I'd love an ep planned by Ji-hyo. No one will probably escape cause her assets are skill + luck and that's a tough one to beat. Haha~

@Mary - IKR ! Its been around for so long now, it'd be weird whenever it does come to an end cause there are so many memories and emotions attached to the show.
One things for sure RM Production needs to bring back a member based episode, hopefully they're brainstorming new ideas and themes for at least the rest of this year.

She also had a CSI (Chung Sung Im) episode where she ran off with the gold prize in the beginning and the members had to get 'clues' to chase after her in a helicopter.
Besides, even if the episode reveals that "KJK or Gary" was behind it, it is till the writers who wrote the episode story and gave the protagonist spot to a certain member.

This was a pretty fun/funny ep.
Some of the best/most fun moments of RM have been when they were in a car/bus/train - traveling from one place to the next and here, the "let's set-up Yeo Jin-gu w/ a noona" (and make him uncomfortable in the process) was great - esp. Hyo-seong's comeback when Jin-gu was being cheeky.
Gary likely was getting nibbles and losing bait due to not putting the bait onto the hook properly.
Soooo typical of Suk-jin to be drawn in by a pretty face.
Those crab catchers wasted precious time at the beginning and were lucky they spotted that tiny one to hit 20 - but to no avail.
The 3 bad-luck fellas took advantage of the pretty PD being a rookie and basically awarded themselves a 2nd opportunity at getting a good chance card - but to no avail (served them right).
Seems like Kookie's time w/ "Sweet & Savage" Yejin (on FO) was time well-spent (quite a move on grabbing that chicken).
Things didn't look good for the "bad-luck" team+Gary when they had victory snatched away at the last moment when the White Team got the "steal" card and having both KJK and the revival card.
Nayeon was a total gamer (all the TWICE girls went at it pretty well).
Quite the reversal - a rarity in seeing Kookie and Ms. Mong get the punishment.

So I just had the craziest experience - thank goodness I watched this episode...this morning, my dog and I are out in the backyard and I think I hear the traffic from the highway but say to myself, that's weird cause it's Saturday...then I look up and see the shadow of thousands of bees behind me...like in horror film, I turn around knowing what I'm going to see and huge swarm of bees!!! I make my way to the back door slowly and call my dog inside....turns out they are living in my crepe myrtle tree and bee guy says they are not dangerous, but their hive got full and they are looking for a new place to live. He is here now getting them out of my tree! Anyway thanks to this episode of RM I saw the KS AND JS dealing with bees and stayed calm and knew that someone would come and get them!! The bee keeper even brought me some local honey - I wish I could post pictures, I only took 250 of them!!! THANKS RUNNING MAN!!!

I absolutely agree with this point. There was nothing the girls could do and it came to a point I was going to fast fwd all their scenes. I cringe whenever I see them...if it wasn't for our dearest Yeo Jin Goo around, I'd have skip this episode. And I feel like i am an aging dinosaur whenever I see him becoz he's indeed growing up so fast into a handsome young man.

Are we watching the same thing? I thought they were very active and besides the intro they were pretty normal girls. They weren't overtly shy or cutesey and some of them was even totally game for it.
The girl with the nametag stuck to her hair was smart for playing up her ageyo to Jong Kook while trying to rip his name tag off

They had gumption and weren't so bad as a whole, but as rookies and girls, they have to be SOOO careful about their 'images' otherwise popularity will never grow if by one misstep they seem too aggressive, too competitive, too whatever. So, I agree, don't give a special episode to new girls whose only avenue will be "cute", give it to some veterans who will act as crazy as they can because they can.

After reading the reolies here about these girls i decided to check them out to see if they were as people here made them out to be.
I find it totally unfair on some of the comments here who even without giving them a proper look already got on the bandwagon of saying they act cute. Is there just a general hate for all idol girls? Boys are okay though right?
This isn't even just this girl group but girl groups in general besides 2ne1 seem to get hate on this site.

For me, it's not hate for girl groups, but just recognizing their limitations is a variety setting. As gung-ho as some young girls are, they will not be any competition to the veterans of RM who have been running/pulling name tags for years. So then for it to be entertaining to watch, it's not a physical game, but a game of chance or betrayal or whatever story the writers prepare.
The girls on opposite teams scrambling while Jin-gu stood helplessly by (he didn't want to rough-handle anyone) was amusing enough, but not thrilling competition.
Boy groups can take more physical competition, both in their physical capabilities and in their images (it's a sexist stereotype, yes, that guys can be aggressive/competitive).
I certainly don't hate girl groups; but I'm not hugely big on idol groups anyways.
