Oh Hae-young Again: Episode 11

Not that it’s ever been easy having the same name as her rival/frenemy, but the complication takes on extra consequences for Hae-young today, leaving emotions running high as pride and love battle it out. We always knew this coil of a misunderstanding would be a challenge for Do-kyung to work out, but the more time starts running out on him, the more worried I’m getting…

EPISODE 11: “In pain, in pain”

Do-kyung wakes during the drive back to Seoul, and smiles to see Hae-young sleeping with her head in his lap. He shields her eyes from the morning sun, and makes his decision and thinks to himself, “Let’s go. Let’s go all the way.”

Tae-jin is waiting at Hae-young’s parents’ house when they arrive home and he bows deeply, but they both move to walk right past them. He says that Hae-young isn’t answering her phone, and when Mom barks, “Why would she answer your calls?” Tae-jin gets on his knees right there in the street.

He apologizes, but Mom has no intention of accepting his apology and tells him to leave. Dad feels sorry for Tae-jin and urges him up, asking how all this happened to him. He tells Tae-jin about Hae-young’s other apartment, and that he assumes she spent the night there.

Do-kyung and Hae-young arrive home, and she rushes up the stairs to get ready for work. Halfway up she stops and turns, and Do-kyung smiles, knowing exactly what’s coming because he saw it a long time ago — Hae-young runs to him, and he happily catches her in his arms.

Nobody is having a good morning at the family house — Jin-sang has somehow lost his phone and his car, and Hoon is having some sort of crisis involving his right hand. He ends up splattering Do-kyung with jam trying to use only one hand, and he’s forced to show Do-kyung and Soo-kyung that in his sleep, An-na gave him very bright, very permanent fake nails. HAHAHA.

He complains that he had grand plans to pick a fight with Do-kyung and leave the house, but now he can’t with such fabulous nails. Do-kyung invites him to go ahead, but Hoon wants to look cool while flouncing, I guess. He’d planned out every move, including his facial expressions, and ominously warns Do-kyung to just wait.

Soo-kyung grows alarmed that she actually feels jealous when she hears about Jin-sang’s hot night with a woman, and she orders him to go back to his own home. He retorts in French that she’s not so squeaky-clean — she had an affair with a married man. They argue back and forth in French, and HA, Do-kyung just rolls his eyes and walks off.

Tae-jin tries to find Hae-young at work, but she’s not there yet. He runs into a friend of Hae-young’s who recognizes him, and the other Hae-young seems surprised to hear that our Hae-young used to be engaged to him.

Our Hae-young hides when she sees Tae-jin getting in his car, not anxious to see him. Later he texts her asking if she’s angry with him, and he promises to keep apologizing until she forgives him. She texts back asking him to meet with her tonight, because she has something she needs to tell him.

When Do-kyung calls to ask Hae-young out for tonight, she says it will have to be later, and she honestly tells him that she’ll be seeing Tae-jin. They did see each other recently, though they didn’t get back together as she’d told Do-kyung, but she wants to end things cleanly.

Do-kyung insists on seeing her first, before she meets with Tae-jin, and Hae-young doesn’t pick up on his urgent energy. She jokes that maybe she should have dressed up fancier today, and warns him not to bring her flowers at work or get on his knees or anything embarrassing like that.

On his way to Hae-young’s office, Do-kyung talks to himself as if he’s speaking to Hae-young: “I won’t push you away anymore out of guilt. I just want to love you. No matter what I tell you, please don’t abandon me. Please hold onto me tightly.” Awww.

Tae-jin doesn’t understand why Hae-young is canceling plans with him two days in a row, but she promises to see him the next day. He’s disappointed, but he accepts her apology. But he’s gotten several dozen roses and has a ring, and he decides to head to her office anyway and surprise her. Oh, this is gonna be bad.

Tae-jin sees Hae-young across the street, and she smiles and waves… but at Do-kyung, who is standing at the corner. When Tae-jin sees him, it hits him like a ton of bricks — his ex-fiancee is seeing the man who ruined his life. And without knowing the true story, the only thing Tae-jin can conclude is that Do-kyung did it all to get Hae-young.

Tae-jin sees red and lunges at Do-kyung, punching him so hard he hits the pavement. Tae-jin picks Do-kyung up and moves to punch him again, but Hae-young runs across the busy street and puts herself between the two men. Tae-jin orders her away from Do-kyung, but she rounds on him and asks who he thinks he is — she’s not his fiancee anymore. Tae-jin tells her, “This is the bastard who ruined my business. He ruined my business and sent me to jail!”

Hae-young turns shocked eyes to Do-kyung, and Tae-jin asks him if he did it because he liked Hae-young. Crying now, Tae-jin violently smashes the roses, but Do-kyung never says a single word.

Hae-young gives Tae-jin a chance to explain, and he tells her how he learned about Do-kyung’s involvement from Chairman Jang. He never could figure out what Do-kyung had against him, but while he was in jail Jin-sang told him that Do-kyung did it because he was getting married to Oh Hae-young.

Our Hae-young makes the connection that Do-kyung must have thought Tae-jin was marrying the other Hae-young, and she says in a dazed voice, “It wasn’t me.” Do-kyung tries to take Hae-young away so he can explain everything, and for a moment she follows him. But she stops, and he drops her hand, and she walks away from both men.

Tae-jin turns and punches Do-kyung again, then kicks him in the stomach several times, and drags him up to yell in his face. How could he steal another man’s woman like this? He delivers several more vicious kicks and punches, and Do-kyung doesn’t even try to fight back.

Hae-young stands in the subway station for a long time, lost in thought, as trains arrive and leave without her. She thinks about everything that’s happened to her since Do-kyung caused Tae-jin to break off their engagement, and realizes that once again, all of these things happened to her because of the other Oh Hae-young, because Do-kyung loved her.

She thinks to herself that if he’d told her everything, that night that he’d been in a fight and she’d asked him who he fought with and why, she might have been able to accept it easily. But he hadn’t, and since then she’d fallen in love with him, and now it’s too late.

Hae-young goes to the pub that she knows the other Hae-young is at tonight, and pushes her out of her chair and to the ground. She screams, “You. You! YOU!!” while their coworkers struggle to pull her off the other Hae-young.

Do-kyung is mentally beating himself up, and he walks the streets with loyal Jin-sang trailing behind him. Hoon sees them and falls in line, and they even pick up Do-kyung’s three employees along the way — I love the image of these men following along, loving their brother and friend so much that they’re willing to just be with him, even if they can’t help ease his pain or even know why he’s hurting.

Eventually the other guys grab a car and continue following Do-kyung, while Jin-sang fills them in as to what’s happened. They’re super confused at the idea of two Oh Hae-youngs, and are shocked to hear that Do-kyung has fallen for the new Hae-young.

Later that night, Hee-ran admits to Hae-young that she thinks she started this whole thing by telling Do-kyung that “Oh Hae-young” was marrying Tae-jin. She didn’t realize that Do-kyung thought she meant the other Hae-young, and she feels terrible that she wasn’t more clear.

Do-kyung’s friends decide they need to find Hae-young for Do-kyung, but they find the wrong Hae-young first and quickly drive away. They catch up to Do-kyung and hustle him into the car, and drive all night, finding themselves at the beach the next morning. They’re trying so hard to cheer up Do-kyung that they’re coming off extra perky, which is pretty sweet.

The guys frolic in the waves while Do-kyung broods on the beach, threatening them with death if they dare touch him. But they grab him and throw him in the ocean anyway, which has got to sting on his poor cut-up face, but they do manage to snap him out of his funk a little bit.

Some pretty girls draw Jin-sang’s attention (Do-kyung: “You’re such an animal”) and he runs over to present his friends to them. But all conversation screeches to a halt when one girl says her name is Oh Hae-young, and all six guys just walk away. Ha. They resume their single-file support train, having accomplished nothing.

Hae-young’s office rumor mill is in full swing, with everyone wondering why our Hae-young would attack the other Hae-young out of the blue like that. The other Hae-young seeks out Soo-kyung, insisting she didn’t do anything to provoke the attack, and she’s hurt that Soo-kyung seems to take our Hae-young’s side, in this and in everything else.

She goes back to her desk and texts our Hae-young, who isn’t at work today, asking why she pounced on her that way. Our Hae-young is at her parents’ house in a funk and barely responsive to anything.

Mom gets fed up and demands to know what’s happening, but Hae-young just asks if Mom remembers the other Hae-young from when she was in school. Mom does remember her, and also how their windows would get smashed in by jilted boys getting the wrong house. Hae-young also remembers that she never got flowers or candy by mistake, only rocks — she feels like she was born to shoulder all of both Hae-youngs’ bad luck while the other Hae-young got all the good luck.

Hae-young wants to move, somewhere where nobody is better than her, so she can at least feel normal. Mom begs Hae-young to say what’s wrong, but Hae-young just sighs.

Hee-ran meets with Hoon regarding his movie script and tells him that it’s not terrible, but she doesn’t feel comfortable working with him considering their connection to Do-kyung. He hurt her friend, and Hee-ran wants to be loyal to Hae-young.

Hoon cringes when he realizes the situation, but Hee-ran starts running at the mouth about how she told Do-kyung about the impending marriage, but it’s not her fault he didn’t think there might be other Oh Hae-youngs. Hoon admits that he was shocked to learn what happened as well, and lies with bravado that he ordered Do-kyung to beg for Hae-young’s forgiveness.

Hee-ran spots Hoon’s fake nails and tells him to take them off, and he realizes that they actually pop off easily. One falls to the floor and he leans over to pick it up just as she crosses her legs, giving him an accidental eyeful, hee.

An-na chases Hoon around the convenience store when she sees that he took the nails off, but he fights back for once and yells at her that it’s humiliating to go around with fake nails. She says they’re proof he has a girlfriend, but he argues that it should be good enough that he tells everyone about her.

He asks if he really looks like a cheater, and An-na says that yes, he does. Hoon is fed up with her demanding ways and wants to break up, screaming that he won’t put up with being treated this way. Good for him — that was long overdue, if you ask me.

Hoon storms out of the store but An-na follows him, yelling that he shouldn’t walk away from her that way. She tells him to come back or else, but Hoon keeps going, and An-na calls out that she knew something was going on with him. That does stop him and he wonders what she meant by that, but when he turns around she’s already gone.

Do-kyung goes out to record some sound, and he stares at his phone, but in the end he doesn’t call Hae-young. He finally sends a simple text, “I’m sorry,” which Hae-young glares at for a long time as she sits at a cafe, inexplicably dressed in a skimpy skirt with way too much makeup on.

She finally calls to say that she’s disappointed he didn’t say anything else, and asks if he’s gone insane. He asks where she is and comes to find her, to say that he’s sorry to her face.

Hae-young’s eyes are cold and she’s not inclined to accept his apology, and when he tries to take her somewhere to talk, she asks if he’s embarrassed to be seen with her in public (because of the way she’s dressed). She admits that she feels gullible and stupid to have let herself be caught in the middle of his love spat, so she wanted to look like someone else. And all he can say is he’s sorry?

Do-kyung says he’s very sorry, and Hae-young laughs ruefully. She wants to know why he’s sorry, and for what, and why he didn’t tell her sooner. Do-kyung replies that he wanted to, but he didn’t want to hurt her even more when she was already in pain.

But Hae-young says that the worst part is that he still loved the other Hae-young so recently that he wanted to break up her wedding. Once again, the rock meant for the other Hae-young hit our Hae-young instead. He let things go so far that she even confessed her feelings to him, not knowing how much he still loved the other Hae-young.

She spits that he should have told her the moment he knew she had feelings for her, so she could have walked away sooner. Do-kyung can only say he’s sorry again — he doesn’t know what else to say. His voice rises and he notices that they’re drawing a crowd, and he says again that he’s very, very sorry.

Hae-young in response, “Beg. Beg on your knees.” But Do-kyung can’t, and he turns away. Hae-young screams at his back, “Come back and beg!!” but he doesn’t stop.

Do-kyung doesn’t get far before he stops and goes back, like he always does when Hae-young is concerned. He turns back away, then stops again, seeming upset that she didn’t follow him. Finally, he walks away. Hae-young staggers around aimlessly, thinking to herself that he never got the chance to say he loved her, and it hurts to know that he said those words to the other Hae-young.

The other Hae-young is currently having lunch with Chairman Jang, who says that it would be strange to keep spending time with her once he marries Do-kyung’s mother. He draws a line, admitting that he’s being harsh, but he asks her not to call him anymore, and tells her to end her feelings for Do-kyung.

Their lunch is interrupted by Tae-jin, who wants to talk to Chairman Jang. He has to remind the chairman who he is, and tells him that Do-kyung asked him to cancel his investment because he was after Tae-jin’s fiancee. He makes a veiled threat that it would be bad for Chairman Jang if word got out that he helped such a thing happen. The other Hae-young is stunned by Tae-jin’s story, and cries on the way home.

That night, Jin-sang wonders why Do-kyung didn’t just get on his knees when Hae-young told him to, even demonstrating how easy it is. He’s shocked Do-kyung didn’t do it when just yesterday he looked like he’d do anything to get Hae-young back, but Do-kyung just mutters that he said he was sorry a million times. Jin-sang counters that he should have gotten on his knees and said he loved her: “Are you sure you like her?”

Do-kyung thinks it’s obvious, but Jin-sang rightly points out that he wouldn’t know unless Do-kyung says so. He asks why Do-kyung can’t just give a straight answer (preach, friend) and sighs that Do-kyung isn’t capable of letting Hae-young in.

Jin-sang and Do-kyung both roll their eyes when the other Hae-young approaches them. Jin-sang leaves and Hae-young tells Do-kyung that when she left him, she was heartbroken that he never once even emailed her, even to say he hated her. To her it felt like their breakup meant nothing to him.

She says that she knows what he did to Tae-jin because he thought she was marrying him, and actually thanks him. Now she knows that he did hurt when she left him. But her words infuriate Do-kyung, who ruined someone’s life because of her, but Hae-young actually says that she doesn’t care, since he did it because he loved her.

She starts to cry, and tells Do-kyung, “I still love you. I love you so, so much.” She moves to take his hand and Do-kyung recoils, and leaves after shooting her a look of disgust.

Tae-jin spends the night sitting in his car by the Han River, remembering his interruption of Chairman Jang’s lunch with the other Hae-young. She’d quickly gotten up and left, and the chairman had told him that her name was Oh Hae-young, and that she’d been engaged to Do-kyung.

He remembers our Hae-young saying, “It wasn’t me,” and he finally puts the pieces together himself. He laughs at the absurdity of his life being ruined over a case of mistaken identity, and his unhinged laughter turns to agonized screams.

Do-kyung goes for a walk and finds himself on a street corner, looking at himself on the other side of the intersection. Vision Do-kyung just stands there, unmoving and unemotional, while a car smashes into him.

It’s hard to say if it’s a memory or a vision, but next we see Do-kyung in Dr. Park’s office, and he calmly gazes out the window as he says, “With that woman, I think it’s right to end it this way.” Then he’s lying in the street, bleeding and broken, then back in the office and he repeats his words: “I think it’s right to end it this way. For her. I will die anyway.”

COMMENTS

Okay Show, you’re genuinely scaring me now. I love how the show is doling out information so slowly regarding Do-kyung’s visions and what they mean, but I’m really starting to get frightened that Do-kyung could actually die. There’s this shivery feeling of something big, and dark, and ugly getting closer and closer, and it’s scaring me to death even as I’m impressed with the execution of the sensation of impending doom. I still hold out hope that the death vision is just a warning of some kind, based on the pattern of blood on Do-kyung’s face matching the blood on his father’s face when he died. But I’m starting worry that I’m wrong.

Aside from that, WOW, I’m floored by how self-centered the other Hae-young was in this episode. I can understand that she’s relieved to know that Do-kyung did care about her, but to say that she doesn’t care whose life he ruined as long as she knows he loved her? Is she even serious?? She doesn’t even realize in that moment that Do-kyung is in serious pain, and that saying that to him right then is like twisting the knife. All she cares about is that, after she left him, and after she crushed all of his dreams and broke his heart, at least now she knows he was hurting. I knew she was self-absorbed and spoiled, but that just takes the cake. She doesn’t even care that he and two other people are in extreme pain right now, their lives and hearts in tatters and that it was all set off by her leaving Do-kyung without a word of explanation, so long as she knows Do-kyung was hurt when she left. What a bitch.

I’m trying very hard not to be a Do-kyung apologist, because I very much think he did wrong to harm Tae-jin’s business, no matter what his reason. But I do believe that it was never his goal to completely ruin Tae-jin’s business and send him to jail and make him cancel his wedding — I think Do-kyung only meant for one investor to pull out and make things difficult for Tae-jin. His intent wasn’t complete ruin, just inconvenience. So I find it hard to completely condemn Do-kyung, because while what he did was absolutely wrong, something Tae-jin was doing was shady enough that it snowballed on him. Most of what happened to Tae-jin was because of his own immoral business practices, and I didn’t miss that glimmer of malevolence when he threatened Chairman Jang. There’s definitely more to Tae-jin’s story.

It was interesting to me when Hae-young thought that if Do-kyung had told her the truth sooner, she could have accepted it, because while I completely agree that he should have been honest with her sooner, I also understand why he wasn’t. He’s been trying so hard not to fall in love with Hae-young that he never really thought it would matter when he told her, because either way she would probably cut off contact with him. So if telling her meant losing her, and he was trying so very hard not to fall for her, it really made no difference when he told her. But then he went and fell in love, and decided that he did want to be with her. In his defense, he was going to tell her right away, but it was his bad luck that Tae-jin got there first.

He made a mistake, no argument there. But it wasn’t Do-kyung’s fault that everything blew up for Tae-jin the way it did, and I do think Do-kyung felt terrible when he realized his mistake, and the extent of what happened to Tae-jin was a complete surprise to him. Because he felt guilty about it, he tried to mitigate the damage by having Jin-sang help get Tae-jin out of jail as soon as he could. And the very day he decided that he wanted to make a go of things with Hae-young, he intended to tell her everything. So for those reasons, I’m not seeing Do-kyung as a terrible person.

As for our Hae-young, I find it fascinating that she immediately blamed the other Hae-young when she found out the truth of what Do-kyung did to Tae-jin, causing him to cancel their wedding. On the one hand, it’s not like the other Hae-young did anything intentional to hurt our Hae-young, she was just living her life and a mistake was made. But on the other hand, hasn’t that always been the case? The other Hae-young has never intentionally or directly done any harm to our Hae-young, but yet her life has been profoundly impacted in very negative ways just by the fact of the other Hae-young’s very existence. So while I don’t think our Hae-young was right to attack the other Hae-young, I can see how she just finally snapped when she learned that once again, just by sharing the same name, her life was irrevocably altered. So it makes sense that she’s not so much angry at what Do-kyung did, but the fact that she got hurt again by being mistaken for the other Hae-young. I can’t blame her for feeling like she gets all the bad luck, and now it’s happening again, just when she thought she’d finally moved past that part of her life.

I feel you. But I also like that Do-kyung was planning on telling the truth pretty much right after their blissful beach day together. Obviously, having him plan on doing that meant that they had to make that inevitable fight happen super quickly.

I also think this angst is necessary for the moments to become truly lovey dovey. Next week will bring a lot more happiness I hope....

Yea truth is he did plan on telling her soon, just that Tae Jin also found out too soon. However I also like that the plot is moving fast. Imagine if all we got was several episodes of filled up fluff, and we're all just squeaming at how he's continuously lying to her.

... The writer/director does the rom-com part so well even in a largely depressing episode. The adorable hug in the beginning, the duckling walk, the crazy sister - all so so good

Fingers crossed for better times

Though I suspect HY will put DK through the ringer a lil more first.

Hope they don't make 13-14 happy so they can have us be crushed by car crash angst 15-18 :(

I know what you mean! My jaw dropped at seeing how selfish she is. It's all about her and her feeling relieved. Normally I don't approve of one woman attacking another woman over a man, but in this case I wanted our Hae-young to rip out the other Hae-young's eyeballs. The other Hae-young is truly a b**ch. I'm ready for Soo-kyung to use some of her moves on the other Hae-young; she has it coming. Also I never thought about Tae-jin's business practices being shady but that would make sense and that's why everything came tumbling down (unless Chairman Jang is just so influential that when he pulled out the other investors got scared). But Tae-jin should have just told Hae-young the truth and let her decide to stay or go. (I was quite impressed with Lee Jae-yoon in this episode; you could feel his rage coming off the screen. And why does he give me Choi Jin-hyuk vibes?) But all-in-all I feel for our Hae-young. People around her keep making decisions for her and creating havoc in her life. They keep deciding for her what she should know and when she should know it. I just want everyone to take a hike and give the girl some time to breathe. (Her parents can stay of course since they are awesome.)

The attack was never about DK or TJ. That whole mess was Our Hae Young unleashing years of resentment and pain in one burning flash. If she had been in her right state of mind I doubt she would have attacked Bit Na (this shall henceforth be her name for this episode).

I understand why people are mad at other OHY, but I can also see where she's coming from. Despite her smiles and "everything is OK" attitude, she is also very hurt. It's not like she wanted to call off the wedding. Were her actions after she left wrong? Yes. She probably didn't think about that Paris picture posting on social media the day of her wedding and how Do Kyung would interpret that. She probably wanted him to reach out to her. She is relieved that all the hurt she felt was not for nothing and that he did love her. Honestly, I feel like I could see our OHY saying something similar in the heat of her emotions.

I want to hug her, on the contrary. I don't know, but I sort of understand her. I also get selfish when I'm in love. It makes me care less for what other people have to say. All that matters are my feelings. It's not kind or the right thing to do, I know, but for me, it's a genuine thing. When I love someone so bad, I could even make god my enemy.

Aaaah, this is such a great show. Yes, they did crush our hearts immediately after that brief glimpse of happiness, but they balanced the angst with heartwarming friendship that put a huge smile on my face (never let us forget the genius of "Just like the wave that comes and goes, women come and go too.").
I am so grateful for the extension right now because if I had to think that it would all end in 2 more weeks, I would start getting withdrawal symptoms.
On a side note, has anyone noticed a difference between Mon and Tue episodes? I dunno, but it seems to me like the Monday episodes have less events/conversations, but are more intense and densely-packed. In comparison, Tuesdays seem more broken down into smaller sections, more diffused somehow?
P.S. How pretty was that angry rose petals shower?

I might get a lot of hate for saying this, spare me this is not a hate comment
but isn't AOHY reminds you of Weekend drama with better acting and directing?
(my mom love weekend drama/telenovela too so I watched it a lot and I always feel this show familiar in some way, I just can't point it out until I remember OHY always crying, the car break sequence and the loving you more speech)
AOHY it looks better but the deppressing stage and the anger management really reminds of weekend makjang drama.
Weekend drama is long because they deal with the whole family love stories but this series, the all wrong intention, jealousy, violence , drinking, mother in law and the character description is just another weekend drama character that fleshed out to be contradictory.

Weekend drama like to make antagonist clear and make the wrong pairing when they run out of the time, but AOHY plot and their rage feels so similar with lots of weekend drama minus the vision and relatively younger age cast.
Especially drama after temptation of wife..

Well, something I'm realizing is that the characters of Oh Hae Young and Park Do Kyung are like extreme representations of these conflicting aspects of myself.

OHY = the part of me that wants to shamelessly give 100% of myself to everything and to do so while cutting through all the BS, even though doing so can feel akin to putting myself on a dart board. PDK= the part of me that can only put out out 50% and less and less, the more paralyzed with fear I become until I'm at 0%. Fear of loss, fear of failure & pain, and fear of no acceptance and no control. And, yes, even guilt. In my case, I've come to accept the guilt was misplaced but I still retreated from a relationship once because I couldn't handle how sorry I felt. I've become like both these characters at certain points in my life and, often, I've found these two aspects cause the other IF you can't strike a balance between them.

These characters are extremes, but they pose such universal questions. How much can I give of myself to the world? And how much do I protect myself? This is why this couple has come to represent something beyond the romantic to me. No matter how dysfunctional they are, I can't help but want them to find that balance with each other, even if I know that they need to find it within themselves first.

Someone made a common early on disparaging the show and detailing that it was filled with to many tropes. My argument against that was how genuinely well grounded all the characters are in real emotion/motivation. Despite the checklist writer-nim, the PD, director and actors have created a show where everything is just perfectly subverted by being real.

I know everyone is saying things are crazy, but that's not what's drawing me to this show at all at this point. I'm not bored for a second with any part of the show and am enjoying the entire thing, but I am completely fascinated by Do Kyung and Soo Kyung.

It's clear that their father's death and their mother's selfish, narcissistic, poisonous insanity shaped them both in ways that keep unfolding. We all knew that Do Kyung was introverted and stoic, but it really took 10 episodes of watching him handle ups and downs to appreciate the way he reacts in this episode (and to realize why heart-on-her-sleeve Hae Young is utterly perfect for him, and in fact needed by him). Soo Kyung is very like him internally, they've just presented very different faces to the world.

I enjoy the more dramatic bits of the show, but the character moments are adding depth that makes the entire thing much more special.

finally, catch up...

tbh what do kyung didn't said when they made the relationship is similar to what tae jin didn't said before off the marriage, in term of relationship.
The I don't tell you my business ruined and I don't tell you I knew your ex-fiancee pretty much weigh the same IMO because it made her look like a fool alone (in term of relationship).
They both didn't tell her what actually make the circumstances changes in their relationship. The trust issue, I feel bad for OHY since in her view, no one really want to share that information so she can choose her stand but rather make her believe in fictional short term happiness when TJ and DK knew they will break it off/there's the big change coming (objectively DK has longer time than TJ so ...)

Then the begging thing, I do agree with OHY (if you looked at her PoV) since it looks likes she pretty much wants to give all of herself to him if he can do that much (loving all the way out to differentiate it with her love with tae jin before), but I also understand why not a lot of people will do it including Do Kyung, he thinks it isn't his fault (the relationship), which is true, it just what she wants and what he wants ATM is completely different thing.

I think OHY is a needy type of person (not in a bad way, I just forget another term) and she needs a giver type for a companion.

TJ break down on car really hits me, I hope he has his moment.

I look at it in this way. Our Hae Young is someone who gives to much in a relationship while DK is someone who doesn't give much at all. They both measure things differently. What is a mile to DK is an inch to HY.

I almost feel like the trust issue was the basis for what was off about TJ relationship with Our Hae Young. It wsn't just the breakup. The idea that he (TJ) couldn't be someone she trusted enough to open up to meant that they both had fairly distorted views of each other. It makes me wonder if maybe TJ attraction to Our Hae Young right now is more misplaced anger and an attempt to regain control over his life rather then genuine love. I must get my life (Our Hae young being stand in for that) back kind of thing?

Good question actually does TJ want OHY back because he genuinely feels for her, or does she symbolize normality in life for him. I think in the beginning TJ still loved OHY.
However it can also be mixed with guilt for breaking their engagement even if he believes his reasons. Now it can be different though after finding out the truth, I think his perception and feelings are being muddled with hate and revenge.

DK doesn't give much at all? Are we watching the same show? He has been taking care of her in many different ways, many small things, without bragging about it, but always thinking of how to soothe her and protect her. And whenever he thought she was in a bad situation he ran to her, to confort, bring her home, tell her the exact words that would make her feel better.
Although he cannot express his feelings with words, his actions speak of themselves. Although we all love to hear words of love and it's exasperating not to get them, if I had to choose between one who talks about loving me and one who shows it with his every action, I would of course choose the latter.

I think a huge part of why Do-kyung's behaviour really bothers me is how it echoes what Tae-jin did to her - he put his pride ahead of her, and ahead of their relationship.

I might have even understood if he confessed that he'd withheld the truth because he really was falling for her and was afraid of losing her (and our Hae-young seems to think the same, since on her walk back she specifically noted how he's never even told her he loves her), but Do-kyung's closed off and retreated and really not into communicating with her when she demands answers, or expects honesty.

Required fields are marked *

"DK did not tell because he was falling for her" explains his behavior only for the time when he started to develop feelings for her. Before that he had many encounters with her as a random person. And she somehow told this random stranger that she is dumped on her wedding day. Well, if it was me, I would tell her that instant. What was to loose at that moment? He could have told her that he knows his fiancee (and her, indirectly) from business, and heard that he ended up in jail. That is not a full disclosure, but it is enough to make HY's pain end and maybe save their relationship. But then, there would not be any drama, right?

In an earlier ep, I believe DK said something to the effect of: his ex-OHY had mentioned there was another girl with the same name at her hs who was quite dull (plain?). [I remember thinking, she's not! She sparkles!!!] ... So, that means that he *had* knowledge of two HYs, but that was conveniently forgotten and his pent-up rage over-colored his revengy senses, to the point that he tried to ruin a man's life? Does this make his actions more or less of a "mistake"?

As for TJ, the more I see him, the more delusional he seems. I mean, roses and a ring? Who does he think he is? Does he think our HY will just take him back as if the past 6-7 months never happened? Even if she forgives him, which he seems to expect for some wild reason, forgiveness is not love, nor does it necessarily lead to love, again.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Thank you for reminding me that DK did not want to catalyze her inferiority complex by revealing the truth. But still, I think having one more pain because of other OHY was much less of an issue for her comparing what she felt being dumped on her wedding day.

Remember when OHY first told DK that she was dumped on her wedding day:

OHY: I got dumped on my wedding day :((
DK: I know.
OHY: Ottoke arasso???
DK: I know your fiancée from business, and saw you two once before. And he did not dump you. I heard that they put him jail.
OHY: Whaa? But why?
DK: Dunno. Ask him.
OHY: *runs to visit the inmate*

*black screen, closing credits appear on the screen*

I guess that is why I can never be a writer.

@pogo, I just don't think Do Kyung talks. I think we've gotten a false impression of how communicative he is because OHY is a ninja at interpreting his expressions and the little that he DOES say, but his instinct is not at all to talk/explain.

Look at his relationship with his mom: she's relentless. If he talks to her, all she does is use what he says to further manipulate him. So he tries to not only avoid her calls, but not talk to her when she's right in front of him. He isn't a particularly communicative guy at home either, he's the audience to a much more explosive group. And of course his entire career is based on listening.

Do Kyung feels very deeply, but is the last person on earth to either kick off a conversation or start something that's going to involve a lot of talking.

A big theme in this drama has been the connection between love, embarrassment, and pride. OHY is someone who is not afraid to give all of herself to someone even if it means throwing away her pride and being embarrassed. Tae Jin couldn't put away his pride/embarrassment enough to tell her the truth and ask her to stay by him while he went to jail. Both DK and other OHY failed at their relationship because they couldn't open themselves up to the other to see the real them flaws and all.

I think the importance of him kneeling in front of her was to show that if he loved her enough he wouldn't care about his pride and the crowd of people around them. But he couldn't do it. Even his friend commented that when you let yourself go and are crazy in love, those things don't matter.

One part of me did think what if DK possibly felt that even if he kneeled and begged her, she still wouldn't forgive him, then what? In his view he's apologized so much he doesn't even know what to say or do anymore. Knowing how stubbourn OHY is, would doing as she asks really satisfy her? With her current mood filled with anger and hate I have a feeling DK begging her to have him back wouldn't satisfy her at all. In fact it might go against his character.

I've been dying for this recap. This series is SO GOOD.

I think it was right for him to not kneel/beg. At that point, she had no intention of listening to whatever he was saying. I think if he had kneeled, she would have left him there in order to see him suffer. Seeing him kneel probably wouldn't even had made her feel better in the long run, because seeing someone you love being put in a shameful situation hurts you just as much as it hurts them. She was blinded by the hurt and pain that he caused her (rightfully so, since our OHY1 is beautifully human), but she made that request with the sole purpose to hurt him. If he had followed through and they had reconciled through that, it would be through a means that was meant to permanently damage his pride and her respect towards him, and I think that would hinder their relationship, not help it. Of course, walking away was not the right solution either... She really just wanted to hear him say that he loved her. But he didn't know that, and she couldn't ask him.

Also, OHY2 is a selfish cold hearted BLEARGH.

i thought it was less that he COULDNT but that he wouldnt because he felt breaking up with her was the "right" thing to do. i expect that's also an excuse for him. dude wants to love and be loved but he's really shuttered up inside so even when he finally opened up, as soon as shit hit the fan with his past actions. he immediately shut down again. and then justified it with "i dont deserve the girl, thsi si for the best, she'll be better off without me" except she consistently makes it clear that NO she wont be. which isnt to say she'd die without him but that his way of thinking is flawed af and he needs to reexamine. esp since HY's biggest insecurity is not being Good Enough or precious enough. like he STILL hasnt cleared up for her what we the audience know, that he has no feelings for other OHY anymore, hasnt for a while, and none of what happened between them emotionally had much to do with her at all.

i suspect him stringing that many words together to explain all of that, might be difficult for him since he's so withholding and quiet most of the time. but if not in words try then with gestures! it was very half hearted how he dealt with our OHY this episode and its so clearly cause he was in conflict with himself and again instead of opening up, just completely shut down instead and try to cut n run.

im so glad for the reveal that was in ep 12. i wont go into it here but, basically, it removes any more outside factors to use as an excuse to prevent his relationship with OHY. now its rly down to himself (and her if she's willing to try with him again after all his shenanigans). if he would just realize how much she'd be willing to forgive or understand if he just made it clear how sincerely he loved her. alot of heartache could be prevented!

I don't think that OHY1 wanted him kneeling as much as his love confession. But since he is not even saying I love you at least he should kneel. But he didn't do any of those and I kept screaming at the screen that before the first kiss she told you how TJ's pride was more important than OHY1, Hoon told him that being embarrassed is living life. But the main problem with DK is that he has lived inside a wall for so long that he doesn't even understands his needs and feelings let alone understanding OHY1's.

The bit about DK not apologising because he had premonitions of his death, did occur to me too. Until i remembered that at the beginning of the ep, DK had made up his mind to go all the way with our OHY. Regardless of seeing his own death. I thus do not understand him failing to go to her or continuing to be with her. And when he still refuses her plea for them to be together when they were in her room, that was when i felt like planting an axe in the middle of his forehead. Our OHY was right, he is the cruelest man in the world. To her. ?

he totally freaked out and used that as an excuse imo. but without perhaps fully realizing taht'ss what he's doing. he's so cut off from himself emotionally half the time. he probably really thought he IS doing the right thing but lol ofc he's not. which our OHY continues to make clear in this and the next episode. he was prepared to go All the Way before he was suddenly faced again with his past actions (and past self) and then suddenly he was overcome with guilt and self loathing again. and bam he shuts down again. leaving our poor OHY to shout at a brick wall.
he seemed to have another epiphany at the end of ep 12 too, so i wonder how many of these he wil have before he can love like a proper human haha. i cant hate him tho. i do hope our OHY makes him crawl thru the mud a bit before finally forgiving him tho.

The key to it all is the idea of opening yourself up to someone else enough to be honest with them. This is something I've said before but I felt feel like the trust issue was the basis for what was off about TJ relationship with Our Hae Young. It wasn't just the breakup. The idea that he (TJ) couldn’t be someone she trusted enough to open up to meant that they both had fairly distorted views of each other. It makes me wonder if maybe TJ attraction to Our Hae Young right now is more misplaced anger and an attempt to regain control over his life rather then genuine love. I must get my life (Our Hae young being stand in for that) back kind of thing?

In DK's case though it felt like for him it was more painful to him because of his fear of loss. He is certainly embarrassed and guilty. However I think fear is the ultimate motivator for his closed off behavior. He cannot let go of his fear of losing people or his fear of pain (either hurting someone or being hurt himself). What we know about his mom, dad, siblings and relationships in general paint a picture of someone so invested in not being invested (his dads quote misinterpreted as a philosophy of not caring) that when confronted with Our Hae Young he freezes up. I look at him and I see someone paralyzed by fear.

Well said, @Oshi, very well said. He is completely immobilized by fear. I see him as so deeply vulnerable and with a huge heart - a heart so big that his friends, siblings, co-workers and girlfriends see it clearly emblazoned on his chest and therefore are devoted to him. Only DK doesn't see it - or he feels it and is death afraid of it. I've gone through this same kind of emotional stunting in my life until the power of love broke me wide open. "'I Love you' is always the right thing to say...the phrase that should be repeated endlessly...NOT "I'm sorry".

Oh. my. God. How I love this drama!

I think Do Kyung is someone who feels things very, very deeply, but who has learned through long and painful experience that opening himself up emotionally just ends up hurting him.

He lost his father in the most hideous way, his mother's a narcissistic grifter, he gained and lost a stepfamily, his fiancee vanished. Weirdly I find the stepfamily most compelling - that was wonderfully paced, the revelation that Hoon is his ex-stepbrother, because on one hand Do Kyung doesn't seem like the type of person to maintain that relationship but not only does he maintain it, he's actively trying to take a mentor's role in his life. And giving him a place to live. It puts an entirely different spin on the idea that Do Kyung is cold to Hoon because he's an unwanted younger brother - no, this is Do Kyung when he actually WANTS you around.

The man doesn't talk. OHY has been doing much of the talking for him, and interpreting many of his expressions and silences correctly, to the extent that I think it seems like he's said a lot more than he actually has. With that line of interpretation broken down, DK suddenly comes across as a block of ice.

Do Kyung doesn't put much worth in words. Which is now a problem because he really, really needs to tell her something.

"I won’t push you away anymore out of guilt. I just want to love you. No matter what I tell you, please don’t abandon me. Please hold onto me tightly."

- I've spent so much time thinking about what happened to his resolve here. But I ultimately think a part of it comes down to Do-kyung not being in control of the situation anymore. I think, when situations & conflicts slip out of his control, he becomes paralyzed with fear, fear of losing, fear of pain & guilt. It's a stark contrast to the boy who rallied to save his father's life, even in his fear, but when you consider that he failed at that time it makes more sense that he would be so afraid to actually fight for this doomed relationship. Professing your love, when you're directly looking at all the pain you caused someone...it's hard because you don't feel like you have a right.

The whole point, though, is that Hae-young wanted Do-kyung to love her even though he knows he doesn't have a right to. She wanted his emotions for her to be so overpowering that the guilt didn't keep him from saying the things she really wanted to hear. But he cares so much about the pain he caused her that he can't seem to move past it and realize what he really needs to express.

What still baffles me is how Tae Jin still thinks Do Kyung 'stole' his woman? Like seriously! What are we living in? This isn't the stone age? She isn't some property that can be taken from you. Hae Young is a strong, vibrant, intelligent, warm and loving woman. She's a person with her hopes and dreams and desires and wants. She is not a property to be exchanged or 'stolen' from you. She chose Do Kyung! She chose him! He didn't steal her. She chose him. Which means even when all this mess goes down, she will still not choose you. She chose someone else.

I can't even! Argh! As for other Hae Young, that girl deserves what the Nigerian parent would call an Ifoti or as we all know it, the auto reset slap. There's something loose in her head. She needs to fix it. Stat!

My problem is not with the whole drama that led to him losing Hae Young. Sure he made mistakes but I kind of pity him. My problem is with the use of the word 'steal'. It makes it seem like Hae Young doesn't have her own mind and she's just there, passively waiting to be taken. I consider the choice of that word to be an insult to the person Hae Young is.

He thought, DK planned to send him to jail so DK could steal her in meaning grab her at the lowest moment, console her and remove him.

I think steal mean take away someone attention, slowly integrate himself into her life and act nice to make her like him while crushing the rival on her back.

I don't think you need to take that 1 word in literal meaning to said that he saw her as things. That kinda reaching.

Hit the nail on the head. TJ and his issues stem more form his thwarted ambitions/jail time then any pure love for Our Hae Young. It's not so much that he doesn't love Our Hae young as that isn't the primary motivator for his wanting her back. He sees her more as the path to reclaiming "his" life. Whatever he suffered in jail will all disappear if I just have something (her) back. It's a fairly classic fixation post trauma.

Exactly! That's why TJ & OHY need their proper closure. Both of them but I'm afraid that's not going to happen anytime soon because what's been revealed in episode no. 12. He's going to be use as a pawn and I hate that.

0

Except he was still asking that jail visitor a couple eps back if OHY was doing well.

So he was concerned for her even while he was in jail. Even before he knew he could get out early.

It's not just a fixation with getting his life back. He really loves her, stupid noble idiot that he was.

0

I think he was under the impression that Do-kyung was putting the moves on our Hae-young before he went to jail, and that that was the reason for that request to his stepdad. But Tae-jin was the one who chose to break it off with our Hae-young after that (and no one forced him to do THAT).

and yeah, other Hae-young really has a screw loose if she thinks Do-kyung accidentally ruining someone because he was furious at her, is some sign that he still loves her. I think Do-kyung said it for all of us - wtf is wrong with her?! I feel bad for her, but girl is seriously self-centred.

Tae Jin didn't really know the context of the whole situation until the very end of the episode though.

I mean, from his perspective, it looked like DK purposefully put him in jail so he could bang his girl while he was locked away. That's effed up.

Required fields are marked *

That really annoyed me as well.

Apart from the fact that Tae-jin is violent (even this is the second time that he's happy to engage in a fight and does so without holding back), he's really possessive. They already broke up and yet he ignores what OHY asks of him on the phone, waltzes in with roses and ring (!!!) and then acts as if HY is his – not even like a girlfriend, but his "property".

Never mind that I still find there's a gap between losing an investor in your business and going to jail. The drama needs to explain this, otherwise I'm going to continue thinking TJ isn't this 'innocent' person that we should just feels sorry for (which I wouldn't 100% anyhow. It was his own decision to dump OHY and give her no choice in the matter – again, a sign of his seeing her as a 'property' rather than an equal person).

It was explained in the show. One investor pulled out and so did the rest because chairman Jang is important in the business world. They probably thought it was a failed venture.

What upsets it's the love everyone has for pdk that they apologize his every move. Yes he didn't mean to ruin him completely but come on, the only reason he tried to help him get out of jail is because he found out it was the wrong girl.

The show has given us NO evidence at this point that Tae-jin is a shady character. So far, all we've seen is that he had a business and then got thrown in jail because an influential investor pulled out of the business (which...I guess gets you thrown in jail in Korea? o_O). It's weird to me that everyone has concluded hook, line & sinker that Tae-jin must be a shady businessman when the show has given us NO indication that that is the case.

This show is hitting all the sweet spots. I was squealing/laughing/cringing along with the characters, hallmark of great writing. I'm really pleased at how they allowed everything to play out. I'm satisfied at how things turned out just as effed up as I thought it would, oddly enough. I was worried that Do Kyung would be let off easy, or Tae Jin would get the worse end of the stick, so I'm pleased that this turned out pretty realistic.

HAHA at LollyPip's comment toward Other! Her reaction was disgusting, but I do see that that is in line with her character. She never seemed to realize how others suffer because of her, and I think she'd always written Our OHY off as just jealous of her in some way. So I'm glad PDK got to see how selfish she was underneath the gracious facade.

Honestly, I wish Tae Jin would get some sort of closure. I feel for him the most. I really appreciated how he was never once fazed by Other's beauty, never even really looking/taking an interest in her until Chairman Jang said she was once engaged to DK. Our OHY has always been insecure next to Other, and I think TJ was honestly good for her if she just allowed herself to let go and truly be herself around him.

Thought the little duckling walk of PDK's coworkers was adorable! And I agree with one of the previous commenters, this show is turning into a melo, not romcom. I wonder how the writers are going to resolve it all while not letting it sink into a deeper level of tragedy.

Q: How is everyone feeling about Our OHY's pettiness and outbursts of anger? In the first 10 eps I was really sympathetic and could see myself making the snide remarks she was jokingly making, but in this episode, things have become Really Bad, and I found myself horrified at her actions (attacking Other, making a scene with blue eyeshadow). She has lost it, and I found myself a little disturbed at her violence.

Anyway, if this role doesn't bring leading roles to Lee Jae Yoon, I don't know what will.

she let it all out but I don't think that attitude is fit to all scene.

I read a comment elsewhere before that said OHY feel like stacking her mistreatment and always judge other the past treatment when it all doesn't seem like that.

she can't let go of her past to always be compared to the pretty one when I don't think that's actually the matter in some problem she has, she needs to fic that.

I think I've seen Tj.Lee jae yoon before but I only notice him now,

I agree that she's always been prone to outbursts but this is different... It's one thing to be dramatic, but another to be violent. It might be because this whole dam of bitterness and hurt just exploded? I've always thought she was strong in her identity and self-esteem, but I'm starting to think otherwise... Excited to see how the writers continue to tease this out.

Yup, I am similarly disturbed re: OHY (as I have answered ....... using too many words ........ below). She's victimising herself.

I remember the first time my psychologist drew a simple triangle, and described that there is always a perpetrator, victim, and a witness, and asked me who I was. It hit me I couldn't always be a victim.

It's not that I don't sympathise, but victims can very easily become perpetrators.

I agree with you. At first, it feels like she is a victim. But now, she is victimising herself. There are also some things that she did on Episode 12 that makes me feel uncomfortable with her, but I'm not going to say what they are.

Bottom line is, I hope they will at least show her getting some advice by the end of the drama from professionals about the struggles that she's going through, her feelings etc.

Required fields are marked *

That is a nice way to put it @kit. although we can't really blame her for it, it must be difficult to grow up being mistaken by someone else, got bullied and everything. but yes, she does victimise herself. i want to say she should build some self-confidence and think positively, but after being dumped a day before her wedding and have to go thought the exact same thing in her work-place, might be a bit unfair.

as for the anger management issue, the first fight that taejin and do kyung had really was because dokyung agitated taejin's anger. and our hae young's anger...well gets back to her long emotional issue and history of being 'the other' her entire life.and now being 'that other' has cost her relationships.

yes, i feel sooooo much for tae jin right now. his life was completely ruined. someone commented in a prior episode that if this was a different drama, we'd be rooting for tae jin instead.

my opinion dump on the question: (this response is not very well organized hence the dump)

i also agree about our OHY's behavior. she's emotionally driven so how she is feeling will somehow manifest itself externally. true to her character we see this in the change of clothes and the make up, which is not exactly out of the ordinary in reality when relationships go awry (think cutting hair, makeovers, etc). while i understand that it's okay to be emotionally driven, i've also been thinking counseling as well because the extent to which she despises other ohy runs pretty deep. i'm not sure if i'd call it petty because she's been on the receiving end of all this bad stuff for so long that it's been long overdue for some kind of outburst but my hope was that it would be directed accordingly. if anyone is to blame, it's do kyung (and other suitors in the past). he really needed to be on the receiving end. other OHY can't really be blamed--even though we might really want to blame her because it follows along with the visions and the idea of how things are set in motion--when it's the fault of stupid, confused suitors. our OHY still has some growing up to do. let's hope that this is something that happens in the remaining episodes. at least i'd really like this to happen so i can continue to keep our OHY in high esteem.

Required fields are marked *

I made a comment earlier but my read of it is that this kind of behavior is atypical. The outburst/pettiness seems to have started to boil over post wedding fiasco. She is drunk, belligerent and otherwise self destructive. I remember how early in the series her co-workers/mom/friend all commented with throwaway lines that she wasn't herself. These people know her best and they are shocked at her. I haven't given her a pass on her behavior but I've bee seeing it from the lens of she is in extreme unstable state. It's why all the comments about how weird a time it is for her to meet DK have resonated for me. She needs some serious head shrinking and instead she gets more trauma. Poor Our Hae Young....

I've written off that bitch Bit Na....

I was waiting for your recap simply because i know you will sort out how we all feel about this episode nicely. Just like you i hesitant to watch episode 11 ( and 12) because it's too dark, too emotional and really nerve wrecking because Do Kyung talking about his own death now, plain and simple without telling Hae Young. I like it that DK and HY didnt talk about this for while and let the pain absorb so they know where they stand on. Also i think DK take his death presupposition as a punishment he deserve. I am no deep thinker, but i believe this will be a happy ending, tho sad ending is a thing in kdrama. I really have to hope for this or i will weep like crazy.

Anyway, DK premonition seeing himself got crash is really mind numbing. Scare the crap out of me.

Also it was totally adorable when OHY turns around and comes back down the stairs at him. Do Kyung's vision told him it would happen, but I don't think the vision went all the way to her jumping into his arms, and the way his entire expression beams in the split-second before she pounces on him is lovely.

Not to mention his little crane to look up her stairs as he's headed into his house, like he's just checking in case she might come back to hug him again.

All hell break loose and it's just so ugly sometimes I couldn't bear to look closely at what happened on screen. I wonder if Dokyung's future self choose to let Haeyoung go back to her ex-fiance and that become his biggest regret when he is dying. Maybe that massive regret manifest itself into vision he now experience to ensure his past self to choose the other way, to hold tight onto Haeyoung and find his happiness. And I just love Sookyung and her way to protect our Haeyoung. I really loved seeing the trail of friend, brother, and work colleagues behind Do Kyung. I thought it was a really powerful and moving image, and sweetly peppered with humour.

But generally, Episode 11 made me uncomfortable. Until now, there had been a sense of glorifying 'our' Oh Hae Young because she communicated, did not fear social repercussions, and did what she wanted. Such an extreme reminded me of radical groups, like feminists who would like to step on men to get ahead, because 'they've done the same to us for centuries’, for this method of retaliation and pain is terribly unhealthy. This is not to say Noh Hae Young's method is any better - I actually had to step back from my screen when she was all 'Thank God you ruined a man - and thus his fiancee's - life because it proves you love me!', that was crazy disturbing. And it was emphasised in this episode.

There are other things, of course. The constant drinking; drinking to have fun, drinking to black out, drinking to forget, drinking to cry. The use of physical attacks and abuse; not only to feel better by seeing the other person bleeding, but to ask to be hit, as if that lessens my own wrongdoing, or because I deserves it.

But worst was the similar use of emotional attacks and abuse in this episode.

I'm thankful that at least on dramabeans here, the unhealthy nature of Our Oh Hae Young's emotional state has been highlighted. It's easy to cheer and say 'Yes! She's communicating with the man she loves!', but often it's been with complete disregard of how the other person feels.

She's wanted those who she does not like to feel pain, hurt, and have bad things happen to them. This is not only with her. I hear such sentiments most in Korea, in its media, and in the speech of my Korean friends: to wish hell on your enemies, for them feel a similar or worse pain. Of course, we can all feel like that sometimes. But I hear it repeatedly about ex-boyfriends, the friends that have done them wrong, their parents, grandparents, society in general. I feel like it is the dark underbelly of a culture that prizes Confucian ideals of filial piety.

And here, when she asks him to beg - in public. And Hae Young reflects that he had not said he loved her; that that was what she really wanted to hear. Oh, I totally understand why she would want to hear that. But to make him beg in public because he did not, as a punishment? I was grateful Do Kyung walked away (though this has its own issues). But then his best friend says - why didn't you do what she said, you should have done whatever she said, why do you have so much pride?

Really?

How is that healthy in any way. How is it healthy for a woman who is in love with a man, to say, because I am hurt, because I am frustrated beyond belief, you must also be embarrassed, you must also feel hurt - in fact, you must be publicly punished. This does not mean I’m angry at the writer for this scene, because I thought it was terribly realistic. Oh Hae Young is desperately hurt and needs an outlet right now; I completely understand that, and sympathise, because we don’t always act the way we’d like to. If she regrets it later, (and genuinely works to find a healthier outlet), I do not mind. In fact, I like it.

But the best friend, really? Well, in a sense, of course he would - he’s a ladies man, he knows exactly what the women want to hear.

Perhaps my fear is intensely personal, for as a Korean myself, who is lectured by those older than me and who have been in more relationships than myself, hear such things constantly.

Now, my frustration does not particularly highlight the problems of the drama - yet. If the writer manages to highlight the insanity at play here - and you really do start to feel things and people are getting out of control in this episode - I will applaud her. If we find that they manage to become emotionally stronger and healthier through their trials, I will cheer in joy.

I think we did get a hint of it with the younger brother’s relationship. I sighed when he took them off for the PD best friend, because it signaled him choosing work/the power of this woman over his girlfriend. But then when he asked his girlfriend why she needed to use such a display in her fear that he would cheat, that resonated with me. It seemed to be a reflection on the other characters too, an easy fall back of trying to control or manipulate the person and giving the excuse of ‘love’ to wrap it in.

But if it does not, I will be so scared. For it plays directly into the consciousness of Koreans in their 20s and 30s today, what dating is, what a relationship is: that dating and relationships should fulfil (only) themselves, things that make (only) themselves happy.

So I hope that this is an episode where the viewer can look at their own selves, and judge their own past actions, that were excused with reasons of ‘but I was in love’ or ‘I was angry’. But I know many in the audience will not, they will take it at face value, and applaud Oh Hae Young as they did all along - especially because Noh Hae Young was embarrassing, but also frightening, in her selfishness.

I am scared to open facebook, for I will see videos of this episode being shared on popular korean pages and liked by my friends, with thousands of comments agreeing with her actions, tagging their boyfriends and saying ‘this is how you should have responded, do you understand now?’

(Sorry I know this was long. I love this drama. I do.)

Thank you for expressing your thoughts. I agree with you, completely.

"She’s wanted those who she does not like to feel pain, hurt, and have bad things happen to them... you must also be embarrassed, you must also feel hurt – in fact, you must be publicly punished."

Some of Our OHY's thoughts have bothered me for a while, especially during her beautiful bike ride down the Han River during which she wishes every woman in the world dead, and everyone who doesn't love her dead. Our girl has been so wrapped up in herself, and while I usually forgive it in K-drama characters, this drama is popular because of how relatable, how real it is. I see this in my everyday life too. It scared me when Our OHY became violent in this episode, I could barely watch it during her outburst at Other in the previous episode (at the work event after hearing the phone conversation).

I know some are sympathetic, saying that Other was too much, that Our girl just had too many years of being overlooked and abused for her name to take it anymore. However, I was still deeply disturbed. Our girl's actions have been unsettling to me for a few episodes now, how mercurial she is, how her identity is completely and utterly wrapped up in a man.

Which brings me to agree with your comment of the consciousness of 20/30somethings. I fear that we are now at the crossroad of still accepting and submitting to a patriarchal, deeply conservative society; yet being unabashedly individualistic in our view of relationships. I don't know the answer, but I'm glad watching this drama is giving us the opportunity to explore how we view the evolution of relationships in today's society.

I think if there's one silver lining in all of this, it's that the drama does seem to say that this isn't healthy - no one is really in the right here, in how they responded to the reveal. (the Hae-youngs are selfish, our Hae-young and Tae-jin are both violent, Do-kyung duplicitous and prideful - and none of them are celebrated for it).

It's possible that in the heat of the moment things might be different, but I do notice that a lot of the problems here are the result of the characters taking a very all-or-nothing approach to things. No one meets each other halfway. And what you said about younger-gen relationships in Korea is interesting too - it almost feels like the degree of conformity and deference imposed by more formal/familial relationships means that the only outlet to be more individual, is in personal ones.

Yeah, people are rarely called out for their actions in their drama, but when they do, it's spot on. e.g. the sister simply stating that she's disappointed in DK (but also telling him to chin up), DK with his step-brother, sister, and mother.

If the last six episodes pan out well, I'll really respect this writer. For the shame culture was fixated on in earlier episodes, and for it, we pity our Hae Young and understand her request to pretend she called the wedding off. We are frustrated by the neighbours who make it their business to know everything. We judge the gossips at the workplace, and the men who go googly eyed over a pretty woman. While the sister and best friend's love line is played for comedic effect, the pregnancy is a heavy burden, a result of drinking and unprotected sex. On and on.

But oh man, it's going to be a hard road for at least another couple of episodes.

@kit,

I appreciate your comments on the social and cultural implications of the attitudes and behaviors expressed by the characters in OHYA. As an American, I am clueless as to what is full-on satire, and what is a slight stretching of reality in relation to Korean society.

What immediately came to mind for me was the groundbreaking TV show ALL IN THE FAMILY, which starred the wonderful actor Carroll O'Connor as Archie Bunker, a bigoted WASP blue-collar Male Chauvinist Pig. This was in the early 1970s, and it was mind-blowing. Archie said out loud what an awful lot of people thought in private about such things as women's liberation, civil rights, class, ethnic and race relations -- holy cow, it was cringeworthy to the max.

While I think the show was intended to make fun of such troglodytic attitudes, all too many folks may have been laughing with Archie instead of at him... It's a fine line that scriptwriters tread... and sometimes the intended audience misses the wake-up call.

Hi, kit...

YouTube has a lot of episodes. I just checked. If it's possible to find it with closed captions, so much the better, as Archie's pronunciation and outright mangling of the English language (along with a New York accent) might be challenging to listen to.

You might recognize director Rob Reiner (THIS IS SPINAL TAP, THE PRINCESS BRIDE) in the role of Mike "Meathead" Stivic, Archie's son-in-law. The show spawned a couple of spin-offs, including MAUDE, named after Edith "Dingbat" Bunker's politically liberal cousin who locked horns with conservative Archie. (Bea Arthur, the actress who portrayed Maude, later starred in the acclaimed GOLDEN GIRLS.)

There's lots of social commentary. Watching AITF now is like getting in a time machine back to the pre-Watergate Nixon years, before political correctness set in. But because the Federal Communications Commission still had its list of words that could not be broadcast over the air, the humor was clean. (NB: George Carlin did a famous monologue on 7 words you can't say on TV... It's very funny and very crude. Not safe for work!)

I hadn't thought about it but Korea really doesn't have anything like All in the Family. No exploration of issues in a bold way.

I echo the sentiment.

It's interesting to me to see the trajectory of Our Hae Young: initially, I was so moved by her spunk, especially in the high school reunion episode. And then we see her slowly begin to unravel as her facade drops in the presence of Other Hae Young. Lastly, in these past few episodes, Our Hae Young seems almost unrecognizable in comparison to her earlier self in the face of conflict.

She does still feel very much like a real person, but she has stopped trying. Her lack of focus on her career, her family, on herself, in addition to her obsession with what I personally considered an unhealthy love with Do Kyung AND her constantly defaulting blame on Other Hae Young, gives viewers a growing sense of urgency for Our Hae Young to truly mature and evolve.

In my opinion, all of the main characters in this drama seem to have a narrow, unhealthy focus on relationships, including: Do Kyung's best friend, his brother and sister, and Other Hae Young. You see each of them give up or resign themselves to certain situations in the face of conflict, and my theory is the writer has set it up this way to propel their trajectories, with Do Kyung's death as a catalyst for them to heal their relationships and have a better outlook on their lives.

Her lack of focus I think is the point. A lot of times I was puzzled at why her parents seemed to be in so much pain and fear for Hae Young. Why kick her out etc etc I was going to write it off as a Korean cultural thing but now I think I ahve a clearer picture. Looking back at earlier episodes no one who knows her thinks Our Hae Young is acting like herself. It's shown multiple times that all the drinking, anger, self-pity is BAD! I know that no one has directly called her on it but the way it is starkly portrayed makes it seem lie they are at least commenting o how terrible it is to be where she is now.

That was put in a lovely way.

I personally think that at this point though, Do Kyung's death will destroy many of the characters. It's time for something positive to happen, stat.

I'm assuming that DK's best friend and sister will be forced to mature quickly due to the (SPOILER ALERT?) baby. I am confident enough in the sister's loyalty and work ethic, as well as the ugly past of a mother who was not a mother, will propel her forward in a positive direction. (The best friend, too, I guess ...).

I'm most concerned that the offspring will be doomed to have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and god/dess knows what other health and mental issues because both parents drink like fish every day.

Add to that the fact that Soo-Kyung is 44, and the risk of chromosome abnormalities such as Down syndrome increases. B vitamin deficiencies go hand in hand with the kind of boozing she does, so neural tube defects are another danger.

Lmao @PakalanaPikake

Well the doctor warned her so she can't drink away the pain now.

@Oshi,

*sigh*

I know I joke around a lot here at DramaBeans, but my comment was written as a serious statement of the consequences of one's actions -- and their impact on an innocent third party.

Years ago, after seeing one of their PSAs on TV, I interviewed the director of a refuge for babies born to addicted mothers; it aired on my college radio station. Her statement that alcohol causes more damage in utero than heroin or cocaine floored me. I've never forgotten it...

Haha, yeah, I'd just responded to a comment after you above. Classic case of victim becoming perpetrator.

I do think as the audience we're supposed to start questioning her actions, especially because all her phone calls with Do Kyung are so frustrating self-centered. He's called her when he's feeling at the lowest of the low, and he has other problems that don't involve her at breaking point right now, but she bulldozes over him.

Of course she can't know what's up, because he doesn't tell her. But old habits are hard to break, and slamming a guy for being silent and forcing him to speak up isn't the way to go about it. (I learnt that the hard way.)

EXACTLY. I look forward to reading Lolly Pip's recap for Episode 12, in which Our OHY's self-centredness continues.

I like how you put it - victim becoming the perpetrator. I don't think Our girl realizes that there are some things you can't change, and others that you can. In the previous episodes she talks about how she still loves herself despite all that has happened to her, but I don't see that self-esteem coming to play in the more recent episodes. She is just blaming and then doling punishments to people around her.

She hasn't spoken to TJ even after she found out the truth, and is just wallowing in self pity. Of course, she should be able to, but I wonder how long it's going to take. Because I think that her wallowing is making it less likely for DK to share his death premonitions with her.

I appreciated what so many commenters have said about this subject. I got so uncomfortable watching Our OHY lash out that I had to fastforward the attack in the restaurant.

No matter what the other OHY did or has done, our OHY was clearly in the wrong. I felt very troubled watching it.

I felt conflicted again when our OHY asked DK to get down and beg. I felt like her request was very very demeaning and I'm glad that he didn't do it. If the roles have been reversed, I think a lot of people would have been appalled if a man had asked a woman to do the same and expose her to public ridicule.

Another character who I love but often disagree with is OHY's mother. How can she expect for her daughter to confide in her when she lashes out if she hears what she doesn't want to hear?

Despite everything, it's still refreshing to see these very real human flaws in our leads and side charecters. I just hope, like everyone else that we get to see growth and development on screen (and show I don't mean via time lapse. You're better than that).

1

@JeSO

Mama Oh's ashing out has a deliberate pattern though. She gets angry but her anger is always directed at outside people. She supports her kid and demands she examine her feelings. This is something Our Hae young avoids. it's why she doesn't talk to her mom. Partly it's to avoid hurting her mom but mostly it feels like avoidance to me.

0

Oshi, I have to disagree. OHY mom doesn't only lash out at outsiders. She does that too, but she also initially lashes out at her daughter. For example, in one of the episodes momma oh asks OHY is she still likes that man. She indicates yes, and her mom immediate reaction is to hit her. This is pretty constant throughout the show. Yes, she may defend OHY, afterward, but if I had a mother like that, I probably wouldn't tell her anything. Not just for the fact that she is quick to judge, but she also takes on other's offenses and is slow (understatement) to forgive. For instance, say I had a fight with my friend and shared that with my mom. I only shared one side of the story. Later I made up with my friend but now my mom hates my friend and refuses to let it go. This is pretty much what OHY mother does.

1

yeah, the not-kneeling scene made me really uncomfortable too - but it's consistent with our Hae-young as a character, which is why I can understand it from a character POV but DEFINITELY not as a reasonable request. Like we see her reflect on the way back, what she wanted was for him to prove he loved her - and there isn't really a side that can be taken on this one, either with Do-kyung's pride and the lies by omission, or our Hae-young completely flying off the handle.

I have a much different take on the scene where OHY demands that DK kneel down and beg...and all the scenes following where she wishes he will suffer...it's all because she loves him desperately and she KNOWS - to the depth of her soul - how much he loves her. She needs to do whatever it takes to break him into the truth - to drive him to the ground - to break him into bits so he will realize the truth of his love for her. She is doing the tough love thing - the same thing drill sergeants do in basic training to break a spirit before it is rebuilt...or the same thing when families do an intervention to get an addict into rehab. You HAVE to do it this way -it seems cruel but it can be the ONLY way a person can be saved!! I have experienced this myself in my own life. THIS is what she is doing because, for all her faults, OHY is a deeply in-tune person emotionally. She is doing this out of desperation for the love she feels for him and her desire to rescue him and bring him into the light. She knows he has to be stripped bare and made raw before the truth of his love will be revealed to him.....wait til you watch episode 12. I applaud OHY for EVERY move, action, reaction, all the days in bed she's taking. This is what the depth of love feels like, looks like, IS like.

Yes, on the surface, it seemed she was venting her anger and trying to assert some power after feeling like a pawn in someone else's chess game. But underneath, I felt like her commanding him to beg was really about wanting him to surrender-- not submissively surrendering to her will, but rather, surrendering his pride, protective shell, guilt complexes-- everything that's been impeding his ability to love wholeheartedly. He isn't quite ready to do that yet, but he's getting close-- hence his repeated walking away and turning back.

I just realized that he did the same turning-back dance when struggling with the decision of whether or not to bring the lunch box that HY had made for him. I think Hoon commented that DK had made a point of never doing the lovers-lunch-box thing-- which could represent an inability to accept love. So his decision to bring the lunch box, share it publicly, and enjoy the food HY's family had prepared for him, could be seen as a big step. But he still has more healing to do before he can allow himself to fully surrender to love.

In what way a relationship between a couple is similar to the bullying and humiliation army superiors do to the new recruits to break their spirit and make them obedient, although with hate in their heart?

I would totally despise the spineless man who would do this if I had commanded him to.

This is why I love Dramabeans, you have issues playing out in front of you in the screen, and it's making you think, is it how things are done in the world? At least for me. And people here are rationally discussing and pointing out the issues, and I just love you all.

I've always thought that our Hae Young is very impulsive even in thinking (the wishing for all women to be dead) and had I've known her in real life, I think I wouldn't like her very much. But she does make me question my principles of letting loose, of what and how far should I go, am I really withholding too much. Because in real life, in all honesty Do Kyung is a lot like me, and it can get very lonely at times, trying to feel rightly, and to do the right things, doing things that only lead to something fruitful (he's said he's sory, what more does she need? Saying 'I love you' in this situation seems insincere).

But I have to say, both characters are incredibly flawed, but not necessarily bad people per se. But I wonder how our Hae Young will get her character development, if not at all?

@kit, I didn't have the same reactions as you did to this episode, though I can see your perspective.

Sometimes when you've been so hurt that it's unreal, when the circumstances impacting your life are so insane that it's impossible to understand, you act out. Your environment has become so unbelievable that you wrest control back by being outrageous yourself, because otherwise you feel like the world is just going to run you over. You make yourself stand out so you can't be collateral damage.

I think that's what OHY is doing here with her outrageous outfit (I once had a roommate who dressed up in formal wear to study for finals). She also tries a number of times to get Do Kyung to talk, but it's been his nature all along to be silent, and she ups the stakes finally to a demand that he beg. She's not making him beg because he never said I love you, she's telling him to beg because he's left a silent void and she's at the end of her rope.

As for her telling him that she wants him to be miserable? That's just projection. I've heard people in arguments say terrible things, but there's a difference between saying it maliciously and horribly, and saying it as an expression of your own grief. When she says she wants him to cry every time he thinks of her, I thought it was pretty clear that she was expressing how she felt.

It can feel weak to say "I cry every time I think of you". Saying "I want you to cry every time you think of me" in a vengeful tone can truly mean you want someone to suffer. But the way OHY said it, in a broken voice and exhausted, sounded to me like "this is how I'm suffering, and I want you to suffer this way too". He's hurt her terribly and if he really did love her the way she loved him, then it's only right he feel the same agony.

This part of your comment bothers me a bit: "Such an extreme reminded me of radical groups, like feminists who would like to step on men to get ahead, because ‘they’ve done the same to us for centuries’, for this method of retaliation and pain is terribly unhealthy."

This seems like a poor analogy. On many levels. Especially since that's not really a brand of feminist that exists.

Yeah, I'm glad that this show has more depth than say, Marriage Not Dating. MND was a light fluffy show that you could consume quickly and binge watch on a lazy Sunday, that's not me trying to disparage it, but it just didn't require much thinking.

Maybe if I was marathoning OHYA, I would feel bogged down by the sadness, or frustrated by some of the "one step forward, two steps back-ness" of the characters actions. But watching it week by week, I like that I can think about it for a few days afterwards and really digest what has happened. And that when I try to predict what the characters will do next, I'm almost always wrong.

I don't get the feeling of "one step forward, two back" because it feels like SOMETHING is always progressing. Other shows are exhausting because they're on a treadmill, but this one's got tons of cogs moving all the time so there's constantly something going forward.

And I love that, for me at least, Do Kyung's personality has been both consistent and on a slow burn. It was easy to overlook his silence when things were upbeat, but the difference is fascinating when things are bad.

Do Kyung is largely unchangeable in his outward behavior throughout. When everyone was happy, his underlings and brother would snipe about him behind his back and treat him like a taskmaster, and OHY was able to interpret his silences perfectly. And now things are bad, it's clear his team are completely devoted to him and that a lot of that sniping wasn't serious, but now OHY isn't willing to bridge the gap and actually wants DK to speak, he can't. Because he never has. She's asking him to do something incredibly alien to him. It's really interesting.

It took 10 episodes to realize that Do Kyung's stoicism is actually a massive handicap, because it's not even that he refuses to explain himself - it's not even a consideration for him. It's going to require a huge effort on his part to change a core piece of his personality and open up and talk.

I think when any of the four are together now, they're pretty much ticking time bombs. They honestly need to get away from each other and solve their own problems. I know our Hae Young and Do Kyung want to be together (and lord knows *I* want them together), but I can't see them having a functional relationship unless we get some sort of time skip with the knowledge that they all got some kind of professional help.

I have a suspicion that Do Kyung is not seeing a psychiatrist but is dealing with his problems through his subconscious. At can't see an ethical mental health professional responding in the way that is depicted. I agree all 4 of the main characters need counseling. I do believe that they all loved their original partners or they would not have been so adversely affected when their relationships ended. But our Leads have a special connection, that once in a lifetime bond that begs understanding, that signifys that something is missing when the other person is'nt around. I do however think Our Hae
Young needs to distance herself from "the mess" and gain strength and better coping skills. The Other Oh Hae Young is self centered and has been a problem in her life but should not in any way define who Our Hae Young is. Tae-Jin is described as violent and I agree but his rage is understandable. This drama is phenomenal. The response on this site are so thoughtful that it blows me away. Luv Loli pop and Dramabeans.

The psychiatrist isn't real. What he's seeing right now isn't real. He's maybe in a coma already LOL and just reliving his recent past. His subconscious/psychiatrist is trying to wake him up. Though the psychiatrist he's seeing right now can be a real person/doctor he was seeing in the real world.

I have to give kudos to the director again because that moment when DK was staring across the street at himself and watched himself get hit by that car definitely gave me chills. I felt like I went from watching a drama to a horror film.

I'm starting to believe that his visions are a warning to him to start living his life and stop being afraid to give more of himself. I almost wonder if it might be a sign from his dad, a way to give him this lesson since he is not alive to teach him this in person. This may not be true but i just think that if this was just him longing and reminiscing while dying, he wouldn't have such strong visceral reactions every time there's a possibility of not seeing her again. Every time they drift apart, his visions come back stronger and hit harder to push him back towards her.

But seriously, I was so bloody mad at DoKyung this episode, not because he hid from her, lied all those times, didn't beg or say I love you or being cowardly or anything but I was furious with him because he doesn't see HaeYoung as an equal, a person who can accept and handle grief and pain and sorrow.
I know, she's not exactly the strongest person on earth and she breaks down quite a lot but, who were you to decide what happens to her without giving her the chance to decide with all the information?

And TaeJin scares me. I guess normal people lashing out and hitting others like that (given the circumstances) would be seen as normal but TaeJin is so big and well built that he scares me.

Tae Jin's reflexive violence scares me too. But I also see him set up as a foil to Do Kyung, who doesn't freaking react to anything EVER, and I question which method is more unhealthy. Tae Jin certainly unleashes his frustration--to the point of harming others. Do Kyung, on the other hand, blames and hates himself for everything when it goes wrong, and just tries to bear it stoically. Where it's taking him? A fatal car crash. I think I'd rather just hit someone.

I love how this drama is playing out. Shit hit the fan in this episode, but I thought it was done in a very realistic albeit dramatic way. I expected to cringe at all the lashing out but found myself still being able to relate to the motivations and actions of the characters. While our Oh Hae Young is in a very unhealthy emotional state now, her reactions and thoughts are understandable (directing her anger at Noh Hae Young) and that scene where she asked Do Kyung to beg was so powerful and heart-wrenching. I expected her to pull away from Do Kyung after finding out that he ruined her marriage but it's a fact that she still wanted him there and then, and gave him the option to fight for her (implicitly) despite how broken she is. And asking him to beg was her way of finding out whether or not he did love her was completely in character, it wasn't unreasonable. Our Oh Hae Young reacts in extremes and a less volatile reaction would have been strange to me.

Yeah I was surprised to see so many people having a negative reaction to the begging scene. Because honestly with DK, pride hasn't done anything to help him at this point, and I thought groveling was totally warranted on his part.

It's also why she refused to have the conversation in private. She wanted him to let go of the safety net he tries to keep around himself and his image.

I wasn't too fond of this episode. It made me realise how I find a lot of the base conflicts in this drama not all that compelling. Like the whole same-name issue – which is like a high school conflict to me, which, at some point you'd just leave behind. And the whole ruin-the-wedding/go-to-jail which just doesn't quite add up for me.

And then there's the fact that everyone is so hung up on their ex. The Other Oh Hae-young with her extremely selfish "It's okay you hurt 100, 1000 other people". Tae-Jin who presumes he can just ignore OHY's request to meet a day later and come with a huge bouquet of roses and what looked like another engagement ring (what planet does he live on?????? Dude, even if she wanted to date you again, there'd be major issues to resolve before you should think about marriage again). And then violently beating up Do-kyung (which already bothered me in the episode that Do-kyung attacked him first... why do people in this drama not just walk away? Why do they engage?). I get Oh Hae-young snapping, but I can't say I'm okay with her attacking the other OHY. She needs to forget about this woman and just live her own life. It really doesn't matter that someone else has her name (again, it's because I don't buy in that in Korea-with-its-limited-names you'd get such a name-conflict with ever-growing repercussions...). Why was OHY so accommodating to Tae-jin on the phone? No need to meet in person, just say "It's over."

And the people around them... I'm sorry to say I can't stand DK's best friend character (and don't find him funny/amusing) and I roll my eyes with his and Isadora's interactions. They're constantly drunk. How do these people even have the professional life they supposedly have?

I'm not out of love with the drama, but in this episode it felt like it was trying too hard to create so very intermingled conflicts that don't seem quite that real. Even when people are complicated.

Sure... but everyone around her – her whole office – also gets hung up about two people sharing a name and acts like high schoolers b/c of that – when it must be a really common scenario in Korea to have two (or more!) people with the same name.

well, the point of the writers trying to makes it's not so much about someone having the sama name, rather than trying to explore how Exterior appereance means so much and often an advantage to get society attention. in other words, first appereance.. It's a hard truth in our society. People always got extra attention compare to plain average looking, particularly in Korea where beauty means so much. And She has other advantage aspect like smart and rich. To make it the message get to the audience, they make it comparison by making them thesame name and how society treat them differently. It's interesting topic....

Perhaps, but it's just that I don't quite buy into the base conflict.

And the other thing is, they'll have to cast an "ugly" or "plain" actress and make Oh Hae-young dumb – but she's just as pretty and I have seen no indication that either Oh Hae-young is notably more intelligent than the other. Just that the Other Oh Hae-young has a higher position at work.

Tbh my real name is quite common so I introduced diff nicknamed to my primary, junior, senior and college, even my professor.

It's pretty easy when you realize there's another same name in your class and choose the part of your name to let someone call you that after primary school.

On the surface sure you're right. The conflicts seem so shallow.

What separates the show and ultimately creates such compelling viewing is that those conflicts are just surface level. The show is much more about trust, openness, and an examination of how people value each other.

I was an impatient nelly this week and didn't want to wait 13+ hours to find out how things were gonna go down, so I followed the episode by looking at the live tweets. With the abundance of angst and bullheadedness I saw, I thought this would be a very difficult & frustrating episode to actually watch.

So I was really surprised that I actually kinda loved it? I know it sounds weird, and I'm a really empathetic person so normally when the characters I love are miserable, I'M miserable, but watching all 4 characters reach their breaking point and finally release all the grief they've been holding onto for past 6 weeks felt unexpectedly cathartic. And it was so satisfying.

I loved the confrontations we got this episode. The fight with HY, DK, and TJ was extremely well done (I'm really impressed with this too, considering that according to bts photos, this scene was only shot 2-3 days before broadcast. Live shoots always make me nervous. I have no idea how these productions pull anything together under such a time crunch. Nevermind it being good...I am a little worried for the actors' sake though...Eric's dark circles are getting a lil' intense...) Same goes for the confrontation between HY and DK later. Reading ahead of time how DK was going to refuse to get on his knees, I thought I was going to want to drop kick him in the head (I mean I still do...but more figuratively) but him not doing so is sooo true to his character flaws, and it's more than just pride. The main problem with the way that DK loves is that he refuses to do so in a way that puts his heart in more jeopardy than his partner. He keeps walls around certain things so that even if shit hits the fan, he won't face the brunt of the fire. It's why he wasn't able to love Other Hae Young fully, and why he still can't fully commit to Our Hae Young now. And to be honest, it's selfish, but from what we know about his character, completely understandable. (Note that I don't excusable, but understandable). So I like that by having Jin Sang call him out on it, the show calls him out on it too.

I know by the amount of caps lock and expletives I saw that a lot of people aren't happy with DK (and I actually think that the people who are anti DK and anti Main OTP are valid, so I'm not gonna try to tell them they're wrong). But I still think that while the characters do make some frustrating choices, the show always make their choices understandable.

HY taking out her anger by beating PHY? Stupid? Yes. But understandable? Yes too.
DK unable to be humiliated and let go of his emotional leverage? Stupid? Yes. Understandable? Yes too.
TJ wanting to kill DK...Other HY's relief at the reassurance of DK's love, even at the expense of others?
I don't like any of these things, but I can understand the logic behind them. So they're tolerable to me.

i was painful to watch tae jin and hae young's suffering in this episode. i can't imagine how it would be like to have your life ruined over someone's else's mistake over NAME CONFUSION out of all things.

the other hae young becomes more irritating as the episode goes. and your so right about how she is so self-centered. how can one not feel guilt what so over, even all this mess wasn't her fault to start with. and what? does she expect do kyung will just come back with her now, and live happily ever after??! aishhh

the car scene was hilarious! good mix into the rather emotionally wrenching episode.

also on a different note, i thought our hae young blouse-the one she wore when she found out everything-was pretty until when she turned and it says 'make me smile or cry', such a random quote.

Man this episode was hard to watch. Even though I'm OHY/Do Kyung OTP all the way, Do Kyung deserved that beat down from Tae Jin. I feel so terrible for Tae Jin and our Oh Hae Young.

Yes, Oh Hae Young was out of line when she attacked other Oh Hae Young but it was totally in character and even understandable (given OHY's tempermant, not really in real life).

Other Oh Hae Young, well this wasn't her shining hour but her reactions again were within character and understandable.

I love that this show doesn't shy away from showing the flaws of all our characters. No one is wholly good nor bad, love doesn't go to most deserving person.

This episode was hard to watch, poor Oh Hae Young, why wouldn't Do Kyung just SPEAK!! I was practically willing him to just say 'I love you' to our Oh Hae Young. My God!

I see a lot of people feel sorry for tae gin........... I don't think he deserves our sympathy. True Do kyung was the one who made the investment fail, but that does not mean you run to your girlfriend and break off the wedding by telling her 'I hate the way you eat'. There is no excuse for doing that.
And also Do Kyung did wrong by ruining that investment, but I don't think he ruined anything else.
There has to be some shady things going on in his business ( I really don't think he deserves sympathy for that)
The car scene made me realise that tae gin may be a little (maybe more) crazy than I thought(HE REALLY IS ).
Do Kyung you better watch out, tae gin is out to get you

I just feel like his rage is understandable. Particularly if we judge him by the other people in his universe. Oh Hae Young's mother who strips down and fights people when she's upset (even though we love her), Oh Hae Young who gets physically violent with someone who while perhaps being the catalyst or cause of much of her trauma is not actively doing anything her harm except existing in her sphere of influence. Do Kyung who as far as we know has ruined two people's lives and has no real consequence for it? Terrible mothers, weak, pitiable girlfriends, drunken sisters who have affairs with married men, best friends who do the same.

I mean there's not a character who is not flawed. I find his palpable rage perfectly understandable. Do I think violence is the answer? No, but here? I get it. I'm not saying I want Oh Hae Young to go back to Tae Jin. I don't think she should. He has to live with the consequences of breaking her heart. He chose that path and now she's moved on, that's on Tae Jin too, I don't disagree with that. But yeah if I was in the same place and dealing over and over again with Do Kyung, who looks pretty smug when he's looking Tae Jin unapologetically in the eye. I do think that beating is deserved. But yeah I thought that car looked like Tae Jin's and really if it's going to be anyone then he's the likeliest candidate. Still I sympathise with where he's at right now.

This show is killing me. The sh!t has hit the fan and I am now suffer from emotional whiplash because of it.

First - I just want to get it out of the way - Park Do Kyung's friends are #squadgoals. LOL. They might not be the brightest tools in the shed, but they are fiercely loyal.

Second, our OHY just cannot seem to catch a break. I find it hard to breathe when I watch her gut-wrenching scenes. You know how we sometimes feel extreme secondhand embarrassment? I feel secondhand heartbreak from watching her.

And third, poor Han Tae Jin :( Victim of a very unfortunate circumstance. I want to give him and our OHY a big hug.

Lastly, I CANNOT EVEN with googly-eyed OHY. Instead of feeling bad that someone's life got ruined because of her name, she rejoices because that meant PDK loved her? Shut the front door. Just shut the front door, barbie. I don't think anyone likes you anymore. My desire to slap her just became bigger than Soo Kyung's love of alcohol.

I find it funny that Dokyung and Haeyoung's lovey-dovey relationship lasted a whooping day or so! At least they were cute then...

As despicable as I found other Haeyoung's reaction to the whole mess I find it consistent with what we have seen about her personality so far: she never intended to be outrightly malicious, but she's so self-centered she doesn't really care that her actions might bring harm to others. I guess that makes her a bitch, but I can't seem to completely hate her either... Probably because that behaviour stemmed from her own severe abandonment issues and insecurities that I ended up pitying her.

Dokyung's depressed duckling line was so cute! Especially because there was 6 of them in line that it reminded me of another (happier) train with Eric as the head xD

Thank you for the recap!

Same here - I think other Hae-young's self-centredness is astonishing (I really wasn't expecting THAT to be her response to the knowledge of what Do-kyung did), but I can't hate her for it either. Another amazing episode. They sure managed to flip all that happiness upside down pretty quickly, though. Ah, dramas, what you do to me.

I didn't notice until your recap, Lollypip, but it just struck me that they showed Tae Jin kneeling for forgiveness in this episode, unasked, while Do Kyung was unwilling to do the same even as Hae Young was screaming for him to do it. The nuance in the storytelling in this show amazes me. All the little details put this drama on a completely different level from your standard rom com (or are we deviating into melo territory?).

This show makes me think, makes me care about the characters, and really makes me wonder how the end will play out. I don't remember the last time I could say that about a drama

That's a really interesting point you bring up, @Liz. I never thought to compare the kneeling between Tae Jin and Do Kyung. That really gives me food for thought.

One thing is that TJ kneeled before her parents, not Our OHY, so she might not have had the reason to compare between them. A commenter mentioned above that the main themes of the show are love, pride, embarrassment. Our girl has mentioned before that she realizes TJ chose his pride over her, but it seems like he's throwing all of that into the wind post-prison while DK is still very much prideful first.

I wonder how it's going to change in the later episodes.

kneeling before her parents and kneeling before the girl is totally different...
Kneeling before elders is common as an act of respect and also for asking forgiveness (my native culture is similar to Korean..) Pride doesn't play a big role there.

But Kneeling before someone someone younger than you and especially to a girl (Sorry... gender equality still has yet to fight its way) is considered as great embarrassment and that to in public is out of question.. I doubt even tae-jin would have done that... It goes beyond pride and reaches the self respect territory.. But I truly wanted park do kyung to that to prove how guilty he was.... but that would have been out of character and not appropriate for the situation...

Hm, kneeling. As a Korean born and raised in a Western country, my Confucian ideals clash with my postmodern idealism and individualism, and both are then put to the test against my Christian beliefs.

I found it 100% acceptable for TJ to kneel in front of his almost in-laws, but 0% unacceptable for OHY to ask DK to kneel. This is because, in my perspective:
1. TJ's kneeling was a request for forgiveness, done by his own accord, in a traditional manner that befits both of their 'stations' in Confucian culture
2. OHY demanded it, it was to publicly shame ('beg'), and they are supposed to be equal partners if in a romantic relationship, and so it would have also been an abuse of power.

Funny. I wonder what other people think, due to their own contexts? Please respond :D

I'd like to comment on your point no. 2. I completely agree with you on this. I'm not a Korean so we don't share the same beliefs but I think Oh Hae-young went too far in that scene. I understand her anger but if Park Do-kyung had begged, I don't think she would have feel any better either since Do-kyung is not doing it on his own accord but he is merely fulfilling a request.

Required fields are marked *

I appreciated your insight into what you thought about TJ vs. DK kneeling. I never factored in the 'stations' even though I myself grew up in a Confucian culture (albeit a less conservative one than South Korea). I saw OHY's demand as her wanting him to abandon his pride, not so much a subversion of an equal partnership. I read it as more that she knows how much his pride means to him, and how she sees him abandoning his pride = displaying his true love to her.

Deep down she has a serious inferiority complex (IDK why, she has awesome parents who love her unconditionally) and the fact that Do Kyung was once with Other OHY just encourages this envy and insecurity to rear its ugly head. I didn't think of it so much as her shaming him, but wanting to settle the score once and for all, whether he loved her enough to throw away his prideful nature (what TJ couldn't do). I still agree with you, but I do think this other factor played a part in her imperious demands.

PS: Seems like we have a lot in common, @Kit! HAHAHA we'd probably be really good friends or drama buddies IRL!

UH...parents that love her unconditionally? Did you miss an episode? Her mother threw her out of the house because she cared more about what the neighbors think. I assume OHY is an only child since I don't see sibling. How could she and her mother not be close enough that OHY could tell her the truth? Maybe because her mother hits first and asks questions later? And the father might as well not exist since he just sits there looking baffled all the time.

I'm going to have to call you out a bit on that. Her parents threw her out because post breakup she was binge drinking and pretty much behaving deplorably. She wasn't behaving like herself at all and they couldn't believe this was their daughter. So they threw her out in an attempt to shake her up and get her to start moving on.

HY's dad is like any typical Asian dad (certainly mine). he never speaks much but a lots going on and when he does get involved it breaks you up. The conversation they have in the kitchen about getting Hae-Young out on a blind date comes to mind.

1

Oh, this adds an extra layer onto it! I was clouded in my fury to think further, ahem. (I have calmed down now, and Episode 12 helped, though I stand by my point.)

I guess she wants proof of love. What person would not? Words would have been enough for her, but DK did not say it out loud, so she asked for an action, but he did not do that either. I'd be mortified and heartbroken. She's off the rails right now, but I still feel for her, 100%. (And for DK, of course. And many other characters of this drama.)

And it has actually been so much fun holding legit conversations on this thread! I've only done this a handful of times here, but this episode really brought out the feels in me. I hope I keep seeing you around! If only we could apparate and huddle together to watch dramas <3

I think kneeling express "sincerity"
Lots of asian culture and religion pray/custom with kneeling to show how sincere/pure their intention.

It's not to acknowledge I am below you but I am sincere enough in what I said. So sincere that I am willing to go down my head (often refer as the holy body part) and let go my ego/pride/selfishness at this moment to acknowledge my wrongdoing to you.

I don't mean at fault for ruing her marriage , but of making her love him then running away and pretending to be remorseful. She is not going to swallow that.Remember the scene on the train, if only he told her then, she could have pulled away from him without falling deeper.,but of course he didn't.

I think koreans have a difficulty in accepting public humiliation.some students resort to suicide because they couldnt live up to their parents expectation and felt humiliated with their low grades or a celebrity killing themselves because they cant seem to accept that their popularity is gone or one of my favorite singer went into depression because his album didnt do will on the chart.

DK as a close off and private person, asking him to beg in public is too much to ask.i think OHY went to far with that.its public humiliation she's asking for.

SK already said she cant punish DK because he's already in a lot of pain and guilt, that i think he's punishing himself is enough.
its just one mistake that he made during one time he got drunk and it snowball from there to this mess.he was so guilty when he found out his mistake that he vomited.i know that he still have to swallow his pride and tell HY that he love her.i dont know if i made sense to you lol english is not my native language so i cant fully express my thoughts

@liz,

I noticed the parallel between TJ and DK with regard to kneeling and begging for forgiveness, too. And JS's sermonette on the subject. I get the feeling that to some degree it's a matter of form and going through the motions.

I'd be willing to bet that DK's refusal to kneel stems from two factors: His earlier decision to throw caution to the wind has just been torpedoed by the continuing visions of impending doom... by the end of the episode he realizes he should just bag it because he's going to croak anyway. He is a passionate person who DOES sometimes express himself -- when it comes from his heart, and not in response to a command that is not in synch with his feelings. Another angle might be that it's a matter of timing and having insufficient opportunity to let his inner dust settle.

Do Kyung is not a "passionate" person, at least nothing they've shown us about him indicates "passion". He's a cranky introvert. Nobody really likes him other than the Hae Youngs and his best bud. Everyone else avoids him. He's not passionate he's a brick wall.

@VeeVee, I think you certainly hit on it when you mention pride as Tae Jin's big flaw. I don't think he's ever given it up, though. He's currently scrambling to piece his life back together, but so many of his reactions are still linked to pride. He's not primarily upset that Hae Young moved on--he's pissed that Do Kyung, who he perceives to be the cause of all his trouble, is the one she likes. It's still pride. He's doing everything he can to put his life back together, but he's doing it to regain lost pride. He still values it over Hae Young, and it's the reason why he just won't do for her in the end.

As for Do Kyung, I don't think it has to do with pride at all--it's insecurity. I think he would have kneeled in a millisecond if he believed it would have made a difference in the outcome of their relationship. He still doesn't think he's worthy of love (and we know just which lovely ladies we can blame for that), so why would he bother kneeling when he *knows* it'll end in heartbreak for him anyway? Or that's my take on it, anyway.

@Kit, that's fascinating. As an American-born and western raised, the whole kneeling/bowing thing doesn't resonate much with me. It's just not done here, so I think of kneeling, even in abject apology, as something absolutely over-the-top and needlessly humiliating. I try to see it in the cultural context of the drama, however. In my mind, Do Kyung should, in fact, be apologizing to Hae Young. He should be begging. He should be kissing her shoes if that what she asks him to do. Considering how badly he's wronged her, I don't think kneeling once is out of the question. The 'station' thing you mentioned does make sense, but when even Jin Sang says he should've just done it, I don't give Do Kyung much leeway.

I think my favorite scene in this episode was the duck line of solidarity! I like how every character in this show whether it's a big part or just a side character really complement each other. Is it because they are all great actors, or is it just that they all fit together so well? It's really great to see such a complete and competent cast!

Now, regarding the conflict, I just don't see why both OHYs think that DKY ruined HTJ because of love. It was not out of love. Out of spite, out of hurt, pride, drunkeness, anger...but not out of love. But hey if that had not happened there would be no story and no OHY and DKY love. DKY left it up to fate and OHY is his fate. I find it interesting that the show focuses so much on embarrassment. Is that DKY's greatest weakness? Everyone does embarrassing things, what is the message? It's ok to be embarrassing? How people are governed by their pride?

There is so much focus on love, but for DKY it's just not about love only, he has his visions to deal with and his possible "death". He has been a tormented soul it's not as easy as just solving things by saying I love you. So I can see how he is uncertain and wavers and can't go past a certain point. I don't know why they think his accident means death. It could just mean he will have a near death experience, but doesn't need to actually die. He could survive. But I can see how he can be scared. I would freak out too! Stop driving and never wear the clothes I am supposed to die in! As some have said, maybe he will learn that he can change fate. Just like how he saved JS. JS was fated to have the accident but his fate changed thanks to DKY. I am hoping DKY's will as well thanks to OHY! Fighting! It's not the end yet!

Thanks for the recap Lollipop!

The duckling line of men was the best part of this episode. I especially liked the part where the men had left to find Hae Young and came back after finding the wrong one. The fact that they left one of the guys behind to keep trailing Do Kyung while they were gone...it got me right in the feels.

Glad the cat's out of the bag finally but frustrated at Do Kyung's inability or unwillingness to meet our Hae Young halfway or something.

Maybe I'm not seeing things from his perspective well enough, though I understand his feelings of guilt and perhaps sense of worthlessness. But that doesn't mean I'm letting him off for not trying to communicate.

He can see how much our Hae Young is hurting. If you love someone, shouldn't you want to help fix the hurt more than you worry about yourself or your pride? Also, if he had made a decision to "go all the way" with his feelings at the beginning of the episode (after so much effort trying to push away his feelings), why does he let the reveal completely destroy his resolve?

Because he's such a closed off character, it's a little harder to understand his motivations, whereas Hae Young is so open, it's easier to understand where she's coming from. This tendency for characters to be reluctant to simply communicate with each other is my biggest drama pet peeve...more so than wrist grabbing. I know, I know, the story would move too quickly, the problem be solved too easily if (heaven forbid) people actually talked to each other! It still frustrates me.

@Eyes,

Yes, I loved it that the guys left "adult supervision" trailing DK at a respectful distance. No man left behind...

Not only did I love the "Make Way for Ducklings" scenes, but the horseplay in the water added much-needed levity to an episode full of somber interludes. DK was actually smiling by the end of the splashing, and I was happy to see that. Plus the whole lot of them looked like little kids having a blast... and I loved the bromance.

They're basically good and decent sorts, and I appreciated their loyalty and concern. The MovieSound guys earlier expressed concern for their boss when Evil Mom shook him down for funding for her next movie.

I have another interpretation of DK's standoffishness when it comes to communicating with her. I think that in some ways, he's giving her elbow room and breathing space. Some folks are so joined at the hip that they don't know when to shut up and butt out. They fail to recognize that their constant presence prevents the object of their affection from having inner silence in which to mull and ponder what's happening in their life. They think they're being helpful and supportive, but they're really only being an intrusive distraction.

I recall reading that monks in some of the Christian orders that take a vow of silence do so to cultivate inner stillness in which to reflect upon their divine reading. You don't need to be a monk to need peace and quiet so you can hear yourself think -- particularly in the 21st century with ubiquitous communication devices interrupting you every five seconds.

@anglvue,

It is a smallish white sedan, not an SUV. It resembles TJ's, but so do a zillion other cars on the road. I'm not jumping to that conclusion just yet. ;-)

I spent 2 hours just existing on my couch after finishing this episode. Then another 2 hours biking around like a crazy lady with no purpose. Honestly, it drained me. The violent tendencies of Tae-jin scare me (makes me think maybe it was a good thing he didn't marry Our Hae Young).

While I don't particularly like Jin-sang's careless (would you say he takes things too... lightly? Or just not seriously?) I think he made a good point in this episode to Do-Kyung. DK can like someone but he's also reserved about it. He doesn't show his hand, allow himself to be wholly vulnerable and that's why he doesn't tell Our HY he loves her.

I also don't like Our HY's disheartened (more like life has stopped and she's ceased to have any cognition of life) reaction to what happened. I wish she were stronger. I wish she would get back up again. Go to work. Episode 12 was also just.. But at the same time. I feel her. I feel her sorrow, anguish and pain. She didn't do anything wrong but shit keeps hitting her because she shares the same name as NoHY. As a viewer we see her pain and we want her to overcome it but the way she's approaching it right now is, in my opinion, very unhealthy and borderline childish. I'm glad she has the guts to do some of this stuff but at the same time I'm wishing she just forgets these two men and finds herself (and maybe a Yoon Doo Joon while she's at it or something, he'll appreciate the way she eats).

I JUST WANT THINGS TO WORK OUT. T-T

That guy is all red-flag behaviour. Violent and possessive. That's why I don't feel sorry for him at all, unlike some viewers.

It's too bad an investor pulled out of his business, but that's as much as I can feel for him. His reactions to everything... are not okay. Not a guy to marry, but one to run from.

I'm with you... I truly felt that he was more upset about his business ruining and that now OHY likes DK.. Seems like he took it granted that our oh hae young would just accept him if he just gave the jail explanation... Roses and ring explains it..

Our OHY was more upset that DK loved other OHY that much and doesn't even tell her that He loves her..

Seriously these two care less about their marriage and their future getting ruined which DK is so guilty over...

Not to mention the cringyness of HY voicing her distaste of showy gestures like huge bouquets and getting down on one knee, followed by Tae Jin planning to do exactly that? It only supports that either A) She acted different around him to fit whatever she thought was his standards or B) He never really knew her that well at all.

I completely lost all sympathy for PDK in this episode. It's interesting that the recap skews things slightly in his favour because to be completely honest, this episode is not afraid at all to show PDK in a much more callous light than leading men usually are shown.

Okay, let me point out some things that are somewhat different from the recapper. I don't believe that PDK had any intention of our OHY the truth until she mentioned that she was going to see her ex and he realized that things are about to unravel so he tried to do some preemptive damage control and insisted that she meet him first. If she hadn't mentioned Han Tae Jin, he wouldn't have even thought of spilling.

Another disparity with regards to reading or perhaps translation is when our OHY, dressed in her fishnet stockings, is walking away from the confrontation and crying. She mentions that PDK never once said that he loved her. The absence of his verbal expression of his feelings, PDK's inability to give word to his feelings, is reiterated once and again over the course of this drama specifically in these two episodes. When his best friend asks whether he even truly loves our OHY, he says it should be obvious but it isn't and in fact, I had the uneasy feeling that he doesn't love her and it was his compounded guilt that got mistaken for love.

It was very telling, in my opinion, that even on his way to tell our OHY about the shitty thing he did (spoiler: only he didn't), he is still thinking about himself. He is getting ready to devastate HER and instead of thinking about the pain she is going to be drowning in, he is thinking that she should not abandon him.

Colour me less than impressed, dude. Don't get me wrong...I think PDK is flawed as hell and I don't think a relationship for either of them is a good idea (not without better shrinks and longer time spent in therapy) (someone teach our OHY to value herself for who she is and not who she becomes through a man's eyes) but I still love the increasingly complex character he is.

Honestly, as much as I enjoy the actors, I feel like the writing is slipping especially where pacing is concerned. Both episodes this week didn't need to be two episodes. I felt that the same old issues were being regurgitated and in fact the ending of episode 12 is very similar to that of episode 10.

Still, I'm in it for the ride. As long as nobody dies. Nobody had BETTER die. I'm still not over the disaster that was 49 Days.

For some strange reason, I feel very little for PDK. I can't really connect to him, neither to cheer for him, nor to condemn him.

<I don’t think a relationship for either of them is a good idea

I think my ideal scenario is that all of them... just untangle themselves, move on with their lives and take care of their own issues before attempting any relationship (and when they do, it should be with people with which they have zero history). Oh Hae-young saying "I'll throw myself at any man right now" in a previous episode really made me think that she needs to find happiness on her own first of all. She doesn't need to escape into another guy. Which is why I'm glad that Do-kyung didn't beg and walked away. (Now they should just all never see each other again.)

well, It's might be due to Eric lackluster performances than anything. PDK is someone I can relate to... I fell Park Do Kyung is a well written character so far. ... I swear I know he is limit, but the lack of effort to add depth to the character is bothering me so much.... Imagine if PDK given a more capable actor, We will see his inner feeling much more and we will more connect to him

I do wonder if it's to do with how stoic and quiet in nature DK is as a character that makes it harder for us to connect. For instance we can see whenever he encounters something difficult he would escape to record sounds and evaluate his situations. It's a simple action but stands to say alot about how he handles tough situations. Whereas OHY would use a more physical action eg. throwing a stone or her bag and crying in public to show her frustration.

Well, This kind of character (with distant personality) is really hard to potray with an actor unable of nuance acting. For example, look at Song Jong Ki potraying Kang MAru or Jung Kyung Ho potraying Jung Shi-Hyun. They add nuance to the character despite their character personality (silent, distant from people, etc) , so we can connect to their character more . An actor who can act in silent moment.

There are so many moment I expected him to add depth to the character, but he didn't.

0

I don't think his performance was off. The difficulty inherent here is that the writing suggests that this really is how PDK is supposed to be portrayed. The lack of depth feels more like a choice to withhold a bit of the character in order to make it easier to sympathize with him later. If that makes any sense. Every time I feel like a layered approach would work better Eric holds back the reaction and you can see him shut off. I've been seeing that as him playng the character as directed? Maybe I'm wrong here?

I agree with you. I believe Eric's portrayal of PDK is exactly how the writer and director intended for him to be. I feel that PDK is a tough onion that is requiring a whole lot more work to peel as compared to other male leads from other dramas. They hold back from revealing DK not only to HY but even to us, the audience.

1

YES YES YES! This week's episodes have been heavy on Our OHY's suffering, but I think we should also analyze DK's actions and how he's still doing it wrong by her.

I liked how Jin Sang asked Do Kyung what I think many viewers would be thinking - Dude, do you even love her? But I disagree with you on one count: I think that DK does love Our OHY, because as he said himself in a previous ep: he feels pity for the ones he loves. We could argue that that's not really love at all, but that is love to him.

Maybe at the end of the day the writer just wants to show us that we are all deeply selfish creatures. The characters are portrayed as good/bad at first, but then everything kind of turns grey. The comments above show how many of us are disturbed by OHY's actions and thoughts. Other's reactions have always been depicted as selfish. Evil Mom is Evil. TJ put his pride over OHY. Now DK (who destroyed a person's life for his own vengeance = selfish) is still focused on himself even after crap hit the fan.

I also slightly disagree on your point that the episodes didn't need to be two episodes. I thought that this episode allowed us to really ruminate on the situation and understand the depths of our characters' flaws. The next episode had many many plot points that I think will be teased out. I feel like the writers are leaving bread crumbs for us to pick up and all will make sense at the end.

But yes, I'm still in for the ride. Monday can't come soon enough! (said no one ever before OHY Again but now everyone's saying it)

Yes, I'm surprised this is the first comment to mention that PDK was only going to tell OHY because she mentioned she was seeing her ex. I also feel like a lot of PDK's characterizations are doled out as the story needs, and it doesn't feel as integrated. For example, the beginning of the series was all about DK feeling guilt for ruining OHY's wedding/life, and then all of a sudden we take a 2 episode detour into childhood-issue land. Where did that come from? Now we get into "you don't let other people in" and other OHY saying, "I thought you didn't love me because you didn't contact me." Our OHY has always been able to understand that DK likes her because of his actions, even when his words say otherwise. Now his actions are just indiscernible. Everyone is a huge mess!

I thought the childhood scenes important but also, similarly, quite abrupt. I think in this case, the drama would have benefited had they shown bits of the flashback over an extended number of episodes. This would have worked wonderfully to establish the intense impact the trauma had on PDK's character and make it seem more integrated into the narrative.

Agree. Makes me wonder if it's slightly poor planning on the writers part or intentional. It kind of makes the viewer go along for the ride, like our heroine. I sometimes feel alternately frustrated and then forgiving towards the male lead.

Honestly, I think I just read this differently. I think he was going to tell Oh Hae-young, no matter what, now that they had started a relationship. I think her planning to meet her ex that very day did scare him into trying to tell her as soon as possible, but I definitely don't think he was planning to lie by omission for their whole relationship if Tae-jin just happened to back off. I do think it was selfish of him to try and control the reveal and that's why I was glad to see it backfire in the way it did (as painful to watch as it was).

I understand people losing their sympathy for the character, but I still see his potential to be a better person and I'm looking forward to his turning point.

Yes I noticed that too, so I cross checked and It saw it was not the same. From tae gin's car scene you would see that there is something on Tae gin's car which is not on the car that would hit our handsome yet frustrating Do kyung.
But I would not be surprised if Tae gin is the one behind our Do kyung 's accident.

Welp, guess I don't have watch this episode. From reading the comments here, everything I was afraid was going to happen did so. And I'm glad people are becoming more aware of Hae young's violent emotions. There's been signs of it for a while now, and it's just off putting.

If I think about it, the violent-ness of Hae Young has been apparent since she started to like Do Kyung. She is a very possessive person and self-pities herself a lot. She is indeed very clingy, and it's not in a good way.

Honestly, the only victim in all of the this is Taejin, granted he should have told her what was going on immediately. I read last week they were thinking of having a open ending for this drama and I think with the way this episode went, it's a good idea.

Anyway, thanks for the recap! Will keep reading to see what happens to Tae Jin in the end

But we don't know if OHY was also equally as outwards going when she was with Tae Jin though. We never really got to know her when she was engaged to him. All we've seen so far is the broken hearted OHY, so I don't want to be so quick to say she's violent ever since meeting DK. I think it's in her genetics as her Mum is also quite outwards in her actions.

I think although the drama never directly showed us how HY was when she was with TJ, it did give us ideas based on some things. For one, HY identifies herself as being under the 'third tier' group of people, whereas TJ was the only 'first tier' guy she dated. Also, if you notice the way HY dresses in the first episode at the breakup scene, and compare it with the way she dressed through the other episodes so far, I think it's quite obvious that she probably put in effort to be a 'first tier' girl, in order to be befitting of him. Her inferiority complex implies that she probably felt her true self was not worthy of this great guy.

Oh Hae Young - she should go for a vacation to rural areas of Korea to eat and discover traditional Korean foods. Learn the way to prepare it. It will be awesome for her resume. (I'm thinking of Let's Eat 2)

Park Do Kyung - received an offer from US as a sound producer for Fast & Furious. (I'm thinking this due his work for the car scenes)

Han Tae Jin - expand his business internationally to Taiwan & China.

Pretty Hae Young - I don't really care what you want to do. Can you just disappear?

Totally agree! I can't see a future between DK and OHY right now. It's like they all need to be isolated and given some time on a remote island to rethink their actions. The whirlwind of emotions right now just isn't helping anyone. No one is thinking clearly and it's just extreme moments everywhere.

I actually laughed out loud at the train of minions scene. Thanks for the comic relief, Show!

It's frustrating to see Park Do-kyung going back on his words "Let's go til the end". But at the same time, it's totally understandable. He IS going to explain everything to Dirt Hae-young but what can a guy do when she refuses to listen and just walk away? (I don't blame her at all, she will need some time to think and cool down too). Plus can you imagine how scared he is looking at his own blood-soaked future self? Enough reason for his heart to waver and choose the easy road instead - to just be the bad guy and let the girl go.

Our Dirt Hae-young...sigh. I wish someone will give her a wake up call. I know she's at her lowest right now but beating up Pretty Hae-young is not going to help. I wish she'd listen to what Do-kyung has to say, whether it will all sound like an excuse or not, they need to talk it out. And to make him beg in public? Whoa girl, why don't you use that time instead to sort out everything honestly instead of demanding forgiveness. We all know what you need was not the grand gesture of Do-kyung getting on his knees anyway (you just want him to say "I Love You") so why bother? Sometimes women are really hard to figure out when they want their men to do something but they actually want something else. It's a good thing Do-kyung just walked away. I don't think it's because of pride or anything, I just think that Do-kyung can feel that kneeling will not solve anything.

Lastly, I love the OST by Jung Seung Hwan, I think the chorus is powerful and totally reflects both our main character's situation in episodes 11~12.

If it were you, how do think it will be?
I'm saying what would it feels like if these crazy days became yours instead.
What if you were alone and destroyed just as much as I was?
Will you finally understand me then?
My heart's about to explode, and I'm filled with pain
Can you see how much I want you?
If I were you I would just love myself.
