Bodyguard Lee Jung-jae to protect Prince Yeo Jin-gu in Enemy Soldier
by tineybeanie
It seems that Yeo Jin-gu (Jackpot) will go from playing one Joseon prince to another. He has just been confirmed as Crown Prince Gwanghae for upcoming historical film Enemy Soldier. This movie is about the political struggles and impressive battles that lead to Prince Gwanghae’s rise to power during the Seven Year War as told from the perspective of a royal bodyguard played by Lee Jung-jae (Assassination).
The plot takes place just after Prince Gwanghae’s father cowardly flees for his life after a Japanese invasion of the Korean Peninsula. Gwanghae’s older brother Imhae is a well-known incompetent profligate, so Gwanghae is installed as de facto ruler of the nation. He must devise strategies to fight the Japanese forces and maintain his diplomatic relations with the powerful Ming Empire all while dodging assassination attempts from an internal opposing political party that wants to install his younger brother onto the throne. Lee Jung-jae’s character guards and watches the young ruler as he matures into his reign. Actor Kim Mu-yeol (My Beautiful Bride) is also considering a role in this movie as soldier Gok-soo.
To say Prince Gwanghae is a pretty popular figure in Korean films and dramas is an understatement. He has been played by multiple talented actors like Cha Seung-won (Hwajeong), Seo In-gook (King’s Face), Lee Sang-yoon (Goddess of Fire Jung-yi), and Lee Byung-heon (Masquerade). There’s been a recent fascination with reimagining Gwanghae as a film and drama hero. Despite being a masterful politician and effective ruler, his claim to the throne was always challenged by his birth status as a concubine’s son. Many of his efforts were not appreciated in his lifetime, and because he was deposed by his political rivals, he was stripped of his title as king, which was never restored.
In his current drama Jackpot, Yeo Jin-gu plays Prince Yeoning (future King Yeongjo) who fights against the political corruption in his father’s court. Although in the same position as Crown Prince, Yeoning and Gwanghae carved very different paths to power. Yeo has promised that he would show a clear distinction between his characters through his acting.
Enemy Soldier plans to start filming during the latter half of this year after casting and pre-production details are finalized.

Thank God Yeo Jin-Goo is cast with Lee Jung-Jae. The biggest miss-justice to him was to have him as second lead to JGS in that Gambler drama. Yeo Jin-Goo is so good, and JGS does not hold a candle to him, but yet he is the lead?

I'm probably the only one who prefer Jackpot to all the other sageuks that are currently on. I love the fresh take on King Sukjong and his sons. I finally found my King of kings in Choi Min Soo. He is brilliant and intimidating. The real tiger of the show!
I think Yeo Jin Goo is perfect as Prince Yeoning. I don't see him as Dae Gil and it's great to see what it would have been like to have his older brother around. JGS is doing fine playing his big brother and the centre of attention. This is afterall his story.

How is that drama? I used to be a big time Sageuk fan. But I have jumped ship to Chinese historicals instead. After way too many bad Korean ones (Exception - The Six Dragons, which was stellar throughout, minus Shin Se Kyung's character, but that's a story for another day).
There have been way too many misses, such as the awfulness that was Jang Hyuk's Shine or Go Crazy, which took a promising premise and beat it to the ground, with nonsense and miscasting.

Sorry to disappoint you but Jang Geun Suk is doing extremely well in his role and koreans are praising him more than anyone.
What is with this website targetting on certain actors as if they deserve to be exiled or something

JGS's acting is on par with him. So I don't find any problem with it. As long as not some flower boys who cannot act, being a lead over him, I am okay. My only problem is the girl who both of them love..

Jang Geun Suk and Yeo Jin Goo are fine.. no problem!
The actresses are the problem, the main female lead is so stoic while the Queen (their mother) is over the top IMO.

Lady Choi (their mother) was never queen. Inwon should be the current queen but she is not part of the drama.

Yeo Jin-gu and Lee Hyun-woo are two of my favourite younger actors. They don't seem to have luck with their dramas but their movies are mostly successful. I hope this movie turns out great but I hope Yeo Jin-gu will not get typecast into saguek roles alone.

Not really with the case of YJG. His last 2 movies are kinda flop although his co-star with much older and esteemed veteran actors.
Hope this movie will turn the table. He can acting in saguek genre as long as it is interesting and he can acting even in his sleep.

I'm loving all these Chungmuro casting news. Thank you!
Yeo Jin Goo is the future of Chungmuro. He is equally fantastic in sageuks and modern dramas/movies. This sounds like a much heavier role on the big screen and he surely can handle it.
I'm excited to see Kim Mu-yeol return to the big screen! I hope he is playing the enemy soldier. He'd make a great kickass villain with lots of fight scenes and he can surely wield a sword.

It's been a while before I've seen Yeo Jingu acting (I haven't been watching dramas much nowadays). Wow, haven't we came a long way with this little boy? I can remember the times he was just a little moppet! He's grown pretty well.

YJG to play as Gwanghae? Awesome.
Cha Seung Won as King Gwanghae was the best thing in Hwajung. He just ate alive Lee Yeon Hee & Seo Kang Joon in that drama. when he dethroned, I also left the drama.

Usually Gwanghae is played by charismatic actor, Lee Byung Hun, Cha Seung Won and even Seo In Guk. Now I'm excited to see Yeo Jin Goo as Gwanghaegun.
The only Gwanghae I dislike is Lee Sang Yoon, but that's more because his character was so bland and the plot was super ultra boring in Goddess of Fire.

No because he does it well. Not everyone can do sageuk. His age also gives writers opportunity to explore the king's early years like Prince Yeoning in Jackpot. That's the first time Yeoning is shown from his late teen before he ascended the throne.

You may have not been closely following his career but he has done plenty of roles that are not in the sageuk genre post The Moon Embraces the Sun
- a high school student in "I Miss You"
- a teenage boy raised by 5 criminals in "Hwayi"
- a really chill, 24 year old app program developer in "Potato Star" (he was just 16 when he started in this role)
- a timid mental patient in "Shoot Me in the Heart"
- a North Korean soldier in "The Long Way Home"
I won't even include his role in Orange Marmalade cos he briefly played a Joseon role there.
He keeps on trying out huge variety of roles and his acting just keeps on improving. But it's also undeniable that he's one of the few actors who can give great justice to their sageuk roles. His face and voice just absolutely fits that of a royalty.
