Crossing over into each other’s worlds in W’s first teaser

Finally, the first teaser for W–Two Worlds! The first trailer for MBC’s new Wednesday-Thursday series is a cryptic glimpse at our main characters, and though it doesn’t do much to answer all our questions about the mysterious plot, it’s nice to finally see our leads in action. The supernatural suspense drama stars Lee Jong-seok and Han Hyo-joo in a romance that travels between fantasy and reality, when an event allows them to cross dimensions and enter each other’s worlds.

The writer of time-travel dramas Nine and Queen Inhyun’s Man returns with the new supernatural series about parallel universes — one fantasy, one reality — that exist in the same space and time. Lee Jong-seok plays Kang Chul, a super-chaebol worth trillions, and Han Hyo-joo is Oh Yeon-joo, a surgeon who’s on a mission to find her missing father.

Everything about our hero Kang Chul seems to place him in the fantasy world: The teaser opens with him driving fast cars and singlehandedly winning street fights, and then mugging for the camera in the rain. Like his life is a commercial for beer, because he only does exciting and/or photogenic things.

Our heroine Oh Yeon-joo, on the other hand, looks frightened as she runs through a world that seems foreign to her. The copy reads: “A space between broken dimensions. Two worlds.” She wakes up in a strange place and cries, “I think I’m going to get captured by the police! What have I done?” She does in fact get arrested and interrogated by the cops for something. And elsewhere on a rooftop, Kang Chul looks bloodied and bruised as he asks in voiceover, “Oh Yeon-joo, where are you right now?” Probably in your world, looking for you!

I think I’m going to like the angst and suspense derived from both of them being thrown into unfamiliar worlds. Just as long as they get a chance to be in the same space at the same time! I know they’re meant to be star-crossed, but I don’t want them to be that star-crossed.

W–Two Worlds follows Lucky Romance on Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning July 20.

That rain-fight scene was really hot.

I saw that rain-fight right after seeing a pic of Lee Jung Jae ripped body in this photo http://s1192.photobucket.com/user/girlfridaydb/media/news/2014/BigMatch17.jpg.html

and then saw Lee Jong-seok's toothpick body in another pic. So when I saw the fight scene I couldn't stop laughing. I'm just hoping that he gets the same body transformation others like Yoon Si Yoon had after going to the army.

I agree that my comment was sexist, I should've qualified my comment in that it's hard to believe that someone of his current body type would easily defeat multiple men attacking him at the same time. I wouldn't have made the same comment if it was simply a romance with no extravagant action scenes. And I usually get really annoyed with everyday characters who face a terrible tragedy and decide to seek revenge and suddenly and miraculously knowing how to fight and use weapons.

I think you should search his latest photo shoot which released today to see his gangester shoulders ( His shoulder were the hot issue in choosing topics by reporters)

Then again martial arts is a matter of techniques not especially muscles, if u see most of martial stars are short & even thin, like as Bruce lee, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen...

0

but lee jongsuk is 4 dan blackbelt in taekwondo

i bet he really can kick some ass

0

have you seen crouching tiger hidden dragon?
a petite girl was able to defeat army of huge men, only with her sword.
Besides, the protagonist lives in the fantasy world which is completely understandable why he was created that way.

0

@kkljaem and @Toothpick, I just did a quick search and you're right. I (in good nature) take back what I said and stand corrected. I guess I was blinded by my prejudice and should have done my research beforehand :D

0

@hyperbutterfly
It's ok sweetie & thank you for your awsome manner:-)

0

in all his dramas he has been pictured as jjang of a fighter. so how does it feel weird now?
in martial arts, it is not about the body type. it is not like it is show wrestling.

Oh gross. I hope he NEVER gets a body like that. Not everyone finds that over muscled and veined look appealing. He already has the height, wide shoulders, lean body and cute looks going for him I don't see why he has to be ripped with muscles on top of it all.

Remind me of jongsuk say to Rain (bi) he want bodies like rain. But rain said don't do it, because girls not really like his body.

0

If he was a brawler I might expect more muscles, but check out the precision in that scene - he's able to aim his leg and flex his foot in a way that isolates his strike and hits his opponent precisely in the head, in two different ways. Being as long as he is, the torque he gets on his strikes must be incredible.

yeah, fighting isn't always a matter of size - Lee Jun-ki isn't hugely muscular either, but his martial arts training helps him make it perfectly believable that he could take down someone in a fight. And like you said, LJS has training and height on his side.

And honestly, for Western fans, after years of iconic pop culture featuring tiny slender girls who beat up things several times their size (Buffy, anyone? Sarah Michelle Gellar also had a brown belt in taekwondo), this doesn't really require any suspension of disbelief at all.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

This is why I don't watch movies were women/girls are beating up guys twice their size, because it just seems so ridiculous to me. I'm a female, but I like shows with female characters I can believe and root for. I agree with you on one point though, in that LJS is a lot more believable than girls/women beating up guys twice their size.

0

To be fair, every single show I've seen where a pint-sized girl is able to beat up multiple men twice her size, is because she's either got supernatural powers (Buffy) or been enhanced in some way (Black Widow, River Tam etc).

As long as the story provides me with a believable reason for what I'm seeing, it's good.

0

Lol I just think this comment is funny because Lee Jung Jae is not considered "manly" in Korea either. Mostly because of his narrow shoulders, he's more of a model type. LJJ got a lot of hateful comments too for making his body like that for the movie. Oh well.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I've read an interview where he sort of whines that no matter what he does, he stays slim. He's aware of it, and probably worries about it. He hates exercising; but because he know that it's what's considered manly, and he wants more "manly" roles, he's trying his hardest.

Feels like anything he does with his body people will still shit on him. People made fun of him for being 'chubby' in High Kick 3 so he lost a ton of weight for his next roles. Then people started making fun of him for being skinny and called him an anchovy. He then started gaining weight because he didn't like the way he looked so thin onscreen and now he's working out extra hard because he thinks he has to. :\

If tiny girls like Buffy the vampire slayer can beat up armies of demons, tall skinny LJS can at least beat up a few guys.

I really want this show to be a comedy, because the setup is so much in line with my favorite kind of humor. I absolutely love stories based on hyperbolised and satirical stereotypes. SO FUNNY. I don't know if I really want to watch this if it isn't. :/

SAME. i mean i will watch it cuz Lee Jong Seok! and the writer. but i'm gonna be laughing at all the serious scenes and then feel bad about it. OTT melo isnt my thing. but who knows there might be plenty of silliness and humor to go with the dramatic scenes. one can hope?

also as much as i would like to roll my eyes at ljs fighting thugs in the rain like the lead of an old school gangster movie, he's always surprisingly non awkward in such scenes. its good fight choreo too, which helps and is necessary. but he's been in other roles where he gotta fight ppl and I never think to myself that it looks silly or super fake. basically if the show is half as entertaining as that clip then i wont be mad at all hahaha.
I'm also suddenly remembering his role in School 2013 specifically.

As per usual, MBC promos look cheap and tacky to me. I was previously happy to learn that the actual cinematographer is Jeon Byungmoon (Bubblegum, Missing Noir M, Ten) since I didn't get far in SWP to have much of an opinion about director Jung Daeyoon, so hopefully without all the effects and fast editing like in the teaser things will look better in the drama.

ooooh I love books featuring alternate-universe versions of London/UK, what you described sounds a lot like His Dark Materials.

my only recent read featuring an AU London was more Harry Potteresque than HDM-esque, it had a young witch going to Eton in the 1800s to hide from the Big Bad in the Muggle world. And in true kdrama style, she had to cross-dress to do it!

PS : I corrected the name of the book above.

The book I was talking about was The Burning Sky, by Sherry Thomas - if you like historical fantasy with AU elements, you might like this.

Though I see some complaints on GR that the language used is ~too historical~ and not enough like YA - I wonder what those people expected, given that the book is set in 1883!

Ah! i remember this book - where the girl is a fire mage ??? I dropped the book around the whole friend's wedding sequence

I never had an issue with the 'too historical' part since i have read most of sherry thomas's historical romances. I just got bored with it. the main character did not hold my interest at all

too many book, too little time :(

0

This is VERY late and idk if you'll ever see it, but - I really don't think this is the same book, there's no marriage thing there, she just makes a potion for use at the ceremony and that's vhen everything gets set in motion.

It takes a chapter or 2 to get going but the meat of the story only begins after she reaches the school.

Required fields are marked *

I don't want to be a downer, and this is my most anticipated show, but I was expecting something darker and more intense. I thought the initial synopsis said that the heroine's father was writing a horror/suspense comic book, and then the main character (that the father is trying to kill) kidnaps the heroine.

This teaser looks cute, but it lacks that edge and suspenseful atmosphere I was expecting. I also think it makes LJS's character more of your average male lead type character, as opposed to a dark and complex character (like Jung from Cheese in the Trap for example, even though I have erased this drama from my mind).

The other thing is that LJS should've bulked up a little bit for the role, if he was going to be shooting action scenes like these. Here it is hard to believe that someone as lanky as him, can beat that many men. This only makes me think that someone like Ji Chang Wook or Park Hae Jin would've been more suited for the role.

Anyways I like LJS, and he is a good actor and I hope that this drama will turn out much better than its teasers show. I won't judge a book by its cover, so I'm still looking forward to this drama, and HHJ looks so cute and sweet in the few seconds we see her. I hope her character will be likable and memorable.

I just realized I wrote a lot, I guess it is because the teaser looked different from what I was expecting. Anyways wishing for the best for this show, and hopefully it won't disappoint.

Required fields are marked *

So your complaint is that 'lanky' Jongsuk (he's a 4-dan black belt in taekwondo in real life btw, we've been over this in the comments) wouldn't be able to beat that many men... so you think Park Haejin or Ji Changwook would be more believable.

Realistically speaking, you think Park Haejin or Ji Changwook could really take down like 10 men (all holding wooden sticks) on their own? If your answer is no then my question is-- where's the difference?

0
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

I wasn't talking about reality, we all need to suspend our disbelief on certain aspects of all dramas. However dramas should still be believable in selling the fantasy, and here LJS does not look believable (that's what I was saying). I didn't say anything about being realistic.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

If you're not speaking realistically, then what are you basing your opinion on regarding why those two guys would be more believable at beating up 10 men than Jongsuk?

And so you do acknowledge that for these stories you need to suspend your disbelief but somehow you can't do that for Jongsuk... but isn't it because your fantasy derives from sexism on what a man is supposed to look like? Even when 'lanky' Jongsuk could really high-kick people due to his training in real life?

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Prettyyyyy sure PHK is skinnier that Lee Jong Suk and Ji Chang Wook would be around the same as LJS accounting for the height difference.

0

@Chimichangas

Sweet&Sour starts off with saying Jongsuk should've bulked up and went on to call him lanky so she/he does have a fantasy of what a man's supposed to look like here, all that had been pointed out were looks. Regardless of the reality of what you think Park Haejin and Ji Changwook's body-types are like, Sweet&Sour doesn't find them lanky and think they're bulked enough to name them as examples, for her/him they're men that fit into that fantasy for her.

I'm a little confused by your oponion, Based on what u said all martial art super stars like as the ones mentioned on another comment should bulked up more, even more than LJS to fit the roles which they are professional at it!

Also the power point of LJS is choosing different characters, It's not like he should choose flower boy next door roles!

I can see why he was the first production's team choice for this role, he is good at acting & his acting skills are great, he is tall, knows martial arts, is hallyu star to bring a lot of money & have an aura around himself for portraying a fictional character!

And for LJS character thy never said he is dark! It's been said in his character description he is cool, righteous & charming.

lol, please calm down, all I was saying is that I was expecting something darker and with an edge that is all, because of the initial synopsis of this drama.

However it is fine if his character is not dark or complex, I will still check this drama out and hope for the best.

I'm really calm ( honestly I'm sleeping while writing this :-) ) but it wasn't all you said so I was confused & wanted to clarify some points. Just this :-)
I respect to your opinions & expectations and hope you the best in your life :-)

The "initial synopsis" you're talking about was never part of any press releases or from MBC. So, for me, I never really took it as the "official" premise of the story. Hence, from the little details they've given, these teasers were actually good. Immediately, you already see the difference in tones in the characters' own worlds - bright, upbeat, and fantasy-like in JongSuk's; dark, suspenseful, and ominous in HyoJoo's. But, I'm seeing the twist in that graphics silhouette, almost reminiscent of a yin yang.

I liked how the teaser introduced to us both leads where each one of them seem to be living in his own world, which is what is the story is all about :D they succeeded to deliver the idea.

I'm looking forward to this!! Love LJS's work and haven't seen HHJ on the small screen for a while. The plot seems interesting. Also helps that I love Queen In Hyun's Man and glad the writer is helming this series. =)

This is gonna be good. At least, I hope so. I have trust in the writer-PD pair.

Love Han Hyo-joo in her movies (and variety guestings lol) and I love Lee Jong-suk is almost everything. He always has amazing chemistry with his co-actresses, so here's looking forward to some sizzle on screen. I mean, he was the only one to make something of a kiss scene with Park Shin-hye so that's saying something.

Metallica's "Enter Sandman" as background music, too? I already wanted to watch this series, but that was an added bonus for me. Yeah yeaaaahhh! Whoooooa, woah! (To the tune of the song, of course)
