Oh Hae-young Again: Episode 6

We finally learn a bit about the past, and a little insight into why things ended up the way they did for Do-kyung. Things are not always as they seem, not that it excuses lack of communication and abandonment, but it may offer a reasoning that softens the blow. But truth always brings the possibility of change, which isn’t always a good thing, especially when a tentative peace has just been established.

EPISODE 6: “Half love, half pity”

Do-kyung goes looking for the source of the crashing sound he hears, while our Hae-young cries for him to come home, and the other Hae-young gasps for air in the streets. He sees a vision — an object flying through a window, and our Hae-young on the other side, fury in her eyes.

As it turns out, the other Hae-young was hyperventilating, triggered by an old typewriter she saw in a shop that reminded her of one that Do-kyung used to work on. When she thinks of him a deep bitterness rises, something she could never tell anyone. She thinks that she wants to tell him why she left like she did, but he doesn’t seem interested in hearing it.

Hae-young’s mom gets angry when she hears that Dad agreed to set Hae-young up on a blind date — they don’t need to get rid of her that much. She yells that Hae-young doesn’t need a man and can live alone perfectly fine. Go Mom!

Dad uncharacteristically insists that she needs to get married, because when he thinks what his life would have been like without Mom… and he gets choked up. Awww, Dad. Mom heads out to Hae-young’s place, but she narrowly misses her daughter on the bus.

She calls Hae-young to yell at her for her messy apartment (as she cleans it up — once a mom, always a mom), then she sits down among the debris to snuffle that her daughter and husband are both pitiful.

Do-kyung can hear singing when he arrives home, and he recalls his premonition of Hae-young angrily throwing something through a pane of glass. He lets himself into Hae-young’s place and sees someone lying on her bed in a face mask, listening to music.

Assuming it’s Hae-young, he pulls out her earbuds and grouchily asks why she’s not at work, telling her to knock off the humming so he can rest. Startled, Mom just nods, and after he goes back to his side of the door, she wonders what the heck her daughter’s been up to.

She finds the landlord’s assistant who tells her the whole story, how Hae-young and Do-kyung fought over who should move out, but eventually decided to live in peace. But they were supposed to construct an actual wall, and Mom’s eyebrows shoot up, knowing that they haven’t.

At least Do-kyung is handsome and has good specs, being the CEO of his own company. Mom goes home in a bit of a daze, and tells her husband, “Kicking Hae-young out was the best thing we ever did for her.” HA.

Jin-sang wants all the juicy details when he hears that the Oh Hae-youngs met each other, especially curious to hear why Do-kyung’s ex left on their wedding day. Do-kyung says he didn’t ask, claiming that he’s not even curious. Jin-sang declares all Oh Hae-youngs to be nuts, and wonders what our Hae-young will do when she finds out what he and Do-kyung did to her fiance.

When Soo-kyung skips home drunk yet again, Jin-sang declares her perfect circus material, heh. She randomly asks if he thinks the aliens are coming soon, and he says they are, just to get rid of her.

We get a little insight into why Soo-kyung drinks to oblivion every night — apparently she got dumped, and she’s been going to the restaurant where they used to go every evening, hoping he’ll show up again. She messes up her hair in case she sees him again, so that he won’t recognize her when she does.

She imagines herself in the midst of an alien invasion with her love, happy that the world will be destroyed and she doesn’t have to hurt anymore. They’ll both just die, and it will be over. It’s a frivolous image, but in reality, Soo-kyung cries her heart out.

Mom takes Dad to visit Hae-young, though it’s really an excuse to get a closer gander at Do-kyung. They pretend to be just arriving when he comes outside, and Mom makes a point to mention that it’s Hae-young’s birthday, and the poor pitiful thing hasn’t got a man to celebrate with. Dad just stands there openly inspecting Do-kyung, until Mom finally drags him away. Once they get inside, Dad can’t stop giving the secret door the hairy eyeball, hee.

Hee-ran feels bad that she’s got plans and can’t celebrate Hae-young’s birthday with her, but Hae-young says she’s too old to make a fuss anyway. She forbids Hee-ran to tell Do-kyung that it’s her birthday, and says she’s going to end her crush anyway, now that she knows he nearly married the other Hae-young.

Do-kyung is fighting the urge to call Hae-young, and she plans to spend her birthday evening alone. But a knock on her door proves to be Do-kyung armed with drinks and snacks, which is so cute I can’t even stand it.

Despite her earlier decision to stop liking him, Hae-young runs around cleaning up and setting out the snacks he brought, and when he lets himself through the secret door she sees him in romantic slow-motion, heh. She teases him for bringing snack cakes instead of a real birthday cake, and he shyly pulls a tiny little music box out of his pocket. How are you so adorable, sir?

He plays it off like it’s no biggie, just something he had lying around, but he’s not very convincing considering that it has a fluffy teddy bear wearing bunny ears on it. Hae-young calls him out for being afraid she’ll attach some meaning to it, and says that she knows exactly what this gift means. She winds up the music box and they both listen to it tinkle out “Rock-a-Bye Baby.”

Hae-young gets a call and goes a little stiff, telling whoever is on the other line that she’s alone. Do-kyung goes back to his own place to answer a call from Hoon and reset his recording equipment, then steps outside to toss his car keys to Hoon to borrow. When he heads back inside, his recorder is playing Hae-young’s tearful pleading from the other night.

He hears Hae-young saying that she likes him, and how she’d cried that she was bored and lonely. He doesn’t see Hae-young in her apartment also listening to her own voice, until she barges through the door to stop the recorder.

Do-kyung defends that he’s not secretly recording her, it’s just habit from his career. He says that usually he deletes the recordings without even listening — in fact this is the first one he’s listened to since she moved in. Hae-young calms a bit and says she was just drunk, and that she throws herself at men all the time when she drinks.

Do-kyung fires back for her to stop drinking and throwing herself at just any man, not even him. It’s foolish and only hurts her. Hae-young asks why he’s angry, claiming that she does it with tons of men, he’s not special.

His doorbell rings, and they see that it’s the other Hae-young at Do-kyung’s door. Hae-young shoots Do-kyung this betrayed look, and goes back to her place. Too upset to stay where she knows the other Hae-young is, she goes out for an angry walk.

Do-kyung doesn’t feel like chatting with the other Hae-young, and just tells her to say why she’s here then leave. She says flirtatiously that she’d have to stay all night, then.

He remembers a time when he’d driven her home and she’d been distracted, but claimed to just be tired. It had been the night before their wedding and the last time he’d seen her, and he’s never figured out why she just disappeared. He tells her now that there’s only one resaon he can think of that would warrant his forgiveness, and asks if she had an incurable disease and was trying to push him away.

Hae-young says that’s not what happened, that she wasn’t sick, and Do-kyung’s eyes go hard as he says, “You should have died.” He’s furious that she’s back and acting like nothing happened, and his disgust is written all over his face. Hae-young smiles as she cries, which makes him even angrier, but she says that it’s always been her habit because he didn’t like women who cry.

He accuses her of blaming others yet again, and tells her never to come back here. But she wants to know why he’s attracted to our Hae-young — was it because of their names? It’s too big a coincidence for her to just accept it, but Do-kyung is offended that she’d think he was so hung up on her that he’d date someone just for sharing her name.

Just as their argument starts to escalate, a rock comes flying through Do-kyung’s window, smashing the glass. He looks out to see our Hae-young in the courtyard, hissing in anger with tears in her eyes. It’s his premonition come to life, and he watches as she whirls and leaves again.

Hae-young pedals her bike all the way to Hee-ran’s place, accidentally interrupting what looks like a very hot-and-heavy date. Hee-ran sends her date away and Hae-young tells her the whole story, even admitting breaking Do-kyung’s window.

Hee-ran thinks Hae-young should have stayed at Do-kyung’s and staked her territory (so to speak), but Hae-young reminds her how she always wilts around the other Hae-young. Hee-ran gripes at her to grow up already — they aren’t in school anymore, and what’s there to be afraid of? Besides, as far as Do-kyung is concerned, our Hae-young is winning right now.

Hae-young cries out, “He found out that I like him!” and tells Hee-ran how he recorded her accidental confession. She’s so embarrassed at how she rambled on thinking nobody would hear her.

She stays to spend the night at Hee-ran’s, who says that Hae-young has been acting out of character lately. It’s not like her to cancel her wedding, or to fall for another guy so quickly. She says she’s seemed like a different person, and she’s curious what it is about Do-kyung that’s making her like this.

Hae-young says that she’s just revealed her inner self to him — the one thing she couldn’t tell anyone else. Somehow she tells her deepest secrets to him, and once she started, she couldn’t stop.

Hee-ran says that means he’s her person to rely on, which sometimes happens between men and women. You meet a person and you just instantly know you can tell them things you can’t tell your closest friends. Hae-young smiles at that, and it calms her enough that she can finally rest.

A little while later she gets a text from Do-kyung: “Come home and sleep. I won’t say anything.” Awww, he’s worried about her. Hae-young turns over to go back to sleep… then jumps up and rushes out. Go, girl, go!

She grins a mile wide the whole way home, and Do-kyung is waiting on his balcony when she enters the courtyard. Cue super-awkward moment, hee. Finally he goes inside without saying anything like he promised, and Hae-young wilts, simultaneously relieved and disappointed. Also embarrassed… “I came home too fast!”

She makes a lot of noise coming inside, but Do-kyung just says through the door, “Go to bed.” She gathers enough courage to ask why the other Hae-young came and if she’ll be back, and Do-kyung answers that no, she won’t. Hae-young asks him again to disregard what he heard on the recording, and not to feel pressured.

Do-kyung quietly agrees, promises not to record her again, and tells her to go to bed. She does, barking her shin in the dark, but she still can’t rest. She bolts upright to add that she’ll pay for his broken window, even though Do-kyung says it’s not necessary.

Do-kyung does as he promised and turns off his recording equipment, even going do far as to dismantle it. He has another vision of Hae-young, smiling among a fall of cherry blossoms, saying softly, “Your hands are warm.”

The other Hae-young works out her frustrated energy on a climbing wall, replaying our Hae-young saying that unless she’s planning to get married, she’s just playing with Do-kyung. Seeing Do-kyung and Hae-young together is eating her up inside, as well as the hatred in Do-kyung’s eyes when she tried to talk to him. She loses her focus and falls off the wall, hanging in midair.

Do-kyung’s mom has lunch with her fiance Chairman Jang and his grown daughter, who clearly doesn’t like her. She points out that she’ll inherit everything when her dad dies, and she’s well aware that Do-kyung’s mom is there to try to get some of that money. She’s openly hostile, calling Do-kyung’s mom old and tacky, and finally leaves the table in disgust.

She runs into the other Hae-young on her way out, and it seems the two know each other, though the daughter doesn’t seem overly pleased to see Hae-young. Ah, apparently at one point Hae-young’s mother was married to Chairman Jang, though the daughter allows that she was the only wife that wasn’t after his money.

Hae-young goes in to say hello to the chairman, and things get really awkward she and Do-kyung’s mom recognize one another. Chairman Jang is completely oblivious to the frost in the air.

Hae-young approaches Mom in the lobby, and Mom is looking very nervous. Hae-young is colder than we’ve seen her, and reminds Mom that she once told her she’ll take after her mother and switch men often. She seems to find unhappy amusement to catch Mom with one of her mother’s exes.

She asks if being the fifth wife wouldn’t be humiliating, and Mom finally whirls around and spits out, “So what?!” She asks if Hae-young plans to try and ruin her wedding, and Hae-young says she does: “I want to ruin it just like mine.” Do-kyung’s mother screams back that Hae-young ruined her own wedding, and leaves as quickly as she can.

In flashback, before Do-kyung and Hae-young’s wedding, Mom had tried to call Hae-young several times, and when she ignored the calls, she found her at work and whacked her upside the head with her purse. I mean hard too, ouch. She’d followed Hae-young around the office loudly insulting her and her parentage, while Hae-young tried her best to ignore her.

She’d taunted Hae-young that her parents were divorced and had both been married several times, and now Hae-young’s dig about being Chairman Jang’s fifth wife makes a lot more sense. Mom was beyond vicious, and had even followed Hae-young home to bully her there as well.

She’d taken great pleasure in telling Hae-young that she wouldn’t be at the wedding only one day prior, and when Hae-young calmly accepted it, she’d jeered that she sent Hae-young a recording that she should listen to before marrying Do-kyung.

Back in the present the two Hae-youngs meet in their building’s lobby again, and the other Hae-young asks our Hae-young to please not ignore her. She invites her out for a drink after work, and says that she’ll just drink alone when our Hae-young declines.

The other Hae-young spends the evening looking at old photos of her and Do-kyung, and she’s kept an old cell phone that’s chock-full of pictures of the two of them. She even still has the recording that Do-kyung’s mother sent to her, and she listens to it again now.

Do-kyung’s mother is trying to call Do-kyung, and she rushes to his house. Soo-kyung stops her outside the gate (by literally materializing from out of the shrubbery, ha), and Mom runs in fear.

Soo-kyung chases her down and tells her never to come back to this house, but Mom stammers that she’s not here for Do-kyung’s money, she’s here to warn them that his ex-fiancee is back. She’s distraught that Hae-young’s mother was married to Chairman Jang, and that news makes Soo-kyung listen.

Of course it’s all about Mom, and she whines that now she may not be able to marry the chairman if Hae-young decides to pitch a fit. And no marriage means no money, which is the real problem. Soo-kyung sneers that she knew Mom had something to do with Do-kyung and Hae-young’s marriage not happening.

Mom defends her indefensible position, claiming that Hae-young came from a bad family, mostly citing that her parents were each married several times. Soo-kyung points out that Mom’s marriage to Chairman Jang would be her third, but naturally that’s different.

Soo-kyung loses it and screams that that’s not the real reason she stopped the wedding, and everyone knows it. She just didn’t want Do-kyung, her cash cow, taken away from her, and Hae-young was too smart to let him keep giving her money after they married.

Soo-kyung says that even animals are better mothers, and Mom’s just lucky that Hae-young left without saying anything to Do-kyung. She loved him so much she didn’t want to come between him and his mother, even knowing what a harpy she is. Soo-kyung wants to know what Mom did to make such a sweet woman do that, but Mom just runs. Yeah, you better run.

Do-kyung has the boys take all their equipment to an overlook to record some sounds, and when they stop to take a break he finds a USB in his bag. He plugs it into this laptop to listen — it’s a recording of Hae-young telling him not to record her anymore, and he stops to listen.

He listens to other recordings his equipment picked up — Hae-young talking to the television, eating loud snacks, even farting. He hears her complaining about the door between their apartments, and praying as she lies in bed at night. One of her prayers even involves Do-kyung, a “guy with nice eyes” (truer words were never spoken), and she asks for help bringing him back to himself.

Hae-young’s mom is offended when Hae-young’s aunt implies that she shouldn’t come to her cousin’s wedding, and mentions that everyone is wondering about her broken engagement. She’s obviously fishing for gossip, but she crosses a line when she suggests that maybe it wasn’t Hae-young who called things off.

Mom starts taking her apron and sweater off — oh it is ON. Dad desperately tries to calm Mom, even attempting to physically hold her back, but Mom just gives Auntie this frightening, calm smile.

She tells Auntie that Hae-young might be bringing a man to the wedding, and that he’s quite stunning – he will probably even make her future son-in-law look pathetic. Dad even chimes in that he’s the CEO of his own company, so cute.

That night Do-kyung listens while Hae-young accepts her delivery pizza and calls out for her “honey,” like she always does. He heads through the door and grabs the pizza like he belongs there, and Hae-young’s face is priceless.

She quickly hides her laundry and explains that she only does that so they won’t know she lives alone, asking him not to misunderstand. Do-kyung says he’ll move the cabinet from in front of the door… you know, so she can escape if a weirdo does push his way in.

He goes back to his side and this time brings her a lamp, so she won’t keep whacking her shins in the dark. It’s only because she’s noisy, and it’s an old lamp anyway. Riiight. He goes back to his side again, and declines when Hae-young asks if he wants any pizza.

She lies in bed that night smiling at her lamp, knowing instinctively the real reason he gave it to her — because he cares.

COMMENTS

It’s so lovely that Do-kyung isn’t fighting his feeling for Hae-young (much), or pretending they don’t exist, and even goes out of his way to take care of her. His motivations are a bit difficult to decipher but I do think that most of his hesitation is because of how he wronged her, and not because his ex-fiancee suddenly reappeared. In fact, I think it’s amazing that her showing up isn’t shaking him as much as I expected. As many dramas as I’ve seen, I’m conditioned to expect characters to act certain ways when certain things happen, and I love that this show doesn’t have its characters behaving in any way other than what’s natural to them. In any other drama I would expect Do-kyung to think he’s obligated to go back to his ex, but here he really wants nothing to do with her. I think, if she just quietly went away, he would be fine with that.

I really appreciate how all of our character act and react like normal people, and not like stock drama characters. One of my favorite traits about our Hae-young is how she easily calls out awkward moments, like when she could tell Do-kyung was scared she’d see his birthday gift as something special. She knows it is and doesn’t let him get away with pretending it’s not, and she’s done that sort of thing consistently since they met, like when she yelled at him for wrist-grabbing her, or teased him for being scared they might sleep together when he tried to have her kicked out. It’s in line with her personality to lay the truth right out there, and it serves a double purpose of not allowing Do-kyung to hide behind his taciturn personality or reluctance to show that he cares. I get the feeling, even though he’s the one who always gets found out, that Do-kyung actually likes that about Hae-young and it’s a big reason he’s falling for her. She knows what he’s thinking and isn’t afraid to hang a lantern on it, even if it’s uncomfortable, so he’s forced to face the way he feels.

What Do-kyung’s mother did, stopping his wedding so she could continue to take money from him, is nothing short of sick. I’m literally nauseated just thinking about a mother who would do that to her child. As many terrible mother-in-laws I’ve seen in dramaland, Do-kyung’s mother has to be one of the worst, because at least all of those chaebol mothers genuinely think they’re doing what’s best for their child. Do-kyung’s mom not only used her son, but she tormented the woman he loved so horrifically that she left him on their wedding day without a word. There’s nothing in that that could be justified as “for his own good,” not even in a twisted way. It’s sick and evil, and I was truly shocked when I realized what she did and why. I already thought she was a terrible mother and an opportunistic gold-digger, but I never expected this.

It’s no wonder the other Hae-young fled the wedding to avoid becoming her daughter-in-law. Aside from her basic personality (which still doesn’t impress me, the way she treats our Hae-young) and the brief worry about a fatal illness, I’ve always felt that Hae-young probably had a good reason for leaving, and escaping someone who is literally stalking and viciously attacking you, mentally and physically, is a pretty valid reason. I can even understand why she didn’t stop to talk to Do-kyung first, for fear that he’d talk her out of it. What I can’t excuse is a year of no contact, no explanation, not even attempting to reach Do-kyung to tell him why she left. Unless there’s something on that recording to explain otherwise, there’s no excuse for treating a person so hurtfully.

That’s not to say that I don’t feel a lot of compassion for the other Hae-young, now that we’ve seen what Do-kyung’s mother put her through. She truthfully held up very well for as long as she could, and whatever was on that recording, it must have been pretty bad to tip her over the edge. Do-kyung’s mother hinted that it was proof that he didn’t love her, so I’m really curious to hear what he said and how Mom twisted it to sound bad enough to make Hae-young disappear for over a year. I think there’s a lot more to this story, and the truth may sway Do-kyung for a bit, but I trust that his feelings for our Hae-young are growing strong enough that the other Hae-young won’t pose a true threat to their relationship.

His mom is the most vile drama character I've ever encountered. Worse than the guy I so hated in I Hear Your Voice. Everything about her is just sickening. From the way she dresses to how she smirks and throws a tantrum.

Ok that dude was a literal multiple-murderer and a creepy stalker so that's a bit extreme.

However I would put her just shy of the evil mother in Bachelor's Vegetable shop who kicked an old woman's heart pills away from her hand as she was dying of a heart attack and then made her dead daughter's best friend (a child) pose as her daughter so as to get back with her rich lover. And that lady was crazy enough she tried to run Ji Chang Wook down with her car WITH WITNESSES RIGHT THERE.

She's far too immature to be a mom, and I so glad that none of her children inherited her bad traits! I mean, look at how responsible her three children are, and I swear I love them more for still treating her well despite her crazy antics.

Great episode this one.

The Mom turned out to be not just bratty but actually kind of evil. To his own son. Plus the actress is doing either a good job or a bad job - but she is on my s&*t list. (I say this about her acting because her face twitches are kind of outrageous.. )

But, did you feel the loneliness and disappointment on second OHY's face when out OHY turned her down for that drink. I felt really bad for her. She was clearly very tortured. I wonder what happened just the day before the wedding. I am so mad at the mother.

But, the nice cute moments of care shown by PDK are just too darn cute. I am loving them moments.

I find the drama interesting not just because of cute stuff and how fresh the topic is. It is a different perspective.

I am not shipping - but I hope the two OHYs become besties.

I think the Mom actress is doing a really amazing job. For five episodes I've been writing her off as a manipulative, histrionic but overall kind of frivolous woman, but the way she went after Pretty Hae Young is actually really scary. Her entire voice, her speech patterns, her posture, everything - she became very frightening.

It's especially spooky because if Pretty Hae Young described the situation to anyone, they'd view it through the sillier disguise Mom wears most of the time. It's possible even Do Kyung dismissed her concerns, telling her just to brush off Mom when she gets shouty. But that is not the kind of shouty you can ignore.

The acting in general is very good. All the side characters despite cartoonish behavior are very grounded and real. I was not at all surprised at the depth the Mom actress showed.

I'm actually quite impressed by the acting of the mother. Her dialogue delivery, her voice , Her pitch changed with each line.

Epsecially when Soo Kyung talked about 3rd marriage look at her reaction and listen the voice. I was like WOW This is some Real acting.

Great scene between Mother and Elder sister of Park Do Kyung.
Talk started between mother and Daughter but turned into Mother and Sister fight.

"But, did you feel the loneliness and disappointment on second OHY’s face when out OHY turned her down for that drink. I felt really bad for her. She was clearly very tortured."

She looked like someone kicked her puppy.

... But this whole thing makes me wonder about her and pdk's relationship ... she said that knew all the details about her messed up family ... so it was not a superficial i-am-the-happy-sexy-girl relationship

given how he is, i'm guessing he would have been extra perceptive and protective about her

... so how did he not know that his mom was abusing her - verbally and physically! bec there is no way he would have let that slide ... when she's already told him about the family, then why couldn't she go to him with the recording

there was communication, understanding and trust ... but now enough of it ?????

i just don't get it given how caring he is about our ohy who is practically a stranger to him

Probably because it's his mom she'd be talking about?
Other OHY's got a messy family background, and to me it seems like she's the type of person to whom families are sacred. Families ARE sacred, in my opinion. But the way OtOHY laps up being in the same company with Soo-Kyung just makes me feel like she has an actual shrine in her room that says 'FAMILY' with pictures of everyone in PDK's family.

Oh god, kinda like how Luna Lovegood painted Harry, Hermione, Ron, Neville & Ginny's faces up on her ceiling.

Anyway, by telling him that his mom is a money-crazy actual psychopath, she'd be putting PDK & Mom's relationship at risk. Family is sacred, remember? So I guess OtOHY just decided not to do that. Be the bad guy, run away for a year, maybe come back when she feels like it...

I suppose I'm stating the obvious, but to me it seems that the Other OHY is also very lonely at her core. It's not just because she's failing to re-attract PDK. I believe she only had and has superficial relationships. She's pretty on the outside, making people immediately like her without needing to get to know the real her deep down. It's probably hard for her to open up to people. You know, it's like "What if people know what a mess I actually am?"Yet, she opened up to PDK. PDK to her was what PDK is to Our Oh Hae Young.

She was surprised that Our OHY has already known about how she dumped PDK. And her vanity that PDK only went for Our OHY because how she reminds him of herself shows how egocentric she is (apart from name, age, the data on their IDs, YOU GUYS ARE WORLDS APART! DON'T FLATTER YOURSELF, OTHER!).
That one guy that she opened up to had moved on to another girl and has already shared private, intimate information with that new girl. It's probably tearing her apart how she's not That Special to PDK after all, the guy who's her sky and earth.

Oh god now I'm feeling so sorry for Other OHY that I could cry.

Plus whatever in the recording made Other OHY thought PDK didn't love her.
WHAT IS IT THOUGH? I GOTS TO KNOW!

im late with this but this is actually a great read on Other OHY and her relationship with PDK as well. and yeah i'm so impressed with the writing in this drama cuz in one episode i went from cool indifference re: other OHY to intense sympathy and anger on her behalf.
now I honestly want the two OHYs to be friends. which i guess is far fetched. but the revelations about her past and true character (which i hope we continue to get more of) explain alot about her behavior, painting it in an entirely different light. She wasnt being Fake or even necessarily Oblivious she is so desperate for love and true connection (its prob been a long shitty year for her i bet) and thus she went full force ahead at the first two familiar faces she saw: Soo Kyung and our OHY. She def didnt go about it in the best way but, now that I GET why she did what she did and does. everything is alot more interesting and layered now.

i just love this drama! i was rly worried they would go Kim Sam Soon with it but instead it was totally diff (and brilliant) the actual track they went down narratively.
there are so many lonely and heart sick characters in our main cast now, and i just want everyone to find their love and be happy gosh! ;_;
Regardless of what it means for the OTP, I hope other OHY and PDK get to have their closure.. both of them deserve that much. and PDK's mom deserves to be thrown into a volcano. what a horrid creature!

I've wanted the two OHYs to be friends ever since I heard the premise for the drama. Or, at the very least, frenemies. I feel like the story set-up at this point may make it hard, but the characters have done such a great job of surprising me that I can't help but hope...

I don't know how the recording could've convinced her that DK didn't love her. Her leaving clearly teared him apart. How could she see him in such an emotional state and think that his feelings weren't genuine?

I think we're assuming that the recording is of DK saying something incriminating, but I think it might actually be of Pretty Hae Young revealing something that would have made it impossible (in her mind) for DK to love her.

That's what DK's mom meant when she said that, and that's why HY left.

I think I miss something here, or maybe it's some kind of Paradox.
So, Other Hae-young left him because of that recording (of him no loving her), then why she came back? Maybe she found that that recording is false? If she left him at their wedding day because she thought he didn't love her, it doesn't make sense coming back after one year and try to get him back...I'm confused here. Please help.

I wished pretty OHY will go back to MC if it's real life though. I want her to have happy ending. Also, being pretty could have a bad side as well Like having stalker, rapist and bully. she have a sad parent too but she seems to be attacking a bit to OHY after hearing that they were dating.

I don't like OHY's attitude. It seems that she hates humiliation no.1 and uses other to make her feel better ! It feels like she is bad but i find one Of her trait that is good it's the behavior;it makes her looks cute.

I kind of love that his mother is a vicious narcissist. I mean, she's a terrible person and I'd hate to have her anywhere near me, but I don't think I've ever seen this character on a K-drama before and that's worth noting. She's manipulative and horrible and seems frivolous, but the way she went after Pretty Hae Young was actually quite scary, not silly at all. It's also interesting that Soo Kyung is BEYOND over her mom, so I wonder what that backstory is - and this also explains a little about why SK isn't ripping Pretty HY's hair out on sight. She already suspects her mom drove PHY off.

But what I like most of all is that I get the impression that our HY would not take this from Scam Mom. I think we're getting a hint of it in how she interact with Soo Kyung, and how Soo Kyung kind of likes her for it: our Hae Young fights back in a way that's a little petty and not particularly gracious, but hell, she fights. At the very least I think she'd tell Do Kyung exactly what's happening. I can't wait until she finds out how much money Mom's gotten out of Do Kyung - that last transfer was $50k if I'm doing the exchange right, and it's the thirteenth one? Has mom actually gotten half a million dollars out of her son?

Agree! I can understand this mom than most other harassing mother-in-laws. I mean belittling you son's girlfriend or wife because you love your son to much? Never could follow that logic. But driving away the fiance for your own selfish reasons? Makes a lot more sense to me!

Also our HY would make just as big as a scene as mom because she would rather be humiliated than lose. And she said that over a scarf, so over Do Kyung whom she loves she would definitely push back. Plus she wouldn't be afraid to tell him either.

Honestly, she's kinda like my mom. But not really THAT evil. She asks money from me every time. I remember one time, she took my Christmas bonus and left nothing to me. That scene when PHY was embarassed by DK's mom in public and talks to her with a loud voice inside the office, and even follows her shouting like that - it's so similar to my mom's personality. She also interferes with my relationships. But she's not against it all the time.

Wow through that calculation of cost, that is a damn lot of money. You'd wonder why Soo Kyung is furious at seeing her. She's basically treating Do Kyung like a bank. It makes me wonder too, did the mom do something that also damaged Soo kyung's relationship? Since at her age she still isn't married and is living with her brothers, that must hint something happened in the past.

Now all I imagine is Our Hae Young facing off the mom in a epic battle of words lol

oh yes, I love that this drama is refusing to couch Mom's essential nastiness as being motivated by love of her son even as she herself insists that it is. And I love that Soo-kyung is the one to call her on it and stand up for Do-kyung, and even defend other Hae-young a little.

Mom is like a kdrama version of Dolores Umbridge - all frivolous on the outside, but completely poisonous just under the surface. I really don't think there's any wiggle room for her, she's just a straight-up selfish narcissist like you said.

Required fields are marked *

Completely agree with each and every word. Sometimes, even if they are relationships you want to maintain and not burn bridges, there;s no use in keeping quiet and hoping that your silence would speak words. You have got fight dirty and be ugly for people to see sense, and our Hae-young is exactly like that. The number of times she has made her classmates shut tp with one word is ample proof.

Also, we are forgetting that Our Hae-young has an equally strong mom who totally would go on a warpath if her daughter was being treated like that. I do remember Do-kyung's Mom taunting the Other Hae-young that her mother wouldn't even bother. Obviously said with venom, but maybe there was a grain of truth in that, but something makes me think that if Other hae-young had a support system to fall back on like Our Hae-young had, she wouldn't have had to go through this.

Maybe that's the one thing Other Hae-young can never have what Our Hae-young has. A set of supportive parents and a good friend who sends away a hot date to listen to your vows. Maybe all the friends Other Hae-young made were thrown off by her obliviousness and/or her "aura of beauty" which apparently all men would find irresistible.

I agree. I remember watching that episode when PHY first met OHY and mentioned that she thought about her and her mom it made me wonder why she specifically mentioned the mom. It must've been because OHY's mom made such an impact on PHY and she was envious of that love and support.

I got the sense that she told those drunken stories about OHY's mom not to just poke fun but because witnessing a mother fight so ardently for her daughter was a memory that just stuck with PHY after all those years.

Tbh as much as I love OHY the girl for all her quirks and eccentricities, and while she is pretty sassy a lot of times, it does gets on my nerves a bit when she gets on passive aggressive mode. I do understand where she's coming from though but still, girl, I know you are more capable of just angry glaring and then mouthing off about someone behind their back! Like her bff said, I think this is OHY's worst habit (her rambling).

Also I understand not liking ohy2 as a character but still I'm wary of those she must be a bitch sentiments/second female lead dislike. I feel like the show is trying to...play on our perspectives? NOT that this means it was ok for someone to run away on their wedding day though.

That said, I do get why her personality can be annoying, although I think a commenter's said that ohy2, despite being popular and a rather friendly girl she has issues with being able to handle people being negative to her and so she gets on the socially offensive. I don't think she really knows how to deal with her emotions either, like her saying that she cries while smiling at the same time.

To be honest, I really feel like I'm enjoying the show because of Eric + Seo Hyun Jin's acting rather than because of the plot, because some aspects of the set up and like...being a noble idiot isn't cute.

Here's the thing that makes a difference for me though. The reaction that Our Hae-Young and DK have when tropes like the wrist grabbing come up show that the writer is saying the tropes aren't acceptable. Look at DK he refuses to accept anything less than death as an excuse for running away. The tropes/cartoonish behavior that we see on the surface level are like the candy coating for a much deeper filling of melancholy/real human emotion.

-Exactly!

I may be getting my hopes up, but I want this drama to subvert a lot of our expectations going forward. In this drama, yes, there is noble idiocy. BUT...it's the second leads that commit it.

I don't want this drama to skirt over what the separation did to these couples. What I hate about noble idiocy is that the victims of it are always required to play catch-up with what their partner went through, while telling themselves that the thoughts and emotions they felt in reaction to what their partner did don't mean as much because, oh, they were lying and, oh, they had their reasons. You can't just reverse actions and the emotions they caused because you have knowledge of the reasons behind them. I certainly want them to make amends with their former partners, but I really hope the drama doesn't entertain getting back together with them too much.

This drama focuses so much on the strong bond forming between our leads that I can't help but hope we continue to explore how their relationship is going to unfold differently, even with everything that stands between them.

I don't accept noble idiocy in the case of our Hae Young's former fiancée. His break up words were too cruel. He was saving his own pride by hiding his failures. He could have called off the wedding by admitting his financial and legal troubles had jeopardized his confidence in their future. Instead he put the burden on her- she wasn't good enough to love forever, she was unbearable to look at. So cruel to attack someone you supposedly love like that. If he wanted her to move on, he could have placed the blame on himself. I'm not good enough. Instead he said, "you're not good enough." Did he even imagine the wound he was making?

0

OHY's fiancee probably knew that he had to place the blame on her to make her leave. If he said he wasn't good enough for her, knowing her personality, she would've demanded answers from him.

0

To be honest, I think we all have a little passive aggressiveness in us. Meaning, there are just times when we'd ramble badly about someone either to ourselves or to others rather than confront the offender directly. I don't care if you're really that confident or straightforward, there are just times when direct confrontation just isn't worth it that day or we're just too beaten down by life to do so. I think it's this specific flaw that makes her relatable to the every woman.

That said, I actually find myself sympathizing with the other OHY, too. Now that I know her background with her unstable family who doesn't seem to care much about her, with DK's mom, it seems like she's overcompensating for all of those circumstances by appearing to have it together and be happy all the time. DK is right in that she can't go around blaming others for her own actions, though. It was just wrong to cut him out of her life with no explanation whatsoever, assuming that his relationship with his mom is more important than their relationship together.

It's a common reaction for kids without support systems to build a "happy" persona to avoid processing bad feelings. They feel alone all the time because of something outside of their control. It becomes easier to deny feeling sad (smile through the tears) then process things.

Yeah, which is why I said I understood where Oh Hae Young is coming from. It's just honestly isn't an attractive thing to watch someone acting out like that- whether irl or on tv. Even tho I do love Hae Young and even if we all have passive aggressive tendencies. I feel like her mouthing off does come a lot from her passive aggressiveness too, because she *doesn't* know how to deal with it because of her confidence issues. Hopefully she becomes a better person after meeting DK and experiencing growth.

Hi, ohyagain!

I don't think that OHY is passive-aggressive so much as powerless. I cringed when the Big Boss singled her out at the party -- long before she hollered at NOHY to leave her scarf on. Big Boss assumed that Assistant Mgr. Oh might not grovel enough to the new hire. Way to set your self-fulfilling prophecy in motion, boss man.

OHY has been put down her whole life at school and work. The social hierarchy being what it is, the game is rigged against her and others like her (i.e., third-tier losers). She has to pick her battles carefully, and even then, her chances of getting vindication are slim to none.

I don't blame her one bit for grumbling in private or with friends. It is a very human thing to do, albeit a waste of energy. But I'd rather see her crabbing to herself at home than drinking herself under the table.

Sometimes, the only thing you can do is holler to let the rest of the world know you exist. So long as you can avoid a pyrrhic victory... The alternative, as they used to say in the 60s, is "Eat s*** and die."

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Actually, she's fairly optimistic in each episode since she does pick herself back up and try again. It's this endearing spirit that evens out her lowest lows. She doesn't remain stagnant, so I guess that's why her rants don't bother me that much. No, she doesn't have it all figured out yet, but witnessing her growth is part of the storytelling, so have some patience? I also don't think she's passive aggressive in a manipulative, or spineless kind of way. She has an inferiority complex, even DK has his. So yes, maybe by being together they'll grow into better people. That's what we're all rooting for afterall.

How are we supposed to support this new couple when we know there are innocent people suffering on the side? The only thing we can charge the exes with is noble idiocy in the 1st degree, which in their cases was probably a fatal mistake since they could not trust their relationships enough to rely on their respective partners.

I think maybe we're going to learn that once feelings die (even if that reason is wrong) you can't force them to revive again. You're right, I think that No Hae Young is pretty sympathetic and we know that ex-fiance is also a sympathetic character. What will see us through, I think, is the fact that both Do Kyung and our Oh Hae Young can be honest and open with each other. Which is what both ex-fiance and ex-fiancee failed to do by breaking things off with their respective soon to be spouses without any real, true explanation.

Ugh...this is so true! Lola is right that they are frank in a way they aren't with others but the longer Do Kyung holds on to the awful secret, the worse it gets.

Do Kyung, I think, is probably sticking to his broken bird motif. So he thinks he can sort of help and support Our Hae Young till she gets back on her feet. And he was also trying to undo the legal mess around her fiance (though didn't the fiance reject (rightly) the help offer?)

So once she get's sorted out, he bows out of her life and no one is the wiser. I don't think he's being diabolical but he probably just can't get himself tell the truth and face the wrath of a girl he definitely is falling for. ugh...it's a definite mess.

I think you have to separate intention and fallout. Yes, Do Kyung did throw a wench in the ex-fiancee's business deal out of revenge. He didn't expect or imagine how the dominos would fall. But every additional consequence was a result of someone else's decision. Each investor made a decision for themselves and the ex- fiancée made his own decisions about his marriage and break up. It is aggravating that in dramas characters either accept too much of the blame or avoid accepting any at all. He didn't make her fiancée dump her and ruin her wedding. He stopped one investor from giving someone money. Yes, he feels guilty because his misunderstanding directed his action towards an innocent party. He is responsible for that one action.

0

Required fields are marked *

I love Do Kyung's character but to say he only did the one thing is wrong. 1) His step-father-to-be was Tae Jin's biggest investor which he knew. 2) Do Kyung and Jin Sang set out to DESTROY Tae Jin as pay back. Maybe they didn't expect him to end up in jail. But they knew it would ruin him and affect his intended marriage. That was their intent. Yes the result was a little bigger than they expected, but their intention was not the one thing. It's like setting fire to one item in close proximity to a gas tank, and then saying you are only responsible for the one item when the whole house burns down. He should feel guilty for all of it. He ruined lives. And trying to downplay his responsibility is unacceptable.

1

I love the fact that they're all sympathetic, it makes them all so much more realistic and relatable. Since in reality everyone has their side of the story not told. Yay for more feels to come!

0

Required fields are marked *

Exactly what I was thinking. I am totally invested in this drama and every single character has been given life that made them sympathetic that I can honestly ship our two leads. Greater problems will truly come once the ex-fiance is released.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I too felt conflicted when I watched this episode. As much as I ship the lead couple to bits, it makes the other Hae Young more sympathetic because technically she was coerced into leaving with the psycho mom's terrorizing and threats. Same goes for our Oh Hae Young's ex who was almost "wronged" by DK. So right now it's almost difficult to imagine how both DK and our Hae Young will not feel compelled to go back to their exes after realising they left them for good reason, but of course the lack of communication both exes subjected them to is the only thing that is inexcusable. But I'd like to believe that their growing romantic feelings for each other are enough to make them realise they're so much more compatible together, and that this is the present. That they missed the moments with their exes but something better awaits for them with this new relationship!

0

Required fields are marked *

You know what though I people are making a mistake seeing it as Noble idiocy. here's the harsh truth Other Hae-Young ran because she was to afraid to fight and tae-Jin ran because he was ashamed of his own actions. The feeling I get from the writing and acting is that no one will forgive/forget that easily. If the writer has any balls Our Hae-Young and DK will not be moved by either of the exes. I think the casual ruining of her life will be a much worse issue. It also makes a lot more sense now that we've seen a bit more of DK moms sensibility.

Everyone makes mistakes in life but marriage is no joke. Couples are often forced to weather 'storms' throughout their lives together.

If your first instinct is to break up or back away when the going gets tough, those feelings are probably an indication that this might not be the right life partner for you. Cuz life is hard.

Ugh, Do Kyung's mother, you suuuuuuuuuck! I'm so angry. What a terrible, toxic woman. Why is it that Hoon and Noona don't seem to be considered her children? I mean she ignored Hoon at the studio when she brought the director around, and she ran away from her daughter (or tried to). It's clear she's a mother in name only, and only sees Do Kyung as her bankroller (so she only 'mothers' him). Ugh, hate!

I'm feeling more sympathy for No Hae Young this week but still don't particularly like her. I just don't want her to be tortured by that horrible woman. I really think unless that recording is pretty damning that No Hae Young should've talked to Do Kyung or never gone back. There's something about her behaviour that I recognise but that makes me unfortable and a bit angry. She tries to use social niceties as a way of avoiding dealing with the uncomfortable things. Like pretending with Noona that they're just old acquaintances/friends and ignoring the wrong she did Do Kyung. Or pretending to be buddy, buddy with Oh Hae Young at work because it provides a veneer of good cheer. Even seeming to avoid an argument with Do Kyung (going to his apartment) when he starts yelling at her.

What I'm starting to think is that she actually has absolutely no ability to deal with confrontation, accept responsibility for her actions. She seems to think she can gloss over the bad stuff.

Which is exactly opposite of how our Oh Hae Young deals with stuff. Our OHY may embarrass herself on the regular, she may act badly, but she takes responsibility for her actions, acknowledges them and apologises when necessary.

It seems like No Hae Young maybe never learned how to do that. Which makes sense, given her blessed social life. But it is infuriating for people who've been done wrong by her in some way.

I like your analysis of Other Hae Young. I've been thinking for a while now that what Other Hae Young is most guilty of is complacency, as exhibited by that elevator scene in which Our Hae Young was shoved out by the men to make room for them and Other Hae Young. (I think) Other Hae Young knew what was going on, but she didn't step in to call out the men for their rude behavior. But then I couldn't help thinking, in real life, how many people would actually step up to the plate like that, and on a consistent basis too? I know we like our drama characters to be clearly good guys, but if this weren't a drama, would Other Hae Young be as dislike-able as we viewers find her?

Anyway, this episode highlights that Other Hae Young's biggest flaw seems to be her passivity, rather than any truly "evil" trait. At least it's a step up from your stereotypical second female lead.

That hits so close to home that I'm actually feeling embarrassed.

It's not easy to lay your feelings and anger bare, especially if it comes with a side of closed elevator doors in your face.
It's much easier to put on a fake smile and maintain social niceties without asking too many questions. You get more free things that way.

It's also because you don't want to cause a scene which is what most people try to avoid. If Pretty Hae Young rejected the offer and reprimanded the guys then she would destroy her "nice" image, and also made a ruckus in the lobby. That would lead to a negative domino effect and she wouldn't have all the benefits she has now.

The other Hae Young wants to continue to live in her beautiful bubble of bliss where she feels safe. It is hard to truly love another person if you can not be honest with them. Honest about your insecurities, your troubles and about what you want/need from that person. The second leads are too afraid to expose their true selves to the people they think they love so they run away.

When he saw her over the broken glasses, then texted and waited for her to go back home.. Duh, the feelings! His face so full of his pent up emotions. He fall more and badly under her spells.

Now that the 6 was out, I'm dreading for the heart wrenching episodes before we hit the lovey dovey part sadly they have to climb the mountain and walk through the dark forest first. Hope my heart would be strong enough to watch their journey..

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip~!!

What I absolutely love about this drama is that the male lead goes out of his way to not embarrass the female lead. Because I'm so used to the opposite- male leads going completely out of their way to humiliate female leads in all ways possible. Constantly reiterating to them that they're not rich, pretty, etc., and therefore somehow not "worthy". Of course it's usually when the male leads are trying to convince themselves of this and are already attracted to the female leads, but still, it's absolutely refreshing to have a character who understands that it feels awful to constantly be humiliated, looked down upon and made to feel small, and avoids all those pitfalls. For a moment there I had thought that Do Kyung wouldn't catch Hae Young when she jumped into his arms; purely to see whether he could change anything that happened in his visions (it's interesting that he has never yet managed to change anything that he saw), but I absolutely love that he instinctively reached out anyway. That when she (literally) flew into his arms, she just kept smiling, despite the fact that he didn't keep his bags down for the longest time, because she seemed to trust him so implicitly. Just like in the post-dinner scene where he had no idea what was happened when she ran up to him again, but still followed her instructions, just because she told him to, and because he didn't want to reject her then and embarrass her.

A drama where the leads are genuinely respectful of each other's feelings is a gem. Like Do Kyung takes cognizance of Hae Young's feelings in all their scenes; and the one where he didn't- the wrist grab- she called him out on it. She made him realize and accept the fact that he had treated her like an object in the moment, negated her subjectivity purely to make a point and because he was angry and overwrought, and you could see it hit him, and he apologized. And Hae Young reciprocates in kind in terms of respect. That she apologized after she realized that she had made a mistake in assuming that Do Kyung had been outside the restaurant to go along with her initial set-up was lovely. I love that she didn't assume that it was no big deal and that it was okay because it was win-win for both of them and therefore he should have no reason to be annoyed. I adore that she was sincere in her apology for making him do something he didn't want to do, even if she herself thinks it's helping him as well. I just love their relationship so much; it started out with this utter, soul-crushing misery, easier shared since, and it's growing into something more at such a wonderful pace, with such a gorgeously subtle touch of whimsy, with both leads acknowledging that it would be easy to be attracted to the other.

So true. And I'm realising in this episode that this is a huge point of difference between our leads and No Hae Young. She has trouble recognising and taking responsibility for her actions. I mean she still hasn't properly apologised to Do Kyung for standing her up at the altar. I think she tries really hard to just smooth things over without actually dealing with the wounds that she causes (even unwittingly which I think it must be in our Oh Hae Young's case). Because she never acknowledges and hides behind a smiling, gracious facade those wounds fester and get worse. I feel a bit sorry for No Hae Young.

But I'm really happy our leads keep reinforcing good communication through their interactions. The fact that Oh Hae Young broke his window with the rock was so cringe worthy I was squirming. But the way they both dealt with it, even her demanding to pay for the window was great. They allow themselves to move past the embarassment so that they can continue to be comfortable with each other, which just draws them closer together. Love, love our couple.

I really like that the drama is setting up an interesting psychology behind why No Hae-young has made some of the decisions she's made. Her tendency to smile through the difficult times and avoid confrontation is probably what drove her to run away when things got too rough to gloss over. It's also what caused her to then waltz back in like this. I'd like if the writer explored this more as we find out about her family life. Maybe her tendency to smile through issues started there?

The leads are so fascinating because I feel like they are communicating on so many levels. Heaps more than they did with their past partners. And yet, this huge, monumental secret lies between them all the time. To bear your soul to someone, only to have such a horrible revelation shake your trust in that person...

I'm so nervous to see how our leads tackle this. Because, I too, love them so.

It's like with every bump they hit, in the end they both become better connected through it.

When Do Kyung's mom mentioned No Hae Young's past, it makes me wonder did her parents multiple marriage and having step siblings affect her ability to cope against things that hurt her? She might've developed instinctive coping mechanisms whenever she feels she is in danger. Like to avoid conflict she's prefers to pretend the issue didn't happen.

I like the dialog where DK's mom asked her if her family even know of her existence at all, and she couldn't even answer that. It was a pretty obvious clue to how she's probably had to fend for herself after her parents divorced, remarried, and had different kids, etc. It seems like maybe even though her parents provided for her, she didn't have a happy home life. So yeah, maybe appearing to be happy and drawing people in with her friendliness was her way to cope with her loneliness. We can obviously see that with her way she's clung onto our OHY, not realizing that our OHY suffered a complex being compared to her all the time. It's a very interesting dynamic and it adds a complex layer to the heroine vs. the ex stock story where it's not just about getting the man. I hope they explore that aspect even more.

The psychology of the show is fascinating. On the surface it all seems cartoonish and over the top with a lot of tropes. However every time the writer/director/actors peel back even a little bit there is so many layers. Every character is motivated and has real emotional depth to them. No one acts because the plot requires it. I love this show so damn much for that.

I felt really bad for OHY as well. I didn't dislike her even before we knew the background, because she never felt villainous to me, just slightly insensitive. She's not good at reading the atmosphere and goes all out in various situations, which just rubs people the wrong way. Like I'm sure she genuinely wanted to take her scarf off in the last episode so people would target Hae Young, but it just made Hae Young feel worse. Besides I don't think she realizes the full psychological pressure that Hae Young went through in high school, because for OHY, it was probably just a few, isolated moments, but for Hae Young, it was pretty much her entire waking existence in high school, which made her displace that onto OHY and dislike her.

And I absolutely agree on OHY's inability to communicate. It feels like she usually tries not to rock the boat, and so she ends up hiding her feelings and catering to the other person, which makes people like her, but also makes her unable to express herself. Do Kyung said he didn't like women who smiled, so OHY forced herself to smile even while crying, while Hae Young, it is presumable, would have told him that her emotions aren't contingent on his wishes. And I think part of OHY's personality is definitely because of her parental situation. Like last episode it seemed like she was mocking Hae Young because of her mother's antics, but now, in retrospect, it seems she was genuinely wistful, that she paid such close attention to it and their relationship because it was something she didn't have, a mother who would come to school to create a fuss because someone hurt her daughter. It's sad.

Although it does seem like this is the kind of show where the two Hae Youngs will eventually build a better understanding, even if they don't become best friends, and I'm looking forward to that!

I have seen a lot comments on Wrist-Grab. I know it is the most common action taken by the hero in Romantic storyline and at times it is annoying.

It is also clear that Director and Writer is trying to dish many cliches and tropes but at the same time using them subtly for their own advantage.

You can feel all happy about Wrist-Grab scene but i didn't felt it demanded such reaction from Ou Oh Hae Young. Initial date setup looked like an attempt to make other Oh Hae Young Jealous but Other Oh Hae Young right away made the point of name causing yet another misunderstanding.

Park Do Kyung happily came to have a proper dinner and was angry and didn't thought much and maybe his other mind tried to make sure Our Oh Hae Young not learns more about the truth.

Hi, CatoCat...

DK walks into the steak house after a long day at work, and is looking forward to dinner with his lady friend -- when he gets ambushed by his ex. He splits pronto, and calls for OHY to shake a leg... but she continues to speak with NOHY.

In my book, about the only time a wrist-grab is warranted is if someone needs to be pulled from a burning building. When DK goes back to fetch OHY, the building IS on fire, metaphorically speaking. ;-)

I don't even think he is trying to hustle her out before she learns any gory details from NOHY. He simply has no interest in expending energy dealing with her, and is just trying to get the hell out of Dodge.

Yeah, it's funny, I love that our Hae-young protested the wrist-grab.

But I also definitely don't think that Do-kyung was trying to put on a show or stop OHY from finding out the truth. I never think wrist-grabs are okay, but I do understand that he needed to get out of that situation as fast as possible. Unfortunately, wrist-grabbing her out of there was pretty much the fastest way when she was standing there in a daze like that. Doesn't excuse him, but I recognize that he wouldn't wrist-grab in most situations.

That's what i am saying that Wrist-grab incident not makes much sense here. It isn't a victory for anyone and as audience it doesn't provide much happiness to me that Heroine stood up against such behaviour of the Hero.

He came there to have dinner and his acquaintance was still mingling with his Pain-of-life and instinctively Do Kyung did that. Get far away from Ms. I-Miss-You as soon as possible.

Later on Our Oh Hae Young do question why Do Kyung didn't tell all this information.
Do Kyung is Why must I? So i thought maybe Inner thoughts of heart took some action too.

Well, I still think I'm glad that she called him out on it. Just because I'm more understanding of his reasons for doing it, doesn't mean I like him doing it. After all, he still forcefully pulled her because of his own emotional distress.

0

i'll second that .. I don't think he was even in the frame of mind to 'plan' making the ex-Girl friend jealous plot. In fact every time OHY comes up with this plan, he shoots her down completely

He basically just wanted to get the hell out of there. I guess if he was with his brother or friend, he would have just driven off. But he couldn't just leave her stranded there .. so he sort of like hustled her along - come on now hurry up! like right now!

Hi! I definitely don't think he had planned to make the other Oh Hae Young jealous through the wrist-grab, but the thing is, he may not have wanted to do it deliberately, but obviously it would have given him some subconscious satisfaction to be able to say "I came here for her, not you", it's only human nature. And I'm just glad they called it out, because it's such a common kdrama trope. In that moment he wasn't thinking of our Hae Young- like, he pulled her away to get away faster, yes, but also to make a point, no matter how subconsciously- so I was happy when she called him out on it. I love his character and these scenes only make me like their relationship more!

I love protective noona Soo Kyung ♥ ♥ ♥
That actress is just killing it across the board.

It's funny how as the show unravels, you realize just how much heartbreak is effecting ALL the characters. We started out think HY and DK we're the only ones suffering, but we've seen how both exes, and even Soo Kyung, are hurting.

I loved the fatal illness fake-out (this PD is sooo good at playing the audience's assumptions). It definitely makes Pretty Hae Young more sympathetic. She and Tae Jin both had "good" reasons for calling their marriages off. But the way they went about ending them was so wrong and I hope the drama keeps doing the unexpected and allows both HY and DK to be angry at them for it.

I'm expecting DK's involvement in TJ's imprisonment to hit the fan soon. I only hope that the show will allow HY and DK to have some more cute moments before then (aaannnddd maybe a kiss, episode 8 is the standard for kdrama first kisses, just saying.)

Well, I wrote a comment on the episode 4 recap that pretty much said the only reason I could understand No Hae-young leaving was because of Do-kyung's horrible mother so I was actually pleasantly surprised the drama went there. I know we deal with manipulative mother-in-laws all the time in dramaland, but I think I like the distinction between a mother who thinks she's doing right for her son and one selfish enough not to care at all. This is because I've actually come across these selfish types far more in life. And I've seen how dealing with such demanding people can suck the life out of a family.

I also think I'm right about OHY2 envying OHY1's family situation. I think when she drunkenly talked about Our Hae-young's mom, it was genuinely because she was fond of her, not because she looked down on her family. I still don't think this changes the fact that she needs to be more sensitive to what she puts others through. The pain she dealt Do-kyung definitely doesn't go away just because of what she went through.

I think you might be right about OHY2 envying OHY family situtaion. Just the way she goes about it is kind of overbearing and insulting for OHY. No Hae Young doesnt' seem to be able to deal with conflict well, probably because she never had to and could get away with pretending everything was okay with a smile.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yes! I'm totally with you. This is exactly my thought after seeing episode 5.

Other Hae-young has no support system (no family!!!) and she's genuinely incapable of dealing with conflict. This is a flaw that is real and believable one grounded in the shitty family life/growing up beloved by many but having to hide her pain.

Every time she tries to connect with someone she has to do it the way everyone else has with her. A superficial way that doesn't really work beyond a certain level. I'm got this huge suspicion that DK was the first person to reach out to her beyond all that. When her relationship with him was threatened she couldn't deal with it and ran. Not very mature but truthfully understandable.

I don't feel more sympathetic to her but I certainly understand.

Required fields are marked *

I agree about Do-kyung. I think that his fixation on sounds has made him someone that places less importance on the superficial and that focuses more on the words and sounds he hears. He clearly appreciated OHY2's beauty like everyone else, but that never became the focal point for him, which probably made her appreciate him a lot as a result. Sometimes just having someone who feels like they're really listening to you and who shows that they care about who you really are makes all the difference. OHY2 probably felt a lot more comfortable speaking freely around him. It's too bad that his ability to listen didn't make her feel safe enough to share her issues with him.

Mom's anger scenes are hilarious.. I can imagine in far future oh hae young lashing out similarly and do-kyung calming her.. Hehe

This made me notice when I moved out to another city my dad was super cautious about safety and even checked the neighborhood several times...
My mom usually brings half prepped food so I'll cook in home and not eat outside... I always thought it was something every parent would do.. But this drama made it special for me (though the cleaning part is other way around cuz I'm a clean freak)
I envied my school friend because he had so much money to spend and go on trips while I was always on short of it and blamed my parents... Now it seems immature because I wouldn't trade my parents for all the money in the world.. I realized this before too but this drama make me appreciate them more for all the little things they gave me which I never felt it as a special thing..

DK's mom is horrible. I wonder what's on the recording that I guess really let her decide ro leave. After seeing his premonition, I've been anticipating about why HY broke his window and muttered Oh no! She knows already!. Wonderful display of friendship too. How they've admitted that although they're friends there are things that they cannot say to each other but doesn't make her less of a friend or best friend. And how she ushered her boyfriend out for her bestie.

I also want to think that Pretty HY is so much aware of what HY is going through because of her.

Oh dear, the feelings this episode though. I can hardly believe it's episode 6!

I definitely felt Hae-young's anger at the recording, especially since everyone should be allowed to have moments to voice their innermost feelings. Obviously, I forgive Do-kyung because he kept the recording going without consciously thinking about the fact that he has a new neighbor that isn't quite as quiet as him. But it's just so frustrating when someone becomes privy to thoughts and emotions that you, yourself, haven't gotten used to.

Having her feelings out in the open, though, is only going to make it that much harder for him to resist. It already compelled him to listen to the rest of her recordings (really?! everything dude?!), which I am only letting slide because it's clear he couldn't resist his desire to hear all her ramblings. He is such a goner already with the way he's instinctively acting like a boyfriend. I don't think I've ever seen two leads fall so effortlessly into courtship. That said, I can't say I blame him for trying to distance himself when their past is such a mess.

This show is going to drive me mad with waiting. I don't mind going mad though because SK noona is awesome. Awesome and completely crazy in the best way possible. Which is how this show makes me feel.

See, that listening to the recording totally was swoon worthy. There is this dialogue in Good Will Hunting where Robin Williams is describing what he misses most about his deceased wife to Matt Damon. He says little idiosyncrasies are what you miss instead of grand gestures and perfect moments, the little things. When Do Kyung was listening to the recordings as wrong that is, it spoke volume for where his heart is leading him. He is listening to her small moments, her embarrassing moments yet he wants to know more. I see a real emotional bond forming there. It definitely is more intimate in a way than with others.

Oh, I was definitely swooning. It really is the ultimate declaration of love, wanting to get to know someone, even if it means listening to them in their most unappealing, unguarded moments. I agree that doing all these little things for her as a result pretty much shows us where his heart is heading, even if he'll try and fight it.

Funny story: My first boyfriend was actually named Eric. And our first meeting was him coming around a corner and catching me talking to myself, lol. We got into a funny conversation after that and hit it off. They are very different guys obviously, but I thought the connection was funny. I don't think I've ever hit it off quite as quickly with others after that simply because his acceptance of my ramblings made me comfortable around him right off the bat. It's a rare thing.

@Oshi

Nice to meet you too :) I've been loving your comments.
It's interesting. In a narrative sense, I was also worried about having the feelings out in the open already. I'm worried it's going to force Do-kyung into the 'pushing her away' stage too quickly when I'm enjoying the slow-building of connection between them. He has good reason to set boundaries now that he's more aware of the romantic feelings forming on her side. The end of the episode has me feeling optimistic though.

That said, I do actually think the growth of her feelings felt surprisingly natural. Oh Hae-young seems like someone who is actually pretty perceptive of her own feelings early on. Just like how she cuts through the BS in conversation with people, she does this with herself too. This is why I don't consider her feelings any deeper than Do-kyung's. She understands that she's been vulnerable with him in a way she isn't ever with anyone, really. That can lead to a connection forming really fast. The important thing to remember with OHY is that she has no reason to resist falling for him (except for the OHY2 revelation). In fact, I still considered her crush on him to be in its early stages, but the revealing of it took it up to another level simply because they were both forced to address it. While, at first, this worried me, I am definitely interested to see how it affects the story going forward because, for me, at least, it was unexpected.

Oh my God!! That scene when Dokyung talked to Mama Oh thinking she was our Haeyoung was pure gold. I burst out laughing at the absurdity. But then the episode turned into a more serious tone and I have to say I'm impressed with the way this show revealed its twist. When we watched a part of the other Haeyoung and Dokyung's mom's background story, suddenly it all makes sense. THAT's why Sookyung is not 100% angry with the other Haeyoung and maybe that's also why our Haeyoung's family made a lasting memory to the other Haeyoung. I guess the other Haeyoung unconsciously comparing them to her own broken family and she took comfort from other person's acceptance. That maybe she is nobody in her own family, but at least she is still accepted in society and that fact made her ignorant of our Haeyoung's pain and suffering.

And I love that scene when Dokyung listened to all Haeyoung's voice from his recording. It's a perfect mix of adorable, cute, embarassing, and sweet moments. And when he decided to do something according to what he had heard, I melted. Park Dokyung, who gave you permission to be this swoony??

Do Kyung's mom reminds of someone I know personally. She did the same thing except she succeeded in driving the couple apart after the wedding and the birth of 2 kids. Those moms are the worst. Putting their own needs and happiness above their kids. It wasn't only Do Kyung who got hurt. So did So Kyung and Hoon. And most importantly she damaged Do Kyung badly.

I like So Kyung's character. I would love her if I didn't know she abused OUR Oh Hae Young despite the suspicion that the wedding didn't go off because of her narcissistic and manipulative mom.

I am thrilled at the curve ball with the Noh Hae Young's backstory. I'm glad it's not a deathly illness. It was a panic attack triggered by the typewriter. This show continues to impress!

While I am sympathetic with Noh Hae Young's plight, I don't like that she likes to gloss over other people's hurt feelings like it never happened. I get that it's her personality, but I prefer upfront and apologetic so she rubs me the wrong way. I don't hate her. I'm actually sympathetic. I wish she had been more open with Do Kyung. But then we won't have this awesome drama.

I've been wondering if Soo Kyung was evil to our Hae Young to try and make her break in a weird sort of proxy-situation: she acts evil like her mom and sees how much abuse An Oh Hae Young can take before snapping.

It's utterly nonsensical, of course - Hae Youngs aren't interchangeable - but has Soo Kyung been tormenting her to try and find the Hae Young breaking point?

I thought Soo Kyung was tormenting Our Hae Young because her name is the same as No Hae Young. So it's she's taking out the frustration and anger at Our Hae Young, because she just dislikes the name as it reminds her No Hae Young who left Do Kyung at the altar.

I think it's a bit of both - she started off tormenting our Hae-young because she hated the name, but then develops a grudging respect for her (and continues to torment her because, at least subconsciously, it's just as you said - she's trying to find Hae-young's breaking point).

I wonder if its more about the Who dumped Who situation.
Soo Kyung sees both Hae Youngs as the "dumpers"(incorrectly in the case of our OHY) The men, especially her brother, are the people who got dumped. She was also dumped and is experiencing all the pain that goes with it.
She is tormenting our OHY because she can. She really can't do anything to the other OHY. So she is punishing the "dumper" closest to her. Soo Kyung told OHY at one point that she thought OHY's reason for calling off her wedding just one day before was very flimsy.

It feels like the abuse started before the OUR Oh Hae Young called off the wedding. Hence my conclusion that it is because of the name.

Worst. Birthday. Ever.

Is what I would use to describe the whole day for Our Hae Young. Although I did find the parallel of Do Kyung calling her to come home really nice. Now they both accept the fact that this place is their “home”.

I should’ve been more saddened at the conversation between No Hae Young and Do Kyung, but to be honest I think I laughed a bit too much when he mentioned the whole terminal illness trope. Nice go drama at subverting that trope, another brownie point from me. Eric’s acting in this scene was really good, his teary eyes and low growling voice, oomph a man in pain.

However it leads to question what did Do Kyung say which made No Hae Young leave him with no contact. Sure his mother harassed her and such, but if she really trusted and liked Do Kyung wouldn’t she have confided it to him? Would it count as noble idiocy if she leaves him because she didn’t want to damage his relationship with his mother? As others have said communication and trusts are important in relationships. Why couldn’t No Have Young trust and rely on Do Kyung if they were both so deep into the relationship, that they were going to get married. I do hope we get more insights from No Hae Young. Although I’m not fully warming up to her, she has also suffered and is a victim too.

I’m also glad that Our Hae Young rejected the drink invite from No Hae Young. It made me realise that No Hae Young hasn’t appeared in the show with any close female friends, whereas Our Hae Young at least have one dependable girlfriend to rely on. Sometimes that one person can make a difference. Maybe because Our Hae Youngs past is so connected with No Hae Young that somehow she finds that being with her comfortable, like there is a sense of familiarity she can rely on.

Do Kyung’s mum is officially the worse mother this season so far. Though I hope the writer doesn’t just make her just appear money crazy. Right now the mother just appears to be too extremely one sided that I find her hard to be believable. In contrast to the other characters she seems a bit unrealistic. Though now I know where Soo-kyung got her craziness from.

Thanks for the recap!

Marriage, Not Dating did a good job at subverting the evil mother/in-law trope. I hoping this drama will do something similar.

Though, I think DK's mother is a little too one-dimensionally evil to be redeemed.

I was actually thinking about MnD also. Tbh, while I think MnD sacrificed the 2nd lead treatment and focused more on subverting the evil mother-in-law trope, this drama seems to be doing the opposite. We're getting fleshed-out second leads, at the expense of the mom character.

In fact, I'd relate DK's mom in this drama more with Gong Gi-tae's sleazeball dad. These are characters that everyone in the drama acknowledges as horrible, but that still manage to drive the characters that have emotional bonds with the leads to make mistakes/become the 'bad guy' (so Gi-tae's mom & DK's fiance, respectively).

What's refreshing is how the characters react to the mom as they should. Soo-kyung is completely done with her selfish behavior and Do-kyung desperately wants to be. I like that the drama isn't sugar-coating her behavior.

Wow. Mother of the year. And I love that the show faked us out regarding the fatal illness. I feel bad for the other HY for what she went through. But still, DK deserved an explanation as to why she stood him up at the altar. I guess we'll have to wait for the recording to find out what really happened. I just love the relationship between our leads. Like when DK was late in coming home last episode HY asked her to come home already, this time it was DK who asked her to come home and sleep. The way that they care for each other is just heartwarming.

And damn Eric. Why is he so adorable when he is awkward?

Do Kyung's late night text to Hae Young made me squeal. His deep voice....
I love how quietly caring he is to her like how he gave her the night lamp, haha.

I'm glad that the drama didn't go towards the typical fatal illness route and gave us a bit of a twist instead.
I thought Do Kyung's mom was annoying before, but now I really despise her. I hope she gets punished for all her selfish and evil actions.

I love that the characters are more layered than I thought. I was indifferent to Soo Kyung. I was getting tired of her constant drunkenness and messy hair, but I did feel bad for her when it was revealed that she was going through a heartbreak. I'm still waiting for SK and Jin Sang to fall for each other though.

I'm kinda dreading the next big part where our OHY will learn that DK had a hand in ruining her wedding. This part of the story better not get dragged out.

I ship DK and our OHY. Their relationship is just starting...but I really want to see more happy, cute scenes soon before the big reveal.

I find that guys don't realise how the small things they do can easily squeeze our hearts so much. That's the great thing about Do Kyung, he does it all without expecting a return in favour. He just has a good intention and its so aligned with his quiet personality.

Though I do think the quite part might be related to his job. As a sound producer he needs to focus and pay attention to detail. So being more quiet and observant of his surrounding works better for his line of work.

Right on, Nessie!

My husband occasionally mentions something or other from my metaphysical studies... It tells me that he really was paying attention after all. It feels great! ;-)

Actually, I think DK's quiet personality and ability to focus on the nuances of sound are some of the factors that led him into sound production in the first place. And his father's profession as well. His skill set likely includes manual dexterity, pitch discrimination and memory, rhythm, and even 3D visualization (for setting up the mics)... and clerical aptitude for contracts, scheduling, and riding herd on the essential but non-glamorous grunt-work of business.

controlling mother/mother in law is a major turn off for me,
especially when the child didn't knew,

I may take a break from this show,
this feels like a 2nd strike after the drunk investment thing,

I appreciate cute romance and strong female lead but it's one of my habit (that always bother me) is when I think about a drama and all that leave in my head is question mark,

why they don't just talked?
I think most of it bc I start watching C-drama or Tw-drama again and that drama character do asked the question up front and choose to do silly thing,
I'll stick to recap, for about 2 ep,
I don't want to spoiled myself from bias perspective.

and thanks to Lollypip for the recap

All of the characters are understandable, with the one exception of Do Kyung's mother.

There is no "right" or "wrong" per se, but I do see a clear parallel between Other Hae Young and Tae Jin, in that they pushed away their respective partners in noble idiocy, leaving Do Kyung and Our Hae Young emotionally scarred and suffering from what is a complete lack of honesty.

However, Do Kyung and Our Hae Young are different by nature, helping them build an honest, open, easy rapport with each other even after a few encounters. And that's why I'm dreading Do Kyung's big reveal, which may come as a major betrayal to Our Hae Young.

Hi, Jenni...

I hear you about the boozing. It gets to me, also...

However, given that Evil Mom seems to be sociopathic, the emotional fallout for certain characters is severe. Soo-Kyung has been anesthetizing herself for who knows how long. At this time we don't know why her Significant Other left. Did her drinking like a fish drive him away? Or was it Evil Mom or some other factor that ran him off? Is her guzzling strictly post-breakup?

It just occurred to me that SK could have been left waiting at the altar herself thanks to an Evil Mom engineering project. What a depressing thought. But it would explain why SK was so angry with NOHY for standing up her kid brother.

Yess, Soo-kyung's alcoholicism is probably directly co-related to her mom's meddling. But it's not just Soo-kyung's over-the-top drinking that bothers me, Hae-young is almost always drunk/tipsy herself. She was probably drunk for almost half of the first episode. It made me uncomfortable because someone who drinks herself to that point almost everyday is basically an alcoholic. I'd rather she face her problems clearly without the help of booze. I hope the show addresses the severity of alcohol abuse later on, as it shouldn't be used so lightly as it has been thus far.

I'm not ready to label OHY an alcoholic just yet, but she certainly is a heavy drinker, and at risk of progressing to alcoholism. As is just about everyone in Kdramaland, it seems!

It never ceases to amaze me how female drinkers in particular put away so much ethanol. Women's livers are smaller than men's, so capacity should be less than that of a larger male. (Not taking into account differences in enzyme systems, etc.)

The thing with alcoholism is that in the beginning, some drinkers can have amazing capacity... until years of abuse finally undermine the liver's detox capability. Then the drinker can no longer consume as much as previously because of the progression of the disease.

And that's just the physical aspect. The effects on heart, mind, and soul... That's another kettle of fish. (I'm looking at you, SooKyung...)

Habitual drinking to oblivion is one of the tropes I could do without. It trivializes a condition that kills too many individuals and destroys too many families. And it ignores the fact that in the past, alcoholism was a hidden scourge of women owing to shame and denial.

*end rant*

Does it make a difference if they're just drinking beer and not soju? I think beer has less alcohol in it than Soju, but I could be wrong. It's like in that scene of drinking between Our Hae Young and Do Kyung after their destoryed date. Do Kyung was drinking soju, while Our Hae Young was drinking beer. I thought thats a nice distinction between the alcohol difference.

Another scene I noticed was on her birthday when he dropped by, he brought canned beer which I think has a lower alcohol percentage as well? But yea Kdramas alcoholism has made me worried about everyones livers lol

There is no doubt that DK's mother is one of the worse; however, she is that way because everyone allows her to be that way. No one has put a boundary for her. DK although unwilling always gives in to her money demands, OHY didn't disclose the situation to DK, so no wonder the Mother was getting bolder by the minute and then is his sister who had the most insight on the situation; however, she didn't do anything about it at all. Actually considering how passive OHY was, I don't think she would even have stopped the mother from extorting money from DK.

As for OHY disappearance, there are very few explanations that would excuse her behavior. The problem is not her leaving DK, but rather how she did it. I mean who would want to be related to DK's mother? However, the mother was right OHY herself ruined her wedding/relationship with DK. There is no doubt that the mother had ill intentions so whatever was in the recording, should have lost a lot of credibility as taking things out of content usually creates misunderstandings and that was probably what the mother was aiming for. Considering OHY wants to be back in DK's life that probably exactly what happened.

Anyway I find it amusing how the mother pulled that trick, since she doesn't have enough brain cells for that.

No amount of boundary-setting can save you from a sociopath. You can't change them, you can only remove yourself from their presence posthaste.

DK, the eldest son, is being filial. Evil Mom is parasitizing him -- just like warblefly or cattle screwworm.

I would not underestimate Evil Mom. It seems that she'll do anything to get her paws on money.

Good points. No one has ever done anything to check the mother's outrageous behavior. It's no wonder she continues being bad. They are all (Soo Kyung, Do Kyung and pretty Oh Hae Young) equally culpable for how things turned out.

I nearly died laughing when Do-kyung mistook Hae-young's mother for her under the face mask, that scene was brilliant.

Hats off to this show for not going the expected deadly-illness route and even lampshading it in Do-kyung's own dialogue. And double hats off for making annoying, narcissistic mom the reason why the wedding was called off - she seemed like a mere self-centred materialistic twit earlier but she's vicious and terrifying and awful, and I can see why a conflict-avoider like the other Hae-young would reach breaking point and decide she just couldn't live as this woman's daughter-in-law, and go off without alerting Do-kyung about how awful she truly is. But what I can't get behind is her waltzing back into their lives a year later, pretending nothing happened, and still not disclosing the true reason.

which is why I'm glad our Hae-young isn't following that pattern - she lays it all out there, pettiness and all. It's rather amazing to watch a relationship between two adults develop with so much openness/no real mind games - yeah, Do-kyung doesn't want our Hae-young cottoning on to the fact that he cares for her, and she doesn't want him catching on to the fact that she likes him, but now they both have, and they just.....deal with it and keep talking to each other like a pair of normal adults. And we didn't even get the 'pretend relationship' setup, though other Hae-young thinks our two are dating, Do-kyung's still not ok with it. Though there is the major issue of how she still doesn't know he caused her wedding to get broken off. I'd be really impressed if they can get past that hump without a big, makjang-y blowout but then some things are too huge to go past without a blowout.

I love this drama. I love leads's character.
Oh Hae Young, she's really open with her feelings. She falls for Do Kyung deeply and that makes me not worry even Han Tae Jin appears later on. Just like Hee Ran said, she's not like her used to be. It's sad but sweet about her recorded confession and Park Do Kyung didn't do anything to make her feel shame more. What a man!!! She totally became bright after receiving text for the man she likes.

Despite the silly huge mistake that he did in the past, Park Do Kyung is my favorite male lead in korean drama. He listen to Oh Hae Young, he respect her and he try to protect her as much as he can. He try to not fall for her because he knows he did huge mistake.

I just want to see that gold digger trying to pull that purse trick on our HY, she'll def put her n her place! The mom always came off as an immature materialistic manipulative selfish B to me but to know she was a PSYCHO as well to the other HY was something else...! To watch his son have a life with a wife, kids, etc. that would take his precious money away from her, would def make that kind of mom think of creative ways to change that.

Even when it wasnt the sick runaway bride thing, it def was noble idiocy that broke this couple apart. Its no secret to anyone the mom is a golddigger... They say the other HY is smart but shes def not emotionally smart! She seems to be used to only good things happening for her so when something weird happens, she cant really deal with it and it happened with DK's mom situation. He knows her mom is like that so even if that might hurt him, she should have told him instead of thinking he would magically forgive her later or read her mind. It was a great touch tho that the writers kinda joked on the usual illness excuse when the other HY went to his house but I doubt the recording is something about him not loving her because it would be crazy she came back knowing he never loved her. I'mso curious idk how ill wait til next week!

That's how I'd probably spend my own birthday too if it wasn't for my family and friends. Actually, I don't mind just chilling and eating a dinner on my own after a long day at work. Maybe our OHY has a bit of an introvert in her too? Although if a hot man next door asked me to have a drink with him, I'd be like "peace" to being comfortable like she did too.

I also think the recordings are a bit intrusive, especially since he promised that he doesn't listen to them, and then kind of went back on his word. The motive is kind of sweet since he's returning her feelings, but at the same time, he has the upper hand of knowing her most private thoughts which sits a bit weird with me. Just because their feelings are mutual doesn't mean it's okay to read her like an open book without her permission. It won't be Kdrama without the male lead ruggedly infringing on the female lead's personal space.

Wow wow WOW! This show is pure magnificence. Usually with dramas I have one or two favorite episodes that standout but with this show, each episode is a gem of its own. This episode, especially, is packed with so much good stuff.

Here are some notable moments:

1. OH Hae Young’s bestfriend setting aside her special plans for the night to accomodate Hae Young. You know your friendship is real when you don’t let a guy come in between you.

2.The moment when mama Oh’s defending why it’s okay if their daughter is single and daddy Oh’s like “She reminds me of myself before I met you”. awwww. I would totally watch a spinoff series on the story of these two. The main leads could be Seo Hyun Jin and Yeon Woo Jin :D

3. The real reason why the ‘other’ Oh Hae Young didn’t show up in the wedding. The show really baited me during the end of Episode 5 and its preview. I really thought they were gonna give us that whole ‘because she’s sick’ sort of thing. Good one show. I fell for it. But thank you show, for delivering and surprising us with an uncliche and intriguing reason. There’s really more to a person than what’s seen on the surface. And I find myself sympathizing with her and cheering her on…well at least for a healthier mental health and perhaps even a happy ending (but maybe not with Do Kyung). Other Oh Hae Yong, fighting indeed!

4. Do Kyung’s sound recording as mementos. I was pondering upon why Do Kyung records sounds of his house, certain spots, etc. It is not just because of his job. I believe that it’s similar to how we photograph/videotape events as a way to keep memories. And I find that so interesting (that I actually want to try it for myself). I know I’ve said this before but I really appreciate how the show integrates sounds in such a refreshing way to enhance the story.

Thanks LollyPip for the recap!

Loving DK and our HY relationship. Especially, the way DK talks to her (no more formalities). This just proves how comfortable he's with her. Love it!
I did get a bit confused at DK reaction after our HY told him she throws herself to any man. I watched that scene over and over again and I saw a subtle smirk after he heard the recording which kind of showed he liked the *confession*. But then after HY explanation (throwing herself to any man), I could tell he didn't like the answer. Not sure if it was because of disappointment (him being compared to any man) or because he truly worries about her acting the way she does when getting drunk.
Anyway, looking forward to next week's episodes. Want HTJ to come out of jail soon so the storm hits, passes away and the sun comes out for our lovely couple.

Hi, MQW!

I think DK really cares for OHY's well-being. Staggering around drunk is no way to go through life. It's a great way to get yourself killed, and wolves are always on the prowl.

When he told her to wake up and take better care of herself by ceasing to throw herself at me, he included himself -- because he feels guilty for destroying her finance. At least that's what I think his motivation is.

I jumped into this drama with zero expectations, not even knowing who Eric was before this (sorry Shinhwa fans hahaha) but I'm so in love with this drama and PDK right now! It might be too early to say this but this is definitely a solid romcom so far with a heroine that we are all able to relate and empathise with. Does anyone have any solid romcom recommendations? Because I would definitely need a fix in between waiting for new episodes of OHYA!

Hope that the story would be able to keep its interesting edge even when shit hits the fan when the truth about how DK unintentionally sabotaged her perfect relationship with HTJ.

I might be freaking cold hearted coz I'm still not warming up to the other Haeyoung. I did feel quite bad for her but in the end, it's her choice. Whatever her reason is, she still left Dokyung and caused him immense pain. It annoys me so much how she's back now expecting to just pick Dokyung back up after throwing him away. I just don't like k-drama people who leave and come back expecting the other person to welcome them in an embrace. How self-centered.

I think Do-kyung is in a really tricky position here.

He may have landed Han Tae-jin in jail through his actions, but to then go to his former fiance and tell her everything when Tae-jin really doesn't want her to know he's in jail would also be pretty unfair (though I'm sure TJ would prefer that to her falling for DK).

I think this is why Do-kyung is trying so hard not to get emotionally involved with Hae-young. You can't get involved with someone you're keeping such a huge secret from. If he didn't have any personal relationship with her at all, he probably would have waited to make his amends through Tae-jin. The problem is that he keeps getting drawn closer to her and, the closer he gets, the more his secret becomes a direct betrayal to the relationship they're cultivating.

Great insight and I mostly agree. Only thing is, I wish he pushed her to look into Tae Jin's real reason for dumping her. Otherwise, I agree that it wasn't his place to tell her. Especially because in his head he plans to fix things, and "hoped" they (Tae Jin and OUR Oh Hae Young) would get back together.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), like he said, while trying to fix things, he's unexpectedly falling for her.

I am loving this show. It's the perfect mix of rom- com and realism. Obviously, as this is a drama, the fantasy element does take precedence, but don't we all love it!

I know this might be too far- fetched, but what if the evidence that Do- Kyung's mother claims would make the other Oh Hae Young believe that he doesn't really love her- actually relates to our Oh Hae Young? And what if the show shows that the other OHY was as jealous of our OHY as our OHY was of her (I know, the name confusion is irritating even in comments- blame the show for it :P)

But then, SK&DK lost their father and mom also somehow changed her personality. She has so much desire for money because she is so determined to shoot a good movie ... She want $ not for lavish expenditure but making movies! This made me wonder if this is related to the unaccomplished dream of her first husband...
