News bites: June 25, 2016

Ha Jung-woo, Kang Haneul, Kim Sung-kyun

  • More fun cameos are in store for Entourage, with frequent tvN collaborators Kang Haneul (Misaeng) and Kim Sung-kyun (Answer Me 1988 & 1994) popping in for guest spots. Kang will play himself, and he’ll be appearing to support his buddy Park Jung-min (the two share the same agency and appeared in Dongju together). Movie vet Ha Jung-woo will also cameo, in what will be his first drama appearance in nine years! [Osen 1, 2, Joongang]
  • Speaking of Entourage, mark another win for CJ E&M and tvN: The publication rights to the show are about to sell for more in China than the publication rights for Descended From the Sun sold for. Descended sold for 250,000 USD per episode, while sources have revealed that Entourage will sell for nearly 300,000 USD per episode. (CJ E&M wouldn’t confirm the numbers, stating that negotiations with China are still ongoing.) Some have attributed the bump in price to the popularity of Lee Kwang-soo and Seo Kang-joon in China. Entourage will be entirely pre-produced and is expected to premiere simultaneously in Korea and China in mid-October. [Joongang]

  • Jo Yoon-hee, Lee Dong-gun

  • I like these two and this pairing: Lee Dong-gun (Superdaddy Yeol) and Jo Yoon-hee (Pied Piper) have confirmed they’ll lead Laurel Tree Tailors, the family drama that will follow Five Kids on weekends beginning in August on KBS. Jo’s character’s been through a lot, but she hasn’t let life’s knocks get her down — she’s as sweet, determined and energetic as ever. [DongA]
  • It’s official: Kim Joo-hyun (Modern Farmer) has beat out over 1800 candidates and is confirmed as our newest Sassy Girl. She’ll reprise Jeon Ji-hyun’s iconic role in the sageuk reboot of My Sassy Girl opposite Joo Won. [Star News]

  • Kim Joo-hyun, Seo Ji-hye, Moon Ga-young

  • Seo Ji-hye (Yes, That’s How It Is) is joining Jealousy Incarnate as a spoiled announcer who only cares for herself. The daughter of a powerful politician, she’s been coddled her whole life and has consistently received preferential treatment. Also joining the show is Moon Ga-young (Mirror of the Witch); she’ll play a high school student and Lee Mi-sook’s daughter. The drama from the writer of Pasta will air on KBS on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in August. [Joongang, My Daily]
  • Writer Kim Soo-hyun’s weekend drama Yes, That’s How it Is is being cut short by six episodes, and will end its run with 54 episodes instead of 60. The reduction wasn’t due to low ratings (it’s averaged about eight to ten percent in weekend ratings, which isn’t remarkable for a weekend network show, but isn’t poor, either), but because of the Summer Olympics. The SBS weekend drama aired its 38th episode this past Sunday. [Herald]

  • Kyung Su-jin, Chansung

  • Web drama Romantic Boss has cast Kyung Su-jin (Plus Nine Boys) and 2PM’s Chansung (Ms. Temper and Nam Jung-ki) as its leads. Kyung’s character frequently secretes stress hormones and goes into comical hysterics. (I’m not sure if the press is being overly descriptive, or if she has an actual medical condition.) She still loves her ex, Chansung, and despite having broken up, they continue to live together because of the deposit they paid on their place. Han Joo-wan (Hwajeong) will enter the picture and turn the former couple’s relationship into a complicated love triangle. The show will focus on working men and women in their twenties and thirties, delving into their various jobs, dreams and dating lives. It’ll be be released in September in China and Korea on the web. [Xports News]

  • Seohyun, Kim Hyung-min

  • SNSD’s Seohyun (Warm and Cozy) has landed the lead in a Chinese-Korean web drama tentatively titled Canvas King. An exchange student who transfers into an international school, her character is mischievous, tenacious and stubborn, but weak when it comes to love. The plot revolves around a boy from the entertainment world entering academia, and his lovelines with two young women. Posters for the show were shot last week, and a promotional press conference will be held next week in China. [Joongang]
  • The remake of 1% of Anything has lured Kim Hyung-min (I Need Romance) back to the small screen after a five-year hiatus. He’ll reprise the character played by Lee Byung-wook in the 2003 version, a chaebol heir, distant cousin and rival to Ha Suk-jin’s character. The drama will be 100% pre-produced and air in the latter half of 2016. [Xports News]

Aw! I was rooting for Jung In-seon after watching her performance in MOTW. Her acting gave me the chills, especially in her final scene.

that's weird though the last time i checked the results of the voting jung in seon had 60 ish percent while kim only had 20ish percent. How does that work?

The basically had someone picked out from the beginning and the entire "audition" thing was for media play. kim joohyun had already worked with the PD for this drama. I don't understand the point of conducting a public poll if they weren't going to use it as a deciding factor in casting the main actress. jung in sun was leading by a huuge margin.

I saw the reports about Entourage selling for such a record breaking high price, but I'm not exactly sure why DOTS is being used as a barometer for selling prices in China. There are at least two to three other dramas, including Entourage, that sold higher than DOTS, one of which is from around a year ago lol.

This doesn't have anything to do with the broadcast station though, it's not like DOTS is a tvn drama.

Relax i know that, but its TvN who sold the drama, so its a record for TvN.

Exactly. Because JangKong was just referring to the first part of your comment. He/she ignored the latter part. Your repeated replies totally miss the point.

Someone decided to reply to my comment but couldn't be bothered to address the main argument, yet I'm the one missing the point.

Sure thing.

It's simply a comparison between a wildly popular drama and showing that it's surpassing the benchmark set by said popular drama (DoTS) which is garnering attention and some hype regarding the Korean Entourage remake. No need to get defensive nor be so dense, it's such a minor detail.

Because DotS is the first successful pre-produced drama to air simultaneously in China and Korea. Commanding a 250,000 per episodes was the highest at the time.
(I don't remember a drama that was sold for more than 250k before DotS).

Saimdong hasn't aired yet but was sold for 270,000. We don't know if it's going to be as popular. Investors are banking on Lee Young Ae's reputation and popularity thanks to Dae Jang Geum.

Entourage (300,00)hasn't aired yet so it looks like the price for pre-produced dramas will keep increasing.

Hwarang sold for 300,000 per ep. before Entourage, and Pinocchio sold for 280,000 per ep. a year and half ago. So, yes, there have been at least two, that have sold more.

Forgot about Pinocchio. Pretty impressive for a drama that was not pre-produced.

Hwarang is yet to be aired. Hope the investment will be worth it.

Scarlet Heart: Ryeo is the highest so far with 400,000 per episode. Now I get why the trailer looks so darn gorgeous. They have money to spend.

I guess the next big pre-produced drama will be sold for 500,000 per episode? Lol

The Koreans are obsessed with money and the Chinese are obsessed with Korean dramas.
I hope this trend stays in dramaland. Chungmuro, hate to see Korean films going down this route. Keep it Korean for Koreans.

I mean yes Pinocchio's number is impressive, but it starred LJS and PSH which are some of the biggest names in Hallyu in China, so I wasn't surprised.

Also, I could be wrong, but pre production doesn't necessarily mean it'll be sold for more, doesn't it basically mean that it'll be easier to simultaneously broadcast in both countries.

It's just that the pre produced dramas, so far, have bigger names attached and backing from big channels or production companies.

I mean IU and LJK's dramas sold for supposedly that amount to China, but I would say LJS and PSH still have way more star power even if their drama sold for less. Although with more and more production companies pandering to China, that may change.

I think the Chinese hallyu drama market is a bubble, just like with Japan and kpop. I'm surprised the Chinese govt. hasn't done more to curtail Korean drama's influence, but I could see them stepping in soon.

0

You are not wrong at all. Pre production doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be sold for more. It's more to do with the popular Hallyu stars than the quality of the show.
I think Scarlet Heart: Ryeo's high price is a combination of a familiar and popular Scarlet Heart (Chinese novel and the tv series) plus IU, Jun-ki.

I don't think this trend is going to last either. K-dramas etc used to be more popular in Japan but it has declined. I think Japan is trying to produce their own cultural version of Hallyu. The political tensions between Korea and Japan may have played a part in it too.
I can also see the Chinese government putting restrictions on Korean Hallyu at some point.

0

The chinese government has done something to curtail k dramas. Prior to 2016, every drama is available online readily to everyone. But the new regulation stipulate that only 30% can be foreign content. However this probably back fired to paid online channel buying popular drama at high prices to show to subscribers. This probably lead to the rise in prices of korean drama exports.

People asked them the same thing back during Park Shi-hoon's scandal and they said in a podcast that they would rather not. This is a site to discuss dramas and the actors as professionals, it's not like AllKPop or Soompi. They figure there are already plenty of places for those topics to be discussed, DB doesn't have to be one of them.

Has anyone know how to watch WEB DRAMA? Is that means I have to watch it on airing time in particular website? Or should I depend on generous drama website (ex: dramaf**e, gooddr**a) to sub and upload it one day in the future?

I love Kyung Su-jin and I really want to watch her web drama. I think her last drama is not "Plus Nine Boys" but "Bluebird House".

Usually it will be airing on Naver TV Cast first at specific day and time and their China web partner. Later fans will upload on YouTube or Dailymotion. If lucky, it will get subbed by fans.

Great news this week!

I'm looking forward for all the cameos in Entourage. Pre-produced shows have raised the bar quite high in terms of quality and selling rights.

Some web dramas are funny and well-made. Some performances are good as well. I like Kyung Su-jin, she's talented in both melodramatic and comic roles. She only needs more projects and I'm sure her star will shine among her peers.

Just to mention joowon's vote was also considered when top3 were selected. plus I don't get why you don't trust the production team when everything was live unless you're hoping this production will fail
